Eco-tourism is one such activities which provide a solution by creating awareness and concern for the environment among both the tourist and local people of the region.

Also, the local skills could be developed and explored. The traditional and indigenous knowledge, along with scientific development can be explored.

Eco tourism Hub by itself, which talks about the tourism aspects of the context, creating a cultural Hub point which gives a platform for the villagers as well as the essence of the vernacular for the tourist.

The brief of the concept is to design an eco-tourism hub for the region of KHONOMA (Asia’s first green village) and the proximity near the region. Keeping in mind the local traditions, culture, art and Architecture .The design brief put an emphasis on the articulation of said traditions and their interpretation in modern times without losing the essence of the vernacularity.

KHONOMA is an Angami Naga village located about 20 km west from the state Capital, Kohima, Nagaland. The terrain of the village is hilly, ranging from gentle slopes to steep and rugged hillsides. The hills are covered with lush forestland, rich in various species of flora and fauna.

HORNBILL International Festival which is being celebrated for 10 days every year near this proximity which also creates a benchmark of this village.

This thesis talks about vernacular settlement which can achieve sustainability through planning, orientation, materials and architectural practices evolved from long time due to the socioeconomic, climatic and environmental factors of the Region

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

•To create an opportunity to the local people as well as for the tourist to get the essence of the context, keeping alive the essence of the context. •To design a better vision for tomorrow by keeping the Essence of the local regional context.

•Reprioritize the usage of the site based on the needs of the site demands. •To make the space a centre of public interaction and activities that reflects the people of the region.

•To engage the people by creating a hub in the village where they can learn, educate and understand each other. •To make use of the site’s assets in terms of creating a landmark for the urban fabric of Kohima people as well.

DESIGN BRIEF + PROGRAMME

The village of Khonoma (Asia’s first green village). As being said that the context of the site is a tourist spot and as the tourism is increasing each year people from around the world are travelling to see this beautiful village and the plus point is that there are many Tourism near the village which clearly states that there is a need for Eco-Tourism Hub in this arena.

Eco tourism is one such activities which will create an activities for the region. The local People gets the opportunity to expose their skills their economy to the tourist, which can create an important part of the hub.

The site will be developed with different types of components: 1. Weekly markets for the villagers, craft shops, Exhibition shops: where the villagers can get exposed and increase their growth of the economy. The market will run only on the basis of once in a week where they can sell all their organic crops or vegetables.

2. Museum: To reflect their culture, tradition and religion also to promote their legacy.

3. Workshop activities: where the tourist can educate the villagers and spread awareness and learn from one another.

The villagers can showcase their skills and even export their talents.

4. Accommodation unit for the tourist people: A home stay feeling accommodation unit for the tourist.

5.Library: It will provide a better exposure for the young generation of the surrounding villages.

6. O.A.T: Cultural program and festival season of recreational space.

DESIGN CONCEPT /APPROACH

The main challenge of design was a Site, which is having area of 92268sq.m. and facing NORTH To EAST direction also having contour difference of 40 meter. Main approach is to analyse with the existing contour and play with the levels. The existing site having contour along the river stream and the bridge is the only approach to the site.

Considering all the challenges, the design was to make ‘imperfect’ spaces with organic dynamism like villages.

With the start of the design development every space and area of the site were divided from part to whole. where every part of the space were defined according the use of the function like the open weekly market ,food stall ,craft shop ,museum ,library, OAT, Workshop area and the Accommodation unit which were segregated from each other but it was connected according to the function and use of the space.

Every function of the spaces were connected as per the user’s inferences. The general restaurant was at the core of the main area, the open market area was segregated totally from those main activities like the library, museum, workshop area, OAT and the Museum.

Although they are two different things we sense their interrelationship and emotional bond. Something very organic yet dynamic to be expressed by the site. The environment to be very vernacular with use of the roof of MORUNG style keeping alive the essence of the Region.

The Morung (or the traditional community house) at Khonoma Village. Acting as an educational institution, A Morung is where youngsters would gain their first few lessons of cultural & traditional knowledge through folk music, dance, folk tales and oral traditions. During the time of war, they were also used as used as a guard-house.

Design used the symbolism of that area through Morung.

Understanding Impacts of Cultural Tourism on Sustainability of Rural Architecture in Three Villages of Bursa

This paper aims to describe the consequences of cultural tourism for sustainability of rural architectural heritage of three villages, named as Misi, Gölyazı, and Tirilye, in Bursa. For this purpose, natural and architectural values in each of these three villages are described in detail, while mentioning the importance of a sustainable rural development plan, which would provide qualified advertisement and prevent destruction of cultural tourism. Before explaining the method of the study, a theoretical framework, including both concepts and legal aspects about the issues of cultural tourism and rural heritage, is given in detail. Afterwards, values and potentials of selected case studies are given while also evaluating the problems and threats on their sustainability. It concludes with discussion on findings that includes results and recommendations, in order to improve the values and potentials of a historic village against touristic threats and problems. Hence, this study is essential as investigating the challenges of tourism in conservation of rural areas in Bursa, known as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites (WHS) in Turkey, while explaining the benefits of sustainability in rural development together with increasing interest and public awareness in related architectural and natural heritage. In Turkey’s tourism centre, Antalya, within the framework of country’s tourism policies, other than Sun-Sea- Sand trilogy, encouragement of alternative tourism possibilities has been brought to the agenda. Concepts like eco- tourism, upland tourism, congress tourism have been developed, however as country and province, Cultural heritage tourism has remained as a potential which cannot be used efficiently. The purpose of this announcement is to put forward the proposal in order to bring in one of Antalya’s rural settlement areas, Elmalı, in the context of Natural and Cultural Heritage wealth. Being established in the proximity of Elmalı Mountain and reflecting the culture of Anatolia, Elmalı is an old settlement place with it’s historical houses, narrow streets and old Ottoman markets. The region carries the magnificence of the past to our recent days and it assumes a great tourism potential with its climate, natural beauties and Cedar Forests. Elmalı takes place in the rural region and to the question of ‘’How should Sustainable Planning be?’’ in the context of tourism and protection, application of the relevant international codes have been used as the method with the Presentation of Cultural Tourism and Cultural Heritage by making the assessments of powerful and weak sides of the region. In Elmalı, not having adequate number of touristic facilities such as the ones for accommodation and vacation, inadequate publicity, transportation difficulty from the main tourism centre and not being able to present the possessed natural, historical and cultural heritage assets within the framework of a concept have prevented the development of natural and cultural heritage in terms of tourism. Tourists come here on daily basis and they mostly continue their ways without accommodating here. With a sustainable planning to be prepared, nature, history and cultural protection, regional progress, social development and economy will be influenced positively in the result of publicity of the region, it’s application to tourism within the framework of protection, protection of authenticity, formation of a self-sufficient economical cycle, formation of sustainable presentation interpretation and by building up accommodation and social facilities.

