What to do in Sirmione

What to do in Sirmione

Explore the old town

Explore the stunning historical town with castle, Roman ruins, beaches, and gorgeous walks around the town. Sirmione is very small, so it takes up to an hour and a half to visit all the sights. The old town is quite charming and has very narrow streets with quaint shops . If you plan to visit Sirmione in the summer, you will experience the crowded city, so I suggest you stay in another city near the lake and come by boat for a day.

Swim in Garda Lake

If you want to swim in Garda Lake, you should visit Sirmione from June to September , when the water’s average temperature is above 73.4 °F (23 °C). There are plenty of beaches to choose from, but personally, we like Jamaica beach the most.

Sirmione best beach

Jamaica Beach is a flat rock beach with no entrance fee. There you will find beautiful clear blue water and a beach bar servicing decently priced drinks. In summer, shallow warm water over huge smooth stones allows you to lay on the rocks and bask in the area’s beauty. It is never too crowded, and it is very clean. To conclude, Jamaica beach is one of the most beautiful places ever to relax in the water totally.

Book a boat tour

The harbor usually lines up some small boats near the castle offering boat trips around the peninsula. You can choose various boat tours, but the most popular are 30 minutes sunset tour and a half-day tour. If you decide to take a boat tour, we recommend you to go with Bertoldi Boats , because they have the best-rated service. For information about prices and their tour program, you should visit their official website .

Walk in the park

The park is located on your right side when you walk from central Sirmione towards the Catullo Caves and Jamaica Beach. It is named Parco Maria Callas , and it is completely free of charge for visitors. The park itself is a great shady haven at the top of the old town and is a lovely place to sit under a tree on a hot afternoon. A lot of visitors think that the park is part of the nearby Villa Cortina Palace hotel and spa, but it is not. It is definitely a public place which anyone can enjoy.

Sirmione on Lake Garda

Sirmione: all you need to know to visit Lake Garda’s most popular town

All you need to know to plan a trip to Sirmione, one of the most popular towns on Lake Garda, Italy, famous for a breathtaking castle and pleasant thermal baths.

Sirmione is one of the most beautiful towns on Lake Garda and one of the most popular.

It is perched at the top of a thin strip of land stretching onto the lake and it is almost entirely surrounded by water, a position that makes the town unique and very atmospheric.

People come to Sirmione attracted by two prominent landmarks: the Scaligero Castle and the town’s thermal baths, among the most famous in the area and Italy.

If you are planning a trip to Lake Garda, Sirmione is a must see. This is all you need to know to plan a visit.

Please note: this post contains affiliate links. Should you make a purchase, we might make a small commission.

Where is Sirmione + how to get there

Sirmione is on the southern shores of Lake Garda in the Lombardia region. It is located at the very end of a thin peninsula stretching into the lake and the lake surrounds it on three sides.

The closest airport to Lake Garda is Verona and, from there, you can reach Sirmione by bus or car.

Buses connect Sirmione with Peschiera, Desenzano del Garda and Verona, the three main getaways towns to the area and they are also one of the most convenient ways to explore the area.

You can find the bus schedule here (Arriva Bus) and here (Flixbus).

If you prefer to drive, please be advised that Sirmione is closed to traffic and you will have to leave the car outside of the city at the designated car parks. These can be pricey: if staying the night, ask your hotel if they have special deals or if they can recommend arrangements for the car.

The best things to do in Sirmione

Sirmione is a small town but it packs a punch in terms of beauty of its natural position and landmarks.

Visit the Scaligero Castle

The most famous landmark in Sirmione and the most scenic, is Sirmione’s Scaligero Castle. Have you ever seen photos of a castle in Italy inside the water, with turreted walls raising from a blue lake? That is Sirmione’s castle!

The Scaligero Castle is medieval and dates from the XIII century AD. It takes its name from the person who ordered it built: Leonardino della Scala aka Mastino della Scala ( Scaligero = della scala in Italian).

The castle is breathtaking. The building is surrounded by water but doesn’t have a standard moat: the waters of this castle are those of the lake so that the whole building seems to come out of Lake Garda itself!

You access the castle through its main gate and you can climb to the top of the bastions: the walk is not suitable for people with a fear of heights but, if you can take it, it will reward you with a fantastic view of the lake, framed by the ancient castle’s battlements.

