Wild's matt boldy will play in canadian pro golf tour event near brainerd.
Wild forward Matt Boldy has been golfing since he was 7 years old, his dad Todd introducing Boldy and older brother Mike to the sport.
Boldy played in a few tournaments and golfed in high school his freshman and sophomore years. Even now in the summer when he's on hiatus from the hockey season, he's typically on the course four or five times a week.
But competing in PGA Tour Canada's CRMC Championship later this summer?
That'll be a first for Boldy.
"It'll be a good time," he said. "I'm excited."
A 30-goal scorer last season, his second with the Wild, Boldy accepted a sponsor's exemption to participate in the tournament, which is at Cragun's Legacy Courses on Gull Lake near Brainerd Aug. 28-Sept. 3.
His Wild teammate Ryan Hartman was initially asked if he could play but since he was unavailable, Hartman mentioned it to Boldy, who thought it could be fun. Boldy has a plus-1.5 handicap and mostly golfs at Olympic Hills Golf Club in Eden Prairie, where he's a member.
At the CRMC Championship, Boldy will be vying in a 156-player field. But the 22-year-old isn't putting any pressure on himself.
"If I go out there and shoot 100, it's not going to hurt my feelings," said Boldy, who will have Mike join him at the event.
As different as golf and hockey are, Boldy said the mental aspect of each is similar: "Get out of downs quick and keep the highs rolling," the winger explained.
And although he's competitive when he's on the course with his friends, golf is still a way for him to unwind from hockey.
"You want to win no matter what you do, but it's definitely an unplug for me," said Boldy, who signed a seven-year, $49 million contract extension with the Wild at the beginning of the year. "It's less stakes. It's out there to have fun and have a good time.
"But at the same time, when you kind of add that competitiveness element into it, it's kind of nice to keep that switch on throughout the summer even if it's not as intense."
Sarah McLellan covers the Wild and NHL. Before joining the Star Tribune in November 2017, she spent five years covering the Coyotes for The Arizona Republic.

Canada's Henderson, top-ranked Korda both one shot back in Chevron Championship
Smiths falls, ont., native rockets up leaderboard, into tie for 2nd in texas.
Social Sharing
Canada's Brooke Henderson rocketed up the leaderboard and into a tie for second, being one shot off the lead at the Chevron Championship when the third round was suspended Saturday because of lightning in The Woodlands area, in Texas.
The of Smiths Falls, Ont., native, who was at 2-under 142 through two rounds, shot an 8-under 59 through 17 holes on Saturday. The 26-year-old Henderson is tied with American Nelly Korda, both behind leader Atthaya Thitikul of Thailand.
Play at Carlton Woods was halted just before 3 p.m. and called for the day 2 1/2 hours later with dangerous conditions remaining. The third round of the LPGA's first major of the season will resume Sunday morning, with the final round scheduled to commence just before 9:30 a.m.
"It was on six when I made that par save," Henderson said. "It really kept my round alive, and then from there I was able to get things going. It was really fun to kind of get on a bit of a run.
"I feel like this year I've just played pretty solid, but I haven't really seen that run and kind of had that excitement. That was really fun for me today, and hopefully just do something similar [Sunday]."
Henderson, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, had a one-putt streak of 10 with six birdies and an eagle in that stretch.
"Anytime my putter gets to working, I'm pretty happy because ball-striking is usually a strength of mine," she said. "This week I've been hitting it really well, so when I've been able to make a few putts, it feels really good, and hopefully keep it hot tomorrow."

Korda, who is trying to tie an LPGA Tour record with her fifth straight victory, was 3-under 41 through 11 holes in the third round and 10 under overall. She entered Saturday one shot off the lead after posting a 7-under 137 through the first two rounds.
The top-ranked Korda is seeking her second major after winning the Women's PGA Championship in 2021. She could join Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events.
Korda was asked about the challenges of having to finish the third round Sunday before playing the final round.

