Airport delays can be one of the more frustrating things about the holiday season. When a group of strangers find their holiday plans grounded, they decide to go on an adventure in Holiday Road . Holiday Road is one of the latest Hallmark Christmas movies in the 2023 Countdown to Christmas. 

Holiday Road joins Letters to Santa , Christmas in Notting Hill , Haul Out the Holly: Lit Up , Our Christmas Mural and A Biltmore Christmas , which all debut on Thanksgiving weekend.

Here's the synopsis of Holiday Road from Hallmark Channel: "Nine strangers, stranded at an airport during the holidays, unite for a Christmas road trip to Denver. Misadventures lead to unexpected bonds and heartfelt conversations."

Sarah Canning plays Dana in Holiday Road . She's probably best known for her role as Jenna Sommers on The Vampire Diaries . She's also had appearances in Smallville , Kyle XY and 9-1-1 . She's held leading roles in Paparazzi Princess: The Paris Hilton Story and Slap Shot 3 . Canning is a familiar face around the Hallmark Channel, having starred in Christmas at the Golden Dragon and Come Dance at My Wedding . 

Warren Christie plays Clay in Holiday Road . Christie is a Hallmark Channel frequent flyer, appearing in popular movies like Crashing Through the Snow , The Most Wonderful Time of the Year and The More Love Grows . He's also played a lead role in October Road , and he had a recurring role in Happy Town as well as a guest role in Flashpoint .

Holiday Road is a Hallmark Channel original movie. If you miss the premiere, you can catch it on demand the following day if you have cable.

Hallmark’s Holiday Road: Filming Locations and Cast Revealed

Helmed by director Martin Wood, ‘Holiday Road’ is a story inspired by true events, following 9 co-passengers whose flight to Denver is grounded due to bad weather. Dana (Serah Canning), a travel writer, makes an ingenious suggestion of renting a van and traveling by road to Denver together. Her co-passengers, now fellow travelers, agree. They include a diverse set of personalities – a mother and her impatient son, a social media influencer, a tech entrepreneur, a couple, and a grumpy old man.

Not long after the merry band sets off, they encounter unknown territories and have to navigate a series of obstacles, bringing them closer and changing some of their lives. Witnessing their lively journey and the locations they stop at along the way, you may wonder if the filming actually took place on the route from Portland to Denver.

Where Was Holiday Road Filmed?

‘Holiday Road’ was largely filmed in and around Vancouver City in the province of British Columbia on the western coast of the Great White North. Shooting for the Hallmark Movie was carried out in early September of 2023. Let us take a look at the specific locations which set the scenes for the production.

Vancouver, British Columbia

The bustling port city of Vancouver has played the part of Portland, Denver, and everywhere in between for ‘Holiday Road.’ The city is a Hallmark favorite when it comes to filming destinations, as it offers a diverse landscape along with top-of-the-line filming studios. One such studio was used for its sound stage to simulate the road trip taken by our travel party. The city has additionally seen the filming of previous Hallmark movies like, ‘ Christmas in Canaan,’ ‘Royal New Year’s Eve,’ ‘The Christmas Secret,’ ‘Write Before Christmas,’ ‘The Christmas House,’ and ‘Five Star Christmas.’

The Portland airport shown at the beginning of the film was actually Vancouver International Airport, with a few switched-up signs. The airport is located on Sea Island in Richmond, and has also been featured as a backdrop in films such as ‘ Supernatural ,’ ‘ Final Destination ,’ ‘ Good Luck Chuck ,’ ‘ Passengers ,’ and ‘Firewall.’

The actors seemed to have had an especially good time filming ‘Holiday Road,’ with many of them speaking of their positive experiences on social media. Enid-Raye Adams who plays Tricia talks about the actors being given plenty to work with in the storyline, and rolling around laughing even off camera. Sharon Crandall, who plays Lei Ling talked about the extraordinary experience on Instagram, saying, “What a time we had together for three weeks this summer. We cried, we laughed, we (almost) puked and we sweated. Boy, did we sweat. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Holiday Road Cast

The film features an ensemble of talented actors, with Sara Canning and Warren Christie as Dana and Clay being the romantic center and having a number of Hallmark titles under their belts. Sara is known especially for her performance in ‘ The Vampire Diaries ’ as Jenna Sommers, ‘ War for the Planet of the Apes ’ as Lake, ‘Remedy’ as Melissa Conner and ‘ A Series of Unfortunate Events’  as Jacquelyn.

