Calling all fans….

star trek concert uk

Hi fellow Trek fans

We have some exciting news to share with you all!

In 2023 there will be two new Star Trek conventions held in both England and Germany for fans by fans and these events will take conventions to the next level.

We have put together a team of active fans and organisers to run these events which will build on what has been learned from the last 10 years of official Star Trek events worldwide and will be bringing you more of the fun and excitement you love from within Star Trek fandom.

Since these will be unofficial they will be less restrictive as to what can take place at these events. We can bring you more fun activities with the cast of the Trek shows you love and you will be able to get closer to the guests and really get to know them like conventions of old that were held at hotels.

Hotel events are the best events, you get to all hang out together, have full on parties until late, and for that weekend we are all a family with many of the guests also staying at the hotel which makes so special.

These new events will go by the name Destination Trek and they will be the biggest Star Trek events held in the world. You will have all the guests that you would expect to meet and all the good things you have come to expect to take part in at a Star Trek event, but with no licence fees this will all be a bit cheaper on your pockets.

CBS the owners of Star Trek seem to have lost interest in official Star Trek events for fans since they have become part of the bigger corporation of Paramount +. As such the Creation official Star Trek event in Las Vegas had already lost its rights to be official, and the Reed official event set to take place in the US in 2023 has also now been cancelled, as well as the largest Star Trek convention in the world Destination Star Trek London 2022 was cancelled by the instructions of CBS. So now there is no endorsed or official events being held anywhere in the world and Paramount + do not seem to have any interest in anyone running any official events in the near future.

The DST events were held at big conference centres because that is what CBS wanted, but these new events will be going back to where fandom first started to meet. Star Trek fandom ran the first Star Trek events in the 1970’s in hotels and Gene Roddenberry was fully behind it. It’s what helped to keep Star Trek alive. So in the spirit of those first events it’s up to the fans once again to come together to keep Star Trek fan events alive now that CBS/Paramount + have lost interest in running official events for us fans.

The date for the first Destination Trek UK is 18-20 August 2023 and Destination Trek Germany will be announced very soon so that fans throughout Europe can meet up and enjoy an incredible weekend together like we have for the past 20+ years.

Star Trek is a part of all our lives and we are all fans that love Star Trek and want to hang out and have fun with fellow fans. These events should never be allowed to die out. It’s up to us fans to keep these events going and Destination will be the next giant leap for fan kind starting in 2023.

Live long and prosper.

Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage concert coming to London

Star Trek is embarking on a tour of symphony halls in more than 100 cities worldwide, with the first performance taking place in London this November. Famous music from TV, movies and video games will be accompanied by footage projected on 40-foot wide screens.

Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage will include music from each TV series with the exception of

Star Trek: Enterprise , as well as music from several movies including Wrath of Khan , Voyage Home and

Insurrection .

A pre-tour premier will take pace at London's Royal Albert Hall on 1 November 2015 before heading to Florida in January 2016. The show will then tour the USA and Canada before concluding in April. Details of exact dates and ticketing information are yet to be announced. The London date will be the show's only performance outside North America.

Justin Freer, who previously conducted concerts based on The Lord of the Rings , Gladiator and The Godfather , will again lead the Star Trek performance. The concert is being produced as a joint partnership between CineConcerts, CBS and Paramount Pictures.

Freer, who is also producer and founder of CineConcerts, said the performance would feature the best music and visuals from five decades of Star Trek. "The Star Trek franchise has for many years been an important and meaningful part of our culture in so many ways," he added.

Review: STAR TREK IN CONCERT, Royal Albert Hall

pixeltracker

The franchise is now over 50 years old, spawning several TV and film series as well as garnering a collection of avid fans. These two films are from the recent reboot, known as the 'Kelvin timeline', which sees younger versions of the well-known characters launched into an alternate reality when a group of vengeful Romulans accidentally travel back in time through a singularity and change the course of history. Of the original cast, only Leonard Nimoy remains, playing the older Spock (or Spock Prime); 2009's Star Trek was the first in the franchise to completely recast established roles, beginning the story again for a new generation of viewers.

