Paul Heller has been a lifelong avid traveler and language learner and teacher, Even as a child, he told Santa Claus that he wanted to visit all the children worldwide. At seven years old, Paul wanted to retire to Mexico. At eight, he memorized the name, capital, location, and some facts about every country worldwide. At twelve, he found a book "Lonely Planet: Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" and started developing his own itinerary for a future round-the-world trip. He remained obsessed with travel; after getting a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and working as an administrator, He spent his vacations going to different countries around the globe studying language, touring, and volunteering. In 1994, he quit his job and lived in Russia as a volunteer English instructor. He discovered that he loved teaching languages. In 2004, he decided to make a living out of his travels and founded a community of people who love to travel just like him. He developed 5 three-hour classes about living and traveling long-term worldwide which he taught in over 50 adult education programs throughout the US. After his parents passed, he realized his dream of traveling around the world; cruising and touring some of the most remote places like the North Atlantic, Patagonia, and Oceania; and learning new languages (he knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian). Paul encourages everyone to learn foreign languages. He knows that it can be frustrating and slow but that anyone can learn a language if they put in the work and, most importantly, learning a language is well worth the time and effort because it opens up a whole new set of people, ideas, and cultures. He is currently spending the next chapter of his life in Mérida, México. He is excited about using this blog and his classes and workshops to inspire and equip fellow Fifty Plus Nomads with the language, cultural, and psychological skills necessary to be successful and happy long-term travelers and expats over 50.

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

How to Have a Safe, Fun, and Successful Field Trip

When You Leave the Classroom, There's a Whole New Set of Rules

New teachers might naively think that field trips are easier and more fun than a typical day in the classroom. But throw in crises like a lost group of children or wasp stings, and field trips can go from fun to frantic in no time.

But if you adjust your expectations you can come up with a new, more practical way to approach field trips and minimize the chances of drama and mayhem.

Tips for a Successful Field Trip

Follow these field trip tips and you'll likely create fun learning adventures for your students:

  • Explicitly discuss field trip behavior rules with your students beforehand. Teach, model, and review appropriate field trip behavior with your students for at least a week before the big event. Drill into their heads that field trips are not the time or place to mess around and that any aberrant behavior will result in non-participation in any future field trips that school year. Sound serious and back it up with consequences as needed. It's good to have your students scared of testing the boundaries on field trips. Emphasize that they are representing our school's reputation when they are off-campus and that we want to present our best behavior to the outside world. Make it a point of pride and reward them afterward for a job well done.
  • Give your students a learning task ahead of time. Your students should show up for the field trip with a base of knowledge on the subject at hand, as well as questions to answer before returning to the classroom. Spend some time in the weeks before the field trip discussing the subject matter. Review a list of questions they will be looking to answer during the field trip. This will keep them informed, engaged, and focused on learning all day long.
  • Choose parent chaperones wisely. Field trips require as many adult eyes and ears as you can get, but unfortunately, you can't be everywhere at once. From the first day of school, observe the parents of your students closely, looking for signs of responsibility, firmness, and maturity. A lax or careless parent can be your worst nightmare on a field trip, so choose your parental allies wisely. That way, you'll reap the benefits of having adult partners in the field trip process.
  • Make sure you have all the necessary medications. Talk to the school nurse and procure any and all medications that your students usually take during the day. While on the field trip, make sure you administer the medications accordingly. If you have students will allergies, you may need to get trained on how to use an EpiPen. If so, the student involved will need to stay with you at all times.
  • Arrive at school early on field trip day. The students will be excited and antsy, ready to go. You'll want to greet the chaperones and give them instructions for the day. It takes some time to organize the sack lunches and ensure that everyone has what they need for the day. And one last pep talk on appropriate behavior never hurt anybody.
  • Give your chaperones the tools they need to succeed. Make nametags for all chaperones and students. Create a "cheat sheet" of the day's itinerary, special rules, your cell phone number, and the names of all kids in each chaperone's group; distribute these sheets to each adult on the field trip. Procure and label grocery bags that each chaperone can use to carry the group's sack lunches. Consider getting a little thank-you gift for each chaperone, or treat them to lunch that day.
  • Be proactive with regards to challenging students. If you have a student who causes trouble regularly in the classroom , it's safe to assume he or she will cause at least five times more trouble in public. If possible, ask his or her parent to be a chaperone. That will usually limit any potential problems. Also, when you are making groups, split any problem pairs into separate groups. This is a good policy for troublemakers, chatty kids, or bickering frenemies. And it's probably best to keep the most challenging students in your own group, rather than pawning them off on an unsuspecting parent chaperone.
  • Count all day. As the teacher, you will likely spend most of your day counting heads and making sure everyone is accounted for. Obviously, the worst thing that can occur on a field trip is losing a student. So count accurately and often. Enlist the help of chaperones in this task, but do it yourself too, for your own peace of mind. Keeping track of each and every student is the number one priority of field trip day.
  • Do a "debriefing" when you return to the classroom. If you have a few extra minutes after the field trip and before dismissal from school, put on some soothing classical music and have the students draw about what they saw and learned that day. It gives them a chance to decompress and review what they experienced. The next day, it's a good idea to do a more active and in-depth review of the field trip material, extending the learning further and connecting it to what you're working on in the classroom.
  • Write thank-you notes after the field trip. Lead a class language arts lesson the day after your field trip, formally thanking the people who hosted your group. This serves as an etiquette lesson for your students and helps form your school's good reputation at the field trip destination. In future years, this goodwill could translate into prime perks for your school.

