Iceland’s Ring Road – with a total length of 828 miles (1332 km) – is the only national highway that connects major towns in this Nordic island. It’s also a fantastic route for a road trip when you want to see as much of Iceland as you can in a short period of time.

Here’s some useful information about the Ring Road:

• The Ring Road is also called Route 1, Highway 1, or, in Icelandic, Þjóðvegur 1.
• The speed limit on most parts of the road is 55 mph (90 km/h) but you will need to check for signs that say otherwise.
• For the most part, the Ring Road is paved but there are some gravel stretches here and there. These gravel parts are marked with a warning sign posted beforehand.
• The Ring Road is mostly a two-lane road while there are single-lane bridges in some locations.
• It’s not hard to find gas stations along the Ring Road.

Day 1 - The Magnificent Golden Circle

This package is ideal for morning arrivals. After you pick up your rental car at the airport, you’ll head inland, driving through the capital city, Reykjavík.

The Golden Circle Route

Your epic journey will start with the most epic touring route in Iceland: the Golden Circle. This is a day tour that navigates along the most scenic sites that can be found near Reykjavík.

Thingvellir National Park

Your first stop will be at the nation’s heart, also known as Thingvellir National Park. This is a UNESCO site and the world’s oldest parliament was established here in 930 AD. The park now has turned into a serene land where, in still weather, Lake Thingvallavatn becomes a blue mirror doubling the surroundings, creating a surreal world.

The nearby Silfra fissure is a unique point between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. You can sign up for a   snorkeling adventure   in the clear water and literally touch the borders between continents.

Geysir Geothermal Field

Moving on to the renowned Geysir Geothermal Field, you’ll see the unpredictable Geysir and its dynamic neighbor, Strokkur. Strokkur shoots out water up to 65 ft. (20 m) high every 6-10 minutes. Geysir has been less active in recent years but when it erupts, it can reach 229 ft. (70 m) high. The area is filled with bubbling hot springs, steaming mud pods, and smoking fumaroles. It is quite a spectacle to see for yourself.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Next, you’ll see the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. The voluminous Hvita river flows with a huge rumbling sound as it rushes into the misty gorge. The overwhelming energy of the water is awe-inspiring. Downstream, Hvita is completely different from the turbulent waterfall. It becomes a calm blue waterway where you can take a   jetboat ride   to continue sightseeing in the area.

Faxi Waterfall

Before you finish your day, you can stop at Faxi waterfall along the way. It doesn’t have as big of a drop as Gullfoss but the cascade is wide and very pretty, making a great photo opportunity.

For the night, you’ll either stay in the Golden Circle area or the Hvolsvollur area.

Day 2 - The Picturesque South Coast

After a nice breakfast, you’ll resume your journey to the picturesque South Coast. During this section of the Ring Road, you’ll pass through the dramatic landscapes.

Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui Waterfalls

Soon you’ll reach your first stop: Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland since you can walk behind the waterfall to see the whole area from the opposite angle, which is quite amazing. The waterfall is 206 ft. (63 m) high and the water originates from the notorious volcano-glacier, Eyjafjallajokull.

Only a 5-minute walk away from Seljalandsfoss, you’ll find a secret waterfall hidden behind the cliffs. Its name is Gljufrabui. It’s a good idea to put on your waterproof jacket, pants, and boots before entering the small canyon and see this waterfall, though.

Skogafoss Waterfall

The next highlight along the coastline is a 25-minute drive down the road. Skogafoss waterfall is like nothing you have seen so far. It has an enormous cascade that plunges from 196 ft. (60 m) overhead. As one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, Skogafoss is always accompanied by a rainbow on sunny days. Witnessing such a spectacular scene in the middle of beautiful landscapes is an experience not to be missed.

Glacier Hiking Tour 

Next, prepare for a spine-tingling glacier hiking tour. At 1:30 p.m., you’ll meet our expert glacier guide and head out to Solheimajokull Glacier for your adventure. This unforgettable experience will take you out on Solheimajokull Glacier tongue while a friendly glacier guide shares their knowledge of Icelandic glaciers.

Dyrholaey, Reynisfjara, and Vík

Then, you’ll drive to the picturesque seafront town of Vik. On your way, you can stop by Dyrholaey, a promontory rising 393 ft. (120 m) above the sea. The area is a paradise for seabirds, including the cute puffins. There’s a white lighthouse on top.

From there, the amazing scenery of the South Coast will spread out before you in a spectacular panorama. You’ll see the silver glaciers, the different shades of mountains, the charming black sand beaches, and the stunning sea stacks.

Then, you’ll head to Reynisfjara, the famous black sand beach with basalt columns and picturesque sea stacks. Your accommodation will be in either Vik or the Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.

Day 3 - Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell & Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Leaving the southernmost tip of Iceland, you’ll head east along the Ring Road to visit Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, which is the crown jewel of natural attractions in the country. On your way, you’ll see glaciers rising to more than 3280 ft. (1000 m) above sea level. On your right-hand side, you’ll see the lowlands stretching to the sea.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon will be your first stop of the day. This is an insanely picturesque canyon that is 1.24 mi. (2 km) long and 328 ft. (100 m) deep. The whole area looks like it comes straight out of a fairytale. It is not surprising that Justin Bieber used this location in one of his famous music videos (for the song “I’ll Show You”).

Skaftafell and Svartifoss Waterfall

From there, you’ll head to Skaftafell, which is part of Vatnajökull National Park, the largest national park in Europe. Skaftafell is where you can start a journey to hike on a glacier or, in the winter, visit an enchanting crystal ice cave. You can also choose to take a hike to visit Svartifoss, a 65-foot (20-meter) tall waterfall that drops from basalt columns in geometrical patterns. It’s only a 40-minute walk each way to reach the waterfall and its surroundings are completely breathtaking.

The Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and the Diamond Beach

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is about a 46-minute drive from the Skaftafell Visitor Center. The drive takes you through exotic lava fields on both sides of the Ring Road. These alien landscapes were formed by volcanic activity and glacial movements. As you drive past Breidamerkurjokull glacier tongue, you’ll see huge icebergs floating on cerulean water. This is a sign that you are approaching the Jokulsarlon parking lot.

Fed by glacial meltwater from Breidamerkurjokull, Jokulsarlon is now the deepest lake in Iceland. Its deepest point reaches down to 813 ft. (248 m). In summer, there are boat tours that take visitors closer to the icebergs. If you are lucky, you’ll see seals swimming and enjoying their day in the lake.

Next to the lagoon is the black sand beach that we call the Diamond Beach. The name is a vivid depiction of the melting icebergs that are washed up onshore. In their stranded glamor, they continue to amaze people with their charming shades of blue. There are glacier tours to Vatnajokull that depart from the lagoon’s parking lot as well.

Höfn Village

After a complete visit to the lagoon area, you’ll drive to Skaftafell or the Hofn area for your accommodation. A flourishing harbor town, Hofn is a nice stop if you are looking for recreational spots, cozy restaurants, grocery stores, and thermal swimming pools. A lobster festival is hosted every year in Hofn that attracts a lot of visitors for the local gourmet food.

