Paul McCartney Kicks Off 2022 North American Tour in Spokane: Recap, Photos + Setlist

The post Paul McCartney Kicks Off 2022 North American Tour in Spokane: Recap, Photos + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

Early into the opening night of the “Got Back Tour” on Thursday (April 28th), Paul McCartney pointed out an attendee’s sign held aloft. It displayed a message that this night in Spokane, Washington — McCartney’s first live show since July 2019 — marked the fan’s 124th McCartney concert.

“It’s beautiful, we love it,” the Beatle said as cameras flashed the sign to the 12,000-plus folks filling Spokane Arena. “But it’s slightly obsessive.”

McCartney’s deadpan humor didn’t disappear during his time off the road, nor did his ability to craft a stunning, nearly three-hour set that somehow manages to thrill the Beatlemaniacs, give proper due to his too-often-neglected Wings work, and slip in a few surprises and new songs as well.

Even so, with a catalog as stacked as McCartney’s, it’s impossible to include every “Jet,” “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and “A Hard Day’s Night” when you want to showcase tunes from your most recent albums. “Women and Wives” from 2020’s McCartney III made its live debut, and he played two songs from 2018’s Egypt Station (“Fuh You” and “Come On To Me”).

The kickoff of the “Got Back Tour” was an unusually intimate affair for a McCartney roadtrip. Spokane Arena, tucked in a small city in Eastern Washington, is by far the smallest venue he’ll play on his “Got Back Tour,” a jaunt that includes shows at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Fenway Park in Boston and Met Life Stadium in New Jersey (get tickets here ).

The chance to see McCartney this up close and personal made for a crowd that seemed — judging by McCartney’s own informal poll from the stage — split nearly equally between locals and people who’d traveled to catch McCartney’s first concert of 2022.

McCartney hit the stage in his typical casual jeans-and-blazer combo, joined by his long-time band to tear into “Can’t Buy Me Love,” followed quickly by Wings’ “Junior’s Farm” and “Letting Go.”

While McCartney opened the show playing his iconic Hofner bass at center stage, throughout the show he would bounce between myriad instruments — pianos, naturally, for songs like “Hey Jude,” “My Valentine” and “Maybe I’m Amazed,” but also electric guitar and mandolin. At one point, he brought out a ukulele he explained was a gift from George Harrison before paying tribute to his former bandmate with a cover of Harrison’s “Something” that evolved from simple acoustic strumming into a powerful, fully electrified wonder.

Someone like McCartney doesn’t need any additional hype to pack his concerts, given the generations of fans on hand thrilled to be experiencing just a taste of Beatlemania in person. But the pandemic pause that pushed McCartney off the road in 2019 and forced the cancellation of a planned lengthy 2020 tour added to the excitement of his return to the live stage Thursday.

And Peter Jackson’s 2021 The Beatles: Get Back documentary remarkably managed to raise McCartney’s profile to new heights as both casual fans and Beatles fanatics got a new glimpse into just what a driving, creative force he was in the context of the Fab Four. Among four unquestionable geniuses, the youthful McCartney (just 26 during the recording of Let It Be documented in Jackson’s film) clearly was the leader of the pack.

McCartney made mention of Jackson’s film more than once Thursday night, incorporating several clips into his splashy video display that engulfed the rear of the stage. The “Got Back” tour moniker is an obvious nod to the film, but its presence was felt most dramatically when McCartney returned to stage for his encore (carrying a Ukrainian flag in a nod to the world outside the arena) and said, “You want some more? We have something special for you.”

With that, McCartney duetted with John Lennon on “I’ve Got A Feeling,” using audio culled from the famous rooftop concert, the Beatles’ last public performance together. The vision of a grinning Lennon filled the screens above McCartney as the duo traded verses in what was easily one of the most stirring performances of the night.

The youthful McCartney on display via video was a stark contrast to the real-life McCartney on stage, at least physically. Still remarkably energetic and spry as he readies to turn 80 in June, McCartney’s age is showing in his face, a somewhat jarring juxtaposition if the last time you saw him was in the Get Back doc. His voice, though, remains in fine form, holding up remarkably well over a three-hour set even if his distinct screams aren’t quite as vivid as they used to be.

While much of the setlist echoed those songs played on his “Freshen Up Tour” in 2019, there were some noteworthy additions. “Getting Better” found its way into a show for the first time since 2003, as did “You Never Give Me Your Money” as part of an Abbey Road medley, which also included “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” making its first appearance in a McCartney set since 2008.