With proper planning and a positive attitude, field trips can be unique ways to explore the outside world with your students. Stay flexible and always have a Plan B, and you should do just fine.

Fifth grade students observe nature during a field trip

Yes, Field Trips Are Worth the Effort

Culturally enriching trips can boost grades and decrease absences and behavioral infractions, new research reveals.

As a teacher, Elena Aguilar often looked for opportunities to get her students out of the classroom and into different neighborhoods or natural environments. “We did the usual museum trips and science center stuff, but I loved the trips which pushed them into unfamiliar territory,” writes Aguilar , an instructional coach and author. Nudging kids out of their comfort zones, she says, “taught them about others as well as themselves. It helped them see the expansiveness of our world and perhaps inspired them to think about what might be available to them out there.”

Aguilar’s thinking made an impact: 15 years after traveling with her third-grade class to Yosemite National Park, a student contacted Aguilar on Facebook to thank her for the life-changing excursion. “You changed our lives with that trip,” the student wrote. “It's what made me want to be a teacher, to be able to give that same gift to other kids.”

As schools grapple with pandemic-related concerns about balancing in-seat instructional time with non-essentials like trips, new research published in The Journal of Human Resources argues that field trips, and the vital educational experiences that they provide—whether it’s a visit to a local museum or a big commitment like Aguilar’s national park trip—deliver a host of positive social and academic outcomes and are worth the effort.

“The pandemic should not keep schools from providing these essential cultural experiences forever,” asserts Jay P. Greene , one of the study’s co-authors and a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, in an opinion piece for the Daily News . “If schools make culturally-enriching field trips an integral part of the education experience, all students—especially those whose parents have a harder time accessing these experiences on their own—would benefit.”

In the study, researchers assigned more than 1,000 fourth- and fifth-grade students in Atlanta to two groups. One group participated in three to six “culturally-enriching” field trips—visits to an art museum, a live theater performance, and a symphony concert—while students in the control group stayed put in class. The outcome? Kids in the field trip group “scored higher on end-of-grade exams, received higher course grades, were absent less often, and had fewer behavioral infractions,” compared to students in the control group, according to a ScienceDaily brief . Benefits lasted two to three years, Greene writes, and were “most visible when students were in middle school.”

“We are able to demonstrate that a relatively simple intervention—and we consider it pretty low-touch; three field trips in a year, maybe six field trips in two years—can actually have some substantial impacts,” says lead study author Heidi Holmes Erickson in an interview with The 74 . “They’re not just limited to social benefits. It shows that smaller interventions can actually have some significant effects on academics as well.”

