Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the crowning glory of India’s tourism fetched over ₹9.5 crores in 2019-20, which was the highest revenue collection from a centrally protected historical building.

Taj Mahal or the 'monument of love' remains the highest revenue-generating monument in India. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said that it has collected nearly ₹132 crores from selling tickets at the monument in the last three years.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when all monuments and heritage sites were shut for months and had a restriction on the numbers of visitors, the crowning glory of India's tourism fetched over ₹9.5 crores in 2019-20, which was the highest revenue collection from a centrally protected historical building.

Contributes Nearly 24% Of ASI's Total Revenue

Earning from the Taj Mahal is nearly 24 per cent of total revenue generated by the ASI from the sale of entry tickets for three financial years from 2019 to 2022. In 2019-20, the income earned from the monument was ₹97.5 crores, whereas in 2021-22, it was ₹25.61 crores, The New Indian Express reported.

The ASI received additional ₹17.76 crores in the last three years with the sale of a separate entry permit costing ₹200 for the main mausoleum (marble enclosure), which houses replicas of the graves of the Mughal royalty. This new arrangement was introduced in December 2018.

The Survey manages and protects 3,693 monuments, including 143 ticketed sites, in the country.

All these protected sites and monuments were closed in March 2020 after the COVID-19 outbreak. After the pandemic subsided, the government opened heritage buildings, but some in containment zones remained closed for tourists.

Other Significant Revenue Grossers

Other significant revenue grossers are Red Fort and Qutub Minar in Delhi, which earned ₹6.01 crores and ₹5.07 crores, respectively, in 2021-2022. Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ASI's proceeds from 16th-century fort-palace in 2019-20 was ₹16.23 crore, and in 2020-21, it was ₹90 lakh.

The Survey earned ₹20.17 crore from selling tickets for Qutub Minar in 2019-20. During the pandemic year, the revenue from 12th-century brick minaret plummeted to ₹1.56 crore.

The Agra Fort, the Sun Temple at Konark, the group of monuments at Mamallapuram, Chittorgarh Fort, Khajuraho group of temples, Ellora Caves, Shaniwar Wada in Pune, Golconda Fort in Hyderabad and Humayun's Tomb in Delhi also featured in the list of the highest revenue generating heritage sites of ASI.

This Colossal Tomb Is an Enduring Monument to Love

According to legend, Shah Jahan's favorite wife bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful mausoleum ever known.

The Taj Mahal is widely considered one of the most beautiful buildings ever created. The exquisite marble structure in Agra, India, is a mausoleum, an enduring monument to the love of a husband for his favorite wife. It's also an eternal testament to the artistic and scientific accomplishments of a wealthy empire.

Shah Jahan, “the King of the World,” took control of the Mughal Empire throne in 1628 very much in love with the queen he dubbed Mumtaz Mahal or “Chosen One of the Palace.” The poets at Agra’s Mughal court said her beauty was such that the moon hid its face in shame before her.

The Mughals were at the peak of their power and wealth during Shah Jahan’s reign, and India’s rich lode of precious gems yielded him much wealth and power. But he was powerless to stop Mumtaz Mahal’s death during childbirth in 1631. Legend has it that she bound him with a deathbed promise to build her the most beautiful tomb ever known.

World Heritage Site Pictures: Taj Mahal

Promise or no, Shah Jahan poured his passion and wealth into the creation of just such a monument. It is said that 20,000 stone carvers, masons, and artists from across India and as far as Turkey and Iraq were employed under a team of architects to build the Taj Mahal in the lush gardens on the banks of Agra’s Jamuna River. They completed the epic task between 1631 and 1648.

While the arch-and-dome profile of clean white marble has become iconic, other beauties lie in the Taj Mahal’s painstaking details: inlaid semiprecious stones and carvings and Koranic verse in calligraphy create an enchanting interior space where Shah Jahan came to visit his wife’s remains before he was eventually interred at her side.

The Taj Mahal’s familiar marble domes are framed by four minarets from which Muslims are called to prayer. Each is designed with a slight outward lean, presumably to protect the main mausoleum in case one of them should collapse.

Two red sandstone buildings also flank the main mausoleum on either side. One, to the west, is a mosque. The other is a former guesthouse.

These buildings are set within lush gardens, complete with an enormous reflecting pool that regularly does what no human has ever been able to accomplish—duplicate the beauty of the Taj Mahal.

Shah Jahan himself gazed upon that beautiful image until the end of his days—but as a prisoner, not a ruler. His son Aurangzeb seized the Mughal throne and imprisoned his father in Agra’s Red Fort (itself a World Heritage site and popular tourist attraction). Whether as consolation or torture, Shah Jahan commanded a view of the Taj Mahal from his window.