Learn about the castle’s ghost

The castle of Sirmione is said to be haunted! Local stories tell us that, in the Middel Ages, the castle was inhabited by a young couple, Arice (wife) and Ebengardo (husband).

One night, a man called Elaberto went to the castle asking for shelter for one night and the young couple agreed.

Elaberto got a glimpse of Arice, felt an irresistible attraction for this young woman and assaulted her during the night. Arice screamed for help but before Ebengardo could safe her, Elaberto had stabbed her to death.

Ebengardo vindicated her death killing Elaberto with the same knife but spent the rest of his life locked in the castle, feeling guilty for being too late to save his wife.

His ghost is still said to haunt the castle!

Explore Sirmione town center

Sirmione is very pretty and perfect for a stroll. The town is closed to traffic by nature of its geography and layout and is a delight of small streets and piazzas.

The best way to explore it is to wander, admire the hidden courtyards and balconies, catch views of the lakes and stopping at the many souvenir shops.

The most famous Sirmione beach is called Jamaica and is indeed very beautiful and another famous beach is Spiaggia delle Muse, that offers nice views of the castle.

In Sirmione you can also enjoy Lido delle Bionde (another beach) while, if you love windsurfing, you should head to Spiaggia Galeazzi, at the base of the peninsula.

Sirmione is a famous thermal destination and has lovely spas to relax and unwind. The most famous are Aquaria (wellness and thermal spa), Terme di Catullo and Terme di Virgilio, offering thermal baths, massages and and rehab packages.

one of the best ways to appreciate and admire Sirmione’s position is by getting a boat tour that lets you see the town from the water. There are several to choose from, at different price points: you can try your luck on the day or, better, book one you like in advance.

You can have a look at a couple of options:

  • 25 min motorboat tour around the Sirmione Peninsula
  • Lake Garda Tour from Sirmione with pizza and prosecco

A vacation guide to the lake garda town of sirmione—medieval castles, roman ruins, and resort hotels.

If you look closely at a map of Lake Garda , from the very middle of the flat, southern end of the lake springs a long, skinny peninsula, rarely more than a few hundreds yards wide, jutting about two miles into the lake.

At this tip of this spit of land sits Sirmione, the loveliest town on Lake Garda .

The Castle - Castello Scagliero

(Not that I advise driving through town. There's basically one street , crammed with pedestrians, so you inch along much more slowly than if you were walking, squeezing the other tourists up against the walls and getting very dirty looks for about 20 minutes. Still, it's cool to be stopped at the castle gate by a guard—even if you're just in a rented Fiat rather than atop a white stallion.)

Though the interior is almost barren, the climb up the 93-foot tower is worth it for the panorama.

The Castello Scagliero is at Piazza Castello 1, Sirmione ( tel . +39- 030-916-468).

It's open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30am to 7:30pm (October to March, it closes at 4:30pm).

The town's real show-stopper, though, is the ruined complex of a Roman villa at the promontory's very tip called the Grotte di Catullo.

The Roman villa - Grotte di Catullo

It is not, however, a grotto, nor did it ever belong to Catullus.

The ancient Roman poet Catullus, whose family was from Verona, did, indeed, take his holidays at Sirmione. However, there is zero evidence that this vast ancient complex was actually his villa.

In fact, it was probably built after his death, sometime in the 1st century BC atop a series of underwater caves containing some of the natural hot springs that well up in spots all over the waters of Garda.

It was misnamed a "grotto" because, in later centuries, the romantically overgrown ruins, covered in an olive grove twittering with birdsong, seemed to be a network of underground caves.

You can visit these surviving passageways, some retaining decorative stuccoes, only on guided tours.

The Grotte di Catullo is located on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula at Piazzale Orti Manara 4 ( tel . +39-030-916-157, www.archeologica.lombardia.beniculturali.it ).

Its open hours are slightly complicated, but basically:

  • March to October it's open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30am to 7:30pm, Sunday from 9:30am to 6:30pm.
  • Novemebr to February , it's open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30am to 4:30pm (though the small museum on site stays open until 7:30pm), Sunday from 8:30am to 2pm.

Sirmione is a comune in the province of Brescia, on the peninsula of the same name in Lake Garda . The Ancient Roman poet Catullus, whose family owned a villa here, wrote an affectionate poem in praise of Sirmione. The surviving ruins of a magnificent Roman villa are popularly associated with the name of Catullus, though there is no solid evidence that the villa is the same or on the same spot as the one Catullus refers to.