Field trips aren’t a threat to in-class instruction, Erickson notes, they’re a tool to help bolster engagement and expand students’ horizons. “It's possible to expose students to a broader world and have a culturally enriching curriculum without sacrificing academic outcomes, and it may actually improve academic outcomes,” Erickson says. Far from harming test scores, the researchers found that culturally rich excursions reinforce academics and “students who participated in these field trips were doing better in class.”

Meanwhile, class trips don't need to be elaborate productions to make an impact: small excursions outside the classroom—"low-touch," as the researchers call them—can pack a punch. Here’s how three educators recommend dialing it back with low-stakes options that are both engaging and stimulating for students, but might not require days to prepare and plan:

Make Them Bite-Sized : Instead of allocating an entire day to a field trip, educational consultant Laurel Schwartz takes her classes on micro field trips , or “short outings that can be completed in a single class period.” These real-world encounters, she says, are especially beneficial for English learners and world language students. A micro field trip to a nearby park or around school grounds, for example, can be a great opportunity to “enhance a unit on nature and wildlife while reinforcing vocabulary for senses, colors, and the concepts of quantity and size,” Schwartz writes. “Afterwards, students might write descriptive stories set in the place you visited using vocabulary collected and defined together by the class.”

Try Teacher-Less Trips : To encourage exploration and learning outside of the classroom, former social studies teacher Arch Grieve removes himself from the equation with teacher-less field trips rooted in students’ local communities. Grieve only suggests options that are directly tied to a unit being discussed in class—like attending a talk at a local university or visiting a museum or cultural festival—and offers extra credit to incentivize students. “These trips allow for a greater appreciation of my subject matter than is possible in the school setting, and perhaps best of all, there's little to no planning involved.”

Explore Virtual Options : It may not be as fun as visiting in person, but the Internet makes it possible to visit museums like The National Gallery of London and The Vatican Museums without leaving the school building. Middle school English teacher Laura Bradley likes to search the Museums for Digital Learning website by topic, keyword, and grade level, to find lessons and activities that meet her unique curricular needs. The site grants access to digitized museum collections, 3D models, audio files, documents, images, and videos.

Field Trip Quotes

See, bad things happen to me on field trips. Like at my fifth-grade school, when we went to the Saratoga battlefield, I had this accident with a Revolutionary War cannon. I wasn’t aiming for the school bus, but of course I got expelled anyway. - Percy Jackson Picture Quote #1

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve/NPS file

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas is pleased to announce the "America's Field Trip" contest, a nationwide initiative organized as part of the America 250 celebrations.

Hosted by America 250 at   www.america250.org , this contest presents an opportunity for students in third through 12th grades to engage with history, culture, and nature, including the unique offerings of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. In 2026, the United States will celebrate its semiquincentennial, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As the country honors this monumental occasion, it's imperative to incorporate the voices of today's youth, who stand as the future leaders, innovators, and thinkers shaping the next 250 years, a park release said.

The America’s Field Trip contest empowers students to share their personal perspectives on what America means to them. By crafting and submitting artwork, videos, or essays in response to the prompt “What does America mean to you?”, students and their parent/legal guardian or teacher with parental approval, have the opportunity to earn an unforgettable field trip experience to some of the nation's most iconic historic and cultural landmarks. The contest concludes at 11:59 p.m. ET on May 17. For further details regarding the "America's Field Trip" contest and how to participate, visit   https://america250.org/fieldtrip/ .

"At Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, we hold a deep belief in the transformative power of education to inspire future generations and instill a profound appreciation for our natural and cultural heritage," remarked Kristen Hase, the preserve's superintendent. "Through the 'America's Field Trip' contest, we eagerly welcome students and educators to uncover the wonders of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem while exploring the multifaceted meanings of America."

Twenty-five first-place winners from each grade level will embark on a 3-day, 2-night trip with free travel and lodging to a select historic or cultural site. Second-place winners will receive a $500 cash prize. Additionally, teachers affiliated with the top-scoring student submissions in each grade level will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with America 250 in providing students and educators with an extraordinary opportunity to delve into our nation’s history through the 'America's Field Trip' contest as our future generations explore the idea of what America means to them," emphasized Heather Brown, Tallgrass Prairie's chief of interpretation, education, and visitor services.