Day 4 - The Untouched Wilderness of Eastfjords

The Eastfjords

The road to the Eastfjords is extraordinarily scenic as you will start to move into the unique fjord scenery that was carved by glaciers many centuries ago. This will be one of the most exciting moments during your Icelandic road trip. You’ll soon reach the spectacular mountain of Vestrahorn. Its jagged appearance stands out against the beach and the mossy bumps in the nearby fields. If you are an avid photographer, this is the moment you have been waiting for to capture the splendor of Iceland’s natural beauty.

Djupivogur Village

Next up is a nice fishing village named Djupivogur. The vibrant town, located between mountains and lagoons, is a perfect bird watching base for nature lovers. A colony of seals is often spotted in the area.

East Iceland isn’t only famous for its fishing towns and fjord scenery. You’ll also find numerous points of interests along your drive. For example, Stodvarfjordur is a town rich in Icelandic culture heritage, even though there are only 200 inhabitants. One popular site is Petra’s Stone and Mineral Collection. You’ll see a range of Icelandic stones in different shapes, colors, and textures while learning a great deal about Iceland’s geography.

Lagarfljót Lake

The Ring Road will lead you to a long lake called Lagarfljot. According to legend, a giant serpent lives in this lake of which sightings have been reported for centuries. Some people have even caught this serpent on video, you can look it up on YouTube!

Borgarfjörður

When you reach the town of Egilsstadir, the capital of East Iceland, you’ll leave the Ring Road behind for a detour to the most beautiful fjord in the Eastfjords area: Borgarfjordur. You’ll drive along empty roads, even in the busiest part of tourist season. This area is so remote that you won’t meet many tourists along your way. After a scenic drive, your final stop of the day will be at Borgarfjörður Eystri, a fjord-side village known as a natural paradise in the east.

The town has a population of only about 100 inhabitants. Located in a long and fertile valley surrounded by incredibly sharp and dramatic mountains, Borgarfjörður Eystri is often referred to as one of the most beautiful locations in Iceland.

Day 5 - Borgarfjörður Eystri

Hafnarhólmi Cape

Start your day by exploring Hafnarhólmi Cape, one of Iceland’s most unique bird-watching sites. A busy, adorable puffin colony lives on a tiny headland by the harbor. You can reach it via a small bridge. The puffins are abundant here and can be observed from very close up. These silly looking birds are not afraid of humans at all!

The Dyrfjöll Mountain Range

Today, you can go hiking in the Dyrfjöll mountains. The natural scenery around Borgarfjordur Eystri is matchless, making it no wonder why this place is a favored holiday destination for Icelanders. The Dyrfjöll mountain range is one of the most impressive mountain ranges in all of Iceland. It’s famously wild and beautiful from all four directions.

The hike to the most illustrious spot in the area takes you to Stórurð (the “giant boulders”). This interesting natural attraction consists of gigantic tuff boulders, charming meadows, and attractive turquoise-colored ponds. The hike starts higher from the road on the mountain pass over the village. There are plenty of other scenic hiking options to choose from. Wherever you go, you are very likely to encounter some reindeer along the way!

After the day, you’ll find your accommodation in the area of Borgarfjörður Eystri.

Day 6 - Dettifoss, Myvatn, and Godafoss in Majestic North Iceland

Driving from East Iceland northwards, you’ll traverse the wilderness that the reindeer call home. If you are lucky, you’ll even spot a herd of reindeer, Arctic foxes, and Icelandic horses along the way.

Dettifoss Waterfall

North Iceland has a lot to offer tourists. The first stop will be the magnificent Dettifoss waterfall. As the most voluminous waterfall in Europe, the width of Dettifoss extends over 328 ft. (100 m) with an overwhelming fall of 147 ft. (45 m). The magnitude of the falling flow creates a great – and constant – amount of spray floating over the canyon. This makes it very scenic; the perfect spot for filming a movie on a mythological subject. The 2012 film Prometheus took advantage of this area for that reason.

After appreciating the sheer volume of water that flows over the cascades at Dettifoss, you’ll head to one of the most popular routes in Iceland, the Diamond Circle Route. This route consists of a group of unique landscapes and diverse attractions.

Hverarond and the Namafjall Area

The first stop will be in the Hverarond and Namafjall area. The area looks out of this world since it’s completely infertile and filled with a sulphuric smell. As the scattered cracks shoot steam out from under the earth, the bubbling mud pots will roll amidst dried clay next to you.

The Myvatn Area

Next, you’ll head to the Myvatn area. Myvatn Nature Baths is a northern alternative to the Blue Lagoon, with the advantage of being less crowded. You can choose to spend a relaxing time in the natural baths at an additional cost or can continue your journey to Myvatn. This huge lake is surrounded by tiny craters. Its name has a very interesting meaning in Icelandic, as it literally means “midge lake”. But laying eyes on this beautiful lake is the opposite of hearing the unpleasant sound of those pesky insects. The area is very picturesque.

The Dimmuborgir Rocks

After a complete visit to Myvatn Lake, you can drop by the Dimmuborgir rocks. This is an area full of weirdly shaped rock formations that subarctic vegetation calls home.

Godafoss Waterfall

The next stop, Godafoss, is a mind-blowing waterfall that has a look as mighty as its name. Its name means the “waterfall of the gods” in Icelandic. This beauty has an almost perfectly symmetrical layout as the cascades pour over the edge of the 39-foot (12-meter) cliff over a width of 98 feet (30 meters). It’s a popular site for landscape photography, so you definitely won’t be disappointed with your results.

Akureyri city

Finally, you’ll drive to Akureyri, the capital of the North. The city has a great vibe for nightlife and several attractions worth exploring. You’ll stay in either Akureyri or the Eyjafjordur area for the night.

Day 7 - Skagafjordur Fjord

Waking up in the Akureyri area, you’ll feel refreshed as the vibrant city gives off a great mix of remoteness and hospitality. Many cultural and musical festivals are hosted here every year, so please check the city’s event calendar before coming! You can also spend some quality time in Akureyri visiting the botanical gardens and colorful streets.

Skagafjordur Fjord

You’ll continue your road trip westwards as you drive along Skagafjordur. The biggest landmark in this area is the 700,000-year-old island of Drangey rising far above the ocean in an isolated pose. The edge of this volcano remnant is considerably deep and the cliffs are a paradise for seabirds.

The Hvitserkur Sea Stack

Next up is a visit to the impressive Hvitserkur sea stack. The natural monument has earned a few nicknames over the years since its shape resembles either a rhino or an elephant. Some even say it looks like a dragon from some angles. This remote sea stack is located off the eastern shore of Vatnsnes.

As you approach Vatnsnes, you’ll have completed many turns and curves on Route 1 in North Iceland during your scenic drive. You’ll stay in the Vatnsnes area for the night in a comfortable room that we have pre-booked for you. The town of Vatnsnes is quite beautiful. Once there, you can take a leisurely stroll to see seals or seabirds, especially in summer when you have longer periods of daylight hours.

Day 8 - The Snaefellsnes Peninsula - Iceland in Miniature

On Day 8, you’ll head to the west to visit the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. This is the charming region of Iceland that we have nicknamed “Miniature Iceland.” The drive from the north to the west is never a boring one since you’ll pass by shallow shores, grassy fields, and rolling mountains. Kolugljufur Canyon will be your first stop of the day. This hidden gem has an awesome waterfall that runs over the hilly area before falling into the bottom of the canyon.

