We had PJ as our tour guide. He showed us how to shop like a local as well as giving us some interesting information about the foods we were eating. We got to try several delicious cheeses and meats, taste some good wine and enjoyed several desserts! Montmartre is a great area for the tour and PJ showed us a few of the sites and had stories to go with them!

What can I say about PJ that you guys dont know he was amazing so funny he was Montmarte he even saved us from pickpockets

I would not consider this a "food tour." This was more or a food "tasting." A "tour" implies we would have walked around trying different food at different places, but that's not what this was. This was walkint around, buying food and then going back to someone's basement to sample all of the food. Very weird setup.

Our guide Clément was fantastic, his passion for fresh local produce was evident from the fist stop. He was a wealth of information, entertainment and a great host. We enjoyed every bite and would highly recommend this tour!

This tour was very casual and fun. Tour guide (can't remember her name but was a young lady) was very gracious and fun. The food (except one "mystery dish" she wanted us to try) was awesome! Really got a flavor for the food of the area and the beautiful Montmartre area, which was very charming. The only issue on the tour was when we sat down at their secret basement dining area it was extremely hot and uncomfortable. Suggest the tour company invest in some better climate control in that space. Other than that we had a wonderful time on this tour.

PJ was very informative and made us laugh the whole time. Tour ran almost 5 hours. Great food and wine provided. Best food tour ever done. Give it a go as you will not regret it.

Our guide, Daphne, was amazing. She showed us a great inside view of historic Montmartre. After taking part in some sampling and gathering our food for the tasting, we got to experience her awesome storytelling abilities while we enjoyed our French cuisine. Highly recommend this tour!

I purposely choose the six pm tour as it was dinner time. We walked around Montmartre and stopped at many food establishments, we got to taste cheese, meats, crepes , macaroons. All very good but no Secrets! Could have done this on our own and for 200 euros bought samples plus! At end of tour went into basement and was served the samplings from the places we visited. We did have wine. Felt unsafe in basement as only egress was up a spiral staircase. Not suitable if unstable on feet.

We had a full day in Paris with no plans. We found this tour and it looked like the perfect afternoon. It was exactly that...perfect!! It was the right combination of walking, tasting, and learning about the area and it’s food! Marie, our guide, was delightful!! So knowledgeable, funny, and a joy to be with. We especially loved that we went to places where the locals went - not the touristy parts of Montmartre! HIGHLY recommend this tour! Thank you for such a wonderful afternoon, Marie!

We were taken to a chocolate shop, bakery for pastries and bread, a cheese store while walking through the charming neighborhood of Montmarte. Alice, our tour guide was delightful, informative and entertaining. She is a great ambassador for France! After our shared meal in the wine cellar, she gave us a list of restaurant recommendations and emailed us pics and information on all we ate!

Our tour guide was delightful. The food stops were memorable and delicious. Her explanations were thorough and interesting. We ended with a gathering with wine and samples from our walk that day. Terrific experience!

We throughly enjoyed this tour of the Montmartre area as our apartment was in the Pigalle area. Samuel, our guide, as extremely delightful, very knowledgable of the cheese, pastries, bakery, wines and meat products and did an excellent job of shepherding our group through streets of Montmartre. Our meal was enjoyable and just a perfect way to start or stay in Paris.

PJ was great and so was the food and the experience! We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting to visit the region and learn about how to identify and purchase quality food at a French market, what wine, cheese and meat pairings work best and then indulging in the most delicious deserts. PJ knows his stuff and is great at including the history of the area and the food and some of the secrets as to why French food is always made with such quality and attention to detail. Go check it out! My teenage boys and I loved it!

We had a wonderful experience on this tour. Our guide, Emma, was kind and very informative. We talked around the streets of Montmartre and learned about the food and culture of the area. The food was very tasty and definitely left us full at the end of the day!

Our tour guide Ingrid is phenomenal! She took the time to explain everything and answer all our questions. You really get a great feel for Parisian life from a local. Lots of walking, but you wont be disappointed in the experience... or the food.

PJ was great. Extremely knowledgeable. My only criticism is that the tour ran longer than scheduled and we were stuck in a small room for over two hours. It was warm and this portion of the tour should have been shorter. But if you are interested in food keep your fingers crossed that you get PJ.

