Take a Picture of the Hollywood Sign

A trip to Los Angeles isn’t complete until you see the city’s famous Hollywood sign. Set high up on a hill overlooking the city, the Hollywood Sign is visible from several vantage points. If you’re looking for a way to get closer, go on a shore excursion that includes a nearby photo op, where you’ll be able to pose in front of the iconic sign.

Where should I eat in Los Angeles?

Cruises from Los Angeles give you the opportunity to try some of LA’s fantastic restaurants before you set off on your vacation. Los Angeles is full of trendy restaurants that are run by some of the most renowned chefs in the world. Look for authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood, including everything from fish tacos to locally caught and exquisitely prepared whole filets of fish at waterfront restaurants. Southern California’s sunny weather and low chance of rain also makes it a fantastic place for outdoor dining. There are beer gardens, patios perched on the beachside cliffs of Malibu, and rooftop bars downtown, where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a refreshing drink under the California sun.

What's the culture and history of Los Angeles?

Los Angeles was originally home to the Chumash and Tongva people. Eventually, the area was claimed by Spain by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. It wasn’t until 1781 that the city was officially founded by the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. In 1821, L.A. came under Mexican rule after the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, the city was purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. A boom in the city’s population occurred several decades later when oil was discovered in the region in the 1890s. Today, Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, home to over four million residents. While a large number of the population works in the entertainment industry, L.A. is also the financial and commercial center of Southern California.

Where can I go shopping in Los Angeles?

If you have dreams of sauntering down Rodeo Drive with your arms full of bags, head to the famous Beverly Hills area, which is full of luxury boutiques and designer brands. If you want to do some serious shopping without dropping a small fortune, head to Venice Beach and Santa Monica, where you’ll find an assortment of popular brand names mixed with affordable boutiques and beachwear shops.

How can I get around Los Angeles?

The best way to get around in Los Angeles is by car, as there aren’t many public transportation options that will take you all around the city. The bus system has several routes, but it’s important to account for traffic delays, no matter what form of transportation you choose. Therefore, booking a shore excursion is a smart way to guarantee that you’ll arrive at your ship on time.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency of Los Angeles is the U.S. dollar, and you will find many ATMs all around the city. Tipping 15% to 20% of your total bill is customary for restaurants and taxi service, and most locals leave closer to 20%. It’s common to see a tip jar at eateries and cafes with counter service. Loose change or a small tip isn’t expected, but is often left by locals and appreciated by the staff of those establishments.

In One Day in Los Angeles

Seeing the top sights of Los Angeles in a single day requires an early start and a bit of stamina, but it's quite doable. This "greatest hits" itinerary begins with L.A.'s sine qua non attraction, Hollywood. After lunch, you'll cruise along Sunset Boulevard west to the beach and spend a few hours on foot touring the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. In warm months, you'll conclude your day with a live performance under the stars at the legendary Hollywood Bowl.

Start: Corner of Gower Street and Hollywood Boulevard, and walk west.

1. Hollywood Walk of Fame

Forget the culture/museum stuff—it's time to see for yourself all those famous Hollywood sites you've watched on TV since you were a toddler. Start the day by spending the morning on Hollywood Boulevard, following the path of bronze-and-marble stars along the Walk of Fame. Since 1960 more than 2,400 celebrities have been honored along the world's most famous sidewalk, but you'll need an old-timer to explain who a lot of the now-long-dead entertainers were. For a few bucks, you can buy a map that lists every star; better yet, log on to www.walkoffame.com/starfinder . There's also a free Official Hollywood Walk of Fame smartphone app.

On Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and La Brea avenues, you'll find:

2. TCL Chinese Theatre

It's sort of a tourist rite of passage to compare your hands and feet with the famous prints set in cement at the entrance court to this theater—a tradition started when silent-film star Norma Talmadge "accidentally" stepped in wet cement during the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's King of Kings. Because it's along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you're already here. Go ahead: Compare your shoes to footprints left by Humphrey Bogart or Marilyn Monroe. There are about 160 celebrity squares to scrutinize: See if you can find Whoopi Goldberg's dreadlocks, Bob Hope's nose, Betty Grable's gams, and R2D2's wheels.

Stay at the Chinese Theatre for the:

3. Movie Stars' Homes Tour

Oh, c'mon! You know you want to do it. It's not like you're the only one who feels slightly guilty by paying to peek into the private lives of Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston, and Nicolas Cage (hey, nobody forced them to buy a home around Hollywood). Besides, you're already here. Just buy a ticket at the Starline Tours kiosk, hop into a minibus, and let the voyeurism begin.

