What Is Pearl Jam’s Next Tour?

After playing a handful of shows in 2023, Pearl Jam is gearing up for a proper stadium outing in 2024 in support of their new album, Dark Matter .

Pearl Jam will kick off their initial North American tour dates beginning in Vancouver on May 4th. They’ll then play additional shows along the west coast, including in Portland, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, as well as headline the BottleRock Napa and Ohana Fest .

A trip to the UK and Europe follows in June 2024, with the band then returning to the US in August for concerts in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston.

Pearl Jam are also slated to play shows in Australia and New Zealand in November.

Legends of American Rock Pearl Jam have just announced their Dark Matter World Tour set to take center stage in America, Europe, and Australia this summer and fall. Pearl Jam will start their tour in Vancouver, Canada at Rogers Arena in early May before wrapping up their run of dates at the GIANTS Stadium in Sydney, Australia.

Pearl Jam is one of the most celebrated bands in music. They’re known as the most popular rock and roll band of the 90s for a reason. They’ve got more awards than we can mention, including Grammys, MTV Video Music Awards, and American Music Awards.

La band di eddie vedder, dopo la pubblicazione del nuovo singolo, ha svelato le tappe del tour 2024.

I Pearl Jam hanno annunciato il tour mondiale 2024. Dopo la pubblicazione a sorpresa di Dark Matter , il primo singolo e title track estratto dal nuovo album in uscita il prossimo 19 aprile, la band di Eddie Vedder ha svelato finalmente le date del nuovo tour mondiale.

Il lungo tour inizierà il prossimo 4 maggio a Vancouver, nella Columbia Britannica. La band si esibirà poi in diverse città degli Stati Uniti prima di intraprendere il tour nel Regno Unito e in Europa. Dopo 4 anni di silenzio dall’ultimo disco, la band ha annunciato anche l’uscita del loro dodicesimo album, fuori ovunque il prossimo 19 aprile, dal titolo omonimo al singolo che lo anticipa: “Dark Matter” e prodotto dal produttore vincitore del Grammy Award Andrew Watt.

L’album “Dark Matter” è già disponibile in preorder sullo store di Universal Music Italia in 5 varianti: CD standard, CD Deluxe, LP standard, LP in versione esclusiva per lo store di Universal e uno speciale bundle che comprende il vinile standard e il 45 giri del singolo “Dark Matter”.

Con l’annuncio dell’album, i Pearl Jam svelano anche l’intera tracklist, composta da 11 tracce, tra cui il singolo uscito oggi “Dark Matter”. Dopo una lunga attesa la band è tornata in grande stile con un brano dalle forti sonorità rock, anticipato da un post su Instagram dedicato ai diversi commenti lasciati alla band dai fan di tutto il mondo che richiedevano a gran voce l’uscita del nuovo singolo. Il brano si apre con un giro di batteria a cui segue subito la chitarra elettrica, prima che la voce di Eddie Vedder conquisti la scena e detti l’intonazione e lo stile del brano. Secondo quanto dichiarato nelle scorse settimane il dodicesimo album della band di Seattle è stato registrato tra la casa del produttore Andrew Watt e gli  Shangri-La Studios di Rick Rubin a Malibu. Dal palco della presentazione dell'album al Trobadour di Los Angeles Eddie Vedder ha spiegato così l'approccio alla lavorazione del nuovo lavoro di studio: “ Ogni volta ti ritrovi in studio e dici: proviamoci ancora. Noi lo facciamo da trenta anni ma stavolta posso dire, senza esagerare, che questo è il nostro album migliore ”.

Secondo le prime recensioni di chi li ha visti sul palco del Troubadour , le undici canzoni sono veloci, aggressive, dinamiche, con la batteria di Matt Cameron in primo piano. “ Ha pestato come non ha mai fatto, forse perché sa che è il nostro ultimo album ” ha scherzato Eddie Vedder brindando a tequila con il pubblico, tra cui Chad Smith dei Red Hot Chili Peppers e Andrew Watt che ha prodotto l’album. Jeff Ament ha detto di essere rimasto stupito dalla “ conoscenza enciclopedica ” della musica dei Pearl Jam da parte di Andrew Watt che ha solo 32 anni ma secondo il bassista “ È una forza creativa inarrestabile ”. This year, Pearl Jam are planning to be very busy. After touring sporadically in 2023, the multi-platinum rockers are returning to the road for an extensive tour around the globe. They will be touring in support of their upcoming twelfth studio album, Dark Matter . The group released the title track on Tuesday [February 13]. Produced by GRAMMY® Award winner Andrew Watt (The Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop), the record arrives on April 19 through Monkeywrench/Republic.

