Travelex Insurance Services offers six types of travel insurance plans. There are three types of comprehensive plans, two flight plan options and a post-departure plan. Its policies are underwritten by Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company and Zurich Insurance Group.

Travelex’s primary goal is to provide travel insurance protection that’s personalized to the type of trip you’re taking and the style of traveler you are. And regardless of which plan you choose, you’ll always have 24/7 access to travel assistance.

In addition to offering plans with primary coverage, some plans let you choose optional coverage add-ons or enhancements to offer you more peace of mind.

The three comprehensive plans from Travelex are Travel Select, Travel Basic and Travel America.

Travel Select

The Travel Select plan provides travelers with the most comprehensive primary coverage option across Travelex Insurance Services’ suite of plans. Its primary coverage:

Applies to domestic and international trips.

Requires no deductible.

Allows a pre-existing condition waiver if you purchase your Travel Select plan within 15 days of your first trip payment.

You can also choose optional coverage upgrades, like:

Cancel for Any Reason protection.

Accidental death & dismemberment common carrier coverage.

Adventure sports coverage.

Additional medical coverage.

Car rental collision coverage.

It also includes coverage for kids, ages 17 years old and under, who are traveling with you.

Travel Basic

If you’re traveling on a budget, Travelex Insurance Services’ Travel Basic plan offers an option with lower maximum coverages and a lower cost. Its emergency medical expenses coverage, for example, covers up to $15,000 while the Travel Select plan provides up to $50,000 in coverage. However, Travel Basic doesn’t offer coverage for kid companions and doesn’t offer an exclusion waiver for pre-existing conditions.

Travel America

For travelers exploring the U.S., Travelex’s Travel America plan provides various trip coverages with limits that can be split among the primary policyholder and up to seven additional companion travelers. It covers U.S. trips that are up to 14 days in duration. Your destination must also be at least 100 miles away from where you live.

This plan allows pre-existing medical condition coverage as long as your plan is purchased within three days of making the last payment for your trip.

If you don’t need or want insurance for pre-purchases during your trip, but want protection relating to your flights, Travelex offers two types of flight insurance:

Flight Insure. Includes trip delay coverage and 24/7 travel assistance.

Flight Insure Plus. Includes features of Flight Insure, plus:

Emergency medical and dental coverage.

Emergency transportation.

Baggage loss/damage.

Baggage delay.

These plans can be purchased as standalone protection. Neither of Travelex’s flight insurance plans offer exclusion waivers for pre-existing conditions.

Travelex travel medical plan

The Travel Med plan offers post-departure coverages, like emergency medical, AD&D and more. It’s available for domestic and international travel, and can be purchased at the last minute. The plan also covers up to 10 travelers.

Costs vary for most Travelex insurance plans based on your age, length of trip, cost of trip and state of residence.

As an example, we looked at a one-week trip to Italy in March for a 40-year-old traveler from Texas. Here is what they would pay for a Travelex plan:

$66 for Travel Basic.

$93 for Travel Select.

$41 for a post-departure Travel Medical plan.

$17 for Flight Insure.

$39 for Flight Insure Plus.

Since the Travel America plan option is expressly for domestic trips and doesn't offer add-on upgrade options, the plan costs a flat $60.

When deciding which Travelex Insurance Services plan is right for your upcoming trip, consider the insurance coverages you already have through other sources, like your credit card , directly through your airline carrier and other sources. Also, review the coverage limits of those alternative insurance sources to find gaps or lack of coverage for certain details of your trip.

For example, if your credit card only covers trip interruption and trip delays, but you’re traveling with your kids, you might want to have emergency medical and dental coverage for them.

Departure and return dates.

Date of your first trip payment.

State you reside in.

Trip cost for one traveler.

Then, select the type of plan you want. Choose your preferred upgrades, if desired, and enter your basic information (name, birth date, address, email, etc.), travel carrier, cruise line or tour operator and proceed to payment.

  • Post-departure trip interruption — covers you up to the original cost of your trip, when you must interrupt your trip or return home early for covered reasons, such as sickness, injury or other covered reasons.
  • Travel delay — pays up to $100 per day for meals and accommodations when you are delayed on your trip for 12 hours or more.
  • Baggage delay — reimburses you up to $250 for clothing and personal items if your luggage is delayed more than 24 hours.
  • Loss or damage to baggage or personal effects — covers up to $2,500 for loss or damage to baggage or personal effects that occur during the trip.

