Two Lane America has created a masterpiece road trip on the mother road, Route 66. My wife and I traveled in June 2019 from South Florida to discovered how important Route 66 was and still is to this wonderful country

IMG_0272.JPG

Our #1 bucket list trip was absolutely perfect, thanks to Austin Coop. The planning and research can be a bit overwhelming. With Two Lane America you can relax and just enjoy the trip as everything has been planned for you.

We were strangers from Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia, Arkansas, California, and Holland, soon to become friends as we caravaned in our own vehicles from Chicago to Santa Monica on much of old Route 66 with 2LaneAmerica. We worried about nothing except buying gas or incidentals.

EagleRider's World famous Route 66 motorcycle tour travels the original Route 66, known as the "Mainstreet of America" or "Mother Road" . At over 2400 miles long from Chicago to Los Angeles, Route 66 crosses three time zones and 8 States: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Route 66 has been the path of migrants, dreamers, desperadoes and an entire generation of vacationers discovering the way west. The 1950's were the Route 66 glory days, when thousands of cars rode bumper to bumper behind each other to experience the Western frontier. Hotels, motels, gas stations, classic restaurants, and the "New" America sprang up everywhere. Much of Route 66's classic roads, restaurants, gas stations, and nostalgic landmarks are preserved just as they were in the 1950’s. The famous and nostalgic Route 66 is the road created in heaven for motorcycle touring. Simply stated, this is the guided tour of America!

Transform your journey into an exhilarating Tour by selecting one of our incredible Harley models such as the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Touring Edition, Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, Harley-Davidson Street Glide, Harley-Davidson Road Glide, Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic, Harley-Davidson Street Bob, Harley-Davidson Road Glide Ultra, Harley-Davidson Road Glide Touring Edition, or for a different riding experience, choose from our sport touring models like the Yamaha FJR1300, and Yamaha Super Tenere 1200.

route 66 mustang tours

Step outside today and experience mile after magnificent mile of the Windy City. Stand on the corner of Michigan and Adams, marked as the starting point of historic Route 66. Enjoy coffee and a big breakfast at Lou Mitchell’s, a Chicago institution since 1923 and a must for Route 66 travelers. route 66 mustang tours

Chicago – St. Louis / driving distance: 300 mi / 480 km

This morning, pick up your rental car and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the then and now of America along historic Route 66. This legendary old road passes through a variety of pure Americana landscapes and takes in some of the country’s biggest, oldest and most peculiar sites along the way. Begin your journey by following the traditional east-to-west path of Route 66 from Chicago to St. Louis, Missouri, cruising through endless cornfields and flat prairies. En route, don’t miss Wilmington’s most photographed “citizen”, the larger-than-life green Gemini Giant, and Atlanta’s Bunyan Giant, a 19-foot statue of Paul Bunyan holding a giant hot dog. In Springfield, stop at the Cozy Dog Drive-In, the birthplace of the corn dog, and explore the legacy of Abraham Lincoln with a visit to the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Once in St. Louis, the largest city along Route 66, you can follow in the footsteps of legendary explorers by visiting the historic sites found throughout the city including the Gateway Arch, the nation’s tallest monument.

route 66 mustang tours

St. Louis – Springfield / driving distance: 210 mi / 340 km

Continue through the Ozark Highlands of southern Missouri to Springfield, recognized as the birthplace of Route 66. En route, stop at Meramec Caverns, an extensive set of natural limestone caves whose formations and colors are as unique as they are beautiful. Adding to the pleasure of exploring the caves is learning that Jesse James used them as a hideout and took advantage of the underground river to escape through the “back door”.

route 66 mustang tours

Springfield – Tulsa – Oklahoma City / driving distance: 310 mi / 520 km

This morning, cut through the southeastern corner of Kansas on your way to Oklahoma City. The Oklahoma section of Route 66 contains more driveable miles than any other state as well as several miles of the original 9-foot road segment that served Oklahoman families headed west in search of better opportunities during the 1930’s. En route to Oklahoma City, stop to view the beloved 20-foot tall cement Blue Whale in Catoosa, a landmark along Route 66, and the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge in Tulsa, honoring the “Father of Route 66’s” memory and connection to the historic highway. Once in Oklahoma City, the state’s capital, be sure to check out the old Route 66 motels, gas stations and numerous vintage buildings.

