Splendours of Egypt (Classic, Summer, 12 Days)

Thank you, Insight Vacations, for making our dream come true! We have had a fantastic experience in Egypt since 26.2.2018 to 09.03.2018 and really appreciate true dedication and top level of professionalism demonstrated by our Tour Director Mohammed Abd Allah, our guide Ramaddan and coordinator Rafaat. Those people were always there to deal efficiently with any request or wish we had and answer any question. We can highly recommend them as well as the company in general as the best facilitators of international travel ever. They provided us with a safe and reliable way to get introduced to the wonders of Egypt as well as it's friendly and hospitable people.

Southern Africa aboard the Zimbabwean Dream: travel to the ends of the earth (port-to-port cruise)

Our 9 day CroisiEurope tour from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls was excellent. Well organised with a program packed with interesting educational opportunities along with the varied safari drives. Accommodation was superb. Although most fellow tourists will be French speaking the guides were all English speaking enabling us to learn much about their country's culture and history. Downloading the Google English/French translator app helped greatly. Not a cheap holiday but well worth the money.

5 Days – 4 Nights Nile Cruise 5* From Cairo by Flight

I ended up being the only booking for the Nile cruise for the end of November with Holiday In Egypt and so they had me join a sister company, Beyond the Nile so that I could still do my trip. Hasan was our tour guide, and he was very welcoming and made sure I felt like part of the group. The group I joined were great to interact with and tour sites along the Nile with. Our group had a great time as Hasan told us what he knew about ancient Egypt and splashed some humor which was well received with our group! There was so much information to take in and ingest. The sites were well managed and though a bit crowded in some places because it is a popular time of year to go because of the cooler weather, I felt safe in all the areas we went to. I would highly recommend this trip to people and for those that may want to explore Egypt solo without being fully on their own. Thanks, Hasan, for letting me join your group!

Egyptian Legacy

This trip was absolutely amazing. Our Egyptologist, Aboudy, made the trip incredible! The trip was the perfect length for us because we got to see everything we wanted without it becoming too repetitive or boring. The Egyptian people were so incredibly lovely and welcoming. When we do and up in Egypt again, we will definitely ask Mr. Aboudy to be our guide again!

Ägypten / travel with TourRadar 2024/03 We are two women who traveled to Egypt with TourRadar in Austria. We were extremely satisfied with the booking, which can be done online or with very friendly and experienced staff on the phone. The travel group consisted of just the two of us and all of our extra requests were fulfilled. Even the arrival at the airport in Cairo was perfectly organized and an SUV with a very friendly and very safe driver and a travel companion took us to the hotel. Everything was perfectly organized and carried out throughout the entire trip. Both tour guides from Beyond The Nile Tours in Cairo and during the Nile cruise were studied experts (languages, history, tourism) and explained everything in a very friendly, passionate and understandable way. The cruise ship was equipped with large cabins, was modern and had friendly staff and good food, mostly in buffet form. Abu Simbel is a must, we had 2 drivers in a small coach for the long journey and here too, despite our extra requests, everything was perfect and on time. We always had the same drivers, tour guides and contact persons during the trip, which is very pleasant. So people, go to Egypt, fantastic

15 Days Ancient Egypt & Lake Nasser Cruise

We were delighted with our 'Ancient Egypt and Lake Nasser' tour. The 14 day trip arrangements went so smoothly, from airport pickups to boat transfers and all of the guides, drivers and group representatives were very professional. The quality of hotel and cruise accommodation was excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend 'Vacations To Go Travel'.

River Nile Cruise For 4 Nights From Luxor to Aswan ( Opt. Balloon & Abu Simbel ) Tour

River Nile Cruise For 4 Nights From Luxor to Aswan ( Opt. Balloon & Abu Simbel )

The tour in general was really amazing and surpassed our expectations! In the following some aspects: Positive: - Well equipped cruise ship with pool and bar on the top, perfect room with view on the Nile and surroundings, amazing food (far better than expected) - Nice places to visit (Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Assuan), the guides were great (especially Khalid and Ida) and provided interesting information, - Small groups throughout the guided tours (infact, it was mostly one guide for just the two of us) - Organization and planning of the stops and tours was good - Friendly and helpful stuff aboard Negative: - Horse carriage to the Edfu temple (maybe if you insist you don't have to take it) - Every day-tour includes a stop at a touristic place (jewelry, papyrus, alabaster, perfume shops..), where you sometimes have the uncomfortable feeling you need to buy something