This spring, the band will kick off their 2024 campaign, performing across North America, Europe, Australia, and more. On May 25, Pearl Jam will be headlining BottleRock 2024 in Napa Valley, California. A Ten Club members-only pre-sale will be held through Ticketmaster Request for eligible members. Only paid Ten Club members active as of Monday, February 12 are eligible to participate in this pre-sale. Fans can register for a chance to participate in the Dark Matter World Tour 2024 registration sale by Sunday, February 18 at 11:59 PM local time for Europe, UK, Australia and New Zealand shows and by Sunday, February 18 at 11:59 pm PT for North America shows. This will be the only way for fans to participate in the on-sale. Registration does not guarantee access to the sale.

Last August, Pearl Jam set out on a  brief run  of U.S. shows. The band performed in Chicago, Austin, and more. Their Indianapolis show was postponed, and is set to be rescheduled imminently. Frontman Eddie Vedder also played two intimate solo shows on October 23 and October 24 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, in addition to his performance at Ohana Festival on September 30.

The forthcoming Dark Matter will be available on digital download, CD, and vinyl, with several variants including a Ten Club Exclusive Red Galaxy Vinyl with 24-page booklet, Indie Exclusive Crystal Vinyl with 24-page booklet, standard black vinyl, standard CD, and Deluxe CD/Blu-Ray with HD audio and Dolby Atmos Immersive Mix. All vinyl packages include one of three uniques sticker sheets with five center label tickets, plus a logo sticker. The title track will be available on a 7-inch vinyl single.

To celebrate local record shops, Pearl Jam are releasing a special edition vinyl variant on April 20, exclusively in-store at participating Record Store Day shops.

Pearl Jam released their eleventh studio album  Gigaton  in March of 2020. It was the group’s first all-new studio outing in seven years. The critically-acclaimed album hit No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock and Alternative album charts. The band finally got out not the road to support the album in 2022.

In 2021, Pearl Jam began working on Dark Matter at Andrew Watt’s studio in Beverly Hills. With Watt at the helm, it’s safe to say that fans can expect a heavier, more guitar-driven outing, given his previous success with acts like Ozzy Osbourne and The Rolling Stones. Pearl Jam recorded a bulk of their new record at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studio in Malibu, California.

On January 31, Pearl Jam held an ultra-exclusive album reveal of Dark Matter. The event took place at the legendary Troubadour in Los Angeles, California. Band members Eddie Vedder (vocals), Mick McCready (guitar), and Jeff Ament (bass) were on hand, as well as producer Andrew Watt.

“We’re still looking for ways to communicate,” Vedder said at the event. “We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful. No hyperbole – I think this is out best work.”

Bassist Jeff Ament added, “What Ed said about getting us in a room at this point, we felt like we were about to make a really important record. A lot of that had to do with the atmosphere Andrew set up. He has encyclopedic knowledge of our history, not only as a band and how we wrote songs, but as players. He could pinpoint things we did on old songs to the point where I was like,  ‘What the fuck is he talking about?’  His excitement was contagious. He’s a force. I just want to say thanks for keeping us on track. I couldn’t be prouder of us as a band. I feel so grateful for the fans, but mostly for my brothers and these people I’ve made music with.”

Pearl Jam released a special 30th anniversary reissue of their seminal album,  Vs. , back in November. With Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, the band will commemorate three decades of the their seminal sophomore outing with releases on vinyl and cassette configurations. Pearl Jam’s own  Ten Club  featured an exclusive 2-LP Dreamsicle (translucent orange with white swirls) color variant vinyl and clear cassette. Target offersed its own 1-LP exclusive clear vinyl, an international clear vinyl, and a new black 2-LP vinyl will be available in participating retailers. Pearl Jam and Legacy Recordings also unveiled a brand new Atmos Spatial Audio Mix of the album through Apple Music alongside new visualizer videos for each track on the album.

Moving 10 million units worldwide,  Vs.  has since gone 7x Platinum in the States. Meanwhile, “Daughter” just reached RIAA Platinum status, while “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town” has gone Gold.

Last year also saw the 10th anniversary of Pearl Jam’s tenth full-length LP and fan favorite,  Lightning Bolt . It originally dropped on October 15, 2013 and became the group’s fifth No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200. The Brendan O’Brien-produced  Lightning Bolt  is now also available in Spatial Audio.

What is ticketmaster request.

Pearl Jam is using Ticketmaster Request to power this fan club presale. Ticketmaster Request is a simple way to request tickets to popular shows, so you don’t have to compete in a first-come, first-served sale. You can take your time to review the available options and request the right tickets for you. All you need to do is tell us which show(s) you’re interested in, the type of ticket you want and your payment details. If tickets that match your request are available, your card will be charged, and we’ll email you instructions on how to view them. Note: each show you are confirmed for will be charged separately by Ticketmaster; the charge will appear as Ticketmaster*Pearl Jam.