route 66 mustang tours

Oklahoma City – Amarillo / driving distance: 260 mi / 420 km

Continue to Amarillo, located in the pancake-flat plains of the Texas Panhandle. This area of Texas was once the buffalo-rich grasslands of the Great Plains, inhabited by bands of Kiowa and Comanche Indians. Stop at the Route 66 Museum in Clinton where you can experience six decades of Route 66 history. See Shamrock’s Tower Station and the U-Drop Inn Café whose towering spire is still a reminder of the booming business it once saw. See the first restored Phillips 66 gas station in McLean, and in Groom the leaning water tower and a 150-foot tall stainless steel cross. Once in Amarillo, be sure to stop at Big Texas Steak Ranch where you can attempt their 72oz. steak challenge.

route 66 mustang tours

Amarillo – Albuquerque / driving distance: 270 mi / 450 km

Before leaving Amarillo be sure to visit Cadillac Ranch. This unique display of art features a row of ten colorfully painted Cadillac cars buried grille first in the ground. Continue to the MidPoint Café in Adrian famous for its “ugly crust” pies. From Adrian you’ll follow Route 66 to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a great taste of the Land of Enchantment.

route 66 mustang tours

The state’s largest city, Albuquerque spreads north and south along the banks of the Rio Grande. Spend the day exploring Downtown Albuquerque’s Central Avenue, a treasure trove of Route 66 landmarks. Historic Old Town offers a taste of New Mexico’s Spanish colonial past while the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, owned by the state’s 19 different Pueblo communities, traces the history of the region’s Native American cultures.

route 66 mustang tours

Albuquerque – Santa Fe – Albuquerque / driving distance: 116 mi / 186 km

To get a true sense of the Old Route 66, today you will detour to New Mexico’s state capital, Santa Fe. Founded on the ruins of an abandoned Indian village and steeped in history, Santa Fe is the oldest Capital in the U.S., and although it lost its place on Route 66 in 1938, it remains one of the most picturesque cities in the state. At one time this was the end of the old Santa Fe Trail, the earliest trade route linking the American frontier back east with the far west. Plan to visit one of Santa Fe’s famous art galleries, art markets, or museums full of traditional and contemporary art, including works by their own Georgia O’Keeffe, or shop for authentic creations you just won’t find anywhere else.

route 66 mustang tours

Albuquerque – Holbrook / driving distance: 260 mi / 420 km

This morning, the state of Arizona welcomes Route 66 travelers with an overwhelming display of trading posts. View huge concrete tepees that stand at the foot of brilliant red-rock mesas en route to Petrified Forest National Park, the only park in the National Park System containing a section of Historic Route 66. Here you will come face-to-face with over 13,000 years of human history and one of the world’s largest and most colorful assemblies of petrified wood, historic structures and archeological sites. Catch a sunset over the Painted Desert from the park’s Kachina Point before heading to Holbrook. Once in Holbrook, stop at the Wigwam Motel whose steel and concrete teepees featuring modern conveniences have welcomed guests since the 1950’s.

route 66 mustang tours

Holbrook – Grand Canyon National Park/Williams / driving distance: 180 mi / 290 km

Continue to Meteor City, a true vintage trading post whose distinctive dome can be seen for miles along this stretch of Route 66. Pass through Flagstaff and Williams en route to Grand Canyon National park, a natural wonder that you simply have to see to believe. Spend the day discovering the distinct South Rim of the Canyon. Stop at one of the numerous overlooks, walk part of the Rim Trail or along the historic Hermit Road. Visit a Photo Hot Spot, or climb to the top of a stone Watchtower for panoramic views that extend over 100 miles on clear days.

route 66 mustang tours

Grand Canyon National Park/Williams – Las Vegas / driving distance: 300 mi / 480 km

