Star Trek: Enterprise finally gets its due this year.

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard revealed Captain Jonathan Archer and his Enterprise NX-01 crew's first mission holds a significant milestone in the Federation's history, which is celebrated with Frontier Day . On Pike's Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Uhura and Ortegas gush over the expertise and importance of Hoshi Sato and Travis Mayweather. Not only that, it's the NX-01 itself that helps a pair of wayward time-traveling ensigns return home to their correct timeline. And just this summer, we find an Archer action figure among Boimler's box of his prized possessions when he moves up from the lower decks to his own quarters in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

We can't think of a better time to highlight some of our favorite Captain Archer episodes during its entire Enterprise run.

"Home"

In civilian attire, Archer meets up with Captain Hernandez at a bar as he solemnly looks down reflecting on his missions in 'Home'

On Earth at the Bay Stadium, Captain Archer and his senior crew are celebrated for the Enterprise 's successes in the Delphic Expanse, including saving the planet from the Xindi, in the fourth-season episode, " Home ." The captain tempers the praise by reminding everyone about the 27 crew members who didn't make it home with them; it was their efforts and sacrifice that ensured their safe return.

Uncomfortable with the hero's welcome and fanfare, Archer comes to grips with how much the Expanse has changed him, not just the previous year with the Xindi, but across his tenure on the NX-01, as he reluctantly advises Captain Hernandez and the Columbia 's maiden voyage.

Reflecting on the realities of his duties, grief, and choices he made, he tells Hernandez, " I look at you, and I see the person I was three years ago - the explorer that my father wanted me to be. I lost something out there. And I don't know how to get it back. "

"Similitude"

Archer crouches down besides the sim child of Trip Tucker as they both look over towards Porthos in 'Similitude'

Akin to Captain Janeway's Tuvok dilemma, "Similitude" forces Archer into an ethical quandary — when Commander Trip Tucker is near-fatally wounded, the crew cannot afford to lose their chief engineer during a critical moment. Dr. Phlox proposes an unorthodox solve to their issue at hand. Using one of the larvae in his arsenal, they create a mimetic symbiote aka 'clone' of Trip to harvest its organs to save Trip.

Over the course of the episode, Archer struggles with the ethics of actions, as they witness the "Sim" age from a kid to adult, who develops his own memories and relationships with the crew in addition to possessing the original Trip's experiences and memories. Despite his two-week lifespan, Sim argues for his right to live. In addition to weighing the life of his friend, Archer must consider Earth's overall survival.

"First Flight"

Archer prepares for takeoff in 'First Flight'

Where it all began. "First Flight" takes us back to Archer's early days as a warp-speed test pilot, as well as provides context to his devotion to his father and his friendship with Trip. Here, we get to learn more about their warp program and his father's groundbreaking but flawed warp engine designs. This episode shows how Archer came to be in command of the Enterprise .

"Azati Prime"

A beaten and bloody Archer argues with his Xindi captor in 'Azati Prime'

I'm going to ask all of you to think back to the day when this ship was first launched. We were explorers then. When all this is over, when Earth is safe, I want you to get back to that job. There are four hundred billion stars in our galaxy; we've only explored a tiny fraction. You have a lot of work to do. Of all the captains who will sit in this chair, I can't imagine any of them being more proud than I am right now.

Captain Jonathan Archer, "Azati Prime"

When the Enterprise discovers the Xindi's plans for a super weapon, Archer sets out on a suicide mission in "Azati Prime," believing himself to be on a one-way trip toward enemy territory.

While a time agent shows him that history needs him alive for the United Federation of Planets' formation, Archer is resolved to go through with his mission despite the odds. Held captive by the Xindi Reptilians, Archer demonstrates his captaincy — strengths, flaws, and all — courageous, confident, yet impatient with the leader Dolim while also showcasing his resilience, intellect, and diplomacy with the Xindi Primate, Degra.

"Terra Prime"

Archer solemnly sits with the palm of his hands touching with his crew standing behind him in 'Terra Prime'

Up until about a hundred years ago, there was one question that burned in every Human, that made us study the stars and dream of traveling to them. Are we alone? Our generation is privileged to know the answer to that question. We are all explorers driven to know what's over the horizon, what's beyond our own shores. And yet the more I've experienced, the more I've learned that no matter how far we travel, or how fast we get there, the most profound discoveries are not necessarily beyond that next star. They're within us, woven into the threads that bind us, all of us, to each other. A final frontier begins in this hall. Let's explore it together.