Sirmione Travel Tips

12 Travel Tips for Visiting Sirmione – Everything you Need to Know

Lake Garda is the crown jewel of Northern Italy – known for its beautiful blue waters, rugged mountains and charming villages dotted along the shoreline. One of the most picturesque towns in Lake Garda is of course Sirmione. The peninsula of Sirmione juts out from the southern shore for 4km, offering epic views of the lake and direct access to its lovely waters.

Summer is the best time to stroll around its pretty alleyways, browse through craft shops, enjoy an ice cream, swim in the lake at Jamaica Beach and take a romantic sunset boat trip with Garda Tours . Not to mention exploring the magnificent Scaligero Castle which has the greatest views of the peninsula, hands down. Yet, Sirmione is a stunning place to visit all year round – with the hot springs providing the perfect excuse for a winter trip.

While traveling to Sirmione is relatively straightforward, there are still some important things to know beforehand. In this article, we will be sharing 12 Sirmione travel tips to help you plan the perfect getaway. Everything from accommodation to transport to tours will be covered, ensuring that you are equipped with the right knowledge to make the most out of your vacation.

Sirmione Travel Tips

Travel Tips for Visiting Sirmione

1. summer is best but winter is nice too.

Being situated on a lake means Sirmione is naturally suited for summer. During the peak of summer – June, July and August – the quaint streets get busy with both locals and tourists who all flock to the peninsula to soak up the sun and go sightseeing. Temperatures creep up to the high 20’s and early 30’s (Celsius), and this warm weather encourages swims at the beach and boat tours to explore the endless natural beauty of Lake Garda.

That being said, the shoulder season of April – May and September – October is just as delightful. Temperatures during these months hover around 20°C and there are less tourists to contend with. It probably won’t be hot enough to go swimming but all of the other sights and experiences of Sirmione can be enjoyed in shorts and t-shirt attire. The other option is to visit in winter when the hot pools lure you in for a warm soak.

2. Visit from Monday – Friday to Avoid the Crowds

Sirmione might be off the beaten path for tourists but that’s certainly not the case for Italians. Sirmione is well known with residents of the north and they come here in summer when they have time – public holidays and weekends. If you are set on visiting in July and have some flexibility in your itinerary, we suggest planning your stay for the mid-week. Even during the peak of summer this will give you a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere.

Sirmione Travel Tips

3. Plan for at Least Two or Three Full Days

Day trips are the most popular form of travel to Sirmione. And while you can definitely tick off a lot of must-do’s in 24 hours, we recommend visiting for two or three days (especially in summer) so you can better experience the spirit of this wonderful village. That doesn’t mean you have to stay in the historic center, as it can get pricey. You could always book an affordable stay on the outskirts of town and take day trips into the peninsula.

4. Park in Colombare or Lugana for Cheaper Rates

There are many ways to get to Sirmione like taking a bus, train or plane. If you are arriving by your own means, in a car or camper, and only want to visit for the day then it’s best to park before the drawbridge to avoid the expensive parking. Car access to the historic center is limited in order to protect the pedestrian areas. However, there are shuttle services that operate from the car parks in Colombare (a town before Sirmione).

Another great way to reach Sirmione is to walk along the lakeside promenade which runs from Colombare and Santa Maria di Lugana. You can park your car at either of these two towns and enjoy a leisurely stroll. For those staying in the historic center, a parking service is available for hotel guests called Grifo Parking. Once the cars are checked in, an electric vehicle transfers guests (and luggage) to their respective accommodation.

Lugana

5. Stay in the Historic Center if your Budget Allows it

Depending on your budget, you might have the funds to stay in the historic center. This is by far the best way to immerse yourself in the seductive way of life that 8,000 Sirmione residents enjoy. Hotels from the amazing 3-star Hotel Catullo to the opulent 5-star Villa Cortine Palace Hotel can all be found on the peninsula, but there aren’t hostels available for backpackers. They should look elsewhere, in the surrounding villages, for cheaper places.