Both screenings were accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by the brilliant Ernst van Tiel, bringing award-winning composer Michael Giacchino's original scores to life below the big screen. Orchestral music might seem incongruous with science fiction, until you think of the long line of films and television programmes in this genre that rely on classical-style music to soundtrack the action - other iconic examples include Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind . Music and sound play a pivotal role in productions like these, whether it's blasting out "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys or heralding the arrival of the USS Enterprise, so screenings of this nature are often more like experiences than simply watching a film.

In a venue such as the Royal Albert Hall , it's comparable to an IMAX viewing thanks to the large screen and the acoustics of the place; it's effectively surround sound, and the volume and energy that come from live performance on musical instruments go right to your core. Hearing the original Star Trek theme (composed by Alexander Courage ) played out with the closing credits was spine-tingling on both occasions.

For Sunday's Star Trek Beyond screening, co-writer and star of the film Simon Pegg came to give a short introduction, arriving onstage to rapturous applause. "This film is very significant to me - not just because I'm in it!", said Pegg. It was a bit of a whirlwind writing period as everything had to be done very quickly and not following the usual process, resulting in "rages of Klingon intensity" as they raced to get it finished during pre-production. Whereas the first two films in the series were directed by J. J. Abrams , his Star Wars commitments meant Justin Lin took over the director's chair for this one, and Pegg said he couldn't speak highly enough about his time working with Lin.

Star Trek Beyond also marked one of the final screen performances of Anton Yelchin (Chekov) before he was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 27. The son of Russian figure skaters, Yelchin and his family relocated to the United States when he was still a baby, where he carved out an acting career from a young age. Pegg talked warmly of Yelchin, describing him as "an extraordinary human being" and usually the most intelligent person in the room, before dedicating Sunday's event to him and his parents (Viktor and Irina). His moments on-screen felt even more poignant following this touching tribute.

Review: STAR TREK IN CONCERT, Royal Albert Hall

A self-confessed Trekkie, Pegg couldn't resist taking a photo of everyone in the audience doing the Vulcan salute, bidding farewell with "Live long and prosper".

The Royal Albert Hall 's Star Trek weekend must go down as a resounding success, buoyed by incredibly enthusiastic audiences and standing ovations on both Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon; for the completists among us, it's a shame that Star Trek Into Darkness wasn't also included on the schedule, though it was previously performed there in 2014. These may have been special screenings, but should there be more in the future I recommend you "boldly go" and experience it for yourself.

The Festival of Science is at the Royal Albert Hall until 10 July

The sensational Avatar: The Last Airbender Live in Concert is returning to London’s Southbank Centre in February. Read our review here.

After a spectacular opening night at London’s Royal Festival Hall , AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Live in Concert is heading back to the UK. We were fortunate enough to attend the opening night, and the performance was absolutely amazing. And now, more fans will get the chance to experience it for themselves when the show returns for one night only on February 10.

The performance was breathtaking and whisked a packed auditorium away on a whimsical journey into the world of Aang and his mastery of the elements. More than just a collection of random tracks, the show allowed us to experience the magic of the beloved animated series like never before. And more importantly, it connected us with the adventures in a whole new way. After all, it is one thing to watch a show – but it’s another to feel a show. To feel the emotion as the characters rise and fall. To experience the heartbreak and euphoria in equal quantities. And all thanks to a sensational live orchestra, an immensely talented choir, and a conductor who knows the material through and through. And on the stage at the Southbank Centre, the show came to life and connected with its fans on a deeper level than we ever thought possible.

AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER LIVE IN CONCERT

LIVE ORCHESTRA

Get ready for an unparalleled musical odyssey as Nickelodeon and GEA Live proudly present: Avatar: The Last Airbender In Concert. Immerse yourself in an over two-hour show with a live orchestra bringing the show’s iconic musical score to life, in perfect harmony with highlights and favorite moments from the series. Taiko and erhu will share the spotlight with violins and clarinets, while the series’ most beloved scenes play out on screen, bringing viewers into the Avatar world to experience the series’ most memorable moments with Aang, Katara, Toph, Sokka, Zuko and more. The creative mastermind behind the show’s original music, Emmy Award-winning composer and musician Jeremy Zuckerman, has poured his heart and exceptional talent into expanding his compositions for the concert series. Through creative collaboration with Jeff Adams (the show’s original editor), this spectacular production not only magnifies the epic scope and high drama of the series, but also marks a thrilling first – the chance to experience the captivating world of Avatar: The Last Airbender through this live orchestra concert.

JEREMY ZUCKERMAN

“From epic action scenes to heartfelt emotional moments, Jeremy’s score was an integral part of Avatar’s storytelling,” said Michael Dante DiMartino, co-creator, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra and co-Chief Creative Officer, Avatar Studios. “To hear his music live with an orchestra will be a truly special experience.” Bryan Konietzko, co-creator, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra and co-Chief Creative Officer, Avatar Studios, added, “Jeremy’s music is one of the most crucial ingredients in Avatar, providing the emotional backbone to the characters’ arcs and capturing the spirit of Aang’s world. We are so excited to celebrate his beautiful and exciting compositions with fans and relive all the iconic moments together through these live performances.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender Live in Concert - The Epic Orchestral Journey Returns To The UK

The soundtrack itself is packed to the brim with stunning soundscapes. From its usage of violins, powerful drum beats, and traditional Asian instruments, the score takes us on a whirlwind cultural journey. As the images unfold on the screen the soundtrack begins to intensify. As does the incredible usage of stage lighting that has been intricately designed to match the tone of the material.

When the sun dips below the horizon, the stage illuminates with warm tones, complementing the soft, peaceful rhythm of the music. The lighting has been intentionally managed and designed for the show, resulting in a noticeable difference. With an obvious American animation style, the show’s soundtrack draws on Asian heritage to create a breathtaking result. The fusion of traditional Asian and contemporary instruments brings to mind the works of Jerry Goldsmith. And one can only applaud Jeremy Zuckerman for his craftsmanship. No effort has been spared to bring this production to a wider audience, and the production team deserves all the recognition that will come their way.

The storylines presented on the screen have been edited and divided into book chapters, making it easier for the audience to keep track of the narrative. These chapter breaks are marked by a sudden fade to black, after which the title of the next chapter appears on the screen. There, the conductor takes control again and guides us on another journey, each presented as beautifully as the last. Until the first half reached its crescendo and left us all gasping for air.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Live in Concert - The Epic Orchestral Journey Returns To The UK

ORCHESTRAL BRILLIANCE

During intermission, everyone in attendance appreciated the crisp animation style, vibrant palette, and cultural relevance of the first half. And as the conductor appeared to start the final chapters, the brilliance of his work came to the forefront. Watching him conduct was captivating. His energy and love for the music were palpable. And he led the ensemble of musicians through each chapter with an expert hand. Aside from their instruments, the musicians frequently used clapping to enhance the action sequences shown on the screen, which is a true testament to the effort put into creating this experience for the masses.

I was amazed by the range of talented vocalists, some of whom held notes beyond what I considered possible. Watching them prepare to hit those notes was an experience in itself. As was watching the orchestra use every resource at their disposal to bring the score to life. One cannot summarize this experience in a single review, this is an adventure that needs to be experienced. To allow yourself to be whisked away on a musical journey into another world. One that we have only just scratched the surface of.

star trek concert uk

AN AIR-BENDING EXPERIENCE

Despite its almost three-hour running time, I feel a strong desire to experience the performance again. I want to immerse myself in its brilliance and bask in the glow of Aang’s world. I want to delve deeper into his Asian heritage and the melodious tones of its many instruments. Perhaps it was Jeremy Zuckerman’s closing remarks that captivated me. His explanation of his inspiration behind the music was beguiling and revealed his true love of the series. And it left the auditorium wanting more. Perhaps his score transported me to Aang’s world and ensnared my desire to learn more. If that was the goal of the performance, it certainly worked for me. I’ll be binge-watching the animated series again this weekend in the faint hope it does the score justice and takes me back to that world.

