Delayed two years, our 2022 edition looks to be the only regional event planned for the western states next year.

We were able to secure the same room rates and pricing as our 2020 event contract allowed. We’re proud to share both with you for next October’s event.

San Diego Miata Club’s SURF ‘N’ SAFARI 2022

Participating in car club activities, including the San Diego Miata Club’s SURF ‘N’ SAFARI, is a huge benefit to driving a sports car.

Some clubs are dedicated to one particular make or model of car, whereas other clubs welcome all sorts of makes and models. Some clubs gravitate mostly towards competitive motorsports events; others are focused more on social events; and some are both.

I have been a member of various car clubs stretching back decades — first in Western Canada, where I am from originally — and, more recently, in California, which is where I moved to in the 1980s.

I’ve owned many sports cars over the years, four of which being Mazda Miatas. Aside from my especially enjoying driving them on public roads (the more tight turns, the better!), I also autocrossed them from the late 1970s until just a few years ago (autocrosses are relatively low-speed, competitive driving events that usually include some very tight, slow turns, and are often held in parking lots, on courses delineated by traffic cones).

In San Diego there are many car clubs. One car club that is particularly large and active in social events, including road trips, is the San Diego Miata Club (SDMC). A small group of members, including myself, used to also regularly compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s San Diego Region autocrosses.

According to long-time SDMC member Steve Waid, the club started in March, 1996. He and his wife joined in early 1997. His first Miata was a used 1990 model, but how he ended up choosing it, which became their first of several Miatas, was not what you might expect. He was looking for a particular yellow Corvette roadster — the 1987 Indy Pace Car model. However, since those proved hard to come by and he had driven a Miata once, they decided to “just go get a Miata until we find the Corvette.” “Well, guess what? It’s 2022. We still haven’t found that Corvette!”

Every few years the SDMC holds our special SURF ‘N’ SAFARI event, made possible thanks to the efforts of a large group of enthusiastic volunteers. Miata drivers come from across the country and beyond to participate in the Miata fun and camaraderie. SURF ‘N’ SAFARI 2022, which was held this past weekend, was headquartered at the Singing Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan.

Our first full day featured a choice of drives on what were predominantly two-lane, winding public roads through San Diego County’s scenic back country.

I chose to go on the longest of these drives: the 5½-hour Desert View Tower Run. Its location was a way station for travelers for centuries. To get there we enjoyed a brisk drive along San Diego County’s Historic Highway 80.

On our way back, we stopped for lunch at beautiful Lake Cuyamaca. Other drive choices were the Mt. Helix, East County, Camel Dairy and Julian runs.

After our runs, we took advantage of snacks, socializing and goodies in the resort’s hospitality suite, followed by our first of two banquets: the California Luau Buffet. Live music was provided by the incredible Gary Seiler (visit GarySeiler.com).

The next day (Saturday) was the SURF ‘N’ SAFARI rally.

Designed to take the better part of the day, it required following a lengthy and convoluted set of rally instructions that were devised by the aforementioned (and devious) Steve Waid. One of his stated goals was to level the playing field so that the rally did not favor locals over out-of-towners, intentionally making the instructions tricky to understand. It certainly had the desired effect on me. I was unable to even correctly follow the directions to get out of the first destination: San Diego’s Balboa Park. Between my utter confusion with the rally instructions, the fact that I did not have a navigator, and the massive crowds of people in the park that day, I soon decided to be gracious and let someone else win the rally.

That evening we enjoyed our second banquet, where Steve publicly acknowledged my utter inability to decipher his rally instructions.

On Sunday, we met one last time to recognize several special cars, and to take group photos of the orange 30 th Anniversary Edition 2019 Miatas (one of which was mine).

Jan, to my eyes, I can’t tell the difference between a Canon R3 and an iPhone 14. I guess if all professional photographers preferred iPhones to real cameras, there would be no real camera industry. David.

David, Where I can see the very noticeable difference is in when I am editing the photos in Adobe Lightroom and Topaz plug-ins, on my office computer (a large, high resolution iMac Pro). I magnify the images when I edit them to look for grain and other distractions. Jan

Jan, your wonderful photos and narration perfectly convey the fun and camaraderie of belonging to a car club. Unlike you, I never belonged to a car club. The closest I ever came was during the years I lived in Montreal, and skied in the Laurentien Mountains just north of the city.

Most of my ski buddies and their wives/girlfriends were into sports/imported cars. At least three owned Chevy Corvair Monza Spyder Turbos, others had British classic Triumphs, MGs or Sunbeams, and a few had early Volvos

Out of self preservation (blizzards, punctures, mechanical breakdowns and wet electrical systems), we would travel in small convoys, leaving on Friday night and returning Sunday evening. Beyond that there was no real organization so we never became a car club.

Your Miata club seems to be a nice group of people. When you bought your Limited Edition Anniversary Orange Miata, did you ever imagine so many others lined up in a row? Great column. David

David, Thank you for the wonderful comments. I really enjoyed reading them. I worked all night finishing up editing the 65 photos for that Miata club column. It represented an experiment for me. Instead of taking along one of my professional R3 cameras, for most of the event I decided to travel light and just use my new iPhone 14 Pro Max instead. That was a mistake. Whereas I get usable pictures in a variety of tough situations when shooting with my Canon R3 cameras, iPhone pictures that are shot in low light look good on the phone’s screen but look really poor when I look at them on my computer. I should have shot in the iPhone’s RAW format. NEXT, I have two more new columns that I would like to finish editing photos for and then upload in the next couple of days: one column contains reviews of a book about GM CEO Mary Barra’s plans for that company’s EV future plus a review of a new iPhone case that I use on my own iPhone exclusively; plus a second column written this morning containing a review of the new Dwayne Johnson super hero movie entitled “BLACK ADAM.” Finally, I need to write next week’s column this week, since I’ll be in Las Vegas next week to cover motorsports and the SEMA Show. Over 50 years of history

The Surf Safari has been a highlight of the Surf Sports calendar in Tasmania, since 1968. The River Derwent comes alive with the best endurance athletes and lifesavers displaying their skills across a range of events including the challenging 20km long course for surf boats and ski paddlers. The early years of the Surf Safari saw ski paddlers and surf boat rowers compete over a gruelling 42 k course from Hobart to Lewisham with a portage through the Lauderdale canal. In recent years, the Surf Safari Event program has been extended to include ocean skis, stand up paddle boards, outriggers, junior Malibu boards and coastal rowing craft, with both long and short courses to ensure there is an event available to everyone.