Grabrok Crater

Grabrok crater is the next stop before you steer your vehicle towards the peninsula. The height of the crater’s edge can reach up to 557 ft. (170 m) and the panoramic view from the top is simply fabulous.

Stykkisholmur

Then you’ll get off the Ring Road and drive towards the tip of Snaefellsnes. Stykkisholmur can be your first stop as this town is located on the north side of the peninsula. You’ll definitely find the tiny, colorful town quite charming. You can even try some dried fish there.

Kirkjufell Mountain

The highlight of the day is when you reach Kirkjufell. This is the most popular attraction in Snaefellsnes. Together, the 1519-foot (463-meter) Kirkjufell mountain and the fabulous Kirkjufell waterfall are photographed by many artists as a most classic composition.

The Budir Church and the Londrangar Rock Pinnacles

As you drive further into the peninsula, you’ll be getting closer to the sublime ice-capped Snaefellsjokull glacier. In this protected area, known as Snaefellsnes National Park, you’ll find Iceland’s rare white – or even golden – beach with the black church of Budir sitting on it. Djupalonssandur and Dritvik cove and the Londrangar rock pinnacles are also worth seeing in this national park. The area is truly the best representation of the diverse landscapes of Iceland.

Continuing eastwards, you’ll reach Hellnar and Arnarstapi. Both locations are famous for their picturesque coastal views. You’ll see the white waves crashing into the bottom of the basalt cliffs along the coastline where several species of seabirds choose to nest.

You’ll stay on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula for the night in a comfortable room.

Day 9 - Borgarnes

You’ll get back on the Ring Road on Day 9 as your journey takes you back towards the capital. But, before you reach Reykjavik later in the day, there is a lot for you to see and visit along Route 1.

Gerduberg Cliff

First, you’ll arrive at Gerduberg Cliff, a gigantic wall of huge basalt columns rising 46 ft. (14 m) from the ground. The style is like nothing that you have already seen in Iceland. Its sheer size alone makes this cliff overwhelmingly impressive.

The Silver Circle Route

Next up, you’ll drive along the less busy but equally stunning Silver Circle Route. It resembles the Golden Circle Route as it also has beautiful waterfalls, geothermal fields, and cultural heritage.

Deildartunguhver Hot Spring

The most powerful hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver hot spring, is the first site you’ll stop at. It’s capable of producing 50 gallons (180 liters) of 97°C (200°F) water every second. The nearby towns’ household heating depends on this powerful supply of thermal energy.

Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfalls

Next, you’ll visit two beautiful waterfalls that are very close to each other. Hraunfossar has countless streams that flow out of the lava fields in the middle of the vegetation. This is how the waterfall got its name, which translates as the “lava waterfall”. No matter if it’s summer or winter, Hraunfossar always has something unique to show visitors. A few minute’s walk away, you’ll find Barnafoss waterfall forcefully cascading down into a small canyon. The entire area is fabulous, especially in autumn.

Akranes City

Continue driving towards the capital and you’ll pass Akranes, a scenic town that’s about a one-hour drive from Reykjavik. You’ll find an old lighthouse at the tip of the town, serving as a reminder of the old days when marine life was essential to Icelanders. Then you’ll drive past Hvalfjordur, choosing to go either through the tunnel or via Road 47 for more sightseeing, if time allows.

Finally, in the evening, you’ll reach Reykjavik for a nice dinner, if you want. You will check in to your accommodation that we have booked for you in the Capital Region.

Day 10 - Reykjanes Peninsula

This is the last day of your 10-day road trip via the Icelandic Ring Road as today, you’ll head to Keflavik International Airport for your departure. But before you board your flight, be sure to make the most of your remaining time in Iceland since you are going to drive through the Reykjanes Peninsula where the famous Blue Lagoon is located.

The Reykjanes Peninsula

If your flight schedule allows enough time, you can explore the region that contains the following highlights. The southern part of the peninsula has numerous attractions such as the port town of Grindavik, the magnificent view to be enjoyed from Hopsnes Peninsula, the Bridge Between Continents, and the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon

After visiting the Reykjanes Peninsula, if you are not in a rush to catch your flight, we highly recommend a soak in the milky blue waters at the Blue Lagoon. Since the entry fee is not included in our package, it’s best to book your spot online in advance. You can relax in the warmth of the therapeutic water while you think about the 10-day adventure you have just had.

What is a self-drive tour?

Self-drive tour is a package tour that includes accommodation, car rental and suggested itinerary. The tours are self-guided but we provide you with information to make sure you know where to go and what to see, as well as general practical information about Iceland.

Included with our tours are accommodation and car rental, as described for each tour, itinerary with suggested points of interest along the way, GPS points for each stop (accommodation, activities, points of interest), and a detailed self-drive handbook with lots of practical information.

Which hotels will we be staying in? What category are they?

We use a very varied mix of local accommodations.

Comfort rooms   are private rooms with private bathroom in guesthouses, hotels, motels, lodges, etc. Approximately 3-star rating.

Budget rooms   are private rooms with shared bathroom at guesthouses, hostels, hotels, etc. Approximately 2-star rating.

Which type of vehicle do you recommend?

4WD vehicles are recommended during winter months (October – April) but it doesn’t need to be a jeep, it is safest to drive a vehicle that you are comfortable with so if you’re not used to driving large cars then a smaller, but 4WD, might be a better option. In summer any vehicle is good, depending on how many are traveling together, how much luggage you carry along and how much you’re willing to pay.

How much time will we spend in the car every day?

This depends on the itinerary, some are faster paced while others are more relaxed. Days can range from 200-400 km, though very few days exceed 350 km. Of course you are your own driver and guide while on a self drive tour so you are free to make detours as you wish.

What kind of insurance do I need?

It is always a good idea to make sure you have good travel insurance, as you never know what might happen while in a foreign country. Sure it costs a bit extra, but it can take a load off the mind and end up being totally worth it in case something should happen.

Take a look at what type of insurance is provided with your credit card, alternatively buy special travel insurance from an insurance provider.

As for the car rental, you can opt to buy extra insurance at the time of collecting the car. It may be wise to buy extra insurance such as windshield protection, as a cracked windshield from a stone being thrown off another car is among the most common incidents on Icelandic roads.

Other extra car insurances would be for example sand and ash protection, or additional insurance to lower the self-risk in case of an incident.

Can the itinerary be changed?

Our self drive adventures have been optimized for the best value experience, which includes doing some thrilling activities in the amazing Icelandic nature. As the packages are offered at the best possible price no partial refunds or modifications to the itinerary can be permitted. That includes opting out of an included activity and getting a refund for that activity. You can, of course, choose not to do the activity but as mentioned there would be no partial refunds of the package price.

What do I do when I have a problem while traveling?

You should contact the service provider in question: If there is a problem with the car, contact the car rental. If you have troubles finding the hotel (which shouldn’t happen as you will be provided with the address and GPS coordinates), you should call the hotel.

If you have questions about an activity, contact the activity provider. You will receive all the necessary contact information from us.

Can I add twin bed for my accommodation?

We cannot guarantee twin beds but a large majority of our hotels can accommodate twin bed arrangements and clients can contact the hotels directly after purchase to request a twin bed arrangement.

