Jason Day's Masters pants crack up golf fans: "I'm legitimately concerned he might set sail"

Jason Day's choice of clothing amused a number of golf fans on day one of the 2024 Masters at Augusta National.

We've seen some dodgy outfit choices so far at the 2024 Masters . 

First we saw Sergio Garcia and his wife Angela wearing matching outfits on day one at Augusta National. 

The 2017 champion wore a Master-inspired yellow and green outfit that drew comparisons of an upside down sponge . 

Judge for yourself, but over at GolfMagic we are definitely not buying his clobber anytime soon. 

And then we have Jason Day , who was playing alongside Tiger Woods and Max Homa . 

Day, a dark horse to win the major given his return to form over the last 18 months, also wore a Masters-inspired green shirt. 

But it was his blue trousers, or 'pants' if you're American, that really turned heads. 

As the wind picked up, some golf fans on X joked that he would soon set sail. 

"I'm legitimately concerned," one fan wrote.

Another added: "Jason Day looks like he's taking brunch orders at a new outdoor restaurant in L.A. because 'he's between acting jobs' and needs to make rent."

In reference to Woods' attire in his pomp, another user wrote: "Tiger must have smiled nostalgically when he saw Jason Day's pants today."

They look like clunky beepers from a bygone era, but, in fact, those devices attached to the back of players’ belts at the Hero World Challenge this week are packed with new-age technology.  

Rickie Fowler was wearing one Friday. Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth , too.

In a few words, they’re GPS trackers. In a few more words, they’re what the PGA Tour hopes will be a key tool in its efforts to expand and improve its ShotLink system, a sprawling network that collects and disseminates players’ scoring and statistical data in real-time.

At most Tour events, ShotLink is powered by a small army of volunteers who gather data from sensors — a combination of radar, cameras and/or lasers — that capture the path and movement of every shot. Distance, flight apex, proximity to the hole: you name it, ShotLink tracks it, beaming the intel almost instantaneously to golf fans, bettors and stats nerds all over the world.

Trouble is, the technology is cumbersome and expensive, meaning it’s not available at all events. Overseas tournaments, for example, aren’t wired for ShotLink. Nor are all the courses at events with multiple host sites (i.e., the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am). The more portable tracking devices — with which ShotLink administrators already have been experimenting on the Korn Ferry and Champions tours — could solve for these challenges. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to also see the tech in use on the LPGA Tour?    

“The few pros I asked about it on Wednesday seemed intrigued by the idea and not overly bothered by the clip-on device,” my colleague, Dylan Dethier, reported earlier this week . “But the Tour will undergo more testing before putting the tech into play for tournament rounds.”

The PGA Tour did not immediately respond to a query about the goal of this week’s experiment. But the devices — or “bugs,” as the ShotLink staff calls them — did make a cameo on the Golf Channel broadcast Friday, with roving reporter John Wood noting: “They’ve been in R&D for a couple of years. They take a reading of the players’ location every three seconds, plot it on a graph and then when they get to their ball — once they hit — the walking scorer will hit a button and that gives them their yardage.”

Among endless other data points.

Nifty stuff.

Why is Lexi Thompson wearing pants on the PGA Tour at the Shriners Children’s Open?

Lexi Thompson is making her PGA Tour debut this week at the 2023 Shriners Children's Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nev.

In the first round, Thompson shot 2-over 73, hampered by some short-game woes and a three-putt from 13 feet. Overall, though, Thompson fared well in her approach play and did well enough off the tee despite not stacking up quite as well in terms of distance off the tee compared to PGA Tour pros.

While her performance is certain eye-catching, a lot of golf fans will notice that Thompson is wearing pants this week on the PGA Tour instead of the skirt she might typically wear. That's confusing to some folks, but it has been the case that women competing on the PGA Tour -- including Michelle Wie West, Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley and Brittany Lincicome -- have all worn pants in their rounds. Why is that?

Why is Lexi Thompson wearing pants on the PGA Tour?

