Best Toy Hauler RVs for Off-Road Adventure

off road travel trailer toy hauler

Toy haulers , also called sport utility recreational vehicles (SURVs), are towable RV campers with garage space for “toys.” There’s usually a ramp that comes off the garage, so it’s easier to load and unload your toys.

Toys can be things like:

  • Hoverboards
  • Motorcycles
  • Paddleboards
  • Mountain or road bikes
  • Snowmobiles

In addition to the garage, a toy hauler has a living space that has typical RV features: a kitchen, toilet, dining area, and sleeping quarters.

A toy hauler allows you to pack some extra fun along with everything else. But what other features do they have? And how do you choose the best ones for off-roading? Read on for answers to these questions.

Choosing the Best Toy Hauler for Your Adventures

Here’s what you should consider when shopping for an off-road toy hauler camper trailer.

Garage Space

garage-space-best-toy-hauler-rvs-for-outdoor-adventure-07-2023

The defining feature of a toy hauler is that it has garage space.

When looking at toy haulers , the best thing to do is measure the garage space. Will it fit everything you’d like to travel with? Are there enough tie-downs for you to load your toys safely ?

Most models we recommend have a garage space of 11-15 feet. Depending on the model, the garage can share some space with the dining and kitchen areas. Some models fix this by cleverly putting the bathroom between the garage and living room areas.

Towing Capacity

towing-capacity-best-toy-hauler-rvs-for-outdoor-adventure-07-2023

For toy haulers, towing capacity is probably one of the most important factors to consider. The models we recommend typically have dry weight (meaning the RV is empty) of 6,000-14,000 lbs.

Adding in your luggage and toys will make the toy hauler even heavier. So, be sure your car can tow the model you choose. This is especially true if you’re planning to go off-road.

Use our Towing Guide to check your vehicle’s towing capacity.

Living Area

living-area-best-toy-hauler-rvs-for-outdoor-adventure-07-2023

The living area, like all features, depends on the model. Some toy haulers can sleep as few as four people, while others can sleep a whopping 11.

All models have seating and a master bed for a comfy night on the road. All models will either have a space to hook up a TV or already come with a TV.

Off-Roading

off-roading-best-toy-hauler-rvs-for-outdoor-adventure-07-2023

Going off-road can be risky. Not all RVs on the market are the best off-road toy haulers. Make sure to confirm whether off-roading is possible and recommended for the model you choose.

All the models discussed below can be taken off-road, but keep this thought in mind if you’re shopping elsewhere.

OPUS 15

Interior equipment includes a Truma Combi Eco furnace (hot-water system), Dometic 13,500-BTU roof-top air conditioner, TV with indoor and outdoor mounts, stereo system with four speakers, and numerous 110V and USB ports.

Off-grid adventure in the OPUS Camper OP15 is made easily accessible with standards such as three 100A AGM batteries, a 300W solar panel setup, and utility storage for two 6-gallon fuel cans as standard. You can boost that capability with options such as a DC charger, or lithium batteries and an upgraded charger.

At first glance, the Palomino Pause 20.3 may not look like a camping trailer that can handle rugged duty. But don’t judge the Pause 20.3 by its cover. Underneath the skin there lies a sturdy structure supported by a lightweight but strong aluminum huck-bolted frame and off-road suspension from MorRyde.

The MorRyde independent air ride suspension system comes with Bilstein off-road shocks, delivering 25 inches of ground clearance and a comfortable and secure ride over any road surface. An articulating hitch is standard equipment.

Tribe Trailers Expedition 500

One of the things that makes the Tribe Expedition 500 camping trailer a natural choice for off-grid exploration is the ease of towing created by the design of the trailer’s lightweight all-aluminum collapsible body. The Expedition 500 is designed like a box within a box.

The top box can be lowered onto the lower box to go from a tall and roomy 9 feet, 6 inches high (measured from the ground) in full campsite setup to a low-profile, easy-to-tow 6 feet, 11 inches. Add the beefy independent A-arm suspension system with dual air shocks and coil springs, and you have a rugged camping trailer with serious off-road travel abilities.

Rugged Camper Trailer Buying Guide Need to Know

What makes a camping trailer rugged.

If you’re wondering what to look for when searching for the rugged off-road capable camping trailer best suited for your brand of outdoor adventure, we have some recommendations.

Sturdy Construction

Much of the recreational vehicle industry builds camping and trailer bodies using a method referred to as “stick and tin.” This construction is similar to the wood framing of a home covered by aluminum. It’s fine for general use, but not the best choice for extreme terrain or weather conditions.

The better choices are those trailers with metal (usually aluminum) skeletons draped with modern composite sheeting. They can offer weight savings and better structural integrity.

Upgraded Suspension

Axle-less suspension systems like those made by Timbren are a first step up from the average trailer with beam axles beneath its coach. For the next step up, made to handle rough or dirt roads and remain smooth on the highway, independent suspension air-ride systems such as MORRryde produce are your entry ticket into the rugged trailer category.

Articulating Hitch

When browsing for a rugged camping trailer, you will often see the term “articulating hitch.” It’s a key piece of equipment. If it’s standard, great. If it’s an option, get it. An articulating hitch provides a revolving joint between the tow vehicle and the trailer that helps the trailer and its suspension system more easily navigate rough terrain.

Need-to-Know Trailer Talk

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum safe permissible weight for a trailer, including all cargo, fluids, LPG, and optional equipment.

Base, Dry, Tare, Unladen: You may see it expressed differently depending upon the manufacturer, but they mean the same thing — the total weight of a base-model trailer in standard equipment trim, with no cargo, fluids (freshwater), or LPG.

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC): Sometimes referred to as Rated Cargo Load, is the maximum amount of cargo weight the trailer can safely hold. This includes everything you load (all gear food, bikes, etc.) into the trailer, full water tanks, filled propane tanks, and batteries.

Tongue or Hitch Weight: The manufacturer’s published tongue weights are established using base-model trailer weights. It should be between 10% and 15% of your trailer’s weight when fully loaded. More than 500 pounds of tongue weight can place stress on the rear suspension and adversely affect the steering and overall handling of anything less than a ¾ -ton or larger pickup truck.

A weight-distributing hitch can mitigate these problems by leveraging some weight off the hitch and back onto the axles. An easy way to accurately measure your trailer’s tongue weight is to use a drive-on public scale. See this Blue Ox guide to measuring tongue weight.

Who doesn’t want to go off roading with their friends and enjoy the serenity of natural landscapes? Off roading and overlanding are adventures loved by many, and it’s safe to say that it’s becoming a national hobby.

Most of the time, people love to take their off road toy haulers or trailers along as well. It makes the stay easier, and some of them are capable enough to carry even ATVs, motorcycles, and other toys as well.

While going off-grid, the off road toy hauler you’re towing must be as robust as the truck you’re towing it with, and it ought to withstand the ruggedness of unforgiving terrains. Additionally, it must be capable of housing your luggage and any toys you want to take with you.