How does the Ten Club ticket request work?

Complete your request in three easy steps. First, tell us what shows and tickets you’re interested in. Then, provide a credit card to complete your ticket request. If your request is fulfilled, your card will be charged and we’ll email you a confirmation with instructions on how to view your tickets during the week of February 19. How do I unlock access to the Ten Club ticket request?

Is there a cutoff date to become a Ten Club member for the ticket request presale?

Yes. All fans must be a Ten Club paid member, current as of Monday, February 12, 2024. However, all fans can register for the chance to access the general sale on February 23 — tap here to get started.

Can I request tickets for more than one city?

Yes. By submitting a ticket request for any show, you are committing to purchase the ticket(s) should your request be fulfilled. For example, if you enter for five shows, it is possible your request can be fulfilled for all five shows in which case your credit card will immediately be charged for tickets to all five shows. However, you can only purchase up to two Ten Club tickets for each individual show. All tickets will be non-transferable in all states except where it is prohibited by law.

Can I get tickets to both shows in a city that has multiple performance dates?

Yes. For cities where there are two performance dates, you can request and may be confirmed for both shows, except in New York, where you can only be confirmed for one show.

Why can I no longer prioritize my shows?

Based on fan feedback, the prioritization tool caused confusion. Only request tickets for shows you can definitely attend.

My friend and I are both Ten Club Members. We both want to request a pair of tickets each. Can we both submit our requests using the same Ticketmaster account?

No, each member must request tickets using their own Ticketmaster account.

How will tickets be determined for Ten Club members?

To level the playing field, ticket requests are fulfilled in a randomized selection process. If selected for seated tickets, tickets will be assigned based on Ten Club seniority within the purchased price level.

Where are the tickets located?

Ten Club tickets are located in a variety of ticket types and locations. We anticipate greater demand for tickets than are tickets available. To better your chances of getting Ten Club tickets, select as many ticket options as you are willing to purchase.

What is the GA Pit or Reserved - Standing or Seating option?

Select this option if you are willing to stand in GA or sit through the show as you may be selected for either. If selected for GA standing tickets, you will receive early entry at a predetermined GA only door, at venues where early entry is permitted. If selected for Reserved Seating, your tickets will be assigned based on seniority in Ten Club.

What is the Reserved - Seating option?

In most venues, Ten Club reserved seated tickets will be available in two price levels. Reserved seated tickets are assigned to members based on seniority in the Ten Club within the purchased price level and will start closest to the stage extending back and include seats down on the arena floor. Ten Club ticketed areas will be highlighted on the seating chart during the ticket request process. Due to high demand at many of these shows, Ten Club seats can be located in some of the upper sections. Members with reserved tickets will enter the venue at the regular door time.

Why does Ten Club have seats in the upper areas?

Many venues have contractual partner programs which guarantee their subscribers access to some of the prime locations across all events in the building, including Pearl Jam shows. This is a contractual arrangement and is outside of Ten Club’s control. In some venues Ten Club must hold seats in higher sections to make up for the loss of ticket inventory in the lower areas.

What types of ADA Seating are available?

ADA seating is available through Ticketmaster Request during the seat selection process. Locations will vary by venue and are typically very limited. There is no ADA seating in the GA PIT at any of the shows.

Can I transfer or sell tickets I can’t use?

All tickets are non-transferable* and non-refundable.

Pearl Jam has asked Ticketmaster to ensure their fans have access to tickets at face value and to achieve this they have directed that tickets be restricted from transfer.* On the night of the show, all guests will be required to enter with the ticket purchaser. For fans that can’t use the tickets they have purchased, Pearl Jam and Ticketmaster will offer a Fan-to-Fan Face Value Ticket Exchange for every city beginning at a later date.*

Chicago, IL and New York, NY have laws that prohibit artists from being able to restrict the transfer of their tickets. For shows in these states, Pearl Jam strongly encourages fans to choose to only buy or sell tickets to one another on face value exchanges — including Ticketmaster’s Fan-to-Fan Face Value Exchange.

Is there a deadline to list my tickets for sale on the Face Value Exchange for Pearl Jam?

Tickets may be listed up until one hour after the event start time*. However, the sooner you can list your tickets on the Exchange the better opportunity for them to be purchased by another fan. Once it’s been an hour since the event started, any tickets that have not sold will be placed back into your account and will be available for you to use.

*Boston’s Fenway Park – Face Value Exchange will officially close 10 days prior to each event. Tickets cannot be sold or purchased on the Face Value Exchange after that time.

What happens if my tickets don’t sell for Pearl Jam?

Your tickets will remain available for purchase until one hour after the start of the event*. Once that time has passed, any tickets that have not sold will be placed back into your account and will be available for you to use.

