  • Msmikey 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Odyssey Safari Trip - Con This trip, on paper, sounds like it'll be fantastic. It's more expensive than other boats that do basically the same itinerary, so we questioned this when we booked the tickets. I was told, and asked specifically, is this a party boat? Does it have loud blaring music? The reason for my queries was that we wanted a relaxing day at sea to swim and enjoy the beautiful coastline. I was categorically assured that this was an upmarket cruise, and there was none of that type of stuff and we would be served premium food and beverages. To begin, the boat seating areas and decks resemble a 2 star hotel! The entire area is basic. The two hosts, emcees, cruise directors were absolutely yelling into the microphones (primarily in Russian) for 75% of the journey, and it was loud! The entire duration resembled some second rate Eurovision hosts trying to be entertaining. The music was so loud during parts of the cruise that you could literally not hear the people sat right beside you. Well over half the boat was rolling their eyes, and even moving downstairs to avoid this noise. There was then a conga line that went through the decks of the boat like we're at a holiday camp. This is not what was sold to us, and from reactions most people on the boat. The company knows that once you're on board you're stuck. So they say one thing to some - party fun cruise - and something different to others - upmarket relaxing journey. You can't do both. The food was average at best. The wine offered was cheap and warm. They were actively encouraging people to drink up like we're at a university party (at 11am) and then saying you can jump off any deck of the boat - even the top floor. We watched as one visibly intoxicated man jumped off the boat while we were boarding tenders at the end of the cruise, and was trying to board and struggling as the ladders had been removed. It's only a matter of time till this type of irresponsible behaviour comes back to haunt them. Finally, aside from the captain and the cook, the staff were not pleasant! I asked for an ice cube (singular) for my wine and was told that I couldn't have one as there were none spare and it was cold enough!! I asked about snorkel equipment - which is usually standard on these cruises - and they didn't have any, so no chance at seeing the shipwreck! I asked for the music to be turned down a notch, as I literally was screaming to hear anyone - I was told if I didn't like it, I could go downstairs and sit inside! I found every interaction with the two hosts as brusk, aloof, and bordering on rude. The cruise we were on was primarily Russian, which is fine. However, we were definitely made to feel like the odd ones out, rather than just making it an enjoyable day for everyone. I think that you need to do your research on these cruises if you're in Cyprus. We paid the exact same amount for this calamity of a cruise as we did for a 3 hour private boat hire with captain at Latchi harbour near Paphos! It was fantastic. Again, the captain and cook were great. The two host staff need to go back to customer service training! Don't spend a lot on this cruise expecting anything great, as it's average - at best! • 291dariuszk 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Safari trip We spent 5 hours of sea cruising from Larnaka towards Famagusta ghost city. Some remarks before you decide: > too small sun deck with (perhaps) 15 sun beds (not too much for a ship carrying over than 100 tourists). General rule is: first 15 visitors get best option :( (no such info in brochure) > poor sound system, you will only hear good when you stay on 2nd dock, close to the guide (pity to say, most of the time the descriptions of attractions were provided in Russian language with some small remarks in English) > 3 stops for swimming (zenobia, clifs, sea caves) > decent boat equipment > poor variety of soft drinks (Fanta, Pepsi, Sprite from 2 l bottles... ) > medium food quality (salads, rice, pasta OK but chicken was mainly bones - and it is not first time when I read previous comments) > trip is 1 way only. A way back is a bus trip... (no info in brochure) If I wouldn't have been sailing with wave dancer from Paphos, I would rate 4... Euros and we were left disappointed, hot and totally bewildered by the whole experience so make sure you know exactly what you will be getting before embarking on one of their trips, only 15 sunbeds aboard the boat and the sundeck was chock a block with other people We were only aboard the boat for 4 1/2 hours NOT 7 1/2 as we were told at time of booking Read more Written 10 October 2018

Cruises from/to Larnaca, Cyprus

Larnaca, cyprus cruise port.

  • Visitors who are interested in learning about the history of the city, should pay a visit to Ancient Kition that is covered by the present-day Larnaca. The ancient city-kingdom has largely been excavated and is a site of particular historical interest.
  • Guests who are interested in the historical background of the city, should take the time to visit the Larnaca Fort. The structure lies on the Southern end of the Finikoudes promenade, which was built in 1398 and underwent reconstruction in 1625 under the Ottoman rule.
  • Those who are interested in visiting the region's spiritual landmarks should take the time to visit the Hala Sultan Tekke because it stands at the start of Larnaca's Turkish quarter and has been largely unused since 1974 when the Muslim community left.
  • Nature lovers and birdwatchers alike, should take the time to pay a visit to Larnaca Salt Lake. It is located to the West of the city and is widely known for being the home of flamingoes in winter when the lake fills up.

How to see the best of northern europe on a scandinavian cruise.

Cruise ship passengers enjoy the view of Sweden’s Stockholm archipelago from the Royal Caribbean ... [+] ship ‘Serenade of the Seas.’

