I enjoyed all the activities but do ensure you were good shoes for the home. recommend that a visit to the cheese factory is added the morning you arrive on Sao Jorge.

PREAMBLE This was the first Explore tour we have taken so I don’t know whether my experience was typical of their tours. Overall it was satisfactory and I enjoyed the tour. I do not regret booking this holiday but there are clearly some improvements that could be made. TOUR LEADER It hurts me to say it but Tania, the tour leader, was not up to the job. She tried hard and as a hiking guide she was very good, keeping the group together and encouraging those who were having difficulty. She was energetic and enthusiastic but as an organizer and communicator she was hopeless. She would announce a plan and you could almost guarantee that the plan would change, often several times. In addition, she did not make sure that everyone heard these announcements so different members of the group were working off different versions of the plan. Another problem was that she would say things that later turned out to be untrue. For example, she discouraged us from visiting the lava tunnels on Terceira because she said that the ones on Pico were free to visit. This was not true. Because of this tendency to make stuff up, it was hard to trust anything she said. The wisdom of treating her statements with caution was proved several times. I don’t know what instructions Tania was given about optional hikes but the notion of “options” means, to me, that each person can choose between the various options irrespective of what others in the group might prefer. This was not the way that it worked. She was very insistent that everyone did the same thing. So, on the 3rd Sao Jorge day, there were two hikes offered (one of which was different from those in the itinerary provided by Explore) but she insisted that everyone did the same hike, or no hike at all. Now obviously she cannot be in two places at once, but there is no reason that she has to accompany everyone. We were all experienced walkers who have done dozens of hikes without a guide. The trails in Azores are well marked and there was no reason at all that one group could travel without Tania. I will return to this issue in the section below headed ‘Hikes’. As I informed Explore, shortly before the tour I underwent surgery that meant that I was unable to carry my suitcase. I also told Tania so that she would understand why my wife was doing the heavy lifting. We would not expect Tania or any of the other customers to assist us. However, I would have thought that, where there was the option of putting us on the ground floor of hotels without a lift, she would have done so. There were two hotels without a lift, in Praia da Vitoria and in Horta. In both cases there were rooms on the ground floor that some members of our group occupied. In both cases we were put on an upper floor meaning that my wife had to struggle with our bags on the stairs. Tania had no regard for making it easier for us, which was quite disappointing. Although Tania gives the impression that she has been leading this tour for several years, I note from another review that, in May 2019, the leader was “Mandy” who received excellent reviews. Maybe Tania is new to the Explore tour and is still trying to get on top of the details. This is the most charitable interpretation that I can place on her confusing instructions. Perhaps Tania should be replaced with Mandy, if she is still available, until Tania is properly trained. ACCOMMODATION The hotels were generally good; not first class but usually perfectly adequate. The exception was the hotel on Sao Miguel where we stayed for four nights. I thought the accommodation was substandard. In addition, it was not well situated, well away from the main tourism centre. The joining hotel sets a level of expectation and it should not be the worst place on the tour. Explore really needs to find somewhere better; there is no shortage of accommodation in Ponta Delgada. I did have a minor gripe with the Hotel Caravelas in Madalena. Some of our group (and Tania) had a complimentary basket of fruit in their room while others (including us) didn’t. If we were all paying the same then we should be treated equally. I pointed this out to Tania (who treated it as a joke) and to reception, but no fruit was provided. TRANSPORT The land transport provided was fine. It was a bit of a mixed bag, but nothing was inadequate. Generally, distances and travel times are short in The Azores so some occasional minor discomfort was easily tolerable. My main complaint concerns two of the transfers. Going from Terceira to Sao Jorge we were on a 4 pm flight. Because we needed to check out from the hotel at around 1 pm, there was really nothing useful we could do in the morning except see the very limited attractions in Praia da Vitoria. By the time we got to the hotel on Sao Jorge it was too late to do anything there so effectively the whole day was wasted. This would be acceptable if there had been no alternative. But there was a 10:30 am flight and if we had been on that we would have had an entire afternoon to explore Velas. To make a badly planned situation worse, the 4 pm flight didn’t take off until nearly 5:30 pm. The opposite problem occurred with the ferry transfer from Pico to Faial. We were made to get up early and have a rushed breakfast in order to catch the 8:15 am ferry. We arrived at the hotel in Horta before 9 am and were told to go away for 6 hours because our rooms would not be ready until 3 pm. There were ferries at 10 am and at 11:30 am which we could have taken. Either would have allowed plenty of time to explore Horta, relax in the hotel, or both. Note that in the itinerary provided by Explore we were supposed to transfer to Faial in the afternoon. Tania gave no explanation for the silly change in plan. HIKES There is a fundamental problem with the hikes that needs some thought. The information provided on the Explore website about the four included hikes suggests that the pace would be fairly easy and within the capabilities of relatively slow walkers such as me and my wife. We were not the only slow ones. At the same time, some of our group were very fast, no doubt attracted to the tour by the longer and more difficult optional hikes. So, the fast ones were constantly having to stop, which is unfair to them. Meanwhile, the slow ones were going as fast as they could. Tania was caught in the middle with no way of keeping everyone happy. The only solution I can suggest is to split the group. Maybe Explore need to have an extra hiking guide although, as mentioned above, the trails are well marked and most people would be able to follow a trail without a guide.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Portugal