Day 2 – Waterfalls and Akureyri, the capital of the north

Your next day’s journey continues toward the northern part of Iceland, ending in the north’s capital, Akureyri. As you head toward Borgarfjörður, we recommend stopping by the magnificent Hraunfossar waterfalls, where the water seems to magically flows from the lava bed into the river below. You’ll then continue your journey toward Akureyri, passing through Skagafjörður, known for exceptional horse breeding; in fact, many stunning Icelandic horses can be seen on your drive

Day 3 – Goðafoss waterfall and Lake Mývatn

The whole day is dedicated to the marvels of Lake Mývatn Nature Reserve known as one of Iceland’s most fascinating areas of natural beauty. On the way to Mývatn you must make a stop at the impressive waterfall Goðafoss “The fall of the gods”. One of its main attractions near Mývatn is the Námaskarð geothermal area where you will find bubbling mud pools and hissing steam vents. You must not miss the Krafla area with the crater Víti and the Leirhnjúkur area. Later on you can venture a walk up to the top of Hverfjall crater or dip into the geothermal water of the natural baths located east of the Lake.

Day 4 – Eastfjords

Today is the day to discover the Eastfjords. Start towards the fjord Reyðarfjörður, where a small-but-fascinating World War II history museum is located, and continue along the fjords toward Southeast Iceland. At times, the road hangs precariously high on the mountain slopes. Finally, you drive through the tunnel of Almannaskarð to arrive in the Höfn region, where you will spend that night.

Day 5 – Skaftafell Nature Reserve, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and waterfalls

Your next stop is Iceland’s scenic southeast. After passing various outlet glaciers belonging to Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap, you’ll arrive at the stunningly surreal beauty of Jökulsárlón, a glacier lagoon. This exceptional sight sits at the foot of Iceland’s highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur.

Skaftafell Nature Reserve is another area definitely worth a visit. This oasis, surrounded by glaciers and black sand plains, offers a broad range of options for great hiking. Continue through Kirkjubæjarklaustur village, the Eldhraun lava field and the Mýrdalssandur plain, before you arrive in the Vík area. We recommend you stop at Reynisfjara beach; a black sand beach famous for the Reynisdrangar rock stacks that rise from the sea just off the shore and for its basalt columns.

You can also stop at Dyrhólaey cape, which is the southernmost point of Iceland. Continue westbound; the village of Skógar is the next place of interest with its beautiful waterfall and the local folk museum. As you continue towards Hella you can stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can actually walk behind the waterfall. You then follow the main road to arrive in Hella.

Day 6 – Golden Circle

Continue westbound to the south coast of Iceland and explore the Golden Circle, which takes you to the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland: Gullfoss, Geysir, and Þingvellir National Park.

Your day will end in Reykjavík where you will spend your last night in Iceland.

Day 7 – Departure

It seems as if your journey to fabulous Iceland only began a moment ago, but now it is time to head back home, driving back to Keflavík Airport for your flight. Depending on your flight’s time, you may be able to squeeze in a last day in Reykjavík or an extra night in there to experience all the amazing things that the city has to offer.

How does an iceland self-drive trip work.

On a self-drive trip with Iceland Tours, you’ll be at the wheel of the rental car of your choice and free to go pretty much where you want, whenever you want.

We provide a detailed itinerary to help you plan your route and where you want to stop along the way. But it’s up to you whether you want to stick to it or go your own way. If you do take detours, make sure that you aren’t too far from your accommodation on any given night.

That said, it’s a good idea to stick to the suggested itinerary if you’ve never visited Iceland before. Created by our Reykjavík-based travel experts, it contains plenty of things for you to and see and do on each leg of your trip. One thing’s for sure: you won’t be short on ideas!

Can I drive in Iceland and what kind of license do I need?

You have to be at least 20 years old to rent a car in Iceland, or 23 years old for larger vehicles like jeeps and vans. You’ll need to have held a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year and present a credit card when you collect your car.

You don’t need an International Driving Permit unless your license is not in Latin script (for example, Arabic or Chinese).

When will I receive my travel documents?

Once you’ve paid your deposit for your trip, we’ll finalize bookings for your accommodation, rental car, and any activities. As soon as we receive confirmation of everything, we’ll email your travel documents to you.

We aim to finalize everything within a few weeks of receiving your booking request, but in busy periods this might take longer. That said, you’ll always receive all of your documents before your departure date.

When and where can I pick up my rental car?

You’ll be able to pick up your rental car at Keflavík International Airport from the arrivals hall. Before your trip, we’ll send you information about where to go in the terminal to collect your keys.

Make sure you have your driver’s license and credit card ready when you collect your vehicle.

If you land late at night, you can use the out-of-hours phone at the pick-up desk to contact someone who will be able to help you.

You also have the option to collect your rental car in Reykjavík, if you’re planning to spend some extra days in the city before your trip starts. If you’d like to do this, please let us know in the ‘Special requests’ box at checkout.

Iceland is a stunning country with lots to see. Planning a road trip can be overwhelming. So a great option is to book an Iceland Self Drive Tour package where all is planned and booked for you: the car, the hotels and the suggestions of places to stop. Below is my guide to choose the best tour option for you.

Planning an Iceland Road Trip – Package or Self-planning?

If you arrived on this article, it means that you are considering purchasing a Self-drive Package. However planning a trip to Iceland is a lot of fun so let’s quickly review the self-planning option.

If you have already made up your mind and don’t want to plan things yourselves, you can skip to the next section .

In both case you have the advantage of the self-drive compared to a group tour. You can stop any time you want and spend as much time as you want at a location you love.

Self-Drive Package

• You get an Itinerary defined by local experts
• You don’t have to spend time reading hotels reviews and comparing everything
• One overall price for easy budgeting
• You have less flexibility in the choice of hotels based on your preferences (you just select the category)
• You pay extra for the services provided by the company organizing the tour
• I don’t recommend booking a Tour package if traveling in October. They often offer the Summer packages and days are too short to complete the drives and visits.

You plan the road trip yourself

• You can decide exactly what you want to see
• Tours are often focusing on the main sites, if it is your second time you should consider planning yourself to go off the beaten path
• If you have specific requirements in terms of hotel, you can do your own research and book exactly what you like
• A lot of hours are required to plan everything and compare hotels
• You might not have access to some of the hotel discounts the tour company has

Before I start entering the details and explaining the criteria to choose your self-drive tour company and your tour, you might just want to have a look at my suggestions for packages.

Choosing the Self-drive Iceland Tour company

Local or international.

There are 3 options in terms of purchasing a self-drive tour in Iceland:

• From a local rental car agency
• From a local travel agency
• From a travel agency in your country

The advantage of using an agency in your own country is that it is easy to communicate with them in case of issues, but they probably are using a local agency anyway so it is adding cost.

My choice goes to a local travel agency with local experts to define itineraries. The team at GuidetoIceland is responsive and passionate.

Flexibility

See how many personal details you want in your itinerary. Some companies offer tours without any changes possible, other allow you to modify a few things or select extra options. Or you can go with travel agents who create everything to your taste… However I think most of the time they still use standard itineraries and charge you more… (just saying)

Winter vs Summer

The company you choose should have different packages for Summer and Winter – if they are offering the same, be concerned! Daylight is so different, you can’t fit the same amount of sightseeing and driving.