Captain Jonathan Archer, "Terra Prime"

"Terra Prime" delivers another masterclass Captain Archer speech, which highlights the fragile origins of the United Federation of Planets and his crucial role within the organization as president.

When the xenophobic Terra Prime threatens to destroy Starfleet Command, Archer manages to unite humans and other species alike in not letting the terrorist group's message continue on with his inspiring speech. The episode is just as relevant today as it was nearly 20 years ago, and is clear in what is needed — tolerance and compassion — in the face of hatred and mistrust to achieve our ideal universe.

Why Star Trek: Enterprise’s Captain Jonathan Archer Deserves More Love

For whatever reason, Star Trek: Enterprise doesn't seem to generate the same fan enthusiasm as some of the other Trek series.

One of the most asked questions among diehard Trekkies is, “Are you team Kirk or Picard?”. A heated discussion would then ensue, with some voices in favor of Star Trek: The Original Series ’ charismatic and brazen James T. Kirk (William Shatner), while others would stand firmly behind The Next Generation ’s and Picard ’s reigning Thespian, the more composed Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart).

In a franchise boasting twelve shows and thirteen movies (and counting), though, there is a plethora of equally competent and selfless characters who have helmed Starfleet’s starships, especially Voyager ’s Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Deep Space Nine ’s Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), and Paramount+’s Strange New World ’s Christopher Pike (Anson Mount).

One particular show, however, does not quite generate the same enthusiasm : Star Trek: Enterprise , which ran on UPN from 2001 to 2005, and is still streaming on Netflix. It serves as a 22nd-century prequel to TOS , chronicling how Captain Jonathan Archer ( Scott Bakula ) and his crew were the first to explore the Alpha and Beta quadrants under the flag of the United Earth, aboard the Enterprise NX-01. Most viewers don’t care much for the story’s development or its captain, arguing that he lacks the others’ charisma and aptitude. Here are a few reasons why you should cut Archer some slack, and maybe even see him in a more favorable light.

He Didn’t Have Much Going on For Him

Being the first to venture into deep space, make contact with species like Andorians, Romulans, Tholians, and the Xindi, and pilot a prototype that lacked the technology you’re used to (he barely had Warp 5), Archer was really just winging it, and learning from his mistakes. He dealt with issues that his successors didn’t need to, and paved the way for procedures like the Prime Directive, alert colors, and first-contact protocols. There is a reason he is Kirk’s childhood hero, after all, despite refraining from seducing every alien female he bumped into.

His Initial Optimism and Idealism

Archer wasn’t only furthering United Earth’s presence in the first two quadrants and establishing the guidelines to interstellar politics; he was also making his father’s dream of deep-space exploration come true. Henry Archer (Mark Moses) was the main engineer of the Enterprise NX-01, and one of the pioneers of the warp-five engine. He died leaving Jonathan with a strong sense of duty, and a love for the sciences and for space adventure.

It was with this enthusiastic mindset that the captain first started his journey. Having spent hours as a boy staring at an image of the Arachnid Nebula, for instance, he finally got the chance to admire it in person in the episode Fusion. Though ridiculed by audiences, his initial candor was entirely understandable, and would slowly turn into disenchantment as he encountered more and more hostile aliens, and both spatial and temporal anomalies. This character development had one upside, though: it eventually made Archer a more confident leader, a skilled diplomat, and a more experienced military tactician.

In a meeting with the fan-favorite Andorian commander, Shran ( played by the prolific Jeffrey Combs ), he remarks, "I imagined my first diplomatic mission would involve sitting around a big table, toasting with champagne, signing things with lots of pens…", to which an amused Shran retorted, "The pink skin sense of humor."

He still kept some of his idealism, though, as evident by his speech to his crew in season 3:

"I'm going to ask all of you to think back to the day when this ship was first launched. We were explorers then. When all this is over, when Earth is safe, I want you to get back to that job. There are four hundred billion stars in our galaxy, we've only explored a tiny fraction. You have a lot to do. Of all the captains who will sit in this chair, I can't imagine any of them being more proud than I am right now."