How to Get There

Agra is a major city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and well accustomed to visitors—some three million people visit the Taj Mahal each year. The city is accessible by bus, train, and (limited) air service and has a wide range of tourist amenities. Access to the Taj Mahal complex is on foot.

When to Visit

The Taj Mahal is a year-round attraction and often busy, though new ticketing systems have thinned crowds at peak times. Visitors in search of more solitude might try coming early or late in the day. One time NOT to visit is on Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed.

Taj Mahal, Agra: A debate is going on, especially on social media, about the number of visitors and earnings of various tourist monuments in India including the Taj Mahal. Putting all speculations to rest, the union government told parliament about the revenue earned by the Taj Mahal in the last couple of years. Replying to a question by AIUDF’s Member of Parliament from Assam Badruddin Ajmal, Minister Of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel said that in the year 2018-19, the number of tourists visiting the Taj Mahal was 70,90,207 and the amount earned was Rs 86 crore 48 lakhs 93 thousand one hundred.

The breakup of the number of visitors and the revenue earned during the last five years from Taj Mahal is as follows:

– In the year 2014-15, the number visitors to Taj Mahal was 60,89,901 and earned revenue was at Rs 21,23,55,330 – In the year 2015-16, the number visitors to Taj Mahal was 50,70,573 and earned revenue was at Rs 17,92,27,050 – In the year 2016-17, the number visitors to Taj Mahal was 61,77,196 and earned revenue was at Rs 55,09,29,860 – In the year 2017-18, the number visitors to Taj Mahal was 65,65,627 and earned revenue was at Rs 58,76,04,981 – In the year 2018-19, the number visitors to Taj Mahal was 70,90,207 and earned revenue was at Rs 86,48,93,100

The above date shows a gradual increase in both the number of visitors and revenue earned from the Taj Mahal. While the number of visitors have only grown by around 10 lakh in last five years, the revenue earned has grown by over four-times in the last five years.

On the other hand, the amount spent on the conservation and maintenance of Taj Mahal which was at Rs 3,90,20,190 in 2014-15, has also increased to Rs 5,48,34,582 in 2018-19.

To a question from Ajmal on whether pollution is affecting the colour of Taj Mahal, the minister accepted that the effect of pollution is there. He added the Taj Mahal is cleaned periodically by appropriate cleaning methods. The process is done in accordance with archaeological norms and principles and is kept in presentable condition.

Taj Mahal, top destination for domestic tourists in 2021-22

The Taj Mahal, a UNESCO world heritage site, was among the 10 most popular ticketed monuments for domestic visitors in 2021-22, according to a new report released by the Union Ministry of Tourism. While the Mughal-era mausoleum ranked first, the Red Fort and the Qutub Minar — both UNESCO-recognised sites in Delhi — were the second and third most visited sites, respectively, for the period. The over 280-page report titled ‘India Tourism Statistics 2022’ was released on Tuesday by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on World Tourism Day.

The report said due to restrictions related to COVID-19, “the number of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India during 2021 decreased to 1.52 million as compared to 2.74 million in 2020, registering a negative growth of 44.5 per cent”.

Sharing data about the footfall at various sites under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the report said the Taj Mahal was the most popular centrally-protected ticketed monument for domestic visitors in 2021-22, while the Group of Monuments at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu was the most visited centrally-protected ticketed monument for foreign visitors during the same period.

According to data shared by the report, the Taj Mahal witnessed 3.29 million visitors or 12.65 per cent of the total footfall in 2021-22 for domestic visitors, followed by Red Fort (1.32 million) and Qutub Minar (1.15 million). As per foreign visitors, the Group of Monuments in Mamallapuram saw 0.14 million, followed by the Taj Mahal (0.038 million) and the Tiger -headed Rock cut and two other monuments, Saluvankuppam, (0.025 million), the report said, quoting ASI data.

In 2021-22, the total number of domestic visitors stood at 2,60,46,891, while the corresponding figure in 2020-21 was 1,31,53,076, marking a 98 per cent on-year growth. The total number of foreign visitors for 2021-22 was 3,18,673, declining 23.4 per cent on year from 4,15,859 in 2020-21, according to the data.

There are 3,693 heritage sites in India protected by the ASI. Many of these are UNECSO world heritage sites such as the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, Qutub Minar and the Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi and the ruins of the ancient Nalanda university in Bihar.In 2020, ASI sites were shut for over four months due to COVID-19 and reopened in July with safety protocols in place.