4. Take a Break: Musso & Frank Grill

Time for lunch. Walk down the street to Musso & Frank Grill , Hollywood's oldest restaurant (since 1919) and a paragon of Hollywood's halcyon-era grillrooms. Part restaurant, part museum, this is where Faulkner, Hemingway, and Orson Welles derived liquid inspiration during their screenwriting days. Slither into one of the red-leather booths, order one of the legendary martinis or bloody marys from the gruff red-coated waiters, and order a perfectly cooked ribeye. 6667 Hollywood Blvd. (at Cherokee Ave.).

After lunch, waddle to your rented convertible red Mustang (you did rent a convertible red Mustang, didn't you?), put in a Best of the Beach Boys CD, and slowly cruise the legendary:

5. Sunset Boulevard and The Sunset Strip

This 1-hour-or-so drive takes you from sorta-seedy Hollywood to flamboyant West Hollywood, past the moneyed minimansions of Beverly Hills, through neighborhoods most people can't afford to live in such as Westside and Brentwood, winding your way into the secluded enclave of Pacific Palisades toward Malibu, and finally the Pacific Coast Highway ("PCH," if you're hip). The winding drive takes you through a cross section of nearly everything the western side of Los Angeles has to offer.

Drive south on the PCH into the big-city beach town of Santa Monica, and park at the:

6. Santa Monica Pier

Built in 1908 for passenger and cargo ships, the Santa Monica Pier does a pretty good job of recapturing the glory days of Southern California. Buy an ice-cream cone at one of the snack shacks and stroll seaward past the wooden carousel, roller coaster, and arcades, then buy a ticket to ride the Ferris wheel.

From the pier, walk south to the carnival-like stretch known as:

7. Venice Beach's Ocean Front Walk

For first-timers, this pseudo-bohemian scene is a bit of a shock to the senses: a surreal assemblage of street performers, musicians, bodybuilders pumping serious iron, apocalyptic evangelists, break dancers, stoned drummers, and endless schlock shops. By now your feet are probably talking to you, so stop at one of the outdoor cafes and have a beer while taking in the scene. This is also where you can rent a bike and cruise along the 8-mile bike path that runs along the beach.

Pile into the convertible and cruise northeast on Santa Monica Boulevard all the way across town (or take I-10 east to Hwy. 110 north to Hwy. 101 north) to the:

8. Hollywood Bowl

We've saved the best for last. Everybody is impressed by the Bowl, an elegant, Greek-style natural outdoor amphitheatre cradled in a small canyon north of Hollywood. Truly, it's one of L.A.'s grandest traditions, watching a live performance under the stars on a warm summer night while noshing on crackers, cheese, and wine. It's the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl orchestras, and often hosts internationally known conductors, soloists, and pop acts. Here's how you do the Bowl the fanciest and easiest way: Reserve a box seat section as far in advance as possible, then preorder a gourmet picnic basket filled with hot and cold dishes, desserts, and fine wines from the excellent onsite catering department, which will deliver the goodies to your box once you arrive.

Tip : For those on more of a budget, go for more moderately priced rear seats (there are two huge monitors, after all), and pick up a simple dinner from a local deli or grocery store, where you can also purchase wine (the Bowl is BYO-friendly for events it puts together; concerts that rent the Bowl have stricter rules). You'll save money and still have a great time.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

one day cruise in los angeles

When we talk about cruising from Los Angeles, fyi: we’re talking about cruises from Long Beach. A short drive from LA is where you’ll find this seaside Southern California city that’s inseparable from its big-city neighbor, while undeniably moving to its own local beat. Dotted with dozens of parks, beaches and multiple public golf courses (fore times five!), Long Beach also boasts perhaps the world’s most unique hotel — located aboard the old-time ocean liner The Queen Mary (which is haunted, or so go the rumors). You can experience it before one of Carnival’s cruises from Long Beach, but definitely don’t miss the glitzy, big-city Los Angeles — the right place to experience the left-coast life. Take in the storied sights of this City of Angels, from its modern museums and high-end shopping to its funky seaside towns and star-studded SoCal sights dotting the hills and boulevards. Hollywood — hooray! So if you’re dreaming about a cruise from Los Angeles, remember: Carnival’s cruises from Long Beach are just the ticket.

  • Climb aboard the Queen Mary , a glamorous 1930s ocean liner.
  • Find your favorite star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

One Day in Los Angeles Itinerary: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Posted on Published: February 1, 2020  - Last updated: February 16, 2024

Categories Blog , California , City Guides , Travel Guides , United States

When you only have one day in Los Angeles, planning a trip can seem overwhelming. There are just so many things to do in Los Angeles, California; you could spend weeks in LA and still have more to see and do.

However, sometimes we only have a day in any particular place, so it’s all about making the most of our time there. I had only one day in LA before embarking on a cruise. Here are the best things to do in Los Angeles in one day, and exactly how I planned my Los Angeles itinerary.

Posts may be sponsored. Post contains affiliate links. I may be compensated if you make a purchase using my link.