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer outside 2

While most trailers are fine in on-road situations, an all-out ultimate off road toy hauler was missing from the scene, until now!

RKS Off-Road recently launched their all-new Motive toy hauler with some incredible specs and features.

It’s a newly designed trailer developed in-house by RKS with just one Motive in mind – offering an ultimate toy hauler with limitless possibilities. After having a look at it and understanding its capabilities, I can safely say that it is the best off road toy hauler you can get right now. Let me explain why.

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer outside 1

RKS Off-Road’s latest offering, the Motive M19HD, is the epitome of off roading . It can be regarded as the perfect off road toy hauler. All credits go to smart engineering, luxurious and practical features, and astonishing capabilities.

The Motive M19HD has everything that it takes to become the leader in off-road trailers. It also brings a new standard to off roading with great features.

Off-road trails are no joke, and with heavy load carriage, the stress on an off road trailer increases.

Apart from carrying luggage and vehicles, a trailer has to be robust enough to withstand unforgiving terrain without falling apart. The Motive M19HD ticks all the boxes on the quality and robustness checklist, thanks to its commitment to using premium raw materials in production.

Get a first-hand look at this bad boy in the video above!

Frame and Exterior

The Motive trailer is an off road toy hauler built using high-strength aluminum with a touch of carbon to provide excellent sturdiness and stiffness to the frame. While out on the trails, this frame helps withstand the bumps and vibrations while keeping the interior panels and all the components intact. It’s also lightweight, so it’s easier to tow and helps manage weight distribution.

Durable Interior

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer inside

Apart from being well-appointed, the interior is also made up of highly durable material that can withstand tough environments. The interior panels and components are made of composite materials and aluminum for durability and ease of cleaning.

All the hardware and frames are also made of stainless steel. This ensures the trailer can survive off-roading adventures and all the smashing around. Unlike wood, these materials are waterproof as well, so you don’t have to worry about a damp environment or water splashing in.

The Motive M19HD is an off road toy hauler with immense capabilities, thanks to its manufacturing and top-quality parts. The trailer has to keep up with the truck while bearing the load, so it has to be rugged as well as smart.

Mechanicals

Supporting the frame and wheels are Tandem heavy-duty axles which can withstand the terrain without failure. The 20” rugged wheels with 34” all-terrain tires add to the capability of the trailer. The lightweight frame is ideal as it puts less stress on the axles.

Payload Capacity

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer Specs

The Motive is capable of carrying up to 3,400 lbs of payload without breaking a sweat. This is enough to carry gear for 4-5 people along with an ATV or two bikes.

Lightweight

At under 5,000 lbs, the RKS Off-Road Motive is one of the lightest off road toy haulers you can get right now. This makes it easier to tow, even with a compact or half-ton truck.

Your off road adventures require that your trailer has ample space. Fortunately, the Motive toy hauler fares very well in this department. There’s tons of space that can be customized as desired and allows storage of multiple items.

For example, D-rings and floor rails help you secure the payload and prevent shifting. T-slots at different spots also let you adjust how and where items are secured.

Additionally, the roof deck allows for storage of certain items. Let’s not forget about the Aerobox to keep your important gear up front!

You might not be able to find a power source nearby, and carrying generators or solar panels might not be an option. The Motive off road toy hauler takes care of your power needs thanks to a premium lithium-ion battery set up with a 2,400-watt inverter.

Also, an available 800-watt solar panel keeps you up and connected. All the lights, LEDs, speakers, and screens can be powered independently by this system.

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer inside

RKS didn’t forget about your meals when you’re overlanding, so they added a kitchen with a Greystone cooktop, a separate stainless steel sink, and a 96L DZ cooler. With this kitchen, you’ll always be eating fresh out there in your off road toy hauler!

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer inside 4

The Motive is capable of housing 4-5 people, and there’s space for 1 queen and 1 California king bed to help you sleep in peace. If that’s still not enough, the unique SkyDeck also lets you sleep after stargazing all night.

Complete Washroom

RKS Off-Road Motive Trailer inside

RKS thought of everything while designing the Motive toy hauler and they put a complete washroom with a height-adjustable shower and porcelain macerator toilet, so you don’t have to look for a spot in the woods to take care of business.

SkyDeck – Your Premium Rooftop

The unique SkyDeck is a first-in-class option where you can climb onto the roof and enjoy the serenity, have a cold drink, or enjoy stargazing at night.

All of these rugged and luxury features make the RKS Motive M19HD one of the best off road toy haulers in the market. If you ask me, it should be at the top of your overlanding wish list if it isn’t already!

XploreRV XR 22 Extreme Offroad Travel Trailer (& Toy Hauler)

off road travel trailer toy hauler

The XploreRV XR 22 Extreme Offroad Travel Trailer (& Toy Hauler) has its roots in designed by Imperial Outdoors a subsidiary of Nelson Industries who have been manufacturing 'Fish Houses' for over 10 years. Its in the overall construction that this camper shines and the industry could perhaps learn something from this manufacturer. This 'Off-Road Camper' is constructed around a reinforced coated steel frame. Thick fully insulated high density foam and hung fibre glass walls with a thermal insulation rating (R) of 13 stand on an insulated floor with an R value of 11. Overhead the 'A' frame fully insulated 'walk on' aluminium roof is 6.5" thick with an R value of 24! Everything is designed above the frame leaving the 'under carriage' obstruction free. There are no heat 'transits' that breech this outer thermal shell.

This is clearly a very professional build, well finished and presented. It appears there is a team here striving for excellence; the trailer is well constructed and they do not appear to have taken any sloppy short cuts. The trailer frankly is a 'bit of a box' but a pointed nose must help the aerodynamics. A fully articulated tow hitch connects the trailer to the towing vehicle.

When being towed on the black top or stationary for loading, the trailer's tandem axles have a ground clearance of about 12 inches. For towing off road this can be raised to 20 inches in just 20 seconds. An onboard air compressor is available for adjusting tyre pressures to improve handling off-road. An electric 18 foot awning can be deployed nearly the full length of the trailer over high quality polycarbonate double windows that keep the weather out. LED lights run around the top so the campsite can be lit with all round lighting.

off road travel trailer toy hauler

A rear camera and working lights stand above the full size rear ramp (door) that can be fully lowered to allow 'toys' to be driven inside. This trailer should accommodate most ATV's / UTV's or several bikes. Two full size spare tyres on wheels are mounted on swing away arms on the rear door. Recovery rings below are another indication of off its road capability. Once the trailer is parked at a campsite, if the full functionality of the camper is to be used then the 'Toys' will really need to be removed from the trailer. Perhaps a canvas garage attached to the trailer could be designed for security purposes and to keep toys out of the weather.

The top of the trailer is robust and weight bearing. There is plenty of room for the 2 (or more) x 100W solar panels and a fully insulated Roof top tent.