We had a fantastic time. Exploring the island through jeep tour and kayaking was exhilarating. The whale watching and local food experiences were delightful, and the guides were truly local and knowledgeable. This tour was an unforgettable journey, would take it again, thank yuou.
We started our vacation in Lisbon, with 4 days of guided tours with Pedro. He was wonderful - always on time, so courteous, and a wealth of information. It would be hard to find someone with more knowledge of the history of his country. He shared so much detail about each of the sites we visited, and was able to answer any questions. If you get a chance to book a tour with Pedro, do it. You won’t be disappointed!

small group travel to portugal

Perched on the Iberian Peninsula bordering Spain, Portugal has never quite attracted the same level of tourist interest as its neighbouring continental counterparts, but its distinct culture makes it a worthy alternative. While many chose to explore the country independently, there are also a wide number of group tours available which allow you to meet and share your experiences with fellow travellers. We’ve picked out 5 of the best small-group tours of Portugal currently on offer.

Highlights of Portugal (7 days)

Today in Sintra, you have the choice of two activities. First you may choose to explore the quaint hilltop village independently, making your way along the winding streets lined with cork products, pastries, and local cafes. Your other option is to venture into the National Palace of Sintra, the country’s best-preserved palace from the Middle Ages, with the support of audioguides.

Start your trip to Portugal early with 3 nights in Porto, the jewel of Portugal set along the Douro River. The second-largest city in Portugal is home to incredible architecture and stunning cathedrals, a UNESCO-protected historic center from the middle ages, and of course – Port wine. Everywhere you turn in this visually stunning city will show you examples of baroque architecture, the romanticism movement and its monumental designs. Your stay in Porto will be perfectly balanced between guided excursions and free time, allowing you to get to know Porto on a deeper level.

  • Overnight Flight
  • Travel on your overnight flight to Porto, Portugal.
  • Porto, Portugal - Tour Begins
  • Arrive in Porto, a city that’s steeped in history and built with an artistic architectural eye. Here, you’ll find quiet cafes perfect for sipping a glass of Port wine and watching the world go by. You may choose to venture out and head toward the Douro River where so much of the history of this city started. You may even see a reproduction rabelo boat, traditionally used to transport Port wine from the wineries up river to the city of Porto.
  • Porto - Vila Nova de Gaia - Porto
  • Get to know this captivating city with a walking tour led by a local expert. Take in the grandeur of Praça da Liberdade Square, Sao Bento Train Station and its iconic azulejo tiles, and a visit to the Palácio da Bolsa, the Stock Exchange Palace, to see the legendary “Arab Room.” Meet a local chocolate maker at a family-run chocolatier store that has been in business for almost 100 years. Cross the Dom Luis I bridge into the neighboring city of Vila Nova de Gaia where we will visit a wine cellar for a tour and tasting. The afternoon is yours. Tonight, you’ll find out why Porto is regarded as a culinary hotspot during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Today is yours to explore Porto how you’d like. Take advantage of this day at leisure – maybe heading into the Livraria Lello, considered to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world or visiting a local restaurant to try the famous local delicacy, the “francesinha” sandwich.
  • Porto - Lisbon - Cascais
  • Board a train* to Lisbon, where you’ll transfer to Cascais to join your tour and start the next leg of your travels.