6. Booking a Boat Trip with Garda Tours is a Must

Sirmione is a captivating destination to visit in its own right, yet the main attraction is without doubt Lake Garda. This is especially true in summer when the blue waters of the lake entice you in for a swim or a boat tour. Garda Tours are the only name you need to know if you wish to explore the lake’s attractions, such as Isola del Garda or Punta San Vigilio.

They offer some incredible private tours in Sirmione which take you and your traveling companions to breathtaking sights within this 370 km² body of water. Couples will love the sunset boat tour . Many famous poets (such as Carducci and Goethe) were inspired by Garda’s golden hour and you will be too. One evening should be dedicated to this experience, as the gorgeous sunset colors that beam down on the lake are simply astonishing.

In addition to the sunset tour, we can’t help but recommend the Isola del Garda tour as well because this (the biggest island of Lake Garda) boasts lush gardens and remarkable architecture. Garda Tours are highly rated, having earned Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice award two years in a row. So you can read through their stellar reviews and book with confidence.

Garda Tours

7. See all the Sights that Sirmione has to Offer

For such a teeny-tiny village, Sirmione packs a big punch when it comes to sightseeing – there are so many things to see (which is why we suggest spending two or three days in the town). For starters, you will want to check out the Scaligero Castle. It was built in the 13th century and used from the 14th century onwards as a defensive fortress and small port. As the name suggests, the Scaligeri family commissioned the building of the castle.

After learning about the history of the Scaligero Castle, the next attraction we recommend is the archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo. Ruins of an ancient Roman village is what Grotte di Catullo offers – with a number of old buildings, crumbling walls and stone arches to marvel at. Since it’s situated on the northern tip of Sirmione, right by the water, you will be able to take in beautiful vistas of the lake as you wander around the site.

Scaligero Castle

8. Head to Jamaica Beach for your Swimming Needs

Jamaica Beach is regarded as the best beach in Sirmione. It gets quite busy during the summer, so try to arrive early in the morning if you want to enjoy a slice of the beach with no one else around. The waters at Jamaica are crystal-clear and super refreshing. It’s the perfect place to cool down after a long day of sightseeing and exploring. There is a bar at the beach where you can buy a cool beverage or aperitif and relax even further.

9. Try the Gelato and Ice Cream in Summer

It’s not hard to find gelato in Sirmione. The historic center’s main street is teeming with ice cream shops, each new one offering more flavors than the last. For a challenge, why not order three big scoops at a whopping price of around €10. It will take you an age to finish but three scoops means three different flavors. Just make sure you finish before it melts in the sun.

10. Have a Meal at a Michelin-Star Restaurant

Foodies will be in heaven as they explore the small but great range of restaurants on offer in Sirmione. La Rucola 2.0 is a Michelin-starred restaurant serving up all sorts of creative dishes like sea urchins and pigeon breast. If that hasn’t whetted your appetite, there are some classic pastas to savor like peppercorn carbonara paired with homemade bread and flavorsome butter. The restaurant is located behind the Scaligero Castle.

11. Expect an Expensive but Thoroughly Enjoyable Trip

Sirmione can be as expensive or cheap as you make it. If you are staying and eating in the area closest to the castle, don’t expect a budget-friendly trip. However, there are still plenty of ways to save coin such as staying outside of town and parking in Colombare. This way you will be able to save your money for a few special experiences like the boat trip with Garda Tours and a nice meal out – or a gigantic three-scoop gelato at €10 a pop.

Sirmione Travel Tips

12. Explore More of the Lake Garda Area

Sirmione is the greatest attraction of Lake Garda but by no means is it the only one. While you travel, why not enjoy all that the lake has to offer. Malcesine is another exquisite town where you can find epic views. Limone sul Garda is a hidden gem of the north with its lemon trees and lake vistas. Riva del Garda shouldn’t be overlooked as well. Make a week of it and explore as much of the lake as you can, with Sirmione being your priority.