The water, grey and black water tanks and all the associated pipework lies above the floor in heated areas of the trailer to prevent freezing. In addition hot pads are fitted to the tanks for use in very cold weather.

Tie down rings are fitted on deck (floor) to secure carried loads. At the back by the rear door sits a folding dinette with a drop down bed double overhead. The bench seating down each side does not appear to be very cozy. A U-shaped seat would provide a better space for working and lounging about. Of course this is not really how most users would probably want to utilise the trailer but it should be possible providing it could be removed to facilitate loading and unloading. Maybe it would open the trailer up to other markets and buyer segments too?

Overhead a tung and groove cedar ceiling and LED lighting is standard.

Galley (Kitchen)

The cabinetry is solid wood. All the furniture is soft close with robust yachting type locking latches to keep gear secure and minimise breakages on the tracks and trails. It includes a 3 burner cooktop and oven with a vent air extractor overhead fitted with a light. A sink with mixer tap and a large 11cuft, 12V Fridge / Freezer with shelves deep enough to hold a 12 pack of coke length ways. Air Conditioning is available. This trailer is fully insulated for extreme cold weather in Wisconsin.

Lounge / Office

The bench seats and collapsable table are very functional for use as originally designed. For an extended expedition such as Tip Toe, it would be nice to have an option for a more luxurious, cozy feel. Somewhere you can stretch out and snuggle up on rest days or in the evenings.

off road travel trailer toy hauler

Sleeping. Arrangements are functional. There is a double lift lift bed in the rear above the table and bench seats - U shaped seating below? Depending on the load (Toys carried) it might be necessary to unload to provide sufficient space to drop the bed.

There appears to be space on the deck in front to lay mattresses to sleep a couple more and a high quality roof top insulated tent with a 4" thick mattress overhead.

Water. The trailer has a 36 gallon (~163L) fresh water tank and a 36 gallon grey water tank with its drain above the frame. This potentially gives it roughly a 5 day endurance with two people being careful. An additional tank could be added if necessary. Additional water could also be carried in Jerry Cans in holders at the rear. 12V tank heating pads and tank air warming is provided to avoid freezing tanks and pipes in extreme cold. Hot water is supplied on demand. The system is driven by a Surflow pump.

Shower / Toilet. There is a separate area for the shower and sink. The shower has a functional Maxair reverse air flow covered vent overhead that can be thermostat controlled and even opened when its raining. There is no black water tank in this trailer and therefore nothing to freeze here either. Space allocated for the dry flush toilet appears a little tight. On 'flushing', waste is sucked into a waste bag. The bags support two people for over five days with normal use and thereafter they have to be changed. The used bag can be disposed of in the trash. The replacement process is simple and takes just a fews seconds

Gas. 2 x 20LB (approximately 17.8L) LPG tanks.

Power. The trailer boasts a 40 Ah Lithium Battery bank. 9 x USB Ports and 6 power outlets are spread throughout the inside of the trailer. Its anticipated that the batteries will be able to be charged by 110V shore power where available or a generator and of course solar panels above and / or solar mats. 12V fridge / freezer and TV are available. Air conditioning keeps the trailer cool on hot days.

TV. A 12V TV on a swing arm that locks during travel is available.

Storage. The design and function means there is lots of storage space in this trailer. Cargo nets could even be used to tie gear down to the deck if required.

A penalty of the high quality construction appears to be weight. At 6400lbs (2902kgs) dry weight this is a heavy trailer. A Honda UTV weighs 574kgs. For towing with a 4WD (maximum towing capacity of 3500kgs) this leaves a payload of just 24kgs, not much more than enough for your toothbrush and a change of underwear! Its size though that is the major factor for shipping. At 23'4" long and 120" high, it would probably require RoRo shipping.

Take a look at the product review video below; its a great endorsement by ROA ( RV's of America ) who it must be said are a Distributor (and for the avoidance of doubt, are not paying me to write this!) but do of course do have a vested interest here. Touring the Americas is another bucket list trip. (If you buy a camper from ROA you automatically join their 'Roamer' program and qualify for lifetime technical support from their team.)

The construction and thermal protection qualities of the XploreRV XR 22 Extreme Offroad Travel Trailer (& Toy Hauler) are outstanding and should be seriously considered by other manufacturers. A reduction in weight without compromising thermal qualities is clearly the challenge. The comprehensive Owners Manual, with check lists, maintenance, technical details, loading, electrical systems etc, is also commendable and an important point of reference to assist self repair. It is not the prettiest shape but it is certainly functional and the ability to carry (say) a UTV for local running is attractive; but one of the advantages of towing is of course that the vehicle can be detached to allow local exploration. Being practical, its a heavy trailer and will require a large 'tractor' to tow it. Despite its good off road clearance, its arrival and departure angles do not appear to be as good as some other trailers and its use would probably constrain route choice especially in Africa. The overall length may cause some problems on some of the smaller ferries. Not that its a measurement, but this trailer is not going up Baboons Pass in South Africa whereas the Patriot and Opus Camper Trailers might!!

Right now its unlikely that the 12 month warranty terms could be supported in say Northern Europe or Africa. The company is not currently set up for export so it would need to purchased and shipped. Whilst it does not appear to be suitable for Tip Toe, if you are looking for a well built trailer for cold weather operations then you should take a good look at the XploreRV R22 Off Road Trailer (& Toy Hauler).

Notes to readers :

1. The above trailer has not been physically towed or sighted by Tip Toe. The above summary is a view formed following desktop online research of websites and a number of different YouTube videos. Comments offered above are offered in the context of Tip Toe's overland requirements. It will be used to assist in the choice of vehicle and camper.

2. For the purposes of these articles, differentiation between the different categories of trailer as follows:

Camper Trailer: A trailer fitted with an integrated 'trailer top tent' (with or without a hard shell), galley, water, power and associated items and storage for most or all of your clothing and equipment. For example Patriot Campers X3 .

Off-Road Camper: A purpose built caravan style trailer with hard walls possibly with a soft walled 'pop up', galley, water, power and associated camping items and storage for most clothing and equipment. The ' Bruder EXP-6 Expedition Trailer ' falls into this category.

Off-Road Camper & Toy Hauler. A trailer equipped with sleeping and living facilities but capable of carrying 'Toys' such as ATV / UTV, Motorbikes, Boats etc. For example the XploreRV XR 22 Extreme Offroad Travel Trailer (& Toy Hauler ).

Expedition Truck: A truck of 7500 kgs or greater fitted with a camper box with or without crawl through. For example the Mercedes Unimog Camper.

10 Best Travel Trailer Toy Haulers

Small Toy Hauler Travel Trailers

Sharing is caring!

The travel trailer toy haulers we have in store for you today are fantastic toys themselves. Since everyone wants to get the most out of their RVs, why not go with a toy that hauls toys?

