Driving around Glacier is a spectacular way to see the sights – particularly along Going-to-the-Sun Road – but drivers may sometimes miss out when they're behind the wheel. Let someone else do the driving by taking a famed Red Bus Tour. These buses – chauffeured by drivers known as "Jammers" – date back to the 1930s, and feature canvas rollback tops that offer unencumbered views of the surrounding landscape. Plus, each bus accommodates just 16 passengers.

Tour Duration and Details

There are nine tour routes in total. Tours depart from Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn, St. Mary Lodge and Rising Sun Motor Inn on the east side. On the west side, you can catch the tour at Lake McDonald Lodge, Apgar Visitor Center and the West Glacier KOA. Additional departure points may be available for select tours. Depending on which route you take, you could explore popular sights like Lake McDonald Lodge, Logan Pass , St. Mary Valley and Two Medicine . You may also get to see the alpine areas of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Tours run during the peak season – typically from June through September or October – but exact dates will vary depending on the weather. Duration also varies by tour: They can last from about 2.5 hours to eight hours or more.

Fees vary based on tour, activity duration and departure point. For short tours, expect tickets to start at $50 for adults and $25 for children. Daylong tours cost about $110 for adults and $55 for children.

Recent Reviews

Tour-takers commented that the bus is a great way to see the park. They added that it's much more relaxing than driving yourself, but note that seating can be a bit cramped. Many travelers also complimented the guides for their great driving and informative commentary. Others warn that you will need to book tickets well in advance as tours sell out quickly.

Note: There are no physical nor virtual tickets for the tour. You will check in for your tour at your pickup point's front desk or concierge desk at least 15 minutes before the tour departs. For schedules and to purchase tickets, visit the Glacier National Park Lodges' website .

#1 Going-to-the-Sun Road

U.S. News Insider Tip: Grab your coffee to go and drive up Going-to-the-Sun Road at dawn. It's magical to witness the majestic alpenglow on Glacier National Park's mountain peaks as the sun rises. It's also your best chance to see wildlife before the road becomes too busy. – Kelsey J. Lawrence

Grans On The Go

Discovering Kindred Spirits With Travelers Over 50

Ride With Rosemary — Red Bus Tours In Glacier National Park

Historic red bus tours are a perfect way to see glacier national park.

Grans on The Go with The Red Bus Tours in Glacier National Park

We were a little unsure what we would see on a foggy and rainy day in the mountains on our planned tour. But as soon as Jammer Karl greeted us for our Red Bus Tours in Glacier National Park, we knew we were in for a fabulous day.  Our four-hour tour traveling the Going-to-the-Sun Road was full of history, adventure, and entertainment, all within the comfort of this historic small bus.

Rosemary, of the Red Bus Tours in Glacier National Park

Historic Red Buses

The vintage red buses are numbered, indicating the order in which they arrived in the park, and many are affectionately named by their drivers. Ours was “Rosemary,” named for Jammer Karl’s mother. Her dark brown leather interior shined from expert care. She was roomy and allowed four adults to slide in easily on the long bench seats.  Her suspension creaked a little as she pulled up the hills, which seemed all a part of her charm.

Going-to-the-Sun Road

Glacier National Park’s “Going-to-the-Sun-Road” is an iconic drive of 50 miles of mountain curves and sometimes cliff-hanging turns.  Taking the Red Bus Tour allowed us time to see the spectacular scenery in a relaxing way.

Mountain view of cloudy peak, valley, and river in Glacier National Park

The trans-mountain road was built between 1920 and 1933 and crosses over the Continental Divide at Logan’s Pass.  Construction crews climbed along narrow ledges, hanging onto ropes over death-defying cliffs. Experts used small blasts of explosives to prevent significant damage to the landscape. At times, excavation of rock was done by hand.

Although the employee turnover rate was 300%, only three construction workers lost their lives during the lengthy construction period. The road is named for the nearby Going-to-the-Sun Mountain, a legendary mountain that reaches toward the sun.

How to book Red Bus Tours in Glacier National Park

Book your Red Bus Tour while you’re planning your trip to Glacier National Park. The tours are very popular and tend to sell out on a daily basis. The typical open season is May-September. As examples, the 2019 Eastside tours operated from June 8 to September 22. The 2019 Westside tours operated from May 18 to October 20. Because of their original design, seating in the buses does not accommodate wheelchair accessibility.

Where to catch the Red Bus Tour

Red Bus Tours pick up passengers in five prominent locations in both the east and west sides of Glacier National Park: Glacier Park Lodge , Apgar Village Lodge , West Glacier Village ,  Motel Lake McDonald  and St. Mary Village . All tours are round-trip and last from 2.5 – 9 hours, traversing the Going-to-the-Sun-Road.