In the plus column, the show isn’t just aimed at hardcore fans of the series. New fans are in for the indoctrination of a lifetime thanks to the score taking us back to the very beginning. The images on the screens introduce us to Aang’s world and the artistry of “Airbending” and deliver all the insight we could need as we are serenaded by Zuckerman’s blissful soundtrack. The outcome is an ideal way for new enthusiasts to discover and cherish the world of Avatar. It is a world filled with magic, chaos, passion, and sorrow, and it provides an avenue for pure escapism. This alone makes it worth the price of admission.

star trek concert uk

Thankfully, it isn’t just the UK that can look forward to experiencing this show for themselves. Following sold-out dates in London, New York, and San Francisco, the concert series is expanding to a 100-city world tour. First up, the show is returning to London’s Royal Festival Hall on February 10th. Then the show goes global. Per Variety , the show will travel across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific allowing fans from across the world to experience it for themselves.

Beginning in September, the music of the hit Nickelodeon series will travel to cities across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific. The over two-hour concert, produced by GEA Live, brings “Avatar: The Last Airbender’s” iconic musical score to life with an orchestra as fan-favorite moments from the series are shown on screen. Dates and tour details will be announced this spring. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” composer Jeremy Zuckerman has teamed up with show co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko as well as original editor Jeff Adams to expand “Avatar’s” compositions for the world tour.

star trek concert uk

At the time of publication, fans are only able to book for the newly added London date. The Southbank Centre has already opened pre-sale for the venue which you can book here . The worldwide tour doesn’t get underway until much later in the year. Therefore expect dates to be announced during the spring. Keep updated via the official website here .

Until then, get ready to bask in the glorious soundscape of Jeremy Zuckerman’s masterwork. There, you’ll be whisked away to a land where magic and mystery walk hand in hand. Where magical creatures fly and Asian culture comes to beautiful and vibrant life. Where escapism immerses you in a sea of tranquility. And the visual imagery catapults you into the fight of a lifetime. And that is where the real magic awaits us.

If you’ve only ever seen Avatar: The Last Airbender on the small screen, then you’ve never seen it at all.

A world of beauty awaits you…all you need is a ticket.

In remembrance of tj greene.

TJ Greene was an employee and tour guide at the Star Trek Set Tour and a great friend to everyone here.  He will be remembered for his kind and trusting soul and his warm, friendly demeanor. We are devastated by his loss and will keep him close to our hearts.

TJ was not well known in Ticonderoga, he only moved here in January of this year. He made his living as an actor and costumed mascot for Six Flags in Lake George. He was not a full-time professional Elvis impersonator. He did Elvis tribute performances at festivals and for elderly folks and small local venues. His most recent job, and his reason for relocating to Ticonderoga with his wife, was to work as a tour guide at the Star Trek Set Tour. He was not a Captain Kirk impersonator either. Some of these details may have been misconstrued by the press, causing confusion. James Cawley delighted in his shared interests with TJ Greene and will forever treasure his memory! TJ was our friend, fellow tour guide, and brother. He was a caring friend to all, he loved giving tours, and speaking with fans. Keep his family and friends in your prayers.

Biggest star trek happenings in 2024: returning shows, movie updates & more.

Star Trek has a big 2024 planned with three TV series, a new Star Trek movie, podcasts, and numerous conventions to celebrate the franchise.

  • Star Trek fans have a lot to look forward to in 2024, with virtual and in-person conventions, Star Trek Day, podcasts, and new series announcements.
  • Despite uncertainties, the production of Star Trek: Section 31 and Lower Decks Season 5 are progressing smoothly.
  • The final season of Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere in April 2024, marking the end of Captain Burnham's voyages.

Star Trek has a big 2024 on tap, and here are 8 things to look forward to from the final frontier this year. Although the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted Hollywood production and the ability of talent and creatives to promote their work for much of 2023, Star Trek had a phenomenal year. Star Trek: Picard season 3, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, and Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 released a cumulative 30 episodes, were highly acclaimed as some of the most innovative Star Trek in years, and many episodes charted in the Nielsen streaming Top 10. All in all, 2023 was a great year to be a Star Trek fan.