Lowest Price Guarantee (Provided by Delta Vacations)

If Delta Vacations advertises an identical vacation at a lower price, Delta Vacations will guarantee that price. The advertised vacation must be available and include the same air components (including air fare class), hotel and room category, and any other previously purchased components, including the Travel Protection Plan PLUS. Refunds for the difference in the package price will be issued in the original form of payment.

Below, you'll find information on how to request the lowest price guarantee along with lowest price guarantee terms and conditions.

To request the Lowest Price Guarantee 10 days or more before departure:

  • Create a new reservation with lower price and place on hold.
  • Note: Some reservations may require confirmation with a credit card.
  • Contact Delta Vacations at 1-800-800-1504, 6:00 am - 11:00 pm CST.
  • If the new reservation qualifies, the travelers will receive confirmation of the new reservation at the adjusted price. Previous reservation will be refunded to the original form of payment.

To request the Lowest Price Guarantee within 10 days of departure:

  • Create a new reservation and confirm with credit card.

Travel Protection PLUS and Lowest Price Guarantee Terms and Conditions

  • The Travel Protection Plan PLUS cannot be applied to Miles to Go or upgraded bookings.
  • Lowest Price Guarantee is on the total package price, not component to component.
  • All components must be available at the time of the new reservation.
  • Lowest price guarantee must be on the exact same vacation package including the same dates, air components, hotel and room category, and any other previously purchased components, including the Travel Protection Plan PLUS.
  • Lowest price guarantee is allowed to be used only one time per booking, and may be exercised up to the time of departure.
  • Promotional codes applied to the original reservation must be valid at the time of the lowest price guarantee request to maintain promotional code discount. If the promotional code is no longer valid, a new promotional code can be applied, as long as all terms and conditions are met.

Travel Protection Plan Travel Certificate Redemption Terms and Conditions

Redemption Instructions

  • Contact Delta Vacations at 1-800-800-1504 or online at delta.com/vacations.
  • Enter/provide the 12-digit travel certificate number printed on the front of the travel certificate document during the payment step.
  • Provide additional form of payment, if necessary.
  • Delta Vacations will issue and send your travel documents via the delivery method requested during the booking process.

Redemption Terms and Conditions

  • Travel certificate is valid for the value indicated on the front of the travel certificate document when redeemed toward the purchase of any Delta Vacations air and hotel package; air, hotel and car package; hotel-only; or hotel and car or ground transportation package purchase.
  • Travel certificate can be redeemed in its entirety or in increments up to the value or balance remaining on the certificate.
  • If the price of the booking is more than the value of the travel certificate, an additional form of payment for the remaining balance will be necessary to complete the transaction.
  • Travel documents for the redeemed travel certificate will be issued, and sent via the delivery method identified during the booking process.
  • Purchases with this travel certificate will be deducted from the balance until the value reaches zero or until the expiration date is reached, whichever occurs first.

Already abroad? Did you realize you left without travel insurance? Or did you forget to renew your travel insurance? Finding travel insurance after departure can be tricky.

Many travel insurance companies don’t allow you to buy insurance once you have left. We found two companies that allow you to buy insurance after departure. 

Note that there are more than two, but most companies are restricted to a region, and since you guys come from different countries, I thought I should focus on the global ones.

In this guide, we’ll talk about SafetyWing, Genki, and Heymondo.

Traveler with insurance

Buying post-departure travel insurance could not be any easier with SafetyWing .

In fact, if you are from Canada, Australia, or the states of Washington, Maryland, or New York; you can ONLY purchase SafetyWing Insurance after you have left the country.

As I said, many companies don’t allow you to purchase insurance after departure.

How Much Does It Cost? 

SafetyWing medical insurance starts at $45.08 for 4 weeks(28 days), and you can either put an end date on your coverage OR subscribe for automatic monthly renewals so that you won’t go a day without your insurance.

Children under the age of 10 can be added to a group plan for free (limited to 2 children per group).

You may cancel your vacation for ANY reason up to two hours prior to scheduled departure 2 and receive a full refund for your vacation, less the cost of the Travel Protection Plan-including nonrefundable airfare booked through ALG Vacations brands. Lowest Price Guarantee

Hurricane Travel Credit

Making Changes to Your Trip

No penalties.

For changes to bookings where no penalties were assessed, your TPP benefits are considered unused in the first instance and can be moved to a revised reservation without a reactivation fee.