One day in Los Angeles itinerary

Not only is it difficult deciding what to do in Los Angeles, but it’s made even more challenging due to its sprawling nature. On top of that, there’s the traffic. Getting from point A to point B in LA can take hours and hours, even if you aren’t going very far. If you only have one day in LA, I suggest limiting your commute within a reasonable distance so you don’t spend half of your day in an Uber.

Street art in Los Angeles in Venice Beach

Ready for an exciting and super fun day in Los Angeles? I traveled there with my sister, and we were able to do all of the following activities within a day. Our flight landed in LA that morning. We left the airport that morning and did all of the following activities.

This Los Angeles itinerary is totally doable, if you don’t mind one that’s action packed. If you love traveling at a slower pace, perhaps knock a couple of these suggestions off the list so it isn’t too wild or crazy.

Exploring Venice

Venice Sign - Los Angeles one day itinerary

Venice is one of my favorite places to visit in Los Angeles. It’s a little quieter than other spots in the city. You can enjoy the breeze off the ocean, listen to the crashing waves at the beach, and go people watching at the boardwalk. Start your day in Venice. Even if you spend all day here, I think that’s a wonderful way to spend 1 day in Los Angeles.

Venice Beach and Boardwalk

Venice Beach - One day in Los Angeles itinerary

Looking for a gorgeous beach in LA? Head straight to Venice Beach. It’s a expansive stretch of powdery sand with crashing waves and a dramatic mountainous backdrop. You can’t go to California without hitting up the beach, right? Make Venice Beach your first stop on your Los Angeles one day itinerary.

Venice Beach - How to spend one day in Los Angeles

Next, venture over to the Venice Beach boardwalk. It’s a lengthy paved path where you can go for a stroll and do a little bit of shopping. You’ll see lots of interesting characters on your way. Check out the  Venice Skate Park or the  Muscle Beach Gym , once the home gym of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. You’ll watch some of the fittest people lifting heavy objects or you can even join them for a workout.

Venice Beach Boardwalk - One day in Los Angeles Itinerary

The Venice Canals

Have you heard of the Venice Canals, also known as “Venice of America”? The  Venice Canals  are 100 year old man made canals. Developer Abbot Kinney wanted to import the concept of Venice, Italy to California, complete with canals and gondoliers. Unfortunately, the project didn’t take off like he expected. Even still, the Venice Canals are a wonderful hidden gem in Los Angeles. With only one day in Los Angeles, I highly recommend adding the Venice Canals to your travel plans.

Street art of Venice - Venice of America

This landmark is truly the next best thing to its Italian counterpart. We loved strolling across several bridges, spotting million dollar homes, and little parks around each corner. There is even a small duck pond with a sign, “Do not enter – ducks only!”. You’ll also view lots of street art in Venice, even around the Venice Canals themselves. If you’re exploring Los Angeles in a day, don’t miss the Venice Canals.

Venice Canals Duck Park - What to do in Los Angeles in one day

Breakfast or Lunch in Venice

I loved dining at  Cafe Gratitude  in Venice. Cafe Gratitude is a small chain of vegan restaurants, primarily in Los Angeles. Their plant-based meals are thoughtfully prepared and all come paired with descriptive feelings or adjectives. For instance, we ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings, which were also labeled as “Eclectic”. My Macrobiotic Bowl was also called “Whole”.

Cafe Gratitude -Vegan restaurant in Los Angeles

Before dining, we were presented with a “question of the day” by our server, which we embraced as a conversation piece at our table. We discussed all that we were grateful for before the food arrived at the table, which was a really peaceful and kind concept.

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier - Los Angeles in a day

Santa Monica Pier is an iconic place to visit in Los Angeles. Its the end of Route 66, there’s a small amusement park, and then there’s another beautiful beach. Spend at least a couple of hours wandering around the Santa Monica Pier to enjoy the views, go on some rides, and perhaps grab a drink or a bite to eat (I ordered a delicious iced coffee here!).

The End of Route 66

End of Route 66 at Santa Monica Pier

There’s a sign to mark the official end of Route 66 at the Santa Monica Pier. You can use the Santa Monica Pier as a starting point for a road trip of Route 66! Or, you can be tourists like us, and take your photo with the sign.

Pacific Park

Pacific Park , an amusement park, is the main attraction of the Santa Monica Pier. You should definitely take the Ferris wheel for a spin. It’s a one of a kind solar powered Ferris wheel, and there are amazing views from the top of it. After riding the Ferris wheel and the small roller coaster, we walked up and down the wooden pier to catch glimpses of the ocean.

