Switzerland Travel Guide

Looking for an in-depth Switzerland travel guide ?

Then you’re in the right place!

Anyone who’s traveled to Switzerland is far from neutral on this gorgeous European nation. From beautiful blue lakes to quaint mountain towns to modern cities, Switzerland has something to offer every kind of traveler.

Its location in the heart of the Alps makes it a bucket list destination for many skiers and snowboarders who can enjoy the slopes throughout the year and even into the summer in some locations.

But even if you’re not a fan of heights, you’ll definitely find something to love about Switzerland.

The Alps are naturally a must-see for anyone traveling to Switzerland. Aside from the aforementioned world-class ski slopes, you can explore the area via horse-drawn sleigh in some towns or take a cable car up a mountain for incredible views.

Want to play James Bond for the day?

Head to Piz Gloria, a rotating restaurant atop Schlithorn mountain that was featured in the 1969 007 film On Her Majesty’s Service .

If you’re looking for a quieter retreat, head to Gimmelwald , not far from Interlaken , a peaceful village among the clouds. It’s the perfect place for a solo traveler to get a little rest and relaxation.

While the mountains may be Switzerland’s main draw, you can’t miss the country’s major cities like Geneva, Zurich, and Bern.

Geneva is a lakeside city probably best known as the home of the United Nations and Red Cross headquarters. Global diplomacy aside, this city is definitely worth a day’s visit for its gorgeous architecture, cobblestone streets, and classic Swiss cuisine (hello, fondue!).

Zurich also offers much to explore from its charming old town to its many museums dedicated to everything from football to clocks.

And it’s easy to travel from city to city in Switzerland using the Swiss Rail Pass!

This travel pass offers visitors unlimited train, bus and boat travel on the country’s extensive transportation system for a set number of days.

While it’s far from inexpensive, the pass also offers free travel on public transportation systems in several cities and perks like free museum admission. Read on to learn more about the Swiss Rail Pass in the FAQ section.

However you plan to see Switzerland, you certainly won’t regret it.

Keep reading to dive into resources that will help you with planning a trip to Switzerland in Europe.

Switzerland Travel Insurance

It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling solo or with a group on a Switzerland tour. When visiting Switzerland — or any other country in the world — make sure to get travel insurance to protect your health and safety.

In my opinion, the best travel medical insurance for travelers is SafetyWing as they’ve got a large network and offer both short-term and long-term coverage — including coverage if you’re traveling for months as well as limited coverage in your home country).

Additionally, SafetyWing is budget-friendly and offers $250,000 worth of coverage with just one low overall deductible of $250.

With coverage, you’ll have peace of mind as you embark on your Switzerland travel itinerary.

Switzerland Travel Guide FAQ

Below, find answers to frequently asked questions about traveling in Switzerland .

Q: How much should I budget for a trip to Switzerland?

Traveling to Switzerland is not cheap. In fact, the country was named the most expensive country in the world to visit by Business Insider.

Goods and services in Switzerland cost about 50% more than they do in the United States so be prepared to encounter much higher prices for everyday items like coffee and fast food than you might in other countries.

The average traveler spends about $220 USD per day on accommodations, transportation, food, and activities in Switzerland.

There are, of course, many ways to save money during your trip. Limit your alcohol consumption and try to cook some of your meals, as food and beverages are quite expensive throughout the country.

Also, consider hostels and Couchsurfing to save on accommodations.

Q: What do I need to know before traveling to Switzerland?

When it comes to what to know when traveling to Switzerland, there are a few things note.

Switzerland has a robust public transportation system and it’s easy to get around the country by train and bus.

A Swiss Rail Pass gives you unlimited access to the country’s train, bus, and boat system as well as public transportation in 90 Swiss cities and towns. The pass also gives you free admission to over 500 museums throughout the country and access to mountain excursions in the Alps.

Second class passes start at around $262 USD for 3 days — steep, but absolutely worth it, given the perks.

Switzerland also has four official languages:

German, French, Italian and Romansh.

The most predominantly-spoken language depends on where you are in the country. The western part of the country that borders France mainly speaks French, the center mostly speaks German, the southern tip that borders mainly speaks Italian, and Romansh is mostly spoken in the southeastern canton of the Grisons.