Penalties Applied

For changes to bookings with Travel Protection Plus where penalties were assessed, the penalties are covered but a plan reactivation fee (75% of the original price) applies if you wish to have TPP coverage on the revised booking.

Rebooking a Vacation

If a canceled reservation is rebooked within 7 days, brand penalties will be waived; however, supplier penalties may apply. The plan reimburses you up to $1,000 for unused land or water arrangements and additional transportation should you miss your Cruise or tour departure due to a delay of at least 3* hours due to a covered reason, such as a flight delay from adverse weather.

: Reimburses you up to $1,000 per person for expenses such as meals, lodging, and local transportation costs should you be delayed 6* or more hours due to a covered event, such as a Common Carrier Delay, lost or stolen passport or other covered events.

Baggage Delay

With TPP, you'll be reimbursed for the purchase of necessary personal items if your bags are delayed by the airline for 6* hours or longer. The plan covers you for the purchase of necessary items up to $300 in the event your luggage is delayed by a common carrier for more than 6* hours en route to your vacation.

Baggage & Personal Property Protection

The plan reimburses you for baggage or items lost, stolen, or damaged during your vacation.

Trip Interruption

Reimburses (up to the total trip cost) unused hotel arrangements plus additional transportation costs such as a new airline ticket if you can't travel due to circumstances such as illness or injury to you, a family member, or traveling companion, jury duty, or a traffic accident on the way to the airport.

Emergency Evacuation

The nonrefundable During Travel Protection option provides the same benefits of the Travel Protection Plus post-departure plan. It does not include the pre-departure penalty waiver. This option can be added up to 2 days prior to departure and since it does not provide the full benefits of Travel Protection Plus, it has a lower price. This is a great option for last-minute type reservations that no longer qualify for the Travel Protection Plus option which must be added within 7 days after the initial deposit.

All brand-imposed revision fees are waived and are available for unlimited use so long as Travel Protection Plus remains on the reservation. Canceling or changing the vacation at any time before departure without costly revision fees does not include nonrefundable properties. Supplier-imposed fees such as airline/hotel revision penalties will be covered for the first revision instance. If used to cover supplier-imposed fees, Travel Protection Plus will need to be reapplied to the reservation at 75% of the original price in order to maintain the program benefits or the traveler is subject to any subsequent revision or cancellation fees. A lap child under the age of 2 who shares a seat with an adult is covered under the adult's policy.

3 Travel credits are valid for travel commencing within 395 days from the original departure date. Travel credits are nonrefundable, nontransferable, not redeemable for cash, and must be used for travel commencing by the expiration date. Travel credit will be issued in the names of the adult (18+) passengers on the original reservation. Travel credit must be applied to the same ALG Vacations ® brand as the original booking.

4 The Price Guarantee: If the brand's price of the hotel goes down after the booking is made, simply contact ALG Vacations or your travel agent and we will adjust the reservation to the lower price. Lower price adjustments are not automatic and will be done only if requested through Customer Care at 800-558-3060 or your travel advisor. For land-only or scheduled air bookings, the Price Guarantee applies only to the hotel portion of the booking. For Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flight packages, the Price Guarantee applies to the air and hotel portion of the booking. 5 The Hurricane Travel Credit applies for vacations departing June through November. While in destination, if the trip is interrupted for 24 hours or more due to a Category One or greater hurricane, you will receive a refund for unused or interrupted vacation nights plus a "Fresh Start" certificate for a future vacation. Fresh Start certificate amounts: $100 per adult and $50 per child for Exclusive Nonstop Vacation Flights, and $25 per person for scheduled air vacations. Much has changed in the travel insurance industry over the past 10 years. More travelers are purchasing insurance than in years past and, in a risk-laden travel landscape, the demand for trip protection is on the rise . Though the UStiA study suggests Trip Cancellation was once a more widely-known travel protection coverage, many standard travel insurance plans have always included, and continue to include, a number of perhaps lesser-known post-departure coverages that take effect when your clients begin their scheduled trip.

Helping your clients familiarize themselves with these valuable components of a protection plan could help reveal the product’s overall value and also help them decide if insuring their next trip is the right choice for them.

What Post-Departure Coverages Do

Post-departure coverages are designed to reimburse your clients for specific financial losses that they might suffer as a result of travel misfortune. Unlike Trip Cancellation, the post departure coverages don’t take effect until they begin their trip. Many plans include a variety of post-departure coverages and depending on the plan they purchase, multiple coverages could be of use to them if they encounter an unexpected event that interrupts their vacation.