McCartney’s band is incredible, as you’d expect, and has been with him since 2002. Abe Laboriel, Jr., is a powerhouse drummer, Rusty Anderson rips off concise, searing solos, Brian Ray deftly shifts between guitar and bass depending on what McCartney’s up to, and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Wix Wickens fleshes out everything from the simplest early tunes (“Birthday,” “Love Me Do”) to more ornate fare (“Live and Let Die,” the show-closing “The End”) with style.

Julian Lennon on Covering “Imagine” For the First Time in Support of Ukraine: It Was ‘The Right Occasion”

McCartney is once again packing the three-piece Hot City Horns on the “Got Back Tour,” and their inclusion on several songs, particularly Wings’ “1985,” and the Beatles’ “Lady Madonna,” gave those songs added life.

McCartney’s spirits were high, but no match for an audience who relished his requests to “give us a Beatles scream” or who laughed and cheered when asked, “Let’s hear it for grandparents!” He remarked on how thankful he was to be able to play “back together, in the same room.”

But the most poignant moment of the night came as McCartney introduced “Here Today,” a song he wrote for Lennon shortly after his friend’s murder — a song he said expressed the love he had for Lennon, but didn’t express before his was lost.

“If there’s someone you want to say it to, get it said!” McCartney declared. Words to live by, no matter your age.

Paul McCartney next plays Seattle, WA at Climate Pledge Arena on Monday, May 2nd. Tickets for that gig, and for the rest of the tour, are available via Ticketmaster .

McCartney Opens 2022 ‘Got Back’ Tour With Lennon ‘Duet’

paul mccartney tour opening act

Paul McCartney (with John Lennon) performing “I’ve Got a Feeling,” Spokane Arena, April 28, 2022

Paul McCartney began his long-awaited return to the concert stage on April 28, 2022 in Spokane, Wash., with the first performance of his “Got Back” tour. The 36-song set featured Beatles, Wings and solo hits, and one very memorable feature that was added for this tour. (See the setlist and watch many of the performances below.) The legend would turn 80 that June 18.

The show was McCartney’s first concert in nearly three years, when he completed the final date of his “Freshen Up” tour on a memorable evening on July 13, 2019, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The set at Spokane Arena on opening night mirrored the one used during his last tour, “Freshen Up,” with some notable substitutions.

Opening night began with an early Beatles favorite.

Noticeably missing was the opening number, The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night,” which McCartney had refreshingly added to the setlist some years ago. Added were such favorites as “Getting Better,” and two songs from Abbey Road ‘s side two: “You Never Give Me Your Money” and “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window.” (“Eleanor Rigby” was also dropped from the list.)

Watch McCartney perform “Getting Better”

Watch a pair of  Abbey Road favorites

Naturally, “Get Back” was re-added. For this tour, McCartney is showing footage from the acclaimed 2021 Peter Jackson docu-series of the same name. On “Get Back,” McCartney showed his Beatles bandmates performing the song on the large screen behind the stage, as he sang along with John Lennon from the film.

When he made the tour announcement, McCartney wrote, “I said at the end of the last tour that I’d see you next time. I said I was going to get back to you. Well, I got back!”

The U.S. itinerary, announced on Feb. 18 began in the west and ended in the east, a little over a week before the Glastonbury Festival. He had previously played the festival in 2004.

Watch him perform “Band on the Run” on opening night

He kept active during the Covid-19 pandemic with a best-selling book, The Lyrics , as well as another children’s book. He also released a new solo album, McCartney III , in December 2020. His “1969 self” had been highly visible with the Nov. 2021 release of The Beatles: Get Back , Peter Jackson’s docu-series of the filming of the band’s recording sessions and legendary performance on the rooftop of their Apple Corps Ltd. building in London.

McCartney’s longtime touring band features guitarist Rusty Anderson, drummer Abe Laboriel Jr, keyboardist Paul “Wix” Wickens and guitarist Brian Ray.

When McCartney returned to the stage following a short break after the main set, he did so waving a Ukrainian flag, as the crowd roared. “You want some more?” he asked rhetorically.

He kicked off the encores with “I’ve Got a Feeling,” with a special duet with Lennon that McCartney integrated for the entire tour.

Watch a portion of the opening night encore, “I’ve Got a Feeling”

Here’s the complete clip of the “I’ve Got a Feeling” performance. The footage with Lennon from the  Get Back docu-series begins at around the 3:48 mark.

More clips are below the setlist.