Ferris Wheel at Santa Monica Pier - Pacific Park

Griffith Observatory

For more fun things to do in Los Angeles in one day, take a trip up to Griffith Park and the  Griffith Observatory . Even if you only have 1 day in Los Angeles, you should find time to go there as it was one of my favorite spots. However, you’ll want to plan accordingly – don’t head to the Griffith Observatory during peak traffic hours. If it’s anytime after 3:00pm, you might not make it in time for the sunset. We took our Uber at 3:30pm and arrived at 6:15pm, getting there for dusk but missing the sun going down. I’d leave the Santa Monica Pier by 2:30pm or 3:00pm at the latest.

Griffith Observatory at night - Things to do in Los Angeles in one day

The Griffith Observatory overlooks Los Angeles for amazing views, and it’s a great place to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood Sign. After we took in scenes of the city lights and the night sky, we caught a live planetarium show at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium. Our show, “Light of the Valkyries”, was one of the best planetarium shows I’ve ever seen. If you’re a fan of outer space, spectacular light shows, or even just learning something new, don’t miss it.  Tip: You can also catch the  DASH Observatory bus  to get there if you don’t have a car or don’t want to take a car sharing service.

Hollywood is one of the most famous places to see in Los Angeles. We didn’t spend much time in Hollywood, but took a trip down after visiting the Griffith Observatory. We had dinner in Hollywood and then took a quick jaunt down the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Dinner in Hollywood

Veggie Grill - Vegan restaurant in Los Angeles

For dinner, check out the  Veggie Grill  location in Hollywood. This vegan fast food chain has tons of menu selections, including burgers, sandwiches, bowls, salads, tacos, and more. I ordered a classic veggie burger with fries and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The restaurant was packed with people, but the line moved quickly and we got our food pretty fast. Don’t miss this plant-based LA favorite when traveling here.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Hollywood Walk of Fame - Visiting Los Angeles for 1 day

It might seem a little touristy, but a first timers’ trip to Los Angeles is not complete without checking out the Hollywood Walk of Fame. While it wasn’t even close to being one of my favorite things to do in Los Angeles in one day, it’s one of those places you’ve just gotta see. Don’t feel guilty leaving this one off the list if you run out of time.

David Bowie Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is much larger than I expected, spanning several city blocks. We aimlessly walked along and didn’t recognize many of the names on the stars, but we did stumble upon a few notable ones.

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

Spend the night in Venice at Ellison Suites, just one street away from the beach. Every suite in this historic hotel, dating back to 1913, is uniquely designed and feels more like a little apartment than a hotel room.

Where to stay in Los Angeles - Ellison Suites in Venice Beach

After the original owners, the Ellisons, comedy duo Laurel and Hardy purchased the property. In the 1950s, the hotel became apartments and was often frequented by Jim Morrison. Our suite was the perfect home away from home, with its own kitchenette, bedroom, and pullout couch. From our room, we woke up to a beautiful view of the beach from our window.

Where to stay in Los Angeles - Ellison Suites in Venice Beach

You can easily walk all over Venice from the Ellison Suites, and the Santa Monica Pier is a short bike ride away. If you’re spending one day in Los Angeles (or longer!), this hotel is the best home base for exploring the city, especially if you’d like to see Venice and Santa Monica.

Want some more options? There are so many awesome hotels in Los Angeles and Airbnb accommodations . Here’s a handy booking tool where you can see all of the Booking.com accommodations and Airbnbs in one place. It’s easy to compare prices and find the best rate for your trip to LA.

  • San Francisco

Canada's third largest city feels like a North American metropolis mixed with a small European town. Explore the rainforest within Vancouver, B.C. — Stanley Park — and visit the continent's second largest Chinatown during your Alaska cruise vacation. Soar above the city's lush natural environment in a sky gondola for panoramic views, or get up close to the local sea life at the Vancouver Aquarium.

It’s not hard to see why San Francisco has captured so many hearts and minds. World-class cuisine, iconic architecture, diverse neighborhoods and history all wait at your fingertips. Ride the ferry to Alcatraz, or tour Sonoma wine country and taste some of the world's best wines on a cruise to Alaska from San Francisco.

Cloaked in nautical artifacts and Victorian homes, Astoria continues to retain its 19th-century charm. On a California Coast getaway cruise, visit historic sites like Fort Stevens State Park and Astoria. Sip on Astoria ales or Oregon wines, and see one of the best-preserved examples of Queen Anne-style architecture at the Flavel House. Or get up close to hundreds of antiquities at the Columbia River Maritime Museum.

Known for its beaches, parks and renowned San Diego Zoo, this city has something for everyone. An urban downtown with great nightlife, a south-of-the-border feeling in Old Town, thrilling shows at Sea World Adventure Park or a tour of aircraft-carrier-turned-museum, USS Midway. Art galleries, gardens or tours of the county’s wineries, all await in San Diego on a West Coast getaway cruise.

What to Do on a California Coast Getaway Cruise

Reconnect with nature or relax with a glass of Napa Valley wine in hand on a three-day cruise. From San Diego to Vancouver and every port between, refresh your mind and come back rejuvenated on Pacific Coast Getaways.