Tourist Footfall, Revenue Collection for Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Other Monuments Hugely Hit By Pandemic

In 2019-20, there were around 5 crore visitors at the centrally protected ticketed monuments while the footfall went down to 1.19 crore in the year 2020-21 that was marred by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ticket sales at monuments, including Taj Mahal, Red Fort and Ajanta and Ellora Caves fell hugely from Rs 336 crore in 2019-20 to a little over Rs 40 crore in the year 2020-21 that saw lockdown restrictions and travel bans due to the Covid-19 pandemic, data from the Ministry of Culture showed.

In 2019-20, there were around 5 crore visitors at the centrally protected ticketed monuments while the footfall went down to 1.19 crore in 2020-21 that was marred by the Covid-19 pandemic. As compared to 2018-19, the number of tourists dropped by about 78% and revenue collection fell by over 87% in 2020-21, according to the ministry’s data analysed by CNN-News18.

Monuments shut for over two months in 2021 causing loss of Rs 35 crore

As the country was fighting the second wave of Covid-19 in April-May, the monuments were closed for 61 days from April 16 to June 15 in which the government incurred a loss of Rs 35.40 crore, according to the ministry’s statement in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The ministry said the calculation was based on revenue lost due to lack of sales of tickets.

For Category ‘A’ monuments such as Ajanta and Ellora Caves, the Indian citizens, visitors from SAARC and BIMSTEC countries and overseas citizens of India pay up to Rs 40 each. However, for Red Fort in Delhi, a Category ‘A’ monument that is also a UNESCO World Heritage, the entry fee is Rs 50 per head.

While everyone else visiting the Category ‘A’ monuments and are not from the listed countries will have to shell out Rs 600. Also, for entry to the main Mausoleum of Taj Mahal, Rs 200 per head for all categories of visitors is required in addition to the existing entry fee.

Similarly, for Category ‘B’ monuments such as Gwalior Fort, Indians and visitors from SAARC and BIMSTEC countries and overseas citizens of India pay Rs 25 and other foreign tourists fork out Rs 300.

India has 3,693 centrally protected monuments; most in UP

Across India, there are 3,693 centrally protected monuments, with most being in Uttar Pradesh. The state has 743 centrally protected monuments followed by Karnataka (506) and Tamil Nadu (412). Nagaland (four), Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim (three each), and Manipur and Mizoram (one each) are at the other end of the spectrum.

Between 2014 and 2019, 17 monuments were added to the list of centrally protected monuments, including the Old High Court Building in Maharashtra’s Nagpur that was added in 2018.

Huge fall in foreign tourists’ arrival in India in 2021

Nearly four lakh tourists arrived in India up to May 2021 as compared to 24.72 lakh for the same period in 2020. The Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs), which dropped drastically in March-April 2020 amid the global Covid outbreak, started increasing gradually in the later part of 2020. In November 2020, 70,977 FTAs and in December, 90,544 FTAs were recorded in India.

The Taj Mahal and 4 other monuments earned Rs 146.05 crore, more than half the total revenue generated by centrally-protected monuments, in 2017-18.

New Delhi:  Fringe Hindu groups and even some BJP leaders may have sought to belittle their significance but official data shows that India’s top five revenue generating monuments were all built by Muslim rulers – the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Qutub Minar, Fatehpur Sikri and Red Fort.

While Qutub Minar was built by rulers of the Delhi Sultanate, the rest were constructed by the Mughals.

These five monuments together earned the government Rs 146.05 crore in 2017-18, according Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) data. This is more than half the total revenue of Rs 271.8 crore generated by all centrally-protected monuments.

The Taj Mahal, which has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent years, with the Supreme Court last month pulling up the ASI for its poor maintenance, continued to be the highest earner at Rs 56.83 crore.

While some politicians sparked a controversy last year by arguing that the Mughal-era monument did not represent Indian culture, the number of visitors to it, both Indian and foreign, only increased since 2016-17.

A total of 64.58 lakh people visited the Taj Mahal in 2017-18 compared to 50.66 lakh in 2016-17.

Last year, the UP tourism department had even omitted the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO world heritage site, from a brochure listing the state’s principal attractions.

With total earnings of Rs 30.55 crore, Agra Fort built by Mughal emperor Akbar, another UNESCO world heritage site, was the second highest revenue generator in the last financial year.

While the Konark Sun Temple in Odisha came second after the Taj Mahal in terms of number of visitors (32.3 lakh), it generated only Rs 10.06 crore as revenue. This, officials said, is because the temple is mostly popular only with Indian tourists, with 32.21 lakh domestic visitors making the trip last year.

