Guide to Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal Parking

The traveler's guide to port canaveral cruise terminal parking.

Port Canaveral is a popular spot. Cape Canaveral is home to the Kennedy Space Center and beautiful beaches, and it takes second place in the list of busiest cruise ports .

Did you know? After the Port of Miami, we see more cruise passengers than anywhere else in the whole world ( over 4 million every year )!

But being one of the busiest ports also means that we need some place to put all of those traveling cars throughout the year.

That’s where our local Port Canaveral cruise parking facilities come in.

At Port Canaveral Parking , we offer the best in  off-site  parking for parties hoping to save while they sail. With secure parking and complimentary shuttles for your cruise vacation, it’s easy to save money while getting the best  off-site  cruise parking.

But what about on-site options ? Today we’re going to be going over the pros and cons of parking at the cruise ship terminal in our guide to on-site parking at Port Canaveral.

Navigating Port Canaveral Cruise Terminals

Our six cruise terminals are 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10. Cruise Terminal A is home to terminals 5, 6, 8, and 10, while 1 and 3 are located in Cruise Terminal B . The split can be a little confusing for travelers, especially if you can’t remember where the cruise lines are docking at.

Cruise Terminal B is where you can also go for a bite to eat, to see the port at the Exploration Tower, or check out CT-3, our brand-new multi-million dollar spot for the largest ships. Terminal A is less exciting, but it hosts more ships as well as the cargo piers.

Official Port Canaveral Parking

Every cruise terminal has it’s own official parking facility (although some terminals share parking spots). The port runs these locations, which include covered garage parking as well as uncovered parking lots located near the terminal entrance.

The parking spots are first-come, first-served , meaning there’s no reservations and no pre-pay. You can also splurge and pay a little extra for “preferred parking”, which some terminals offer for those who want to park even closer to the ship.

While convenient, we do have some bad news: it’s $17.00 per day for the basic parking at the port. That means that for a four-night cruise, you’ll be paying $85 in parking fees alone.

Here’s a short breakdown of the pros and cons of on-site port parking.

Pros of parking at the ship

  • Spots are right at the ship . It’s true, you wouldn’t be able to park closer to the ship unless they let you bring your car on the boat.
  • Many say it’s more convenient. When you embark and disembark, you never have to worry about getting to your car.
  • It’s pretty easy. Unlike other parking facilities, you only get one option. You won’t have to choose between locations. At the port, you get what you get.
  • The port terminals offer free cruise parking for vehicles that need parking options for disabled passengers with special equipment, for those with a Florida Toll Exemption Permit, and for those who have a Florida Disabled Veteran license plate. However, this is the only free parking option from the Canaveral Port Authority.

Cons of Parking at the Cruise Port

  • Being next to the cruise ships is great – but the covered parking lot is not just a short walk from the ship. There’s no free shuttle service, so you’ll be toting your stuff from the luggage drop-off on debarkation day.
  • There are no reservations . If the cruise parking lots are full for your cruise line, you’ll have to find other arrangements.
  • Prices are subject to change , according to the website for the Port Canaveral terminals. While the base price is $17 per day, you may end up paying even more for your cruise parking.
  • Traffic can be terrible, congested, and complicated for visitors. If you’re driving yourself, be prepared for wrong turns and sitting in Port Canaveral traffic.

Alternate Port Canaveral Parking options

When it comes to finding places to park, Port Canaveral has other parking deals for your cruise adventure.

We always recommend that parties park off-site. Not only do you get access to free shuttles that drop you off right at the cruise port, many places (like Port Canaveral Parking) offer security and top-notch customer service that doesn’t come with a sky-high price tag.

All of our cruise packages for parking involve no transportation fees (your shuttle ride is complimentary!) and parking rates that are nearly half of the terminal parking.

We go to all Port Canaveral cruise lines, including Disney, Royal Caribbean International, MSC Cruises, Norwegian, and Carnival. Make same-day reservations or plan months ahead to guarantee your Port Canaveral parking spot!

Port Canaveral Hotel Cruise PArking

If you’re staying in Cocoa Beach, there are some locations that offer Port Canaveral cruise parking. The Holiday Inn Express, Country Inn, Radisson Resort, and other hotels will let you leave your vehicle during your vacation.