Thompson is wearing pants on the PGA Tour because the PGA Tour regulations require all players to cover their legs with golf attire. That's a standard regulation for every player, which is why PGA Tour players don't wear shorts from week to week, even when they're playing in warm-weather climates.

At PGA of America-run events, including the PGA Championship, players are allowed to wear shorts, skirts and other leg-exposing clothing during practice rounds. However, during the PGA Championship and Ryder Cup championship rounds, players must wear pants.

On the LPGA Tour, the dress code is different, and players are, of course, allowed to wear appropriate clothing of their choosing. They can wear shorts, skirts, skorts, pants, a dress.

While this isn't an issue fans think about or notice most weeks on the PGA Tour, it does catch a fan's attention in the instances when a woman comes from the LPGA Tour to compete on the PGA Tour and wears a significantly different set of clothing to play.

What you need to know about fits over the not-so-fitted fits of pro golfer Jason Day

Style-spotting for both  the golfers playing  and the  fans attending  is a longstanding tradition of  The Masters  media coverage. And for good reasons. 

Very few events can attract a milieu of humanity, like the iconic event held each year at Augusta National. With  celebrities ,  billionaires ,  Olympians , casual golf fans, and professional golfers from all over the world all mingling in one place, you’re bound to spot  an exciting outfit  or two. 

This year, the world’s former number-one ranked golfer in the world’s attire has captured the tournament’s attention. 

On the first Thursday of the 2024 tournament, Australian golfer Jason Day wore some  noticeably baggy pants , complete with an elastic waistband and ankle cords, made by L.A. luxury golf brand  Malbon .

It’s hard to know which Malbon pants these are exactly, but from what we can tell, they could be a monotone / de-branded version of the Lodge Nylon Pant shown below.

Are these the baggy pants that were the talk of the 2024 Masters?

Malbon Lodge Nylon Pant

Like virtually all pro golfers these days, Day’s decision to wear Malbon wasn’t by accident. After seven years as an ambassador for Nike,  Day officially switched to become Malbon’s first brand ambassador on the PGA Tour . 

The relatively young brand, founded in 2017 and devoted to inspiring “today’s youth to participate in the greatest game on Earth,” has been a fast-rising style darling of golf apparel since its launch. 

From the moment Day transitioned to the new brand, eagle-eyed golf journalists noticed his look on the course had evolved. Like the  individual style evolution of Tiger Woods , the general trends in pro golfer attire have shifted more towards slimmer and trimmer tailored and athletic cuts. Day was much the same during his Nike years. 

However, the desire to broaden notions of acceptable golf attire was a shared interest of Day and Malbon co-founder Jason Malbon.  According to an article in  Sports Illustrated   covering the new partnership, Day, in a text to Malbon, remarked that his fellow Tour athletes looked “the exact same.” 

In other words, standing out for Jason Day and Malbon, to borrow a line from Heath Ledger’s Joker in  The Dark Knight , is  all part of the plan , which is why, after seeing the outcry on Thursday, it should be no surprise to anyone that his follow-up outfit on Friday was equally divisive.

In the case of this bold sweater choice, though, Day’s move could have caught the ire of more than just traditionalist fans, presumably by violating the  Tour’s vague player endorsement policy , which follows. 

“ All names, brands, logos and other marks and identifiers (“marks”) on a player’s apparel, headwear, golf bag and golf equipment must be in good taste as to content, size, location and quantity, as reasonably determined by the PGA TOUR. “

As it turns out for whatever reason – maybe he just go hot, Day opted to  remove the sweater later in the match.

Still, no matter what happens during the rest of the 2024 Masters Tournament, both Jason Day and Malbon can confidently say their mission of disrupting golf style conventions is now officially accomplished.

Once again, Jason Day and Malbon Golf have taken over the social media discussion. At the 88th Masters Tournament , the Aussie wore baggier pants on Thursday and a bold sweater vest on Friday at Augusta National.