Stanley Park in Vancouver

Alcatraz, pier 39 & more in san francisco, columbia river maritime museum in astoria.

In the heart of Vancouver’s metropolis lies a 1,000-acre rainforest teeming with wildlife and natural beauty. On a three-day cruise from Los Angeles or Pacific Coastal Getaways from San Francisco, discover hidden gems tucked inside the city’s park — like the aquarium and Totem Pole Park. Or hike the trails, bike along the seawall path or cross the Lynn Suspension Bridge for unparalleled views of the forest.

From riding cable cars to sampling fresh bay shrimp, experience it all in The Golden City. On short cruises from San Francisco, visit Alcatraz and walk in the footsteps of famous prisoners from the past. Spend the day shopping at Pier 39, and enjoy lunch at one of the waterside restaurants. Or head to Sonoma and Napa Valley to experience California’s famous Wine Country, where you can sip on award-winning vino.

Travel through time as you peruse the exhibits of Astoria’s Columbia River Maritime Museum, home to one of the nation's finest displays of model ships and nautical artifacts. During a Pacific Coast getaway, enjoy interactive exhibits, watch short films and get up close to over 30,000 maritime objects. Or admire the 44-foot Coast Guard rescue boat suspended mid-air, and tour the floating lighthouse, known as Columbia.

California Coast shore excursions

From beach breaks to historical tours, find excursions for everyone on Pacific Coast getaways, say hello to the sea lions lounging on Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf. Follow the stars along Hollywood’s Walk of Fame or shop along famous Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. The Best Itinerary If You Only Have One Day In Los Angeles

Downtown Los Angeles palm trees

If you only have one day to see Los Angeles, you're going to want to get a taste (sometimes literally) of everything this city has to offer. A whirlwind day in the City of Angels will encompass a mix of sightseeing, dining, and activities, and when you have more time, go off the beaten path in Los Angeles to explore LA's weirder side. But if you only have one day, based on personal experience with countless trips to Los Angeles, we've designed an itinerary that should satisfy most types of travelers, from art aficionados to food truck foodies.

One day isn't enough to see "everything" in Los Angeles — the traffic will see to that. But the city has something for everyone, so whatever you get into on this itinerary, we're sure it will be worth it. You'll get your fill of cultural attractions — be they high-brow, low-brow, or somewhere in between — and Los Angeles is an active person's paradise, with plenty of activities and attractions to get you moving. Lastly, you will eat in Los Angeles — a lot. There's something for every palate in La-La Land, but as your one day in LA is about fun, consider this guide your permission slip to eat like you're on vacation.

Grab breakfast at The Original Farmer's Market

Just like your parents said, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so fill'er up at The Original Farmer's Market . The market at Fairfax and West 3rd is no rinky-dinky affair — it was established in 1934 and remains a central spot to get top-quality seafood, meats, produce, baked goods, and confections. The Farmer's Market is a great spot in itself to wander around if you have time. But today, you don't — so make it quick at Du-Par's (stall 210), a local haunt since 1938 that, according to Los Angeles Magazine, serves some of the best butter-infused hotcakes in the city. Of course, there are all manner of good eats at Du-Par's, such as the mac 'n' cheese, crab cakes, and pies, but there are more options at the market.

If you're eating on the go, hit the ground running at Bob's Coffee & Donuts (stall 450). Owner Bob Tusquellas has been serving exquisite coffee and fresh, delectable donuts since 1970. All donuts and baked goods, such as Bob's famous cinnamon rolls, are hand-made daily. If this is all too heavy, LA has a slew of top-notch acai bowl options to get you going. And before you head out into Los Angeles, grab a New York-style pickle at Kaylin+Kaylin. Spear a spicy dill, a honey mustard, or a kosher dill. And if you think pickles are gross in the morning, you're simply missing out.

Stroll or paddle the Venice Canals

Post-breakfast, walk off your meal and explore the Venice Canal Historic District, one of Los Angeles' most interesting neighborhoods. The Canals are sandwiched between the Venice Boardwalk and its assortment of quirky characters to the west, and Abbot Kinney and its hipsters to the east.

Today, there are six canals to wander around, down from the original 13 canals that existed in the early 1900s. Developer Abbot Kinney (more on his legacy below) wanted his "Venice of America" development to not only evoke Italy's canals but to offer a way to get around. At the time, the automobile hadn't yet taken America by storm. So, Venice residents used boats or canoes to get around the canals, while gondoliers (like you see today in Italy) whisked tourists around on paid trips through the waterway.

By the end of the 1920s, seven of the original canals were filled to make the area more amenable to car traffic. Thankfully, six canals were spared, so take advantage. You can gawk at the gorgeous homes and charming bridges amid this one-of-a-kind area. And, if you're intrepid enough, you can also bring your own non-motorized craft to nautically experience the canals. The launch ramp is on Venice Boulevard.