Why are tickets non-transferable in some cities and not in others?

Local laws around resale as well as technical ticketing capabilities vary in different venues, states, and countries, therefore transferability will vary throughout the tour.

When submitting my registration, I received a six-digit authentication code from Ticketmaster. Can I use this code to purchase tickets during the sale?

No, that code was sent to you to verify your phone number at registration. It’s not a unique access code and cannot be used to purchase tickets.

Does registering mean I get a sale access code?

No. Registration does not guarantee access to the sale.

If I receive access to the sale, am I guaranteed tickets?

No. Access means you have an opportunity to join the sale where tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

What is the ticket limit?

The ticket limit for the sale is four (4) tickets per arena show and six (6) tickets per stadium show.

What is PJ Premium?

PJ Premium seats are located in a variety of preferred locations and account for approximately 10% of ticket inventory per show. They are priced at market rate to offset increased touring costs while also keeping prices low for the rest of the ticket inventory. PJ Premium tickets will be available along with regularly priced tickets during the sale.

Can I transfer my code to someone else?

No, codes are unique to the account they’re issued to and won’t work if shared.

All tickets are non-transferable (except for in Illinois and New York) and non-refundable.

How can I get the seating map in advance?

Seating options vary depending on the event or venue and in some cases may not be available until tickets go on sale. Visit the event page on Ticketmaster to learn more about seating options and maps.

How will I know if I’ve been granted access to the Registration Sale after I’ve been placed on the waitlist?

If selected, you will receive a text with a unique access code and link to the sale. Selection is random and not a measure of how big a fan anybody is. Pearl Jam’s twelfth studio album, Dark Matter, will be released on Monkeywrench Records/Republic Records on April 19, 2024. The album’s title track is available now exclusively on pearljam.com. Dark Matter was produced by GRAMMY® award winning producer Andrew Watt and is the band’s first release since Gigaton.

In 2023, the band retreated to Shangri-La Studios in Malibu where they simply plugged in and played under the watch of producer Andrew Watt. Writing and recording in a burst of inspiration, Dark Matter was born in just three weeks. As a result, Dark Matter channels the shared spirit of a group of lifelong creative confidants and brothers in one room playing as if their very lives depended on it.

The album’s packaging features light painting art by Alexandr Gnezdilov. The album cover art was crafted using a large self-made kaleidoscope. Each letter visible on the cover was individually captured and handwritten midair with a specially designed flashlight to create the pearlescent effect.

Pearl Jam Announce 2024 Global Tour

Pearl Jam  have announced 2024 tour dates.

The expansive trek will begin May 4 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The band will then make their way through several U.S. locations before taking the tour overseas to the U.K. and Europe. They'll return to the States in August, hitting major east coast cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston, followed by a run of Australian shows scheduled for November.

In regards to live performing, the last few years have been sparse for Pearl Jam. In 2023, the played just eight shows across the U.S. They've also not released a new album since 2020's Gigaton , but frontman Eddie Vedder has said the band isn't all that concerned with being top dog in the industry.

"At the risk of sounding whatever, we haven’t had an issue selling tickets over the years," he told The New York Times Magazine in 2022, shortly before releasing his third solo album, Earthling . "If there’s been ebbs and flows in the amount of people that care, we've had enough people that cared and continued to care that we haven't noticed. I don't know if that's been for better or worse. At least we're not chasing anything."

New Music Coming From Pearl Jam

Accompanying Pearl Jam on the road this year will be a brand new album, Dark Matter , which will arrive on April 19. It was produced by Andrew Watt , who's recent output includes records by Ozzy Osbourne , the Rolling Stones  and  Iggy Pop .

“It's a lot heavier than you'd expect," guitarist Mike McCready said  this year. "There's the melody and energy of the first couple of records."

Pearl jam raffling tickets to sold-out nyc show.

Pearl Jam is raffling off tickets to one of their upcoming sold-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

The grand prize winner will receive two tickets to PJ’s September 3 concert at the famed arena. Round-trip travel and a two-night hotel stay will be provided, as well.

You’ll also go home with a signed poster and vinyl copy of the new Pearl Jam album, Dark Matter .

The raffle is being run through the platform Fandiem and is open through June 26. A portion of the proceeds raised will benefit Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy Foundation charity organization.

Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard on ‘Dark Matter’ album, upcoming tour

SEATTLE — In some ways, it’s hard to believe it’s been six years since Pearl Jam last played Seattle, when their ballyhooed Home Shows drummed up more than $11 million for local homelessness organizations. Between a barrage of side projects and lead singer Eddie Vedder’s and guitarist Mike McCready’s penchants for onstage pop-ins when their rock star buddies come to town, it’s not like the guys have been laying low in their hometown.