Significant questions loom over Star Trek in 2024, however. Paramount may be up for sale, which would certainly impact Star Trek on Paramount+'s various series and projects. There remains no new Star Trek theatrical movie in development, going on 8 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters in the summer of 2016. And there is no indication that Paramount+ will greenlight Star Trek: Picard 's proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Legacy , in spite of the same type of dedicated fan campaign that helped Star Trek: Prodigy jump to Netflix after it was canceled by Paramount+. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes also delayed production of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which likely won't premiere until 2025. Still, Star Trek has a massive 2024 planned , and here are 8 things for fans to be excited about.

10 Things We Want From Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

8 star trek has amazing podcasts, the 7th rule, the shuttlepod show, inglorious treksperts, the delta flyers, and more.

Star Trek has podcasts to satisfy every type of fan , and they're available to watch on YouTube or stream wherever you get your podcasts. Walter Koenig joins The 7th Rule with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk to discuss his episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series. The Delta Flyers: Through The Wormhole added Terry Farrell and Armin Shimerman, who join Star Trek: Voyager 's Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill to review episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nin e. Inglorious Treksperts hosts Mark A. Altman and Daren Dochterman continue their unrivaled expertise of classic Star Trek with podcasts and live panel shows. Sadly, The Shuttlepod Show 's co-host Dominic Keating has left the podcast, but hosts and producers Connor Trinneer, Erica LaRose, and Mark J. Cartier will continue to dive deep into the lives and careers of their illustrious Star Trek guests. Star Trek fans have a wealth of podcasts to enjoy in 2024, with new episodes weekly.

Walter Koenig Interview: Star Trek The Original Series & The 7th Rule Podcast

7 star trek virtual & in-person conventions, trektalks, virtual trek con 5, the llapy awards, stlv, and more.

Star Trek has a connection to its fans unlike any other in entertainment, and thanks to the various Star Trek conventions, both virtual and in-person, Star Trek fans have the privilege and ability to meet and hear from their favorite talent and creatives. Star Trek essentially pioneered the fan convention and 2024 kicks off with two huge virtual events: TrekTalks 3 , hosted by John Billingsley of Star Trek: Enterprise and Bonnie Gordon of Star Trek: Prodigy, streams live on YouTube on January 13th with a full day of panels featuring over 30 Star Trek guests, all to benefit the Hollywood Food Coalition. TrekTalks 3 will also feature a can't-miss Star Trek: Picard season 3 panel.

Virtual Trek Con 5 , from Cirroc Lofton of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Ryan T. Husk, and The 7th Rule podcast, streams on YouTube from February 15-19 with 4 days of Star Trek panels with numerous special guests. VTC5 is capped off by the 3rd annual LLAPy Awards , the only Star Trek awards show voted on by fans , which streams live on YouTube on Sunday, February 19. For in-person Star Trek cons, two of the biggest are Creation Entertainments ST:SF in San Francisco in March and STLV: Trek to Vegas in Las Vegas in August, both featuring dozens of Star Trek talent. And, with no strikes this year, Star Trek on Paramount+ will no doubt return once again with huge panels at San Diego Comic-Con in July and New York Comic-Con in October.

6 Star Trek Day 2024

Star trek celebrates the franchise in person again.

2023 sadly saw Paramount+'s annual in-person Star Trek Day event canceled because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Since 2021, Star Trek Day has been a celebration of the franchise bringing together talent and creatives from Star Trek on Paramount+'s series and Star Trek 's legacy shows and films. Held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles and streamed on Paramount+ and Star Trek 's social channels, Star Trek Day is expected to return in September 2024, with a likely agenda of honoring the departing Star Trek: Discovery and looking ahead to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 and more.

Screen Rant was on the red carpet for Star Trek Day 2022 .