Tourism is one of the most important sectors that stimulate the development of cities in terms of space and economy, provide their development and contribute to the promotion of the international scene. Along with globalization, there are many changes in the tourism sector as well as many other sectors in the world. Unplanned settlement and excessive capacity utilization resulting from mass tourism have had negative effects on cities. For this reason, new tourism alternatives have started to be developed in the context of the sustainable tourism concept in order to reduce negative effects on cities. New tourism trends in the world are developing in the direction of history, health, nature, culture and rural tourism depending on changing request. Alternative tourism types serve much more for the purpose of sustainable tourism than mass tourism. Sustainable tourism can be expressed as preserving and sustaining regional and local attractions as a source. In this respect, cultural heritage values have great potential for the sustainable tourism. People produce culture and these cultures differ depending on time and geography. When time is added to human actions as a separate factor, the concept of antagonistic inheritance comes out. After a certain period of time over the actions, what remains a legacy. Cultural heritage is a group of resources that distinguish the day-to-day values, beliefs, knowledge, and traditions as an expression and reflection. The cultures are witnesses to the next generations of themselves, the dates of their emergence. In this respect, the protection of cultural heritage means the protection of the past of the societies. Thus, the sustainability of cultural diversity can be ensured. Culture, which is a sum of man's production, includes tangible and non-tangible aspects. The article will explore the reciprocal impact of the intangible cultural heritage with the tourism sector. The intangible cultural heritage is a cultural memory born of the need to protect everything that humanity has contributed, experienced, and daily delivered to nature since its existence. Traditional handicrafts are an element of the cultural heritage that manifests itself with such features as common identity, emotion, and sense of belonging, and the cultural memory formed by the codes of this heritage. Istanbul city was covered in the article. Istanbul's own handicrafts, traditional production and cuisine and so on. the elements of intangible cultural heritage have been examined in support of the historical architectural background and suggestions have been made in order to increase the tourism potential of the city by ensuring the sustainability of the values of intangible cultural heritage. Rural tourism is a type of tourism based on natural resources, which is intertwined with rural settlements. Due to many positive influences, the importance of it for tourism is emerged well day-by-day. Different climates, natural environments and different cultures all around the world guide this tourism type. Rural tourism has a great role in the protection of natural and cultural heritage and the introduction of it to the world. For this reason, rural tourism is a tourism type compatible with sustainable tourism concept. The introduction of rural tourism examples in the various parts of the world, with its natural surroundings, architecture and cultural structure, will contribute to the development of rural tourism and its sustainability. Within this study; Obasya rural tourism accommodation facility located in the rural part of Manisa province in Turkey and having a rich tourism potential, has been examined. It has been deemed worthwhile to study the facilities because of their natural and cultural resource values, having the examples of original architecture suitable for rural-village tourism, containing areas with unique life style and the products of handicrafts they own. It is considered that this facility is an important example for the evaluation of rural tourism and it is thought that it will make a significant contribution to the literature. This study, which is made in the region, shows how the potential in rural areas is evaluated for regional development.

CULTURAL HERITAGE SUSTAINABILITY WITH THE PERSPECTIVE OF LOCAL PEOPLE: THE CASE OF HISTORICAL AYVALIK HOUSES

Although the origins of culture go a long way back when compared to tourism, culture and tourism are directly related with each other. All tangible and intangible cultural heritage values are the basis of tourism supply as cultural attractions. For this reason, cultural values are extremely important in the increase of tourism demand for any region. Therefore, these cultural values which are inherited from different civilizations must be protected with a sustainable perspective. In the absence of sustainability, these mysterious attractions will soon disappear. In this context, the study aimed to explore the sustainability of cultural heritage values from the public point of view. The area of the work was determined as Ayvalık houses remaining from the Greeks and considered as important cultural heritage values. The sample of the research is the people living in historical Ayvalık houses. . This study was prepared with qualitative method and interview technique was used as data collection tool. As a result, it is found that it is forbidden to make any amendments other than minor modifications in order to preserve the characteristics of the historic houses. There are serious sanctions in case of changes in houses; but the inspections are inadequate. In addition, it has been determined that people have to sell their homes despite their desire because of the cost of caring for the houses. Also it was revealed that since the summer residents who bought houses outside Ayvalık neglected to care for the whole year, the houses were severely damaged and eventually left to the fate of themselves.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .  

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region. 

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

• The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
• International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
• Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
• The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
• The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