But a full-fledged, sweaty-browed, arena-rocking Pearl Jam show (or two) in their backyard is a different animal.

The PJ machine is officially fired up, as the Seattle juggernauts release their 12th studio album, “Dark Matter,” on Friday, with a pair of local dates — their first at Climate Pledge Arena — coming May 28 and 30.

“Dark Matter” differed, at least in process, from its predecessor, 2020’s striking “Gigaton” LP. As opposed to individual members of the band — rounded out by bassist Jeff Ament, drummer Matt Cameron and guitarist Stone Gossard — coming in with near-complete demos over long gestation periods, many of the new songs were hashed out during quick-paced sessions with everyone in the same room.

“We’re all musical adventurers,” Gossard said earlier this month. “Everyone in the band wants to get into that moment of creativity and to be part of something that has that sort of magic and that feeling that transcends reality in some way.”

That all-hands, keep-it-moving approach hearkened back to the band’s early days and was largely spurred by hotshot producer (and low-key guitar hero ) Andrew Watt. Despite the 33-year-old’s pop pedigree, Watt is a not-so-secret Pearl Jam superfan who had been clamoring behind the scenes to work with the band for a while. After first making his name producing for pop A-listers like Justin Bieber and Post Malone, Watt’s become something of a whisperer to rock’s elder statesmen, working on recent albums with Ozzy Osbourne and Iggy Pop, the Rolling Stones and Vedder’s rewarding solo album, “Earthling.”

“He understands our songs from an outsider’s perspective,” Gossard said. “He knew that our early records were thrown together pretty quickly in terms of our process. There wasn’t a lot of time to think about things and I think that was part of what he fell in love with. He encouraged us to be in that same state of mind.”

Even if the guys brought in what they thought were solidified song skeletons, “everything that came in just got immediately thrown in the blender.” Parts were rearranged, keys shifted, new parts added. Nothing was too sacred. “That is a daunting process if you’re in a band because you’ve gotta be able to let your baby go,” Gossard said. “But that’s where some really magical things happen for us.”

“Dark Matter” was recorded during two stretches, the first taking place in 2021 at Watt’s studio.

“We walk into a room, here’s a guy that Ed has made a record with, but we’ve never met before, and he’s bouncing off the walls, super excited,” Gossard said. “He’s got a great little studio that the board is in the room, it’s all one room so we’re all in it together. We didn’t have any of our instruments, he just had guitars laying all over the place, and amps, and he’s like ‘Try this, try that, anything you wanna try!’ It’s a little bit ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ [laughs], he has a little bit of Willy Wonka [in him].”

Things started clicking immediately in Watt’s guitar-strewn Wonka factory, as the crew knocked out “Scared of Fear” and the swinging “React, Respond” — twin kickers that open the album — that first day. With Watt whipping up quality rough mixes on the fly, it was easy for the band to feel good about the takes and move on to the next song.

“He won our trust by having it together the first day and knowing how to get a song out of us,” Gossard said. “That set the hook for us, because we knew those songs were great. After that, we recorded another handful, but as we started to get more into the process, I think we got a little more cerebral again and [took] a little bit more time.”

After letting the first batch of songs breathe for about a year, largely due to scheduling constraints, Pearl Jam and Watt reconvened in Malibu’s Shangri-La studio last year to finish the second half of the album. On the whole, one of the strengths of “Dark Matter” lies in how the band’s individual talents and impulses — whether it’s Ament’s anxious post-punk (“React, Respond”), McCready’s fire-raining solos or Vedder’s Who-like crescendos (“Got to Give”) — shine through in a more cohesive setting.

The result is a loose, no-bull collection of songs that often fall squarely into the band’s wheelhouse — like watching ‘em crank slow-pitched baseballs over the center field wall in a home run derby. Songs like the crushable “Waiting for Stevie” — its origins tracing to when Vedder and Watt were literally waiting for Stevie Wonder to show up and record a part for Vedder’s “Earthling” album — are destined to go down live as well as a $6 value beer in the T-Mobile Park bleachers.

Here’s what else Gossard had to say about working with Watt, the Home Shows and Pearl Jam’s upcoming tour. These excerpts have been edited for length and clarity.

• On Watt’s writing contributions …

“It’s funny, but Andrew has a guitar on all the time. That’s how he works. So while we were recording, he was in there playing along and he helped write parts to songs. He helped us with sections and had great, great intuition about getting from point A to point B and [how] to build suspense — things that you learn in pop music that can help you that are basically arrangement moves of tension and release, making something pop. Those things can all be part of a rock song. But it’s [the] sounds and the attitude and the tempo that you can play with that make them sound different.”