Shop along Abbot Kinney Boulevard

After taking in the Venice Canals, walk 15 minutes east to Abbot Kinney Boulevard (yup, named for the canals' developer) for some shopping and a treat. Stretching from Main Street in Santa Monica and running east to Washington Boulevard, Abbot Kinney is a trendy, walkable area with plenty of hip stores, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. You'll want some souvenirs from your lone day in LA, so feel free to indulge in some of the strip's most notable spots.

At Abbot Kinney Blvd and Venice, check out Grow, which stocks uniquely Californian gifts, from Golden State-crafted candles to art, books, and accessories, all with a local twist. If your shopping itch goes beyond LA-inspired knicknacks, check out Huset. This stylish Scandinavian-inspired, local design store stocks elegantly cool home furnishings and gifts. Huset also sells dapper threads for her, him, and the kiddos (IKEA's got nothing on this place). Or, you can change your mind and grab a very-Los Angeles screen-printed T-shirt, hoodie, or sticker from Vardagen. You won't find these hand-drawn designs anywhere else.

Now, on your walk west from Grow towards Huset and Vardagen, you will pass Salt & Straw, an artisanal ice cream shop. They craft scrumptious, locally flavored ice cream, and you can even try a flight of flavors. If you're only spending one day in LA, we — in very good conscience — recommend eating ice cream in the morning.

Marvel at the art of Watts Towers

If you'd rather skip shopping and ice cream, head south from the Farmer's Market to Watts (about a 40-minute drive) for a tour of the awe-inspiring Watts Towers, one of the most unique hand-built structures in the world. In 1921, Sabato (Simon) Rodia, an Italian immigrant, started building structures in and around his Watts home. Rodia used rods and pipes to build his towers and then wrapped them in wire mesh. He then packed the structures with mortar and added all sorts of found objects into the paste — bottles, tiles, pieces of pottery, rocks, sea shells, glass, and more.

Rodia continued this quixotic project for 33 years until 1954, when a set of 17 structures, including two towers measuring 99 feet in height, stood at the site. The amazing part is that Rodia commenced building with no plans — architectural or otherwise. All he had were his two hands, some hand tools (no mechanical tools were used), and his passion to build something extraordinary.

Rodia's towers are now overseen and maintained by the Watts Towers Arts Center, founded in 1961. The center offers 30-minute guided tours of the site on Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are also rotating exhibitions within the center. Admission is free, but the Center suggests a $7 donation to help with site maintenance and upkeep.

Gawk at Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrors at The Broad

If more formal art is your speed, head east from the Market along Beverly Boulevard to The Broad (about a 25-minute drive), and take in two of artist Yayoi Kusama's remarkable Infinity Mirror Rooms. The Kusama exhibition has been a sensation at The Broad since 2013. Kusama's rooms use LED lights, water, acrylic balls, glass, and other materials to plunge visitors into a mind-blowing, spacey, immersive art experience.

Now, in case you haven't heard, Kusama's Infinity Mirror Rooms exhibition is kind of a big deal. To see the Infinity Mirror Room of "The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away," you'll need to make an online reservation (it is worth it). Kusama's second room, "Longing For Eternity," does not require a reservation.

Aside from Kusama, this world-class museum offers lots more. Exhibitions featuring the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and others are on display. And if all that art doesn't move you, the building itself might. The museum's storage vault is the building's floating anchor. The vault's bottom curves underneath itself to form part of The Broad's lobby. The vault's top acts as exhibition floor space, while the vault's large windows give visitors a peek into the museum's huge trove of stored art.

Find a literary gem at The Last Bookstore

If books are your preferred art form, Los Angeles is home to the cheekily-named The Last Bookstore , a massive and quirky used book store located in an old bank building downtown (and just a 15-minute walk south of The Broad). Browse more than 300,000 gently used and vintage books and magazines, under high ceilings and amid gorgeous marble pillars. You'll find plenty of off-the-wall sculptures too, including a "book tunnel", which is exactly what you think it is. All of these sculptures are made entirely from discarded book parts — because, of course.

The Last Bookstore organizes hardcover books by color (because why not), and its massive fiction section is organized by nothing at all. That's right — The Last Bookstore takes this willy-nilly approach to fiction shelving to let browsers discover literary gems by glorious accident. If you're completely intoxicated with the smell of old books, inquire into The Last Bookstore's periodic sleepover events, where guests can camp out amid the stacks for a night (and for a fee). After all, this is The Last Bookstore — who knows when you'll get another chance?