Accessibility in Glacier National Park

If you’re driving into the park,  be sure to check the current road status in the park for road closures due to weather and construction repairs. National Park Service shuttles are also an option if you prefer not to drive. Book shuttles in advance. Some shuttle routes offer wheelchair accessibility. Some walking trails and stops along the road are wheelchair accessible.

Two wheelchair-accessible vehicles have been added to the Xanterra Parks and Resorts tours fleet. The accessible tours follow the same itinerary as the standard tours and depart on the west side from the Apgar Visitor Center and Lake McDonald Lodge, and St. Mary Visitor Center on the east side.

See Glacier Park in a Unique 1930’s Bus

The earliest transportation in Glacier National Park consisted of four-horse coaches. Today’s Red Bus Tours in Glacier National Park uses a fleet of 17-passenger buses built and put into service between 1936-1939. The White Motor Company designed the Model 706s specifically for use in the national parks in the U.S. In Yellowstone National Park tours use the same model buses, painted bright yellow.

The Red Buses were built between 1936-1939 (NPS Stock Photo)

Riding in the vintage bus enhances the experience and spurs the imagination of touring the national park in the 1930s. The bus interiors preserve in their original craftsmanship with wood trim and a large steering wheel.  Thankfully, the motors are kept up to modern standards. Soon the fleet of buses will undergo further updating to a hybrid system for environmental effectiveness. The restoration will span several years with the work being done in the off-season.

Open-air tours provide wide-open views for photos

On beautiful days the drivers rollback convertible canvas tops. The open-air design lets passengers view the vertical grandeur of the mountains and deep valleys while looking over the cliffs.

With the top up on our bus and wool lap blankets, we stayed warm on our rainy day. Our driver often stopped at overlooks, timing the stops with the weather, so the two seemed to be in cooperation with each other.

History lessons included

The Red Bus Tours, managed by Xanterra Parks & Resorts, hire drivers who are like park docents with their knowledge of history. We were fortunate to have a driver who was witty and entertaining. The entire four-hour tour seemed like a moment because of our “Jammer” Karl.

Rosemary, Red Bus #89, stops so visitors can view the overlook

The buses shine brightly with red paint, like the Ripe Mountain Ash Berry of Glacier Park. They are nicknamed “The Rubies of the Rockies.” They originally cost $5000 each in 1936, and today’s worth is approximately $250,000 each. The fleet has been in use since 1936, with the exception of the years between 1943 and 1946, when fuel rationing during WWII was in place.

Karl explained that the drivers became known as “Jammers” because of the familiar sound of the gears as the drivers of the early manual transmissions double-clutched up and down the steep mountainous road.  They were first called Gearjammers,  later shortened to “Jammers.”

Women Were Discouraged from Riding in the Front

The early drivers were often college-aged men, and some of the stories Karl regaled were indicative of the antics of the age group. You can imagine what it was like in the 1930s riding with courageous young men, dressed dapperly in riding boots, riding pants, and ties, full of confidence. There are stories of women distracting the young drivers from their important work and, therefore, discouraged from riding in the front.

Jammers like to ease the tension of some of the passengers as they view the steep drop-offs on the winding roads. Jammer Karl passed this one on to us as we approached a particularly steep incline. “If this makes you nervous, do what I do while I’m driving. Just close your eyes. I do! And it helps!”

Going To The Sun Road Has Steep Drop-Offs

Jammers Have An Important Job

Today the drivers range in age and experience. They all participate in on-going training, and during the season they live in a campus-like environment sharing rooms and camaraderie. Overall the drivers are ambassadors of the park service.

Jammers drive an average of 60,000 tourists through the park in one of the oldest touring fleet of vehicles in the world. They’ve also used the historic vehicles for evacuations during times of fire or flooding. Drivers remind guests to look out for the wildlife in the area and watch for moving black dots in the terrain.

Black Bear seen from an overlook on the Red Bus Tour

Our driver embodied the spirit of someone who loves his job, although the hours are long, and the national park service does not boast high pay rates. Jammer Karl has been driving in the Red Bus Tour’s fleet for seven years, after careers in business, ministry, and acting in theatre groups. During the offseason, he enjoys camping, hiking, and biking in the outdoorsman’s paradise. Karl is also an avid traveler of the world.

Glacier National Park Lodging

The National Park Service website lists six lodges, cabins, and motels inside or just outside the park. All offer an ambiance of the history of the American West. There are majestic Swiss-style buildings with unique log designs and small log cabins, many built in the early 1900s. Several are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lake McDonald Lodge and Cabins

Lake McDonald Lodge in Glacier National Park shows exposed log beams

The park lodge, Lake McDonald Lodge , overlooks the largest lake in the western part of the park. The original exterior of 1913 boasts the construction of large wooden beams, indicating a hearty survival of weather over the years.