Our guide Capuchine was great. Food was great all around. Had a great time. Just a great way to see this very eclectic neighborhood

Terrific tour with Christophe. Montmarte was a great place for a walking tour and our guide was very knowledgeable. The second half of the tour was sit down and included a cheese, cured meat and wine tasting, complete with crepes and éclairs. The tour/tasting lasted 4 not 3 hours which was great - but you should know that if you have other tours or dinner reservations the same day. It was so much food - we could not even think about dinner after the tour. Highly recommend - but come hungry!

So much food to taste! Amazing experience if you like to try different foods!

Eleanore was great. I would definitely do this tour!! Well worth the money.

Hugo was the absolute best guide for our Paris Montmartre food tour! He was passionate about the food, wine, and Parisian living. Hugo educated us on Parisian history and taught us what to look for in the shop windows for the best retailers. When we picked up all the ingredients for our tasting, he taught us how to break off a piece of a baguette without flattening the bread. He shared how the best pairing of wine and cheese should be from the same region. We learned so much and enjoyed his tour immensely. I look forward to another future food tour with Hugo!

We did this tour on our first night in Paris. On our walking tour our guide pointed out a lot of really good places to eat that we then went back to during our stay all the places were just as good as she promised they would be. We learned A LOT of French history and got to try many things. I would recommend this tour if you love food, especially trying different things.

We had one night in Paris on our way home from Italy. This tour was such a treat. We met a small group of people and our guide, who was so nice and knowledgeable. I would recommend this tour on your first day in Paris, as the information we learned can help you when shopping for food in the city. We walked to a cheese shop, a butcher, a baker for baguette which was named best baguette in Paris in 2016, buying items at each place while we also had tastings. We also stopped in the most amazing small macaron shop, where we got to try two macarons and two pieces of chocolate - both heavenly. Once we made a few stops, when went to a little place with our items and sat around a table where we learned how to share baguette, got to know our fellow travelers and tasted our bounty. They started us off with sparkling wine, and moved on to red wine with the other items of cheese, cured meats, pates and dessert. Our guide gave us the opportunity to try some items we might not normally try - for some, its checking a box, but you wont know until you try. Aside from those items, we enjoyed great cheeses, meats, wine and bread. It was a lot of fun and became our dinner that evening. What a blast. Cannot recommend enough. We did the 6PM tour.

Welcome to Montmartre!

Bonjour, foodies! Your culinary adventure begins at 10:30 am in Montmartre, where you’ll meet your knowledgeable guide and fellow group members. This vibrant neighborhood is known for its cobblestone streets, sweeping vistas, and impressive art scene, and has long been a haven for artists and foodies alike. Throughout the tour today, you’ll be introduced to some of its finest bakeries and eateries, and with a local guide leading the way, you’ll also happen upon hidden wine bars and artistic clues about its storied past.

Wake up your tastebuds

First things first—a baguette. Not just any baguette, though, an award-winning baguette! While made of only four ingredients (flour, water, yeast, and salt), the Parisians have mastered this simple recipe to create a perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside masterpiece. While you enjoy, learn how the baguette has long been a staple of Parisian culture and how France even has a law that specifies the ingredients and methods that can be used to make "traditional French bread".

Next, it’s time to shift your attention to the sweeter things in life during a visit to the “Picasso of Pastry.” Named after Pierre Hermé, a visionary in the world of patisserie, you’ll soon be biting into an absolutely divine macaron. What sets these apart, beyond their incredible mix of crisp, fluffy, and creamy textures, is the exotic flavors on offer.

Explore Montmartre

Between stops for bites, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore the hidden nooks and highlights of Montmartre alongside your expert guide. Delight in witty stories and fascinating fun facts as you stroll along charming streets, but don't forget to have your camera at the ready. From the iconic Moulin Rouge to the famous "I Love You" wall, there's no shortage of photo-worthy stops and unforgettable moments to capture. Montmartre is a neighborhood that has managed to retain its soul amidst the bustling city of Paris, and you’ll undoubtedly feel that with every step.

Cheese and Wine

No French culinary tour would be complete without cheese and wine, and soon, you’ll find yourself in one of Montmartre’s modern wine bars. As you sip local varietals and taste your way through a charcuterie, your guide will provide insights into how these trendy spots are redefining the Parisian wine scene with their focus on organic and biodynamic selections.

After three hours of exploring, dining, and sipping, it’s time to bid farewell to your guide and fellow foodies. With a happy stomach and a deeper appreciation for the art of French cuisine, you’ll be perfectly poised to continue your Parisian adventure independently. Thanks for joining!

Secret Food Tours – Paris Montmartre

secret food tour paris montmartre

Sharing is caring!