5 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Announcements

Expect information about the newest star trek series.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was announced by Paramount+ in April 2023, and nothing more is known about the newest upcoming Star Trek series besides the fact that Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau ( Nancy Drew ) are the showrunners, and the writers' room includes Tawny Newsome of Star Trek: Lower Decks . 2024 should finally see more information about Starfleet Academy, which will hopefully announce the actors/characters of the show, and perhaps even confirm that Starfleet Academy is set after Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , as expected.

4 Star Trek: Section 31

Star trek's first made-for-streaming movie..

Announced in April 2023, Star Trek: Section 31 finally begins production from January to March in Toronto for a possible release in late 2024. Section 31 stars Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh , who reprises her Star Trek: Discovery anti-hero, Emperor Michelle Georgiou, and Yeoh used her clout from her Best Actress Oscar to ensure Section 31 is made. Star Trek: Section 31 is directed by Olutande Osunsanmi and written by Craig Sweeny, but nothing else is known about the first Star Trek movie made exclusively to stream on Paramount+ . Section 31 's potential success could lead to the plan for a new Star Trek streaming movie every 2 years to come to fruition. Even if Star Trek: Section 31 doesn't premiere in 2024, fans should at least finally learn what other characters are in the movie and what era of Star Trek Section 31 is set in.

3 Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5

Premieres in 2024 on paramount+..

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 may have been the animated comedy's best season yet, and hopes are high that Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will top it. The SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes didn't affect the production of the animated series, and Star Trek: Lower Decks was able to complete its scripts, with 10 new episodes in production for the show's traditional late summer/early fall release date on Paramount+. Little is known about the stories planned for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 and the newly-minuted junior Lieutenants of the USS Cerritos, except that there will be more exploration of the Orion culture through the eyes of former Lt. D'Vana Tendi (Noel Wells). And while there are fears that season 5 could be the last for Star Trek: Lower Decks, hopefully, the 2023 crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds created more fans of Lower Decks, and creator Mike McMahan's hilarious animated show can continue for years to come.

2 Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - The Final Season

Premieres april 2024 on paramount+..

The only live-action Star Trek series on Paramount+'s 2024 schedule, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season marking the end of the voyages of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery. It was Star Trek: Discovery' s success on CBS All-Access, which became Paramount+, that led to Star Trek 's current TV renaissance. Although Discovery season 5 was not originally planned as the final season, following Paramount+ canceling the series in March 2023, reshoots were completed to turn Discovery 's season 5 finale into a proper ending for the entire series . Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is also a shift in tone to an Indiana Jones -like intergalactic treasure hunt adventure, according to Jonathan Frakes, who directs the penultimate episode of Discovery . Premiering in April 2024, Star Trek: Discovery will be the Star Trek event on Paramount+.

8 Star Trek: Discovery Things To Know Before Season 5

1 star trek: prodigy season 2, premieres in 2024 on netflix.

With a huge global audience discovering the all-ages animated series on Netflix, Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 is possibly the most anticipated Star Trek event of 2024 . Netflix premiered Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 on Christmas Day, priming viewers new and old for 20 all-new Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 episodes from creators and showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman and their team. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 promises to go even bigger than season 1's high stakes, taking Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the young ragtag former crew of the USS Protostar into an alternate 25th-century future and beyond. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2's massive scope will reportedly touch upon the entire Star Trek franchise, and the already-announced new castmember The Doctor (Robert Picardo) as well as the new USS Voyager-A are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the surprises, fun, and adventure Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 has in store.

Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks are streaming on Paramount+. Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix.

The 1 Wild Mistake That Led Patrick Stewart To Accept Star Trek

Y ou likely associate Patrick Stewart with a range of roles, from his countless Shakespearean performances to Capitain Picard in Star Trek .

But it turns out that he only accepted the latter part because of an agent’s sliiiiight miscalculation.

In fact, he thought he’d only be playing the now-iconic part for a few months.

Speaking on  The Late Late Show with James Corden  last year, the veteran star admitted he “didn’t – couldn’t – accept what it was that I’d taken on” with Star Trek.

That’s partly because, when first signing up for the show, his agent told him: “Look, you know you cannot revive an iconic show. You cannot. It’s not going to work.