Amazing tour. As a first time single woman traveller they were brilliant. I felt very safe, reassured and taken care off and they were very organised and professional . They took time out to make sure everyone was okay in our group - It felt lovely. All staff from the minute I arrived, tour guides, mini bus drivers through to the waiters and restaurant manager on the boat were genuinely caring. Our boat was gorgeous with polished walnut and brass, giving Agathy Christie vibes. The tour guides were knowledgeable and fun and a big shout out to Abdul who became our knowledgable friend. I absolutely loved my trip as I could just relax and enjoy knowing they had everything in hand. Would throughly recommend.
What a Great experience! The staff is so very friendly and our Guide Wael was very enthusiastic, friendly and knew a lot of fun facts and interesting stuff about everything! We absolutely recommend this trip.

River God Adventures

River God Adventures

Floating safaris down the zambezi river.

River God Adventures is a unique floating safari experience down the Lower Zambezi River from Chirundu to Kanyemba on custom made boats equipped with all the necessities to make you feel comfortable and safe.

Spend 6 nights or more exploring this vast and remarkable section of the Mighty Zambezi as your drift for 210 kilometres past some of the most breathtaking vistas in Africa.

Game view directly from your own private vessel, fish for the elusive tiger fish, observe the plentiful bird species of the region, walk amongst elephants and lions, or simply relax with a book whilst taking in the sights and sounds of the beautiful nature surrounding you.

River God Adventures owes its inception largely to co-founder Cyril “Squirrel” Meredith when he and 3 others embarked on the first adventure in 2011, which took them from Kariba Dam wall to the Cahora Bassa Dam wall.

This maiden trip sparked a concept that would encompass the true spirit of adventure and fishing whilst set in the most game rich section of the Zambezi River – it was a dream that had to be shared with others.

A Unique Combination Safari on Land and Water

  • Explore One of the World’s Largest Lakes Aboard a Deluxe Riverboat The centerpiece of this exclusive safari is a private 3-night exploration on Lake Kariba, the world's largest manmade lake. Aboard the Zimbabwean Dream , an elegant new riverboat built for African waters, we have access to a vast expanse far off the conventional safari circuit—including Matusadona National Park bordering the lake. With eight cabin suites, the ship accommodates a maximum of just 14 guests.
  • Bookend Your Time on the Water with Top Wildlife Viewing Locations Before and after our voyage on Lake Kariba, enjoy land safaris in two outstanding wildlife sanctuaries. Discover Hwange National Park, famed for its huge herds of elephant and buffalo, and its healthy predator populations. And visist Chobe National Park in Botswana—which is home to prolific hippo, crocodile and diverse hoofed game.
  • Visit Four Different National Parks This comprehensive immersion showcases four distinctly different national parks: Hwange, Matusadona, Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls), and Chobe. Together, the parks showcase a tremendous diversity of wildlife, habitats and dramatic landscapes.
  • Travel with Just 14 Guests  A small group is essential to the best safari experience, allowing us to get closer to wildlife without disturbing it and enhancing a sense of isolation in the wilderness. With no more than 14 guests aboard the riverboat, we further limit our impact by dividing into two smaller groups for most safari activities.
  • Chartered Flights Maximize Your Time on Safari Traveling between safari locations by chartered light aircraft, rather than long, dusty drives over rough dirt roads, allows us to spend more time watching wildlife on safari, rather than in transit, while enjoying scenic aerial views.
  • Stay in Seclusion at Deluxe Camps on Private Concessions We stay on private concessions within or adjacent to national parks wherever possible, where visitor density is very low. From intimate safari camps in secluded environs, we feel alone in the wilderness amidst an abundance of wildlife. Yet despite such isolation, surprising luxuries await—you'll lack for no comfort.
  • Travel with the World's Finest Naturalist Guides Our guests enjoy the personalized service of some of the best-trained, most experienced naturalist guides in all of Africa—a Nat Hab hallmark. Your Nat Hab Expedition Leader will accompany your group from start to finish, ensuring a superior safari experience. Our guides average 15 years' experience, with additional training and resources provided by WWF scientists. Our philosophy on this is simple: an African safari is only as good as the guide, so we provide the very best! See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.

Best safaris along Africa’s Rivers

On a continent known for its aridity, Africa’s rivers carry a great deal of currency. And the animals know it too: name any great wildlife reserve in Africa and you’ll find a teeming river at its heart. What could be better for a safari?