I can’t tell you how excited I was to finally be able to take another food tour, and in Paris no less. Now I thought I’d be trying the weirdest foods, and the term “weird” is super relative. But the way my palette is set up, the foods I eat and actually enjoy are minimal. One thing I did think I’d be testing out and didn’t was escargot. But I promise I’ll go out of my way to try it next time. This particular tour was run by Secret Food Tours Paris Montmartre. It was perfect for me because I was staying in Montmartre and was able to walk to the meeting point, albeit I went the entirely wrong direction the first time.

First let me say that I will not be sharing the locations of any of the eating places. If you want the best foods in the Montmartre (and possibly Paris) area, you should definitely sign up for one of their tours here . Also keep in mind that I first took one of their food tours in Madrid and it was amazing as well.

Why I Opted for a Food Tour

secret food tour paris montmartre

Food tours are a great way to not only eat like the locals, but you get to find out WHERE the locals eat. I mean, why go all the way to Paris and not have cuisine that’s deemed Parisian? I live for a good food tour because it becomes a walking and history tour all in one. You find out about certain landmarks and history while chowing down on some good eats. You basically pig out and walk it all off. Goodbye food-baby!

I also love them because it’s a great way to not only find out where you should eat, but you get better and better at choosing good restaurants. PRO TIP: If they have an english menu, keep walking. Now I’m not saying everyone with a menu in another language is horrid, but it tends to be a sign that they may not be as authentic as you believe. On this tour, Claire, our guide, also taught us the signage to look out for when it comes to shops and why the local, small establishment will always be the best.

What Went Down

secret food tour paris montmartre

I hopped out of bed and ran to meet Claire and the rest of the group to begin our food tour. I repeat, I hopped out of bed. So I was surprised to find out that we’d start with sweets. First a chocolate shop and then macarons. Spoiler alert: IT’S NOT LADURÉE. I don’t know that any chocolate on earth can quite compare to Swiss chocolate, but it was hands down some of the best I’ve ever had in life. TIP: if you’re unsure about a chocolate shop, go in and test their base chocolates (white, milk, dark). If it’s delicious, then you’re probably safe to go back in and go wild on the candy.

I’m pretty simple when it comes to my sweets so I opted for the milk and dark chocolate bases. They were heavenly. When it came to the macarons, I can honestly say they were the best I’ve had, but I still am not a macaron fan. Claire recommended we try the outlandish flavors because really, how often would we have hand crafted macarons on the house, but I opted for one of my pair to be a simple lemon flavor.

Now moving on to the why I was here: bread, cheese, charcuterie. Could a girl really ask for more?

secret food tour paris montmartre

We started out grabbing more than a few fresh baguettes. I mean, just made and still piping hot where you could see the steam, baguettes. We broke bread, literally, and then continued on to a cheese shop. There I stood on a tiny sidewalk in Montmartre, probably in someones way, and had the absolute best cheese of my life. No exaggeration. And our last stop was to pick up a variety of pâtés and sausages, but not before trying out a yummy garlic sausage first.

Now that we were done grocery shopping, we headed to a location to sample everything. It truly seemed like the baguettes, meats and cheeses were on an endless conveyor belt. And how could I forget the wine? Funnily enough, Claire doesn’t care for Bordeaux wines but when I say I had the most DELICIOUS Bordeaux red, EVER… I’m actually sitting in an airport lounge right this minute, sipping a bordeaux because I’m cool, and fancy, and Bordeaux my new thing.

Should you take this tour?

secret food tour paris montmartre

I highly recommend this tour and recommend you seeking out Secret Food Tours  in a city near you. The guides are always knowledgeable about the area and cuisine, and are the best resources when it comes to food! I always get great restaurant recommendations, find out if the places I’m going to/have been are worth it, and to be honest, I’m genuinely interested in why regions eat what they do. I mean, the story about the Portuguese and cod fish just may be the most random you’ll ever hear.

You should definitely take a food tour by your second day in a new location. This guarantees the yummiest of meals throughout your journey. Bon appétit!

Europe is always a good idea., exploring the heart of montmartre with secret paris food tours.

secret food tour paris montmartre

Earlier this year with my mother, Dan’s mother, sister, and aunt, and our friend Pryor (frequently on this blog) and her mother went to Paris over Valentine’s Day.  On this lovely Girls’ Trip, we took a food tour through Montmartre on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon – I’m talking sunny and 60 degrees! It was pretty great and a fun walk to explore a usually too touristy part of Paris!