Malcesine

Known to everyone as “ the pearl of the islands and peninsulas” thanks to Catullo, Sirmione is famous for it’s thermal water with it’s healing properties. Situated on the south bank of Lake Garda, in correspondence with a long and narrow peninsula that divides the gulfs of Desenzano and Peschiera, Sirmione was made even more famous thanks to writers such as Catullo, Stendhal, Lawrence and Goethe that honoured its artistic and environmental beauty. Remembered as "Mansio" (together with other public buildings subject to a decurion), after the fall of the Roman Empire, Sirmione became a part of the Longobard kingdom, and in the XII century, it had its own independent administration from Verona. During the Scaligera regime, in XIII century, a wall was built around it and also an impressive fortress, after that it passed to Venice in the XV century. Apart from hosting a Spa of international level, it also has a rich historical and artistic heritage, that includes the ruins of an ancient Roman Villa of the first imperial era, known as the Catullo Grottoes , the Scaligera Fortress and the church of "S. Pietro" in Mavino , that dates back to at least VIII century. The city centre is characterised by the narrow alleys with the walls of stone,  offering its visitors romantic and suggestive views. Today Sirmione is one of the most important tourist centres of the Garda Lake, with sports and recreational facilities to  practise the water sports (windsurfing, sailing, etc.) and hotel establishments and services at an international level, able to satisfy the needs of even the most demanding clients. To visit: Castello Scaligero – Villa Romana “Grotte di Catullo” – Chiesa di S. Pietro in Mavino – Chiesa di S. Anna della Rocca – Passeggiata delle Muse fino al Lido delle Bionde

- sirmione, italy.

sirmione tourist information office

Sirmione is an absolute charm ball landmarked by pillars, arcaded colonnades and a romantic Medieval castle. Jutting out into clear turquoise waters along a narrow peninsula on the southern shores of Italy's  Lake Garda  (Lago di Garda), this destination is picture-card-perfect.

Aficionados of Sirmione date back to Roman poet Catullus, the founder of the love poem, who was believed to have lived on the lake from 84-54 B.C. In poem 31, he writes, " Sirmio, jewel of islands, jewel of peninsulas, with what joy, what pleasure I gaze at you ". In Frater Ave Atque Vale, Alfred Lord Tennyson immortalised Sirmione's beauty with 'O venusta Sirmio!.

Another captivated resident 'diva' was the legendary opera singer, Maria Callas, who came here to rest out of the spotlight; it was her Refugio. More recently, the cult movie  Call Me By Your Name  was partly filmed here, including the trio's sunset dip at nearby Spiaggia Giamaica, aka Jamaica Beach.

Thermal baths kept the Romans happy, and so you should defo make a pitstop at one of the town's present offerings: Terme di Catullo and Terme di Virgilio. Architectural highlights include the Roman archaeological ruins of " Grotte di Catullo " from the 1st-century B.C. (the most important Roman site in Northern Italy), the 13th-century fortress, Scaligero Castle, posh villas, modernism, and even Bauhaus converge in this lakeside town. Flit across the water to nearby Desenzano del Garda and pop into the cathedral, which has an unconventional  Last Supper  by Tiepolo and the church of San Pietro in Mavino is adorned with frescoes.

With boats pulling into the arcaded Venetian harbour, the port quayside is busy with ferries, catamarans and hydrofoils. Cool off in the waters of Lake Garda on a warm summer's day at Jamaica Beach, meander through cobbled streets over a Gelato, it is Italy after all, and soak up the charisma of Sirmione with a chilled Aperol Spritz to hand; the scene is rather romantic and beautiful. You can see why so many have fallen in love with Sirmione.

Torri del Benaco

On the eastern shore of Lake Garda, the small Italian town of Torri del Benaco is perhaps a microcosm of that all is agreeable about Lago di Garda, a region that’s bewitched visitors since Roman times. A covetable lakeside setting, a historical heart, a pretty harbour, pebbly beaches, a medieval castle and fragrant citrus groves, backed by forested hills, Torri del Benaco is a cute-as-pie pitstop for your modern-day Grand Tour exploration.

Sirmione: Lake Garda Tourist Guide

Popular and pretty historical town on Lake Garda

About Sirmione

Sirmione is one of the most popular holiday resorts on the shores of Lake Garda in northern Italy. The small historic town is located on the tip of a long peninsula protruding from the southern shore of the lake between Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera. Sirmione has thermal springs and was a spa destination even in Roman times – you can visit some impressive Roman ruins at the end of the promontory. The town is in the province of Brescia , in the Lombardy region of Italy.

Sirmione is a pleasant place to stay, with lots of comfortable hotels, some in the town centre and others spread along the green pensinsula. They’re designed for relaxing stays, with sun terraces, pools or private beaches. The town itself offers short strolls, a couple of tourist attractions and lake views.