Extend your stay in Portugal with 3 nights on the island paradise of Madeira and 1 night in Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital city. Considered to be the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” Madeira combines nature - it's gushing streams, irrigation channels and botanical gardens - with culture such as wine tasting and watching embroiderers and wicker weavers at work. Enjoy a full day at leisure to soak up the island’s charms however you please. Spend time in traditional villages, venture along winding mountain roads, and splash in natural volcanic swimming pools. Your mini-tour ends with a night in Lisbon, whose captivating energy and mouth-watering culinary scene will capture your heart (and stomach!).

  • Lisbon - Funchal, Madeira
  • Fly to Madeira Island, the “pearl of the Atlantic” where you will arrive in the early afternoon. Madeira boasts a subtropical climate, majestic mountain ranges and volcanic caves. After some free time for lunch on your own in the colorful Santa Maria district, be led on a walking tour of Funchal’s old downtown with its quaint narrow streets and historical sites, such as the 15th century cathedral. Visit the Botanical Garden of Madeira with its collection of more than 2,500 plants from all continents.
  • The day is yours. During your free time, you may choose to visit the Sacred Art Museum and learn how the sugar-cane trade allowed for the purchase of Flemish art dating back to the 15th century. Or simply relax and enjoy the amenities that your hotel has to offer. Then gather in the evening for a traditional dinner known as an espetada. Folk dancers and lively music entertain you as you feast on a favorite local dish cooked over an open fire.
  • Funchal - Câmara de Lobos - Porto Moniz - Funchal
  • Begin your day with a tour that takes you to Câmara de Lobos, a traditional village on a picture-perfect bay that served as a special retreat for Sir Winston Churchill. It was here that Madeira’s natural beauty captivated him and inspired many of his paintings of the island. Drive along mountain roads, passing banana plantations and vineyards while en route to the world’s second-highest cliff, Cabo Girão. After, visit a sugar mill and learn about the importance of sugar cane production in the early 15th century. Sample some local specialties made at the mill before leaving for the fishing village of Porto Moniz. Here, enjoy free time for a swim* (weather permitting) in the natural volcanic rock pools before returning to Funchal.
  • Funchal - Lisbon
  • Board your flight and return to the metropolitan energy of Lisbon. Enjoy your afternoon as you please.

Fado: the perfect blend of voice and guitar. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Patrimony, as a celebrated form of world music that captures what it is to be Portuguese. The word Fado comes from the Latin word fatum, which means fate or destiny. It is a style of music that is all about deep feelings: the disappointments of love, the ups and downs of life. No one knows quite how Fado first came into being, but to this day, Portugal's traditional music remains at the very heart of the country's culture. In one of Lisbon’s most popular Fado restaurants, professional performers entertain you while you enjoy a typical Portuguese three-course dinner with wine included.

Set sail on the clear blue waters of the Bay of Lagos to experience the stunning Ponta da Piedade with some of the most beautiful and famous coastal scenery in Portugal, including pristine beaches and rocky cliffs that are simply breathtaking. What To Know

  • You can use your bank card to pay almost anywhere in Europe.
  • If you need some local cash, it is best to use an ATM. This is true for all European countries, except for Hungary. When you withdraw cash from an ATM, the currency conversion will be done automatically by your bank, and the exchange rate will usually be much better than if you exchange currency at a local bank.
  • The tour program includes some walking tours, we recommend you to pack comfortable shoes.

Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Portugal Tour Selection Trips

  • Spanish and Portuguese are two very different languages. They may sound similar at first, but the majority of Portuguese people do not understand Spanish, and English is not commonly spoken.
  • Portugal is quite small and tour itineraries often also include nearby Spain and Morocco
  • Portuguese food is heavy in seafood! Get ready for some of the best fish, octopus, and other delights from the sea you’ve ever tasted. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, be sure to let your tour operator know far enough in advance.

Additional details

Tours in Portugal cover a very wide range of activity levels and interests. If you want to explore Portugal only, there are a few tours that focus on the country only however the majority of Portugal tours will also visit Spain, and sometimes Morocco. Portugal is also a popular port of call for small ship cruises to Europe.

Who will enjoy traveling in Portugal?

Portugal is great for travelers who are interested in a less visited European country. With its Mediterranean vibes combined with ancient history Portugal presents a unique travel opportunity while still remaining within the realms of comfortable travel.

For those who might be looking to stretch their comfort zone, you could consider a tour that also visits Portugal’s nearby neighbor, Morocco - a country with whom it shares much history.

Wine lovers as well should definitely consider a trip to Portugal, where the wine regions are still rugged and salt of the earth. You’ll encounter many different kinds of wine, but the major draw in portugal is the Port.

What is the weather like in Portugal?

Portugal is a small country, half of which is bordered with North Atlantic sea coastline to the west and south. The climate is largely Mediterranean and you can expect several microclimates throughout your journey. So definitely bring layers no matter what time of year you choose to tour Portugal.

The weather in Portugal is fairly mild, with the warmest months in the summer reaching around 80 degrees F, and the coolest months in the winter reaching the low 60s, with light to moderate rainfall.

What is the best time to visit Portugal?

While Portugal is a welcoming country for tourists pretty much year round, there are some things to keep in mind when planning your visit. Summertime is the peak season, and you can expect much higher crowds and prices while traveling around the country.

In June, there are major festivals held in Lisbon and Porto. Though they have religious roots, the festivals can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a good time with lots of live music and delicious traditional foods. If meeting locals, visiting small towns, and getting an authentic sense of local community, you should definitely try and attend the June festivals in Portugal.

What to wear in Portugal

Fashion in Portugal is causal - you’ll fit in just fine with jeans pretty much anywhere. Pack comfortable walking shoes or sandals. Most cities in Portugal are set up for walking - though they aren’t always flat! The 25 de Abril Bridge is not the only similarity Portugal has to San Francisco - you will experience some hills while walking around.

Sun hats, sunglasses, and light breathable clothing is recommended for the summertime. In winter, you will probably experience some rain so be sure to pack a waterproof jacket.

Even though the weather is toasty in summertime, be sure to bring a pair of long pants and shoulder covering scarf or top for when you visit churches and cathedrals.

Show Full Itinerary

Welcome to Portugal! Your trip starts today with your arrival in Lisbon, Portugal’s joyful capital city. You will be picked up from the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel. In the evening, meet your tour leader and fellow travelling companions for a 6pm welcome meeting, where you will be given a briefing of what lies ahead on the tour. If you arrive with time to spare, perhaps head to one of many outdoor cafes to soak up the city’s energy. After your meeting, join your leader and small group for a welcome dinner at one of Lisbon’s magnificent restaurants. Going out to eat is one of Portugal’s great pleasures, and this evening your leader will introduce you to traditional Portuguese recipes and a local culinary scene that’s exploding with regional flavour.