In 2018, the Surf Safari celebrated 50 years of continuous surf craft racing in Tasmania. In ever unpredictable Tasmanian spring weather conditions, the 50th Surf Safari was a real test for competitors, officials and water safety. Gale force winds and snow on the mountain did not faze the record field that turned up to celebrate 50 years of racing. Just metres separated the top three placegetters in the Open ski. An armada of 26 surf boats, with crews from around the state made for quite a spectacle start line. The event attracts Olympians, World champions and Australian champions rowing boats, paddling surf skis and boards. Check out the results page and see who you recognise.

2023 Entry & Course details

The event will take place on the picturesque River Derwent which runs through the city of Hobart. The river and estuary provide a relatively safe, but at times testing, environment for the event. This year, the Surf Safari event hub will be at Long Beach Lower Sandy Bay – 5kms south of the Hobart CBD.

Ocean & Spec Ski – 8km & 18km

The Long Course event of approximately 18 km will be conducted in a “weather window”, in an attempt to maximize downwind conditions. The start time will be no later than 11.00 am to ensure a finish in time for the presentations and postrace celebrations. The Long Course Options • Course from the south – launch and start from Tinderbox, upstream and finish at Sandy Bay. • Course from the north – launch at Claremont Bay staying on the eastern side of the river to a selected point before heading cross river and south. • Course in westerly conditions – starting at Sandy Bay, heading down river to a designated point before heading across the river to the Doran’s Road boat ramp. • In adverse conditions, an out and back course will ensure the event is conducted. • Paddlers need to be present at the race briefing. The course and other important information will be posted on the @surfsafari Facebook page 48 hours prior to the event. The Long Course ski event is part of the Australian Ocean Racing Series and will attract series points based on age and other criteria. A shorter 8km out and back loop ski race will be on offer for the Open, Under 17, Under 19, Over 35, Over 50 and Over 60 divisions (Male and Female). This race is ideally suited to novice paddlers or those have not done the work to compete in the Long Course. Double ski events will also be held over both the long and short courses. Rogerson & Birch Surf boat – 8km & 18km

This year’s Surf boat racing will be held over three endurance distances. The Long Course of approximately 18km will start with the skis (see above) and finish at Long Beach Sandy Bay. The 8km out and back course will be available for start and finish at Long Beach Sandy Bay. The shorter race for is ideally suited to novice crews or the “more experienced” rowers wanting to blow out the cobwebs. Rogerson & Birch Surveyors are the proud major sponsors of the boat event.

Coastal Rowing and Outriggers

Coastal rowing is an emerging international sport with 1, 2 and 5 person crews participating. Courses are similar to the ski and surf boat events. Outriggers may enter either the Long or Short course.

Board – 2km & 4km

A 4km Malibu board course will be available for the U15 and U17s. While a shorter 2km course has been designed for U11 and U13 racing on Nipper boards. Minimum age is 10 years old on the 30th of September in the year of the event. Both courses will start and finish on Long Beach and require competitors to test their endurance skills in the confines of the bay. Our East Cape Surf Safaris are designed for all ages and skill levels with guests taken to the best waves of the day, somewhere along the magical Baja peninsula. Trips generally range from 4-5hrs depending on the surf location, with a minimum of 2.5hrs of water time. As trips are always private, we can make trips shorter if needed to ensure they fit into your schedule.

What to expect for your skill level

We will start with some beach preparation to refine your surfing pop-up then jump in the water and develop everything from your board control, paddling and surfing technique. We take all the hard work out of surfing! We select, guide, position, paddle, and push you into the perfect waves so all you have to do is pop-up and enjoy the ride!!

INTERMEDIATE

We can continue to develop your skill set by breaking down your technique, maneuvers, positioning and targeting keys aspects of your surfing through in-water coaching. We can work on as much or as little as you like, but will always share our extensive knowledge of each location so you get the most out the day.

We know this coastline inside out and will be able to put you on the best waves without you even having to look at the forecast. We take the guess work out of where and when to surf, and getting you into the less crowded waves. There is nothing worse than turning up to a wave only to be told you should have been here earlier!!!

What time do we leave?

We run surf trips from sunrise to sunset. For those early risers we can arrive on location at first light to catch the sunrise as we paddle out, or catch the last wave of the day as the sun goes down. We will always aim to surf the best time of day, which takes into consideration the key components of tides, winds and swell.  

Where will we go?

The waves we surf are firstly dependant on your surfing ability, then based on the conditions forecasted for the day. We have access to waves that cater to all skill levels and abilities, with some locations perfect for all skill levels on the same day. Travel times can range from 10min – 1hr each way.  

What's Included?

We provide everything you need for an incredible day out on the water or at the beach. If you have any specific request for your trip, just let us know and will certainly look to accommodate it.  

What if i need to cancel?

There is a 24hr cancelation policy for all trips. Cancelations made within 24hrs will incur a 100% charge