Warren Christie is an Irish actor and producer; you may have seen him in ‘Apollo 18’ as Ben Anderson, ‘This Means War’ as Steve, ‘Alphas’ as Cameron Hicks and ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ as Morgan Derby. Other cast members include Princess Davis as Maya Way, Kiefer O’Reilly as Ben, Enid-Raye Adams as Tricia, Sharon Crandall as Lei Ling, Trevor Lerner as Dusty Redford, Brittany Willacy as Ember Craig, Laura Mitchell as Beth, Benita Ha as Ming, Kayla Deorksen as Sarah and Simon Chin as Santa.

T he Hallmark Channel’s newest Christmas movie, “Holiday Road,” premieres on Friday, November 24, at 8 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Central. It’s the second in a two-part lineup of new Friday movies for Thanksgiving weekend. The movie stars Sara Canning and Warren Christie. ‘Holiday Road’ Was Filmed in Vancouver, Canada

Hallmark “Holiday Road”

“Holiday Road” was filmed in the Vancouver region of Canada. Brittany Willacy, who stars as Ember, shared on Instagram that she traveled from Portland to Denver in the movie via a Vancouver soundstage.

Princess Davis, who stars as Maya in the movie, shared her work behind the scenes, and tagged Vancouver in her post.

She also posted a selfie in front of her trailer in Vancouver, revealing that the movie had been filmed in early September.

Enid-Raye Adams, who plays Trisha in the movie, wrote in a post about how amazing it was to be part of the movie.

Adams said: “Not gonna lie. This one is special. @ginamariamatthews and Grant Scharbo wrote a funny, heartbreaking and beautiful script. Every single one of us in this massive cast were given opportunities to sink our teeth into storylines that left me weeping or belly laughing off camera. What a joy it was to watch these fantastic actors absolutely knock it outta the park in every scene.”

Trevor Lerner, who stars as Dusty, wrote: “It’s not a normal formula Hallmark movie. We did something epically different than ANYTHING Hallmark has ever done before. The second kicker is that we were originally scheduled for a Christmas release but Hallmark loved what we did so much that we got bumped up to their prime time slot on USA Thanksgiving. This night is their superbowl of holiday movies. I take that as a helluva good sign.”

When bad weather leaves each of them stranded at the airport for the holidays, a tech entrepreneur (Christie), a travel writer (Canning), a devoted mother (Enid-Raye Adams) and her son (Kiefer O’Reilly), a stubborn senior (Trevor Lerner), an enigmatic woman with a hint of mystery (Brittany Willacy), a couple traveling from Hong Kong (Sharon Crandall, Ryan Mah) and a social media influencer (Princess Davis) all agree to rent a shared van to embark on a road trip to Denver. When their unexpected journey brings them into uncharted territory, they navigate a series of misadventures together and form a deeper bond that just might change the trajectories of each of their lives. Warren Christie portrays Clay. According to his bio, he gained recognition for his prominent role in the Weinstein film, “Apollo 18,” and took on leading positions in various TV series, such as ABC’s “October Road” and “Happy Town.” Following these projects, he secured a lead role in “Alphas.”

More recently, Warren served as a lead in Freeform’s “The Watchful Eye,” NBC’s “The Village,” and USA Network’s “Eyewitness.” He also had substantial guest appearances on “The Catch” (ABC) and “The Resident” (FOX). Additional TV highlights include starring alongside Catherine Zeta Jones in the TV movie “Cocaine Godmother,” the QUIBI series “50 States of Fright,” a recurring role on The CW’s “Batwoman” as Bruce Wayne, and the Hallmark Channel original movie “Crashing Through the Snow.”