However, these packages are often much more expensive than leaving your car at a cruisetime parking facility. If you’re cruising on a budget or want to save up for some souvenirs, hotel parking is NOT the way to go.

What are the Best Hotels in Cocoa Beach ?

If you want to make the most of your trip to Cocoa Beach, you will want to choose one of the best hotels such as beachfront The Resort on Cocoa Beach . On the other hand, the good value Four Points by Sheraton Cocoa Beach hotel is truly unmissable while Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort is a great place to stay if you appreciate something a little fun and quirky in your hotel.

What are the Best Hotels near Port Canaveral ?

Among the best and closest hotels near Port Canaveral cruise terminal are the Homewood Suites Cape Canaveral-Cocoa Beach, Springhill Suites, Country Inn & Suites Port Canaveral and Home2 Suites by Hilton Cape Canaveral Cruise Port . Most of these properties offer a shuttle transfer and cruise parking for a fee.

Airport transfer shuttle

Some hotels offer shuttle transfers from Orlando International Airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida, although some outsource this to companies like Cocoa Beach shuttle . If you prefer booking the shuttle yourself, you can always do so. If you decide to use the hotel offered shuttle, you might end up paying a similar, slightly lower or slightly higher shuttle fee to the hotel, than you would be booking on your own.

Again, we suggest you book your hotel depending on your needs rather than their airport transfer shuttle as this can be booked separately.

Another option is to rent a single-way vehicle that can be dropped off at the car rental depot near the port. From there, you can catch a free shuttle to the port. Night stays at most hotels include free parking for the duration of your stay.

As for parking

After making a reservation of your hotel of choice, you can always park at the port . If it works for you, you can also opt for park and cruise. Stay for the night and leave your car at the hotel while on cruise. Rates begin around $6.00 per night for parking.

The decision to stay at any of the hotel mentioned here depends on what you need. Whether you are traveling with family or a pet. If you do not mind staying further inland, you also might end up saving more as hotels near the port tend to cost a bit more. That, however, means you might end up paying more for the shuttle to the port when leaving for your cruise.

Ultimately, your choice of hotel should cater to all your needs and be within your budget. Make sure to check a few hotels and compare to get the best deal.

Free Carnival Mardi Gras Parking in Port Canaveral

  • August 29, 2023

Go Port Plaza parking lot exclusively for Carnival Mardi Gas Cruisers

Carnival Mardi Gras Parking in Port Canaveral

Parking directly at Port Canaveral is expensive, so it’s no secret that many cruisers choose to park off site. But with extra fees and hidden costs appearing sneakily at checkout, the savings are never as great as they initially seem. So how do you find the actual lowest price for Port Canaveral cruise parking for your Carnival Mardi Gras sailing?

Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship sailing away from Port Canaveral

Look no further, Go Port’s FREE cruise parking package , exclusively offered for Carnival Mardi Gras cruisers, is the absolute best price in the Port Canaveral area. When you book with us, parking for your cruise is included with just the purchase of transfers to and from your ship. What’s the catch? We can assure you there isn’t one. In fact, the incredible savings are just the beginning of what makes Go Port’s cruise parking stand out from the rest!

Here are 7 reasons why you should book free cruise parking in Port Canaveral with Go Port:

Reason 1: We are the LOWEST PRICE of all Cruise Parking Options

Reason 2: all go port parking spaces are paved, reason 3: go port’s cruise parking is lighted, gated, and video monitored, reason 4: direct transfers to carnival mardi gras at terminal 3, reason 5: covered, cushioned seating and state-of-the-art restroom facilities, reason 6: luggage loading spaces and carts available.