Don’t forget to check out the minimum age to drive the car and any other conditions they may have (deposit when renting car etc) so that you make sure you agree with those.

Of course, this is always a good thing to read before selecting a company. All companies will have negative reviews, something can always go wrong and some people have impossible expectations… Check out the percentage of bad reviews and if the companies has taken the time to answer the bad one in a respectful manner.

Cancellation Fee

Don’t forget to check the cancellation terms!

For example, if you are booking on GuidetoIceland , you can cancel within 24 hours. Past that, they will keep a significant fee for their work planning and booking. It makes sense but some people are surprised, so I am being upfront. Therefore I  recommend taking their cancellation insurance. The fee is very reasonable and you will be able to get a refund anytime!

Main Criteria to select a self-drive tour in Iceland

Your first criteria to select your self-drive tour in Iceland is how long you have to explore the country. A few days? One week? 10 days? More?

If you have 1 week or under My recommendation when selecting your tour is not to book a Full ring road tour in only 7 days. This would imply a lot of driving and feeling frustrated not to be able to stop as much as you want. With one week or less focus on one region either South Iceland or West Iceland or North Iceland.

If you have more If you have more than a week, you can consider driving the complete tour of the Ring road. And if you have time, I recommend adding the Snaefellsnes peninsula with its beautiful Kirkjufell mountain.

How long you have for your holiday is important, but the period when you are traveling is as well. In Winter the days are really short and you cannot cover as much road and sites as during Summer. Book an Iceland self drive tour that is designed especially for Winter or Summer. However as I said at the top of the article, I don’t recommend booking a tour package when traveling in October. They tend to offer the Summer tour packages but the days are too short for that.

Take into consideration how much driving you are willing to do each day. For example the famous Glacial lagoon of Jokulsarlon is 4h30 away from Reykjavik! That’s one thing that is missing from the otherwise great information on the GuidetoIceland Seld-drive tour packages , it’s how much driving is required each day. But you can get a rough estimate using Google maps.

Of course, you should also select your tour based on your interests:

• If you want to see glaciers, waterfalls and icebergs, head to the South Coast
• If you want to see more volcanoes, geothermal activities and geological features, head to North Iceland

And the last criteria to consider is your budget. Self drive Iceland Tour Prices depends on:

• Time of the year
• Number of people travelling together in the same vehicle
• Type of car (size and 2WD/4WD choice)
• Accommodation type 
• Optional Activities (you can add activities such as glacier walking, glacier boat tour, snorkeling in a fissure…)

What car to choose for your Road Trip Package

Manual or automatic .

Iceland rental agencies offer have both manual and automatic cars. So it depends on what you are used to driving at home. If you are staying on the main roads, driving is very easy. To my opinion, on gravel and bumpy roads, the automatic was more comfortable but the Manual was way more fun! 

2WD or 4WD?

• If you plan on doing the Central Highlands, the question is easy, you need a 4WD and to know how to cross rivers
• If you plan on sticking to the ring road ring and going through all major sights, then you just need a standard car
• If you have some time and want to discover some areas more in depth, this is when you have to go all ‘pros and cons’. The 4WD is more expensive. But by renting a 4WD your don’t worry engaging in gravel roads. If it looks promising, you can go no problems!

Choose your accommodation level

There is not much about accommodation I can tell you.

With an Iceland self drive package, you have a lot less flexibility. You basically choose the level of comfort you are looking for. Note that some accommodations in Iceland have shared bathrooms so make sure the conditions are clear when booking.

I think accommodations is totally secondary in Iceland. It is so beautiful that you want to spend as much time as possible exploring and admiring the scenery. The hotel is just for sleeping 🙂 . But this is a very personal opinion.

Should you book extra activities now or once there?

There are great activities that can be booked on top of the program basis. For example:

• Glacier hiking in Skaftafell
• Snorkeling in the Silfra fissure in the Thingvellir National Park
• Enjoying a boat trip to get closer to the glacier at the Jokulsalron lagoon
• Visiting a sparkling ice-cave that can’t be accessed alone (winter only)
• Going whale watching from Husavik
• Relaxing at the Blue Lagoon
• Hunting for the northern lights

If you book on Guide to Iceland, once you select your date and number of people, you can select the activities you want and book them right away.

Pros to booking right away

• Some tours have limited spaces (e.g. cave tours) so you would not be able to get in at the last minute
• You have your full budget clear and settled
• You can’t be late. You can’t spend more time at a place you like if you have to be somewhere else at a specific time

Personally, I prefer to book everything in advance so that the trip is well structured and it add a pace to the tour.

Best Iceland Self drive Tour Summer

And here comes my selection of great Self-drive tours in Iceland. I have spend time reviewing the itineraries and reviews. I think they are well balanced in terms of scenery and driving time.

I have selected 3 tours depending on your available time:

7 days – South of Iceland + Golden Circle

As I said earlier, if you have only a week, I don’t recommend going for the full ring road tour because it will be a lot of driving and frustration not to be able to stop. This is a great program to explore the best of the Iceland’s South Coast, the Golden Circle and the Snaefellsnes peninsula. There is already a lot for you to see here.

My Highlights – Kirkjufell mountain ( see my photos ), Jokulsarlon lagoon (and don’t forget to cross to Diamond beach – see my photos ), the Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can walk behind ( see my photos )

10 days – Best of Ring Road + Snaefellsnes Peninsula

This is a great tour to have an overall view of Iceland with the South, the North and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. In the North, if whales are not essential to you, I recommend skipping it to spend more time exploring the Myvatn area. It is home to really fascinating geological features.

My highlights – A bit of everywhere, same as above for the South. Once in Myvatn, I recommend Dimmuborgir, the pseudo-craters, Hverir and Leihrnjukur (have a look at my North Iceland Guide )

14 days  – Complete Iceland overview including the Westfjords

A full tour of Iceland including the magnificent and less visited Westfjords!

Best Iceland Self drive Tour Winter

And I have done the same with the Winter tours, making sure you can complete the program easily (you can drive less in Winter). But make sure you can drive on the snow. Check out my article about driving in Iceland in Winter .

6 days – Golden Circle + South Coast

Golden circle and South Coast of Iceland with less stops than in Summer because things are less accessible. You will still enjoy magnificent scenery, the powerful waterfalls and the icebergs at Jokulsarlon.

I recommend the Ice cave tour. It is becoming a bit too touristy but it is still a magnificent place!

10 days – Complete Ring Road

Enjoy the Complete Ring Road Tour to get an overview of the whole island in Winter.

Hello this was very informative! I want to take my family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids (6, 9, and 12). I have a quote from Iceland Travel for the Ring Road Express Road Trip (Self Guided). We would be there for 9 days in April. We are so excited to go but this whole process seems very overwhelming to me. I don’t want to book with the wrong agency, spend time at the wrong places, etc. ANY INSIGHT would be so appreciative!