Leave the pretty town of Williams and the Grand Canyon behind as you make your way to Seligman, the first stop heading west on the longest uninterrupted stretch of Route 66. Continue through Kingman whose old Route 66 cafés and motels still flourish, to one of Arizona’s hidden treasures, Hoover Dam. Considered the largest single public works project in the history of the U.S., The Hoover Dam straddles the mighty Colorado River, which forms the border between Nevada and Arizona and brings much-needed water and power to the Southwest. Continue to Las Vegas, Nevada, a city that needs no introduction.

route 66 mustang tours

Enjoy a full day Las Vegas style. Walk the famous Las Vegas Strip lined with mega-resorts and flashing neon lights, place a bet at one of the many casinos, dine at world-class restaurants, catch the latest must-see show, shop designer boutiques, ride a rollercoaster, lay by the pool … the list goes on. With so much to do, 24 hours in a day hardly seems like enough.

route 66 mustang tours

Las Vegas – Santa Monica/Los Angeles / driving distance: 290 mi / 470 km

This morning, set out through the Mojave Desert for Calico Ghost Town, Yermo, California’s authentic silver mining town and one of the few original mining camps of the Old West. Rejoin Route 66 in Barstow where a collection of historic photographs and artifacts related to Route 66 and the Mojave Desert Communities are on display at the Route 66 “Mother Road” Museum. Continue through Pasadena, Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills to Santa Monica for a true Hollywood ending to your cross-country journey. Park and venture the last few blocks on foot to view the “End of the Trail” sign on Santa Monica’s Pier. This sign officially marks the western end of historic Route 66.

route 66 mustang tours

Los Angeles/Santa Monica

Spend the day strolling along the beaches of Santa Monica or browsing the adjacent indoor/ outdoor shops at Third Street Promenade. Or, further explore L.A.’s one-of-a-kind destinations, playgrounds of the rich and famous and architectural gems. Universal Studios Hollywood and Anaheim’s original Disneyland Park are also located within easy driving distance.

Arrive Chicago

Not enough days available for the full tour? Why not do Route 66 Hemi from Albuquerque to Los Angeles in just 9 days! See guided itinerary and ask us for the self-guided price.

On arrival at O’Hare Airport, take the hotel shuttle to your hotel. After check in, take in the entertainment, shops and bars nearby, and maybe check out your motorcycle. If you want to discover the “Windy City” of Chicago with all it has to offer, we suggest you arrive a day early and explore at leisure:

Famous blues clubs, Navy Pier, Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), fine dining restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. Take a stroll to the starting point of Historic Route 66 at East Adams St and South Michigan Ave.

Chicago – Springfield, IL

(200 miles)

After breakfast, make your way to the motorcycle pick up and retrieve your ride for your Route 66 Original self-guided motorcycle tour. Next thing you know you’re riding down Historic Route 66 through the cities, small towns and farmlands of Illinois. Follow the Pontiac Trail, as Route 66 used to be known here, to the state capital of Springfield.

Springfield – Rolla, MO

(220 miles)

Today you ride through the picturesque scenery of small town mid-America into the rolling hills of the Ozarks. Your morning begins by meandering through picturesque farming towns and countryside until you arrive at the Mississippi river, the border between Illinois and Missouri. Stop here for the Chain of Rocks Bridge which became a part of original Route 66 in 1936. After lunch, stop at the Missouri Route 66 State Park to learn more about the history of the route in the state. Afterwards, enjoy the hills and valleys twisting through the Ozarks to Jesse James’ hideout at Meramec Caverns. Finally arrive in Rolla for dinner and a good night’s sleep, now you’re only 24 hours from Tulsa!

Oatman Highway on Route 66 Original Orange & Black tour

Rolla – Tulsa, OK

(310 miles)

This morning the road twists, dips, and climbs through dense forests of oak, elm, hickory and redbud. Soon the hills, valleys and twisty roads gradually fade away as you ride through (another) Springfield, Joplin and Carthage until you reach Kansas Be sure to stop in either Galena or Baxter springs, considering there’s just under 14 miles of Route 66 in Kansas. Check out the old train depot in Galena, or the Route 66 welcome centre in Baxter Springs. Then you’ll ride into the gentle bends and hills of Eastern Oklahoma, and finally Tulsa. Enjoy a good night’s rest, it’s been a long but enjoyable day on your Route 66 self-guided motorcycle tour.

