Puskas Arena

Puskas Arena

Hungary’s brand new national arena replacing the iconic stadium named after the same legendary Hungarian football player.

Club: none | Opening: 2019 | Capacity: 67,155 seats

History & description

The Puskás Arená is the recently opened new national station of Hungaru that replaced the old Puskas Ferenc Stadion , which had been the home of the Hungary national team since 1953.

First plans for a new stadium were made in the mid 2000s when Hungary bid to organise the  Euro 2012  Championships. Even though the bid ultimately failed, the Hungarian government kept developing plans to build a new modern stadium, though it took until 2012 for the first concrete plans to be presented.

Still, little progress was made until Budapest was selected as one of the host cities of the Euro 2020  Championships in 2014, which was done on the premise of a new stadium.

Plans were made for the construction of an entirely new 68,000 all-seater, more than in previous plans. The plans meant that the old Ferenc Puskas Stadion would have to get demolished.

It took two more years for works to finally start, but by early 2017 the entire old stadium had been demolished.

The Puskas Arena officially opened on 15 November 2019 with a friendly match between Hungary and Uruguay (1-2). It came at a cost of 415 mln euro.

The stadium will be one of the playing venues of the 2020 European Championships, hosting 3 first stage group matches and one round of 16 match.

The Puskas Arena has been selected to host the 2022 Europa League final.

How to get to the Puskas Arena

The Puskas Arena is located just east of central Budapest at only a kilometer from Budepest Keleti central railway station (or 10 minutes walking). The city’s historic centre is about two kilometres further west.

The stadium is easily reached with  metro  line 2, which runs from the historic centre in eastern direction. Take the metro at, for example, Kossuth Lajos, Deak Ferenc, Astoria, or Keleti in the direction of Ors Vezer. Get off at stop Puskas Ferenc Stadion.

Puskás Arena: Hungary

Mention the name Puskás to most football fans and they will soon wax lyrical about the former Hungarian forward who most people consider to be one of the best players of all time. He sits up there with the likes of Pelé and Lionel Messi as being a true great of the game. He had already been honoured by Hungarian football thanks to the fact that the former ground of the national team had been named in his honour as the Ferenc Puskás Stadium. That was demolish in 2016 to make way for this new ground, however.

The new stadium was built over two years between 2017 and 2019 with the specific aim of being one of the venues used for the 2020 European Championship, which is to be held across numerous countries in Europe. It’s the home of the Hungarian national team, which has been playing competitive games since talking part in the 1912 Summer Olympics. A team that has always commanded respect, they’ve finished as runners-up in two World Cups and third in a European Championship.

Puskás Arena Seating Plan and Where to Sit

stadium tour puskas arena

The stadium is, as most modern stadia are, built in a bowl style. There are two tiers, with the seating being continuous right the way around the structure.

Hungary Ticket Prices

Ticket prices for international games are often set according to the competition that the match is part of. Friendlies will obviously command less of a fee than European Cup matches, for example, and World Cup matches will often be more expensive than them.

How To Get Hungary Tickets

When international tournaments roll around the first place to look for tickets is with the event organiser and then the national side’s Football Association. It’s sometimes possible to get tickets directly from the venue, but that should be your last port of call.

Getting To Puskás Arena

Train – It will take you around 24 hours to travel from London to Budapest if you’re hoping to go by train. The best route involves the Eurostar to Paris, a high-speed train to Munich and then a sleeper through to you destination.

Once you’re in the city, however, you can get trolleybus 75 to the ground as well as the metro. If you’re opting for the latter then look out for the M2 line and get off at the . Puskás Aréna stop.

Bus – There are dozens of bus routes that will take you to the ground, so simply ask at the tourist information for the right one according to where you are located.

Car – Kerepesi út and Hungaria krt are the two main roads that run closest to the stadium and, of course, it is well sign-posted the closer that you get. If all else fails, use a sat-nav or your phone’s map function.

By Air – There are actually four airports that serve Hungary’s commercial interests, with Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport being the one that you’ll be flying into for a match in the capital. It’s about ten miles or so from the centre of the city and buses run every ten minutes to transport you to where you need to go.

Taxi – Getting a taxi from the middle of Budapest out to the stadium will set you back around 2.149 Ft, taking about fifteen minutes to complete its journey.

Parking Near Puskás Arena

The parking closest to the ground is for special guests and player coaches etc., so you’d be best off parking in the city centre and making your way out to the ground from there.