Hi Michael First, you won’t spend time in the wrong place – apart from 30min of driving somewhere on the Ring Road in the South, the landscape is MAGNIFICENT EVERYWHERE. There are no wrong places. No kidding. Plus you are doing self guided so you have some flexibility. You don’t have to follow the plan to the letter. If you see something you like, you can stop. Regarding the agency, as long as there are no big amount of bad reviews on the net (you will always have some), it should be fine. Most companies do a good job. I know it is hard to see the good when the media list all that can go bad, but most people have no issues at all. They just don’t write about it when it goes well 🙂 And if the company answer all the reviews on the Internet cordially, it is a good sign that there is a team and some customer satisfaction focus. Don’t worry. Have a positive mindset. And you are going to have a wonderful time! All the best, Claire

Doing 8 days/7 nights in May, with a early arrival and late departure. 7 day itineraries seem to short but the full ring drive seems it may be a time stretch. Any suggestions, half of the group of 4 are not into long hiking distances so driving and stops may work.

11. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ICELAND?

Meanwhile, you can begin winter tours anytime you like between October to April. But bear in mind that Christmas and New Year tour departures are only available to start on a limited number of days before Christmas Eve.

We recommend checking what flights are available before you book your tour. However, it’s best to hold off on confirming your flights until after your dedicated travel consultant has been in touch.

You will normally hear from your dedicated travel consultant 2 working days after making your booking online. By waiting until you have been introduced to your travel consultant, you can then get your flights to match up with your personal itinerary.

15. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY ICELAND ROAD TRIP?

Iceland is famous for its ever-changing weather, so it’s best to be prepared for all conditions.

Make sure to pack warm layers and waterproofs, whether you are travelling in summer or winter. That way, come rain or shine, you can get out and about to enjoy Iceland’s natural beauty.

Do I need a 4x4 rental car in Iceland?

All the rental cars we provide in our luxury self drive tours are 4×4 since this is the safest and most comfortable choice for travelling in Iceland.

How are the Weather Conditions?

The weather in Iceland can change very quickly so it’s important for your to stay up to date on the weather conditions, especially during the winter months. Weather conditions can be checked out on the  Icelandic Meteorological Office website , which is the most accurate weather forecast available. The website’s different maps display temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and even avalanche forecasts. When driving in Iceland a pair of good sunglasses are a must!

How long does it take to drive around Iceland?

The Ring Road or Route 1 goes all the way around Iceland, about 1332 KM and it would take you between 12-14 hours without any stops.. We don’t recommend that! For you to be able to enjoy and experience the stops and places along the way we would recommend taking 6 – 10 days to go all the way around Iceland.

International Driving License?

To drive in Iceland you do not need an international driver’s license unless your domestic license may be hard to understand in Iceland. If your license is written in simplified Chinese, Arabic or any other non-roman alphabet, then you will need to procure either an English version or an International license.

Is it difficult to drive in Iceland?

All the major roadways including the Ring Road are paved and accessible all year around. Make sure you only drive on paved roads, that way you shouldn’t have any problems.

What are the laws & regulations?

The standard speed limits in Iceland are:

• 30-50 km/hour within cities and other populated areas
• 80 km/hour on gravel roads in rural areas
• 90 km/hour on paved roads.

In Iceland the cars are driven on the right side of the road and like in most European countries. You should never drink and drive and make sure you always have your seat belts on. If you need to use the cell phone during driving make sure it’s connected to a hands-free device. The main headlights must be kept on at all times, even during daylight hours. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden as it destroys the environment and natural landscape and can result in a fine up to 5,000 USD. Never park or drive in the middle of the road, always find a safe parking spot or area if you need to stop to enjoy the Icelandic Landscape or Northern Lights.

You can drive on all roads in Iceland except F-roads or mountain roads that are only accessible for special off-road vehicles.  Many of the top Icelandic tourist attractions are located along the Ring Road or other paved roads. The main roads are accessible with a regular car and easy to drive.

John Lloyd has visited and explored Iceland 19 times since his first trip in 2012, completing the Ring Road several times and covering the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes and Vestmannaeyjar too. The results are comprehensive and practical self-drive guides for Iceland. Hey John, and thank you for taking the time for an interview. Your numerous visits to Iceland have culminated in an impressive series of travel guides. What inspired you to focus on this particular destination?

Hi Jón and “takk fyrir” for your kind invitation to chat with you and your readers!

I’m a Brit, and I’ve traveled extensively around Europe over the years. It was the music of Sigur Rós that first got me interested in Iceland. After I saw their concert film “Heima”, I knew I had to see those breathtaking landscapes for myself.

After my first visit to Iceland in 2012, I realized that nowhere else on the planet matched Iceland for magnificent travel experiences.  Once was never going to be enough!

After six more trips, I spent several months in Iceland in 2018, exploring far and wide. Since then, I’ve been writing content for local tour operators, museums, and car rental firms, returning again and again at different times of the year to discover how this magical country changes through the seasons.

I’ve been to other countries since, of course. But I’m always “in-between” my next trip to Iceland!

Your guide books emphasizes self-driven tours. What do you think makes self-driving in Iceland a unique experience?

There’s much to be said for taking organized tours with reputable operators because you’ll learn so much about Iceland’s astonishing natural wonders and Viking history from their experienced guides.

And in the winter, when there are short daylight hours and frequent storms, it’s the safest approach to exploring Iceland in comfort and confidence.

But if you visit Iceland in the summer with endless hours of daylight to explore, self-driving around Iceland frees you from fixed tour schedules and the presence of other travelers, so you can discover Iceland on your terms, not someone else’s.

That’s why I started writing these guides. I wanted people to be able to guide themselves around Iceland, happily and safely supported by helpful text and inspiring photos from someone who’s visited these places many times.

Traditional guidebooks are text-heavy and can’t include as many photos as e-books. For example, you’d have to use your imagination or go online to decide whether Kvernufoss is worth the extra time for a visit.

In my South Coast book, a couple of photos make that an easy decision!

There’s nothing better than discovering the fabulous landscapes of Iceland at your own pace, and self-driving is the best way to do that.

Among the various regions of Iceland you’ve covered, which one do you find most underrated and why?

That’s easy – the North East! The Arctic Coast Way traces a sensationally scenic route around six peninsulas in North Iceland, and I love the stretch on Route 85 between Húsavík and Vopnafjörður.

It’s remote, wild, spectacular and peaceful – this is Iceland “off the beaten track”, with only a few tiny villages facing out towards the Arctic Circle along the way.

But with Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi and the Arctic Henge at Raufarhöfn, there are some fantastic sights to see too. It’s a detour away from the Ring Road, but the roads are good, and the landscapes are unforgettable.

A very close second is the Westfjords , which recently topped Lonely Planet’s list of the best destinations in the world, and I can see why they voted that way!

What are your favorite places and activities in Iceland?

I’ve driven around Iceland on Route 1 five times now, and my favorite part of the country is undoubtedly the Eastfjords.

On clear days, the vistas on the cliff-hugging stretches of the Ring Road between Djúpivogur and Breiðdalsvík will live long in your memory.

There are many special places along the way, like Teigarhorn, Fossardalur and the Hólmanes Peninsula on Route 92. I’d recommend taking it very slow when you’re in the Eastfjords , so you can soak up every second of these mesmerizing sights. And you might see reindeer too!

As for my favorite activities, I always pop into a sundlaug (local swimming pool) whenever I stop to relax, enjoy an evening soak, and chat with the locals. I’ve learned many interesting things about Iceland in one of those pools!

Your self-drive guides for Iceland are very practical. Can you share some key tips for first-time visitors?