For instance, say one of your clients is out sight-seeing on the second day of a long-awaited family tour package when, the next thing he knows, an extra step backwards to capture the perfect photograph sends him tumbling down an unfamiliar set of stairs. A hurried visit to the nearest Emergency Room (which happens to be by no means “near” his original hotel booking) results in a fractured ankle, a string of medical bills for out-of-network medical treatment, the family’s overnight stay at a hotel near the ER, and a now useless—and completely non-refundable—tour package because it’s medically necessary for him to return home.

In this scenario, Medical and Dental, Travel Delay, and Trip Interruption are three post-departure coverages that could potentially help your client recoup his losses. In addition to seeking reimbursement for the out-of-network emergency room bills that his primary insurance provider may not cover, he can also claim compensation for lodging, meals, local transportation, and telephone calls while he’s delayed; the unused, prepaid portion of his tour package; and even additional transportation costs to return home early. Provided your client insured the entire family’s arrangements when he bought his plan, your client and his family could all return home together and claim for the full remainder of the pre-paid family trip while limiting the stress of having to give up their vacation with no opportunity for reimbursement. Like Trip Cancellation, post-departure coverages are intended to make travelers “whole” again after suffering losses resulting from a listed covered event, like an unexpected injury.

Generally speaking, Medical and Dental typically provides coverage for physician-ordered medical services varying from prescription drugs and medicines to local ambulance services if your clients get sick or injured while on their trip, while Travel Delay aims to reimburse for reasonable additional expenses like lodging, meals, and local transportation while they’re delayed. Trip Interruption provides reimbursement for the prepaid nonrefundable portion of their trip that they had to forfeit due to the unexpected interruption as well as additional transportation costs that they had to pay to return home early or rejoin the rest of their travel party.

But these are just three of several post-departure coverages included with many standard travel insurance plans. Others include Baggage Coverage, Baggage Delay, Emergency Assistance and Transportation, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Missed Connection, and even Rental Car Damage Coverage.

The only already abroad travel insurance sales that we can make after you have left the UK (or EU) are the Single Trip Short Stay and Single Trip Long Stay versions of the Navigator Silver, Navigator Gold, and Navigator Diamond policies. This doesn’t apply to the Annual Multi-Trip option offered on these policies.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN PURCHASING POST-DEPARTURE TRAVEL INSURANCE IN THE UK

Whilst we do offer travel insurance for already travelling individuals on our aforementioned policies, several considerations need to be made before choosing the right policy for you:

THERE IS A 25% SUPPLEMENT FOR AFTER-DEPARTURE POLICIES

With our post-departure travel insurance policies, a 25% supplement will be added on top of the usual travel insurance policy fees. This will be applied automatically when you select “After-departure cover” on the options page of our website. We cannot offer cover if you are currently in a country against the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development (FCDO) advice.

In the UK, you must consider the UK’s FCDO advice before you choose to travel to any destination. If the FCDO has travel advice in place which states that it “advises against all or all but essential travel”, our post-departure travel insurance policies are not valid. This same condition applies to many travel insurance policies from other providers.

HOW TO PURCHASE OUR AFTER-DEPARTURE TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICIES

When you’re purchasing our travel insurance policies,  you will be offered a tick box option for “already departed cover”. You must tick this box to gain travel insurance whilst already travelling. When you tick this box, it will automatically increase the cost by 25%, which is the after-departure supplement that we previously mentioned. 

If you are not offered this tick box option for “already departed cover”, you are not buying the right policy and it will be invalid. Navigator Silver, Navigator Gold, and Navigator Diamond Single Trip or Long Stay travel insurance policies are the only policies that will offer you this tick box and therefore offer you cover when you’re already travelling.

ANNUAL MULTI-TRIP POLICIES ARE INVALID IF PURCHASED AFTER DEPARTURE

If you are buying post-departure travel insurance online, you will be offered Annual Multi-Trip, Single Trip, and Long Stay policies to choose from. As previously mentioned, ignore the Annual Multi-Trip policy option as these can’t be purchased after departure. 