If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered.

Such a trip offers the opportunity to sample various Scandinavian travel highlights , whether you prefer the Scandinavian capitals, the stunning Norwegian fjords, or soaking up the atmosphere of beautiful islands and historic ports in the Baltic Sea.

Popular Scandinavian Cruise Itineraries

Many different types of itinerary can be advertised as Scandinavian cruises. Typically, they focus on the Nordic capital cities. Some may also include the highlights of the Baltic Sea region, including the Baltic countries and ports in the north of Germany and Poland.

With popular Norwegian fjords cruises together with midnight sun and northern lights tours to the north of Norway also available, there is a lot of diversity in Scandinavian cruises.

Scandinavian Capitals : Cruise itineraries starting in the U.K. or Germany and calling in at two or even all three of Oslo, Stockholm, and Copenhagen have long been popular.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

Rudy giuliani and mark meadows indicted in arizona fake electors case, tupac shakur s estate challenges drake over ai vocals in kendrick lamar diss song.

The Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark, is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers ... [+] visiting Scandinavia.

Helsinki is often included on such itineraries. If you want to explore modern Scandinavia while gaining access to some of the region’s best museums, such an itinerary is a perfect choice.

Such itineraries tend to be shorter, and are a great introduction to both cruising and Scandinavia, with limited sea days and plenty to see and do while in port.

Baltic Sea : Longer Scandinavian itineraries often include stops at Baltic Sea islands and ports. The beautiful Estonian capital city, Tallinn, or the Latvian capital, Riga, are particular highlights, as are ports on the northern coastline of Germany and Poland.

For those interested in Viking history, look out for smaller ship itineraries featuring Visby on the wonderful island of Gotland .

One such trip is this 12-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises, which includes a visit to both Visby and Tallinn. Other highlights include a visit to Stockholm and Copenhagen, including an overnight stop in the latter.

The old city walls of Visby on Gotland island, a popular cruise port.

Norwegian Fjords : By far the most variety can be found in the Norwegian fjords region , with almost all major cruise lines operating at least some itineraries here. Although port calls in Flåm and Geiranger will soon be severely limited, many alternative ports will still be able to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Whether you prefer the action-packed ships of Royal Caribbean or MSC, or the smaller ships that can sail along narrower fjords, there will be a Norwegian fjords itinerary for you.

Following the recent rise in popularity of the region as a cruising destination, the fjords season has extended, with trips available as early as April and as late as September.

British line P&O Cruises operates its relatively new megaship Iona in the fjords region for much of that period, with regular departures from Southampton on a popular 7-day itinerary.

Midnight Sun : Although all summer cruises in the region will experience long summer days, specific midnight sun itineraries set sail for the far north of Norway to let guests experience the thrill of being outside with the sun in the sky at midnight. Many of these trips visit Honningsvåg, which allows guests to travel by bus to the North Cape.

Northern Lights : In recent years, Scandinavia—or more specifically Norway—has become a year-round cruising destination thanks to the growth in popularity of northern lights cruises .

Aurora borealis in the sky seen from a cruise ship in Arctic Norway.

These itineraries can be found heading north of the Arctic Circle between October and early April.

Planning Tips For Scandinavian Cruises

Cruising in Northern Europe offers a fantastic variety of excursions and experiences, from historical city tours to adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures.

The region’s love of the outdoors lifestyle means active experiences are easy to find, both through cruise line excursions and independent operators.

The high levels of English comprehension across the region means booking your own activities and exploring ports independently is much easier than in many other parts of the world. Even so, look for independent tours that take place earlier in the day to reduce any time-related risk.

No matter when you visit Scandinavia, pack for all weathers. The height of summer can be marred by heavy rainfall, while it’s possible to get sunburnt in the snow-covered conditions of February and March.

Pack a versatile wardrobe. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions.

Cruising And Sustainability

Prospective travelers should be aware of environmental concerns associated with cruising in this pristine region. The industry is moving towards sustainability, with initiatives to introduce zero-emission vessels in sensitive areas, particularly the UNESCO-listed Norwegian fjords .

Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore.

It’s full steam ahead for the cruise ship industry after Royal Caribbean hiked its full-year profit guidance on Thursday, saying it expects 60% growth from last year following record bookings during the first quarter.

Travelers are paying “record ticket prices,” according to Royal Caribbean — despite a recent spate of high-sea deaths and missing passengers reports, including a Florida 20-year-old who jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise this month.

Soaring demand for vacations at sea has given cruise operators ample room to raise ticket prices as the industry looks to close the pricing gap between more expensive land-based holidays and give their profits a lift.

Royal Caribbean, which operates the Celebrity Cruises, now expects annual profits of between $10.70 and $10.90 per share, compared with its earlier forecast of $9.90 to $10.10.

“Our existing fleet along with our new ships continue to perform exceptionally well, highlighted by the market response to the launch of Icon of the Seas,” CEO Jason Liberty said.