Simplify your itinerary: pick two or three “must-see” sights for each day. Try to keep the daily driving distance lower than 200 kilometers or four hours of driving. Savor the sights if you can, rather than rush around on a whistle-stop tour.

Check the weather and road conditions: don’t go anywhere in Iceland without checking Vedur.is , Road.is and SafeTravel.is for their daily reports first.

It’s wise to keep checking these throughout the day, as Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable. And you can look at Live From Iceland’s webcams too.

Staying safe on your Iceland trip and take your time

You can lodge a Travel Plan with SafeTravel, or sign up for free text alerts while you’re in the country. Make use of these vital resources to keep you safe while you’re exploring.

Give yourself time to explore: Iceland is only 500 kilometers wide and less than 300 kilometers from north to south. However, don’t let those numbers deceive you.

Once you leave the wide roads and bright lights of the capital city behind, you’ll start to realize the epic nature of this country and how long it actually takes to get from one place to another.

Google Maps drive times are highly accurate, but relying on them for your itinerary ignores a crucial fact. You’re going to want to stop. Quite often, in fact!

It’s almost impossible to drive from A to B in Iceland like you do at home. That’s because you’ll want to take long looks at the waterfalls, mountains, glaciers, fjords, and volcanoes that decorate the Ring Road at frequent intervals.

Taking time to enjoy these sights will add to your journey times. You can rely on Google Maps for point-to-point driving times when planning your itinerary.

But be sure to build in plenty of leeway for those unscheduled stops to take pictures and enjoy the views of Iceland’s stunning landscapes.

Most importantly, relax and enjoy your time in Iceland. It’s too magical a place to get stressed about scheduling and rushing from one place to the next. That’s what you do at home, not on holiday.

How do you balance the needs of different travelers, such as adventure seekers and those seeking relaxation, in your guides?

My self-driving guides for Iceland provide simple driving instructions from one place of interest, town or village to the next and how many kilometers you’ll need to drive to get there.

That means you can easily create your own itineraries.

You can choose active days filled with hikes to see Svartifoss, Vestrahorn or Stuðlagil , go ice caving or horse riding, whale watching, snowmobiling, or take a boat tour around the Glacier Lagoon .

Or you can enjoy lazy days soaking in the splendid spas at Vök Baths , GeoSea and Forest Lagoon .You can wander the pretty streets of Iceland’s charming towns and villages, sipping coffees and browsing intriguing shops for that special souvenir.

There’s no imperative for you to get from Point A to Point B by the end of the day – you decide how far you want to go, or what you want to see.

That’s rather different from the paid-for itineraries, which often set parameters like that.

So it makes my guides equally useful tools for people with a week or so to circuit the Ring Road, and those with much longer periods who can afford to take their time with a deep dive into Iceland’s marvels.

You set the pace – nobody else should be doing that.

All you need to do is book your own accommodation or choose a campsite for the night. Just remember, popular areas like the South get booked up very quickly, so don’t leave that too long!

What challenges have you faced while compiling your travel guides, and how have you overcome them?

I’m aiming for simplicity and practicality. During my first trip to Iceland, I was overwhelmed by all the resources and information available, so I know what that feels like.

Now, after 19 trips and having lived there, I’ve gained a great deal of knowledge and experience of road trips around Iceland that I can pass on to fellow travelers.

The biggest challenge is to edit all that information into bite-sized chunks of text, enhanced by photos, that will help people understand their options.

The ambition is to put myself in the place of both first-time visitors and regular returners, and give every reader useful and informative tips.

It’s all about helping people make the most of their time in Iceland.

That’s what I love to do.

Hi , planning to visit iceland to see the northern light. Would like to do a self drive with my family. May i know when is the best month to do so ? October?

We have no prior experience driving in winter. This will be the first.

Will we get to see northern light in Sept - Oct period ?

Now, if you are willing to do tours, then that changes my answer a bit. There are some excellent tours, including for the northern lights.

Tours are a better bet to actually see the NL's, as the drivers communicate with one another about cloud cover, etc. Also, driving in the pitch dark, on possibly icy and unfamiliar roads, is best left to the locals.

Not a tour for anything else, but a northern light tour that is excellent is Aurora Experts. We used him on one of our trips and truly cannot speak highly enough about the tour as well as the owner/guide.

For northern lights consider visiting within 2 weeks each side of the autumn equinox (September 22, 2024). For visual of the northern lights go when the Moon is below the horizon at night.

Janice--Aurora Experts and Arctic Adventures are like apples and oranges. AE only does northern lights, and he is truly an expert in this. AA is a tour guide for a multitude of tours, not specializing in any one thing. They will take you to a field with dozens of other buses and hundreds of your new best friends, where AE does not follow the masses and he has a mini bus, so the most people that will be with you are about a dozen. He really knows his stuff. Yes, he costs more than AA, but in this case he is very much worth it, IME.

Day 1: You’ve Arrived in Iceland!

After landing at Keflavik Airport, grabbing your bags and picking up your rental car, you’re ready to start your Iceland adventure. But, of course, you’ve likely just spent the night on the airplane and a bit of refreshing is required. Fortunately, Iceland’s famed hot springs, The Blue Lagoon, is just a 22 minute drive away. Make your reservations before you arrive and head straight to The Blue Lagoon for a dip in this geothermal hot spring because no trip to Iceland is complete without this experience.

Once refreshed, a driving time of 40 minutes brings you to Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital city. If a self drive road trip isn’t part of your itinerary, bus service is available from Keflavik Airport to the Blue Lagoon and on to Reykjavik.

A guided tour by locals is an excellent way to spend your first day in Reykjavik as an introduction to the capital city and Iceland in general. We chose the free tours by locals , a company with knowledgeable and entertaining local guides that lead walking tours of  downtown Reykjavik. The “tip what you think the tour was worth” concept is unique and the tour focuses on highlights like the stunning Hallgrímskirkja church, historic buildings and the city’s colorful neighborhoods. The guided tours introduce visitors to the stories of one of Europe’s most unique countries.

Whale watching tours provide another interesting experience in Reykjavik. Departing from Reykjavik Harbor, the tours not only search for whales but also keep an eye out for puffins and other migratory birds that visit Iceland seasonally.

Day 2: Drive the Golden Circle

Depart Reykjavik on Day Two of your self drive road trip to experience the natural wonders of the Golden Circle. The first stop, Thingvellir National Park harbors history and the marvels of nature within its boundaries. The park sits in a rift valley where the tectonic plates of North America and Europe meet.

Another must-see along the Golden Circle, the geyser geothermal area houses several geysers including Strokkur – Iceland’s most visited active geyser. Walk alongside the geysers and feel the steam as it erupts. Or stretch your legs on the hiking trail for a view overlooking the geothermal area.

Another must-see, Gullfoss Waterfall  – which translates as Golden Falls – is one of Iceland’s most beloved waterfalls. Gullfoss is fed by the waters of Hvítá River that travel from the glacier Langjökull, before cascading 105 feet down the Gullfoss Waterfall’s two dramatic stages.

Continue Along the Ring Road

Next up on the Golden Circle, a stop at South Iceland’s Kerid Crater  seems almost otherworldly. This volcanic lake with deep blue-green water surrounded by red rock and lush mossy vegetation formed over 6500 years ago after an eruption. Allow yourself enough time to explore the hiking trails the circle the rim of Kerid Crater. Or venture down the hiking trails to the waters of the Kerid Crater for another perspective.