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers: lion walking along the Lower Zambezi River

Much of Africa’s game viewing takes place against a river backdrop.

But in Africa there are rivers and there are rivers. Some are internationally famous: the Congo, the Nile, the Zambezi. Others have a reputation for their wildlife while some are ephemeral and spend some of their lives as dry sand rivers. And then there are different rivers for different activities – wildlife photography, white-water rafting, canoeing and so on, and it’d be no surprise to learn that Africa’s top birding destinations include plenty of riverside lodges.

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers Lower Zambezi

Canoeing down the Lower Zambezi River – one of Africa’s biggest safari thrills.

You can even base your safari on the river, not just in the form of the small motorboats that replace 4X4 vehicles but there are houseboats too – complete with comfortable suites, viewing decks and 3-course dinners.

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers Lower Zambezi

Watching wildlife from the river delivers a new perspective to your safari.

It’s in southern Africa – principally Zambia, Botswana and South Africa –that you’ll find the largest range of river safaris and river activities, usually built into a programme of safari activities that also includes game drives and often guided walks. East African rivers may have a boating side to them in some safari destinations – the Selous in Tanzania for example. But if you want to go kayaking or fishing, perhaps spend a couple of nights on a canoeing adventure, or sit back on a luxurious houseboat, then you’ll need to look at southern Africa.

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers

Complete with a game-viewing motorboat, the Chobe Houseboats are large & luxurious.

Africa’s rivers are diverse but can be broadly grouped according to the experience they deliver.

Multi-Activity Rivers – the Zambezi & the Okavango Delta

White-water rafting on the Zambezi River just below Victoria Falls

The classic scene: white-water rafting on the Zambezi River just below Victoria Falls.

Delivering the volume of water that makes Victoria Falls a world wonder, the King of River Safaris is the Zambezi. Rising from Zambian highlands, the fourth largest river in Africa has several faces – the upper river (above Victoria Falls), the lower river (below it) – and where it has been turned into an enormous reservoir: Lake Kariba. The Zambezi eventually enters the Indian Ocean in Mozambique.

This is a river that offers activities ranging from white-water rafting and kayaking to multi-day canoe safaris and houseboat holidays. Popular Victoria Falls lies on the Zambezi and serves as a useful hub from which to explore different parts of the river – and in different ways. Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park offers an opportunity for high-adrenalin Zambezi fly camping – while a big game safari in Zimbabwe’s Matusadona National Park takes you to the edge of Lake Kariba with some of the best safari guides in Zimbabwe .

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers

A lioness surveys a river’s floodplains – great numbers of their prey animals concentrate in these areas.

Botswana’s Okavango River has even more of a reputation for wildlife. A clean-flowing river tumbling down from its high Angolan watershed, the Okavango River runs deep and straight as it hits the Kalahari Desert before fanning out into its classic Delta landscape.

Such an abundance of water is taken advantage of by tens of thousands of animals and the Okavango region has become one of the best safari destinations to weave water into your experience. Indeed, there are several lodges that are completely water-based: you have to fly or boat in and game viewing is from motorboats, canoes and viewing pontoons.

Go north to the Okavango’s Panhandle for the deepest water and the best fishing but keep to the Delta area for a combination of water and land activities – including horseback safaris – and premier game viewing. The Delta area is also better for families travelling with children as there are more activities offered but note that the delta is seasonally-driven and it helps to have an understanding of how the Okavango Delta works before choosing your month of travel.

Rivers for Wildlife – the Chobe, the Luangwa & Kafue

Did someone mention wildlife? Botswana’s Chobe River is the epicentre of Africa’s elephant population while Zambia’s Luangwa and Kafue Rivers are destinations where expert guides take you on walking safaris next to rivers full of hippo and crocodiles.

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers

River safaris in dry season Luangwa means you’ll be walking through them!

Like the Okavango, the Chobe gathers its water from northern Angola but then joins the Zambezi. Before it does, the river gives us a long open stretch that has become one of Africa’s top game viewing and birding destinations – the Chobe Riverfront. There are several lodges along the river but why not see the river from a unique (and private) perspective and book a Chobe Houseboat safari ?

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers

Dry season on Botswana’s Chobe River is a good time to be on a houseboat.