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located two miles north of Strong City on Kansas State Highway 177 (the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway) and is a unique public/private partnership between the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy.  For more information, visit the preserve’s Facebook page at   http://www.facebook.com/NPS.TallgrassPrairie   , website at   www.nps.gov/tapr , email   [email protected] , or call the preserve at (620) 273-8494 ext 270.  To learn more about The Nature Conservancy in Kansas, visit the Conservancy’s website at   www.nature.org/Kansas   or Facebook page at   https://www.facebook.com/TNCKansas   .

PHOENIX — Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, right-hander Hayden Wesneski woke up to the sound of his roommate, first-base prospect Matt Mervis, knocking at his door.

Triple-A Iowa manager Marty Pevey had been trying to reach Wesneski, who had missed so many calls while he was asleep that his phone had fallen to the floor. The Cubs were recalling him , and he needed to get to Arizona before their afternoon game against the Diamondbacks.

‘‘It’s just one of those things where you just have to focus on the job,’’ said Wesneski, who pitched four scoreless innings in the Cubs ’ 5-3 victory. ‘‘It’s trying to make it as simple as that, right? Like, ‘I’ve got to do this today. OK, let’s do it really good.’ ’’

Wesneski’s one-hit effort saved a bullpen that had been worn threadbare by back-to-back extra-inning games. Cubs fans behind the visitors’ dugout thanked him with a standing ovation as he walked off the field. With the victory, the Cubs won the rubber game of another nail-biting three-game series at Chase Field.

Second baseman Nico Hoerner drew the connection after the first game of the series, which the Cubs won 3-2 in 11 innings .

‘‘Honestly, [it] felt very similar to the games we played here last September,’’ Hoerner said. ‘‘Just wild extra innings, back and forth, big moments. And so great for our group to come out on top.’’

In September, the Cubs lost all three games. First, they made a valiant comeback in the ninth inning but fell two runs short. Then, in a 13-inning game the next day , they had a chance to win when a sharp comebacker hit Wesneski in the arm and popped into the air. Shortstop Dansby Swanson tried to field it on the bounce, and the Cubs were walked off on the next play. In the series finale, the Cubs only scored two runs.

After being swept by another wild-card contender, the Cubs’ postseason hopes started slipping away. They would go on to miss the playoffs, finishing one game behind the Diamondbacks. From the last National League wild-card spot, the Diamondbacks made it all the way to the World Series.

‘‘We were joking [that] we love extra-innings here,’’ Wesneski said. ‘‘They play tough, they play hard, they’re scrappy, right? They’re not going to give you anything.

‘‘And, yeah, that [extra-inning loss last year] did hurt. Because — I think about it a lot — we were one game out. If we win that game, it’s a little different situation. So I think about that game a lot more than you would think.’’

The stakes weren’t as high this week, but the games were just as competitive.

‘‘We can’t stop doing that,’’ left fielder Ian Happ said with a chuckle after the Cubs’ 12-11 loss Tuesday in 10 innings. ‘‘We need to finish a game in nine innings.

‘‘We had really good games here at the end of last year. And they’re a good team. . . . They’ve got a deep bullpen. Lineup’s deep. They do a good job top to bottom.’’

The Cubs’ lineup, even without Seiya Suzuki (strained right oblique), showed its depth, with Hoerner, Happ and catcher Miguel Amaya all having big offensive showings Tuesday.

Happ’s first home run of the season came in one of his biggest at-bats. The lead already had changed hands twice. With two outs in the seventh, he turned on a cutter up and in and drove it into the Diamondbacks’ bullpen for a grand slam that put the Cubs head 11-8.

‘‘I wasn’t thinking about it,’’ Happ said of his first home run. ‘‘But just to get it out of the way, it’s nice to put one in the column.’’

Of course, because it was the Cubs and Diamondbacks battling it out at Chase Field, it wouldn’t be that easy. The Cubs’ pitching, including a bullpen that had held up under the pressure of five consecutive close games, faltered.

This time, however, the Cubs bounced back from that extra-inning loss to win the series finale Wednesday.

The Cubs headed back to Chicago having gone 5-4 on a tough West Coast road trip. And a sleep-deprived Wesneski prepared to get on a return flight — on the same day as his flight out to Phoenix.