Tulsa – Weatherford, OK

(190 miles)

Oklahoma has more miles of Route 66 than any other state, and in better condition. The majority of the day is spent riding the “Old 66” through pasture and prairie. Stop at the Route 66 Interpretive Centre in Chandler, the Round Barn in Arcadia, Seba Station Motorcycle Museum in Warwick, and ride the longest remaining stretch of the original alignments of the route. Further west you’ll ride through El Reno, over the mile-long pony truss bridge near Hydro and end up at your hotel in the ranching and college town of Weatherford.

Weatherford – Amarillo, TX

Start today at the Route 66 museum in Clinton, where you can learn more about the route and its importance in American history, and do a bit of souvenir shopping. Then it’s back on the road, passing over the great plains, through vast cattle ranches and small farming towns as you enter the Texas panhandle. Stop at the iconic art-deco U-Drop Inn in Shamrock, featured in the film “Cars” as Ramone’s Body Shop. Then you’re off across the plains for a well-deserved steak at the Big Texas Steak Ranch in Amarillo. The challenge here is to eat, or attempt to eat, the 72-oz (2 kg) steak dinner in an hour or less. If so it’s free. Are you courageous or crazy enough to try?!

Harley's at Elk City on Route 66

Amarillo – Santa Fe, NM

(300 miles)

First stop, the Cadillac Ranch, an ever-changing art exhibit started in 1974 by a group of eccentric artists called the “Ant farm”. Be sure to bring a can of spray paint, and let your inner hoodlum out and leave your mark on one of the cars (encouraged by the artists).  Then it’s off to Adrian, home of the Midpoint Café and your halfway point. After stopping for a coffee and the best pie on the route, you’ll leave the great plains and head into the natural splendour of the southwest. Riding through the wide open spaces of the high chaparral deserts and prairie into the Rocky Mountains. On your way keep an eye out for Pronghorn Antelope, mule deer and other wildlife. Follow the old Santa Fe cattle drive trail through Pecos National Historic Park and into beautiful Santa Fe, where you will spend the next two nights of your Route 66 self-guided motorcycle tour.

Today is a day of rest and relaxation in one of the oldest and the highest, (2194 m) state capitals in the USA. Explore Santa Fe’s numerous art galleries, speciality shops and museums, all within easy walking distance of our hotel. Or roam around the beautiful downtown plaza’s unique combination of Native American and Spanish colonial architecture. If you want a gentle ride, we recommend the short visit to Taos. Lots of bends to ride as you take the valley road there and the alpine forest road back. Taos is famous as an artist colony and some beautiful art and native American crafts awaiting you. Be sure to sample the local restaurants selection of New Mexican cuisine, a fusion of Mexican and Native American foods.

Santa Fe – Gallup, NM

Time to get back on the road and out into the deserts of the southwest. Ride down into the Rio Grande valley to your first stop for lunch in Old Town Albuquerque. Then head west alongside the Navajo sandstone mesas, through the splendour of New Mexico’s natural beauty, ending the day in the old railroad town and Native American stronghold of Gallup. Be sure to stop by the historic El Rancho hotel for dinner and a look around the property.

Mid point on Route 66 original motorcycle tour

Gallup – Williams, AZ

(240 miles)

Today on your Route 66 self-guided motorcycle tour you head into Arizona’s spectacular deserts. The first stop is Painted Desert & Petrified Forest National Park, take your time riding through the park, stopping to take in its natural geologic multi-coloured hues and colours. Afterwards it’s a short ride into Holbrook to see the Wigwam Motel’s tepee-shaped rooms. Then it’s time for lunch and some time to “Take it Easy” with the Eagles, and “standin’ on the corner” in Winslow, Arizona.  Finally, continuing onward to your hotel in the quaint town of Williams, last Route 66 town by-passed by interstate 40 and gateway to the Grand Canyon.