Zambia’s rivers are equally good for wildlife and birding. Both the Kafue National Park and the South Luangwa are built around their eponymous rivers, bodies of water that arise in the north of the country. The Kafue drains into a lake, the Luangwa into the Zambezi River, but not before a huge number of animals have made their homes in and around them. You’ll explore by 4X4, on foot and by boat – birders will love the water-based opportunity to see nesting southern carmine bee-eaters.

Best birding along Africa's Rivers

A riverside photographic hide overlooks a carmine bee-eater nesting colony in Zambia.

A Big Five River – the Sabie

Running through South Africa’s Kruger Park area, the Sabie River is one of the most biologically diverse in the country and it’s in the appropriately named Sabi Sands Reserve that you’ll see why. Besides being an excellent birding destination, the Sabie River is a lifeline for the region’s big animals; the Sabie riverfront has arguably Africa’s highest concentration of leopards for example, and it is a landscape that also supports lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino – making the full Big Five.

It’s true that you won’t actually get on the Sabie River – it’s generally too shallow and dried up in places for that – but your safari is based around it; for the best wildlife viewing, go in the June – October dry season when animals are concentrated at the river.

Africa’s Dry Rivers – Savute & the Hoanib

Safari guides in 1980’s Botswana used to drive their land rovers along the dry Savute River bed; these days the Savute is flowing and its lodges overlook a river landscape, complete with wallowing wildlife. Africa is home to many ephemeral rivers, running only after exceptional rain or perhaps a shift in the landscape. The Savute is a result of the latter – reinvigorated after a change in topography – and the permanent water keeps animals in the area all year round. In fact, it attracts them: go in the dry season for elephant and buffalo at the river or in the Green Season when Savute’s zebra migration passes through.

Botswana’s Savute Channel began flowing only recently

Botswana’s Savute Channel began flowing only in 2008 – it had previously been dry for over 30 years.

In contrast, Namibia’s Hoanib River flows only once every few years, relying on heavier-than-normal rain in its desert catchment area. Once on the go, the river is fast and furious, even making it to the Atlantic Ocean at times, but never lasting more than a few weeks. The effect however is miraculous: greenery erupts almost instantly from the ground, and together with the remaining water, is enough to sustain animals ranging from lions and elephant to giraffe and black rhino. Go during the Green Season for a chance to see the river flowing but the ecosystem is built around the river all year round.

Best safaris along Africa's Rivers in the desert

Africa’s desert rivers are ephemeral but their effects last deep into the year.

The Iconic Rivers – the Nile & the Congo

And that leaves the two most famous African rivers of them all. You know their names but it’s not easy to do a safari on these rivers: the Congo is a complex entity of different countries in Central Africa while the enormous River Nile draws its water from no fewer than 11 different countries as it winds its way from Lake Victoria to its vast Egyptian delta.

Best safaris and activities along Africa's Rivers

The great Congo rainforests have recently opened up to visitors – prepare to paddle.

But they can be explored. The Congo has recently opened up to visitors and offers intrepid wildlife photographers and nature watchers a new biome to visit: ancient equatorial rainforest. You’ll wade through small tributaries of the Congo River, paddle along its jungle backwaters and watch forest mammals gather at its muddy swamps. Combine it with gorilla trekking and you have the complete Congo experience. And the River Nile doubles down on that offering. There are animals and birds to see as you can cruise down the Nile in Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park and you can also put on a helmet and life-jacket and go white-water rafting on its frothing rapids.

African rivers – as diverse as the countries through which they flow.

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver.  We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

We have been to Africa for 24 of the last 27 years so know a bit about what is involved. Walter has arranged the details for the last couple of years, and has done a superb job. He is always quick to respond and comes up with answers immediately……..no evasive tactics, always head-on!

Our mom grew up in Central and South Africa so we had visited the continent many times. My sister and I wanted to take our teens and husbands to Africa to experience the magic. We had a limited budget but big and specific expectations and by some miracle Walter was able to manage both.

Safari Online understood our needs and was able to present us with sensible options to choose from. It was evident that this tour operator has knowledgable and experienced agents who can arrange a seemless tour. We were provided with a professional online itinary which was comprehensive and easy to use, knew exactely what to expect, and encountered no stumble blocks along the way.

Communication was excellent – I asked A LOT of questions and did a ton of research myself and Walter was extremely patient with me and very responsive. he was straight forward and extremely professional. Tour itself was excellent – an incredible experience and one never to be forgotten. Everything was spot on.