Of course, Christie is known for quite a few Hallmark movies and similar rom-coms, such as “The More Love Grows,” “If I Only Had Christmas,” “The Color of Rain,” and “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

Sara Canning portrays Dana. According to her bio, Canning boasts a career in film and TV with notable credits such as “The Vampire Diaries,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Big Sky,” the Emmy-nominated “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and “Remedy,” a series that earned her UBCP/ACTRA and Leo Awards. Her performance in the web series “Hospital Show” earned her a Canadian Screen Award nomination. She’ll also be appearing in the upcoming feature film “Sweetland,” set in her home province of Newfoundland. Beyond acting, Canning is actively involved as a director for the Vancouver Film School and is engaged in the development and writing of her own scripts, including a feature that was selected for the Whistler Film Festival Screenwriting Program in 2019.

Heavy traffic fails to cast shadow over eclipse travel experience: ‘It was 100% worth the trip’

A few hours after the total eclipse brought thousands of spectators to downstate illinois, traffic remained heavy on some interstates..

After viewing the spectacle that was a total solar eclipse in southern Illinois, some travelers were met with a less-incredible sight — bumper-to-bumper traffic.

The Illinois Department of Transportation estimated crowds of 100,000 to 200,000 would descend on prime viewing areas downstate ahead of the event, and told those making the trek to expect congestion.

A few hours after the eclipse reached totality in southern Illinois on Monday, IDOT said traffic remained heavy “in pockets along the length of I-57 northbound, north of Marion to Champaign, I-64 westbound west of Mt. Vernon to the Metro East St. Louis area, and all of I-24.”

Tom Purdy, 42, headed from his home in Janesville, Wisconsin, to Mount Vernon in southern Illinois.

He said the worst traffic heading home was south of Effingham, but overall he expected the traffic to only tack on an additional half an hour to the usual five-hour drive.

"It was 100% worth the trip," Purdy said.

He said he missed the total eclipse in 2017; he decided he would make the trip this year "one way or another," ending up in a park in Mount Vernon with a few hundred other spectators.

He said he'll be in his 60s when the next total eclipse graces North America in 2044, but he expects to make the trip again.

Jason Wright from Atlanta, Georgia, took a detour with his family to Marion on their road trip back home from a trip to St. Louis.

The trip from Marion to Atlanta was expected to take nine to 10 hours, but after a 50-mile stretch that took him three hours to get through, Wright expected the trip to take closer to 12 hours.

Despite the traffic, Wright said the experience was "spectacular."

"I don't have any regrets at this point, I'm glad we did it," Wright said. "Now, ask me at 1 o'clock this morning when I'm still an hour from home, I may think differently."

Chicago saw a partial solar eclipse, peaking at 2:07 p.m. with 94% coverage.

Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications encouraged spectators to take public transportation to viewing events around the city.

Okemos students take unforgettable trip to see the Great American Eclipse

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Being in the path of totality for a solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Some students from a school in Okemos took an unforgettable trip to see just that.

Millions of people from all over the world are expected to travel for this solar eclipse. At Kinawa Middle School, the day of totality started with an early morning bus ride, to Toledo Ohio.

“I’m feeling really excited. I’m really hyper because I went to the last solar eclipse in 2017, but I missed it because I was in the bathroom,” said 6th grader Silas Morehead.

14 charter buses, traveled over three hours through heavy traffic, arrived at Imagination Station. The school group consisted of over 750, enjoying the science museum and watch party antics before the real show gets started.

The yard slowly filled up with eclipse viewers, giddy with anticipation.

“It’s really cool, there’s a lot of crazy stuff. Stuff that breaks a lot of physics,” Alex Edgar, a Kinawa Middle Schooler said.

“I mean just the surreal-ness of it,” Tyler Bograkos, a Kinawa Middle Schooler, said.

The kids tried to soak it all in, before cheers erupted and the glasses came on.

“It was really cool,” Penelope Malkus said.

“It surprised me of how dark it got. It was like just before it got pitch black,” Elsie Ruonabarra said.

“I wasn’t expecting to see all the planets,” student Sofia Montie said.

“It was really dark, it felt like nighttime right before you’re about to go to bed,” said student Sofia Gawecki.