These things are awesome, designed from the ground up with beefy frameworks, space for families, plenty of room for your favorite ATV, dirt bike, or kayak, and a ton of neat, technological features tweaked for outdoor adventures.

From Black Series to Grand Design’s new MAV travel trailers, this is a lineup for pure, unadulterated fun. If you’re looking for a solid travel trailer and you love the great outdoors, this is your dream list, with the best travel trailer toy haulers on the market. Enjoy!

What is a Travel Trailer Toy Hauler?

A travel trailer toy hauler is just what it sounds like, a towable RV that features a garage-type design for holding ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, kayaks, and just about any large, outdoor adventure vehicle you can imagine (depending on the size of the garage space, of course).

The fact that they carry around our favorite toys is not the only thing that separates travel trailer toy haulers from traditional travel trailers. They’re typically built with more durable frameworks, premium shocks, premium axles, and an eye toward off-grid lifestyles.

As a result of the additional weight they are capable of hauling, cargo-carrying capacities are much heavier than traditional travel trailers as well. A good travel trailer toy hauler features a design focused on adjusting the interior for space and toy accommodations.

It’s way different than your traditional travel trailer, from the roof to the tires. With that being said, let’s check out what’s on offer.

Once you see what these travel trailers have to offer, don’t blame us for making you green with envy. Sure, a standard travel trailer will definitely take you places and you can do a lot to turn one into an outdoor machine.

However, these are built from scratch with outdoor living in mind and it shows in even the tiniest of design features.

1. Black Series TH19

Black Series TH19 travel trailer toy hauler- Exterior

Our Pros and Cons

✅ 360° exterior camera system

⛔ The Black Series is a bit hard to get with limited availability

  • Length: 22′ 3″
  • UVW: 6,172 lbs
  • GVWR: 9,000 lbs
  • CCC: 2,828 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 900 lbs

What better travel trailer toy hauler to start with than the Black Series? These are popular, relatively new, and hard to get your hands on. Unfortunately, supply has yet to meet demand.

The Black Series TH19 is smallish yet loaded. The wet bath might not be everyone’s style but it’s nice, convenient, and spacious, with an outdoor shower available as well. Capable of sleeping 6, there’s more than enough space and style to accommodate a mid-size family.

One of the best aspects of the TH19 is the 360° camera system. It’s not designed for parking. You can lie in bed and check out everything around the camper before you head outside. If you’ve ever spent a lot of time well off the grid, you’ll know how significant this feature is.

With a roughly 10′ x 7′ garage space, you can haul anything from a mid-range ATV to a number of dirtbikes. Once the toys are outside, the dual-opposing sofas convert into bunk beds for 4.

2. ATC 2419

ATC 2419 travel trailer toy hauler- Exterior

✅ Rock-solid, all-aluminum frame

⛔ The factory converter-to-battery cable is often too small for charging needs in bulk mode

  • Length: 30′
  • UVW: 5,900 lbs
  • GVWR: 11,440 lbs lbs
  • CCC: 5,540 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 700

There are some who don’t dig the all-aluminum RVs out there, however, in this case, it’s a boon. The all-aluminum frame is rigid, sturdy, and won’t suffer from the elements in the way a wood frame will. Remember, the ATC is designed to get out there and be a workhorse in the wilderness.

With a massive CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity) and 11′ x nearly 8′ garage space, you can park a large-class ATV or UTV in here with room to spare. Another plus on the ATC 2419 is the cabinetry. A lot of RVers complain about toy hauler cabinetry—the cabinets lose their ability to stay closed during travel. That’s not the case here.

The ATC is very stable within, built for years on the road while remaining functional and safe within. It also features three-season plumbing, a Progressive Dynamics 9560 converter, an ‘intelligent system’, 600W of solar paneling on the roof, and 13.5v water line heating pads. It’s ready for the wilderness whenever you are.

3. Heartland Torque T285

Heartland Torque T285 travel trailer toy hauler - Exterior

✅ Tie-downs are welded directly onto the frame for exceptional holding strength

⛔ No solar or converter comes with the Heartland Torque T285

  • Length: 35.9′
  • UVW: 8,360 lbs
  • GVWR: 12,800 lbs
  • CCC: 4,392 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,240 lbs

Of the 10 travel trailer toy haulers on our list, the Heartland Torque T285 is the quintessential party house as much as it is a toy hauler. With the power queen out of the way, the ramp drops down into a party deck with a railing. With a garage space that’s 16′ deep, the additional party deck combines into an enormous, open space.

This monster can sleep 8 and host even more for a massive grill out or a serious ATV event. In fact, this is so spacious that even if you don’t have a toy to haul around, it’s still an attractive option for those with large families or who appreciate a large guest list.

If you do have a large ATV or UTV, don’t worry. You can very nearly park a car in this rig. The 4,392-lb CCC opens the door for a variety of large ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles, etc. If you own it, odds are good the Heartland Torque T285 will haul it.

4. Forest River Work and Play 29SS

Forest River Work and Play 29SS travel trailer toy hauler- Exterior

✅ The zero-gravity ramp door is awesome

⛔ The dometic thermostat isn’t the most renowned thermostat in the world

  • Length: 32′ 11″
  • UVW: 6,790 lbs
  • GVWR: 10,500 lbs
  • CCC: 3,710 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,312 lbs

What an interesting name among the large list of travel trailer toy haulers. The Forest River Work and Play is just that—a workhorse and a toy. Want to take it hunting? Perfect. Want to go on an off-road adventure with the kids? Perfect.

The 29SS is a larger model in Forest River’s lightweight toy hauler lineup but it can hold its own in most scenarios. The spacious, interior design features a dual-entry bathroom, flip-up sofas, plenty of counter space, and massive garage space that’s nearly 16′ deep.

There’s enough width to park a large ATV and the zero-gravity ramp door transforms into a party deck in case you decide to grill out after a day on the trails and in the woods.

When you’re done picking the ticks off, you can hit up the spacious bathroom with a large, stand-up shower and skylight. Its large master bedroom features a king-size bed with plenty of walk-around space. In fact, the entirety of the 29SS feels spacious. Feel free to stretch out after a day on the road!

5. Coachmen Adrenaline 23LT

Coachmen Adrenaline 23LT travel trailer toy hauler - Exterior

✅ Heavy-duty Dexter axle with Nev-R-Adjust brake system

⛔ King bedside and foot space are nowhere near as wide as they look on the floorplan

  • Length: 29.6′
  • UVW: 5,752′
  • GVWR: 9,600 lbs
  • CCC: 3,788 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 948 lbs

The Coachmen Adrenaline 23LT is another fine and spacious addition to our list of best travel trailer toy haulers. The garage space is a shade over 13′ deep and there is plenty of width with the roll-over sofas and the power Queen.