Although Sirmione is very attractive, its small historical heart gets choked with tourists. For atmosphere, you’re really better off visiting out of season. Almost all the businesses in Sirmione are aimed at tourists – naughty postcards, souvenirs, ice creams – and unfortunately most of the restaurants are also tourist standard. We found a very nice spot with reasonable prices however, where we were able to sit outdoors and enjoy a good meal: the Caffè Margherita.

Visiting Sirmione

The historical centre of Sirmione is pedestrianised; its narrow winding lanes busy with tourists. Orienting yourself can be confusing, but the town is so small that you can’t get lost for long. Sirmione is picturesque throughout, but its two main tourist attractions are the castle and the Roman ruins. A panoramic walk (signposted) leads out around the the promontory, and on a clear day you can enjoy great views over the lake and towards the mountains in the north.

Sirmione, Lake Garda

The town is dominated by a thirteenth-century castle, the Rocca Scaligera , defended by a moat patrolled by swans and ducks. It is a real fairytale castle from the exterior. As our boat approached Sirmione recently, a little girl cried in Italian ‘It’s Cinderella’s castle!’. The castle – a fortress, really – is open to the public. The interior is not much more than an empty shell, but visitors can explore the ramparts, admire views over Lake Garda and climb the tower. It’s a good treat for children.

The ruined Roman villa – Villa Romana – out at the end of the headland is large and impressive. The poet Catullus had a family home in the Sirmione area, so historically this site has been associated with him, and known as the Grotte di Catullo (‘caves of Catullus’). However the villa is of a slightly later date and of a scale and grandeur suggesting a very important and rich owner. The ruins (closed Mondays) are in a lovely setting surrounded by lake, with lizards scuttling through olive groves. Visitors can wander through the ruined walls and admire archaeological finds – including a charming carving of rabbits – in the small museum.

When holiday-makers have exhausted the things to see in Sirmione, it’s a short boat or bus journey into nearby Desenzano del Garda, or a rather longer trip towards the other lake resorts. Children will be desperate to visit the Gardaland theme park, while adults may prefer day trips to Verona.

Like several other Italian resorts, Sirmione bans visitors from walking around its streets wearing swimming costumes – bare-chested and skimpily-clad foreigners can give offence.

Sirmione transport

Sirmione is connected to Lake Garda’s other destinations by ferries which depart from a jetty in the centre of town. A ticket kiosk is close by. The town is on a bus route between Brescia and Verona, so is easy to reach from those towns, each of which has a budget airport. The nearest railway stations are in the neighbouring lakeshore towns of Peschiera and Desenzano del Garda. You can catch the bus or a ferry from either of these towns to Sirmione.

Sirmione has a signposted exit from the autostrada which connects Milan with Venice. If you are staying in the historic centre, you will only be allowed to drive into the pedestrianised zone with confirmation of your hotel booking.

Is Sirmione worth visiting?

Sirmione is definitely worth visiting. There are several great things to do here, such as going to a thermal spa, exploring a castle, visiting the beach and admiring its lake views.

How to get to Sirmione ?

Verona Airport (Valerio Catullo) is the closest airport to Sirmione, located around 30 kilometers away. You can book a flight to Verona Airport, which serves both domestic and international flights.

Once you arrive at Verona Airport, take a taxi or a shuttle to Verona’s main train station, Verona Porta Nuova. From here you can take bus to Sirmione. The journey usually takes around an hour to an hour and a half.

Bring cash with you just in case, as they don’t always accept payment by card.

Bus in Sirmione

From Verona Airport you can also choose to get to Sirmione by taxi. This takes approximately 30 minutes. This is what we personally did and it cost us 72 euros in total for one-way. It was a very convenient way of transportation and the taxi could bring us near to the gate.

Taxi stand at Verona Airport

If you prefer flexibility, you can rent a car at the airport. Sirmione is well-connected by road, and it’s a relatively short drive from Verona (around 30 minutes). You can take the A4 motorway and follow the signs for Sirmione. Do keep in mind that Sirmione is a limited traffic zone.

During the warmer months, you can also reach Sirmione by boat. Regular ferry services operate on Lake Garda, connecting various towns around the lake. This is a scenic way to arrive in Sirmione.

Boat in Sirmione

Important tip: if you want to get back to Verona from Sirmione by public transport, in theory there is a direct bus. However, when we took the bus the direct bus never arrived. Instead, you had to hop on a different bus and get off at stop number 9 to change buses.