Reason 7: Go Port’s Free Cruise Parking Port Canaveral Features Award-Winning Service

Carnival Mardi Gras Parking and Hotel Packages

Pay per stay, not per day with Go Port’s flat rate pricing. Let’s take a look at other cruise parking options to compare how our pricing is unmatched:

Other Offsite Parking Lots | Pay Per Day: Beware of changing daily rates, hidden fees, and taxes. For starters, a Carnival Mardi Gras cruise from Port Canaveral is typically 8 days. When it comes to the “pay per day” pricing structure, each day your car is parked counts as a full day, even though your vehicle is not there for long on embarkation and debarkation days. Seems a bit unfair, right? You are also led to believe you are getting a deal with the “free shuttles” they promote for 1-4 passengers, but don’t be fooled – there is no deal here. On top of that, when you calculate the 8 days of parking, the additional fees and taxes you find at checkout result in the final total being far more than expected (especially if you forget to apply the coupon code they require to get the rates advertised). Now let’s break it down:

Typical Offsite Port Canaveral Cruise Parking Lot:

(8 days parking x $12.95 per day) + $0 shuttle transfers + $15.28 taxes/fees = $118.88 total

Go Port | Pay Per Stay: Upfront, flat rate pricing that doesn’t change at checkout or charge hidden fees and taxes. Ready for simple? Go Port’s FREE Cruise Parking Package is $0 for cruise parking and only $60 total for roundtrip cruise shuttle transfers for up to 4 passengers and $20 for each additional passenger up to 6! No promo code to enter, no taxes and absolutely no hidden fees added. It’s just $60 flat for the duration of your Carnival Mardi Gras cruise!

Go Port’s Free Cruise Parking Package:

(8 days parking x $0 per day) + $60 shuttle transfers + $0 taxes/fees = $60 total

Surprisingly, many cruise parking lots for Port Canaveral are not paved. Although their websites may show you pictures of paved parking, this is only available for a few select spaces. And if you want one, unfortunately you are going to pay a premium for it. Considering Florida’s tendency to rain quite often, this is incredibly inconvenient. The last thing you want to do is drag your luggage through muddy grass and ruin your vacation sandals! With Go Port, EVERY parking space is paved and lined, ensuring the cleanest offsite parking experience around.

For the safety of you and your vehicle, our lot is lighted, gated, and video monitored 24/7. Know that your car is in good hands and under careful watch while you sail stress-free. Plus, you get to keep your keys with you!

Go Port’s lot is exclusive to Carnival Mardi Gras cruisers. This means you get express transfers with our courteous drivers directly to your ship at Terminal 3, just minutes away from our parking plaza. We’ll get you to your ship right on time!

You won’t get rained on at the Go Port Plaza! Our check-in area is covered and filled with plenty of cushioned seating with complimentary chilled water to keep you cool in the hot Florida heat. The premises also feature brand new commercial rated air-conditioned restroom facilities, which are ideal before and after a long car ride! Multiple stalls eliminate lines, and there is even a separate private stall with a changing table to provide convenience and care for the little ones.

Another standout feature is designated luggage loading spaces located right in front of the check-in area. Here you are welcome to utilize our complimentary luggage carts to keep all your belongings together before you board your shuttle.

“You can park for the duration of your cruise, safely, they transport you to and from the ship, all included at a very reasonable price.”  – James Brady | Google Reviews “We pulled up to Go Port plaza and were directed to a luggage drop off and check in. After parking our car, there was a wait of a few minutes to fill up the bus and we were off to the port. After disembarking the cruise, Go Port had a representative at a highly visible kiosk that got us on the bus and back to our car in no time. We will use them every time we cruise from Port Canaveral. Highly recommend.” – Jeff Smith | Google Reviews “Easy. Friendly. Helpful. Parked for cruise, they handled the bags. Drop off and pick up was a breeze. Would recommend!” – Brandon Brinko | Google Reviews

Explained: Free Disabled Parking for Florida Cruises

We’re all for saving money on cruises. And if you are a disabled passenger with a handicap, you should know that you could save a lot of money on parking.

Parking garage at Port Canaveral cruise terminal

All of the cruise ports in Florida — Miami, Port Everglades, Port Canaveral, Tampa, and Jacksonville — have convenient on-site cruise parking lots. This parking puts you just steps away from you ship, but it comes at a high price. These lots charge between $15-25 per day! A 7-day cruise at some ports can run a bill of nearly $200 for parking alone.