Safari Online have been nothing but professional and incredible from the time we made our first enquiry to the last day of our stunning holiday. Nothing was too much trouble for Walter. We are now starting to plan our next family Safari for 2019. Guess who we will be booking with??? Safari Online we hope you are ready!!!!!

Excellent service and they supplied good suggestions for our holiday they also organised all internal flights and arranged check in for us so we had no worries while on holiday. We have had a most memorable holiday staying at wonderful places thanks to Sabrina and Safari Online. Would recommend Safari Online to organise your holiday.

Our 28-day itinerary took us to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. A magnificent and unforgettable adventure. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently from the flights, transfers, rides, connections, etc. Absolutely wonderful! Can’t thank them enough!

From the very first contact we’re very happy about the respond time and quality of information from safari-online.com. Based on the received first tailor-made quote, which is a weblink with all the details about the flights, photos of the lodges etc. we knew that this is “our” partner for this trip. Our expectations were excelled!!!

Would highly recommend. Safari online asked questions when booking and were efficient and knew exactly what we were looking for in terms of accommodation and animals were wanted to see. Gave advice on a few little extras with no pressure, which we did and am very grateful which make trip even more exciting. Would definitely recommend booking with them.

7 Epic Safari Cruise Destinations in Africa

The unique ecosystems along Africa’s great rivers are home to a staggering array of wildlife, impressive ancient cities, and temples, as well as fascinating tribes and cultures that flourished on their banks.

A great alternative to a traditional safari is a  safari cruise . And by that, I mean an epic river voyage that will show you Africa’s charming nature from a different perspective.  Game viewing  on the water is a bewildering experience – intimate for the visitor and unobtrusive for the wildlife.

Safari cruises focus on the wildlife reserves and tourist attractions that are located in the proximity of the river and offer a great opportunity to visit less crowded national parks and off-the-beaten-path destinations that are by no means less rewarding than the popular ones located further inland. A safari cruise will also allow you to cover more ground, while at the same time avoiding those long dusty roads.

One of the best ways to explore Africa is from the very rivers that sustain its rich wildlife and varied ecosystems. So go ahead and save your front-row seats for the great spectacle that nature has to offer in Africa’s best river cruise destinations:

The Chobe River, Botswana

The life-giving Chobe River springs in Angola and travels through the Kalahari before reaching  Botswana , where the waterway forms the northern border of the Chobe National Park. Being one of the few water sources for the rich wildlife in the area, it supports one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet.

During the dry winter months (April to October), large herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and antelope, as well as big cats, come to drink, bathe, and play on the riverbanks. This translates to incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Home to over 400 bird species, the Chobe River is also a paradise for bird lovers. The stunning backdrop lures photographers from far and wide, and wildlife photography cannot get any better than from on board a quiet boat trip.

There a few houseboats operating on the river, the most acclaimed of which is the Zambezi Queen and the Chobe Princesses. The 28-passenger ship Zambezi Queen travels from Namibia to the Chobe National Park, home to the world’s largest population of elephants, estimated at 50,000 individuals. Due to the moist terrain, the best way to get close to these gentle giants is on a safari cruise.

river safari in africa

The Zambezi River

Africa’s fourth-largest river flows for 1,599 miles (2,574 km) through six countries, from northwestern  Zambia  to  Mozambique , where it enters the Indian Ocean. The mighty Victoria Falls marks the border between the Upper and Middle Zambezi, and there are boats and luxury houseboats offering cruises on both the Upper and Lower Zambezi.

Catamarans and old steamers take nature lovers on the Upper Zambezi, where you are bound to see crocodiles and hippos. Chances are that you’ll also see elephants, antelopes, and big cats on the riverbanks. While the wildlife viewing may be unpredictable, a stellar sunset while sipping sundowners is always guaranteed.

Some ships that operate in shallow water can take passengers much closer to Victoria Falls than bigger ships, which usually take off 3 miles (5 km) upstream. Unfortunately, you still cannot see the falls from there, but you can take a short land trip to explore them and the surrounding landscape. While here, why not take a dip in Devil’s Pool, a natural infinity pool where you can swim to the very edge of the thundering Victoria Falls?

