What is the newest Princess Cruises ship? If you're in the market for a Princess cruise, it's something worth knowing.

The newest Princess cruise ship is typically also the Princess ship with the most up-to-date restaurants, bars, attractions and cabins. It's the one to choose if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Princess cruise vacation.

As of this year, the newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. It sailed on its maiden voyage in March 2022.

That said, Discovery Princess soon will be supplanted as the newest Princess Cruises vessel by Sun Princess — the first of a new class of vessels for the line. Sun Princess begins sailing in February 2024.

Other relatively new Princess ships include Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess and Majestic Princess. All began sailing in the last six years.

In all, Princess Cruises operates 15 vessels. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two years or so, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them. The oldest Princess Cruises ship, Grand Princess, is 25 years old.

In general, Princess Cruises' newest ships are bigger and more venue-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of options for restaurants, bars and pool areas for your Princess cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to vessels built in the last 10 or so years.

The oldest Princess cruise ships — those built in the late 1990s and early 2000s — can be as much as 30% smaller than the line's newest vessels.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship?

The newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. As noted above, it debuted in March 2022.

Measuring 145,000 gross tons, Discovery Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than many older Princess ships.

Discovery Princess is part of Princess Cruises' six-ship Royal class of vessels, which is comprised of bigger ships than the line's earlier classes of vessels. The Royal class began debuting in 2013 and also includes Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.

What is the oldest Princess cruise ship?

The oldest Princess cruise ship is Grand Princess. Unveiled way back in 1998, it's the namesake vessel for the line's Grand class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.

There are seven Grand-class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand-class vessels are smaller than the Royal-class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Royal-class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren't as accessible to the bigger ships.

Still, the Grand-class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy.

What new Princess cruise ships are coming?

Princess currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. As noted above, it's the first of all-new Sphere-class series of vessels for the line that, as of now, will be made up of two ships (Princess could order more Sun-class ships in coming years — we'll see).

The second ship in the Sphere-class series, to be called Star Princess, is due to begin sailing in 2025.

The Sphere-class vessels are being built at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard. They include The Dome, a glass dome-covered pool area with tiers of seating facing the bow that will turn into a nighttime entertainment zone with a stage at night.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship available for booking?

Sun Princess is the newest Princess cruise ship you can book right now. While the vessel isn't yet in operation, its initial sailings scheduled for February 2024 already are on sale, as are future voyages through March 2025. The one other Princess ship on order, Star Princess, has yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of Princess cruise ships?

The Sphere class is the newest class of Princess ships. It'll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024.

At 175,500 tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet — a significant jump in size for the line. And yet, while it's 21% bigger, it's designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess hopes to draw more upmarket travelers.

In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.

What's the difference between newer and older Princess ships?

Newer Princess ships generally are bigger than older Princess ships and thus have more and bigger onboard venues than the line's older vessels.

On the newest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess' oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess Cruises but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess.

Note that all Princess Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Princess vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

For example, she says, travelers sailing with younger children will especially love Royal Princess and Regal Princess , which “have even more to offer” beyond the kids club, such as “outdoor play areas with jungle gyms and a separate teen space with a hot tub.” Meanwhile, says Boose, cruisers craving an intimate onboard experience may consider sailing aboard Coral Princess or Island Princess , which are two of the line’s smaller ships.

The inaugural ship in Princess' new Sphere class, Sun Princess is the line's largest — and flashiest — vessel to date. Passengers can also perfect their swing at the putting course, enjoy poolside movie screenings, unwind at one of several swanky bars and lounges, including the Speakeasy Cigar Lounge, hit the spa, or dance the night away at the onboard club. Crown Princess

Inaugural Year: 2006

Despite its 3,000-plus passenger capacity , Crown Princess never feels super crowded thanks to abundant onboard amenities and activities. Highlights include three main dining rooms, a three-story atrium, and, of course, ample activities and programming, which run the gamut from basketball courts and pajama movie nights for kids to karaoke and an onboard nightclub.

Diamond Princess

Ship Capacity: 2,670 guests 

Best known for its Asia itineraries, Diamond Princess is sure to wow cruisers of all ages with its unique onboard features. Coral Princess

Coral Princess is Princess’ smallest ship; however, there is still plenty to see, do, and experience on board. Guests can make themselves right at home in the piazza-style grand atrium, where prime people-watching awaits. For some R&R, grown-ups can head to the tranquil, adults-only Sanctuary while the kids are at play at the children’s centers.

Star Princess will be the second ship in the Sun Class and will make her debut in 2025. She is actually the third ship to the hold the Star Princess name and will be the second Princess Cruises ship that will be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). Sun Princess – 2024 *

Discovery Princess – 2022

Discovery Princess is the sixth and final Royal Class of ship to be built for the Princess Cruises fleet. She has a passenger capacity of 3,660 (based on two per cabin) and entered service on March 27, 2022. The ship was named by Godparents Randy Fenoli , Alex Guarnaschelli, Adam Savage and Page Turner.