The dual-entry bathroom is spacious and you won’t have any problems cleaning up after a day outside. The ‘Alumicage’ construction is rock solid and the 23LT also includes a beefed-up, Dexter axle, and Nev-R-Adjust brakes.

It’s clearly designed to take it off the beaten path and while it couldn’t hold its own against the Black Series, it’s capable of far more than just highway travel. For those that like to pack big, you’ll appreciate the pass-through storage as well.

6. Forest River No Boundaries 19.1

Forest River No Boundaries 19.1 travel trailer toy hauler- Exterior

✅ Loaded for outdoor adventures including a J-cradle kayak rack

⛔ The floors are a little bouncy

  • Length: 24′ 11″
  • UVW: 4,941 lbs
  • GVWR: 7,896 lbs
  • CCC: 2,955 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 896 lbs

The term ‘no boundaries’ insinuates quite a lot, especially in the mind of someone with adventure flowing through their veins. You can bring a lot with you as well, as the Forest River No Boundaries 19.1 is heavily focused on storage capacity and compartments.

While it only sleeps four, it feels even more spacious, with 6’6″ of headspace, a 10.5-foot deep garage, and 5.4 feet between the wheel wells. There’s no fancy power bed in the rear on this one but you’ll hardly miss it.

The fold-up sofa works fine and is quick and easy to stow away and pull out when it’s needed. The bathroom feels a little tight but Forest River did a great job offering a full dry bath in an RV this size.

7. Heartland Fuel F-305

Heartland Fuel F-305 travel trialer toy hauler- Exterior

✅ Excellent entertainment space for guests and parties

⛔ The ramp doesn’t convert into a party deck unless you purchase the upgrade

  • UVW: 8,620 lbs
  • CCC: 4,132 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,380 lbs

The Heartland Fuel F-305 is another excellent travel trailer toy hauler from Heartland. If it makes it on our list twice or more, it means that the manufacturer is putting out some excellent products.

Like its Heartland Torque T285 counterpart, the garage depth on the Fuel is 16′, so you’ll have plenty of room to park a large ATV.

Theater seating, across from a large sofa and dinette, and plenty of counter space don’t detract from the overall roomy feel of the Fuel. Even the king bed can’t take up all the space in the master bedroom.

The bathroom is dual-entry, large, and accommodating and the back features a power queen that drops down over dual-opposing sofas (which also fold out to form a bunk bed).

With the ramp door forming a party deck, combined with the immense amount of room, you’re only limited by your imagination in terms of what you can do.

8. Jayco Jay Flight Octane 222

Jayco Jay Flight Octane 222 travel trailer toy hauler- Exterior

✅ Aluminum-lined exterior storage compartments are pretty beefy

⛔ The queen bed is a tight fit

  • Length: 26′ 6″
  • UVW: 5,785 lbs
  • GVWR: 8,250 lbs
  • CCC: 2,465 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 820 lbs

It wouldn’t be a list without Jayco and the Jayco Jay Flight Octane 222 is a prime example of what Jayco can do with limited space. The ramp is a 7′ party deck conversion and it features an interior table that shifts out onto the deck.

If you’re down for an outdoor meal on the patio, you can do that. If you need some shade, the 18′ power awning handles that nicely. There’s not much counter space and the Queen is a little tight fitting but it makes sense when you have a large garage space and a full, dry bath to cram in as well.

You can’t quite lie down in the large shower, but it’s a close thing. The fold-out queen bed/sofa in the back creates enough sleeping space for 4 and you have to love the 8′ 1″ worth of width in the garage space.

9. Coachmen Freedom Express 17BLSE

Coachmen Freedom Express 17BLSE travel trailer toy hauler - Exterior

✅ Easy-on, easy-off magnetic rear screen wall

⛔ A weird design decision to include a wooden stove cover over a three-burner gas stove

  • Length: 20′
  • UVW: 3,500lbs
  • GVWR: 5,900 lbs
  • CCC: 2,400 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 426 lbs

The tiny Coachmen Freedom Express 17BLSE is the little engine that could. It’s one of the smallest on our list of travel trailer toy haulers but it definitely belongs here. You can tell that Coachmen put in the work to create a small frame toy hauler that still manages to be roomy.

The 70″ roll-over sofa also features a free-standing table so you can convert an entire garage space into a dinette or sleeping quarters. It also features plenty of storage space, including pass-through storage access on the exterior.

It’s tiny enough that you get the feeling you’re experiencing life in general in a small forward section with a garage on the other side of the door. However, once the toy is out, the living space is far more accommodating and spacious.

10. Grand Design Momentum 27MAV

Grand Design Momentum 27MAV travel trailer toy hauler- Exterior

✅ Roof warranty increased from 12 to 18 years

⛔ Headrests in the bench seats turn into lumps when converted to a queen bed

  • Length: 32′ 3″
  • UVW: 6,835 lbs
  • GVWR: 10,995 lbs
  • CCC: 4,160 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 1,200 lbs

The Grand Design Momentum 27MAV is a brand-new model option from Grand Design and the chatter is quite loud on this one (in a positive way!). There’s plenty of sleeping space for a mid-size family.

Grand Design made sure to focus on the hallway, allowing for enough width so you never feel claustrophobic, despite the size of the bathroom and the shrinking of forward space to compensate for the garage area.

The bathroom is spacious with a large shower and skylight. There’s also an incredible amount of storage space, including a massive storage box hiding under the Queen bed. The L-counter runs back beside the fridge, accounting for less space while providing more surface area to work on.

How Much Does a Travel Trailer Toy Hauler Cost?

The cost for travel trailer toy haulers is a bit expansive, from smaller models priced in the $20,000 range to much larger, more luxurious models around $100,000. That’s an $80,000 disparity in between so the true answer is dependant on what you want in a toy hauler.

For instance, you will find the Coachmen Freedom Express 17BLSE priced between $24k and $28k in most places, while the Black Series TH19 is closer to $80k and the Heartland Torque T285 is somewhere in between.

What Size Vehicle Do You Need to Tow a Toy Hauler?

A healthy mix of half-tons and 3/4 tons will take care of your toy hauler towing needs. It just depends on the GCWVR. Half-tons will handle most of the sub-6,000-lb toy haulers out there. Plus, many of today’s half-tons are capable of hauling a lot more.

Today’s Ford F-150s are capable of towing up to 13,000 lbs when capably equipped and GMC, Dodge, and Chevy offer comparable models as well. Some of these travel trailer toy haulers can get heavy fast, however, especially if you throw a large ATV in there on top of everything else.

In those cases, a 3/4 or 1 ton is the better bet.

Can You Put a Car in a Toy Hauler?

Can You Put a Car in a Toy Hauler?

If the shoe fits… In reality, if you have the towing capability and you can fit the car in there, it’s possible, sure. These toy haulers are really designed for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, motorcycles, and things of that nature.