It isn’t the first time Day’s fashion choices have caused havoc online. Day left Nike at the beginning of 2024. He made his debut in Malbon at The Sentry with a baggy pant. Most fans hated them prompting the trolls to come out and play on social media.

Throughout the season, his fashion choices have been at the forefront because they are different. They aren’t the traditional country club fit. Some trousers are slightly baggier, and the patterns are more out-of-the-box.

Malbon beats to its own drum , but the brand isn’t stupid. By creating these unique looks, the created discussion plays into their hands. People create noise around its clothing, which, in return, is free marketing. They are getting eyes on their products regardless of whether people like them or not. So fans can complain all they want; it isn’t going to make the brand change who it is.

Fans absolutely lost their marbles after he rocked those pants, especially with the wind gusting furiously.

Fashion isn’t made for everyone to like. Malbon won’t please every consumer in the golf world, but they are creating discussion. This brand is taking a risk where most are just giving fans another floral moment that feels new.

Fans don’t have to like it. Some will, and that’s who Malbon’s demographic is. Golf fashion is slowly evolving, which will help the game grow further.

Malbon Golf knows what it’s doing, though. They are the talk of Augusta National and the Masters Tournament.

Greg Norman’s magnetic presence at the Masters is evidence that LIV and PGA Tours must reconcile

A UGUSTA, Ga. — On Wednesday, LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman showed up at Augusta National unannounced, uninvited, and clearly unwelcome. He had to buy his own ticket, caused a stir wherever he went, and stole headlines from the players and the club and the game on the eve of the Masters, golf’s most pleasant week.

He said he came to support his 13 LIV Tour players, who are banned from regular PGA Tour events.

He came back Thursday, and he did just that. Still fit as a fighter at 69, with broad shoulders and wiry forearms, he wore a black straw hat, black LIV golf shirt, black golf shoes and socks, and gray golf pants tight in the thigh and the calf. He cut a striking figure, but it had to be humbling and it had to be tiring as he attacked Augusta National’s hills with the vigor of the logo on his lid, a great white shark.

He had to walk with the patrons, mingle with the unwashed. He craned his neck to see Cam Smith, one of LIV’s marquee names, putt on hole No. 4. He peeked around a tree to watch Rory McIlroy, one of LIV’s staunchest opponents, rip one from the forest on No. 2. And, for three hours, not a sour word was said, either to his face or behind his back.

This was remarkable. Norman has spent most of his retirement burning bridges. No one in the golfing world has been as divisive an element between LIV and the PGA Tour as Norman. Fans do not care.

They don’t see him as an existential threat to golf as we know it. They don’t see him as an agent of the oppressive Saudi government.

They see him as the brash and handsome Australian who, 30 years ago, held the No. 1 ranking for 331 weeks, second only to Tiger Woods. And they, like some of golf’s greatest living legends, want the tours to settle things as soon as possible so they can watch the world’s best play against each other as often as possible. Current LIV golfers have won three of the last five majors, but they only play professional tournaments against PGA Tour golfers at the majors.

“I know the three of us want to get together,” said Tom Watson, who, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player served as honorary starters Thursday. They want “The best players playing against each other. The bottom line; that’s what we want in professional golf, and right now, we don’t have it.”

After more than a year of public feuding, the PGA and LIV Tours agreed last June that the PGA Tour would form a partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which fuels LIV. The ratification of any final agreement remains months away, but Nicklaus said he recently asked PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan about the state of negotiations:

“I said, ‘How are you doing?’ He said, ‘We’re doing fine.‘ ”

When an agreement is reached, there won’t be pushback from PGA loyalists like McIlroy.

“I want the train to speed up so we can get this thing over and done with,” he said last month at The Players Championship. “Fans are fatigued of what’s going on in the game.”