“So, just come over here. Do a dozen episodes, maybe less, and make some money for the first time in your life and go home’.”

“That was the prediction for me,” he added. “Six months, no more.“

Star Trek: The Next Generation actually  ended up running for seven seasons across as many years. Sir Patrick also played the titular role in 2020′s Star Wars: Picard.

But the stage and screen star said he was hesitant to film that, too.

Remembering being told by his agent about the opportunity to reprise his iconic Star Trek character, he told TIME , “My instant reaction? ‘No, definitely not interested. Sorry.’”

However, after an in-person meetup, a 10-page explainer , and a set of Patrick Styewart’s conditions, the three-season-long show went ahead with the star.

The Star Trek Origins Movie Is Officially Moving Forward, But I Have Two Serious Concerns About It

Am I the only one wondering about these things?

Zachary Quinto's Spock and Chris Pine's Kirk in Star Trek Into Darkness

If you have a Paramount+ subscription , you know full well how the Star Trek franchise has been thriving on TV again for many years now. Streaming has allowed the shows like Discovery , Picard , Strange New Worlds , Prodigy (which is now housed at Netflix) and Lower Decks to be made, and there are more upcoming Star Trek TV shows on the way, as well as the Michelle Yeoh-led Section 31 movie . However, not the franchise’s theatrical film side of things, we haven’t seen anything since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , but apparently that’s about to change. Paramount Pictures is officially moving forward with that Star Trek origins movie that was reported about earlier this year , though after hearing this news, I can’t help but have two serious concerns about it.

During the Paramount presentation at CinemaCon today that CinemaBlend attended, it was mentioned that this Star Trek movie, which will be directed by Andor ’s Toby Haynes and written by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ’s Seth Grahame-Smith, is set to begin production later this year and is expected to be released sometime in 2025. Beyond that, no other details were revealed, so the only other thing we know about this project is that it’s set decades before the events of 2009’s Star Trek , i.e. the movie that kicked off the alternate timeline which follows Chris Pine’s James Kirk, Zachary Quito’s Spock and more.

Therein lies my first concern with this origins movie: exactly how is this going to function as a prequel? Not to get too nerdy, but the point of divergence between the Kelvin timeline and the main Star Trek timeline occurs when Nero’s ship’s came back in time to the former reality, which also happened to be the same day James Kirk was born. Everything before that day happened the same way in both timelines, including the events of the TV show Star Trek: Enterprise . So because that series chronicled Starfleet’s first deep-space exploration and ended with the formation of the United Federation of Planets, what origin is there to tell?

The main thing I can think of at the moment is we’d learn how Starfleet and the United Federation became the powerhouse forces they are by the time the 2009 Star Trek movie begins. But even setting aside the fact that this doesn’t need to be classified as a Kelvin timeline exclusive-story since again, such events would have happened the same way in both realities, would this make for a compelling enough cinematic event? With talent like Haynes and Grahame-Smith behind it, I hope so.

My second concern with this Star Trek origins movie is what this means for Star Trek 4 , i.e. the Star Trek Beyond follow-up. We’re coming up on 10 years of this project trying to get off the ground, with various behind-the-scenes creative talent boarding and exiting it, including director Matt Shakman, who left to helm The Fantastic Four . It seems like Star Trek 4 can’t catch a break, and I’m worried that this origins movie will result in it being shelved for good.

Now to be fair, when this origin story’s existence was revealed, it was mentioned that Star Trek 4 was still in “active development’ and is intended to be “the final chapter of the series.” So on face value, Paramount reportedly intends to give this version of the USS Enterprise crew a proper farewell, but given how many attempts to move Star Trek 4 forward have failed, will prioritizing the Star Trek origins movie will once again result in the other movie falling by the wayside? At this point, if Star Trek 4 does get made, it’s not coming out until well over a decade after Beyond . Is it even worth being remotely optimistic about its chances anymore?