He Was the First to Save the Earth from Hostile Aliens

Archer may not have been the Emissary of the Prophets or the barrier between the Borg and the assimilation of entire galaxies, but he was the first captain to save the Earth from many disasters in both the present and the future, including the Temporal Cold War with the Suliban and the destruction of the planet with a Xindi bioweapon. Yes, he did have to resort to frowned-upon acts, such as torture a prisoner, clone his chief engineer to save him with harvested organs, thus killing said clone (but not before getting his permission), or steal a warp coil, but he was desperate to keep both his crew and his home world alive.

Through the seasons, Archer was thrown in many previously unchartered situations, and was frequently getting captured, tortured, stabbed, burned, and infected by a mutagenic virus and subspace parasites. This first deep-space mission certainly wasn’t all hunky-dory.

There Would Be No Federation Without Him

"We are making history with every light year."

After brokering peace treaties between feuding species, and securing a lasting alliance with the Andorians thanks to his friendship with Shran, Archer would go on to help found what would later become the United Federation of Planets, whose first members were Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites. What better way to shield the region from Romulan threat? He was a widely respected officer, and at least three starships and two planets would be named after him.

He Was Deemed Worthy by Surak Himself

Surak is considered to be the ultimate Vulcan role model, and the greatest philosopher and scientist ever, according to Spock himself. Right before his death, his katra or spirit was sealed within an ark. In Enterprise , the ark was found, and its force absorbed by the mortally wounded Vulcan Syrran, who then had to momentarily transfer it to Archer. Much to the surprise of the Syrranites present, the transfer worked.

Following this and for four days, the captain would have several spiritual encounters with Surak, who would give him the mission of recovering an artifact that is destined to unite the feuding Vulcan factions. A mere human must be really special to be bestowed the honor of hosting this particular katra.

Off-duty, Archer was a laidback person with simple taste, who enjoyed watching water polo matches. For this exciting adventure, he brought along his pet Beagle Porthos, named after one of the Three Musketeers, cajoling him, giving him treats, and nursing him when needed in Sick Bay. Surely that should make him more appealing to Trekkies who also happen to be animal lovers.

5 Things Only Adults Notice In Star Trek: Enterprise

Malcolm stares at Archer

From its almost universally hated theme song to its bare-bones, submarine-inspired ship energy, "Star Trek: Enterprise" tells one of the most fundamentally different stories in the Trek canon. Long before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) spread Federation ideals through the galaxy and Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) welcomed diplomats aboard his Space Hilton, the prototypical Enterprise NX-01 brought pre-Federation humanity to the stars — and what a wild ride it was.

Originally airing on the UPN network during the early 2000s around the same time as "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," "Enterprise" was part of a lineup that was meant to appeal to a fairly young demographic. For viewers who were still pretty young during the show's first run, rewatching from the business end of adulthood can be pretty eye-opening. From a storyline that's meant to parallel real-world events to steamy "Star Trek" scenes that would make even Q blush, here are five things only adults notice when watching "Enterprise."

1. There's a reason fans call Enterprise Sexy Trek

Among the Trekkie community, "Enterprise" is frequently referred to as "Sexy Trek," which is saying something in a franchise brimming with spandex, holodeck hookups, and even a candle sex ghost. Every Trek from "The Original Series" onward has its share of thirst traps from Kirk and William T. Riker's (Jonathan Frakes) horny space diplomacy to the generous use of Dabo girl underboob at Quark's bar. But "Enterprise" is a master class in sculpting a plot around lust-inducing eye candy.

While a millennial-era teenager might not have fully realized how gratuitously sexual "Enterprise" is, the salacious undertone can almost feel cringe-inducing at times when viewed through adult eyes. And nowhere is this more obvious than the ship's decon chamber, where the ship's hottest crewmates get to oil each other up while hanging out in their space undies after each mission.

One of the show's most unabashedly thirsty scenes is in "Xindi," when T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) strips away her top while directing Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer) in the art of Vulcan neuropressure. "You can apply considerable pressure," she directs him while cupping her nacelles for modesty's sake. "Harder...harder...just like that," before gasping and then directing him to "Please disrobe" so she can return the favor. And then there's that moment in "Shockwave" when a sweaty Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) loses her shirt while jumping down from an air vent. "In a Mirror, Darkly" brings Sexy Trek to its logical conclusion by pairing some of the franchise's most revealing crop tops with unnecessary girl-on-girl fighting and a steady stream of horny dialogue.