Throughout the country, you’ll see directions and official signs posted in all four of these languages.

English is also widely spoken throughout the country.

It’s also important to note that the Swiss tend to start and end their work early. Shops tend to close around 7 pm and even earlier on weekends. Some businesses in small towns shut down entirely on Mondays so be sure to check operating hours before heading out.

Switzerland also does not have a robust nightlife scene and public transportation usually stops running at midnight.

Q: How many days is enough for Switzerland?

Most experts recommend planning six to seven days for a trip to Switzerland.

A week should allow you enough time to visit cities like Geneva, Bern, and Lucerne as well as must-see sights like the Matterhorn in Zermatt.

And with your Rail Pass, you can easily travel between each destination.

Q: Is Switzerland safe to travel?

Switzerland is one of the safest countries in the world for tourists thanks to its strict laws.

Violent crime rates are low but travelers may be targets for petty crime and theft, particularly in congested and tourist-heavy areas. Always be aware of your surroundings, keep any valuables close and out of sight in pickpocket-proof garments , and know that thieves may work in pairs.

Q: How long can a tourist stay in Switzerland?

Most tourist visas will allow you to stay in Switzerland for up to 90 days without engaging in any professional activity during your stay.

Q: Do I need a Switzerland travel visa?

Travelers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Schengen Area member countries , and several other countries do not need a visa to visit Switzerland for a period of fewer than 90 days.

It’s recommended to view your country’s Switzerland International Travel Information page for the most up-to-date information on entry and exit requirements. You can also contact the Consulate General of Switzerland.

Q: When is the best time to visit Switzerland?

If you’re looking for peak season, visit June through August; however, if you want to score a great deal, consider spring — particularly April and May when it’s a bit warmer.

Q: Where is Switzerland?

Switzerland is located in Central Europe and is bordered by Italy (south), France (northwest), Liechtenstein (northeast), Austria (east), and Slovenia (southeast).

Q: Are credit cards accepted in Switzerland?

Credit cards — particularly Visa and Mastercard — are widely accepted around Switzerland, though it is always wise to carry some cash for smaller establishments and in case of emergency.

Q: Can you drink the tap water in Switzerland?

Yes, it is safe to drink tap water in Switzerland.

Q: What is the local currency in Switzerland?

The local currency in Switzerland is the Swiss franc.

Cruise Lake Geneva

On a sunny day, there’s no better way to tour Switzerland than by water. Gaze at the country from its largest lake and learn something new about its shores, choosing a historic paddle boat, passenger ferry or cocktail-sipping sunset cruise.

Discover the 15th-century vineyards of Cave Champ de Clos

The Conne family have been producing wine for centuries in the heart of the UNESCO heritage region of Lavaux. Be hypnotized by rows of terraced vineyards then retire to the stone cellar to taste the vintages they have produced.

The alps are home to an endlessly romantic trail that can be taken on horse carriage ride. Rug up in blankets for this fairytale experience through alpine forests, arriving at a destination of snow capped mountains and an impressive glacier. The kind of views imagined when dreaming up a Switzerland trip.

Ride up to Stans by Switzerland's oldest mountain railway

Start in Lucerne and travel along tracks from the 1890s, watching villages and views pass by in the window. With wildflower meadows in the summer and snow dusted trees in winter, you will unwind as you wind around the mountains for 30 minutes before reaching the top.

Travel to the heart of Switzerland, Interlaken

The unassuming town of Interlaken is the perfect base to connect with the soul of Switzerland. Explore over 700 hikes which roam into the mountains from your doorstep, with charming isolated villages found sitting between them.

Our top 5 things to do in Switzerland

We'll take you through the pristine natural beauty of this country, with a trip that's filled with moments of awe. Lakes, grapevines and alpine forests prove it's not just the hills that are alive in Switzerland.

Swiss National Museum

There is a reason this is Switzerland's most frequently visited museum of cultural history. Inside, you will immerse in the past and present through some 840,000 objects. From bronze Age bowls to silver knight’s armor, nowhere else will deliver such a rich and comprehensive insight into the Swiss.

Lake Geneva

Charlie Chaplin museum

The property where Charlie Chaplin spent his last years provides an intimate glimpse into the iconic entertainer's life and work. Be moved by a walk through the vast estate, where you will marvel at his original bowler hat and boots, hear tales from friends and touch painstakingly replicated movie sets.