Paul McCartney Got Back tour at MetLife Stadium: Everything you need to know

paul mccartney tour opening act

Spoiler alert for Beatles fans: Paul McCartney is performing a special virtual duet on his Got Back tour, which comes to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Thursday, June 16,

A video, with vocals, of the late John Lennon is shown during the Beatles classic “I’ve Got a Feeling.” The footage comes from Peter Jackson’s “The Beatles: Get Back” documentary, which was originally filmed for the Fab Four's “Let It Be” movie in January of 1969.

Lennon was 29 years old.

“We got something here that's very special for me,” said McCartney during the performance in Oakland, Calif.

The Got Back shows, which are running about 2½ hours, are chock full of Beatles, Wings and McCartney classics. The tour-closing MetLife concert comes two days before McCartney's 80th birthday.

What are there chances of “Birthday” being performed at MetLife? Pretty good — the classic has been played on every tour show, according to setlist.fm .

Sir Paul McCartney MBE is an English musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century.

He was part of perhaps the most famous British band of the 20th century, The Beatles who are regarded as one of the most popular and influential acts in the history of rock music and his songwriting partnership with John Lennon is one of the greatest of all time. McCartney has been recognised as one of the most successful performers of all time collating 60 gold discs and sales of over 100 million albums and 100 million singles of his work with the Beatles and as a solo artist.

In 1999 he received the honour of being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist due to the fact that he has written, or co-written 32 songs that have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2014 he has sold more than 15.5 million RIAA-certified units in the United States. McCartney, Lennon, Harrison and Starr received MBEs in 1965, and in 1997, McCartney was knighted for his services to music. He performed at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games and is seen as ambassador of British music.

McCartney first met Lennon at a church fete in 1967 where he was performing with his current band The Quarrymen, little did they know they would form such a close working relationship and would eventually become the most successful recording band in history. Cited as the driving force behind the first ever rock concept album, 'St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club', McCartney kept creativity at the forefront of everything he did.

He currently holds an honorary doctorate degree from Yale Music, a Brit Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Music, twenty-one Grammy Awards and a knighthood. The tireless musician is still touring to this day and shows no sign of slowing.

Live reviews

The Paul McCartney concert on October 30, 2014 in Greensboro, NC was far and away the best concert I have been to and I have been to many. To see this music legend alone is amazing but to see him and his band, not missing a beat the entire evening, goes beyond amazing. McCartney's voice gave just a little a couple of times but his enery and showmanship was spot on, and and other than those one or two times, his voice was as rich as ever. Make no mistake, the tickets were expensive but you get every penny's worth of your money back in the show you get. He started late, about 45 minutes or so, but then played for almost 3 straight hours and did 2 extended encores. Just amazing. I saw BB King not too long ago and he played about the length of one of McCartney's encores and just droned on and on for the rest of the hour long show, telling stories that I guess he found entertaining but no one else did, as evidenced by a few boo's. Sad and a waste of good money. Don't get me wrong-I still love BB King but it was a sad waste of time and money that night. You will not have any waste seeing Paul McCartney. His renditions of the old Beatles songs were a delightful step back in time, his Wings songs as tight as ever and it all just got better and better. The lighting and background effects on a large wall of lights produced beautiful effects that went from psychadelic to photo's of children, the Beatels, buildings and more. Standing alone and playing an acoustic guitar on a large block that rose about 20 feet above the stage was fantastic, with a full moon, leafless tree and midnight blue sky behind him. And then a large blue rose forming on the front of the block just set the mood for his excellent guitarwork and vocals. When the show ends with Live and Let Die, they pyrotechnics were amazing. The roar of about 16,000 fans combined with fireworks and blasts of flames in perfect unison was the way to hit a finale. And the 2 encores were a perfect end to a perfect night. If you get a chance to see Paul McCarney, go-just go! Worth the money and then some!

PAUL MCCARTNEY is Out There playing for 3 hours. Yes, that is right! Pauly rocked the sold out show for 3 hours. This is the third time I have had the pleasure of seeing him and have seen many other bands but this was the best show I have ever seen. Not only did he rock out with fab Beatle songs like "Helter Skelter" but he also slowed it down with songs like "The Long And Winding Road". He treated us to some great Wings surprises like "Hi Hi Hi" and "Listen To What The Man Said". He also played some great songs from his latest album "New". I have his concert DVD's and he added many different songs to the mix while still keeping in some of the hoped for favorites.

I don't want to give anything away but there are some awesome surprises music wise awaiting the lucky person who will attend one of his shows.

This is a must see show, the material spanned his entire career. He sounded fantastic and he looks great! To all the ladies out there, you will still swoon when you see him! I did! He was funny and charming. One of the most refreshing things was that you could tell he was having an awesome time and you felt like he wanted to stay and play longer as much as you wanted him to stay and play longer! He really shows his fans that he cares about us as much as we care about him.