However, thanks to a Florida law, parking for disabled guests can be free. The Florida Statute is 316.1964, and it says that if one of the following criteria are met, then you are entitled to free parking:

  • Display a Florida Toll Exemption Permit
  • Drive a vehicle is modified with specialized equipment such as ramps, lifts, or foot and hand controls for use by a disabled person
  • Display the “DV” license plate – Disabled Veteran

That said, the rules around free parking are specific. For that reason, we HIGHLY suggest you contact the port ahead of time to discuss your situation and confirm you can park for free. We’ve listed contact information for each port below.

Things to note:

  • These rules require you to have modifications to your car, not just a disabled parking hangtag. Simply having a hangtag does not mean you can park for free.
  • This rules apply only to the parking lots operated by the cruise port. If you plan to park off-site at an independent lot, then you’ll have to pay for parking.

Port of Miami Free Disabled Parking

The Port of Miami has updated its rules as of November 2013. Now disabled parking is charged, unless the following requirement is met:

“In accordance with Florida Statute 316.1964, ONLY vehicles with specialized equipment such as ramps, lifts, foot or hand controls, for use by a person with a disability, or any vehicle that is displaying the “DV” license plate issued under s. 320.084, s. 320.0842, or s. 320.0845 or displaying the Florida Toll Exemption permit, is exempt from parking charges.”

To inquire if you will receive free parking, you can call the port at 305-347-4800 .

Port Everglades Free Disabled Parking

At Port Everglades, cars must have one of the following criteria met in order to qualify for free parking:

  • Display a Florida Toll Exemption Permit as explained in Florida Statute 316.1964
  • Vehicle is modified with specialized equipment such as ramps, lifts, or foot and hand controls for use by a disabled person
  • Display the “DV” license plate – Disabled Veteran – issued under Florida Statue 320.084

Meanwhile, the process for parking is very detailed. This is from the port’s website :

“At the entry to the parking garage or surface lot, pull a parking ticket from the automated machine and get the attention of one of the parking agents in an adjacent exit booth. Advise that parking agent that you would like a disability waiver of parking. The parking agent will call for a parking supervisor to determine if the vehicle qualifies.

“Once the supervisor verifies that a waiver is allowable, the driver’s name, address and the registration number on the sticker, license plate or hanging tag will be recorded on the parking ticket and signed by the supervisor. The driver will be given the parking ticket and directed to enter the garage.

“Upon exit, the parking ticket will be surrendered to the parking attendant with all parking fees waived.”

You can contact the port directly at 954-468-3680

Port Canaveral Free Disabled Parking

Port Canaveral also follows the guideline that cars must be modified for disabled persons to be eligible for free parking. From its website :

“DISABLED PARKING spaces are available, and the fee is waived for vehicles transporting certain persons who have disabilities that:

  • Have special equipment, such as ramps, lifts, foot or hand controls for use by a disabled person;
  • Display a Florida Toll Exemption Permit as explained in s. 316.1964, Florida Statutes; and
  • Display a Disabled Veteran (DV) license plate issued under s. 320.084; s. 320.0842; or s. 320.0845, Florida Statutes.

“Parking agents will not grant parking waivers for any other reason than the ones listed above.”

You can reach the port for more details at  321-783-7831, ext. 327

Port of Tampa Free Disabled Parking

As with Port Canaveral and Port Everglades, handicapped guests must have some sort of modification to their vehicles or have Disabled Veteran license plates.

Here’s what the port’s website previously said, although it appears to have been taken down :

“Tampa Port Authority follows the Florida State Statute, 316.1964, relating to handicap parking as such all customers are required to pay for parking unless their vehicle has modified foot or hand controls, wheelchair lift or ramp or has been issued a “Toll Exempt” sticker from the state of Florida. Vehicles utilizing our valet parking service do not receive any discounts.

“Should your vehicle meet the above noted criteria and is the vehicle being parked you will need to advise the parking staff on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week prior to making payment for parking.”

To call the Port of Tampa and ask about your status or specific questions, dial 813-905-7678

Port of Jacksonville Free Disabled Parking

Just as with most other ports, a hangtag on your mirror isn’t enough to earn an exemption at the Jacksonville cruise port, but they do offer free disabled parking

Here is what the cruise port’s website says about the topic :

“JAXPORT’s cruise terminal follows all guidelines outlined in the Florida statute regarding disabled parking.