Zentrum Paul Klee

The namesake of this museum is one of the 20th century's most important artists. Step into the space to quietly take in his artworks, you might find yourself lost in the famous cubism inspired 'Insula dulcamara' or colorful jigsaw that the German-Swiss genius was most famous for.

Best museums in Switzerland

There's more to this landlocked country than army knives and chocolate. With Trafalgar, you will gain a deeper understanding of Switzerland through these must-visit museums.

Once a farmers’ breakfast, Rösti is now a plate popular amongst the Swiss. One bite into this crisp baked potato and you will be hooked. Luckily, the country's many regions boast their own versions, offering an excuse to sample many during your tour of Switzerland.

There is more to this classic fare than dipping bread into a pot of melted cheese. It’s a sacred pastime. To the Swiss, fresh bread and bubbling creamy Gruyere is incomplete without one vital ingredient: good company. Indulge in authentic fondue in Switzerland in the company of new friends.

Swiss chocolate

Chocolate aficionados will find no shortage of pleasure in the smooth chocolate of Switzerland. The birthplace of Lindt, Toblerone, Mövenpick and more, a banquet of cocoa will be enjoyed here in the name of culture.

Best food in Switzerland

Baked potato, melted cheese and genuine chocolate. The culinary delights of Switzerland were designed with only the pleasure of taste in mind, and it's an indulgence Trafalgar is only too happy to share with you.

What to pack for Switzerland

People packing for a tour

Even in summer, layers are vital in Switzerland. Temperatures differ throughout through the country and can get particularly crisp in the higher mountains.

A good quality camera

In a place known for pinch me moments, it would be remiss to forget something more than just a smartphone to capture them all.

Swiss Francs

Switzerland may be at the core of Europe, but this country abandoned the Euro many years ago. Though you can still use them in some larger establishments, but it's better to arm yourself with plenty of Francs so you're never caught short.

A phrasebook

A phrasebook with the national languages of German, French and Italian is essential on a tour of Switzerland. If you really can’t spare the space, download them to your Google Translate app offline.

Walking shoes

If your trip is likely to see you traversing the dynamic landscapes of Switzerland, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots should be on the packing list.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Winter Wonderland: Explore the Magic of Switzerland

Imagine yourself on top of the world, a snow-white panorama of mountains and lakes dazzling the eye. You're surveying a land where you can soar in gondola lifts above glaciers, soak in hot springs in medieval hamlets and savor farm-fresh cuisine in chalets twinkling with fairy lights.

This is Switzerland in winter, the season when its world-renowned Alpine resorts ascend to their magical best. Wintertime visitors discover a unique blend of luxury and leisure, adventure and breathtaking vistas, all within effortless reach thanks to the legendary Swiss commitment to organization and efficiency.

Fly the SWISS Way

switzerland tourism nyc

Your introduction to Switzerland’s exceptional standards starts the moment you board the national carrier, Swiss International Air Lines . Daily direct flights link U.S. gateways — Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Newark and San Francisco — with Zurich and Geneva.

The airline's transatlantic fleet features seasonal SWISS Taste of Switzerland menus inspired by Michelin-starred restaurants and accompanied by the nation’s finest regional wines. Large touch-screen entertainment centers and the option to purchase WiFi ensure that passengers will remain happily occupied throughout their flights. Premium passengers experience pampered privacy in mini-suites complete with intimate lighting, an oak dining table, an ottoman that transforms into a second seat, and the industry’s finest flatbed seat for a restful night’s sleep.

Winter sports enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their snow or ski gear, because Swiss International Air Lines carries ski equipment for free.

From Airport to Alps: A Ticket to Everywhere

switzerland tourism nyc

Once you’re on Swiss soil, there’s no need to get behind an unfamiliar wheel, because punctual rail services deliver you high into the Alps and virtually to your resort hotel door. The entire transportation network — trains, buses, even boats — is yours to explore with a single ticket, the Swiss Travel Pass . (Travelers aged under 16 get one for free.)