While Indian tourists are charged Rs 30 per head as entry fee to world heritage monuments across the country, foreign tourists have to pay Rs 500 each.

“It is impossible to communalise the entire Indian population through the meaningless political venom spewed by politicians,” said historian S. Irfan Habib, explaining the increase in visitors to the Taj.

“No matter what they say about the Taj Mahal and Red Fort, Indians will continue going there,” he added.

the amount collected is rather small, and mainly due to the taj mahal’s proximity, since foreign visitors go on the “taj circuit” – meaning they do the package tour of taj mahal, agra fort, fatehpur sikri and qutab minar/delhi/red fort. The problem here is that the taj mahal is a bit overhyped and many other ancient monuments are undersold/neglected. Indian archeology and museums have done a very poor job.

Quite well known that Qutub Minar was built after demolishing 25+ temples and even the secular Marxist historians agree to this. This about it, if the Hindu temples were not broken by the Muslims, there are chances that they would have defeated these so-called monuments.

Nobody would come for those copy-paste temples. Tourists only come to see Qutub Minar because it is different.

Why is the author bringing in religion in this article? Is it being done to please Muslims? If crediting Muslim rulers for building these monuments is being done, then the author should complete the truth, not say half truths. Built by Hindu rulers, Tirupati generates 50 times more revenue than Taj Mahal and 18 times more than all those monuments put together But Tirupati is not enlisted under protected monuments. It is taken over by Secular Indian Govt to squeeze money and loot ancient heritage, and use kafir money for secular use.

The total revenue generated by all these do not equal to one week or one month’s collection made at Tirumala Thirupathi Devasthanam.

World is moving in fast rate with swift developments. We still staggering over with past achievements done by the olden times worrying about credits being given to the emperors or kings who were the creators of such monuments with jealousy overlooking the foreigners appreciations for our nation which are our nation’s proud possessions. Recently the minds of present generation is being corrupted to generate hatred on past rulers and leaders of India. Indian culture whether based on Hinduism or Islamic principles are the assets of our nation which bring fame and revenue to our nation’s ruling governments. Keeping this in consideration our country was made secular in nature. Let us not forget foreigners who come on tourism to our nation not to visit religious places but to see the coultural activities and monuments that does not attached to religion base.

In her eagerness to introduce religion in the subject of inbound tourism, the author either forgets or overlooks two facts: (1) all five listed in the article form a part of the golden triangle that is a brand in itself. Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Red Fort earn top bucks because of the pull of Taj Mahal, (2) Mughals ruled India for almost 250 years, and that too in not too distant past, and with the exception of Qutab Minar, these monuments are relatively new and well-preserved. That said, there is no doubt that Taj Mahal can be counted as one of the top three most beautiful man-made constructions.

This headline could very well be that red stone monuments gain more revenue than white stones. Local and International tourists don’t visit these place because these were made by Muslims. Tourists visit these places because of the architecture beauty, ease of access, reputation, and history. Author is unnecessarily bringing in religion.

Correct !! Our Eminent historians ( distortians ) promoted only these in History books. There are countless temples in the South which are fit to be wonders of the world. Plus .. the so called “Mughal built monuments” .. how many of these were really built by Mughals ? Or were they usurped from original Indian rulers ?

Centuries after too the monuments built by Muslim rulers are filling the coffers of public government by substantial revenue. People still say these kings have looted Bharat, a non-nonsensical allegation. They did not go anywhere. They left everything to the nation what all they accumulated while ruling, unlike Europeans who looted, the industrial revolution in Britain could come out from this loot. The GDP of British people dramatically increase after the East India Company started ruling. Even the British Crown did not stop looting. To-day, to some, these looters are bosom friend and those who enhanced the wealth and importance are enemies. Sher Shah Suri gave Bharat the Science of Survey and land management. Allauddin Khilji gave Bharat the rules of minimum price of agricultural produce, which is the HOT problem of THIS day. Moghal and others have brought structural technologies and gave Bharat the monuments that it can rightly BOAST. They lived , died and buried in Bharat. They join the live society, integrated themselves, adopted local culture, they learnt Indian Art, Culture, religion and disseminated the Vedic literature, presented religious liberalism and in fact they were more INDIAN than those who helped the Britishers to continue as rulers. Let us do some soul searching and give proper place to the people who developed and also a proper place to those who looted the ” golden bird” who are responsible for created artificial famine in Bengal and cause death to lakhs of poor. In the words of Honorabel PM Modi ” Sharam karo, Doob maro.”