The best time of year to go on a river cruise on the Zambezi River is between May and September. Combine a sunset river cruise through the Lower Zambezi National Park with guided walks through rainforests to get up close and personal with the elephants and observe as many of the 300 recorded species of birds as you can.

river safari in africa

The Congo River

“Going up that river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings. An empty stream, a great silence, an impenetrable forest. […] We penetrated deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness.” Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1902) describes a journey up the Congo River towards the end of the 19th century that continues to inspire avid travelers seeking adventure to go on the same path over a century later.

The second longest river in Africa after the Nile, the second largest river in the world after the Amazon, and the world’s deepest river, the Congo River flows for 2,900 miles (4,700 km) from the Katanga Plateau to the Atlantic Ocean. There are over 4,000 islands in the Congo River basin and the river crosses the Equator twice. And let us not forget that it gives life to the Congo Rainforest, the second largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon.

Cruise the Congo River in a pirogue, traditional dugout canoes, and embark on a journey through one of the world’s least explored corners. Retrace the footsteps of renowned explorers Stanley and Livingston and discover remote villages, barely-touched rainforests, and get the chance to meet some of the last remaining pygmy tribes.

On your way, stop at Ekolo Ya Bonobo to see the bonobo apes that can only be found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a critically endangered species with as few as 50,000 individuals still left in the wild. Here, Lola Ya Bonobo rescues orphaned bonobos and rehabilitates them to be reintroduced to the wild.

Exploring the Congo River by boat is the ultimate river cruising experience and can take several weeks to complete, usually more than 22 days, and is not for the faint-hearted. Shorter trips are also available.

river safari in africa

The Nile, Egypt

The Nile is probably the first thing that comes to mind when mentioning river cruises in Africa. Walk like an Egyptian and cruise the world’s longest river through the heart of Egypt. Although 4,160 miles (6,695 km) from source to mouth, the highest concentration of ancient relics can be found along the stretch of the Nile between Aswan and Luxor. That’s where the most popular cruises sail. The journey between Aswan and Luxor typically takes three to four days to complete and covers approximately 120 miles (200 km). It is combined with land trips and visits to famous archaeological sites like the Karnak Temples, Hatshepsut’s Temple, the Valley of the Queens and the Valley of the Kings.

Longer cruises are available, though less frequent. There are only a few companies that offer six to seven-day cruises that sail north of Luxor to Dendera, one of the best-preserved temples complexes in  Egypt .

Home to one-third of the world’s antiques, immerse yourself in Egypt’s ancient past on a luxury cruise ship or on a felucca, the traditional sailboats of Egypt’s Nile that rely solely on wind power. Make sure you include camel-back rides, visits to the Great Pyramids and add Cairo to your bucket list, too. At the end of the day, lay back and relax on the deck while admiring some of the best sunsets on the planet.

river safari in africa

Niger River, Mali

The third longest river in Africa, the Niger River runs for 2,600 miles (4,180 km) through West Africa before entering the Atlantic Ocean. Despite its charm, major cruise lines do not include the Niger River in their itineraries. Luckily, passenger boats operate on the river between August and mid-December, during the high-water season, and regular ferries set sail from Mopti, Mali’s touristic hub.

The most popular trips on the Niger River are from Mopti to the Dogon villages and Timbuktu. The Cliff of Bandiagara, also known as the Land of the Dogons, is one of the most impressive sites in West Africa and includes 289 villages.

Around 65 percent of Mali is covered in desert and semi-desert, with the Sahara Desert occupying most of the northern half of the country. At the gateway to the Sahara Desert, 12 miles (20 km) north of the Niger River, the fabled ancient city of Timbuktu fights for its very existence and is currently on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger. Nicknamed “The City of 333 Saints” and “The Pearl of the Desert,” Timbuktu is a former Arab-African trade hub that was once synonymous with Africa’s inaccessibility.

river safari in africa

Cruising Lake Malawi

Also known as Lake Nyasa, Lake Malawi is the third largest in Africa and the ninth largest in the world, occupying about one-third of Malawi. It is here that steamer MV Ilala, a relic from the colonial times, has been carrying passengers and cargo across the lake ever since 1951. Nowadays, the ship offers six-day round trips once every week, from Monkey Bay in the southern region of Malawi to Chilumba near the lake’s northern end.

The trip is about 300 miles (480 km) long, and the motor ship makes 13 stops on its way, in the major towns on both Malawi and Mozambique’s coasts, but also on Likoma Island, where David Livingstone established his missionary headquarters.