As one of the newest stadiums in the world, not just Hungary, at the time of writing, it’s far to say that the stadiums facilities are amongst the best you’ll find in any ground.

Hospitality

stadium tour puskas arena

The ground has been built to meet UEFA and FIFA’s requirements for a modern stadium, which includes plenty of top-class hospitality areas.

Private Hire

At the time of writing there’s no information about the stadium’s private hire options, but it’s reasonably safe to assume that it will be possible to hire it given that most stadium owners like to earn some extra money by allowing for this.

At the moment we have no information about stadium tours, but if that changes we’ll update this section.

About Hungary

stadium tour puskas arena

Even during the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire the two nations had their own football teams. Hungary’s first proper foray into the world of competitive football came in 1912 when the national side took part in that year’s Summer Olympics. That they lost 7-0 to England might well have caused headlines, but the Hungarian team had had to ask for donations to even be able to attend the competition, so they weren’t too ashamed. They soon made up for it, playing friendlies against Russia after the tournament that they won 9-0 and 12-0. Their first appearance in a World Cup came in 1934 when Italy hosted.

Hungary has achieved a degree of success over the years, not the least of which was the country’s three Summer Olympic gold medals. The first of these came in 1952, with the other two being won in 1964 and 1968. The 1952 win was thanks in no small part to the skill and ability of Ferenc Puskás, who helped to revolutionise the game of football at the time. In fact, between May 1950 and February 1956 the side only lost in the World Cup final in 1954, winning 43 games and drawing 6. It’s a different side altogether now, of course, but the Hungary of old was a phenomenal team.

Puskás Arena History

stadium tour puskas arena

As with all such new stadia, the history of the Puskás Aréna is still to be written. Even so, there’s still a fair amount that we can tell you about it. When the idea of building a new stadium was first mooted in 2011 the budget was declared as being 35 billion Hungarian forints. By 2014 that had risen to around 100 billion Hungarian forints. Later that year the plan for the new stadium was presented by György Skardelli, the Hungarian architect who had also built the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena that was located nearby. By the time that 2017 rolled around the budget had almost doubled again, being declared as 190 billion Hungarian forints. That made it more expensive than the likes of the Emirates Stadium in London and Munich’s Allianz Arena.

In April of 2019 it was announced that Hungary Budapest Exiles RFC would call the stadium their home for the 2019-2020 season. It is designed to be a multi-purpose venue, adding the ability to hold conferences and concerts to the footballing nature of the venue. The most exciting thing about the new ground was always going to be the fact that it is one of the stadiums being used for the 2020 European Championship, though in 2018 Balázs Fürjes said that he hoped it would be used for the Champions League final in 2021.

Future Developments

stadium tour puskas arena

It goes without saying that there are no plans for future developments of the stadium at the time of writing. Obviously it is one of the newest and most state-of-the-art venues in world football, so it’s unlikely to have any major alterations done to it for the foreseeable future.

Stadium Guide: Puskas Arena

Sam Straw

After September’s UEFA Super Cup, we’ve taken an in-depth look at the Puskas Arena.

Location: Budapest, Hungary Team: N/A Built: 2019 Capacity: 67,215

Built on the site of the old 100,000-capacity stadium of the same name, the new Puskas Arena hosted the 2020 UEFA Super Cup Final between Bayern Munich and Sevilla in September.

Originally scheduled to be held on August 12 at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto, Portugal, this year’s final was moved due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It turned out to be a landmark occasion for the sport, as 15,180 fans were allowed into the stadium, making it the first major European match to allow fans since the coronavirus pandemic forced the game into lockdown.

Lit up…The stunning view from outside

Situated in Zuglo, the 14 th district of Budapest, the stadium was named in honour of the legendary former national team captain Ferenc Puskas. He scored 84 goals in just 85 international matches for his country.

The 67,215-seater stadium is down to host four matches of UEFA Euro 2020 next year, as well as the 2023 UEFA Europa League Final. The Hungarian Football Federation are expecting the stadium to be awarded a five-star rating, which would be a considerable boost ahead of the landmark occasions.

Extra stadium info – Puskás Aréna

The construction of the stadium started in 2017. It opened with a football match between Hungary and Uruguay. 65,000 people attended the game, which was won by the South American visitors. The national football team of Hungary played their first-ever FIFA World Cup final in 1938. They lost the game, which took place in the French city of Paris. On 12 November 2020, Hungary faced Iceland in their third match at the Puskás Aréna. The game ended in a victory for the Hungarians.