The lobby area of Lake McDonald Lodge looks like a hunting lodge of huge proportions. Local wildlife trophies, western artwork, a wood-burning fireplace, and rocking chairs make it feel both rugged and comforting.

A Moose Trophy in Lake McDonald Lodge

Rooms at Lake McDonald Lodge in the historic main building are on the second and third floors. In keeping with the era in which the lodge was built, air conditioning and elevators are not available. A warm and inviting restaurant and lounge serve guests delicious meals with local specialties of elk and bison.

Lake McDonald Cabins are rustic and charming

Other National Park Service accommodations at Lake McDonald include cabins with one or two beds and private bathrooms. The Cobb House has three suites. Snyder Hall has eight hostel-style or dormitory-like amenities with a shared bathroom.

Apgar Village Lodge and Cabins

Other management companies (besides the official NPS) offer lodging within Glacier National Park. We had a great experience booking through Pursuit-The Glacier National Park Collection in Apgar Village. We stayed in a two-room cabin in Apgar Village Lodge and Cabins, with a full kitchen, and a separate bedroom and bathroom.

The log cabins of Apgar Village Lodge

Apgar Village is like a small town with a restaurant, some shopping, and is a Red Bus Tours Pickup location.

Apgar Village Sidewalks are a good place for strolling and riding scooters

The NPS lodging in this area is the Village Inn at Apgar . It offers some one-bedroom units with full kitchens and other one-bedroom and two-bedroom units that can accommodate six people.

Rain on colored pebbles in Lake McDonald

Be sure and make your lodging reservations within and just outside Glacier National Park as early as possible. Most places book at least a year in advance. But you can always check with the NPS and booking companies for cancellations. We were lucky to stay in the park by checking a few months prior to our trip.

Rainbow on Lake McDonald bring photographers to the shore

Glacier National Park is a dream location for outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone who enjoys nature. The scenery is incredible, the fresh air is clear and pristine, and the smells of Spruce and Fir trees smell like Christmas. You will love visiting the national parks of the U.S., and Glacier is an unforgettable experience.

Moscow Metro

Introduction of moscow subway system (metro).

Richly Decorated Central Hall of Novokuznetskaya Station

Nowadays the Moscow Metro has 12 lines, light subway and monorail. All stations are unique and beautiful in their own way. Unfortunately, in order to visit them all, you need to spend many days. I invite guests to visit the ones that have the greatest cultural and historical interest from my point of view. Among them are the Revolution Square, Arbatskaya, Kievskaya (Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line № 3); Kievskaya, Belarusskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Komsomolskaya (the Ring line number 5). Let us dwell a bit on each.

Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line

Subway station "revolution square".

Sign “Ploshchad Revolyutsii” in Archway with Bronze Figures

Most recently - in the year 2008-2010 – the Eastern lobby was renovated. Because of the terrorist attacks in the Moscow subway that took place several hours before the planned opening of the East lobby after renovation, the solemn part of the event was canceled.

Subway station Arbatskaya

Subway Arbatskaya is located on the same subway line as the station "Revolution Square." It was founded in 1953. It received the name in honor of the Arbat Street. It has one ground lobby (Western). Initially, the lobby was in a separate building, but the new building of the General Staff of the Ministry of Defense started, the lobby appeared to be in its atrium. The old exits were bricked up; a new entrance was built into the building of General Staff of the street Vozdvizhenka. There is a huge frame with a missing portrait in the ground lobby - until mid-1950 there was a portrait of Stalin. According to some reports, it survived, but closed with plaster.

The lobby was restored and partially reconstructed in 2007-2008.

The depth of the station is 41 meters.

Pylons are finished with red marble at the bottom, decorated with bouquets of flowers made from ceramics. The floor is laid out with gray granite. The walls lined with glazed ceramic tiles, white top and black bottom. The station hall is illuminated by massive bronze chandeliers in the form of rings.

Subway station Kievskaya

There are several subway stations "Kievskaya" in Moscow, located on different branches. This name is quite popular. It comes from the capital of Ukraine - one of Russia's nearest neighbors - the city of Kiev. The name is fully consistent with the idea of the subway station. The interior the station devoted to Soviet Ukraine and the reunification of Ukraine and Russia. The station is decorated with a large number of paintings .Twenty four murals depicting workers of Soviet Ukraine are placed on the arch above the pylons. The wall from the side of platform also contains frescos, mainly with images of fantastic plants. Pylons are decorated with light marble and additionally decorated with colorful ceramic cornice. The butt of the station has a large mosaic, depicting festivities to celebrate the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.

Opened in 1953, this subway station for a long time was the final (1953-2003).

The station has one lobby, combined with the station ring line and located in the building of the Kievskaya railway station. The diameter of the central hall station is 9.5 m, the diameter of side one is 8.5 m. The depth of the station is 38 meters.