‘I wanted the 17-hour trip to go slower, not faster’: readers’ favourite European journeys

The excitement of the voyage itself grabbed our tipsters as they delighted in riding trains, ferries and buses across Europe to as far afield as Norway and Turkey

Ferry through the fjord, Albania

Instead of a four-hour road trip from Koman to Fierzë, relax and enjoy the Albanian fjords via the Drin River. We reversed on to the Berisha ferry , which takes 10 cars, plus foot passengers. Everyone sits on deck, regardless of the weather, to take in the views, which began with an incredibly straight white line high in the rock, showing the water level during the rainy season. The scenery was magnificent with forest-clad hills and high, rocky mountains with various coloured strata. Occasionally, a remote, isolated house could be seen. After two hours, we began spotting small tourist boats and hardy kayakers before arriving at Fierzë. Roy Messenger

White night delight on a Scandi ferry ride

One leisurely romantic trip I enjoyed last summer was an open-air deck passage across the Baltic Sea from Helsinki to Stockholm. Even better, the route is part of Interrail, so there is 30% off the €95 one-way fare on Tallink ferries. I was lucky enough to take it in June, so watched the sun set at 3am, and then rise a couple of hours later. This time in Scandinavia is known as “white nights”. To be on the water watching the setting sun cast its rays on the waves and the moonlight play with the ripples as a ship glides towards its destination, land lights twinkling in the distance, is magical. Following Theroux’s tracks across Europe to Istanbul

On a quest to replicate the European leg of Paul Theroux’s The Great Railway Bazaar, I travelled from the suburbs of Manchester to Istanbul. Using an Interrail global pass , I attempted to follow the route of the Venice Simplon-Orient Express. Slow trains, fast trains, communist-era trains and graffiti-covered trains got me to my destination (plus a small detour by bus). With stops in Lausanne and Zagreb and an overnight train from Sofia, I skirted the lakes of Geneva and Maggiore, drank a cool beer in alpine Austria and kept my head down through dystopian-feeling Serbia. I marvelled at the pastel yellow stations of Croatia and felt the wonderful glow as I walked out of Sirkeci station into the wild throb of Istanbul. Lee Hanvey

Lazing our way across the Aegean for market day

When I was on holiday in Kos last summer I treated my parents to a ferry trip to Datça in Turkey for the day. It was a 3 1/2 -hour (about €30) return trip. Chugging out of Kos harbour, the pleasant breeze on the Aegean, was welcome, taking the heat off scorching temperatures as we sat outside. Pulling into Datça, I was immediately knocked over by the serene harbour, hillside houses and white boats moored bobbing on the water. It was market day so we enjoyed a whiff of exotic local spices and were invited to drink brewed Turkish tea by sellers who were happy to chat to us and offer us figs and dates. One seller even gave us a lift back to the ferry in his open truck to help us carry a hand-woven rug we’d bought. A beautiful sun set and some simit (a twisted bread with sesame seeds), cheese and olives we’d been given helped the return trip pass peacefully. April

The best Belgrade train trip Bar none

The train trip from Belgrade to Bar must be one of the slowest in Europe, taking 11 hours to cover 296 miles, but to compensate it took me through some of the most dramatic scenery I’ve ever seen. Passing through deep gorges, canyons and mountain peaks, the train crossed more than 400 bridges and seemed to stop at every village. At one point it was overtaken by an old lady on a donkey. It’s best in summer when long daylight hours will allow you to appreciate its beauty. Peter

To Tropea, Italy, on the Coast of the Gods line

The train line from Pizzo to Reggio Calabria follows the Coast of the Gods, named for its turquoise seas, sheltered coves and rocky scenery. The train calls at Tropea (a town founded by Hercules in Greek mythology, that is more famous for onions), the castle and pretty beach of Scilla (of Scylla and Charybdis) and Reggio (home to lifesize ancient Greek bronze statues). Calabria makes a virtue of cucina povera , with wonderful vegetable dishes, and the local Bergamotto liqueur makes a great spritz. Sally

Two ferries to a car-free paradise. After boarding the Newcastle ferry to Amsterdam, I headed straight for the sun deck for a G&T. In Harlingen, farther north, another ferry took me in 1½ hours to the island of Vlieland. I cycled through the dunes to its endless sandy beaches. I enjoyed Kroon’s Polders, a birder’s heaven, where I spotted many spoonbills and a host of other birds. It’s so quiet. The small island has lots of cycle paths and the only village, Oost-Vlieland, has restaurants; Herbergh van Flielant was my favourite. Monique Gadella
