What Are The Age Requirements For The Senior PGA Tour?

How Do You Qualify For The Senior PGA Tour?

Players need to meet certain criteria to qualify for the Senior PGA Tour. Here are the common ways to qualify for the Senior PGA Tour:

Age Requirement: As covered above, the first requirement for the Senior PGA Tour is reaching the age of 50 or older. Once a golfer turns 50, they become eligible to compete on the PGA Tour Champions.

Exemptions: Some players may receive exemptions based on their accomplishments during their regular PGA Tour careers. These exemptions can include major championship victories or a specific number of PGA Tour wins. Exemptions are typically granted to top performers on the regular tour.

Qualifying Tournaments: The PGA Tour Champions holds qualifying tournaments for golfers who have not earned exemptions. These tournaments provide an opportunity for senior golfers to compete for a limited number of spots in PGA Tour Champions events .

Who Is The Oldest Player To Win A Senior PGA Tour Event?

In 2021, Bernhard Langer made history by becoming the oldest to win on the Champions Tour at the age of 64. He repeated this feat at age 64 and went on to break his own record in 2022, winning as a 65-year-old.

In 2023, he extended his record by winning multiple times at the age of 65. Langer’s record now stands at 65 years, 10 months, and 5 days when he secured victory at the 2023 U.S. Senior Open.

With this latest achievement, Langer dominates the list of oldest senior tour winners, holding the top five spots.

Can Senior PGA Players Use A Cart?

Unlike the PGA Tour’s rule on golf carts , Senior PGA players are allowed to use carts during tournament rounds. This accommodation is made to help older golfers manage the physical demands of playing multiple rounds of golf at a high level, considering the age and potential mobility issues of some participants.

Given Tiger’s unmatched career on the PGA Tour, he would be an automatic qualifier to the PGA Champions Tour. The only criteria holding him back from playing would be his age.

Tiger Woods was born on December 30, 1975. Based on his birthdate, he would become eligible for the PGA Tour Champions on December 30, 2025.

How old does a golfer need to be to play on the PGA Tour Champions?

The PGA Tour Champions, formerly known as the Champions Tour and originally named the Senior PGA Tour, features legendary golfers competing over the course of a 10- or 11-month season for titles, trophies, money and the season-long race known as the Charles Schwab Cup.

Playing on the PGA Tour Champions is seen as a privilege, a reward for being a notable and exceptional pro golfer throughout a lengthy career on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour or elsewhere in golf. The events the PGA Tour Champions owns have no cut, meaning every golfer is paid for finishing the event. The tournaments are typically 54 holes, asking a little less of players who are older.

However, here is an age minimum to compete on the PGA Tour Champions.

A participant in a PGA Tour Champions event -- pro or amateur -- has to be at least 50 years old when the event in which they're playing starts. A player could be 49 in the week of the event, provided they turn 50 by the time they tee off in the first round.

This has always been the case with the PGA Tour Champions, and there's no reason to believe that will change in the future. The 50-year-old age minimum also applies to the major championships they don't run, like the US Senior Open, Senior PGA Championship and The Senior Open Championship.

On the Legends of the LPGA Tour, a player has to be 45 years old to compete in their events. However, a player must be 50 years old or older to compete in the US Senior Women's Open, conducted by the USGA.

There is no maximum age for the PGA Tour Champions events. So long as a player qualifies or is invited, and they're 50 years old or older, they can play.

What Is The PGA Tour Champions?

In order for a golfer to be eligible for the PGA Tour Champions, they must be at least 50 years old.  This is because the tour is designed for older golfers who may have passed their prime but still want to compete at a high level. They may not be able to compete with their younger competitors anymore, but they can still compete well enough to participate in the PGA Tour Champions.

Up until the creation of the PGA Tour Champions, the only major golf event out there for older professional golfers was the Senior PGA Championship, which was founded in 1937. This was the case for nearly 40 years until the PGA Tour Champions began.

In 1978, the Legends of Golf event took place, which featured some of the best older golfers of the day and was televised by NBC. The success of this event brought about the idea for a senior-level tour. In 1980, the tour was officially created, and it was originally called the Senior PGA Tour.

In October of 2002, the tour was renamed to the Champions Tour. It kept this name for over a decade until the present-day name of PGA Tour Champions was adopted in 2015.