2. Archer is incredibly unprofessional

Captain Jonathan Archer's (Scott Bakula) personality throughout "Enterprise" serves as a constant reminder of how far Starfleet progresses as the decades and centuries pass. In contrast with the refined professionalism of later captains like Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), and Picard, Archer is fairly rough around the edges — which makes sense since he's literally writing the book on what it means to be a Starfleet leader. But a few rewatches in, his frequently unprofessional behavior can seem almost out of control at times, and it's hard to imagine Archer would make it far in the Picard-era Federation.

Rudeness, temperamental behavior, and an overall lack of respect for alien cultures are some of the hallmarks of Archer's early command. This serious lack of professionalism can be seen in the pilot episode "Broken Bow" as Archer appears before Starfleet Command and the Vulcan Council. When he is told the Vulcans want to delay the Enterprise launch, Archer immediately becomes disrespectful, mouthing off to the Klingons and his superiors before entering a medical treatment area without asking. When T'Pol calls humanity "volatile," he responds, "Volatile? You have no idea how much I'm restraining myself from knocking you on your a**."

In "A Night in Sickbay," Archer angrily complains to members of his crew about having to "grovel" after offending the Kreetassians. He then negligently lets his dog Porthos urinate on the Kreetassan planet, leading to an interplanetary diplomatic crisis Archer stubbornly refuses to take responsibility for until he's forced to.

3. The Xindi storyline is meant to parallel 9/11

"Star Trek: Enterprise" aired just two weeks after the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. Although younger audiences might not have caught it, the show's Xindi storyline drew heavy inspiration from this real-world terrorist act and its global impact. Beginning in the Season 2 finale, the Xindi storyline begins with a seemingly unprovoked devastating attack on the Earth from a previously unknown alien species ("The Expanse"). During the attack, an alien probe appears above the planet to carve out a 4,000-kilometer path of destruction running from Florida to Venezuela, killing 7 million victims and leaving the world stunned and horrified.

As Starfleet grapples with the fallout, Archer and his crew soon discover the attack was perpetrated by the Xindi, a race of aliens made up of five distinct species. It's later revealed that the attack was just a test run for a larger weapon meant to destroy the Earth ("Azati Prime"). Veteran Trek producer/director David Livingston confirmed the familiar story origin on the Season 3 video commentary, noting, "The Xindi were destroying parts of Earth. So, it was reflective of what was going on at the time." On Bob Saget's "Here For You" podcast, Scott Bakula later added, "Of course, our series was colored by 9/11 happening. We were shooting then and that eventually took over the direction of our show in terms of mirroring that event and casting it into the studio and painting it with the StarTrek brush."

4. The show recycles a lot of other Trek stories

Watch "Star Trek" long enough, and you might eventually start to realize that some of the plots feel awfully familiar. In a franchise with hundreds of episodes, it should hardly come as a surprise that tried-and-true sci-fi tropes keep showing up across Starfleet eras. But one of the more common criticisms of "Enterprise" is its writers' alleged overreliance on sliced, diced, but ultimately rehashed plots from other "Star Trek" series. Whether intentional or coincidental, many of the NX-01's adventures do seem to mirror other stories in the franchise pretty closely.

"Oasis," which starred eventual Borg Queen Annie Wersching and René Auberjonois (Odo on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), finds the Enterprise crew exploring a supposedly haunted ship populated by hologram-generated illusions. The plot so closely resembled the "Deep Space Nine" episode "Shadowplay" that Auberjonois mentioned it to Bakula while on set.

The episode "Dawn," which found Trip Tucker stranded with an alien he could not communicate with, is like a Wish.com copy of "The Next Generation" episode "Darmok," which in turn borrows heavily from the film "Enemy Mine." And "Vanishing Point," which features a terrified Hoshi believing that she's dematerializing after a transporter accident, is like a darker take on "The Next Generation" episode "The Next Phase." "Terra Nova" resembles the "Voyager" episode "Friendship One," and "Precious Cargo" marks the third use of "The Original Series" plot from "Elaan of Troyius," which showed up in the "Next Generation" episode "The Perfect Mate."