Steamer MV Ilala can accommodate 120 passengers. It is certainly not a luxury cruise, but it is an African adventure that should not be missed, especially when combined with an off-the-beaten-path safari in Malawi.

river safari in africa

The Senegal River

In West Africa, the Senegal River draws a watery line between Senegal and Mauritania. Here, Bou El Mogdad is an old colonial French steamer dating from 1950 that takes tourists and locals some 125 miles (200 km) up on the river on a seven-day round trip.

Starting from Saint-Louis, a city on the Atlantic coast with charming French colonial architecture, the journey will take you through mangrove forests, lagoons and sand channels, and past open markets with exotic flavors and colors. You will stop in harbors, former trading posts, and in Toucouleur villages.

river safari in africa

On your way, stop at the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary in the Senegal River Delta for a birdwatching safari, a stronghold for more than 1.5 million migratory birds and the third most important ornithological reserve in the world.

African River Safari Destinations (Top Picks)

Posted by Briony Chisholm on May 29 2017 in Adventure Travel & Activities Enquire Now!

Pula! Mvula! In southern and East Africa, rain goes by many different names. That’s because it’s incredibly precious, with many areas going through long periods of drought and dry seasons, when the earth cracks and plants die back and every living thing holds its breath, waiting for the rain.

That, too, is why the rivers that flow through these dry lands are so loved and admired … rivers that create green-lined pathways through arid land. They are life-sustaining and, as such, are a wonderful place to go on safari.

Here we discuss five of the best safari destinations that can include river/wetland activities.

Zambezi River

White Water Rafting on the Zambezi

The great Zambezi river – Africa’s fourth largest – rises in Zambia and makes its way East over 2 500 kilometres, to the Indian Ocean in Mozambique. Along its way it forms a little part of the border between Namibia and Zambia and the whole border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and travels through spectacular African bush, much of it reserve.

Bungee jumping on the Zambezi near Vic Falls

It’s home to many beloved and toothy African animals, most notably crocodiles and hippo, and supplies drinking water to many more, including elephant, antelope and wild cats. At places its wild and filled with currents (see the Vic Falls gorges below), and in others its wide and gently flowing. On our Zimbabwe & Zambezi Exclusive Overland Safari, we spend two idyllic days paddling along the Zambezi from Gwabi to the Chongwe River, passing Mana Pools and plenty of hippos and crocodiles along the way and camping on remote islands.

It’s a gentle paddle at an easy pace and offers incredible sightings of wildlife and birds, undisturbed by any sounds but the flow of the river and the splash of the paddle.

Some of our other tours that can include paddling on the Zambezi:

  • Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe & Kruger Safari
  • Southern Africa Five Country Overland Safari

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls

If wild adventures are your forte, the white water rafting in the gorge below Vic Falls is an absolute must. To put it in perspective: the world’s largest sheet of falling water, at over 5 500 feet wide and 350 feet tall – with an average flow rate of 1 000 m 3 /s – falls into a 360 foot-wide gorge and then zigzags it way through a series of beautiful basalt gorges. The result: a whole lot of fantastically turbulent water and Grade 5 rapids. Perfect for adrenaline junkies.

Hippo in the Zambezi River

If you prefer to keep your heart beating at a regular pace, Vic Falls has plenty more to offer. Marvel at the beauty of the ‘Smoke that Thunders’, go for a flip in a helicopter above the falls or just amble over the bridge and put your foot in Zambia/Zimbabwe.

Some of our safaris that visit Vic Falls include:

  • Explore Zambia & Zimbabwe Lodge Safari
  • Cape Town to Namibia, Botswana & Kruger Overland Safari
  • Cape to Namibia, Vic Falls & Kruger Accommodated Overland

Elephants and calves bathing in the Chobe River, Botswana

The Chobe River runs along the northern part of the Chobe National Park in Botswana and flows into the Zambezi River just above Kazungula Ferry. It creates a beautiful green belt through wild African bush with high concentrations of wildlife.

During the dry winter months, the river is one of the few sources of water, which means spectacular game viewing on cruises along it. Large herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and antelope – to name a few – come down to drink from (and play in!) the river and the birdlife is fantastic.

Chobe Cruise

The Victoria Falls & Hwange Lodge Safar i can include not only a game-viewing cruise along the Chobe River, but also a sunset cruise above Victoria Falls and canoeing on the upper Zambezi!