Ferenc Puskás

The Puskás Aréna is named after the Hungarian football legend Ferenc Puskás. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time. Ferenc Puskás scored once for the national football team of Hungary in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final. The Hungarians lost the final. Ferenc Puskás won European championship titles with the Spanish football giants Real Madrid. He also won the first-ever edition of the Intercontinental Cup, the former world championship for football clubs. Ferenc Puskás won the title after beating Peñarol from Uruguay with Real Madrid. Puskás Aréna – stadium description

Plans of changes to the national stadium of Hungary were surfacing already before the end of the 20th century, when Hungary first fought to host the UEFA Euro. Eventually the country ended up launching three successive bids (2004-2012), none of them successful. Each time redevelopment of the Puskás Stadium was envisioned. By 2012 we've counted no less than 6 different visions, some of which saw the stadium revamped, others would see a national football stadium built just east of the historical bowl.

Eventually, in 2012 it was decided that the 1953 structure would be partly retained. Specifically, the western 'pylons', monolithic stairacse and support structures. Over time these became the old stadium's most distinctive element thanks to decorative, perforated facades. Within the old bowl a brand new football-specific stadium was to be built. The concept was drawn by renowned Hungarian architect György Skardelli.

The plans were maturing over time and grew to what was almost unseen worldwide. Even though capacity was set to stay roughly within the margin from old Puskás' all-seater days, the stadium's floor space would significantly outgrow even giants like Wembley. The plan included a hotel with 150-180 rooms, sports facilities for 20 disciplines and on top of all that (literally) a running track around the auditorium with panoramic view of Budapest.

Such immense plan did not entirely survive the financial reality. To give an idea of how much the project was inflated, when talks of a smaller new national stadium were preliminary, it was expected to cost HUF 35 billion. By the time this final design was approved in 2013, it was expected to consume 60-80 billion. A year later it was already 90-100 billion and in 2015 decision to make major cuts was made. In total up to 70,000 m 2 of floor space was cut, including the hotel, running track and numerous other amenities.

And even with this attempt at optimisation the stadium boasts 208,000 m 2 of floor space, with a footprint of just over 60,000 m 2 . This represents a total of 7 floors housing administrative, office and hospitality areas, as well as 11 changing rooms for athletes. With this scale in mind it comes as little surprise that the final budget grew anyway. Once contractors were selected in early 2017, the budget exceeded HUF 180 billion.

While staying within budget estimations proved impossible, the architectural vision stayed on track from 2014 and remained consistent. The stadium stayed at the 51 meters projected and despite length of 316 meters it remains respectful to the site it occupies. As with the previous stadium, the monolithic pylons became the main feature both aesthetically and structurally. While the original pylons were beyond saving, new ones mimic them with great care. The stadium also corresponds with László Papp Arena. The indoor venue is clad with aluminum and kept in natural colours, so is the stadium, veiled with 19,500 m 2 steel mesh.

The only literally preserved element of the old stadium is the eastern tower, which was kept with museum in mind. But we intentionally used the phrase 'literally preserved' because the old stadium was actually used as construction material. As much as 50,000 m 3 of old concrete was reused, while significant portion of the 170,000 m 3 of landfill removed from old stands still sits within the new stadium. Finally, the stadium retained its Puskás name, which isn't all too common in the era of naming rights, while locals also pride with the stadium being designed and delivered entirely by domestic companies.

Planning was a lengthy process but once construction eventually began in 2017, it went nearly flawlessly, seeing the stadium delivered in well under 3 years. Not insignificant for a project of that scale: 120,000 m 3 of concrete, 12,000 tons of structural steel (10,000 of which constitute the roof with a massive surface of 57,000 m 2 ). The process included nearly 1,600 piles being installed and while much of the structure was prefabricated, 38 monolithic pylons remain at the heart of the stadium. You may admire 30 of them pretruding through the metallic mesh and giving the stadium its rhythm, others are hidden inside.

The auditorium holds over 67,000 people, which makes it the largest stadium in its part of Europe, faithful to the old Puskás scale. Three tiers are similar in terms of height, starting with 28 rows in the bottom, 22 rows in the middle and 25 rows on top. Behind regular seating of the middle tier 84 boxes are located, holding 12-60 people each.