‘‘Right now, I’m pretty wired

Florida schools want to improve attendance. Are field trips an answer?

  • Jeffrey S. Solochek Times staff

The big story: It’s one thing to notice that students aren’t coming to school as often as they used to.

It’s quite another to do something about it.

In Pinellas County, schools superintendent Kevin Hendrick has made it a priority to find ways to have students want to come to class. He’s been emphasizing engaging lessons and plenty of enrichment activities, from clubs to academic competitions.

Field trips play a key role in the initiative. As Kim Hill, the district’s new director of student experience put it, “There is power in going off campus.” Read more here .

Speaking of competitive academics, the coach of an Alachua County high school’s nationally successful math team will start a private school focused on academic competition , Main Street Daily News reports. “America is very competitive, but we channel our competition in sports, for the most part. Pandemic relief: Hundreds of Volusia County teachers could be displaced , with their programs ended, as the school district’s federal pandemic relief funding runs out, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports. District officials said they need to revamp their budgeting systems.

School board politics: Former Martin County superintendent John Millay has dropped his school board candidacy , saying it could jeopardize the relationship his new employer has with the school district, WPTV reports.

Student health: Four students at a St. Lucie County middle school were taken to the hospital after eating what was believed to be THC-laced gummies , WFLA reports.

Superintendents: The deadline to apply for Duval County’s superintendent post is Monday. So far, six people have submitted their paperwork , WJXT reports.

Eminem's Daughter Hailie Jade Scott Preps for Bachelorette Trip Ahead of Wedding to Fiancé Evan McClintock

Scott offered a glimpse of the outfits and accessories she packed for her pre-wedding getaway

Eminem 's daughter Hailie Jade Scott is ready to celebrate!

On Monday, April 15, the influencer and podcaster, 28, shared an Instagram Reel showing her packing for her upcoming bachelorette trip ahead of her wedding to fiancé Evan McClintock .

In the clip, she explained that she likes to begin her packing by "laying out all of my outfits by day so I know exactly what needs to go in the suitcase." The camera panned to reveal an assortment of clothes, swimsuits, bags, sunglasses, jewelry, hair accessories and more spread out on top of her bed.

She then demonstrated how she uses packing cubes of various sizes to keep her stuff organized within her suitcase, and stows all of her hair styling equipment together in a middle pocket. "So things are confined and the cords aren't everywhere," she explains.

Scott reserved one side of her suitcase for shoes, a white noise machine that she says "goes everywhere" with her, a bag full of hair accessories and a medicine and supplement organizer.

After zipping up her well-organized suitcase, she posed with a big smile while she held a white cowboy hat in her hands. "And now I'm all packed up for my bachelorette!" she declared.

Hailie Jade/Instagram

Scott and McClintock got engaged in February 2023 after six years of dating. She shared the big news on Instagram at the time, writing, "Casual weekend recap… 😭💗 2.4.23 💍 i love you @evanmcclintock11 ," alongside photos of her fiancé down on one knee and the couple popping a bottle of celebratory champagne together.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Scott's sister Alaina Marie Scott commented on the post, "😭😭😭 couldn't be happier for the two of you🍾can't wait do this chapter of life with you guys ❤️."

Just months later, in May 2023, Hailie shared highlights on Instagram from her and McClintock's rooftop engagement party. In the Reel, she gave a peek at the party decorations, which include lots of white roses, candles and a photo area with a glittery silver backdrop. She also included photos from the couple's engagement photo shoot, which took place that same day.

Hailie and McClintock first met as students at Michigan State University and began dating in 2016. Her famous father, 51, gave his stamp of approval on the relationship during a 2020 interview on the Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson podcast, after host Tyson asked if Hailie — whom Eminem shares with ex-wife Kim Mathers — had any kids.

"No babies. Just a boyfriend. She's doing good. She's made me proud for sure," the rapper said at the time.

The father-daughter duo made a rare public outing together in October 2023, attending a Detroit Lions game at Ford Field. The "Lose Yourself" singer shared a video on Instagram that showed him cheering on his team from a stadium suite, and at one point, he could be seen leaning over in his seat to chat with Hailie.