A very cool and unexpected event: He brought a couple up onstage who had a sign stating that he was ordained and would he marry them. He did a short little ceremony for them stating that it really wasn't legal but it was awesome! I totally wanted to grab the guy next to me (who I didn't know) and yell "We're next!"

I really think this is a show for anyone who really loves music. Paul was changing his guitar's and bass's out even playing one of his original guitars that he used for Sgt.Peppers. Throwing in an awesome tribute to Jimi Hendrix. Go see him if you get the chance. I would go again tonight if I could!

Beatles legend and Wings mainman, Paul McCartney will remain indelibly etched into the annals of time. The humanitarian, bassist and vocalist has traversed six decades, performing in some of the world's biggest and best venues, at historic moments (Band Aid), and unique moments (who ever pegged Macca as a Nirvana member?!), McCartney is a one-of-a-kind performer, fully deserving his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 72-year-old Liverpudlian is entirely at ease on stage – he's essentially lived there for the best portion of his life – his catalogue is studded with megaton hits. Bond theme “Live And Let Die” (replete with flamethrowers when performed at festivals), Stevie Wonder duet “Ebony and Ivory”, “Coming Up” and “Jet” are non-Beatles bangers, but he frequently performs legendary cuts like “Let It Be”, “Back In The USSR” and “Hey Jude” at the end of his sets. How thoroughly immense is it watching a genuine Beatle lead a rousing chorus of “Naa naa naa nanananaaaaa?" Though arguably not as elastic as he once was – don't expect too many backflips – he's still a consummate entertainer. His voice has aged, but he still smashes every note, and his fretwork's not diminished a smidgen. It's rare you get to see a legend in the flesh, but grab any chance to witness McCartney, and you'll not regret it.

Paul McCartney. Just let the legend of that name sink in.

I can honestly, without a doubt say that this was the best concert/show I have ever been to (and I have been to numerous concerts).

Not only did he perform his New songs, but he performed all of his hits from The Beatles to The Wings as well. And I am sure he barely hit the top of the iceberg with what he performed considering his incredible library of number 1s and hundreds upon hundreds of songs.

This 72 year old man performed a 3 hour nonstop performance in clouding pyrotechnics, memoriams to his late and great Beatle counterparts, and 3 encores without breaking a sweat.

He may not be able to hold his notes as long as he did when he was younger but he still sounded amazing nonetheless. I was blown away and so happy that I can tell my kids when I am older that I saw one of The Beatles and it was perfect.

I don't think I have ever recommended a concert as highly as I am for Sir Paul. He is a living legend and am honored to have seen him rocking, running all over the place and putting on a great performance at the age of 72.

YOU MUST GO SEE HIM LIVE. It's an experience well worth the money and his tickets start at 25 for far seats but even so, WORTH IT.

BEST CONCERT OF MY LIFE!! I can say Even one of the most incredible moments of my life. I know what it means being able to see the legend Sir Paul McCartney live and he fullfill all my expectations and way more! His band is absolutely amazing!

But let me tell you the highlight of my year:

I could only afford the cheapest level tickets but I was more than ok with that since i was going to see my idol, then on my way to our seats with my 2 girlfriends, an angel waiting at the top of the stairs ask us to see our tickets and then offer to change them, we were surprised and maybe thinking it was a scam but then she pulled her envelope with 3 FIRST ROW TICKETS!! Best seat in the arena, she identify herself as part of Sir Paul team, and after many thank yous and hugs we went to see the biggest concert.

Thats why he is the absolutely GREATEST rock star of this planet! Beacuse he truly cares about his audiences, i will never in my wildest dreams tought i was going to see able to be on the first row, besides the wonderful drama of the situation his performance was perfect, spotless, he is full of energy and will be forever grateful to him for such an amazing night.

Sir Paul McCartney concert in Munchen was fabulous (Fab four, Fab one :)). The Olympiastadion was full of happy delighted people who were lucky enough to get a ticket. There were Beatles fans along with Wings and Macca fans from many different countries, young and not so young people, all cheerfully singing the everlasting songs and dancing to our beloved music that defined the lives of many of us. The show went on for full 2 hours and 40 minutes, almost 40 songs from all periods, from late 50's to nowadays hits.

For me, it was a once in a lifetime event. I grew up with Beatles and Paul McCartney music, and I have been waiting for a long time for this. It's been a long time since I bought my first Beatles record, even long time since I bought my last one (not to mention I have all Beatles records plus many of their solo albums :)), and the possibility to see one of my heroes live in concert, it was just a dream come true.