• Reflecting on 2018’s Home Shows …

“I’m still unpacking that, honestly. I think it highlights how difficult things are to change without the right blend of partners and our intentions were to help create an opportunity to kind of build that. … But I think that we’re also human and definitely fallible. I’m not sure what we achieved, but I think at the very least we sent a signal that said it’s possible to do things on a large scale and it’s possible to be catalysts for change.

• On playing Climate Pledge Arena for the first time …

“I saw the Cure there and it sounded great. I’m barely going to concerts, but I really enjoyed that. It was a very stripped-down affair and it felt like a club show in terms of the mood and how they just jammed. So, I’m excited, it’s good. I’m excited about this record [and] the way the band is thinking about this tour and I think we’re going to be ready to come out and have a good show.”

• On recent tourmates Deep Sea Diver, the Seattle indie rock favorites opening the Climate Pledge Arena shows, and supporting Seattle bands …

“Jeff Ament is the one that fell in love with them early. They’re an amazing band live and did great opening last year. When you’re moved by music, you’re motivated to want to be around it, so I don’t know that it’s anything more than that. It’s cool to be where you’re from and to participate in your own city’s talent.”

On what keeps Pearl Jam exciting after 34 years …

“It’s still making art with your friends. That always excites me. In that collaboration and the mix of being part of something that you’re not really in control of but you know that you’re playing a role in it, that’s a fun place to play. And it’s still fun to play, like a kid.”

After selling nearly 100 million albums over the course of more than 30 years, dropping a string of generation-defining hits throughout the ‘90s and 2000s, and securing a 2017 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one could argue that Pearl Jam has pretty much done it all. But on Monday, following the release of their acclaimed new album “Dark Matter,” the legendary rockers celebrated yet another first — Pearl Jam’s debut appearance on the Howard Stern Show.

Frontman Eddie Vedder and his bandmates — lead guitarist Mike McCready, rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Matt Cameron — joined the show from their Seattle headquarters and sat with Howard for a riveting, wide-ranging, epic conversation before wowing SiriusXM listeners with a live, on-air concert. The boys discussed everything from why “Even Flow” took 100 takes to hanging out with legendary musicians like Stevie Wonder, Eddie Van Halen, Brandi Carlile, and Keith Richards. Then, they delivered a larger-than-life four-song set featuring two all-time classics and two blistering tracks off their newly released 12 th studio album, “Dark Matter.”

Pearl Jam had plenty to say about “Dark Matter,” which received rave reviews and has been described by some as the band’s return to their hard-hitting form. Howard was particularly eager to hear about the genesis of one of his favorite tracks off the album, “Waiting for Stevie,” written while Eddie and producer Andrew Watt were in the studio waiting on Stevie Wonder to pop in and lay down a harmonica track.

“If you hear that, it’s Stevie playing incredibly fast,” Vedder explained of his song “Try,” which features Wonder. “That was an incredible experience, just watching him become the music. It was like he wasn’t even there anymore as a person. He was just music, flowing through this … big chromatic [harmonica] he was playing.”

Just how late was the “Higher Ground” crooner?

“We were supposed to play at 4 p.m. and I think maybe he got there at 11 at night,” Eddie said. “But that’s okay.”

“Is it?” Howard wondered.

“Absolutely,” Vedder responded. He went on to explain that while Stevie’s late arrival inspired the music of “Waiting for Stevie,” its lyrics were only tangentially related to the “Superstition” singer. “In a way, it’s a song about being affected by music, and maybe music changing your life, and maybe leading you to your tribe,” Eddie said. “In that way it connects to Stevie because his music has that power.”

Why Eddie Didn’t Want ‘Better Man’ on ‘Vs.’

It’s no secret that when Seattle bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana hit it big in the early 1990s, the Seattle sound quickly became a pop culture behemoth. “It became a scene that was kind of picked up globally, and with the magnifying glass came the heat of the sun … and I don’t think anybody was really ready for it,” Eddie recalled of the period. “It was just a tricky time … the spotlight was kind of big and it kind of burned hot.”

When it came time to make their sophomore album —1993’s “Vs.” — that scrutiny impacted the band’s creative decisions. In addition to no longer making music videos for MTV, Eddie tried to put the nix on “Better Man,” which eventually became one of their biggest successes — all because producer Brendan O’Brien predicted it would be a hit. “We had taken away the bright light a little bit … we were trying to control our situation to one we felt was sustainable,” the frontman explained. “I think we were trying to protect the music and our band and so steering away from that stuff and trying to manicure this level of fame —that was the one thing we were conscious of when we were working,”

Perhaps influenced by the reaction of his bandmates, Eddie relented in time for it to appear on their next album, “Vitalogy.” “I remember that day because Brendan said it and I saw everyone’s heads go down in the studio,” he said.