Enchanted Princess – 2021

Enchanted Princess is the fifth Royal Class ship by Princess Cruises and entered service on November 10, 2021. She carries 3,660 passengers (based on two per cabin). The ship was named by Godparents Captain Lynn Danaher, Dr. Vicki Ferrini, and Jenifer Austin.

Sky Princess – 2019

Sky Princess is the fourth ship in Princess Cruises popular Royal Class of ships and began service in February of 2019. The ship carries 3,660 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was named by Godparents who happen to be two notable women of NASA, Captain Kay Hire and Engineer Poppy Northcutt on December 7, 2019 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

Majestic Princess – 2017

Majestic Princess is the third Royal Class ship and began service in March of 2017. The ship carries 3,560 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was named by Godparents Yao Ming and his wife, Ye Li on July 9, 2017 in Shanghai, China.

Regal Princess – 2014

Regal Princess is the second Royal Class ship and began service in 2014. The ship carries 3,560 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was named by Godparents Fred Grandy, Bernie Kopell, Ted Lange, Gavin McLeod, Cynthia Lauren Tewes, Jill Whelan (Cast of “The Love Boat” ) on November 5, 2014 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Royal Princess – 2013

Royal Princess is the first Royal Class ship, but is the third Princess ship to have been given the Royal Princess name. The ship carries 3,560 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was named by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge on June 13, 2013 in Southampton, UK.

Ruby Princess – 2008

Ruby Princess is a Crown Class ship and began service on in November of 2008. The ship carries 3,080 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was christened by Godparents Trista and Ryan Sutter (Stars of the “The Bachelorette”) on November 6, 2008 in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Emerald Princess – 2007

Emerald Princess is a  Crown Class  cruise and begand service in April 2007. The ship carries 3,080 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was christened by Godparents Florence Henderson, Marion Ross, Erin Moran, Susan Olsen (Cast of “The Brady Bunch” and “Happy Days”) on May 13, 2007 in Athens (Piraeus), Greece.

Crown Princess – 2006

Crown Princess is a  Crown -class   cruise ship  and begand service in June of 2006. The ship carries 3,080 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was christened by Godmother Martha Stewart.

Diamond Princess – 2004

Diamond Princess began operation in March 2004 and is a subclassed  Grand -class  ship, which is also known as a  Gem -class ship. The ship carries 2,670 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was christened by Godmother Yoshiko Tsukuda (wife of Kazuo Tsukuda, president of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) on February 26, 2004 in Nagasaki, Japan. Both Diamond Princess  and  Sapphire Princess  were built in  Nagasaki, Japan , by  Mitsubishi Industries .

Caribbean Princess – 2004

Caribbean Princess modified  Grand -class  cruise ship and was launched in April of 2004. The ship carries an impressive 3,149 passengers (based on two per cabin). Caribbean Princess  is larger than the other ships in her class ( Grand Princess ), due to an additional deck of cabins called the “Riviera” deck She also was initially designed to cruise the  Caribbean  year-round, so she was not given a sliding roof over the pool area for shelter in poor weather. She was christened by Godmother actress Jill Whelan (“Vicki” on “The Love Boat”) on April 2, 2004 in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Sapphire Princess – 2004

Sapphire Princess is the second ship in the  Gem Class and debuted in May of 2004. She carries 2,600 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was christened by Nancy Gore Murkowski, the former First Lady of Alaska on June 10, 2004 Seattle, WA.

Island Princess – 2003

Island Princess is the second ship in the  Coral Class and debuted in July of 2003. She carries 2,200 passengers (based on two per cabin). She was christened by Godparents by Gold Medalists Jaime Sale and David Pelletier.

Coral Princess – 2002

Coral Princess is the first ship in the  Coral Class and debuted in March of 2002. She carries 2,000 passengers (based on two per cabin). The ship Coral Princess features more than 700 balcony staterooms and was custom built to navigate the historic Panama Canal . In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Princess Cruises fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is an American cruise line which is part of the Carnival Corporation and sister to other brands such as Cunard Line , P&O Cruises and Holland America Line .

Its headquarters are based in Santa Clarita, California, however, some marketing activities are also carried out at Carnival House in Southampton, England.

The company itself was made famous by the television series, The Love Boat, however, it was founded in 1965 when Stanley McDonald chartered the original ship Princess Patricia to sail Mexican Riveria cruises when traditionally the ship would have been laid up for the winter.

Eventually, P&O Cruises acquired Princess in 1974, at that point the line had two ships – Island Princess and Pacific Princess .