It was worth every single penny spent on concert ticket, air ticket, airport transfers, accomodation for couple of days, and of course whole lotta german beer :)

Long live Sir Paul, long live Beatles, forever live their eternal music!

This is the second time I've seen Paul McCartney in the past few years, and yet again he did NOT disappoint. First of all, he played almost 3 hours both times, so you will get plenty of bang for your buck based on the duration of his show alone. Secondly, considering he is 72 years old, he still nails most of the hard notes and delivers a true, genuine performance while frequently interacting with the audience in between songs. Paul is a very personable character that makes the fans feel appreciated and loved as much as we love him. His show started with a few songs that would be recognizable to the casual fan, it delved off into some less "commonly" known songs and a couple cuts from his new album (which also sounded great), then he closed out the show with MANY huge hits and sing-alongs that definitely left the audience wanting more! The pyrotechnics that kicked in during Live and Let Die were unexpected and amazing! I think he also did three encores as well, and I would definitely return to watch any future shows he does in Kansas City!

aronktaylor’s profile image

I don't need to say how amazing this man is and how happy I am to have attended this show. On "Live and let die" there was even pyrotechnics and fireworks. Paul was telling us stories, singing and joking, I think he switched more than 5 guitars during the show and the evening was just overall beautiful.

The venue was terrible, though.. There was no warning about not bringing the bags and we had to pay 15 Euros to leave the bag before getting in - backpacks were not allowed at all (so they basically forced us to give this money as it was too late to go back to hotel and leave it there). Also the security check was useless.. We were drinking in line to warm up and forgot about empty bottle in the pocket.. Guess what? We were able to bring a GLASS BOTTLE through security check, cause we didn't remember and they never checked.. What if I was a psycho? It's glass after all.

As soon as the legend, Sir Paul McCartney himself took the stage, the magic began! He performed for three solid hours, entertaining the crowd with songs written with the Beatles, with Wings, and on his own. I got teary-eyed when he first came into view, as you don't expect to see a legend, at 72 years old, still performing at the top of his game! Paul McCartney still LOVES what he does! Financially, he doesn't need to perform. He does it because he loves to and because he still can, which is impressive! This concert shall be one of my favorites for a long time - and I've attend many concerts in my lifetime. He came out and did two encores, even running around the stage. He never sat down unless poised at the piano. A legend, a master, a must-see!

Paul McCartney Kicks Off New Tour and Rocks Phoenix

Contributor

Paul McCartney doesn't know how to act his age.

Now 67 years old, the legendary rock star turned back the clock Sunday night, and fans in Glendale, Arizona were treated to three thrilling hours of some of the greatest rock and roll of all time, with no opening act and no breaks.

McCartney kicked off what he called a "mini-tour" with a rolicking and energetic concert before a huge and enthusiastic audience. He knew what they wanted to hear, and delivered with charm and an easy smile. Fans of early Beatles got "Day Tripper," "All My Loving," "I'm Looking Through You." Fans of classic Beatles got the greatest hits: "Hey Jude," "Eleanor Rigby," "Get Back," "Lady Madonna." And every fan got a rock and roll thrill of a lifetime when McCartney played a song never before performed on American soil; with a grin, Paul said coyly, "I think you're gonna like it," before launching into the opening chords of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". Not wanting to disappoint, McCartney also gave Wings fans a full compliment of hits, including a soulful "Let Me Roll It' and another never before performed song, "Nineteen Hundred and Eight Five" from Band on the Run .

Some of the evening's most memorable moments were studies in contrast. Some were quiet, as when, alone on the stage, McCartney offered up a beautifully lyrical "Blackbird." Later in the set, a backdrop of stunning photos of the Sonoran Desert (where he and his late wife Linda lived for many years) lent a sense of poignancy to a bittersweet version of "Long and Winding Road." He could have easily lingered on the quiet side and few would have faulted him, but Paul's still the wild boy from The Cavern Club and he wanted to rock: a sweet ukelele version of "Something" transitioned into a full-throttled showstopper that had the audience on its feet. After cranking up the volume with "Back in the USSR" McCartney threw himself into an edgy version of "I've Got a Feeling." Even at the end of a show that would have exhausted a performer half his age, McCartney was still rocking, following up his signature Beatle song, "Yesterday" with a ripping "Helter Skelter"...as part of his second encore.

Through it all McCartney never seemed to weary. And while his voice no longer rings with the crystal purity it had when he was twenty, he still touched the high notes on "Every Night" with as much ease as he growled out the opening of "Lady Madonna."