Lisbon is one of Europe’s great cities, famed for beautifully renovated buildings, grand boulevards and impressive castles and churches. Join a local guide for a walking tour through the city. First, take a ride on the historic Gloria cable car – this bright yellow funicular is one of Lisbon’s most photographed images. Then explore the trendy neighbourhood of Bairro Alto, the popular Chiado area and the narrow, cobbled streets of Alfama, dotted with hole-in-the-wall eateries and charming old homes. Pop into a local establishment to try a pastel de nata, a sweet and delicious custard tart and Portugal’s most famous pastry. Visit one of the most symbolic buildings in the city, Lisbon Cathedral. Hear how the cathedral was built on the site of an old mosque in 1150 by Lisbon’s first bishop, Gilbert of Hastings. It wouldn’t be a tour of Lisbon without stopping off to sample some ginjinha, Portugal’s iconic cherry liqueur. Finally, say goodbye to your local guide, then your leader will take you to the fantastic medieval citadel of Sao Jorge Castle and share stories of its history. Although much of the original castle has been destroyed, some sections of walls and 18 different towers remain today. Look down on a city swarming with endless angular white houses and buildings with distinct red terracotta rooftops. The afternoon is free to make further discoveries of Lisbon – perhaps roam through the delightful streets of distinct local neighbourhoods, visit Belem Tower, or the spectacular Monastery of the Jeronimos.

Head outside of the city for a full-day excursion from Lisbon. First drive to cosmopolitan town of Cascais (approximately 2 hours). Once a quiet fishing village, later Cascais became a residence of the Portuguese royal court in the 19th century and is now a glamorous holiday destination. Take some time to explore the fabulous little restaurants and try some local delicacies. Continue to Cabo da Roca (approximately 1 hour), a cape which forms the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe. Then on to Sintra, a bewitching place set amidst lush vegetation and rugged, mystical hills. Your leader will explain how the cooler climate made Sintra a summer retreat for royalty, and why it has drawn and inspired many poets, writers and travellers for centuries, including Lord Byron. Spend some time exploring Sintra’s colourful Pena Palace before making the journey to Coimbra with a late arrival (approximately 2.5 hours).

Sitting dignified on the banks of the River Mondego, Coimbra was once the medieval capital of the county, and its royal heritage can be felt in its ancient streets and buildings. Get to know the city as your leader guides you through the lanes and squares of the Old Quarter. The real star of the show is Coimbra’s prestigious university – one of the oldest in the world. This evening, immerse yourself in Portugal’s cultural heritage by heading to an included traditional Fado music show. Portugal’s version of the blues is hauntingly beautiful and hearing it performed live is an experience to remember. Your leader can recommend some superb spots to eat after the show.

Travel this morning from Coimbra to the Douro Valley. Famous not only for its sublime scenery, the Douro Valley is known for producing some of the world’s most wonderful wine. Today you will have the chance to find out why as you head out for a tasting tour at one of the region’s best wineries. You can’t spell Portugal without Port, and to taste this iconic fortified wine is to taste thousands of years of Portuguese history. Learn the story of its origins and the history of wine production in the area while discovering which locally produced vino is your tipple of choice. Sit down to a light picnic lunch of rustic regional specialities prepared with fresh local ingredients (and paired with more wine, of course!). Enjoy a gentle boat ride on the Douro River, stopping by the lovely little riverside village of Pinhao, then continue on to your Feature Stay accommodation, tucked away between the rolling hills and terraced vineyards of the spectacular Douro Valley, boasting unbeatable views of the Douro River. On arrival, you may like to make the most of your hotel's scenic outdoor pools, or perhaps grab a meal on the terrace and soak in the scenery.

Make your way to Porto, a romantic city on the banks of the Douro River. On arrival, join your leader for an orientation walk of the city’s collection of twisting alleys, crisscrossing staircases and baroque churches. Pass majestic bridges, explore the riverside district’s cobbled streets, merchants’ houses and cafes. In the evening, head to the nearby city of Vila Nova de Gaia to end the day with some sunset drinks.

Take the local train to the seaside city of Matosinhos where you’ll have some time to relax on the beach, dine at the fresh seafood restaurants or stroll along the promenade. Return to Porto and enjoy a free afternoon. Perhaps head to one of the city’s riverfront cafes for a coffee and pastry overlooking the colourful rows of old houses, or take a walk around the World Heritage listed Ribeira district. Regroup in the evening for a final dinner at one of Porto’s excellent local restaurants.

There are no activities planned for today, and as such, you are free to leave at any time. If you wish to spend some more time exploring Porto, we will be happy to arrange additional accommodation for you (subject to availability).