“Free parking is available for drivers with a state-issued disabled veterans plate, as well as those with a Florida Toll Exemption decal that is permanently affixed to their vehicle.

“Persons in a vehicle that has been modified to accommodate a disabled driver, such as hand/foot controls and installed ramps, are eligible for free parking with a disabled parking placard or decal.”

We recommend calling the port to ask about your specific parking at  904-357-3006.

Been searching for quite a while and cannot find an answer. For people with a handicap hangtag only, are there parking spaces closer to the ship? Not asking about free parking, just closer proximity to the ship.

Yes, you’ll find closer spots.

Does a vehicle displaying the, DV from South Carolina qualifi for free parking at port miami

You can call the port to confirm, but I believe it’s only Florida plates that qualify.

My wife is disabled and I have an SUV with handicap plates and a scooter carrier on a hitch.. On occasion we’ve been denied a parking waiver mostly at Port Canaveral for not having ramps, handcontrols or a mechanized lift. Her scooter lift is .manually operated. I don’t understand are we qualifying the vehicles disability or the persons?

The issue is that Florida ONLY recognizes the FLORIDA DV plate and not the other 49 states that have disabled veterans. That a slap in the face of every veteran in America that is disabled and just as deserving as the ones with FL plates. Other cruise ports in other states don’t have an issue, only Florida. What a crock of crap

Soooo only people handicap in FL can park free. Or Disabled Vets. Not at all discredited THEM. But you’re literally leaving out 49 other states of disabled people. Got it. How stupid.

Thank you for the contact information. I have a friend whose husband drives them down from South Carolina to go on a cruise with the equipment she needs with her, They are always able to park free in their van with ramp for her powerchair. I believe they go out of Port Lauderdale each winter. So far, so good.

I think this is some straight BS. My husband lost his leg and is an above the knee amputee; he didn’t loose his leg in a war but while @ work. He has the permanent handicap license plate. It’s wrong for these ports to only allow individuals that have served this country to park for free. I’m not discrediting those individuals but their are others that suffer with other disabilities as well.

Does the vehicle have modifications to him operate it? If so, then he should be able to park for free. It might be worth a call to the port.

“In accordance with Florida Statute 316.1964, ONLY vehicles with specialized equipment such as ramps, lifts, foot or hand controls, for use by a person with a disability, or any vehicle that is displaying the “DV” license plate issued under s. 320.084 or the Florida Toll Exemption permit, is exempt from parking charges.” I have and used my DV plate at the Miami Cruise Port. I parked at no cost to me!!! The cruise ports in other Areas try to skirt the law by not posting the portion stating that a DV license Plate is also in that portion of the law not limiting it to special devices!!!

Port canaveral chalks up record month amid growing cruise demand.

Port Canaveral saw just under 800,000 cruise passengers move on and off its ships in March as part of a record year that keeps topping expectations.

That set a one-month record for the port with an average of nearly 25,600 people a day around 93 cruise ship calls. March is traditionally one of the strongest months of the year for the port with its spring break traffic.

It also marked the halfway point of the fiscal year that began in October 2023. Six months in, the port has seen 3.9 million passenger movements from 479 ship calls.

“The industry itself is very, very strong right now,” said Port CEO Capt. John Murray at the port commission meeting on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of expansion plans. The companies are starting to reorder ships again after the pandemic.”

NCL details new dining on Canaveral-bound Norwegian Aqua

That includes more ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, which has been sending its new vessels to Port Canaveral as they debut including next year’s Norwegian Aqua.

“So a lot of great things, a lot of great things, a lot of enthusiasm and I can say that the industry is 110% of what it was prior to the pandemic,” Murray said. “They are back and booming right now. So we’re fortunate to be taking advantage of that here at the port.”

Operating revenue for the year is already at $98 million, which is $3.6 million above budget. It also means the record projection of $187 million in operating revenue through the end of the fiscal year in September is likely to get surpassed as well.

