The 1975 are back at, by their own admission, their very best.

The influential pop-rock group, comprising Matty Healy, George Daniel, Adam Hann and Ross MacDonald, are taking their 2022 Number 1 album Being Funny In A Foreign Language on tour across the UK and Ireland this summer.

Their fifth-consecutive Number 1 LP in the UK, Being Funny In A Foreign Language saw Matty and co. team up with producer du jour Jack Antonoff for a body of work that sticks to the band's core '80s-inspired sound, deepening it in interesting new directions.

MORE: Where every The 1975 song and album charted in the UK

See the setlist for the tour in full below. The show takes tracks from each of the band's respective eras - their influential eponymous debut, 2016 mainstream pop breakthrough I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, 2018's analytical A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships and 2020 scattershot Notes On A Conditional Form.

It seems like you're in for a real treat each night at the tour too, with Matty's performances frequently going viral. What will he do this time? Kiss a fan? Maybe eat some raw meat again? Bring out Taylor Swift again?

Always keeping us on our toes, that one.

Matty Healy sings with whiskey in one hand a cigarette in the other.

A glass of whiskey in one hand, a cigarette in the other.

Other than a few aimless rambles between sets, British indie-pop-rock frontman Matt Healy’s message was clear: The 1975 is no less relevant in 2023 than they were in 2013 and the band’s performance at Madison Square Garden was a testament to their continued musical gifts.

Fans poured in with cult-like rage for a Tuesday night, some bearing rectangular tattoos of the band’s album cover, others still half-dressed in work clothes, taking no chance of missing the man who teased a “indefinite hiatus” after they wrap their ‘Still… At Their Very Best’ tour .

The crowd – a hodgepodge of teenage girls, married couples, and some likely single wannabe-groupies – was certainly buzzing. Healy’s closest followers live for his controversies. There was his fervent fling with Taylor Swift over the summer, and then a social media reckoning over offensive podcast remarks . Not to mention, his history of pulling fans on stage for a slobbery smooch (he skipped the make-out sessions for this show).

But, nothing lasts forever, as Healy has taught us. Attention quickly turned to the opener, rising star Dora Jar. The 27-year-old has an celestial, airy voice that melts down arena. Yet, her stage presence couldn’t be further from ghostly. You could hear a pin drop as she breathed into the microphone and sang like the calm before a storm.

That storm was Healy, banging through a door and grabbing his guitar, much to the excitement of the roaring crowd. He glided around the floor effortlessly – an unpretentious set designed like an unfinished bachelor pad loft complete with sporadically placed furniture and a spiral staircase to nowhere. Lead guitarist Adam Hann, bass player Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel, took their places.

Healy and co. opened with a hit from their fourth studio album, “The 1975.” The eponymous song drew its lyrics from a speech given by environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, on civil disobedience. “Looking for Somebody to Love” played like a masterpiece; commanding and confident. The crowd then cheered for “Part of the Band,” a playful rock serenade broken up by an epic saxophone interlude. It was impossible to resist chiming along for “You Look So Cool” before Healy took down the volume and brought on an unexpected guest.

Everyone fell silent watching Healy’s 71-year-old father, Tim, step onto the stage. The retired English actor settled right in, hardly as impressed with himself as the crowd was, and began singing “All I Need to Hear” (with enough bravado to humble his own singer son). The slow jam was an unexpected turn from the punkier side of the evening, playing like a desperate love song with romantic lyrics “Cause it all means nothing, my dear If I can’t be holding you near” sticking in your ear. Outstretched arms from the crowd waved shining lights for the surprise guest.

But the show was not over. Spotlight turned back to what appeared to be Healy, but was actually a replica of his naked body stretched out on a turf platform on the other side of the arena. An eerie piano melody reverberated through the Garden as the real Healy rose through the platform to lay intimately beside his doppelgänger. The whole scene looked like something out of a dream – or nightmare – or psychedelic trip.