That’s a far cry from where McIlroy and most of golf fandom were a year ago, when Augusta National denied Norman the gratis access to which he’d become accustomed. He didn’t crash the party last year. This year, he did. Fans who might have shunned Norman a year ago embraced him Thursday:

“Great to see you, Greg!”

(Whisper) “ That’s the Shark!”

“Hey, Greg, thanks for all the memories!”

Norman was extremely patient and unfailingly gracious, but he didn’t come to campaign, and he didn’t come to be seen, despite the assumption of some cynics (raises hand). He came to support his guys, and he did.

Mostly, he followed new LIV golfer and defending Masters champion Jon Rahm down the first hole and stayed with him through his tee shot on No. 5. There he paused, because Cam Smith was in the group behind him, then rejoined Rahm. By the time Rahm finished the front nine, overnight leader Bryson DeChambeau was finishing his 7-under round, which led the field by 3 shots at that moment. Norman waited for him behind the 18th green and gave him a handshake and hug over the ropes. DeChambeau’s eyes lit up.

“I think it shows he cares, first off,” DeChambeau said later. “I respect him coming out here and showing support.”

DeChambeau, a social media addict, realized that Norman took plenty of heat online Wednesday when he cast his considerable shadow on the tournament, but he insisted the Shark’s heart was in the right place:

“I think the people can view it multiple ways. I just look at it as a sign that he cares and nothing more than that. And if people have a different perspective on that, then that’s up for them to decide. But in my opinion, it just shows that he really cares about the game in general.”

After Norman hugged DeChambeau he scampered over to the practice green. There, he waited for LIV star Dustin Johnson to finish pulling seven-footers. I introduced myself, shook Norman’s hand, remarked on how welcoming the patrons had been, and he thanked me, but he didn’t want to talk about it. He was too busy, and DJ was heading to the first tee.

Norman scampered to the practice green exit, grabbed Johnson as he walked past, and wished him luck. Johnson smiled.

“Great to see you,” Johnson said as they briefly hugged. “Thanks for coming out.”

Norman beamed.

Masters amateur Christo Lamprecht, 6-foot-8, does not have his head in clouds

Christo Lamprecht Sr. kept getting interrupted – by texts, calls and co-workers in the office who saw what was happening.

“I’m busy,” Lamprecht Sr. told them. “What’s so interesting?”

They implored him to check The Open’s leaderboard. That’s when it became clear.

“Oh, my goodness,” he said.

Some 8,500 miles away in Hoylake, England, his college-aged son was setting the golf world ablaze.

Who is this kid? Where did he come from? How is he doing this? At The Open Championship, of all places?

Lamprecht Sr. quickly caught up on the highlights. He saw his son, also named Christo, make routine birdies on Nos. 3 and 5, and hit his approach shot on the par-3 sixth to 4 feet. He watched the chip-in birdie on the 14th and one last one on the closing hole. The younger Lamprecht doffed his cap to the crowd and soaked in the moment as he walked off the 18th green, then signed for a 66 that no one could better on the opening day at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. The senior Lamprecht, an accountant back in his hometown of George, a coastal city in South Africa’s Western Cape, shook his head.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” he said.

That Thursday at Royal Liverpool was Lamprecht’s “Hello world” moment. He didn’t sustain the remarkable play, but the golf world was introduced to another young phenom that day, one who amazed with the power produced by his 6-foot-8 frame.

Amateur Christo Lamprecht chips in for birdie at The Open

Lamprecht, 23, earned his place at The Open with his victory at the 2023 British Amateur. Now another major opportunity awaits. He is the headliner among the five amateurs in the field at this week’s Masters Tournament.

Lamprecht, a senior at Georgia Tech, is the top player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and No. 2 in PGA TOUR University, trailing only Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen. History is on Lamprecht’s side, as well. He is the third Yellow Jacket to win the British Amateur, joining two important figures in Augusta National’s history: Bobby Jones, the club’s co-founder, and Charlie Yates, a former low-amateur in the Masters and the club’s longtime secretary.