IMG_0596

Montmartre. You can still see a windmill in the background!

For those unfamiliar with Montmartre, Montmartre is well-known as an old artist and student neighborhood on a hill in the North of Paris. Its also home to the famous Moulin Rouge, a few historic windmills ( i.e. “les moulins”), and the only vineyard remaining in Paris. In the recent past, Montmartre has also held a seedy reputation to be avoided by tourists at night, being known as Paris’ “Red Light District.” This was the case when I studied aboard in Paris in college. In any case, Montmartre has certainly reinvented itself in the last decade, and Montmartre is now a bustling neighborhood with lots of people (local and tourists), shops, and cafes. Very different from what I remembered!

IMG_0569

Montmartre looking spiffy and safe.

Our tour started around 11 AM at the Abbesses Metro station, which, as I mentioned, was not the nicest area at all when I studied in Paris. I was completely shocked to see how the area has turned around. Our trusty food tour guide, PJ, arrived right on time and our tour started with a laugh – PJ is very funny and immediately engaged everyone in the tour! PJ, a longtime resident of Montmartre, gave us a quick history lesson about Montmartre to start the tour!

IMG_0511

PJ starting the tour at the easy-to-find Abbesses Metro Station.

The food portion of the tour kicked off with a stop at the most amazing boulangerie that I never would have stopped in on my own – Boulangerie Coquelicot. And, I’m not sure why I wouldn’t have stopped in, because it was crazy packed with locals. PJ gave us some history on the business and we got a quick peak at the bread making, which was in full force this Sunday morning! PJ purchased some bread to go, while all of us took a sample of a small bread treat! Mine contained raisins, other had chocolate or apricots.

We next moved just down the street to the cutest fromagerie, or cheese shop in English, La Butte Fromagere, with so, so many types of French cheese! PJ schooled us (seriously) on the various types of French cheese and we tasted a bit of French cheese! We also learned the secrets of French eggs, and they are seriously way better than the ones that we have in the US… PJ purchased some more cheese for us to eat later.

IMG_2453

So much delicious, delicious French cheese.

Talking cheese!

So much important information here.

First tasting!

IMG_0558

The next stop on the tour was at a boucherie, or butcher shop, Boucherie des Abbesses. We did not eat anything at this particular stop, but PJ educated us on the many types of French meats, how they are purchased (sometimes with the head and feet!), and various cuts that are popular in France. PJ also picked up some meats for later!

IMG_0572

IMG_2470

We moved on and walked up a small hill (I mean, it was Montmartre) to PJ’s own restaurant/shop. Everyone sat around a small table and PJ poured glasses of white wine – a Loire Valley Sauvignon from Domaine Charbonnier – to start our proper food and wine tasting. If you had not gathered, unlike some other food tours, this tour took us shopping for bread, meat, and cheese, and then we tried everything at a little picnic in PJ’s shop. This was not totally different from the other Paris food tour that I took in 2016 (in the Marais) with Paris By Mouth .

IMG_0599

Walking up to our indoor picnic.

IMG_2476

PJ’s shop – Le Petit Moulin! Translation: The Little Windmill!

IMG_2478

PJ is very passionate about the wine!

We first tried a truffle cheese served with 3 types of French bread, everything picked up earlier in the day! The truffle cheese was 100%. No question. We also tried a hard French cheese (I cannot recall the name). Both were very good, but not nearly as good as the truffle cheese!

IMG_0605

White wine, 3 French breads, and Truffle cheese!

IMG_0606

Hard cheese.

We next moved on to our finds at Boucherie des Abbesses and a glass of light red wine – a 2016 Pinot Noir from Maison Roche de Bellene in Bourgogne (Burgundy). First up, a salami type of meat and a summer sausage style meat. Both were very good; I preferred the summer sausage meat, but I was probably the only one! And I will also note, that if you are thinking this is a lot of food – it is! Anything that you could not finish or did not want to try, PJ was very cool about it and not judgmental at all.

IMG_0607

Summer sausage style.

IMG_0619

The three wines we tried during this portion of the tour. The Pinot Noir is the light bodied red wine discussed.

Our tasting took a bit of a wild turn at this point – an andouille sausage that contained brain and headcheese. I’ve had both before, so it was not that strange for me, but it was kind of a shock for most of the tour. As mentioned, PJ was really nice and did not pressure anyone into trying it, but I think most people took at least a bite. Actually, the youngest member of our tour (I think 13?) ate the entire piece of head cheese in one bit! Needless to say, the first two meats were the fan favorites! PJ poured everyone another large glass of red wine around this time to ease the pain! This wine was a big red from Bordeaux – a 2014 Chateau du Payre!