Healy disappeared through the grass and then reappeared, this time, with his guitar to sing “Be My Mistake.” A montage of fast-paced clips ran across the screen – TikTok’s, YouTube vids, and of course, outlandish tweets about the Proud Boys and Florida. The singer has not been shy expressing his political views, specifically his abomination of far right-wing content.

As the groove faded, the rockstar rolled into his final stunt of the night – what appeared at first to be a genuine apology for some of his mystifying antics. “I think it’s important to take inventory of yourself,” Healy shouted between swigs. “I apologize to those people and I pledge to be better moving forward.” He made a snuffy note about not being taken too literally, before adding, “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to better yourself…” as he made his impassioned plea, an ad for the popular online therapy service, Better Help, was projected behind him with the message “75% off your first session. Use the code Sorry75.”

And in classic Matt Healy-fashion, it was all an act. “I’m only joking,” the singer cackled, before the screen wiped away. Healy continued unfazed, jerking his head up-and-down to rock out to the night’s final anthems, “I love it if we made it,” and “People.” The lights flashed off at 10:30, and The 1975 dropped their instruments as if to say, we don’t need to impress anyone. Why? Because they’re still… at their very best.

Final verdict

If you’re considering buying tickets to one of their final shows, do so now. The set is an angsty, ethereal mind trip, staging is top-notch, and Healy’s shock factor does not disappoint. Ticket prices won’t break the bank either (the vodka lemonade and sweatshirt cost more than my seats).

In fact, some of them are only $6 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Yes, really.

Still on the fence? Don’t forget that the band has no indication of when they will be back on stage.

The 1975 Tour – Special Guests, Setlist & More

the 1975 tour 2023 setlist

It has been one of the most talked about music tours for a long time, and as The 1975 ‘s latest run of UK dates draw to a close, we take a look at last week’s AO Arena show in Manchester to detail what you can expect at the upcoming Liverpool, Dublin, and Belfast shows.

Their latest record, Being Funny In A Foreign Language , exceeded our expecations. More killer, less filler, would be a good analogy in comparison to its predecessor, and further evidence that this is a band at the peak of their powers, and potentially UK indie’s next Glastonbury headliner.

From kissing fans and sucking thumbs to Taylor Swift guest appearances and eating raw meat on stage, this tour has offered up everything from the spectacular to the downright weird. However, as divisive and provocative as Matty Healy and The 1975 may appear to be, their unquestionable talent as a band always shines through. Here is what to expect from the live shows…

the 1975 tour 2023 setlist

Firstly, as many fans will know from the widely shared clips from live shows, the stage aesthetics are wonderfully unique and creative, depicting the kind of chilled out lounge area you’d expect to see when checking into the Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. The 1975 have always been innovative in the production of their records, and now this is also reflected artistically in their live performances.

The show is split into two distinct sections, opening with a Being Funny In A Foreign Language tour arrangement, followed by At Their Very Best , stacked with popular hits and old favourites. The fist six tracks from the latest record are reflected in the opening six songs of the setlist, with About You and When We Are Together closing the first section after a Charlie Chaplin cover (Smile) , Sincerity is Scary , fallingforyou , and I Like America & America Likes Me . Manchester was also treated to the infamous raw meat ‘consumption’ segment, which followed Healy’s questionable antics on the couch (if you know, you know).

As if he hadn’t been eating enough, Matty was also delivered a Greggs , as a sausage roll was thrown onto the stage by a fan. Clearly not as tasty as the slab of meat Healy has been feasting upon like a scene from the tiger enclosure at Chester Zoo, he takes just one bite and moves on with the show, re-assured by the crowd that it hadn’t been tampered with…

the 1975 tour 2023 setlist

Taylor Swift joined the band on stage in London, and rumours had been circling about a potential Harry Styles cameo in Manchester. However, it was the wonderfully talented pop sensation, Charli XCX , who entered stage between the two sections of the show. Fans were treated to a performance of Vroom Vroom , before the At Their Very Best segment commenced.