Toward the end of the show McCartney caught a small stuffed animal, a pink bunny, tossed by a member of the audience; he wore the bunny on his back for the encore (making sure to turn around so the happy fan could see). The little gift might have been an Easter gift, or it might have been an Energizer Bunny. If the latter, it had nothing on Paul McCartney. The legendary performer proved once again that he doesn't just keep going and going. He's still getting better all the time.

Watch Paul McCartney, the Eagles Perform ‘Let It Be’ at Jimmy Buffett Tribute Concert

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Paul McCartney celebrated Jimmy Buffett during a tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl last night, sharing memories of the musician and performing the Beatles ‘ “Let It Be” with the Eagles.

“I had the great pleasure of knowing Jimmy,” McCartney told the audience. “And like everyone else on the bill tonight has said, this is one great man. He was generous, he was funny, he’d done just about everything in his life.”

He added, “I was on holiday with him and I forgot to bring my guitar, so he had his own guitar strung left-handed for me. And then the next time I saw him he’d had one custom made left-handed for me.”

He explained that he sang several songs for Buffett during the last week of his life and wanted to perform one of them for the concert. McCartney, who was introduced by Dave Grohl , showcased the 1970 song at a grand piano while backed by the Eagles.

Elsewhere during the tribute concert, Coral Reefer Band, Brown, and Grohl teamed up for a cover of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” while Sheryl Crow showcased “Fins.”

Snoop Dogg also appeared onstage, performing his song “Gin and Juice” for the audience.

Buffett died on Sept. 1, 2023, at the age of 76. At the time, McCartney wrote , “He had a most amazing lust for life and a beautiful sense of humour. When we swapped tales about the past his were so exotic and lush and involved sailing trips and surfing and so many exciting stories that it was hard for me to keep up with him. Right up to the last minute his eyes still twinkled with a humour that said, ‘I love this world and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it’.  So many of us will miss Jimmy and his tremendous personality. His love for us all, and for mankind as a whole.”

Rarely in the Hollywood Bowl’s 100-plus years has the storied venue hosted the sheer star wattage from different fields that filled its stage Thursday night, April 11.

The occasion was Keep the Party Going: A Tribute to Jimmy Buffett, a chance for the late singer’s friends in the music and movie worlds (plus a couple of Hall of Fame athletes) to show their love for the tropical troubadour, who died last year of skin cancer at 76. It was the kind of night where you see and hear things you don’t usually see or hear.

“I want to set the record straight — I was the one who smoked a bowl with Jimmy on the roof of the Vatican,” actress Jane Fonda told the sold-out crowd, jokingly correcting a tall tale Woody Harrelson had spun earlier. Tennis legend John McEnroe kept the gag going later by claiming he and Buffett had sparked up on Wimbledon’s Centre Court.

While tales of the Pirate Laureate’s prodigious partying — both real and embellished — were a regular source of laugh lines, the evening’s emotional touchstone was Buffett’s humanity and generosity of spirit.

“Jimmy Buffett was a cool guy,” actor Harrison Ford said. “There will never be another like Jimmy. Usually, cool guys aren’t that nice. Jimmy was more than nice. He was kind.”

Jon Bon Jovi compared the life lessons he learned from Buffett to being “at the knee of the Jedi.” Added pro surfer Kelly Slater: “He was keenly aware that life is fleeting and we have to make memories while we’re here.”

Paul McCartney, the night’s final individual performer, summed it up this way: “Like everyone else on the bill has said, this was a great man.”

The night was also a celebration of the bond between Buffett and his legions of festively festooned fans, affectionately known as “Parrot Heads,” forged over countless bacchanalian summer tours. “Jimmy liked it best when everybody had a good time,” James Taylor told the crowd in a video he sent from Perth, Australia. “That was his gift.”

But what about the music, you ask? Stunning. Highlight followed highlight over nearly three and a half hours. Again, things you don’t normally see or hear.

  • Brandi Carlile pouring her full passion into “Tin Cup Chalice” and “Come Monday,” two of Buffett’s most introspective ballads.
  • Jackson Browne delivering a tender reading of “He Went to Paris,” which actor Will Arnett introduced as “Bob Dylan’s favorite Jimmy Buffett song.”
  • Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro shredding through a medley of “We Will Rock You” and “My Guitar Gently Weeps,” using distortion and delay to great effect.
  • Dave Grohl climbing behind the drum kit to power a Zac Brown-led version of Van Morrison’s “Brown-Eyed Girl,” a staple cover in Buffett’s set lists.
  • Snoop Dogg getting a largely AARP-aged audience on its feet and singing along with “Gin & Juice.”
  • McCartney teaming up with the Eagles for an elegiac version of “Let It Be,” a song the Beatle said he personally sang to Buffett days before his death.