While this was advertised, you could not pay by card in the bus. So it’s highly advisable to bring some cash with you. A bus ticket cost us 4.90€ per person to get from Sirmione to Verona. We only had 8.90€ in cash, but the bus driver was nice enough to let us on.

Sirmione is a very walkable place. The town is relatively small, and many of its attractions are within walking distance. You can also rent a bike to explore its surroundings.

Sirmione is a limited traffic zone, so getting around by car here is not advisable. If you have difficulties with walking, there are golf cars that go around the town.

When to visit Sirmione?

It’s best to visit Sirmione between May and October, when the weather is at its best. During the summer months, it can get pretty crowded in Sirmione, so personally I would say that May, June, September and October are the best months to visit.

How many days in Sirmione?

It’s recommendable to stay for at least three days in Sirmione. You can easily stay here for a week or longer if you’re using Sirmione as your base to explore more of the area or if you just want to relax for a week.

Where to stay in Sirmione, italy?

There are some lovely options for your stay in Sirmione. However, I highly recommend the following accommodations:

Villa Paradiso

Our stay at Villa Paradiso is what made our visit to Sirmione unique. Some may say it’s a little outdated, but it’s a classical charm that makes this place so authentic and special.

The garden is very large, filled with flowers, greenery and several spots to relax. There is a whirlpool which you can use between 4 and 8 pm. You can reserve it by scanning a QR code.

Breakfast is included in the price and is served on the beautiful terrace outside. There’s a self service kitchen as well, where you can grab drinks and write down what you got and pay for it at the end of your stay.

Villa Paradiso

The owner is very kind. Besides, it’s away from tourist madness. It feels like a world away from crowds and truly is a paradise.

It’s definitely one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been to. The historic city centre of Sirmione is around 8 minutes away by foot. If you’re interested in a more elaborate review of our stay here, you will find it over here .

The villa is located a little uphill so keep this in mind. The rooms are comfortable and have a private bathroom and nice views overlooking the lake. Click here to view its rates and availability.

Villa Cortine Palace Hotel

If you’re looking for a very luxurious or once-in-a-lifetime kind of stay, then you should stay at Villa Cortine Palace Hotel . This is easily one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen. The grounds the hotel sits on and the views overlooking Lago di Garda are truly breathtaking.

The hotel rooms are spacious and very comfortable and the breakfast & restaurants are wonderful as well. The only downside of this hotel would be its price, however if you have the money to spend, then it’s definitely worth booking. Click here to view its rates and availability.

Villa Cortine

Hotel Meridiana

A less expensive option than the previous mentioned hotel is Hotel Meridiana . This hotel also has a nice restaurant named Bon Ton Bistrot.

Elia and Margarita are the very friendly and helpful owners. They are passionate about providing local products on their menu.

The hotel’s location is a lot more quiet than the centre of Sirmione, yet within a few minutes walk you’ll find lots of shops and restaurants.

The best things to do in Sirmione

There are several great things to do in Sirmione. These include the following:

One of the best things to do here is to visit Jamaica Beach. Definitely bring water shoes with you though! The rocks in the water are very slippy, so you’ll need these If you want to go swimming.

There’s a beach bar here called Jamaica Beach. Drinks are served in plastic cups and you have to order your drinks at the bar. Alternatively, there’s a more quiet place a few minutes away from here called Bar Grotte di Catullo.

Scaligero Castle

The Scaligero Castle is the standout attraction in Sirmione, and a must-visit. This medieval fortress, surrounded by the stunning waters of Lake Garda, represents the town’s rich history. It’s one of the best preserved Italian castles.

St. Pietro Chuch, located 10 minutes away from Sirmione’s historic centre, is a beautiful religious site. It’s a simple yet elegant small Catholic church. It doesn’t get as much visitors as the historic centre or Scaligero Castle, yet it’s definitely worth visiting. Besides, it’s free to visit.

St Pietro

Lido delle Bionde Beach

For a day of sun, sand, and relaxation, you can head over to Lido delle Bionde Beach. This beach on Lake Garda’s shores offers clear waters and a clean, sandy shoreline. There are many things to do in Verona, such as walking through its centre, admiring its theatre and just soaking up its vibrant atmosphere.