Other safaris that can include a boat cruise along the Chobe River are:

  • Botswana Wilderness Camping Adventure
  • Cape Town to Serengeti Adventure Safari
  • 13 day Namibia, Chobe & Vic Falls Lodge Safari

Okavango Delta from the air

It’s impossible to put the beauty of the Okavango Delta into words. This huge floodplain that offers visitors waterways filled with hippo, crocs and plenty of other wildlife and birdlife has to be seen to be believed. Eleven km 3 of water spread out across an area of 6,000-15,000 km 2 , depending on the time of year, creating pristine waterways and islands.

Mokoro, Okavango

Paddle your way through the channels and experience Africa, unspoilt by humans and all the noise that comes with them. Instead, listen to the hippos grunting, a huge variety of birds and insects and the gentle splashing of the mokoro pole.

Some of the ABS tours that include the Okavango Delta:

  • Budget Botswana, Namibia & Zambia Lodge Safari
  • Okavango & Savuti Botswana Lodge Safari
  • Kalahari & Okavango Delta Lodge Safari

Lemur

For something a little different, visit Madagascar, a tropical emerald paradise. Surrounded by white beaches and the warm Indian Ocean, the island has large rain forests and wetlands filled with fascinating primates, birds and insects.

Join our Madagascar Luxury Kayaking Adventure and experience the natural beauty of the area while kayaking through the wetlands and lagoons to tucked away beaches through coastal and rain forests. Watch out for the curious eyes of lemurs, reptiles, turtles and crocs.

St Luce

On this trip, there’s also the opportunity for other water-based oceanic activities like snorkelling and whale and birdwatching boat trips. It’s a watery wonderland!

So, while much of Africa is dry, its rivers and wetlands offer many wonderful water-based activities too. Speak to one of our ABS consultants  to find the safari that best suits you.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Serengeti National Park Tanzania

Witnessing the great migration of wildebeests is undoubtedly Serenegti’s most iconic highlight.

But there is much more to enjoy other than the migration of the wildebeests. Serengeti is renowned as one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros) in their natural habitat. Other animals you may see on your safari through Serengeti include zebras, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes and various species of antelopes.

🏨 Explore all your hotel options here

Serengeti is also known for its high concentration of big cats, such as lions, cheetahs and leopards. These are typically elusive, and many people going on safaris do not get an excellent chance to spot them.

Besides the animals, the vast plains of Serengeti, featuring acacia trees, are so calming to look at, especially when they burst into greenery during the rainy season. Whether you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience or you are into wildlife photography, Serengeti offers amazing exploration opportunities you need to experience.

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

African safari Witness The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Maasai Mara on the Kenyan side and the Serengeti on the Tanzanian side are interconnected. If you want to witness the wildebeest migration, you can do it on either side. You will be treated to views of the animals moving across the vast plains from one park to another in search of grazing pastures.

The thing, however, about viewing the migration in Masai Mara is that you may get to see the animals cross the Mara River. If lucky, wildlife photographers may get to catch snaps of crocodiles preying on wildebeests as they cross the river.

Besides the wildebeests, Masai Mara is also home to the Big Five, which includes large populations of lions, elephants, and buffaloes. Cheetahs, leopards, giraffes, hyenas, and various antelope species are also commonly sighted.

There are so many ways to experience the vastness and beauty of the Masai Mara other than riding on safari vans. You can have a bush breakfast, take hot air balloon safaris for panoramic views of the park, visit the Maasai villages around the park for an immersive experience, or watch sunsets from the viewpoints in the park.

The Maasai Mara offers many accommodation options, including luxury lodges, tented camps, and mobile campsites. Many of these accommodations are within or near the reserve, offering convenient access to wildlife viewing areas.

Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Heavy rains also pounded other nations in East Africa, including Tanzania, where at least 155 people were killed, according to the country’s prime minister.

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Here are photographs of the flooding in Kenya:

Swimming through floodwaters to try to rescue people stranded in their homes in Mathare. Most of those displaced in Nairobi live in informal settlements, according to the United Nations.

Residents of Mathare tried to salvage goods from their homes. Many people in Nairobi live in high-density areas that lack proper roads, water or power infrastructure.

Homes in several neighborhoods across the capital were submerged, leading to evacuations.

The torrential rains affected almost half of Kenya’s 47 counties, according to the United Nations.

Flooding inundated entire roadways in Machakos County, about 35 miles southeast of Nairobi.