Lamprecht’s presence is a connection to the past and another step in a bright future. He was a first-team All-American in 2023 and is on pace to earn that honor again this year. He’s finished no worse than T16 in eight starts this season, including a victory at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (at Olympia Fields) and two runners-up.

He also was just two strokes off the lead halfway through the DP World Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Championship in his native South Africa. It wasn’t just his score that amazed. Lamprecht blasted an incredible 418-yard drive on the par-5 18th hole in the first round at Leopard Creek Country Club.

“No!” a SkySports announcer exclaimed. “That is ridiculous.”

“Everyone talks about it now,” Lamprecht told PGATOUR.COM, pointing out the shot was downhill and downwind, “but it was just another drive down the fairway for me.”

In golf’s distance age, Lamprecht stands alone with rare physical gifts that cannot be replicated. Only four of the 16 players on Georgia Tech’s basketball team are taller than him. He may be taking those talents to the PGA TOUR soon.

The top-ranked player in PGA TOUR University after this year’s NCAA Championship will follow in Ludvig Åberg’s footsteps by immediately earning a PGA TOUR card. The Masters, in addition to giving him invaluable experience on arguably the game’s biggest stage, will count toward those standings, meaning a good finish this week could set him up for so much more than the prestigious low-amateur prize.

The lessons he learned at Liverpool will come in handy.

A major championship allows an amateur to become famous faster than a ball leaves the clubface of Lamprecht’s driver. Five months after The Open, Lamprecht sat on a serene South African cliffside and recalled the week to PGATOUR.COM, which visited him in his home country last December.

“I felt probably every emotion possible throughout that four rounds of golf,” he said.

Lamprecht admits being thrown by the experience, by all the demands that followed his first round. The day was an amalgamation of excitement, gratitude and a heavy dose of “oh s---, this just got real.” He barely made the cut after a second-round 79 and finished T74. But he also was the only amateur to make the cut. And now he has an opportunity to put everything that he learned into practice at Augusta National, a course he’s played numerous times. Georgia Tech is just two hours away in Jones’ hometown of Atlanta.

This week won’t be the first time he’s seen Amen Corner or attempted to knock it tight to the traditional Sunday hole location on 16. There’s familiarity with the course, even if everything else surrounding the week will be different.

With Lamprecht set to see more TV time this week at Augusta National, he would like to address the elephant in the room. Something that has been a hot topic since Royal Liverpool. His swing is… interesting .

If Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott are perfect portraits of the swing, à la Rembrandt, Lamprecht is more like the work of an abstract expressionist. By his own admission, his action is not visually appealing, but while it’s atypical, that’s a product of his lanky frame. His right knee dips abnormally low to the ground at contact as if he is chasing a 70 mph breaking ball low and away. The result is beautiful, though. Lamprecht averages about 325 yards off the tee on a standard course. He’s found the swing that works for him.

“The golf swing doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be in control,” Lamprecht said.

While most observers obsess over the look of Lamprecht’s swing, another of the game’s sweet swingers says the secret is in the sound.

“As a person that understands ball striking, you don’t have to look at it, you just hear it,” said Ernie Els, a longtime friend of the Lamprecht family. “And at 16 (Lamprecht) had that distinctive hit on the ball. To come from this little town here and to have this kind of talent come out of this area is quite incredible.”

Lamprecht’s growth spurt came relatively late in his development, but at a perfect time for his golf. Lamprecht was required to develop a strong short game because he stood just 5-foot-7 at the start of high school. He loves his lob wedge and likes hitting soft flop shots as much as booming drives. When he practiced as a kid, he wouldn’t let himself leave until he holed a chip and a bunker shot, reminiscent of another South African, Gary Player.

But when Lamprecht started rapidly sprouting, he went through new clubs every six months and pants even faster. His friends called him Melman, a reference to the giraffe from the movie “Madagascar.” Even now, standing 6-foot-8, Lamprecht’s legs are disproportionately longer than they should be for his height. With the maximum legal length of a driver capped at 46 inches, it limits the equipment he can use. His irons are 1.5 inches longer than standard.