Along the way, you’ll marvel at the sheer ambition and ingenuity of Swiss engineering. Powerful mountain-climbing trains travel above the tree line and sometimes the clouds to reach ear-popping elevations in the heart of the Alps. Special sightseeing journeys by rail, including the glass-sided Glacier Express, offer day-long rolling panoramas of mountain ranges, valleys, forests and frozen lakes.

The Swiss Travel Pass allows visitors to explore the entire country, including stunning regions like Engelberg, Jungfrau, Valais Matterhorn and St. Moritz.

Engelberg: A Historic Resort With a Cable-Car Twist

switzerland tourism nyc

Barely a 90-minute journey south of Zurich lies Engelberg , Switzerland’s oldest ski resort. The village traces its origins to a 12th-century Benedictine abbey and today serves as a base camp for Mount Titlis, a glacier-topped adventure center equipped to entertain skiers and non-skiers alike.

The summit is reached via a spectacular two-stage journey by gondola lift and the Rotair, the world’s first rotating cable car. Those not planning to explore the 51 miles of ski runs can dine and shop on top, including at the world’s highest watch store. Or explore an ice cave and take a high-speed chairlift called the Ice Flyer to a glacier park that offers inner tube trips down specially groomed slopes.

What to See

Where to stay.

The much larger hillside Hotel Waldegg offers a luxury pool–spa complex and a restaurant with panoramic views of the mountain. Engelberg’s free electric buses stop outside both hotels.

switzerland tourism nyc

Jungfrau Region: Gem of the Bernese Oberland

switzerland tourism nyc

A half hour south of Switzerland’s capital, Bern, the Jungfrau Region features several resorts all connected by trains, lifts and cable cars. The cogwheel Jungfrau Railway makes a slow, steep descent through tunnels in the famed Eiger and Mönch mountains to reach the continent’s highest train station at Jungfraujoch, dubbed “The Top of Europe,” with its superlative views of the entire Bernese Oberland from 11,373 feet. The village of Grindelwald offers the most central base, while nearby Kleine Scheidegg sits beside the Eiger.

Those seeking a modern hotel experience opt for the suites at Grindelwald’s Aspen Alpin Lifestyle Hotel . With superb panoramic views and an award-winning spa, this hotel is the Bellevue's contemporary luxurious counterpart.

switzerland tourism nyc

Valais Matterhorn Region: Resorts to Match Their Mountains

switzerland tourism nyc

This southwestern region features the Matterhorn, the most famous mountain in the Alps, and two world-class resorts: Verbier and Zermatt. Verbier is French in character and has some of the Alps’ finest nightlife, while German-speaking Zermatt is a car-free village of timber-frame chalets, serene ambience and posh dining by candlelight.

Verbier’s most stylish new address, geared toward couples, is the W Verbier , which offers 123 luxurious rooms with balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s also the perfect ski-in, ski-out option, with the main cable-car station directly outside.

switzerland tourism nyc

St. Moritz: Switzerland’s Gold-Medal Winter Retreat

switzerland tourism nyc

This lakeside spa town in Switzerland’s southeast region is the heartland for Swiss winter sports. It hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and these days the town welcomes a particularly chic cross-section of European jet-setters. There’s always something special going on, including a festival of gourmet food by 10 top chefs in January and horse races on the frozen lake in February. Visitors can also enjoy Corvatsch Snow Night — night skiing on the longest illuminated slope in Switzerland.

Those needing a luxurious supplement to St. Moritz’s shopping and clubbing can stay at the five-star St. Moritz Carlton Hotel , with its 60 lake-view suites and a three-story spa with pools, saunas and massages.

Top 5 airlines serving from switzerland to new york.

It was a crowded flight. They did the best they could.

Super good crew... food was pretty awful- overall Delta is my favorite carrier- takes off on time, good boarding process etc.

Boarding was a little confusing as many folks were trying to get on through priority boarding instead of general. Everything else was excellent.

When checking our bags at the Virgin Atlantic counter, the employee told us that we should go to Delta because we needed to verify our passports and our names. Fortunately the employee organizing the line stopped us and asked why we didn't hand over our suitcases. He sent us to another line and told the employee that we already have the passports verified in the reservation. She understood and received our suitcases. In London they have a general waiting room, where you stay until the gate number of your flight is announced. KAYAK informed us the gate number hours before the airlines did. Just like the flight to London, the legroom is too small. abusive for a flight of so many hours.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Seats were broken in premium select and so was monitored on my seat and other people around me

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

Great flight crew, easy boarding, delicious snacks and spacious seats. Love flying delta - worth the price.