= Ring Line Subway =

It opened in 1954. The station received its name after the Kiev station, and locked the Ring line. During the construction of the station many projects were proposed, but the victory in the competition won the Kiev architects who made the construction of the station. It is the only station of the Ring Line which is not located in the Central Administrative District of Moscow.

The station has a pylon structure. Eighteen pylons are decorated with mosaic panels of glazes, decorated on the theme of Ukrainian history and friendship between the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, which started in the mid-17 century.

On the front wall of the central hall of the station a large panel with molding in the form of flags and a mosaic portrait of Lenin in the center are located. There are lines of the Soviet national anthem around the portrait, and under the portrait - the words of Lenin. One of the ways out of the station was designed by French architects modeled on the Paris Subway in 2006.

At one of the mosaics – “The Struggle for Soviet power in Ukraine "- modern passengers observe a mobile phone and PDA in the hand of one of the guerrillas, and on his knees - a laptop. In fact, he uses a field telephone, which was really a heavy thing (guerrillas holds it in two hands), and thing that people see a laptop is the lid of a box with a telephone. However, these phones have begun to produce only in the second half of the 20-ies of XX century. We must assume that the mosaic depicts a foreign field telephone transmitter.

Subway station Belorusskaya

The founded of the station was in 1952. It received the name after the Belarusian railway station nearby. The station has two ground-based lobbies. The Western one goes to Tverskaya  Zastava. It is decorated with beautiful carvings. The Eastern one leads to Butyrskiy shaft and Forest Street. The Eastern lobby is known for its majolica panels.

The station Belorusskaya is located at a depth of 42.5 m below ground. The diameter of the central hall is 9.5 meters.

Pylons are faced with light marble. The walls lined with white ceramic tiles, the floor is covered with ceramic tiles, gray, white and red colors. Lamps placed on pylons, in the form of vases made of glass and marble. The theme of decoration is economy and culture of Belarus. Decorative pattern on the floor repeats the theme of traditional Belarusian embroidery. Decorations of the ceiling consist of stucco decorations and 12 mosaic panels depicting the life of the Belarusian people.

Subway station Novoslobodskaya

Built in 1952, Subway station Novoslobodskaya got its name from the eponymous street:  the station is located at the very beginning of it.

Novoslobodskaya is pylon station of deep foundation (its depth is 40 m) with three arches.

Exit to the street is through the ground lobby with column portico, located on Novoslobodskaya Street lined with gray marble. Pylons of the underground station are faced with marble from the Urals. Thirty two spectacularly illuminated stained-glasses, placed inside the pylon and bordered by steel and gilt brass are splendid decoration of the station. A remarkable mosaic "World Peace" is located at the end of the central hall. The picture depicts a happy mother with a baby in her arms; it was the face of Stalin at the picture: the child gave a hand to him. But in times of Khrushchev the face of the former leader of USSR was removed from the panel. The walls are lined with bright marble; floor is covered with white and black granite slabs, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

Subway station Komsomolskaya

The station was built in 1952 and named in honor of the Komsomolskaya Square, which is situated nearby.

This subway station is the station of the deep bedding. Its depth is 37 meters. The station has column and three- arched design. Cast iron decoration is used in the construction, monolithic slab used as a tray for a collapsible finishing. The length of the boarding hall is 190 meters; width of it is 10 meters. There are 68 octagonal columns at station.

The main theme of the interior of the station is the fighting of the Russian people for their independence. The ceiling is decorated with eight station mosaic mural made from glazes and precious stones. Six of them represent the Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, Alexander Suvorov and Mikhail Kutuzov, the Soviet soldiers and officers at the walls of the Reichstag.

Two other panels, depicting Stalin ("Victory Parade" and "Presentation of the Guards Banner"), were replaced after the dethronement of Stalin's personality cult in 1963. New panels depict Lenin's speech in front of the Red Guards and the Motherland on the background of the Kremlin's Spasskaya Tower.

The yellow ceiling is decorated with mosaic and moldings. The hall is illuminated by massive chandeliers hanging between the panels; platforms are illuminated with smaller chandeliers. The columns are decorated with marble capitals and trimmed with light marble, as well as the wall station. The floor is laid with pink granite. There is a bust of Lenin at the end of the hall. At the opposite end of the escalator is a large Florentine mosaic of the Order of Victory with red banners on the background. The ground lobby of the station is decorated with bas-reliefs.

In conclusion...

Each of the stations of the Moscow subway is attractive and interesting in its own way. Each has its own long and fascinating history and is beautifully decorated. The Moscow subway is a whole world, which can be talking about for hours. I suggest you short - no more than one hour and a half - and a fascinating journey through the world of the Moscow subway. The pleasure is guaranteed!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