Much later on, in 2003 when Carnival acquired P&O Princess Cruises (as it was then called) Carnival transferred operations of Princess Cruises over to America back from the UK.

Princess Cruises operate cruises worldwide – with many of their ships offering Alaskan itineraries and more recently several more of their ships now sailing from Southampton to Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

What is the newest Princess Cruises ship? If you’re in the market for a Princess cruise, it’s something worth knowing.

The newest Princess cruise ship is typically also the Princess ship with the most up-to-date restaurants, bars, attractions and cabins. It’s the one to choose if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Princess cruise vacation.

As of this year, the newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. It sailed on its maiden voyage in March 2022.

That said, Discovery Princess soon will be supplanted as the newest Princess Cruises vessel by Sun Princess — the first of a new class of vessels for the line. Sun Princess begins sailing in February 2024.

Other relatively new Princess ships include Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess and Majestic Princess. All began sailing in the last six years.

In all, Princess Cruises operates 15 vessels. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two years or so, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them. The oldest Princess Cruises ship, Grand Princess, is 25 years old.

In general, Princess Cruises’ newest ships are bigger and more venue-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of options for restaurants, bars and pool areas for your Princess cruise vacation, you’ll want to stick to vessels built in the last 10 or so years.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship?

The newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. As noted above, it debuted in March 2022.

Measuring 145,000 gross tons, Discovery Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than many older Princess ships.

Discovery Princess is part of Princess Cruises’ six-ship Royal class of vessels, which is comprised of bigger ships than the line’s earlier classes of vessels. The Royal class began debuting in 2013 and also includes Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.

What is the oldest Princess cruise ship?

The oldest Princess cruise ship is Grand Princess. Unveiled way back in 1998, it’s the namesake vessel for the line’s Grand class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.

There are seven Grand-class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand-class vessels are smaller than the Royal-class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Royal-class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren’t as accessible to the bigger ships.

Still, the Grand-class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy.

What new Princess cruise ships are coming?

Princess currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. As noted above, it’s the first of all-new Sphere-class series of vessels for the line that, as of now, will be made up of two ships (Princess could order more Sun-class ships in coming years — we’ll see).

The second ship in the Sphere-class series, to be called Star Princess, is due to begin sailing in 2025.

The Sphere-class vessels are being built at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard. They include The Dome, a glass dome-covered pool area with tiers of seating facing the bow that will turn into a nighttime entertainment zone with a stage at night.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship available for booking?

Sun Princess is the newest Princess cruise ship you can book right now. While the vessel isn’t yet in operation, its initial sailings scheduled for February 2024 already are on sale, as are future voyages through March 2025. The one other Princess ship on order, Star Princess, has yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of Princess cruise ships?

The Sphere class is the newest class of Princess ships. It’ll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024.

At 175,500 tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet — a significant jump in size for the line. And yet, while it’s 21% bigger, it’s designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess hopes to draw more upmarket travelers.

In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.

What’s the difference between newer and older Princess ships?

Newer Princess ships generally are bigger than older Princess ships and thus have more and bigger onboard venues than the line’s older vessels.

On the newest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance,  you’ll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you’ll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You’ll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored “SeaWalk” that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess’ oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line’s oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess Cruises but isn’t eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren’t as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess.

Note that all Princess Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Princess vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

i have been with princess cruise for only 6 years i have 129 days in the ocean this year i have a 7 day in october but next year i have 3 cruise a 7 day in april a 30 day in july and a 14 day in november i can’t wait lest year i was doing a 28 day in Australia and he’d to come home 20 days orly i love princess cruises

Princess Cruises Unveils Exclusive New Sanctuary Collection

Princess Cruises announced an exclusive Sanctuary Collection aboard the Sun Princess, which is sailing now, and the Star Princess to debut in 2025.

Guests reserving in the Sanctuary Collection enjoy exclusive access to the ship’s top-deck retreat area and high-end amenities such as exclusive private dining and relaxation areas and the Princess Premier bundle.

“Our new Sanctuary Collection offers guests those ultra-private, tucked away spaces that rival any high-end resort and surpasses the offerings of comparable cruise lines featuring similar ship-within-a-ship amenities,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “With spacious and well-appointed accommodations, along with an array of premium extras and its exclusivity, our new Sanctuary Collection delivers the ultimate in access and indulgence to deliver an unparalleled experience.”

On the Sun Princess, the top-deck Sanctuary Club is now reserved exclusively for Sanctuary Collection guests who access the private entry via their Princess Medallion. Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

Princess Cruises ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

What is the newest Princess Cruises ship? If you’re in the market for a Princess cruise, it’s something worth knowing.

The newest Princess cruise ship is typically also the Princess ship with the most up-to-date restaurants, bars, attractions and cabins. It’s the one to choose if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Princess cruise vacation.