IMG_0610

IMG_0609

Andouille sausage with brain…I forgot a picture of the headcheese.

We were next served some of my favorite Parisian treats – duck rillettes and pork pate! Both are spreadable meat dishes (I love spreadable meat!) that paired very well with the fresh French bread. I think most of the tour liked these dishes; they are not too crazy if you can get over their different “look.” We also ended the meal with an aged Comte cheese! After this dish, everyone got read to move on to the dessert portion of the trip, but not before making a trip to see PJ’s mother-in-law a/k/a the wild boar head on his wall.

IMG_0611

Duck rillettes.

IMG_0612

Michelle with the wild boar head!

The first dessert stop (yes, FIRST dessert stop), was a short walk away at a really cute store called Les Coupettes for choquettes, a quintessential Parisian dessert. Choquettes are small pastries with sugar crystals on the top that are, at times, stuffed with whipped cream. This is also the name of Karl Lagerfield’s (RIP) famous cat. The chouquettes were excellent and had just come out of the oven. And, we saw Owen Wilson and his mom here, which kind of overshadowed the couquettes… HOW EXCITING!!

Les Choupettes.

Close up of the chouquettes.

IMG_2518

Michelle & Owen Wilson.

Our next stop was less exciting but just as delicious, macarons and chocolates at Chocolat Illèné. Everyone go to pick two macarons and two chocolates to take away (since we were so full!). Chocolat Illèné offers some really interesting flavors and the display is very pretty. I went with Cassis and Rose Raspberry macarons and milk and caramel sea salt chocolates!

IMG_0635

Pretty macarons.

While everyone was totally full, we still had one stop left – crepes and champagne!! Our final stop was at La Crêperie. Each person got their choice of sweet crepe, and there were a lot of options! I went with the classic Nutella, and it was nothing short of amazing! We enjoyed our crepes with a glass of Burt Champagne from Vignoble Brisebarre. Our tour ended in a busy square a few minutes walk from where we started. Since it was a Sunday afternoon, everyone was out and about enjoying the weekend!

Pryor with her crepe and champs!

The entire tour was fantastic, but what really made this tour was our guide, PJ! PJ was fantastic and took an interest in each of the tour participants. He is also from the area, knew so many people that we passed no the street, and is incredibly knowledgable about French food and food culture. I would not hesitate to take this tour again and recommend it to any foodies traveling to Paris.

IMG_0531.jpeg

PJ accompanying Aunt Di through Montmartre with a sack of bread.

If you do this tour, I would note that our tour last much longer than the 3 hours expected (about 5 hours total) and it ended very close to where we started (maybe 3 blocks away). Looking back, I would probably allot an hour or two to explore Montmartre after the tour. I leave you with a couple pictures of Montmartre from our afternoon!

STEAL OUR TRIP

Secret Food Tours Paris : Offering multiple food tours of Paris, we did the Montmartre tour at 89 euros/person, which included all food and drink mentioned in this blog post. Book online in advance, as tour participants are capped and these tours sell out. Note that there is also a drink addition, that permits guests a few extra adult beverages. We did not to this option. Wear walking shoes, bring a bottle of water, and do not eat much before the tour! There’s often a 10% coupon on the website.

I typically link all of the places that we stop on food tours that I take. However, many of these stops did not have helpful websites, or any at all. And, I think this tour would be next to impossible to recreate on your own. If you are a foodie and interested in Montmartre, do yourself a favor and take this tour.

Le Petit Moulin : 18 Rue Tholozé, 75018 Paris. PJ’s wine and cheese bar. Since this place is tiny, reservations are necessary and can be made online. Sample menu online.

Secret Food Tours Paris: Montmartre

  • October 25, 2016

I’ve shared my secret (not-so-secret now) life goal of adopting 3 European cities . It felt silly at first, but once I wrote it all down, it felt so true. And Paris, of course, is on that list! To really dive into the city and the culture, I just knew I had to take a food tour in Paris.

Big thanks to Secret Food Tours Paris for hosting me with this complimentary tour! All views and opinions are my own.

Paris Food Tour Sacre Coeur

I don’t just want to adopt the city. I want to walk, talk, eat, and shop like a Parisian . Totally wish I had the fashion sense that would make me fit right in too. Who wouldn’t?!