Royal Caribbean’s shares — which have spiked 126% in the past year, were up 2% on Thursday morning, to $139.32.

“I remember owning the stock in 2022 and every client was giving me grief about it,” said Peter Ahluwalia, manager at Belinvest Global Equity Fund that holds Royal Caribbean stocks and chief investment officer at Swiss Partners Group. “We’re turning almost 45% return on equity at the moment, which is quite incredible.”

Overall, the industry which was among the hardest hit during the pandemic, is expected to grow to 39.4 million passengers in 2027 from 31.7 million last year, according to Statista.

The surge in demand comes amid major publicity blows from incidents at sea involving passengers who have gone missing, including the Florida man who jumped overboard on April 4 in front of his brother and father after a night of drinking.

Last December, a 41-year-old Royal Caribbean passenger went overboard on a cruise to the Bahamas. That followed an incident last August involving a 64 year-old woman sailing from Singapore to Malaysia on Royal Caribbean who is presumed to have jumped to her death .

On average, 19 people go overboard on cruise ships every year — and of those, only about four are rescued, according to a 2020 study commissioned by the industry trade group Cruise Lines International Association.

Travel alert: Royal Caribbean cancels cruises to this island

Royal Caribbean Cruises has canceled more stops at a popular private resort in Haiti due to safety issues.

Guests who booked on cruises in the summer and early fall are receiving notifications from Royal Caribbean that their cruises to Labadee, a private resort on the northern coast of Haiti, have been canceled, according to royalcaribbeanblog.com , a website that reports on the cruise line.

After Royal Caribbean started to cancel trips to Haiti in March due to civil unrest in Haiti, the cruise line started to cancel more cruises into September, royalcaribbeanblog.com reported. The Royal Caribbean had previously canceled visits to Labadee through the end of this May.

The private resort stop has since been replaced with another port or a day at sea, the royalcaribbeanblog.com reported. The cancellations affect ships such as Adventure of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas.

The Royal Caribbean announced in March that it was suspending all calls to Labadee, according to cruiseindustrynews.com . The move came after the U.S. State Department announced a travel alert for people to not visit the country.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. State Department wrote in a press release in March. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them.”

I went on 2 of Royal Caribbean's largest and newest cruise ships. I enjoyed them, but they're not for everyone.

  • I've sailed on Royal Caribbean's largest cruise ships , Wonder of the Seas and Icon of the Seas.
  • Both megaships are jam-packed with people, amenities, and dining options.
  • But if you want a quiet cruise to unique destinations, they might not be for you.

Insider Today

Before booking a vacation at sea, travelers should always research the best cruise line and ship for their needs.

If you're looking for a cheap and fast trip, try Margaritaville at Sea . Craving something more upscale? Consider Oceania Cruises.

But if you're looking for high-end sailing to unique destinations, I'd suggest avoiding Royal Caribbean's megaships .

Royal Caribbean has become synonymous with giant, family-friendly cruise ships

By 2028, Royal Caribbean wants one-third of its fleet to be megaships.

The latest addition, the 1,196-foot-long and 248,663-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, entered service in January, unseating Wonder of the Seas as the world's largest cruise liner.

Together, the two vessels can fit over 19,000 people — about 4,500 crew and 14,500 guests. Each ship has eight neighborhoods and there are 29 bars and 48 eateries between them.

I've attended complimentary sailings on both Wonder and Icon, the longest of which was three nights on the latter. From their colorful pool decks to the inescapable crowds, as a solo-adult traveler, I was equal parts entertained, overwhelmed, and overstimulated.

Related stories

But admittedly, I had fun. I do love a good waterslide; Wonder has three of them and Icon has six.

If you want to go on a cruise with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini golf — Royal Caribbean's megaships could be your best option.

Wonder and Icon are jam-packed with activity spaces like ice-skating rinks and ziplines.

But don't expect a peaceful retreat. The rowdy, bar-hopping adults and screaming children at the water playground aren't conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Megavessels might not be for you if you want a quiet cruise

If you want a relaxing vacation — maybe one that doesn't involve crowds of children — you shouldn't stay on either Royal Caribbean yacht.

There are many ways to have a luxury vacation on Icon of the Seas . But unless you want to pay for upcharged amenities at every turn, you'd be better off spending more upfront to reserve a premium cruise line — especially if you're interested in cruising for the destinations, not the ships.

After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, Icon and Wonder exclusively sail in the Caribbean.

Some destinations, such as French Polynesia, have set restrictions on which cruises can travel there amid concerns about pollution and overcrowding.

If stopping at these ports — or, really, anywhere outside the Caribbean — is at the top of your vacation wish list, you'll have to travel on a smaller Royal Caribbean ship or go with a different cruise line like Oceania , Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas.

You might not get a waterpark, but you'll get a quieter vacation to locations no megaship will likely be allowed to visit.