Grab lunch at an iconic Los Angeles taco spot

No doubt all that perambulating (either through Venice, Watts, or through downtown cultural spots) has worked up an appetite, so satiate your hunger at the original location of Leo's Tacos Truck for some of Los Angeles' best tacos. You won't be the first to be confused at the sight of Leo's Tacos Truck, which is parked on the lot of a decommissioned gas station at the corner of South La Brea and Venice (about a 15-minute drive west of downtown). Fear not, as you'll also undoubtedly see a line for the city's most delicious tacos. Park your car and get in that line.

Everything about Leo's is decidedly bare-bones. The food trucks, the salsa station, the location — but none of that matters. Known for its al pastor tacos, you'll be mesmerized by the huge piece of pork being cooked to perfection on a rotating spit. The spit itself is topped by a giant chunk of pineapple, which gets diced onto the al pastor, itself nestled into a warm tortilla. Once you have your tacos (get a few as they're small), head over to the salsa station and garnish with some onions, cilantro, and salsa of your choice.

Check out Griffith Park and the Hollywood Sign

After eating your delicious tacos, head north to Griffith Park (about a 25-minute drive), and prevent your heart from stopping with a brisk stroll through one of the largest urban wilderness parks in the country. Of course, don't feel like you have to hike all 4,210 acres, but Griffith Park features a 53-mile network of hiking paths. You could also enjoy some of the park's many bike paths, visit the Los Angeles Zoo, which sits within Griffith Park, or, if you're still hungry, have a picnic.

You can also get an up-close view of the iconic Hollywood Sign by following one of three hiking paths, which are some of the best hikes to take in Los Angeles . The Mt. Hollywood Trail and Brush Canyon Trail are considered easy and will take around two and a half hours. The Cahuenga Peak Trail is the shortest (about an hour and 45 minutes) but is considered difficult, so choose wisely.

The Hollywood Sign was originally erected in 1923 to advertise housing subdivisions but has evolved as a symbol of the city's TV and film industry. Sadly, you won't be able to capture a selfie while hanging off the sign's "H"  anymore, as the Hollywood Sign is now fenced off and guarded by police and security cameras. But you'll still get pretty close.

Explore the Griffith Observatory

If hiking isn't for you, Griffith Park is also home to the Griffith Observatory, open since 1935. The Observatory is open every day except Monday, and admission is free. While you may not be able to take full advantage of the high-powered telescopes set up for public use in the afternoon, you can still check out the Samuel Oschin Planetarium. Enjoy guided storytelling on various astronomical topics while gazing upward in this state-of-the-art (and very cozy) planetarium. Shows run for about an hour and are offered multiple times per day.

If you're hoping to have your mind blown, check out the Tesla Coil in the Wilder Hall of the Eye, which has been on display at the Observatory since 1937. Watch as huge lightning-like bolts fly off the coil and bounce off the walls. Observatory staff demonstrate the coil's awesomeness several times a day. Famed inventor Nikola Tesla created the Tesla Coil back in 1891 to carry electricity through air (as opposed to over wires). His invention didn't quite work, but being in the same room as the Observatory's Tesla Coil is ridiculously thrilling.

Wander through Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House

Los Angeles is home to several Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes, but only one — Hollyhock House — is open to the public. This architectural gem is located within Barnsdall Art Park, itself on Olive Hill in Los Feliz. It's about a 15-minute drive south from the Observatory to Hollyhock House. For $7, adults can book self-guided tours from Thursday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kids under 18 can visit free with a paying adult.

Wright's Hollyhock House is often cited as a precursor of California Modernism. Way back in 1919, oil heiress Aline Barsndall commissioned Wright to design Hollyhock House (named for her favorite flower, which appears in various forms throughout the home) as part of an audacious artist commune. The commune never came to be, but Wright's design, influenced by the California climate and seamlessly integrated into the surrounding landscape, landed firmly ahead of its time. The home's gorgeous outdoor terraces and airy, indoor spaces effortlessly blur the line between outside and in — an element that contemporary California architects strive to match. If you make it to Hollyhock House, don't forget to take in the beautiful views of the Griffith Observatory and, of course, the Hollywood Sign.

Pay a visit to The Museum of Death

Los Angeles is full of life — but it is also home to the Museum of Death (cue foreboding music), a celebration of all things death-related. The Museum of Death is about a 15-minute drive from either the Observatory or Hollyhock House. If you choose to visit, steel yourself for some eye-popping, and if we're honest, stomach-churning sights.

That said, the Museum of Death isn't meant to scare visitors. On the contrary — in 2019, Museum of Death co-founder J.D. Healy told The Los Angeles Times that "... anything you can touch someone with, that gets them thinking about death a little more, is a good thing." After all, life is finite, and if thinking about death just a little bit makes one appreciate life a bit more, well, is that a bad thing?

Naturally, the Museum of Death has lots to get one thinking about death. From serial killer art to the facility's coffin collection, and from autopsy instruments to life-size replicas of execution devices, there is plenty to get your brain racing here. As a California museum, the Museum of Death has an extensive collection of Manson Family artifacts and displays. This includes uncensored crime scene photos from the Manson Family rampage of August, 1969 — you've been warned.