Those weren’t the only strong turns. Kenny Chesney, whose “no shoes” vibe is a direct descendent of Buffett’s Caribbean country style, tore through “Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude.” Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit — credited with coining the term “Parrot Head” during his stint with Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band — did a cheeky rendition of “Volcano,” changing a lyric to add political commentary. J.D. Souther’s scorching take on “Southern Cross” had the entire venue standing.

Sheryl Crow, who was a back-up singer for Buffett early in her career, had fun with “Fins,” leading fans in the well-known choreography.

Through it all, the Coral Reefer Band provided tight backing, playing with purpose. The band’s singer-guitarist Mac McAnally served as the evening’s amiable MC and kicked things off by singing “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.”

The show cooked along through most of its first three hours until the Coral Reefer Band left the stage. After a video played of an absent Dave Matthews singing “Lonely Cruise,” the Eagles came on to do “Boys of Summer,” “Take It to the Limit” and “In the City” — a polished performance that seemed disconnected from the rest of the show and its intent. The transition time to set up for the Eagles’ mini-set also sapped the night’s brisk pace.

The tribute ended with the expected group sing-along of the Parrot Heads’ national anthem,”Margaritaville,” which sent fans out in an upbeat spirit.

Earlier in the show, before he sang “Son of a Son of a Sailor,” country singer Eric Church recalled a conversation with Buffett where the topic turned to mortality and legacy.

“He said, ‘You know, Eric, guys like us never really die. Because the songs live forever.’”

‘The Outsiders’ Review: Broadway Musical Packs Heart and Soul but Little Punch

The Outsiders review Broadway musical

Tough guys with a soft side have long held a firm grip on the American imagination. S.E. Hinton’s novel “ The Outsiders ,” about a cadre of down-and-out boys, has been read by millions of restless adolescents since it was published in 1967, when the author herself was a teenager. Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film , stacked with before-they-were-A-list hunks including Rob Lowe and Matt Dillon, ushered in the Brat Pack era of moviemaking that paid serious attention to young people and their discontents.

Popular on Variety

That would be underselling the considerable achievements of the creative team, artfully led by director Danya Taymor , that bolster the production with seductive aesthetic flourishes. It’s to their credit that “The Outsiders” at least lends a distinct flavor to its many recycled elements.

There’s a baleful, country sound to the score, by the folk duo Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Levine (who is also credited with music supervision, orchestration and arrangements) suited to the Oklahoma setting and an aching desire to escape it. Nearly the whole first act is dedicated to numbers hammering that desire home, including the song “Great Expectations,” named for Dickens’ novel, which replaces “Gone With the Wind” as the literary reference in Ponyboy’s pocket. (Rapp also makes him the brains of the family.)

After an opening number that accomplishes lots of heavy lifting — establishing time and place (“Tulsa 1967”) and primary conflict (between disadvantaged “greasers” and monied “socs,” or socialites) — a wistful sense of resignation (“that’s probably how it’s always gonna go”) becomes the dominant theme. That ennui weighs on the show like a lead blanket despite a back-loaded proliferation of twists, including a deadly stabbing and the rescue of children from a church fire. Even as life takes irrevocable turns, Ponyboy still feels trapped, which makes narrative sense but proves difficult to dramatize.

The raw-wood set, dominated by a barn-like wall, seems intended to reflect that imprisonment (it’s by the design collective AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian) and serves as a muted canvas for more notable effects. A high-pitched ringing brings the audience inside Ponyboy’s skull when he is knocked unconscious by a haughty rival (sound is by Cody Spencer). And that climactic fight is set in a thunderstorm and choreographed, by Rick and Jeff Kuperman, like an erotic music video (a conceit also seen in the most recent Broadway staging of “ West Side Story ”).

Considering the songwriters turn “Tulsa 1967” into a recurring refrain, and that a notorious massacre devastated the city’s Black neighborhood not 50 years earlier, the production smartly does not ignore race among its social divisions. In this version of the story, mentor and ex-con Dally (Joshua Boone) teaches Johnny (Sky Lakota-Lynch) to defend himself, a fatal bit of hard-won wisdom that leads to their tragic outcomes. Both actors deliver late-stage numbers that are among the score’s high points.

But a puttering feeling pervades even these climactic moments. The infatuation between Ponyboy and Cherry (Emma Pittman), which produces a couple of serviceable duets, feels perfunctory and fades into a melange of other conflicts. Hinton’s novel gallops with the muscular first-person voice of a tortured narrator, grabbing readers by the collar. “The Outsiders” musical takes a milder approach, peering under the hood of masculinity to the tune and pace of indie emo.