Travel insurance policies issued after departure always exclude any claim that arises from any situation such as illness, theft, or otherwise that predates the date of inception of the policy. This seems obvious, but it is emphasised to ensure that it is understood that insurance cannot be arranged retrospectively or backdated in any way, and claims will not be considered if the incident or illness giving rise to the claim predates the policy issue.   

POST DEPARTURE TRAVEL INSURANCE DURATIONS

The already travelling insurance policy that you buy must match the overall duration of the trip that you are on. The Single Trip option is only for trips that do not exceed 62 days from the date that you left home. If your overall trip is going to be longer than 62 days from the date that you left home, you must select our Long Stay policy option, otherwise, the policy will not be valid.

ALREADY DEPARTED TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER: THE CONDITIONS

There are some conditions that you need to be conscious of when booking your post-departure travel insurance policy. When ticking the “already departed cover” box before buying your chosen policy, you are accepting the following special conditions for policies commenced after departure from the UK or your country of residence in the EU/EEA. Please read these conditions very carefully and make sure that you are aware of the implications:

  • Already abroad travel Insurance cannot be assigned a start date that is the same day that you purchased the policy, it must be dated for the next day or later. 
  • If there has been a gap of more than seven days in which you have been uninsured between the expiry of your last policy (if applicable) and the start of your chosen already travelling travel insurance, there will be a 14-day waiting period for the start of your illness cover.  However, this 14-day period starts counting from the day you buy the policy (the issue date). this means that if you can buy it 14 days before you need cover to start, the 14 days will have lapsed by the time you need the medical cover. This delay does not apply to accident or injury cover, but only illness cover. This condition will not apply if there has been no gap between your previous cover and this one, or the gap is not more than seven days. It will also not apply if you only left the UK in the last seven days.
  • Policies started after departure will not cover claims arising from any known situation, including pre-existing medical conditions. There are no exceptions to this condition for our already travelling insurance policies.
  • By purchasing post-departure travel insurance with us, you are agreeing that you are not aware of any circumstances that are likely to give rise to a claim.
  •  The 14-day ‘cooling-off period’ that we offer for our immediate travel insurance does not apply to policies that start after departure. So, once you have purchased this policy it is non-refundable.
  • The Navigator Silver, Navigator Gold, and Navigator Diamond policies are only available to people who are normal residents of the UK or EU. If your normal place of residence is not in the UK or EU, you cannot use these policies.  Residents of some other countries may be able to use our Global Voyager policies as these can also be started after departure with the same conditions, but are available to residents of many more countries.
  • The overall period of your trip outside of your home country must not exceed the policy maximum for your age, including any period of insurance under this policy. In the event of a claim, you will be required to provide evidence of the day you first left your home country. Maximum overall durations for ages are as follows:
  • Ages 18-59: 18 months
  • Ages 60-74 (Anywhere): 62 days
  • Ages 75-84 (Europe): 62 days
  • Ages 75-84 (Worldwide): 31 days
  • Ages 85 or over (Anywhere): 31 days

These are the maximum overall durations from when you left your home country until your return home. We cannot issue cover if your overall duration away from home will be longer than the above limits.

In this situation, you are no longer considered to be travelling, you are living abroad.

HOW TO EXTEND YOUR EXISTING POLICY

If the travel insurance policy that you left the UK with has lapsed because you forgot to extend it, or because the insurer will not extend durations, we may be able to help. Although, this will depend on how long you have been out of the UK in total.

It is quite common for people to inadvertently take out unsuitable policies. For instance, you may have left the UK on a long-stay trip with an Annual Multi-Trip policy, not realising that the maximum duration for an individual trip on one of these is 31 or 45 days. We can often help in these circumstances.

We often get requests from people who have been working temporarily overseas and are insured by their employer or by organisations such as BUNAC. At the end of their work period, they decide to go off travelling independently before returning to the UK and find that the insurer who has been covering them cannot extend cover once their employment contract is over. When Is The Best Time To Buy Travel Insurance?

For any destination around the world, type of trip, and duration of time that you will be travelling for, the best time to purchase a travel insurance policy is as soon as possible after booking your trip, if not at the same time. 

This advice also applies if you purchase your travel insurance when you’re already abroad. The sooner you buy travel insurance when already overseas, the sooner you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you are covered in the event of an injury, accident, or emergency. 

Can I Buy Travel Insurance At The Airport?