Some of the best golfers of all time have participated in the PGA Tour Champions over the years. Names like Jack Nicklaus , Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Phil Mickelson have all participated in the tour since its inception.

The PGA Tour Champions season includes 28 tournaments. The first 25 make up the regular season, and the final three tournaments comprise the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. Each event on the tour is played over three rounds, instead of the four-round play found on the PGA Tour. As a result of this format, there is no cut, and the entire field plays all three rounds.

In the PGA Tour Champions, a playoff-style competition is used to determine the season champion, who wins the Charles Schwab Cup. Qualification is based on money earned during the regular season, with the top 72 finishers qualifying for the playoffs. The playoffs use a points system in which the points awarded are equivalent to the prize money earned. Similar to the FedEx Cup in the PGA Tour, the field is cut to 54 for the Dominion Charity Classic and then to 36 golfers for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

The PGA Tour Champions, commonly known as the Champions Tour, is the PGA Tour's professional senior tour, where the best golfers aged 50 and above compete.

Champions Tour Qualifying

In general, qualifying for PGA Tour Champions events is restricted to those players who finished in the top 50 of last year's competition and those age eligible players who are in the top 70 of the all-time money list from PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions events.

In addition, exemptions are given to members of the World Golf Hall of Fame and winners of previous PGA Tour Champions events. As with PGA Tour events, sponsors are also allowed to bring a small number of golfer's into a given event.

A select number of spots in Champions Tour events are also up for grabs each week through Monday qualifying , similar to other professional tours.

History of the Champions Tour

While senior golf tournaments, like the Senior PGA Championship, have been around since 1937, a formal PGA Tour for seniors was not established until 1980. Don January and Arnold Palmer were the tour’s first two winners.

The idea for a senior tour grew out of the highly successful 1978 Legends of Golf tournament at Onion Creek Club in Austin, Texas. The event featured competition from some of the greatest senior golfers at the time who competed in teams of two.

From 1980 until 2002, the tour was known as the Senior PGA Tour before transitioning to the Champions Tour until the latest name change to PGA Tour Champions in 2016.

A typical seasons on the Champions Tour consists of 26 events, mostly in the United States.

PGA Tour & Champions Tour Differences

While sharing many similarities with the PGA Tour, the PGA Tour Champions has several differences.

One difference is the allowance of golf carts at some events. Most of the events take place over three rounds  with 54 holes and no cut instead of four rounds totalling 72 holes with a 36-hole cut on the PGA Tour.

While there are seldom cuts in the PGA Tour Champions events, three of the five senior majors play a standard four-round, 72 hole tournament with a 36-hole cut.

Senior Majors

Just like the PGA Tour, the PGA Tour Champions has its own series of major championships. The senior majors include The Tradition, the Senior PGA Championship, the Senior Players Championship, the U.S. Senior Open, and The Senior Open Championship.

Charles Schwab Cup

Each year, the tour ends in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, the final tournament in a three-tournament play-off series mirrored after the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup.

The Charles Schwab Cup began in 1990 and took its current format in 2016, when the tour moved to a playoff format, and the top 72 players on the money list automatically qualify for the first playoff event.

There is also a Wildcard Weekend the week prior to the playoffs at the SAS Championship which allows for one player who finishes in the top 10 that week, but is outside the money list’s top 72, to advance to the playoffs.

The first playoff event is the Dominion Energy Charity Classic event at Richmond’s Country Club of Virginia James River Course. The second event is the Simmons Bank Championship at Pleasant Valley CC in Little Rock Arkansas, and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, the final event, takes place at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona.

Champions Tour All-Time Money List

Since the PGA Tour Champions inception in 1980, the circuit continues to grow. Lee Trevino became the first senior tour winner to win $1 million in 1990.

Hale Irwin is the winningest golfer in Champions history with 45 victories, but isn’t at the top of the all-time money winner list. There have been six golfers to surpass the $15 million mark, three have surpassed the $20 million and one player, Bernhard Langer, has made more than $30 million dollars.

As of the finish of the 2023 season, here are the top 10 PGA Tour of Champions All-time Money winners.

Bernhard Langer set for PGA Tour Champions return after Achilles tear

At age 66, Bernhard Langer believes he still has a lot of good golf left in him.