However, if we’re talking about a Mitsubishi Mirage, Hyundai Venue, Chevy Bolt, Smart ForTwo, or Ford Ka (Just to name a few examples), it’s certainly possible. Some of these toy haulers have a CCC of well over two tons and some of these cars weigh far less than a single ton.

If the width, depth, and weight are all well within the specs, do your thing. Just be very careful and make sure you know the exact weight of the car. Another thing worth noting is the weight capacity of the ramp. Just because a toy hauler has a 4,000+ CCC, doesn’t mean the ramp does as well.

Will My Toy Hauler Smell Like Gas?

Whether or not your toy hauler smells like gas depends on a few things. Number one, how old is the toy you’re parking in it? Does it have a few slow leaks? How clean and well-maintained is it? Did you just finish topping it off with gas? Maybe you spilled a little bit in the process.

If there is exposed gasoline, even a small drop, the vapors will fill up the room to one degree or another. Try and make sure that whatever you park in there is clean as a whistle. You may not want to sleep in the RV if you just pulled an ATV in there and it has a small oil leak.

Can You Rent a Travel Trailer Toy Hauler?

off road travel trailer toy hauler

You sure can. There are a growing number of RV rental agencies out there that would be happy to hand over a toy hauler for a weekend of fun. You’ll have the best luck going with a peer-to-peer option like Outdoorsy .

Peer-to-peer opens up a lot of avenues in terms of choice and you’ll have a broader selection range across the US, wherever you live.

Final Thoughts About Travel Trailer Toy Haulers

There you have it: ten of the best travel trailer toy haulers on the market today. If you’re looking for a rugged, off-grid, outdoor adventure, the Black Series TH19 is a beast. If you want something with a little more fun and swagger, the Heartland Torque T285 is a fantastic option.

The point is, that there is something on this list for everyone. There’s no reason to hook up to shore power in a quiet campground with these puppies—they’re built for adventure and lots of noise. Have lots of fun out there and always remember to stay safe!

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

Patriot Campers

The Ultimate Off Road Toy Hauler

PATRIOT CAMPERS TOY HAULER RANGE

The Toy Hauler range from Patriot Campers is the most customisable product available from the leaders in overlanding technology. Offering the toughest basecamp toy hauling solution for outdoor enthusiasts across the globe, with a Patriot Campers Toy Hauler you can get off road and bring all your toys along for the ride.

With three Toy Hauler variants, you can choose the right model to suit the toys you’ve got now, and the toys you’ll have later.

Each of our Toy Haulers earns their title from the deck capacity available. Choose between a massive 2.4 metre wide and 3.1m long deck with the TH610 , or opt for more space with the TH730 , which boasts a larger 2.3 metre wide and 4.15m long deck, and has been designed specifically for larger four-door side by sides, or multiple toys.

Also available is the TT730 , which replaces the base camp station up front with a smaller storage compartment, to provide even more room on the back to accommodate for larger off-road vehicles and even a full-size trophy truck.

TOY HAULER RANGE OPTIONS

The TH610 is 6.1 metres long in total; including the base camp section up front, which provides storage, water, power, kitchen facilities and more.  Not only will you haul your toys to remote, off road destinations, but you can camp there with them for longer.

The original inspiration for the TH610 was to have the ability to tow one side by side and a few additional toys for a boys trip, or a weekend getaway with the family.  Over time, the boat became a must-have, and so the boat loader was designed and provided as an option for the TH610 model only.

To load the boat, position the boat in place, hook up the 4000 pound winch and the boat will use the  easy roll nylon rollers load itself on top of the Toy Hauler in a matter of minutes. The largest tinny this Boat Loader will house is 3.9 metres long and 1.65 metres wide, with a maximum weight of 200kg. An optional Outboard motor holder is also available, and will hold any outboard up to 30 horsepower.

While the boat loader and platform have been designed for tinnies, the number of uses is unlimited and some opt to load their platform with kayaks, swags, or other items instead.

The TH730 follows the same design cues as the TH610, but with more space, totalling 7.3m long from the hitch to the end of the deck. If you’re looking for more space to accommodate a larger, four door side by side, or if you simply have more off road toys to haul, the TH730 is the winning choice.

Built for the racing enthusiast, the TT730 abandons the full base camp station at the front, in favour of a smaller storage compartment. This storage is ideal for racing gear, tie-down straps, recovery equipment, a portable fridge, or anything other gear may need on race day.

On either side of the storage compartment sits a space for jerry cans, and you’ll also notice the water filler and pump, giving you access to 115L of water.

This refined model is ideal for those that need the off road ability of a Toy Hauler, but may not be living off the Toy Hauler for long periods of time. The TT730 is designed specifically for a race team and is the ultimate recovery platform for trophy trucks, bikes and buggies.

Patriot Campers Toy Haulers vary mostly in size, with many features shared across the three models. The deck itself has been manufactured to the maximum legal width to allow for as much Toy Hauling capacity as possible.

The wheel guards are reinforced with marine-grade aluminium, so you can park your toys directly on top and utilise every inch of space available.  When not in use for storage, these reinforced spaces can also double as benchtops and are positioned at the right height, they make for practical preparation areas at camp.

The Toy Hauler chassis is interlocked, galvanised and hot-dipped for maximum strength and minimal weight.  The damage-resistant, hardwearing 5mm thick aluminium plate lets you put any kind of toy on the deck without having to worry. This aluminium plate also provides grip, so you won’t have to worry about anything loaded sliding around on the back.

Together, the chassis and the deck integrate for a seamless construction; earning the Toy Hauler the ‘Unstoppable’ badge, as this massive rig is almost as nimble as our X-Range of camper trailers.  Underneath, engineers have protected all vulnerable areas to deflect stones, and heavy-duty bash guards have been fitted to the sides of the Toy Hauler to protect against wayward obstacles while on or off road.

As the deck is the maximum legal Australian width, these bash guards will take a beating if you find yourself stuck on a tight track.  Behind the base camp module or storage box at the front, you’ll also find a dedicated space for your own high lift jack and a mounted set of Maxtrax , which are ideal for assisting in off road recoveries.

Tying down your toys has been made easy with the Anchor-Flex points embedded into the deck. These feature side to side adjustability, and a 360 degree, swivelling tie-down point, load rated to suit any type of off road toy.  The winning combination of adjustability and strength gives you the freedom to tour with confidence behind any rated 4wd, knowing your gear will stay exactly where you left it, even in the most corrugated conditions.

With a Patriot Campers Toy Hauler, you can tow almost any configuration of ATVs, mountain bikes and dirt bikes, tinnies or kayaks, and anything else you can strap down. Or when you’re itching to hit the race track, load up the side by side.

COMPLETE OFF ROAD BASECAMP

Whether you’re camping with your closest mates, or with the entire family, the Camper Trailer module at the front of the TH610 and TH730 models offers a complete base camp for your next getaway. This complete base camp packs accommodation, storage, power, and utilities into an extremely compact unit.