On June 8, 2010, voters in Santa Clara approved Measure J, allowing Santa Clara to lease the land previously being used as an overflow parking lot by the Great America theme park. This allowed the 49ers Stadium Authority to begin plans to construct Levi's Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers. Funds for the project were secured on December 13, 2011 and construction began in April of 2012.

Santa Clara was chosen after plans to build a new stadium at Candlestick Point, an effort to replace the aging and outdated Candlestick Park, failed when the 49ers and the city of San Francisco could not come to an agreement on the new stadium's location. The 49ers offices and training facility have been located in Santa Clara since 1987, so that was the logical next choice.

Tip: August through October can be very warm. Dress accordingly, use sunscreen, and make sure you drink plenty of water.

Levi's Stadium and the San Francisco Bay Area were chosen as the host stadium and city for Super Bowl 50, which took place on February 7, 2016.

The deal is worth $220 million, making Levi Strauss & Co. a corporate sponsor of the 49ers. At the time, the $11 million per season deal was the second largest among current NFL naming rights agreements.

Over 180 different food items are served at Levi's Stadium, with 17 types of quick-service concepts that are named for exactly what they're selling. They include Franks (nitrate-free, with a vegan option), Burgers (with American Kobe beef and vegan burgers), Curry (Indian-style, with spiced naan, cassava chips, and varieties like Rajisthani lamb and vegan navy bean and kale), Tortas, Soft Serve, Barbecue (pulled pork or pulled jackfruit), Panini and Steamed Buns (Asian-style bao in Peking duck, pork belly, and vegan portobello varieties).

There are also kid's meals at meny stands with choices like pizza, hot dogs, and chicken tenders. Vegans and vegetarians also have plenty of options available.

On the upper concourse, there is a Mondo Burrito, a tap room with 42 different draft beers, and many places have wine available. There is also Michael Mina's Bourbon Steak & Pub, a high-end steakhouse with a casual pub that is also open on non-game days.

Of course, if you are a member of the press, you are provided three meals on game days within the Verizon Press Level.

Tip: While the Levi's Stadium store offers a larger selection than the official online store, much of the inventory is available there. If you see something that you like at the Levi's Stadium store, check for it online. You will likely find it cheaper and it will be delivered to your home.

49ers Museum

Levi's Stadium is home to a 20,000 square-foot interactive museum that highlights the San Francisco 49ers' rich history in the Bay Area and consists of 11 gallery and exhibit spaces. You can stop by the Morabito Theater to watch the history of the 49ers on a 50-by-18 foot Sony 4k screen. The Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame houses life size statues of the 49ers' enshrined in Canton, Ohio. You can even see a re-creation of legendary 49ers head coach Bill Walsh's first office located in Redwood City.

There is a learning center for younger fans and interactive features on the bottom level of the museum. For example, you can practice your field goal skills by kicking through a virtual field goal, practice your endzone dance, learn to cheer with the Gold Rush cheerleaders, try your hand at broadcasting, and try on a 49ers uniform.

There is a fee to enter the museum.

There is stadium wide Wi-Fi available for all fans. You can use it to access statistics, replays and more via the stadium's official app .

You can also place an order for food from your seat and either pick it up or have it delivered to you for a small fee. The options available for in-seat delivery are limited. You place an order and pay on your mobile device, an estimate for the delivery time is given, a code is made available on your device, and you show that code to the person that delivers your order.

Tip: Allow more time than the given estimate for your order to be delivered. The estimate can be lower than the actual delivery time.

You also have access to mobile ticketing, access turn-by-turn directions throughout the stadium, and view wait times for concession stands and restrooms. It is estimated that, while within the stadium, fans are never more than 10 feet away from a Wi-Fi signal.

Data speeds within the stadium during game time average about 60 Mbps for both download and upload.

Tip: It is important to note that some phone carriers may be able to beat those speeds in the area of the stadium. For example, T-Mobile gets around 80 Mbps download in the area. Game time speeds will vary.

Solar Power

Levi's Stadium features 49 solar arrays provided by NRG Energy on the roof of the facility to form the NRG Solar Terrance. It also features NRG Solar Bridges that fans cross to access the stadium. These all consist of over 1,150 solar panels. They gather enough energy to power the stadium for every San Francisco 49ers home game.

There are 10 clubs located within Levi's Stadium, with the largest being the United Club located on the 300 level of the Suite Tower. It runs the entire length of the field.

Tip: While the inner concourse is often crowded during games, the outer concourse is not. If needed, walk there to get around the stadium.