This should come as no surprise, given that his grandfather was also 6-foot-8. His great-grandfather, who immigrated from Germany to George and was the town’s first doctor, dentist, and pharmacist before later becoming mayor, was 7 feet tall.

“When you get really tall, in the five percentile of height like he is… the conventional aspects of the golf swing can be thrown out the window because your levers are so long,” said Stewart Cink, the former Open champion and Georgia Tech alum who occasionally practices alongside the team. “It just creates a certain type of leg action and body action that we are not used to seeing. He’s made it his and done a pretty good job of it.”

Bruce Heppler, the Georgia Tech coach, puts Lamprecht in an elite class. “He’s the best I’ve seen in 40 years off the tee and he’s that good around the green, too,” said Heppler, who has led the Yellow Jackets for 29 years and is the 10th-longest tenured head coach in Division I.

Those are bold statements, but the subject of that praise does his best to ignore it. Lamprecht tries not to look too far ahead.

“To think about everything that I want to accomplish and not actually appreciating where I'm at would do myself wrong,” he said.

Lamprecht may be a ceiling-scraper at nearly 7 feet, and yes, the sky is the limit, but he still doesn’t have his head in the clouds. He keeps a tangible reminder on the course, with “CWYC” written on his golf glove. It stands for “Control what you control,” and he taps the glove when he needs a reminder. He added a cross to the end of the acronym recently, a reminder of his faith but also an homage to a friend who tragically passed away in a car accident.

“I’m doing what I’m loving. I’ve got all 10 fingers and all 10 toes and I’m still enjoying the sport. I’ve got a lot of things to be thankful for,” Lamprecht said.

Lamprecht would like to think he’s slowly built toward thriving in these moments. The Open was the most recent, but he’s been stacking these experiences since he was a boy trying to hit carts on the range of Kingswood Golf Course. He refined his game at the Louis 57 Academy, a junior teaching program in the Southern Cape of South Africa founded by Louis Oosthuizen. Before he was a teenager, Lamprecht’s lesson plans were crafted with Oosthuizen’s input. He’d already become friends with Els, as well. His family and Els’ both owned property in Herolds Bay, a beach town southwest of George.

Lamprecht Sr. let his son play alongside him as soon as the excitable junior was strong enough to hit a wedge over the 100-foot tree in their yard. Soon after, Lamprecht competed in tournaments with kids five years older than him. When he reached high school, he ditched tennis, rugby and cricket and put his full energy into golf. And at 16, Lamprecht cemented his status as a prodigy, winning the South African Amateur Championship, becoming the youngest winner in the event’s 110-year history – younger than past winners Els, Trevor Immelman and Retief Goosen.

Lamprecht competed on Junior Presidents Cup teams and twice played the Junior PLAYERS Championship. He was drawn to Georgia Tech after coach Heppler, who had spent time in South Africa, greeted Lamprecht in Afrikaans, South Africa’s native tongue. The recruiting all but ended there; Lamprecht was a Yellow Jacket.

Lamprecht’s stroke average dropped by more than a shot between his freshman and sophomore seasons at Georgia Tech, and he won for the first time in his junior season. In 11 events that year, he notched eight top 10s. He was a finalist for the Fred Haskins Award, given to the country’s top collegiate player.

“He’s just got this unbelievable power on one end of the spectrum,” said Cink. “And incredible touch and finesse on the short little tiny shots around the green that you just don’t see from very many players, especially somebody who is 6-8.”

Lamprecht’s immense talent has everyone buying in. Heppler expects Lamprecht to leave Georgia Tech as one of the school’s best. Cink believes PGA TOUR success will quickly follow. Els envisions Lamprecht as the next great South African golfer.

Lamprecht can’t get there mentally. Not yet. The 23-year-old amateur is focused on where his feet are – firmly planted at Augusta National.