Shop for records at Amoeba Music

From the Museum of Death, walk yourself back to life again with a 10-minute stroll to Amoeba Music, at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Argyle Avenue. Like The Last Bookstore, Amoeba is one of the few, iconic brick-and-mortar music stores still in existence. Amoeba is a treat to behold, with more new and used LPs, CDs, posters, books, merch, and all sorts of musical paraphernalia than the eye can see.

If you pop into the store on the right day, you could find yourself amid the audience for one of the store's famous live (and free shows). Artists ranging from the Flaming Lips, Lana Del Ray, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and more have blown the roof off Amoeba. Back in 2007, none other than Sir Paul McCartney played a live set before a gobsmacked Amoeba Hollywood crowd. You never know who you'll see at this music lover's dream.

Catch the sunset at El Matador State Beach

If you're looking for a place to relax after a long day of exploring, head to El Matador State Beach in Malibu, especially if you're spending the  weekend in Los Angeles . While it's a bit of a (scenic) drive along California Highway 1 North to get there, this beach is unlike any California beach you'll see.

Park in the El Matador lot on the blufftop, just off the highway. You'll have to pay a few dollars to park. Then, follow the path down to the beach and get knocked sideways by the gorgeous rock formations dotting the beach. If possible, explore all the caves and rock arches at low tide, and don't forget your sunscreen. El Matador can get very busy on weekends, but it's worth it. And if you're in LA during the week, it will likely be quiet. In fact, you might get El Matador all to yourself.

Finish your day in Los Angeles at Pink's

Treat yourself, Los Angeles-style (again), after a long and busy day with a delicious chili dog from Pink's Hot Dogs , about an hour and a half drive from El Matador. And, if you stuck around town near Amoeba or the Museum of Death, Pink's is just a 10-minute drive. Original owners Paul and Betty Pink invested in their first hot dog cart back in 1939, and the Pink family has been slingin' wieners ever since.

And folks, these are not your ordinary hot dogs. In fact, the food aficionados over at Food & Wine Magazine named Pink's one of the best spots in California to scarf down a hot diggity-dog. Get a famous chili dog, covered in chili, mustard, and onions. Or, try a Martha Stewart Dog, a 9-inch hot dog slathered in nacho cheese, sauteed onions, mushrooms, and bacon. Whatever you eat, you're sure to enjoy. What better way to end your day?

Los Angeles Cruise Guide

Due to its location along the Pacific Coast, many cruise itineraries to Mexico, the Panama Canal, South America, the Transpacific and Hawaii depart from the city of Los Angeles. This is the best port to find affordable getaways to the Mexican Riviera.

The port itself is actually located in Long Beach, which is a short drive away from the big-city L.A., but also has its fair share of attractions. You can stay overnight at the Queen Mary, a retired vintage luxury ocean liner that is rumored to be haunted and offers ghost tours. Take a dip in the calm waters at the beach, or take a whale watching tour along the Pacific Ocean. Once you’ve seen it all at the port, a short ride by car, Uber or the L.A. Metro brings you to the star-studded city of Los Angeles, where you can easily spend a week exploring all that it has to offer.

The city of Los Angeles is home to the biggest names in arts and culture, so it comes as no surprise that there’s a large variety of cultural attractions and museums. There are must-see art galleries like The Getty, which features classical exhibitions and artifacts, and the popular new museum, The Broad, which is free to enter, and features more modern exhibits. Music lovers can check out the GRAMMY Museum, or catch a concert at the beautifully designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Los Angeles is the birthplace of American Cinema, so there’s also a variety of studio backlot tours that you can take, like Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, NBC and more. If you catch yourself walking along the historical streets of Hollywood, be sure to look down and spot some of your favorite celebrities names on their Stars at the Walk of Fame.

There are many ways to snap a picture of the infamous Hollywood sign, depending on the angle you’d like. If you have a car you can make a pit stop along Deronda Drive, and take a quick walk over to the sign. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, take the 6-mile hike along the Brush Canyon Trail, where you’ll eventually get that picture-perfect shot. You can also see the sign from outside of the Griffith Observatory, where for a small fee you can go up to the top of the observatory and take in the best panoramic views of the city of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is also known for its diverse range of shops. For high-end designer trends, be sure to explore Rodeo Drive, where you might even run into a celebrity or two. For hip vintage and thrift shops, walk along Melrose, and for the ultimate cheap finds, check out the Los Angeles Fashion District. There’s also no shortage of food, with delicious restaurants and popular chains on every block. Los Angeles is home to In-N-Out Burger, a popular West Coast fast food chain, as well as many other restaurants owned by celebrity chefs and popular Instagram-worthy cafés.