(ride out, 120 miles )

Today is Grand Canyon day! You can take the train from Williams or ride the 55 miles to the canyon’s south rim. Here you’ll have time to explore the national park’s numerous viewpoints and attractions, and be sure to go to Desert view on the Eastern edge of the park for the best views from the stone tower. We recommend a helicopter ride for a bird’s eye view and to appreciate just how massive it really is. Take a sunset ride back to your hotel. This will be a day you’ll always remember!

Williams – Needles, CA

(250 miles)

Start the day by taking a short ride through the town of Ash Fork, down Crookton Road into the small town of Seligman for the best breakfast on the route at Lilo’s Westside Café. Be sure to give yourself some time for shopping at its many Route 66 shops. Afterwards, make your way to Hackberry and Kingman, the self-described ‘Capital of Route 66’, for lunch. Then comes what we like to call the ‘curviest’ part of the Route, Stigraves Pass via the Oatman Highway, a twisting & turning roller-coaster ride over the Black Mountains. Stop in Oatman to see one of the few remaining authentic old west gold mining towns. Bring some carrots or buy some alfalfa cubes from one of the local shops to feed the local burros, left behind when the miners abandoned their claims.  Get cooled off before descending into the scorching heat of the Colorado river’s Mohave valley and Needles, California.

Petrified Forest on Orange & Black's Route 66 self-guided motorcycle tour

Needles – Victorville, CA

(175 miles)

You start the day by riding around the Spirit Mountains into the dramatic & desolate hot Mojave Desert. Take a break in the oasis in Fenner before making your way to Amboy, located in the middle of nowhere, to check out Roy’s Motel and Café. Continue on to a lunch stop in Barstow and then onward to see Elmer’s Bottle Tree ranch. After a hot day riding through the desert your hotel’s refreshing pool beckons you to take a cool dip and relax before your last day of riding tomorrow.

Victorville – Los Angeles

(115 miles )

Your big adventure comes to an end today with your ride to Los Angeles. Much of the road has been lost, but the end of the Mother Road, Santa Monica Pier, is worth the wait. Park your motorcycle, have some lunch on the pier, and then dip your toes in the Pacific Ocean, this really is journey’s end! Take your time going to the end marker plaque at Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, and then wander through downtown Santa Monica. All that remains, the ride to the motorcycle drop-off and saying goodbye to your bike for the past two weeks. Get to your hotel and enjoy a nice celebratory dinner and drinks and some well-earned rest, You made it all the way on your Route 66 self-guided motorcycle tour!

Depart Los Angeles

Time to pack your bags and head home, filled with the experiences and memories. We hope to see you back for another great tour. This is end of the road – for now!

<p>There are an estimated 2,000 abandoned and forgotten ghost towns in Oklahoma. Many of these towns sprang up from the land run and oil boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s, respectively. While it’s hard to say if any of these Oklahoma towns are actually haunted, they are, at the very least, filled with the remains of the past. With that said, if you love history or ghost hunting in rural mining communities, you should add these towns to your travel list. Kingman, Arizona

There are so many sights to see in Kingman that you may need to schedule a few extra days. But one of the highlights is the Arizona Route 66 Museum, located in the Historic Powerhouse.

<p>Route 66 is pretty much THE symbol of America’s spirit of adventure and freedom. It was one of the first national highways for motor vehicles in the United States, established in 1926, and it ran from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles. It crossed eight states and three time zones, all the while passing through some of the most diverse landscapes in the country. It also connected some smaller towns and rural communities that otherwise would have been isolated from the rest of the nation (as Mater and Lightning McQueen so wonderfully showed us).</p> <p>Route 66 became an icon in American popular culture. It had nicknames like the “Mother Road”, and the “Main Street of America”. Many people drove along Route 66 during the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II when a huge country-wide migration to the West began. Later, it became a popular destination for tourists, bikers, and road trippers who wanted to experience authentic “Americana” along the way.</p> <p>Route 66 was gradually replaced by the Interstate Highway System, however, and the last section of Route 66 was decommissioned in 1985. However, many parts of the original route still exist and are preserved as historic landmarks or designated as scenic byways. </p><p>Sharks, lions, alligators, and more! Oatman, Arizona

Oatman has a fascinating history, much of it revolving around the mining industry. However, it was also a stop along the original Route 66 and has a surprising collection of restaurants and shops today.

