Somerset Delights: Exploring the Charms of England’s Verdant Gem

somerset travel aa

Somerset is a county steeped in history, natural beauty, and quaint rural charm. With its rolling hills, picturesque villages, and a coastline that stretches for miles, Somerset offers a diverse range of experiences for travelers and locals alike. In this blog post, we’ll take you on a virtual journey through some of the most enchanting aspects of this delightful county.

Historic Landmarks

Somerset is a treasure trove of historical landmarks, each with its own unique story to tell. The city of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its elegant Georgian architecture and the Roman Baths. Glastonbury Abbey, steeped in Arthurian legend, and Wells Cathedral, with its awe-inspiring architecture, are must-visit destinations that transport you back in time.

Natural Wonders

The countryside of Somerset is a patchwork of lush meadows, orchards, and charming villages. The Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offers stunning vistas and miles of walking trails. For a taste of the wild, Exmoor National Park beckons with its rugged moorland and dramatic coastline, providing ample opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting, and stargazing.

Cheddar Gorge: A Natural Wonder in the Heart of Somerset

somerset travel aa

Nestled in the heart of Somerset, Cheddar Gorge stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature. Carved over millennia by the relentless force of water, this dramatic limestone gorge is a geological wonder that offers visitors a breathtaking journey through time.

A Geological Marvel

Cheddar Gorge is a sight to behold, with towering limestone cliffs that rise dramatically from the valley floor. As you walk along the gorge, you’ll be struck by the sheer scale and intricate formations that have been sculpted by water and time. It’s a living testament to the Earth’s ancient history, and a reminder of the remarkable processes that have shaped our planet.

The Cheddar Man Connection

One of the most fascinating aspects of Cheddar Gorge is its connection to prehistory. In 1903, the remains of a human known as Cheddar Man were discovered in the caves within the gorge. Carbon dating revealed that Cheddar Man lived around 10,000 years ago, making him one of the oldest complete human skeletons found in Britain. His story provides a glimpse into the lives of our ancient ancestors and their connection to this remarkable landscape.

Wells, Somerset: Where History Meets Timeless Beauty

somerset travel aa

Nestled in the heart of Somerset lies the enchanting town of Wells, a place where history breathes through cobbled streets and architectural wonders. With its stunning cathedral, medieval architecture, and serene gardens, Wells is a hidden gem that promises a journey through time.

The Jewel of the Mendips: Wells Cathedral

At the heart of this town stands the magnificent Wells Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece that dates back to the 12th century. Its awe-inspiring facade, adorned with intricate carvings and majestic towers, is a testament to the skill and artistry of medieval craftsmen. Step inside and be transported to a sacred space where the light filters through centuries-old stained glass, illuminating the hallowed aisles. Glastonbury Tor: A Beacon of Mystery and Legend in Somerset

somerset travel aa

Nestled in the heart of Somerset’s picturesque countryside, the Glastonbury Tor stands as a beacon of history, spirituality, and natural beauty. This ancient hill rises dramatically from the flatlands, offering sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a place steeped in legend, where history and mythology intertwine to create a truly enchanting destination.

A Tapestry of Legends

Glastonbury Tor is no stranger to myth and legend. Some believe it to be the mythical Avalon of Arthurian legend, a place where the wounded King Arthur was taken after the Battle of Camlann. Others associate it with the fabled Isle of Glass, a realm of enchantment and magic.

The Mystical St. Michael’s Tower

At its summit stands the enigmatic St. Michael’s Tower, a medieval structure that has weathered the centuries. This lone remnant of what was once a larger church adds an air of mystery to the site. Many visitors climb the Tor to reach the tower, captivated by the sense of connection with centuries past.

A Spiritual Pilgrimage

For centuries, Glastonbury Tor has drawn pilgrims and spiritual seekers from around the world. Its confluence of ley lines, believed to be channels of spiritual energy, has earned it a reputation as one …

Christmas travel warning for Somerset motorists as millions set to hit roads

The AA has issued an Amber Traffic Warning ahead of the busy festive period

  • 04:00, 11 DEC 2023
  • Updated 08:08, 11 DEC 2023

One lane is closed and there is queueing traffic for four miles due to a crash on M6 Northbound between J12 A5 (Gailey) and J13 A449 (Stafford South) this evening

Somerset drivers have been hit with a travel warning ahead of the Christmas rush. The AA has issued an Amber Traffic Warning for Friday, December 22 with 16.1 million car journeys expected to be made across the nation.

The experts also expect over 16 million journeys to be made on Saturday, December 23, with another warning in place for this day. The AA surveyed 12,197 members to show the likely driving habits of motorists this festive period.

The statistics show that around 23 per cent of people will use their car for Christmas shopping on December 23. However, this will increase to 30 per cent on Christmas Eve as shoppers head to the High Streets and retail outlets.

The AA also expects a spike in evening traffic on Friday, December 15 as schools break-up for Christmas. The roads are set to be most congested between 4pm and 7pm.

Meanwhile, around 25 per cent of people plan to commute to and from work on Monday, December 18. However, this will drop to 19 per cent on Friday, December 22 as people take advantage of flexible working and work from home.

Between this date and New Year, commuter traffic is expected to remain low. It will then return to normal on Tuesday, January 2.

Like most years, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day will be the main days for celebrating. The AA expects an average of 14 million car journeys on each of these day - although they tend to be short and local trips.

Finally, Monday, January 1 is expected to be one of the quietest days on the roads. Only 16 per cent of people said they plan on making a trip on this day.

Edmund King, AA president, said: “Our five-star patrols will be supporting our members right across the holidays, but it’s still very important to check your vehicle before you set off. Tyres (including the spare, if you have one), fuel, EV range, oil levels, coolant and screen wash checks should be made as a minimum. Likewise keeping water, high protein food or chocolate, warm clothes, coats and a hi-viz jacket will help keep you going should the worst happen.

“While Friday 22 December and Saturday 23 December look set to be the busiest travelling days, the unsettled weather forecast could lead to additional delays so drivers should drive to the conditions and slow down where necessary. You can also plan your journey, including breaks, in advance using the AA Route Planner. If you do plan to use the rail network, keep updated by checking train company websites and radio travel alerts.

“Our Which? recommended expert patrols will be working throughout the holidays to help fix cars that suffer, while assisting drivers, regardless of their insurer, should they be involved in a crash. As well as providing up-to-the-minute traffic information, our free app allows people to book and track a patrol, a bit like the Santa Tracker children use on Christmas Eve. Using the free what3words app can help to pinpoint your exact location which can help our patrols to get to you faster – useful if you need to get the Christmas meal home in a rush.

“New Year’s Day will be the quietest day on the roads which is probably a good thing especially if drivers have been partying the previous evening. Drivers can still be breathalysed and lose their licence for driving over the limit the morning after. So, remember if you are going to drive, don’t drink, and if you are going to drink, don’t drive.”

With May Approaching, Pump Prices Stick to the Slow Lane

By: andrew gross.

Andrew Gross 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2024)—With domestic gasoline demand decidedly in the doldrums and the cost of oil retreating, the national average dipped two cents since last week to $3.65.

“Domestic gas demand is pretty pokey at the moment, which is often the case in the runup to Memorial Day and the traditional start of summer driving season,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “The recent national average price of  $3.67 could be the peak until hurricane season is well underway. But as always, the wildcard will be the cost of oil, so stay tuned.”

For the complete report, including the latest EIA data and oil market dynamics, please visit:  https://gasprices.aaa.com/with-may-approaching-pump-prices-stick-to-the-slow-lane/

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