As a longtime Star Trek fan, I’ll end up seeing this origins movie regardless, but these concerns will keep weighing on my mind until more information comes to light. Naturally we’ll pass along any major updates that come in, but for now, you can look through our 2024 movies schedule to stay on top of the cinematic entertaining coming out later this year.

Paramount Plus renews two hit Star Trek series but cancels Lower Decks, the best of them all

Paramount Plus has some good news and some bad news for Star Trek fans...

A still from the animation of Star Trek: Lower Decks

Star Trek: Lower Decks – arguably the best Star Trek series, if its flawless ratings from critics are anything to go by – will make its final voyage later this year. The show will come to a close after its next season, its fifth, which is expected to air later in 2024.

But there's some solace for Star Trek fans, as Stark Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season. If a fifth season is the streaming equivalent of the red uniform that indicates one of the teleported team isn't coming back, that means Star Trek: Strange New Worlds should still be around for at least one more season after that.

The news of Star Trek: Lower Decks' cancellation comes via show creator Mike McMahan and co-producer Alex Kurtzman. In a message shared with the Star Trek website, they wrote: "We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of  Star Trek: Lower Decks . While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true."

Stay tuned for the "hilarious" fifth and final season

According to the duo: "We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we're working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the  Cerritos  crew with a big send-off... We remain hopeful that even beyond season five, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and the whole  Cerritos  crew will live on with new adventures."

Fans of the show will be disappointed. It's been consistently great, with season four currently sitting at an impressive 100% on Rotten Tomatoes – that's higher than even the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has 99%. As Rolling Stone put it: " Next Generation and Deep Space Nine took a while to find themselves, and so did Lower Decks " – the fourth season has "become a highlight of this current phase of TV Trek".

Hopefully it's some consolation that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for another season. It's currently sitting with a 98% rating based on 99% for season one and 97% for season two. CBR says "it's shows like Strange New Worlds that confirm there is plenty of life in the venerable science fiction franchise, giving fans plenty to look forward to every Thursday for the exciting adventures of Captain Pike and his Enterprise", while The Mary Sue says that " Strange New Worlds shows that there’s still plenty of life left in the classic Star Trek format."

All the seasons so far of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are streaming on Paramount Plus.

Coronation Concert: Star-studded line-up announced for Windsor Castle event

The event, to celebrate the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla, will take place on 7 May in the grounds of Windsor Castle in front of an audience of 20,000 members of the public.

Take That, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are among musical acts on the "world class" line-up for the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle, it has been announced.

Take That 's performance will feature three of the original members - Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen.

However Robbie Williams and Jason Orange have been given the opportunity to re-join for a one-off reunion.

The event, hosted by the BBC, will also include performances by Italian opera star, Andrea Bocelli; Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel; singer-songwriter Freya Ridings and classical-soul composer, Alexis Ffrench.

More Coronation Concert acts are expected to be announced soon.

In a joint statement, Barlow, Donald and Owen said they "couldn't wait" for the show, scheduled for Sunday 7 May - the day after the King Charles III and Queen Camilla are officially crowned at Westminster Abbey.

"This will be our first live show since the Odyssey Tour, four years ago in 2019, and what a stage to come back on.

"A huge live band and orchestra, a choir, military drummers, the backdrop of Windsor Castle and the celebration of a new King."

Take That - minus Robbie Williams and Jason Orange - will perform at the Coronation Concert

Meanwhile, Perry said she was "excited" to perform as well as "shine a light further" on The British Asian Trust, a charity founded by the King when he was the Prince of Wales, which works to tackle widespread poverty and hardship in South Asia.

The American singer-songwriter is an ambassador for the charity and has highlighted its work to raise funds to find solutions to child trafficking.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Richie said it was an "honour" to be part of the event.

The King meeting Lionel Richie in 2019

"To share the stage with other performers at the Coronation Concert is a once-in-a-lifetime event and it will be an honour and a celebration," he said.

Bocelli - who has previously had the "great honour" of singing for the late Queen on several occasions - and Sir Bryn will perform a duet of an "iconic song of love and collective solidarity".

Ridings, from north London, will take to the stage with Ffrench, also a producer and pianist.