As of this year, the newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. It sailed on its maiden voyage in March 2022.

That said, Discovery Princess soon will be supplanted as the newest Princess Cruises vessel by Sun Princess — the first of a new class of vessels for the line. Sun Princess begins sailing in February 2024.

Other relatively new Princess ships include Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess and Majestic Princess. All began sailing in the last six years.

In all, Princess Cruises operates 15 vessels. On average, the line comes out with one new ship every two years or so, and it typically keeps vessels in its fleet for around 20 to 30 years before retiring them. The oldest Princess Cruises ship, Grand Princess, is 25 years old.

In general, Princess Cruises’ newest ships are bigger and more venue-packed than its older ships. If you crave a lot of options for restaurants, bars and pool areas for your Princess cruise vacation, you’ll want to stick to vessels built in the last 10 or so years.

The oldest Princess cruise ships — those built in the late 1990s and early 2000s — can be as much as 30% smaller than the line’s newest vessels.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship?

The newest Princess cruise ship is Discovery Princess. As noted above, it debuted in March 2022.

Measuring 145,000 gross tons, Discovery Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than many older Princess ships.

Discovery Princess is part of Princess Cruises’ six-ship Royal class of vessels, which is comprised of bigger ships than the line’s earlier classes of vessels. The Royal class began debuting in 2013 and also includes Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.

What is the oldest Princess cruise ship?

The oldest Princess cruise ship is Grand Princess. Unveiled way back in 1998, it’s the namesake vessel for the line’s Grand class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.

There are seven Grand-class vessels in the Princess fleet in all, making it the biggest grouping of ships at the line. Unveiled between 1998 and 2008, the Grand-class vessels are smaller than the Royal-class vessels at around 107,000 to 116,000 tons in size. This smaller size allows them to operate a wider range of itineraries than the Royal-class ships, as the vessels can access some smaller ports that aren’t as accessible to the bigger ships.

Still, the Grand-class vessels are big enough to offer a lot of onboard venues. The Grand-class ships carry between 2,600 to 3,100 passengers at double occupancy.

What new Princess cruise ships are coming?

Princess currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. As noted above, it’s the first of all-new Sphere-class series of vessels for the line that, as of now, will be made up of two ships (Princess could order more Sun-class ships in coming years — we’ll see).

The second ship in the Sphere-class series, to be called Star Princess, is due to begin sailing in 2025.

The Sphere-class vessels are being built at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard. They include The Dome, a glass dome-covered pool area with tiers of seating facing the bow that will turn into a nighttime entertainment zone with a stage at night.

What is the newest Princess cruise ship available for booking?

Sun Princess is the newest Princess cruise ship you can book right now. While the vessel isn’t yet in operation, its initial sailings scheduled for February 2024 already are on sale, as are future voyages through March 2025. The one other Princess ship on order, Star Princess, has yet to open for bookings.

What is the newest class of Princess cruise ships?

The Sphere class is the newest class of Princess ships. It’ll be made up of at least two vessels, the first of which (Sun Princess) is due to debut in February 2024.

At 175,500 tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest ships currently in the Princess fleet — a significant jump in size for the line. And yet, while it’s 21% bigger, it’s designed to hold just 17% more passengers.

In other words, its space-to-passenger ratio will be greater, making the ship feel roomier — if only modestly.

In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess hopes to draw more upmarket travelers.

In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.

What’s the difference between newer and older Princess ships?

Newer Princess ships generally are bigger than older Princess ships and thus have more and bigger onboard venues than the line’s older vessels.

On the newest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance,  you’ll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you’ll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You’ll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored “SeaWalk” that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess’ oldest cruise ships are significantly smaller than its newest ships and lack some of the above features. They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line’s oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes them a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess Cruises but isn’t eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren’t as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess.

Note that all Princess Cruises ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Princess vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

Princess Cruises' Star Princess ship delayed, 9 sailings canceled

Travelers will have to wait longer than planned to sail on Princess Cruises’ upcoming ship.

The delivery of Star Princess, which was set to debut next summer, will be pushed back by about two months. The cruise line said the delay was a “mutual” decision with shipbuilder Fincantieri.

“Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings,” Princess said in a news release .

Guests whose cruises are impacted will be able to rebook on any Princess ship and, depending on which sailing they pick, receive future cruise and onboard credits. They will also be able to opt for a full refund of their fare instead.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” Princess Cruises President John Padgett said in the release.

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The ship’s new inaugural itineraries will include 11 and seven-day Mediterranean cruises on Oct. 4 and 15, 2025, respectively. Those will be followed by a two-week transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Oct. 22, 2025.

Those sailings will be available to book on April 30.

Star Princess will be the second in the line’s Sphere Class. Sister ship Sun Princess was also delayed ahead of its launch earlier this year, with Princess citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard.