Paul McCartney toasts Jimmy Buffett with margarita at tribute concert with all-star lineup

L OS ANGELES − In a night filled with wildly eclectic musicians honoring Jimmy Buffett at the Hollywood Bowl Thursday, Paul McCartney captured the range of the "Margaritaville" bard's impossibly wide web of global friendships and joy of living.

Entering the stage late in the "Keep The Party Going" tribute concert, McCartney, 81, spoke about being invited to Buffett's home a week before the party-loving singer/songwriter died of skin cancer in September at age 76.

"He was in a pretty bad way, but he still had a twinkle in his eye," said McCartney, who sat behind the piano to perform the song he had played for his dying friend − the classic ballad "Let It Be." In Thursday's performance, McCartney jammed along with the Eagles and Don Henley .

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

For the next and final song, McCartney joined music stars − as diverse as Sheryl Crow and Pitbull − for Buffett's signature "Margaritaville," with Sir Paul proudly hoisting a Las Vegas-sized margarita onstage.

"This is a man with a margarita right here," said Mac McAnally, the longtime guitarist from Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, who served as "musical captain" for the evening.

Here's who else kept the Buffett party going in the star-studded concert attended by fans including Al Pacino, Courteney Cox, Larry David and Sean Penn.

Honorary Coral Reefer Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile rocked

Crow said she was "an absolute nobody" when Buffett hired her in 1989 to join his Coral Reefer Band.

"I know Jimmy is laughing his ass off," the singer said before breaking into "Fins."

"I need to see some fins!" Crow said, instructing the crowd to put up their “land shark” fins during the song. There were fins on stage, fins to the left and fins to the right.

Carlile spoke of bonding with Buffett over their mutual love of fishing ("that was our language") before belting soulful versions of two classics, "Tin Cup Chalice" and "Come Monday."

Snoop Dogg blows smoke at 'My main man Jimmy B' with 'Doggystyle' classic

Stage presenter Judd Apatow thought it might have been the suspicious smoking going on backstage that was making him hallucinate what he had seen on stage.

"I swear to God I just saw Snoop Dogg sing 'Gin and Juice' with the Coral Reefer Band," Apatow said.

It's true. The rapper and Buffett friend Snoop Dogg performed the classic song from his 1993 "Doggystyle" album in tribute to "my main man Jimmy B," singing the familiar words with the audience in between onstage puffs.

"Last time I saw you we smoked like there was no tomorrow," Snoop Dogg said from the stage before clearing out, leaving a cloud of smoke.

During the wide-ranging musical section that followed, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro wowed with a solo version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and rapper Pitbull performed his classic "Don't Stop the Party" with four backup dancers.

"He’s the definition of what it means to unite, not divide," Pitbull said of his friend before belting the song he wrote, "Thank God & Jimmy Buffett," along with Jon Bon Jovi.

"He gave me fashion advice and hair tips," Bon Jovi said. “We all think we’re rock stars, but he flew his own plane to his own show. That’s a rock star.”

Harrison Ford revealed his ear-piercing origin story courtesy of Jimmy Buffett

Friends who were not able to make the concert paid tribute over video, including Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, James Taylor and surfer Kelly Slater. NBA coaching legend Pat Riley laughingly recalled when Buffett was ejected from a Miami Heat game for calling a referee "a Parrothead."

Many friends spoke in person from the stage, including tennis legend John McEnroe, who talked about Buffett watching him play during his hotheaded prime.

"He told me, 'Relax, man,'" McEnroe said. "Of course he was right."

Harrison Ford spoke about "long boozy lunch" with Buffett and "60 Minutes" newsman Ed Bradley.

"I saw both of them had earrings, so right after lunch I got my ear pierced," Ford said. "That's how infectious Jimmy's coolness was. Enough for a then 40-year-old man to get his ear pierced spontaneously and infectious enough to create this world around his music. There's no other way to say it, there will never be another Jimmy."

Of course, the Jimmy Buffett tribute ended with 'Margaritaville'

Naturally, the night's final song brought the entire cast onstage to sing Buffett's national anthem of "Margaritaville."

"Jimmy Buffett would get a big kick out of this deal," McAnally said as the sprawling crew of musicians, friends and Hollywood stars took spots at various microphones. It was like a superstar karaoke, with Crow, Bon Jovi and Henley sharing the microphone for one of the signature "wasted away again in Margaritaville" verses.

By the end of the song, McCartney's margarita was nearly drained. But he was in no hurry to put down the glass as he walked offstage with a smile.