Similar to the X1-N , the Base Camp module on the front of our Toy Haulers fits a number of Roof Top Tent options, so you can choose the accommodation option that suits you best. Some of the most popular options include; James Baroud Evasion, iKamper SkyCamp 4, iKamper X-Cover, or the Darche Hi-View 1800.

Both the TH610 and TH730 models also come equipped with a 180-degree awning, to provide a generous throw of shade over your campsite in a matter of minutes.

off road travel trailer toy hauler

The base camp module includes plenty of storage, equipping you with the ability to stay off the grid for longer.  Totalling over 2400L these storage areas are accessible through anti-vibration latches designed to keep your gear secure, dust-free while preventing the compartments from shaking open on unruly tracks and corrugations or while taking the Toy Hauler off road.

The clever storage spaces in the TH610 and TH730 Basecamp Module allow for both bulky storage and wet storage. This is perfect for racing helmets, boots, fishing gear, wet clothes and hunting equipment.  Our Toy Haulers tend to go on longer, rougher trips, and so we’ve included more wet storage in them than our camper trailers.

Every internal storage compartment is fully carpeted with marine-grade carpet, and a dry food storage drawer rolls out to reveal plenty of food storage.

off road travel trailer toy hauler

There’s nothing harder to get in the middle of the outback than a decent meal, that’s why our Toy Haulers have been designed with the L-Shaped kitchen.

The Patriot Campers L-Shaped Kitchen starts with after you open the door to roll out your choice of portable fridge, a kitchen sink and cutlery compartments. This is contained all in the one, sturdy slide which comes complete with a stabilizer leg for longer stays.  Next, simply unlatch your side compartment, for access to the pantry and stainless steel scratch-resistant food preparation areas.

The kitchen has direct access to the 115L water tank, and the gas hot water system. When used together, the water pump delivers temperature-controlled water straight to the kitchen sink. After washing up in the kitchen sink, attach the drainage hose, so you can drain the water away from camp.

If you decide to option on a secondary water tank then you will have easy access to either 115L or 230L of water. When used with the gas hot water system, the water pump delivers temperature-controlled water straight to the kitchen sink.  The gas hot water system also comes with a showerhead attachment, which is long enough to set up metres away from camp, to avoid water run-off into the campsite, for no-fuss hot showers.

THE MAN CAVE

At the front of the Base Camp Module, you’ll find the front box, or what we have dubbed ‘Man Cave’.  Unlatch the lid and you’ll find a utility shelf and a BBQ swing away platform specially designed to fit a Weber BabyQ.

The entire front box is marine carpeted, much like the other storage areas in the base camp module. This area is ideal for storing jerry cans or any other bulky items, and the utility shelf offers a unique storage solution for hoses, straps, tools, and BBQ equipment.

On either side of the mancave, there are two gas bottle holders, perfectly placed for quick access when firing up the BBQ or setting up the outdoor shower.

off road travel trailer toy hauler

When going off-grid with toys, you are going to need a lot of power. With a number of power inputs and outputs the Toy Hauler Base Module is designed to keep all of your gear charged and ready to go.

Powering the base camp module is a total of 300 amp hours of power, routed through the Redarc Battery Management System, delivering power to all 12 volt outlets and a 350 watt inverter.  Charging can be done through a 240 volt input, vehicle charging through the anderson plug, or through solar inputs. And thanks to the Manager 30, you have full visibility of your power input and draw.

There’s nothing like the atmosphere at camp, and with the Toy Haulers powerful Fusion Stereo Speaker System and LED Utility lighting, your campsite will become the heart of your trip, for added comfort in the wilderness.

GO ANYWHERE, GET OFFROAD

Just like Patriot’s X-Range of camper trailers; Patriot Campers Toy Haulers are built to be UNSTOPPABLE. Haul your toys to remote, untouched destinations and live out of your Toy Hauler for days or weeks on end.

The DO35 hitch from Cruisemaster offers a seamless, drop-on attachment, with 360-degree articulation to tackle the toughest tracks and avoid drawbar twisting.

The suspension under the Toy Hauler models was made to eat up off road tracks. The XT All Terrain, dual shock suspension system with double convoluted Air Bags is made to withstand the weight of any gear in harsh off road conditions, floating over uneven obstacles in a way that you would only expect from a Patriot Camper.

Underneath the chassis, you’ll find the spare, spacesaver tyre, and two super heavy-duty aluminium ramps that make the deck accessible for motorised gear. The ramps are long enough to provide the ideal incline, which is not too steep to comfortably load your toys on to the deck. Lightweight for easy handling, these ramps tuck away underneath the chassis once you’re finished with them.

Also located on the deck is a convenient service hatch, which provides easy access to the airbags, suspension and 12 inch electric drum brakes.  The  self-levelling airbag suspension system comes standard on the TH610 and TH730 models. Due to the load that is put on these rigs, we wouldn’t fit it with anything else, and this gives you the ability to automatically level your toy hauler once you get to camp.

The Toy Haulers also feature an inbuilt air compressor outlet, which you can use to pump up the tyres of the Toy Hauler, or on any of the toys you bring with you.  To round out the suite of off road features are mud-terrain tyres as standard in PCOR alloy wheels.

Patriot Campers Toy Haulers are built to tackle the toughest off road conditions, so you can haul all of your toys in a number of configurations to suit different trips and applications.  Pair that with the accommodation, power and utilities packed into the base camp module of the TH610 and TH730, and you’ve got a self-sustaining, thriving campsite for days or weeks at a time.

Contact your local Patriot Campers dealer for more information on the Toy Hauler Range, which is available now, worldwide.

Rig Roundup: 7 Best RVs for Going Off the Grid

It's worth researching a variety of trailers before choosing your next rig. Here are some of the best off-grid travel trailers on the market right now.

By Roadtrippers

Thanks to their mobility and self-contained nature, RVs are ideal for creating unforgettable adventures, even far from traditional campgrounds. Luckily there are many lightweight travel trailers specifically designed for off-grid RV excursions. And good news for your wallet—many of them can be towed with an SUV, so no truck purchase is required to tow your new trailer.

Important Features to Look for in Off-Grid RVs

If you want to leave the campground in your rearview mirror and head off the grid, it’s important to purchase an RV that’s designed for rugged terrain and boondocking conditions. Here are some features that will keep you safe and comfortable even while camping far from shore power and bathhouses.

12-Volt and Propane Appliances

When you can’t hook up to shore power, you’ll want your refrigerator, cooktop, oven, and TV to work on 12-volt batteries or propane gas. Avoid residential appliances as they will require a more robust energy draw.

Solar Prewiring or Manufacturer Solar Packages

If there is even a small possibility that you will add an aftermarket solar package, make sure you look for an RV that is prewired for solar. Better yet, find one that is prewired for an inverter as well, which will allow you to use 110-volt power even while boondocking. Many of the RV models featured in this roundup offer roof-mounted solar kits as optional upgrades. We highly recommend choosing the manufacturer packages when available.