5. It has more character development than most Star Trek series

"Star Trek: Enterprise" might be something of an intergalactic hot mess — particularly in Season 1 when writers didn't seem to know what to do with some characters. But when taken as a whole, many fans have noticed this series presents some of the best character development in the "Star Trek" franchise. Nowhere is this more evident than with Archer, who grows from something of an anti-Vulcanist bigot with little respect for the serious historical implications of the crew's every interaction to a fully-formed diplomat with a commitment to creating a brighter future for humanity.

At the beginning of the show, T'Pol appears to be a stereotypical Vulcan — she seems to have little interest in being more than the Enterprise's space babysitter and frequently expresses a repressed disdain for humanity's food, habits, and even smells. As the series progresses, we see her grow, face personal demons, and form powerful friendships, particularly with Hoshi, Archer, and Trip. By the end, T'Pol has blossomed into a voice for interspecies cooperation who has come to deeply value her human counterparts.

Hoshi begins "Enterprise" as a brilliant linguist who is afraid of everything and struggles with severe anxiety. While aboard the Enterprise, she learns to rely on those around her for guidance and support and actively works on managing and overcoming her own mental health hurdles. Likewise, Trip matures both in his professional growth and his relationships with other characters, particularly with T'Pol, as seen when he puts her feelings before his own when faced with her arranged marriage to Koss ("Home"). Despite the show's rocky start, the crew's personal growth helps make "Enterprise" one of the most powerful character-driven stories in the "Star Trek" canon.

Jonathan Archer is a 22nd century Starfleet officer, best known for serving as commanding officer of NX-01 Enterprise .

Although multiple versions of Archer exist in Star Trek Timelines, he is the only Star Trek captain who does not have a proper "Captain Archer" version. Artwork for Captain Archer does exist, however, as he appears as part of the storyline for the Episode 6 mission Ancient Guardians .

‘Archer’ Meets ‘Star Trek: The Animated Series’ In This Delightful ‘Starcher Trek’ Mashup

Kris Maske

Have you ever found yourself wondering what it would be like if Sterling Archer captained the USS Enterprise? Of course you have! Well now the inspired folks behind Starcher Trek have made those musing a reality by melding audio from Archer on FX with animation from Star Trek: Than Animated Series from the 70s.

The first installment below (with hopefully lots more to come). Skip ahead if you don’t want to be spoiled on cast correlations, because: Sterling = Kirk (obviously), Lana = Uhura (obviously), Ray = Sulu (obviously), Cyril = Spock (fairly obviously), and Krieger = Bones (correction: Scotty, not so obviously). No Pam, Cheryl, or Malory sightings just yet, and I’m curious to which Star Trek characters they’ll align with, but hopefully all of that is tackled in the second installment. Oh, and Barry as Kahn or GTFO.

Until then, please enjoy Kirk ripping from Deliverance and Bones refusing to recognize your authority.

Dear internet, please give every old animated series this treatment. Thank you.

Star Trek: Best Book-Only Characters

  • The Star Trek novels introduce unique characters like Akaar and Treir, adding depth to the expansive Starfleet universe.
  • Characters like Nick Keller and Elias Vaughn bring new perspectives to the post- DS9 era, facing challenging galactic events.
  • Mackenzie Calhoun leads the USS Excalibur in a new hero ship series, showcasing tactical genius in the New Frontier books.

Just like the universe itself, the Star Trek franchise is huge and far-reaching, encompassing several television shows, and numerous video games, movies, and books. While many of Star Trek 's most iconic characters appear in various series and films, there are many other great characters who only feature in alternative media sources. For instance, the final frontier has spawned some memorable video game-based characters .

Star Trek: 8 Most Powerful Federation Starships, Ranked

Yet perhaps the richest source of characters is the now questionably canon series of books that take place following The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . From fresh takes on classic species like the Andorians and Orions, to some of Starfleet's finest officers, the Star Trek novels are a treasure trove of notable figures.

Leonard James Akaar

First appearence: star trek mission gamma book one: twilight.