Thitikul had the lead at 11 under and was through 12 holes when play was suspended. She started the round tied with Jin Hee Im for the lead with a 136 in the first two rounds.
Thitikul, a 21-year-old from Thailand who has won twice on the LPGA Tour and missed the beginning of this season with a thumb injury, was asked about how she expects the normally firm greens to play Sunday, with rain expected to continue overnight.
"The greens are going to play a little bit easier, but the drives, other things may be harder," she said. "I don't know what it's going to be like because some holes we have the wind, and it's helped. Maybe you have a bunker on the way and then you can get over it. But if it's soft and kind of like not dry, then maybe you couldn't get over some holes."
Im was in fourth place at 9 under Saturday through 11 holes.

After being ranked in the top-five all season, North Carolina’s Austin Greaser has decided to opt-out of the PGA TOUR University Class of 2023 and use his extra year of NCAA eligibility next season. In all, four top-25 players opted out since Regionals concluded: Greaser (ranked 5th last week), Texas’ Brian Stark (9th), Vanderbilt’s William Moll (14th) and Baylor’s John Keefer (24th). These players have been removed from the PGA TOUR University Ranking and are eligible for the PGA TOUR U Class of 2024.
The removal of these players has improved the ranking of other top-25 players, led by Pepperdine’s William Mouw, who moved up one spot to No. 5. Additionally, Arizona’s Chase Sienkiewicz and NC State’s Maximilian Steinlechner effectively moved into the top 20, as Oklahoma State’s Rasmus-Neergaard Petersen (currently 13th) will drop out of the top 20 when the minimum divisor is applied after the NCAA Championship.
At the top of the ranking is Texas Tech’s Ludvig Aberg, who became just the second repeat winner of the Ben Hogan Award on Monday. He is in position to finish No. 1 in PGA TOUR University and earn PGA TOUR membership for 2023 and 2024, and he will be eligible to make his pro debut at the RBC Canadian Open (June 8-11).
After finishing runner-up at the Bath Regional, Illinois’ Adrien Dumont de Chassart improved to a season-best No. 2 in PGA TOUR University, while Florida’s Fred Biondi is No. 3 and Texas A&M’s Sam Bennett is No. 4. Overall, 17 of the top-20 players in the PGA TOUR University Ranking are on teams that qualified for the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The 72-hole, stroke play event begins Friday, May 26, and the PGA TOUR University Ranking will be finalized following the conclusion of the final round on Monday, May 29.
PGA TOUR University ranks players based on the last two years of their collegiate careers. The No. 1 player in the final PGA TOUR University Ranking will earn PGA TOUR membership, while players Nos. 1-5 (fully exempt) and Nos. 6-10 (conditional) will earn Korn Ferry Tour membership. Additionally, players finishing 6th through 20th will earn fully exempt membership on PGA TOUR Canada.
PGA TOUR University Ranking
Week 20/2023
* Did not qualify for NCAA Championship.
^ Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen has completed his season with 16 events on his PGA TOUR University record. When the minimum divisor (18) is applied after the NCAA Championship, he will finish with a Points Average of approximately 811.
In partnership with the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®), PGA TOUR University ranks collegiate players based on their average performance in NCAA Division-I men’s team competitions, official PGA TOUR tournaments and select DP World Tour events. The Ranking Period for the Class of 2023 began Week 23/2021 and concludes May 29, 2023, following the final round of stroke play at the NCAA D-I Men’s National Championship.
NCAA Regionals
In the second year of his ranking period, if a player was eligible (on a qualifying team or qualified to compete as an individual) and did not compete in a NCAA D-I Regional Championship, he received 3 points and added a divisor to his PGA Tour University record.
NCAA Championship
For players in the PGA TOUR University Class of 2023, the points distribution for the NCAA Championship is based on a WAGR Power of 1000. Additionally, players in the current season PGA TOUR University Ranking will receive bonus points if they finish in the top 10 of the final stroke-play leaderboard, with the champion earning 15 bonus points. With these provisions, a current-year player will earn 40 points if he wins the individual NCAA Championship.