<p><strong>Amount of February Precipitation: </strong>2.49"<br><strong>Precipitation Level:</strong> Above average</p>

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

It's easy to follow the scenic byway through Oklahoma City, thanks to the 200 signs. One of the main stops along the way is the Milk Bottle building. You may also want to spend time visiting the Tower Theatre or a few of the classic gas stations.

Seligman, Arizona

Take a step back in time visiting Seligman. While the town isn't big, it boasts a surprisingly large collection of restaurants and gift shops.

<p>In western Lincoln County are the remains of an interesting little town called Fallis. You can find it on a paved county road five miles northwest of Wellston. The town was an agricultural center, railroad, and oil community. But steam engines replaced the need for the Fort Smith and Western Railroad that connected Fort Smith and Guthrie. After the transition, it rebranded as an arts community, becoming home to several famous writers, including Poet Laureate of Oklahoma Jenny Harris and Vingie E. Roe, who wrote Western novels. By 2012, only 27 residents remained, along with a fire station and 20 volunteer firefighters. Visitors can visit the old school, hotel, cemetery, wrecked school bus, and vacant homes.</p><p>Sharks, lions, alligators, and more! Testimonials

Route 66

A Route 66 Welcome!

Rhys Martin – Tulsa, Oklahoma

As the President of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, I meet with many tour groups from around the world that are experiencing Route 66, and realizing a journey that, for many – has been a lifelong dream.

I’ve had the pleasure of being part of several Gilligan’s Route 66 Tours as a local guide.

No other tour I’ve encountered has approached Route 66 with such attention to detail and care for the traveler’s experience.

The ‘separate but together’ approach allows each couple to travel at their own pace, yet still have the larger communal experience that makes a road trip so wonderful. You won’t worry about what – or who – you might be missing. It’s all provided for you.

If you want to see Route 66, see it with Gilligan’s. It’s a trip you’ll never forget.

German Route 66 Tour

Germany (2019 tour)

What a trip!

Travelling the Route 66 with Gilligans was a perfect choice for us. Sam´s organization of the trip was excellent. For many regions he engaged local tour guides, who accompanied the group for a while and provided every information that could be of interest.

The chosen accommodations were perfect too – sometimes we spend the night in typical Route 66 hotels with their yesterday´s charm, on other days we enjoyed modern equipment as swimming pools or laundry services.

Summarizing this journey we can say, that we have not only seen all the attractions you find in any Route 66 guidebook. The Gilligans tour let us immerse into the world of Route 66.

Last but not least we want to mention that we could strike up new friendships with some very nice New Zealand people, who gave us Germans a very warm welcome within their “Kiwi-community”.

Thank you all for the great time we spent together on the Route 66!

Kiwis on Route 66

Tricia and David

Upper Hutt, NZ (2019 tour)

Travelling Route 66 with Gilligans and other like minded Kiwi adventurers was an awesome experience.

A lifelong wish had always been to drive this iconic road, to meet the people who live beside it and to take in its breathtaking scenery.

Safe in the knowledge that help was never far away, we were free to explore…

Gilligans Route 66 Tour is never far from our thoughts and we often reminisce about our fond memories of this iconic Highway and our spectacular holiday.

Tauranga, NZ (2019 Tour)

Firstly, thanks for being a great guide and taking care of us on our 2019 tour.

The itinerary, including driving hours and breaks along with quality accommodation and flexibility in the options were brilliant.

What made the trip so exciting was that every day was completely different from the day before.

You took great care and attention with the fundamentals (safety, itinerary, meal stops and recommendations), which then made it easy for us to truly enjoy the places and sights you’ve shown us.

Auckland, NZ (2018 tour)

Route 66 was always on our bucket list. Originally planned to do it on a motorbike, but when we realised the miles that tour covered in one day and the short timeframe of the trip we decided to look elsewhere.  Our friends that we were doing the trip with found Gilligans advertisement and we are so glad they did.  Best decision we ever made!