The 100 Takes of ‘Even Flow’

“Even Flow” was the second single released off the multi-platinum album “Ten” and, while the track went to No. 3 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rocks Chart, it did take a while to get it right in the studio — about 100 takes, according to the band. “I’ll take the blame for this one,” Stone, the song’s composer, offered. “I think the main problem is that I wrote a song that the two parts kind of want to run at different tempos, so the chorus is one tempo, and the verse is another.

“It was overthinking,” the rhythm guitarist continued. “You’re working on something that you’re in love with and then you think, ‘Well, it’s not quite there yet,’ and then you look back on it and go, ‘Any one of those first five takes would have been fine.’”

The session was so arduous that when then-drummer Dave Krusen’s girlfriend was in labor at the same time, the band wanted him to keep going. “We’re giving birth now to our first record,” Eddie joked before admitting as a newbie to recording he went perhaps a little too hard on his vocals. “I was just giving it everything I had every take,” he said. “No one told me, ‘You know, you can hold back a little bit … you’ll end up singing this again.’” 

Things have since changed. “We’ve learned our lesson,” Stone told Howard. “I don’t think we’ve played anything more than three takes on the new record — you get older and wiser.”

Talkin’ About Loving Van Halen

Unsurprisingly, Pearl Jam’s two main axe men are devoted Van Halen fans. “Stone and I will talk about Van Halen all the time,” Mike admitted before recounting how excited they were every time the band came through Seattle. “It was like the summer was here.”

Van Halen’s debut came out when McCready was 12 and getting serious about his instrument — he was blown away by guitarist Eddie Van Halen. “It’s music from another planet to me,” he noted before demonstrating the album’s virtuosic “Eruption” on his 1960 Fender Stratocaster. “It didn’t really make any sense to me, but I thought it was the greatest sounding thing I ever heard … It was this high-water mark.”

In addition to seeing the band live four times over the years, Mike briefly met Eddie during the recording of Pearl Jam’s 2013 album, “Lightning Bolt.” “I said, ‘Man, I was just listening to the first record — it’s so incredible,’” the guitarist told Howard. “‘He’s like, ‘Ah, I never really liked the sound of that record.’”

Did KISS Really Threaten Pearl Jam’s Drummer With Legal Action?

Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron loved KISS as a teenager, but from what he told Howard on Monday the feeling may not have been reciprocated. “I was in a neighborhood KISS cover band when I was 13 or 14. We played local some local high schools [and] keggers,” Matt said, explaining that in 1975 he and his bandmates even got the chance to meet their idols at a soundcheck before their show in San Diego. “I brought the two guys that were in the KISS band with me … and we brought our photo album from our stupid KISS cover band,” he said, explaining he and his bandmates were even in costume as KISS at the time. “My mom made my costume … We built these rickety plywood platforms in [a] garage,” Cameron continued. “It was janky, low-rent, horrible.”

Even so, everything went fine until they posed for a picture with the Starchild, Paul Stanley. “We were sort of like, ‘Hey man, We’re in a KISS cover band! Here’s our [photo] album!’ Cut to [several] months later, we get a cease-and-desist letter from [their] management [company],” Matt recalled. “I think [it was because] we just called our band KISS. We didn’t really think ahead there. So, after that we added [‘imitation’] in parenthesis.”

Stage Fright With the Rolling Stones

Since making it big, Eddie has shared the stage with everyone from the Doors, Bruce Springsteen, and the Rolling Stones to R.E.M., Neil Young, and even Beyoncé. Howard was especially eager to hear about his Rolling Stones collaborations.

“It was an interesting experience,” Vedder said of the time he joined the Stones in concert to perform their song “Waiting on a Friend.” “I’d been hanging out with [Stones guitarist] Ronnie [Wood] all night the night before,” he explained, though he admitted even that could hardly prepare him for the experience of joining Wood, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards on stage in Oakland in front of thousands of screaming fans.

“We had practiced [‘Waiting on a Friend’] real quick before they went out,” Eddie recalled, “[But] then the song started and there was no introduction or anything. I looked at the crew guys, and I was like, ‘Should I go out?’ And they all kind of turned their head like, ‘We want nothing to do with this.’”

But Eddie needed to get out there before Mick got to the second verse, so he wrapped himself in his leather jacket like it was a suit of armor and just took the stage without ever being invited. Thankfully, his presence and performance were both well received.

After the show, Vedder chatted with Keith while the icon was winding down with celebrity friends like Hunter S. Thompson and Johnny Depp. “I said, ‘Hey, sorry, your man left me hanging a bit there,” Eddie recalled. “[Richards] said, ‘Don’t you worry about it, me boy — he’s been doing that to me for 35 years.’”