  • Author: David R. George III
  • Publication Date: September 2002

Leonard James Akaar is unique among novel-only characters in that he does, in fact, make a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance on televised Trek . "Friday's Child," an episode of The Original Series , ends with his birth; however, the Capellan royal would not be seriously fleshed out until 2002's Mission Gamma: Twilight . By the time of the Deep Space 9 novels, Akaar had risen through the ranks of Starfleet to become an influential admiral with the ear of the Federation president.

Akaar's strategic mindset and steely resolve proved essential in preserving the Federation through some of its darkest periods, including the Borg invasion depicted in the Star Trek: Destiny series. The Starfleet legend may have been born in The Original Series , but the Star Trek novels were where he made his name.

First Appearence: Star Trek: Demons of Air and Darkness

  • Author: Keith R. A. DeCandido
  • Publication Date: September 2001

Star Trek features many inspirational female characters, from Kira Nerys to Katherine Janeway. However, few are as resourceful or as motivated as Treir , an Orion Dabo girl who transformed Quark's Bar into a highly successful business during the post- DS9 novels. Following her escape from Orion servitude, Treir earned her place as Quark's right-hand woman by implementing a series of radical reforms, including hiring a Dabo boy to attract more customers.

Star Trek: The Fates Of Every Live-Action TV Show's Main Character

Treir may not play a significant role in the canon-shattering events depicted in the Deep Space 9 novels, but this ruthless businesswoman helped to make Star Trek 's prose universe feel like a living, breathing place. If anyone is capable of giving Quark a run for his latinum, it's her.

Nick Keller

First appearence: star trek new earth: challenger.

  • Author: Diane Carey
  • Publication Date: August 2000

New Earth , a series of six novels that take place between Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan , was intended to act as a backdoor pilot for a new narrative focusing on Commander Nick Keller . In the final novel, Keller takes command of a makeshift starship in order to defend the human colony of Belle Terre from alien attack. Keller was conflicted between overthrowing his inept captain and preserving the lives of his comrades, and it's a great shame that a full series based on the space cowboy's adventures never emerged.

Interestingly, author Diane Carey based Keller's appearance on Scott Bakula, who would go on to play Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise . Keller, however, would make only two more appearances in the Star Trek universe, with both being part of the multi-series Gateways crossover event.

Elias Vaughn

First appearence: star trek: avatar (book one).

  • Author: S. D. Perry
  • Publication Date: July 2001

Elias Vaughn was a Starfleet officer and intelligence operative who joined Deep Space 9's command staff following the end of the Dominion War . Despite only holding the rank of commander, Vaughn's expertise proved a boon to the Federation outpost, and he played a role in several key events, including the USS Defiant 's post-war exploration of the Gamma Quadrant (depicted in the Mission Gamma sub-series).

Star Trek: 8 Impressive Things Kirk Did Before Joining The USS Enterprise

Vaughn was haunted by the death of his wife, Ruriko, and his troubled relationship with his estranged daughter, Prynn. This relationship was complicated by the fact that Prynn was also assigned to Deep Space 9. However, father and daughter were eventually able to reconcile–but not without some bumps along the way.

Christine Vale

First appearence: star trek: the belly of the beast.

  • Author: Dean Wesley Smith

While William Riker's USS Titan has made notable appearances in Star Trek: Lower Decks , the starship's adventures were originally chronicled in a series of spin-off novels. These books featured Christine Vale , a former detective turned Starfleet officer, as Riker's second-in-command. Vale was initially unwilling to take the post, as she disliked the idea of Riker working so closely with his wife, Deanna Troi.

Luckily, Vale took the post, which allowed her to act as a counterweight to any of Riker's Troi-related biases. During her time aboard the USS Titan , she helped to explore the Beta Quadrant and fend off a Borg invasion. Indeed, her record was so good that, following Riker's promotion to admiral, she took command of the Luna -class starship.

Thirishar ch'Thane

From their initial appearance in 1967's "Journey to Babel" and 2001's "The Andorian Incident," references to Star Trek 's Andorians were true and far between. One important detail was disclosed in The Next Generation , however: Andorians have four sexes , with all four required for successful reproduction.