The whole experience was just fabulous. Not only driving the old Route 66 roads wherever possible, but the people Sam introduced us to along the way.  We even got to watch a baseball game in Chicago (had to have a hotdog at the game!)  The Fun Run from Seligman to Kingman was one of the highlights of our trip (NZ won the teams event for 2018).  During nearly a month together, friendships developed, and contacts were kept up after we arrived home.

We can’t recommend Gilligans highly enough – they deliver on everything they say they will.

Sam looks after you all like a mother hen and nothing is too much trouble – even with a GPS we still managed to go down the odd wrong road and Sam was always there to put us right!  Did I mention we drove a Mustang – love at first sight!

Go explore Route 66 with Gilligans, you won’t ever regret it.

Kiwis on Route 66

Gore, NZ (2018 tour)

Born and bred Southlanders, farming near Gore we researched different tours of 66 for about four years. We gave our teenage kids the farm for a month, and put our faith in Gilligans – Wow they seriously did not disappoint.

The years of work that must have gone into getting a tour to flow the way it did, is AMAZING.

We both look back now and enjoy the memories along with the focus that was on staying on and true to the original road more than any other tour (even when it looked like the overgrown parts might scratch the car)

We’re blown away by what Gilligans fits into 26 days.

It was: Simply the Best!

Kiwis on Route 66

Tony and Diane

Opotiki, NZ (2017 tour)

Gilligans was recommended to me by a friend who had researched a number of available tours for Route 66. After speaking with Sam, I was happy to book knowing that it was a tour organised by Kiwis for Kiwis.

This was a trip I had wanted to do for some time and it far exceeded our expectations on every level. It was a fantastic experience!

We had so much fun and we saw so much more than we could have imagined! The many friendships made with our fellow travelers was an added bonus!

I would certainly recommend Gilligans to anyone thinking of doing this trip.

Thanks again!

Auckland, NZ (2017 tour)

Every day was an adventure… Bouncing along some of the old dusty roads, the amazing broken-down old cars piled up in the back yards and meeting the locals in the old diners.

Sam detailed everything with the GPS and the Route-book to perfection. We would retire to bed each night buzzing with what we would encounter on our next day’s excursion.

If anyone is considering doing Route 66, all we can say is you’ve got to go with Gilligans – there is none better.

We made some amazing friends which we still keep in touch with, and we could quite honestly love to do it all over again. AMAZING.

‘Auckland, NZ (2017 tour)

Gilligans’ tour of Route 66 is SO much more than a holiday: It’s an experience – one that we’re still re-living to each other (and to anyone else who will listen) months after getting home. What’s more, we’ll still be talking about our Route 66 tour for years to come!

I have to admit though; despite the trip being on our ‘bucket list for years, I wondered if it would be more of a ‘boys trip’ (with the girls following the guys around numerous car museums) I couldn’t have been more wrong!

The whole trip, from start to finish far exceeded my (and our) expectations. It was hand on heart the best trip we’ve ever done, and we’ve (collectively) traveled the world!

Kiwis on Route 66

Grant and Elizabeth

Auckland, NZ (2016 tour)

This was more than just a tour; it was one of life’s great experiences which gave us dozens of dinner table stories to share with our friends at home for years to come.

Sam has not just cobbled together an amazing array of interesting places to visit, but also unique people to meet, sights to see, sounds to hear & different things to eat. Just don’t expect to see a lot of vegetables on the menus in middle America!

Sam is an unflappable organiser who quickly sorts out any bumps in the road without fuss. He quickly moulded our group together resulting a fun journey and long-term friendships.

Gilligans Tours has our absolute endorsement.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018
  • Monismith2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles it was very enjoyable it was very interesting seeing things we saw walking around from the bus. so much more to see. we had a lot better view of the attractions from the height of the bus.also the bus was reasonable slow which gave us time enough for photos. it stopped at sparrow hill for 10 minutes for picture taking Read more Written September 20, 2018
  • fati666222 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to see Moscow We did both routes but if you have little time then only do the red route. Its very informative and it takes you to the important sights. The staff on the bus are very friendly and helpful. Read more Written August 20, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

"The Greatest Trip of my life!"