Large Fresh Water Tanks

The size of your fresh water tank is an important consideration when camping off the grid. These tanks vary greatly in size from trailer to trailer, so make note of this feature when shopping. You’ll see that within this article’s featured RVs, the fresh water tanks are anywhere from eight gallons to 55 gallons, which is a large variance within the same class of travel trailer.

Large Gray Water and Black Water Tanks

The bigger your gray and black water tanks are, the longer you can use your sink, shower, and toilet without needing to dump them. Note that some travel trailers within this category won’t have any gray or black water tanks, some have combo tanks, and others have separate tanks that are up to 30 gallons each. Pick a model that suits your needs.

Robust Frames and Raised Axles

If you want to take your travel trailer down unpaved roads and over rugged terrain, make sure you look for solid framing and raised axles that provide plenty of ground clearance. Many trailers in this class also offer all-terrain tires as either standard or an optional upgrade.

Off-Grid Travel Trailers We Love

Does an off-grid trailer fit your lifestyle? These travel trailers are some of the best on the market and will make your next boondocking or off-roading adventure more comfortable.

A rugged black travel trailer with its awning out, parked on a sandy beach

inTech O-V-R Expedition Off-Grid Travel Trailer

The latest off-roading lineup from inTech makes off-grid adventures comfortable and spacious for the whole family. The O-V-R lineup offers three models, ranging from a toy hauler to the smaller, 5,200-pound Expedition travel trailer. When purchased with inTech’s off-grid package, this rig comes with 400 watts of solar power, a 200-amp hour lithium battery, and a 2,000-watt inverter charger.

The interior features a spacious U-shaped dinette, a full-size kitchen with a farmhouse sink, two twin-sized beds, an optional drop-down bunk bed, and a large wet bath. Plus, there’s plenty of storage space throughout, and the dinette can also be used for sleeping space.

Features and options we love for off-grid adventures:

Although this rig is equipped to take you to remote destinations, the interior provides all of the comforts that you’d expect from a travel trailer. Plus, with the optional drop-down bunk, you’ll have plenty of room to bring the kids along for your adventures.

More information on this off-grid travel trailer can be found here .

The three-way refrigerator and selection of 12-volt, USB, and 110-volt outlets will allow you to keep everything powered whether you’re hooked up at a campground or dry camping. If you’re just beginning your hunt for a truck camper, Lance has a helpful and detailed compatibility guide .

Think about adding the 100-watt solar panel and lithium battery if you plan to boondock, and the 19-inch, 12-volt TV if you still want to enjoy the creature comforts of home.

More information on this off-grid travel trailer can be found here .

Airstream Basecamp

The Basecamp trailer is designed to pair well with midsize SUVs that many off-road adventurers already own. Large wheels, side skirts, and wheel flares protect the camper from the gravel and debris on unpaved roads. There are four different floor plans available, ranging from 16 to 20 feet in length, and all versions include an onboard restroom with a toilet and shower. Goodyear tires and 12-volt tank heaters also come standard.

Buyers can upgrade to a 200-watt solar package. Get extra ground clearance with the Basecamp X-Package, which features a 3-inch lift, Goodyear Wrangler tires, and a raised hitch jack pad.

Jayco Jay Feather Micro

Introduced in 2021, the Jayco Jay Feather Micro lineup features four different floor plans designed to take you off the beaten path, while still providing a high level of comfort. The 166FBS has 16-inch diameter Goodyear tires with reinforced wheel wells and is prepped for roof-mounted solar power and prewired for an inverter. It also contains a 55-gallon fresh water tank. The JayPort external propane connection makes it easy to hook up the included 17-inch grill.

Features and options we love for off-grid adventures :

One optional solar power package includes a 200-watt solar panel and a 30-amp controller, and another adds the 1,800-watt inverter. Add a Thule roof rack system or bike storage rack if you like to travel with your toys.

Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX

The Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX trailer lineup consists of four different floor plans that range from 22 to 22.5 feet in length. The H172BH is particularly attractive to adventurous couples or small families, offering bunk beds and a large dinette with bed conversion.

At less than 22 feet long and less than 4,200 pounds in dry weight, the Micro Minnie FLX is easy to tow for most SUVs and Trucks.

Rockwood Geo Pro

The Rockwood Geo Pro offers a wide range of floor plans, from a 15-foot travel trailer to a 20-foot toy hauler. The entire series comes equipped with 200-watt, roof-mounted solar panels and a 1,000-watt inverter. Most models offer a 12-volt TV, Teton All In One Wi-Fi Booster with LTE Prep and Antenna, and Showermiser water conservation system. The G15TB floor plan has rear twin-sized beds that can convert into a king-sized bed depending on what layout you need.

Buyers can add on Pro Rac mounting bars, a removable ladder, a second 200-watt solar panel, and a tongue-mount bike rack.

A rugged off-grid trailer with an outdoor kitchen and open awning

Palomino Pause Travel Trailer 20.3

While some details are yet to be released, this off-roading rig is already causing a stir. The Pause is perfect for solo travelers or couples looking to go off the beaten path. Ruggedly constructed with an aluminum frame; composite walls, flooring, and roofing; and independent suspension, this towable is built to handle all of the bumps and turns of an off-road adventure. The cozy, stylish interior comes with a spacious dry bath, a full-sized kitchen with bar seating, and a foldable queen-sized bed that’s perfectly placed under a large dual-pane window for stargazing. An integrated Garmin navigation system comes standard on all models, as does 200 watts of solar power, a 400-amp hour Lithium battery, and a 3,000-watt inverter charger.

The dry weight of this rig is expected to be nearly 7,000 pounds, and the anticipated MSRP is projected to be more than $100,000.

FEATURES AND OPTIONS WE LOVE FOR OFF-GRID ADVENTURES:

The Pause comes with an offboard air compressor for easy tire inflation and deflation, and the outdoor kitchen comes fully equipped with cooking space, storage, a sink, and a fridge. You can also upgrade your solar package to 1,000 watts.

A Note on Rig Specs

It’s important to pay close attention to specs when shopping for a travel trailer. Use the VIN (vehicle identification number) to find the towing capacity and payload capacity for your specific tow vehicle.

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

The maximum loaded weight of your trailer as determined by the manufacturer. You should never exceed this weight rating when your RV is stocked with all of your gear, propane, and fresh water.

UVR (Unloaded Vehicle Rating)

The weight of your trailer as manufactured with no cargo, propane, or water.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

This is the difference between your UVR and your GVWR, telling you how much weight you can safely add to your trailer. Pay close attention to the cargo carrying capacity if you intend to travel with a lot of gear.

Tongue Weight

This is the amount of weight pressing down on the hitch ball that is attached to your tow vehicle. It is extremely important to make sure that the tongue weight of a travel trailer does not exceed your tow vehicle’s payload capacity.