Given the terms and conditions of our travel insurance when already abroad policies, it is possible to purchase travel insurance at the airport. If you purchase our policy online or over the phone, you may be able to secure the appropriate cover for you just before you board a flight or after you’ve landed. But, as previously stated, this will depend on specific conditions and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 

For other insurance providers, the cut-off points can vary for providing travel insurance to travellers. For example,  if you’ve gone through customs, you may not be able to receive cover for your trip.  

How Long Does It Take To Get Travel Insurance?

It’s possible to get travel insurance last minute to ensure that you receive the cover you need whilst travelling as soon as possible. Although, there’s always a chance that when you purchase your travel insurance policy you may encounter delays in your policy providing you with cover. This applies in the case of our travel insurance whilst already abroad policies, as it can take 14 days to offer you illness cover, as mentioned in this article. 

What Does Last-minute Travel Insurance Cover Me For? 

Much like any travel insurance policy, a plan purchased last-minute will typically protect you in the case of medical emergencies and injuries; unexpected events which cause delay; cancellation;  repatriation; and lost, damaged, or stolen luggage. 

It is possible to purchase travel insurance after departure last minute, and the cover that you will be offered will encompass the aforementioned factors. 

When Does Travel Insurance Start and End?

Normally, you can arrange for the exact date that your travel insurance starts to align with when your trip abroad begins. You can also assign the date for your arrival back home to be the end date of your travel insurance policy. 

However, in the case that you purchase travel insurance when already abroad, your travel insurance will start the day after or further in the future from when you purchased the policy. Do I need emergency medical travel insurance for a U.S. trip?

That depends. If you have a good health insurance plan, you may not need emergency medical insurance while traveling within the U.S.

However, it’s still a good idea! Allianz Travel Insurance’s emergency medical benefits have a few advantages your regular health insurance may not provide:

  • There’s no deductible or copay for covered emergency medical expenses. (There is, however, a maximum limit for your emergency medical/dental and emergency transportation benefits, which you’ll find in your plan documents.)
  • Depending on the plan you choose, your travel medical insurance may be primary That means it pays your covered medical expenses before any other insurance coverage applies.
  • Emergency medical transportation benefits can cover medically necessary medical evacuations. This is a must if you’re traveling to any remote locations—such as fishing in Alaska, or backcountry camping in a national park.
  • Your travel insurance also can cover special medical transportation home after an emergency. Your regular insurance may not.

Do I need emergency medical travel insurance if I’m healthy?

Yes! We get more than 4,000 calls each year from travelers who need help with a medical emergency. The most common emergencies we see are things that can happen to anyone, even people who are generally healthy and fit: fractures from falls ; trauma (often from motor vehicle accidents); cardiovascular problems , such as a heart attack or stroke; and pulmonary/respiratory problems , such as a collapsed lung.

Active travelers especially need travel medical insurance, if you plan to participate in activities such as hiking, cycling, skiing, horseback riding, etc. on your trip. Just make sure you read the exclusions in your plan. Certain high-risk activities are excluded from coverage.

Do I need to buy emergency medical travel insurance for my kids?

Yes! Children aren’t immune from medical emergencies while traveling, whether a tummy bug or a fractured wrist. Luckily, two of our plans offer free coverage* for children 17 and under when traveling with a parent or grandparent: OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier , which doubles most OneTrip Prime post-departure benefit limits (*not available on policies issued to Pennsylvania residents).

Can emergency medical travel insurance cover my pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, but you have to make sure your plan includes the existing medical condition waiver and meets all the requirements. If you insure your full nonrefundable trip costs within 14 days of paying your first trip deposit, and you’re medically able to travel when you do so, you can be covered for most existing medical conditions.

An existing medical condition is defined as an injury, illness, or medical condition that, within the 120 days prior to and including the policy purchase date:

  • Caused a person to seek medical examination, diagnosis, care, or treatment by a doctor;
  • Presented symptoms; or
  • Required a person to take medication prescribed by a doctor (unless the condition or symptoms are controlled by that prescription, and the prescription has not changed).

The illness, injury, or medical condition does not need to be formally diagnosed in order to be considered a pre-existing medical condition.

What happens if I have an emergency while traveling somewhere without high-quality medical facilities?

In situations like these, your emergency transportation benefits can be life-saving. If you suffer a serious illness or injury on your trip and the local medical facilities can’t provide the medical treatment you need, our medical team will arrange and pay to transport you to the closest appropriate facility. Please note, however, that we must make the medical evacuation arrangements — if you do it yourself, your insurance may not pay for it.