Horrible. First delta flight was delayed. I ran to my connecting flight and arrived to the gate 13 mins before departure. I told the gate agent “I’m here”, she told me flight was closed while giving my already confirmed seat to an stand by passenger. I said again “madam, I’m here with my confirmed seat” and she said “no you’re not here@ and gave two stand by people a boarding pass and let them board. I asked “madam, why do you do that?”, and she repeated “you’re not here”. That was very rude. I’m disappointed of delta. It used to have a good customer service. Things have changed, but not for good.

SO disappointing. I spent so much money on this ticket, for them to cancel and not be able to rebook me in time. They were very unhelpful, and condescending throughout the whole Swiss airport. Will not be flying again.

The plane was so hot upon boarding. Their boarding process was so unnecessarily long. Service was subpar.

Everything from the price to online checkin and the flight being on time to the crew and food was very good. The comfort level is fine--the seats are very close to each other in Economy. But I guess you get what you pay for.

Swiss ground crew was again at its prime and although I’m United 1K (Star Alliance Gold) they created problems with my hand luggage - while other passengers were boarding with more handbags and larger hand luggages, were critical on my 2 young kids attending the lounge with me and boarding the plane with me on the priority lane.

Horrible experience. I was apparently picked at random for a security screening - that was the most demeaning experience I have had in my life with a guy poking and prodding and having me take off my shoes, move up my pants so he could swab my legs - telling me I couldn't bring more than some quantity of cookies - I had 3 boxes of cookies in my luggage. In the end he did let me keep them but that was really uncalled for. Harrassment in the name of security.

They went out of their way. It was very clean and friendly.

I was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. Thank you

There were multiple delays and the food was poor. Better food.

Wheelchair was the excellent service. I didn’t have any food or used entertainment. Overall for my trip experience was excellent. Thank you very much and keep up good work. Best regards

Not exceptional but all good. Business class seats are like the domestic Mint class on Jet Blue. Comfortable but not exceptional. Food is good but not superb. Flight attendants were better on India leg than Miami to Zurich. All India staff was more professional and service oriented. Very polite and service with a smile.

We waited to takeoff for about 1 hour delay for a 20 min flight.

Packed in like sardines, very uncomfortable. Sitting the aisle my shoulder was rammed into numerous times by rushing flight attendants. Also flight was very cold.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

I was happy to be seated with my teen daughter. On my arrival flight we were not together. Drink choices were great. Food was ok. Lots of entertainment options. Pilot communicated well and gave us a heads up about wind and turbulence. Made it less anxious.

Overall it was good. The flight was bumpy at times, but the pilot made us aware every time. As a result, no snacks/drinks were made available. Seats were tight but that’s okay as I had a window seat.

the head jack on my seat didn't work and the power outlet didn't work for my seat

The crew’s attitud was not good, only worried for pilot’s comfort, so I ask myself why do I pay so much for so less. The plane is old and broken. I will rey another airline

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

Boarding process was well organized and orderly even though flight was fairly full. Water bottles were provided during boarding which was great as I drink a lot of water. Bathroom was not as clean as it could have been but was acceptable and fairly dry. Food however was mediocre. I have had better food on 2 hour local flights in other countries.

Honestly, best experience I've had with an airline in recent memory. Flight was on time, comfortable seats, snacks and entertainment was top notch.

I really did not like being ordered to pull my shade down by the attendants. One of them was very rude to me about it, standing there until I closed it like I was a child brusquely reaching across me to close an adjoining one. They claim it was so people who wanted to could sleep. It’s a 10:30am flight not a red eye. Closing your shade or leaving it up for natural light should be a choice. Ruined my flight!

My baggage did not arrived with me. Took 3 days to get it after so may calls and follow up

The crew was very attentive and kept busy serving a variety of treats!

Terrible. Flight was 3 hours delayed and I missed my other flight to my final destination

Offered vegetable curry when it was actually tofu which I don’t care for.

The flight was good the crew excellent…but take off delayed three hours!!!