Ship capacity is determined to be at 100% if each stateroom is occupied by two passengers, so ships sailing with families, for instance, will push capacity above 100% and in turn increase revenue for the port from the cruise lines as well as add to an uptick in parking charges.

Royal Caribbean to send massive Utopia of the Seas to Port Canaveral

One of the big drivers has been the addition of a second Oasis-class vessel by Royal Caribbean so that the port hosts two of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Allure of the Seas joined Wonder of the Seas last fall to begin short three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas, and will continue that until the debut of Royal’s new Utopia of the Seas this summer. Since arriving, it has added more than 650,000 passenger movements to the port’s growing tally.

The port has been home port to 13 ships from Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and MSC Cruises, and is set to welcome its first ships from both Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises this fall.

Port Canaveral plots timeline to take over marina for new cruise terminal

Right now it has six cruise terminals, but is beginning the work to eventually build a seventh later this decade. During an interview earlier in April at the Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach, Murray said the key to growth for the port will be a shift in how the port gives access to each terminal, such as how it plans to operate its seventh terminal.

“It’s going to be multiuser. It’s not going to be a single-use facility. That’s going to be how our concept of operations would be going forward,” Murray said. “The only way you’re going to get good utilization of a terminal is if you can put multiple brands in there and not have it dedicated to just one user.”

That’s how it runs several of its terminals now including Disney Cruise Line at Cruise Terminal 8 and Carnival Cruise Line at its newest terminal, Cruise Terminal 3.

“If they’ve got seven days a week at one terminal and they’re only using three, maybe four days, that’s not high utilization,” Murray said. “Yet, it’s a facility that we’ve got blocked out that we’re not getting any benefit from it for the investment we’ve made.”

He notes Cruise Terminal 10, which gets used by three brands, gets used six days a week.

Murray said with newer and bigger ships on order from all the major lines, the demand is just going to continue to spike for parking space at Florida’s big three ports.

“I think the point now for all of the major brands is finding somewhere to operate,” Murray said. “Because there’s only Miami — we all know how full Miami is; Everglades — it’s got limited capacity or opportunity for growth; and we have more land, but you know, it’s not all going to get committed to the cruise industry.

“So the question is, how do we allow more opportunities for the cruise lines to operate? This is one — get high utilization out of the terminal.”

11 Reason To Sail on Cruises From Galveston

I n no uncertain terms, a cruise port makes all the difference regarding your entire vacation. After all, the location of your departure sets the tone for your trip moving forward, determining which destinations you’ll reach once you’re on the high seas.

While specific destinations like Miami or Canaveral boast unique strengths, something might also be said for the Port of Galveston, Texas. A smaller port overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, Galveston may not be the largest or busiest destination from which to depart. Yet, there are plenty of amicable reasons to look into this idyllic Texan island for your next cruise-going experience.

1. Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Disney Offer Cruises From Galveston

Looking at it plainly, Galveston has three cruise terminals making up its port. In contrast, far larger alternatives, like the Port of Miami, have eleven terminals. Because of this, Galveston unfortunately cannot house many of the industry’s prestigious cruise lines. However, the port’s terminals support several large-scale cruise corporations, with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, and Disney Cruises departing from Galveston regularly.

2. The Nearby Cruise Destinations Are Well Worth It

Admittedly, inevitable drawbacks are attached to cruises from Galveston. Considering how much farther west it is than ports in Florida or along the East Coast, most cruise lines out of Galveston cannot travel to their company’s private islands as many are in the Eastern Caribbean. However, Galveston’s location along the Gulf of Mexico has its distinct perks, including ready access to the Western Caribbean and parts of South and Central America. Though some guests might regret losing a chance at CocoCay, it’s hard to be upset when trekking along the shores of Mexico, Honduras, or Belize.

3. It’s Easier To Navigate Than Larger Ports

There’s no simple answer when it comes to determining the total cost of cruises from Galveston over any other port in the U.S. Like most ports, the final cost of the cruise depends on numerous factors, including the time of year you’re sailing, the location of your cabin, and the cruise line you plan on traveling with. However, the convenience of navigating the port itself makes Galveston a perfect option for anyone new to cruise vacations. Avoiding the large-scale crowds and tedious boarding lines as other major ports, Galveston remains a hassle-free destination for most novice travelers out there.