Continue east along the Ring Road on a two-hour drive to Vik. Of course those two hours may become three with all the sightseeing possibilities along the south coast of Iceland. Highlights include the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black sand beach and the Fjadrargljufur Canyon.

Overnight near Skaftafell nature reserve and get ready for the next day’s big adventures.

Day 3: Experience Black Sand Beaches and an Ice Cave Tour

Day Three unveils a full day of adventure. Start with a walk along one of Iceland’s most striking black sand beaches. Framed by dramatic basalt columns, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is a must-see. As you make your way along your Ring Road itinerary to Vik, take the turn off to Dyrhólaey to view the spectacular arch in the sea. During nesting season it’s possible to spot puffins and other bird life here. A 19 minute drive east from here leads to the lovely village of Vik.

For an experience off the typical tourist track, book an Ice Cave Tour with Southcoast Adventure . The experience begins with a pick up location in central Vik and a drive through ancient lava fields. You’ll then strap on some crampons for a short glacier hike on the mighty Myrdalsjokull glacier and into the ice cave. Plentiful shops, restaurants and lodging options make Vik an ideal place to overnight before continuing on your Ring Road itinerary.

Day 4: Waterfalls, a Glacier Lagoon and Europe’s Largest Glacier

As you continue east on the Ring Road, a drive time of under two hours brings you to Svartifoss waterfall – another gorgeous must-see waterfall framed by black basalt columns. Continue east to reach the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon where massive icebergs can be seen floating in the lagoon. For an up close view of the floating icebergs, consider taking a glacier lagoon boat tour. Be sure to allow enough time to see nearby Diamond Beach as you follow the road to the breathtaking east fjords. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Höfn and rest up for the next day. From Höfn you’ll have a clear view of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull.

Day 5: Driving and Sightseeing on the Ring Road

Today you’ll continue your Ring Road itinerary driving north to Lake Myvatn. Detour onto Iceland Road 864 for an additional drive time of about an hour to capture spectacular photos of the Dettifoss waterfall.

When you reach Lake Myvatn, more geothermal areas await exploration at Hverir and Kfafla. A must-see, Godafoss waterfall, located in the river Skjálfandafljót in north Iceland, falls from a height of 39 feet and has a width spanning 98 feet. Hiking trails provide an ideal way to see more of this region considered part of the Diamond Circle for sightseeing.

Continue traveling on Ring Road another 45 miles to overnight in Akureyri, the largest city outside of the greater Reykjavik area. Akureyri is a renowned cultural center with many galleries and museums. It’s also home to the world’s northernmost botanical gardens.

Day 6: Travel the Iceland Ring Road to Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Driving in Iceland is an adventure in itself and today’s 230-mile drive from Akureyri to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula proves my point. Drive time typically runs about 4 hours and 30 minutes without stops. But the jaw-dropping vistas along the way beckon you to stop and take photos. A couple of not to be missed sights along the way are Hvítserkur and Kolugljúfur Canyon.

Visible from the impressive black sand beach at Húnaflói Bay, Hvítserkur is a distinctive rock formation often referred to as the Troll of Northwest Iceland. The 49 ft tall basalt sea stack features two unusual holes at its base and creates a silhouette often likened to a dragon drinking from the sea.

A short detour off of Ring Road, the breathtaking Kolugljúfur Canyon and Kolufossar waterfalls make an ideal stop to stretch your legs and take in these beautiful wonders of nature. It’s a short walk from the parking lot to the canyon which is accessed by a footbridge.

As you continue to Snaefellsnes Peninsula, you’ll leave the Ring Road behind to take route 54 at Borgarnes. Overnight nearby to rest up for a full day of adventure on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Day 7: Exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula

While day tours are available from Reykjavik, Snaefellsnes Peninsula deserves a nearby overnight stay to allow a full day to explore this gorgeous peninsula. Home to Kirkjufell – the country’s most photographed mountain – the landscapes leave you breathless. Just steps from Kirkjufell the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls add to the serenity of this place.

A counter-clockwise drive along the Snaefellsnes Peninsula leads you through picturesque fishing villages, miles of lava fields, a volcanic crater and new discoveries at every turn. The peninsula is home to Snaefellsjokull National Park – a park filled with all the geological wonders Iceland offers along with intriguing human history. You’ll find black sand beaches, picturesque churches, soaring cliffs, volcanic craters and miles of lava fields.

When your explorations conclude, an hour’s drive time along Iceland’s west coast leads you back to Reykjavik.

Best Time to Visit Iceland

Deciding when to visit Iceland presents a few choices. If your focus is chasing the Northern Lights, visiting in the aurora season that runs from October until April gives you the best chance. Of course, mid-winter guarantees dark skies for hours, increasing opportunities to view the elusive Northern Lights. But, the downside to a winter visit is limited daylight. So if you want to cover as much of Iceland’s awe-inspiring landscapes in seven days, you may need a season with more light.

Also, for those hoping to self drive on a road trip along the entire Ring Road, winter often means unsafe road conditions due to heavy snow and ice in some areas. For a winter visit, consider guided day trips from areas along the south coast of Iceland.

In summer months, the Northern Lights aren’t visible. But, the midnight sun extends your day giving you more time to explore each destination you visit. If there’s a downside to spending the mild summer months (mosquito free by the way) in Iceland, it’s the crowds. You know that Golden Circle you want to see? Everyone else wants to see it too. That means bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Personally, I prefer the shoulder season. And on our recent visit to Iceland, we arrived in mid-April for a week exploring this magnificent country minus the crowds. It’s early for bird and whale watching, but not impossible to catch a glimpse of some of the early arriving puffins and whales on a boat tour. Lingering Northern Lights are also possible on a clear night in April. Autumn presents another viable option for a crowd-free Iceland road trip.

What to Know Before You Go

Most travelers who visit Iceland arrive at Keflavik Airport. Located 50 kilometers outside the capital city of Reykjavik, Keflavik Airport is a relatively small airport compared to some of our mega-sized airports in the US. It’s also easy to navigate and rental car counters are located inside the airport.

Unless you plan to use a tour company for guided day trips, a rental car is the best way to really explore this magnificent place. Always up for a self drive road trip, we reserved a rental car in advance of our arrival. Small vehicles make the most sense on the narrow-ish roads throughout Iceland, but if you’re venturing outside Reykjavik in search of secret lagoons, lava fields and black sand beaches, it’s best to rent a small SUV with 4-wheel drive. Some roads are unpaved and road conditions are unpredictable so that extra power comes in handy.

Although I don’t typically use the extra insurance offered for rental cars, Iceland’s extreme wind and unpredictable weather warranted the need for rental car insurance just for peace of mind.

Camper vans provide another option for intrepid travelers up for a rugged adventure. Campgrounds throughout Iceland  offer various types of hook-ups and facilities.

Packing for Iceland

Your packing needs for Iceland vary greatly depending on whether you visit in the winter or summer months or the shoulder season I chose. One thing remains the same – you need layers! You also need a waterproof rain jacket. And, of course, pack a swimsuit for soaking in the country’s hot springs. You’ll find more information to aid in planning your packing list here .