To start the adoption process, I reached out to Secret Food Tours Paris and scheduled a tour in the Montmartre neighborhood–the area right by Sacre Coeur. The best thing about food tours is that you never know exactly what you’ll get. But what I did know I was going to get a lesson in how to be Parisian!

Paris Food Tour Montmartre

Visitor Tip: Ideally, you should take a food tour when you arrive to a new city.

A Different Kind of Food Tour

This Montmartre food tour from Secret Food Tours was much different than the tours I’ve taken in Berlin , Barcelona , and London . They were all different companies, but that’s not what I mean. Typically, I’ve been taken to various restaurants to have a bite and learn a little bit about the restaurant and the area, then you walk a few minutes until you get to the next one.

I like this “normal” way. The food is well spaced out and we get time to chat amongst ourselves which is always fun since we’re all travelers!

Paris Food Tour Montmartre | Parisian street

On this Paris food tour, it was more about how to shop for yourself when you venture out on your own. While I was first quite confused as to what was going on, it soon became obvious…

Our guide, P.J., was really showing us how to shop like a Parisian!

One of the last things we did was to sit in a cafe to relax and inspect all the delicious bites (and drinks) we collected along the way. And then devour them.

Learning to Shop

On the tour itself, we visited a popular cheese shop so P.J. could explain how you can pick out a great cheese for yourself and why the French can’t get enough of certain kinds of cheese. Learning about cheese in this way was really helpful! Our guide made it feel like a class (in the best kind of way) because he gave information that would actually help you. All while we’re drooling over the different varieties and smells. Ohhhh the cheese smells! My stomach started growling at this stop.

Paris Food Tour Montmartre | Cheese shop

The history was fascinating, too! Did you know that the metro lines 2 & 6 lie directly behind where the old city wall was for Paris? Or that Paris all started on the island that Notre Dame sits on? Yeah…neither did I! These random facts are so interesting and the perfect tidbits to show off with at parties 😉

We hit up a Boulangerie (bakery) for some beautiful and fragrant baguettes. The French take baking bread so seriously that if you call yourself a Boulangerie and you don’t bake the bread on site, you can lose your business! We confirmed it was the real deal when we saw the many ovens churning out various types of bread. There’s really nothing like the smell of freshly baked bread…one of life’s great pleasures. Am I right?!

Paris Food Tour Montmartre | Bakery

Would it be a food tour in France if we did not go to a wine shop? Nah, not to me at least! Wine is really a funny thing. Regions matter, and specific farms and terra matters. That’s why some wines are so expensive. We were given a lot of great information on how to choose a good wine, but I’m probably going to still ask the people that run the wine shops because I didn’t get THAT good.

Paris Food Tour Montmartre | Wine

Going to a butcher isn’t for everyone, I realize that. But fresh meat is amazing in my world. P.J. picked us up lots of things to try…and some weren’t my cup of tea. But I tried them because I’m trying to push my comfort zone a bit. I’m getting so much better with trying foods since I moved to Europe. Maybe already being outside of my comfort zone helps. I don’t know. But I encourage you to try everything too! If I can do, you can too.

Paris Food Tour Montmartre |Butcher

*pats self on back* I even tried a grasshopper once!  Here’s the video …and yes, I am proud of it.

The Group Comes Together for the Tasting

Paris Food Tour Montmartre | Final Tasting

Just around the time we were all enjoying the tour but tired of the teasing of all the good food we’ve seen, we hopped into a cafe with a bunch of seats waiting for us with wine glasses at the ready. P.J. wasted no time in supplying us with bread and wine while he, um, cut sliced the cheese up for us.

Every time I thought the tasting was over, there was more coming! We tasted so many kinds of cheeses. I was shocked he grabbed so much from the cheese shop. It really felt like we were getting a tasting platter of France. Amazing!

Paris Food Tour Montmartre

The meats went from mild (as in, you may have had it before and nothing “weird”) to me staring at it trying to figure out if I’m actually going to take a bite. That scary piece of meat was head cheese . Click the link to look it up. It’s not something I would normally eat, much less consider trying.

But here’s the evidence that I tried it:

I tried something I have never tried before on a @secretfoodtours in #Paris ! Have you eaten this before and do you like it? #foodtour pic.twitter.com/2NLczJ33sI — Jessica | A Wanderlust For Life (@AWlustForLife) October 26, 2016

I didn’t eat all of it and I still wouldn’t order it for myself, but I’m glad I tried it! I even convinced the woman next to me to try it. She immediately said “no!” when she heard what it was. I’m such a good food influence now apparently 😛 Would you try it?