Bernhard Langer is set to make a triumphant return to the PGA Tour Champions at this week’s Insperity Invitational — his 342nd start on the senior circuit — three months after the 66-year-old tore his left Achilles tendon.

Langer injured his Achilles tendon on February 1st during a game of pickleball. He had surgery the next day, and his recovery timeline derailed his previously-announced plans to make this year’s Masters his last.

Langer isn’t the first Tour player to sustain an injury playing pickleball . Recent PGA Tour winner Akshay Bhatia dislocated his shoulder playing the game a couple of years ago — an injury that still bothers him.

Langer told the Champions Tour he was encouraged by New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who underwent surgery for a torn Achilles in September, and was throwing footballs again three months later.

“That lifted my spirits, hearing he was back on the field throwing the ball after eight or nine weeks,” Langer told the Champions Tour. “That encouraged me that I may do something similar.”

Langer opted for the same “SpeedBridge” procedure as Rodgers, which is touted as allowing for immediate weight-bearing and range of motion, thereby enabling a faster track to full recovery.

Langer was serious about his PT, and spent time wearing a boot, getting around on a scooter and with a crutch as support. He says he was able to stand unassisted for the first time just a few weeks ago, and has only recently started hitting balls.

Langer will turn 67 this summer, and has been setting a new standard for senior-level achievement since he joined the Champions Tour in 2007. Langer is the only player in history to have won all five senior major titles, and last year, he eclipsed Hale Irwin’s win-total record with his 46th title at the U.S. Senior Open.

“I think I can still be very productive for a few more years,” Langer said. “I still think I have a lot of good golf left in me.”

Bernhard Langer, 66, set to return to PGA Tour 3 months after tearing Achilles

From hole-in-ones to healed in three — months, that is. Bernhard Langer, a two-time Masters champion, will tee up at the PGA Tour Champions next week after tearing his Achilles tendon in February.

In a statement at the time through the PGA Tour, the 66-year-old said he tore his Achilles tendon "during training exercises."

Langer later admitted during a March interview on the "Musings on Golf" podcast that his injury came from playing pickleball. 

He had announced in January that the 2024 Masters Tournament would be his last. Though Langer did appear at Augusta earlier this month and took part in the proceedings, he did not play.

On Friday, the PGA Tour Champions announced Langer's return in the upcoming Insperity Invitational in Houston, Texas, next week, along with a video documenting his recovery process from various walking boots to physical therapy — and citing Aaron Rodgers as inspiration.

"I heard from other athletes who had similar injuries, like Aaron Rodgers," Langer said in the video. "That encouraged me that I might be able to do something similar."

Rodgers, the 40-year-old quarterback for the New York Jets, tore his Achilles tendon in the Jets' season opener last September.

Langer is the current record holder for the PGA Tour Champions, a senior tour for golfers over age 50, with 46 wins. He is the only player to win the tour over age 64 – which he has done four times. Langer won the Masters in 1985 and 1993. 

"If I get back to being my best again, even at my age, I still think I'm competitive. And I still think I can win on certain golf courses," Langer said in the video.

The Open will reduce its age limit to 55 for future champions

The Open Championship is reducing the age limit to 55 for winners of the claret jug this year and beyond, part of a few tweaks to its exemption categories announced Wednesday.

Among the changes are to take the leading five players from the International Federation Ranking — the top players from the money lists of Japan, Asian, Australian and South African tours, plus the next-highest player in the Official World Golf Ranking from those tours.

The PGA Championship also has provided spots from the International Federation Ranking.

The 152nd Open is July 18-21 at Royal Troon in Scotland.

The Open changed its age limit from 65 to 60 in 2010, and it now will be 55 for anyone winning at Royal Troon and in future years.

It is not likely to have a dramatic effect. John Daly, who will be 58 at this year’s Open, can continue playing until 60.

The 55-age limit applies only to The Open champions from this year and onward.

The Open still includes the top 30 from the prior year’s DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai and the top 30 from the prior year’s PGA TOUR FedExCup standings.

It has added an exemption for the new Africa Amateur champion, to go with spots for the Latin America Amateur and Asia-Pacific Amateur champions.

Still in effect is the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking through May 26.