Both mine and my husband's chairs were broken. Also it took 2 hours to get our bags after our flight which was wild.

perhaps eye contact with the cabin crew, instead of abruptness and an impatience to serve.

Not enough trash pickups throughout the flight. Everything else was great.

Overall good, the gluten free food is very hit/miss though and you must tell them you have an allergy days in advance.

Ok, but no entertainment. Left late, but made up most of the time.

May be it is not an ITA issue, but the bags took long time to go out.

Good. But there food was poor quality and 95% of movies didn't have English subtitles

I thought they had rebranded themselves in every aspect but it was quite the opposite. The food was terrible the service was sub-par. Overall it was not a good experience.

Service from staff was poor, food choices were limited. Air plane was not clean or hygienic and seemed like not cleaned for days. Seats were uncomfortable.

service from stAff was barely there , food choices were limited. AirPlane was not clean and seemed like it was not cleaned for days.. Seats were very uncomfortable.

I paid for premium seats and the last minute they changed the aircraft for a bigger one, they bumped me to another seat which was NOT at all comfortable for an 11 hour flight, will fight for a refund!!

The landing was catastrophic. I was very scared. I thought it were my last lminues. Pilotes should be more experienced

ALL services were good. An announcement should’ve been made at the end of the flight that filling out a customs form would not be necessary anymore for USA travelers entering Philadelphia.

The flight was smooth, the premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were excellent. The on board food, however, was AWFUL. I suggest bringing your own food on board.

Live updates, the one shocking mistake that led to us tourist rene remund’s staggering $143k bill.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A US tourist has revealed the moment he received a bill of six figures after a short holiday to Switzerland went horribly wrong.

Rene Remund and his wife Linda made the trip last September, a journey the pair had been on previously given it’s where he is originally from.

As always, Remund ensured his mobile phone provider was notified of his travels, by going in-store to share his overseas movements. He said that as a customer of 30 years, he was told he was “covered.”

Rene Remund got a pleasant surprise in the mail that turned out to be a massive bill from his European holiday.

But while enjoying the Swiss countryside and sharing some of the magical sights of his trip via photo messages to friends and family, not once did Remund think these texts could be racking up thousands and thousands in daily roaming costs.

After returning home and receiving his T-Mobile bill, Remund thought it was for $143 which he thought to be “reasonable.”

“I get this T-Mobile bill and it doesn’t bother me very much because I was reading $143,” he explained, adding it wasn’t until he went to pay the bill that he realized a few more zeros were involved.

Rene Remund's T-Mobile phone bill of 143,442.74 is shown.

“I look at the bill and I say, ‘Excuse me’,” he said.

“$143,000.00 … are you guys crazy?”

According to the mobile phone bill, Remund racked up 9.5 GB of data while in Europe, costing him thousands of dollars each day.

Never miss a story.

And while 5-10GB isn’t considered a large amount of data, not being covered by roaming fees will cause a user to run up thousands of dollars very quickly.

“I called [T-Mobile] and the girl put me on hold for a while,” he explained.

“She said let me check this out and I’ll get back to you. She gets back and says, yeah this is a good bill.

Rene Remund could not beleive the massive bill amount, telling T-Mobile they were "crazy."

“I said, ‘What do you mean it’s a good bill?’ And she says ‘Well, this is what you owe.'”

“I said ‘You’re kidding me … you’re crazy.'”

Following confirmation his bill was to the value of around $143,000.00 — Remund hired a lawyer to argue the fact he was “covered” for international roaming to avoid such “exorbitant” charges.

T-Mobile said Rene Remund racked up 9.5 GB of data while in Europe, costing him thousands of dollars each day.

His lawyer issued a letter to the president of T-Mobile, for which no reply was given until just a few days ago.

The letter from T-Mobile allegedly said that the service provider was “sorry” for the charges and that Remund would receive a “credit” to eliminate the entire phone bill.

In an email issued to local media Scripps News Tampa, T-Mobile said that customers should always “check the travel features of their plan, such as international data roaming, before departing.”

“If a customer is on an older plan that doesn’t include international roaming for data and calling, they’ll need to make sure they’re using aeroplane mode and wi-fi when using data to be certain the device doesn’t connect to an international network.”

Last year, Melbourne activist and author Sally Rugg was slapped with a little over $720.00 fee two minutes after she touched down in London.