4. galveston is conveniently located in the central u.s..

Given Galveston’s distinct location in eastern Texas , it’s one of the most readily accessible ports for travelers across the U.S. Located in the heart of America, travelers from the Western U.S. will have just as easy time reaching it as vacationers from the Midwest or East Coast. After all, who wants to sit on a lengthy plane ride to reach their port of call? Also, Galveston lacks the same high value of traffic as Miami or other popular ports, making it relatively hassle-free to reach.

5. The Port Terminal Is Reasonably Close to the Airport

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport is the closest airport to Galveston. Roughly 41 miles northwest of the port, travelers can easily navigate from the airport to their cruise terminal in under an hour. Galveston is also close to several major cities, making it an option, albeit a farther one, for anyone flying into Austin or Dallas. However, given Houston’s short driving distance to Galveston, William P. Hobby Airport is your best bet for air travel.

6. The Boarding Process Is Quick and Seamless

As mentioned above, Galveston doesn’t have the same volume of passengers flooding through its port as Miami, Canaveral, or Port Everglades. As a result, boarding a ship is comparatively tamer—especially since the port opened up its third and latest terminal in 2022. Having been constructed in the past two decades and carefully refurbished, these terminals are in fantastic shape, making the onboarding process much more efficient for vacationers. The terminals also come equipped with innovative new features, with Terminal 3 offering mobile check-in and state-of-the-art facial recognition devices.

7. There Are Plenty of Hotels Nearby

Another notable feature of Galveston is the number of hotels near the port. (Because let’s face it: what’s more accessible than simply waking up, hopping in your car, and practically walking onto the ship without worrying about losing track of time?) What’s more, many of the hotels in the Galveston area have special offers for anyone traveling onboard a cruise ship. These offers include free or discounted parking rates and a helpful shuttle that ferry passengers back and forth from the hotel to the ship. While several hotels in Galveston have these amenities, some of the best include the Hilton Galveston Island Resort and the San Luis Resort .

8. Parking Is Easy

Don’t let Galveston’s size fool you—the port itself has plenty of options when it comes to parking. As previously suggested, anyone staying at a nearby hotel might want to consider leaving their car parked there and taking a shuttle, taxi, or Uber over to their terminal. Additionally, travelers can reserve a space in the port’s parking lot ahead of their trip. These parking spaces are safe and secure, and port employees will assist with any luggage brought aboard on cruises from Galveston.

9. Galveston Itself Is a Beautiful Place To Visit

The main reason we believe you should depart from Galveston on your next cruise is the opportunity you’ll have to see what it has to offer. Like most major cities, there’s plenty to do and see around town, with every prospective sight catering to travelers’ interests. For those interested in shopping, the Strand Historical District has plenty of independently owned stores that feature everything from odd tchotchkes to essential beach items. Galveston’s famous Moody Gardens is an educational park built around natural wonders such as exotic sea life, immaculate flowers, roaming monkeys, and sloths.

10. You’re Bound To Find Some Great Last-Minute Deals

As previously mentioned, Galveston is a more scaled-down port than Miami or Port Canaveral, but its three terminals still receive cruise ships constantly. Because of this constantly moving schedule, most travelers will find it incredibly easy to find last-minute deals on select cruises from Galveston—often days before the ship is booked to leave. Sure, it may not be practical for those traveling from longer distances to book something last-minute. Yet these last-minute deals are well worth it for anyone within a short distance of Galveston.

11. Galveston Is Steeped in Rich Maritime History

Galveston is a city rich in history, having first been settled by Indigenous Natives of the Akokisa and Karankawa tribes before the Europeans arrived in the 1600s. Over the next several centuries, Galveston became a hub for maritime trade, eventually attracting such notable figures as French buccaneer Jean Lafitte. All that being said, history buffs will delight at the chance to visit Galveston, taking in some of the numerous historical sights around town—like Lafitte’s personal hideaway at Maison Rouge or the Michael B. Menard House, named after one of Galveston’s original American settlers. Even those who don’t care for history will find these areas fascinating.