The final section of the show saw The 1975 come into their own, playing hits from their extensive back catalogue such as Chocolate , If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) , It’s Not Living (If It’s Not With You) , and The Sound . Fan favourite, Robbers , and Somebody Else brought the feels to the sold out AO Arena , and fans were treated to the viral “menthol” section of TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME , much to the satisfaction of the crowd.

One of the highlights of the show was the unexpected run-out for Menswear , a tour debut and firm favourite from the band’s early days. The set was closed off with popular hits, Sex and Give Yourself A Try , unsurprisingly creating a special energy from both the band and the crowd, a result of this unique bond between the Wilsmlow four-piece and their army of loyal fans.

the 1975 tour 2023 setlist

The 1975 and Matty Healy may not be to everybody’s tastes and regularly come in for unfair criticism, but the Manchester show and arena tour as a whole has showcased why this band deserves every success on the global stage.

As a frontman, Healy’s showmanship and talent as a musician and performer is clear for all to see. Combine this with the creative minds that The 1975 possess in-house, and there is good reason they are now major festival headliners and heavily rumoured for that coveted Pyramid Stage headline slot .

If you haven’t already, they are undoubtedly one of the UK’s must-see bands right now . And if you are heading to any of the remaining dates, you are in for a treat!

The 1975

The 1975 has announced the “Still… At Their Very Best” fall tour, the band’s biggest North American tour to date. The Matty Healy-led group will take their fifth album, “Being Funny in a Foreign Language,” across the U.S. and Canada for the second time since its October 2022 release.

The tour will kick off Sept. 26 in Sacramento, Calif., and end Dec. 2 in Seattle.

The band had teased the tour on social media throughout the month, posting vague visuals and linking to an online registration form.

Popular on Variety

The tour evolved throughout its initial North American run, from altered setlists to surprise guest cameos from Phoebe Bridgers and Bleachers. Healy made headlines for bringing fans onstage during “Robbers” and passionately kissing them.

Variety praised the band’s latest performance at Madison Square Garden , calling the concert a “captivating exposition from a band that embraces nearly every pop trope yet demands to be taken seriously.” The band will return to the famed New York City venue on Nov. 14.

A fan presale begins June 21 at 10 a.m. local time, while public tickets will go on sale June 23 at 10 a.m. on the 1975’s website .

In other The 1975 news, Healy recently responded to Noel Gallagher’s comments about him at a 1975 show in Dublin last week (June 7).

“Noel Gallagher called me a ‘slack-jawed fuckwit’… I love Noel Gallagher. We asked Liam to open up and he said he would have done it but he was busy,” he told the crowd.

“But I love Noel Gallagher… He’s just getting on,” he added. “The difference between me and Noel is that I do a series of interviews to promote an album, whereas he does an album to promote a series of interviews. But we love you Noel. Get Oasis back together!”

At the show, Healy also acted as the support slot for his own band, after  Caroline Polachek pulled out at the last minute due to losing her voice .

In his stripped-back solo set, he performed covers of ‘I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You’ by Colin Hay, and Donny Hathaway’s ‘A Song For You’, which was performed alongside touring guitarist Jamie Squire. He also  performed the live debut of their song ‘Then Because She Goes’ .

T he 1975 began their Still… At Their Very Best Tour in September and it seems that fans have been enjoying every minute of their shows.

Fans have been treated to exciting performances of their hit songs like “The 1975,” “Be My Mistake” and “Looking For Somebody To Love.” They weren’t the only ones onstage, though, as they also have up-and-coming singer Dora Jar join them as their opener for many of their shows.

At their Madison Square Garden stop, frontman Matty Healy welcomed his father, Tim , up on the stage, where he sang the band’s song “All I Need To Hear.”

The tour follows the 1975’s previous tour, At Their Very Best, which began in November 2022 and ended in August this year. Still…At Their Very Best is set to end in March 2024, making it almost two years of back-to-back concerts.

It comes as no surprise that Healy has suggested a break after their tour ends next year.

“After this tour, we will be going on an indefinite hiatus with shows,” Healy said during an Instagram Live.