The character of Thirishar ch'Thane (or "Shar") was a response to this premise. Shar served as Deep Space Nine's science officer following the end of the Dominion War, but was torn between his commitments to Starfleet and to his mating group, who wished him to return to Andor. This dilemma was further complicated by a dangerous decline in Andorian fertility, which threatened to cause the Andorians' extinction in the long term. Shar was eventually able to use his scientific knowledge to help solve the Andorian fertility crisis.

The Jem'Hadar are one of Star Trek 's most iconic creations , a powerful race of warriors motivated by their addiction to the chemical ketracel-white. During the Dominion War of 2373–2375, the Jem'Hadar were central to the Dominion assaults which nearly overwhelmed the Federation Alliance.

8 Best Starfleet Ships During The Dominion War

After the war's conclusion, Taran'atar , a Jem'Hadar without a ketracel-white dependency, was sent to Deep Space Nine as a cultural observer. Taran'atar's struggle to adjust to the Alpha Quadrant during peacetime makes for fascinating reading, as does seeing the fearsome warrior growing closer to his former enemies. Taran'atar's story takes some strange twists and turns, but he remains a fascinating character.

Mackenzie Calhoun

First appearence: star trek new frontier: house of cards.

  • Author: Peter David
  • Publication Date: July 1997

In 1997, Pocket Books published the first of Peter David's New Frontier books. While these novels included several characters from TV Trek (mostly notably Commander Shelby from "The Best of Both Worlds" ), they focused on a new hero ship, the USS Excalibur , and a new captain: Mackenzie Calhoun . Calhoun, an alien warrior modeled after Mel Gibson, was depicted as a tactical genius capable of beating Starfleet's toughest challenges–including the infamous Kobayashi Maru test.

Calhoun soon became a fan-favorite, with his New Frontier series including over 20 volumes. The Xenanian captain was even popular enough to be made into an action figure, the only example of this honor being bestowed on a character originating from any of Star Trek 's novels.

Sonequa Martin-Green Talks Facing Herself in Star Trek: Discovery's Fantastic New Episode

This week’s excellent episode of Star Trek: Discovery, “Face the Strange”, let the series take a moment to reflect on the four seasons that came before it in a wonderful meld of a classic Star Trek storytelling device and metatextual commentary. But in preparing to do so, its star found it much more challenging than she expected it to be.

“Face the Strange” sees Burnham and her new first officer, Commander Rayner, caught up in a repeating time loop that sees them revisit multiple eras of the Discovery’s past and future—but it climaxes in a moment where they’re sent back to the first season of the show , back when Michael had only just joined Discovery’s crew as a disgraced former officer, yearning to prove herself again. Which means, of course, as much as she was dreading the ideas of it happening, present Michael comes face to face with past Michael.

“Can I just be honest? It was hard, because I had forgotten how far Burnham had come!” Martin-Green told TrekCore of the scenes where she had to face herself. “I lived it, I created it, but I was so consumed with what was going on in the present day for Burnham that when I was able to see where I had come from–when I had to step into that Season 1 version again–I was apprehensive about it.”

“I went back and revisited Season 1 in a couple of ways: I went back and watched a little bit, I went back and read some of the earlier scripts, and I went back into my journal as the character,” the actress continued. “I had a sort of stream-of-consciousness journal that I would keep… and man, I didn’t even know what it was going to be like.”

Of course, because this is Michael we’re talking about, the two ultimately end up coming to blows as one stubbornly determined force of nature meets another—and for Martin-Green, the challenge of having to differentiate the two versions of Michael we see became even more complex for a fight scene to portray their narrative development. “I loved that we got to see the different fighting styles against each other, because it’s one of the major reasons why present-day Burnham defeats past Burnham–there’s a freedom and a security, and you can see that in the fight. We wanted to make sure you could see that in the fight, and I need to give credit to our stunt coordinator Chris McGuire and to Lee Rose for doing that. It was important for us to showcase that contrast, that growth, in the physical performance of the fight.”

It definitely showed, and in doing so, paid off what was easily one of Discovery’s best episodes in a while—one that it could only tell as a Star Trek show, and one it could only tell as it prepared to meet its final end.

“Thank you Jesus for letting me tell that story, because we need to see that… but it was painful. So it blessed and inspired me to be able to say to myself, ‘Man, I forgot how hopeless this time was. Just keep going!’” Martin-Green concluded. “If only we could all get an opportunity to say that to ourselves, right? Each character could have that same conversation with their Season 1 selves… ‘There’s hope ahead of you, keep going and don’t give up.’”