Hello Wil and Erin. Just a short note to thank you for the ‘BEST VACATION EVER’. Both Brian and Andy were exceptionally professional and it is fair to say that that trip would not have been as good without the professional and friendly banter between the group and the guides. They were well able to cater for the differences in the group and this aided the holiday. The locations, lodgings and roads traveled matched and, sometimes, exceeded our expectations. On at least two occasions the accommodations were part of our dreams. ( Log cabin on a lake ) Read More

ROUTE 66 MOTORCYCLE TOUR OPTIONS / DESCRIPTIONS

Pre Rt 66 Trip to Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee – or – Milwaukee Start Option – add to any tours This extra day pre trip is available as an option on all our Route 66 tours.  Adds 1 or 2 days to trip. Or Start the tour in Milwaukee, visit the Harley Museum, pick up the bikes, ride with the group to Chicago.

Harley-Davidson 115th Anniversary Celebration Museum Rally Route 66 Motorcycle Tour from Milwaukee Part 1: We meet up for a few days of celebration at the Harley Museum in Milwaukee.  Then we get our bikes and ride to Chicago. Part 2: From Chicago we do the Route 66  Chicago to Los Angeles Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Tour

Option 1 – 15 Day 14 Night – Traditional  Classic Route 66 Motorcycle Tour – can add Milwaukee Harley Museum Option This is the Traditional Route 66  Chicago to LA Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Tour.  Ride Free includes almost a full day at The Grand Canyon on this motorbike trip across America, or explore the area on your bike that day.  And, we arrive early to Las Vegas so you have a full afternoon and night in Las Vegas, or we can ride the Red Rock Canyon by Vegas or The Valley of fire. Optional helicopter ride at Grand Canyon. This is what most motorcycle tour companies run, but we highly suggest the 16 day or 17 day tour.  They turn the trip from a mission feel where you just don’t have the time you wish you had every day, into the motorcycle tour experience you were hoping for.  It is not that our 16 day Rt 66 route is longer in mileage, we just give you more time to see the things you came to see, and not be exhausted like the other tours we see on the road.

Option 2 – 16 Day 15 Night – Ultra Route 66 Motorcycle Tour – or 17 day Ultimate Explorer – can add Milwaukee Harley Museum Option This is the traditional Route 66 Chicago to Los Angeles Motorcycle Tour, BUT with a couple of extras. We explore Rt 66 where most tours ride right by, and we add days so we have time to explore more without days being too long on our motorcycles.  # Wil highly recommends this over any 15 day Rt 66 Route. We add a day in the middle of the trip = shortens the riding days.  Our 15 day is the industry standard, but there are some very long riding day, if you add a riding, it will make the 3 long days into 4 nice days.   Well worth it.  Or add 2 extra riding days for a 17 day Route 66 Motorcycle Tour, and is even more relaxing.   This is how Wil would choose to do it every time.  You are only doing this once, believe me now or later… ## Note:  don’t let the mileage fool you, much of our trip exploring  is slow moving and takes a long time.  And, you don’t want to miss all the history and attractions.

Option 3 – 13 Day 12 Night – Chicago to Las Vegas Rt 66 Motorcycle Tour – can add Milwaukee Harley Museum Option This motorcycle trip across America is the same as the Traditional Chicago to LA Route 66 Harley-Davidson motorcycle tour, but we ride our motorbikes Chicago to Las Vegas on Route 66.

Option 4 – 10 Day 9 Night – Chicago to Albuquerque Rt 66 Motorcycle Tour – can add Milwaukee Harley Museum Option This motorcycle trip across America is the same as the Ultra  Chicago to LA Route 66 Harley-Davidson motorcycle tour, but we ride our motorbikes Chicago to Santa Fe / Albuquerque on Route 66.

Option 5 – 9 Day 8 Night – Albuquerque to Los Angeles Rt 66 Motorcycle Tour This motorcycle trip across America is the same as the Ultra Chicago to LA Route 66 Harley-Davidson motorcycle tour, but we ride our motorbikes Albuquerque / Santa Fe  to Los Angeles on Route 66. Option 5B – 10 day 9 Night – We go to Santa Fe also on this trip.