Once all the bites from the shops had been eaten, there was still MORE! We were given crêpes before we left our seats and then went to a chocolate and macaron shop. But I was so stuffed that I kept those little treats for the train ride back to Amsterdam.

Final Thoughts

The tour seems to have a different agenda than most I take. It teaches you to shop in the small locally owned shops rather than taste food at various restaurants. Which is pretty awesome if you’ll spend time in France where you can use the knowledge. Maybe you can even impress a certain someone? 😉

The food was great, the wine was excellent and the tour guide was super informative. My main critique is that it would have been nice to have more socializing time with the group itself. It was almost so full of information that it was overwhelming! I would often get sucked into what he was saying and not take notes. But I also really love getting to know the others in the group, and there wasn’t too much time for that. It was a PACKED and delicious few hours.

paris_food_tour_me

What do you think of this format? Have 4-5 stops before you get to taste anything…but then you get to chow down for an hour or so? There are pros and cons to everything, for sure!

Ready to explore the city? Here are 25 tips on visiting Paris ! Have a ton of fun!

How to Visit Paris’s Clos Montmartre for a Wine Tasting

By Jennifer Dombrowski

Years ago I was wondering the hilly cobblestone streets of Montmartre when I came upon the little vineyard. Imagine my surprise to find an entire vineyard right in Paris proper, and my shock to find out it even produces wine. Much to my chagrin, a sign posted alongside the gates of the Clos Montmartre boldly stated “closed to the public.”

With a bit of research, I found out it’s not totally impossible to visit… At the time, there were basically two ways to visit the Clos Montmartre: the occasional vineyard tour offered only in French by the Musée de Montmartre or the even more elusive visit offered only during the 4-day long Fête de Vendanges each October.

I never happened to find myself in Paris at just the right time to be able to check off a visit to the Clos Montmartre from my wine travel bucket list. That is, until Walks invited us to try out their Exclusive Montmartre Experience tour that ends in the best way: with a guided visit of the Clos Montmartre and a wine tasting of their limited-production wine.

A long time fan of Walks tours, I didn’t hesitate to pack a bag and jump on the 2-hour Bordeaux to Paris fast train for a few days of Parisian discovery.

The Clos Montmartre from inside the vineyard looking down a row of vines toward the buildings surrounding the vineyard

Clos Montmartre: Paris’s Hidden Vineyard

Montmartre is famous for its artistic heritage, particularly the impressionists like Renoir and Cézanne. But long before famous artists like Picasso and Dali called the hilltop 18th arrondissement of Paris home, Montmartre was a rural hilltop village surrounded by vineyards and farmland. In fact, the tranquil commune was thriving in wine making and gypsum mining until as recently as 1814 when life there was seemingly interrupted by the Russian army making Montmartre a base to bombard Paris during the Napoleonic Wars.

Grape vines have grown all over the hilltop of Montmartre since at least the 4th century when the Roman Emperor Julian had a vineyard on the Montmartre hill. And it might be hard to picture now with Paris being the bustling, urbanized capital that it is, but Paris was once one of France’s major wine producing areas. There was even a royal decree under Louis XV that forbade the import of wine from anywhere further than 70 kilometers from Paris.

But slowly with both urbanization and the devastating phylloxera epidemic, viticulture died out. Only a handful of vineyards remained in what was once one of France’s largest wine producing areas. And the Clos Montmartre , though planted in 1933, is the only vineyard that can lay claim to being located in Paris proper.

Clos Montmartre seen from the Musée de Montmartre

Practically hidden in plain sight, the small vineyard is tucked away behind the Sacré Coeur de Montmartre. Only steps away from the Instagram-famous La Maison Rose , the Clos Montmartre might seem like occupies an odd location in the heart of it all. As we learned during our visit to the Clos Montmartre, it is because local resident artists came together to found the vineyard in 1933 as a means to prevent an impending real estate development project.

A vine in the Clos Montmartre vineyard sprouts young buds in early spring

The vineyard was strategically planted precisely because French law states nothing can be built on a vineyard. The 0.15 hectares was planted with 27 different grape varieties of both red and wine grapes and some 1700 individual grape vines in 1933, which were brought to Clos Montmartre as offerings by various prestigious wine regions around the world from Bordeaux to Japan. As the vineyard was planted just before France passed its strict law regulating vineyard agriculture and wine fabrication, there’s truly a fascinating bunch of grape varieties growing in Clos Montmartre, including ones no longer grown anywhere else in France.