Archer's ending & slater's fate reflected on by christian slater.

EXCLUSIVE: Christian Slater opens up about his character’s fate at the end of Archer and shares his thoughts on how the series finale unfolded.

  • Christian Slater's character in Archer meets his demise in the finale after a scuffle with Archer.
  • Slater approached Archer creators to join the show as he was a fan, voicing the heavily fictionalized version of himself.
  • Slater playfully hints that his animated character's death may not be permanent, leaving room for future possibilities.

Christian Slater opens up about his character's fate at the end of Archer and shares his thoughts on the finale. Although the long-running spy comedy was expected to conclude with its fourteenth and final season, it was announced shortly after that Archer: Into the Cold would serve as the show's official farewell. The three-part saga premiered in December 2023, providing closure to the titular Sterling Archer, Lana Kane , and even the returning Agent Slater.

In an interview with Screen Rant ahead of the release of his new Roku show, The Spiderwick Chronicles , Slater looked back on the legacy of Archer and discussed the process that led him to join the animated comedy . In the quote below, Slater mentions being a fan of Archer and reaching out to ask if there was any way that he could be involved with the project. He also reacts to reprising his role as Slater, sharing his views on the finale:

I was watching that show religiously, first, second, third, fourth season, I just loved it, I just identified with it. To be honest with you, I reached out to them. I said, “Look, if there’s ever anything I can do on that show, let me know.” Well, you know, you don’t know, they could hang up the phone, they can completely ignore me. But they took me up on it, and it was the best. I got to know H. Jon Benjamin very well, that whole team is great. You go in and do a voiceover, you’re in a booth, you’re by yourself and you’re just reading funny lines and having a great time with those guys. So, yeah, it’s a bummer, of course, that they ended it after 14 seasons. But, I think they did a great job. I think the finale was great, and I loved playing Slater. I thought that was really fun. [Chuckles] The cool thing when they were sending me the images of what the character was going to be, it was great to be able to pick my hair color. Originally, they wanted blonde and I was like, “Come on, I’m not blonde, let’s go. Let’s really make it look like me, I want to be preserved.” That’s the other thing with animation is you never get any older. Of course, on that show, they pulled a fast one and put that white streak in my hair, and I was like, “Hey, the hell’s going on?!” [Chuckles] So, even in animation, they have to age you…That was the thing when we were shooting, when we were recording the last scene, I didn’t want to die like Chef in South Park, because you knew he was dead. There’s no way he’s coming back. [Laughs] Everything they could possibly do. So, I was very curious if they were going to kill me off completely, or what was going to happen. I think they handled it well. But there’s always a possibility, so we’ll see.

Christian Slater's Archer Character, Explained

What happened to his character at the end.

Essentially, the actor Christian Slater played a fictionalized version of himself. This character, Slater, is introduced as a CIA agent who poses as an arms dealer. He eventually becomes the CIA's liaison to the show's pivotal International Secret Intelligence Service. Before his return for the three-part Archer finale , Slater last appeared in season 13, helping the team in their efforts to take down Fabian Kingsworth.

Slater voiced the heavily fictionalized version of himself in 13 episodes of the series overall, first appearing in the season 5 episode "Archer Vice: On the Carpet." He would then appear most frequently in season 6, making a one-off appearance in season 7, prior to returning in the final two seasons. As alluded to in Slater's remarks, the character falls to his death in the series finale after a scuffle with Archer.

Archer: The 10 Best Episodes Ranked

Slater's death does serve a purpose in the narrative, with Archer declaring that he doesn't need to know who his father is and rejecting the offer that Slater trotted out at the last minute. Still, Slater does seem to playfully suggest in the interview that his animated counterpart could have survived. In the wild world of Archer , far stranger things have happened.

Archer is available to stream on Hulu.

Archer is an animated sitcom following the agents and support staff of ISIS (International Secret Intelligence Service). Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) is the show's narcissistic protagonist and ISIS's star agent, working under his mother Malory (Jessica Walter), and alongside agents Lana (Aisha Tyler) and Cyril (Chris Parnell).