‘Scared of Fear’

When it came time to rock out the Pearl Jam headquarters, Eddie gave Howard the awesome responsibility of coming up with the band’s set list. “You’re the boss, Howard,” he laughed.

Howard is already a big “Dark Matter” fan, so he invited the band to play one of their new tracks.

Eddie opted for “Scared of Fear.” “It’s the first song off the record,” he told listeners, adding, “We haven’t played it that much, but we’ll play. Are you ready?”

Howard was indeed ready, and Pearl Jam’s high-voltage rendition did not disappoint. “Oh my God, that is just fucking great,” Howard gushed.

“Wow!” co-host Robin Quivers agreed.

The band’s second song of the morning was “Running,” a punk-adjacent ditty doubling as the second single off their new album. Pearl Jam blasted into the blistery, two-minute long track without warning, but Howard and Robin loved the energetic performance.

“Whoa, boys, this is un-fucking real!” Howard marveled. “Let’s do the whole album right now. Let’s play through the whole thing,” he laughed.

At Howard’s request, the guys then played “Daughter,” the second single off of “Vs.” As Eddie recalled, the song was originally titled “Brother,” but it reminded him of a lyric from “W.M.A.” off the same album. “As soon as I switched it to ‘Daughter’ it became a whole other story,” the singer told Howard. “It became about something I kind of saw on the street — a young girl trying to get her mom’s attention — and then it just went from there.”

Vedder then elaborated that the song was birthed in a rather interesting locale. “It started in a bathroom,” he admitted, explaining it happened when he and Gossard were sharing a Denver motel room while on tour. “We were sitting on the bathtub because it had the good acoustics.”

‘Yellow Ledbetter’

The band closed the morning out the way they often do in concert – with “Yellow Ledbetter.” A showcase for McCready’s soloing, the lead guitarist credited Stevie Ray Vaughan’s influence before explaining how he chooses which pedals to use. “It’s kind of visceral and I’m just feeling whatever’s going on in the moment,” he explained. “If I’m going to do a lead, I want to have a little bit more power … but sometimes I want a washier, weird sound and I’ll hit a flanger.”

And sometimes, his bandmates will select the pedals for him, as they demonstrated for Howard. “I’m seeing what he’s capable of,” Eddie joked.

Though the song was recorded during the “Ten” sessions, it was initially only released as a B-side to 1992’s “Jeremy.” This time, Eddie took responsibility — sort of. “It was my fault because I never finished the lyrics,” the frontman said. “I don’t think I was even given a chance to. In fact, in my memory, I was saying, ‘You know, we really need this song on the record,’ and they said, ‘No, we’ve already got the 11 and I think we’re done.’”

Pearl Jam, Neil Young with Crazy Horse to Headline 2024 Ohana Festival

Ohana Festival has revealed its 2024 artist lineup for the three-day event, which will return to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, Calif., on Sept. 27 through 29. The Eddie Vedder-founded event will include headliners Pearl Jam performing on Friday, Sept. 27, Sunday, Sept. 29, and Neil Young with Crazy Horse taking the top slot on Saturday, Sept. 28. 

Apart from Friday’s Ohana headliner, Pearl Jam, the event is also billed to feature appearances by the band Garbage, Maren Morris, Crowded House, Ryan Beatty, Dogstar, Flipturn, Gabriels, Jaime Wyatt, Linka Monja and Pillow Queens. The next day, Sept. 28 includes Young with Crazy Horse, followed by Turnpike Troubadours, Black Pumas, Jenny Lewis, Glen Hansard, Cat Powers Sings Dylan ‘66, The Moss and more. 

The final day of Ohana programming will see the return of the day one headliner, who will celebrate their 12th studio LP, the April 19 release, Dark Matter . Other festival participants slated to take the stage include Alanis Morissette, IDLES, The Breeders, Peter Cat Recording Co., Kim Gordon, La Lom, La Santa Cecelia, Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers, Bad Nerves, and John Cruz. 

The annual celebration, helmed by Vedder, was initiated in 2016 and aims to extend its offerings with adds outside of music, including The Cove, a one-of-a-kind area within the festival, representing a cross-section for art and environmentalism with an offering of curated programming on the Storytelling Stage. 

The area above taps into the festival’s intent to raise awareness about ocean and environmental issues through discussions, exhibits, and panels from world-renowned conservationists, environmentalists, researchers, and surfers. Also included is an art gallery with work curated by Charles R. Alder. 

Tickets for Ohana Festival 2024 will go on sale starting with the Ten Club Presale on April 23 at 10 am. Fans can sign up now for a presale passcode to secure a ticket to Ohana 2024 via the general presale happening this Thursday, April 25, starting at 10 am 1-Day or 3-Day, General Admission and VIP Tickets along with Ultimate VIP packages.