Clos Montmartre's cork tree grows in the upper corner of the vineyard

But the Clos Montmartre isn’t only a sort of museum to long forgotten grape varieties, but also boasts the unique distinction of being the vineyard in France with the most flowers! On our early spring visit, tulips offered a colorful contrast to the newly budded grape vines. Fruits like strawberries and peaches also grow in the vineyard. There’s also olive trees and even a cork tree.

The first harvest came in 1937, with everything harvested by hand – and it is still hand-harvested today. Ever since Clos Montmartre has served as a sort of conservatory of Montmartre’s culture and history.

Two bottles of Clos Montmartre and wine glasses are set up for the tasting inside the arbor in the vineyard

From the very beginning of the first vintage, all proceeds from the sale of the wine have been donated to serve the local community. In 1934, the Comité des Fêtes et d’Actions Sociales was founded. The non-profit watches over the Clos Montmartre and the profits from the sale of the wine specifically go to developing social actions for children and the elderly of Paris’s 18th arrondissement.

Every October the Clos Montmartre celebrates its’ harvest with a big festival called the Fête des Vendanges. For four days, Montmartre honors this tiny patch of land and becomes even more lively with costumed parades, concerts, street performances and giant picnics with an open-air market of the gastronomic specialties from every part of France. During the Fête des Vendanges, quite literally meaning harvest festival, the grapes are picked and brought downstairs to the basement of Montmartre’s town hall where they are pressed, fermented and bottled.

The guide at Clos Montmartre pours glasses of the wine for a tasting in the Paris vineyard

The wine is a type of rosé, more like a clairet. Around 1500 bottles produced each year and the bottles are considered to be collectors items – not because the wine is spectacularly good, but because of the causes behind producing the wine.

Living in Bordeaux , I’ve certainly sipped some of the world’s finest wines from Château d’Yquem to Château Mouton Rothschild’s 1973 vintage with the tribute artist label drawn by Pablo Picasso. While Clos Montmartre might unabashedly state their wine isn’t anything spectacular, there isn’t a better wine at the moment of sipping a glass while surrounded by the vines, flowers and the Mansard-style rooftops of Montmartre. This is a vineyard you come to for the experience, and I promise it won’t be a moment you soon forget from your trip to Paris.

A view of Sacré Coeur and Montmartre from Paris

Beyond the Montmartre Vineyard

Walks Exclusive Montmartre Experience tour doesn’t only visit the Clos Montmartre. In fact, the hour spent at the Clos Montmartre is the perfect ending to the tour through Montmartre.

We actually began the walking tour with a ride on the Montmartre funicular, which quickly whisks you up the hill to the foot of Sacré Cœur. Of course, we admired one of the most spectacular views over Paris before walking through both some of the most bustling parts of Montmartre like Place du Tertre (or Artists’ Square) and continuing on to some of the more off-the-beaten path.

A French woman bicycles down the hill in front of Le Moulin de la Galette in Paris's Montmartre

We wandered by Le Moulin de la Galette, made famous by the 1876 Renoir painting “Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette” that you’ll find in Paris’s Musée d’Orsay. The windmill has been a fixture of Montmartre since the 17th century, and got its’ name from the Debray family, who made a type of brown bread called galette.

We paused to admire the Bust of Dalida, the famous singer who called Montmartre home for 25 years. The French singer had a profound impact on French society, and in 2003 she was placed third behind Madonna and Céline Dion for the award Greatest Singer of the Century.

The swing in the gardens of the Musée de Montmartre with a sign next to it explaining Renoir's famous painting The Swing was painted in the gardens

And our tour lead us to the Musée de Montmartre , housed in a 17th-century building that was the studio of both Renoir and Suzanne Valadon. Overlooking the Clos Montmartre, we spent time here discovering the permanent collection, the gardens that were inspired by the Renoir masterpieces painted here, and even a bit about Le Chat Noir as the famous cabaret was established in Montmartre. And that’s exactly what this museum is all about – the history of how this village built itself up to become the famed artists retreat Montmartre is famed as today.

Like the Musée de Montmartre itself, the Walks Exclusive Montmartre Experience gave us a much more in depth insight into Paris’s 18th arrondissement than I’ve ever gotten on all my previous trips. I was left with a memorable afternoon spent exploring one of Paris’s most interesting arrondissements, and a longing to return to the hilly neighborhood.
