There hasn't been a show I have been to that I didn't leave completely drenched in sweat and sore for days after. It truly is an experience if you are a fan of them or just like a von guard music. The twins are super nice guys and usually one of them (I seriously can never tell which one and I feel dumb for asking) sticks around afterwards to take pictures and sign merch. If you are thinking of buying tickets just do it.

Absolute favorite band with the most best concerts. Great for a good mosh and/or stage dive. I've seen them 3 times and am still dreaming about seeing them again. Plus the twins are amazing and icons so highly recommend go to see the Garden, wear the craziest clothes you own, maybe spike your hair, and dance to incredible bass lines and synth; you will not regret it.

it was great lot of pushing and kicking, my friend punched a bitch, but other than that we had a lot of fun!! machine girl was kinda bad and scary and the guy spit fake blood on us; it got all over my pants and flannel and shoes, but leif and the garden were really good!! so it made up for the scary part

Wyatt jumped off the stage and fucking grabbed my hand and i died a little inside. I was right at the front so the view was sick, the crowd went mental though so they literally were pushing me up agaisnt the bars. The opening acts were cool and i actually listen to one now. Overall a great show

I had an amazing time. The setting was way better than their concert at the constellation room. The moshing was pretty intense, but not violent, which was nice. There was also enough room and seats to chill out when needed. The band's energy was great as usual, and very fan friendly.

I saw them at Tropicalia 2019, it was pretty crazy, my backpack got ripped open, I fell, got tossed in the pit, and left covered in sweat. Highly recommend seeing them live if you're down with super high energy crowds.

Small group tours of European gardens for couples and solo travellers.

From the Chelsea Flower Show to the tulips of The Netherlands, many European countries take pride in their horticulture. Visiting gardens, parks, and flower shows can make for a peaceful and fascinating trip, allowing you to discover a culture and its people through unusual means. Odyssey brings many expert guides on its collection of tours that focus on the European garden. This seeks to be a tour collection that captures the quintessential of Europe garden design each Northern hemisphere summer. This is a small group tour for the traveler interested in historic gardens. The small group guided tour are not just about the UNESCO World heritage site listed, but explore England’s historic gardens as well as the finest Italian gardens as well those gardens of France. Our European garden tours 2021 or 2022 and 2023 are now available to book.

The European garden tours 2021 are typically restricted to 12 people, a mix of couple and solo travelers in a small group tour with an itinerary and program leader (travel expert) suited to the mature/senior traveller who is a keen gardener or garden lover.

Gardens of The United Kingdom

For the mature and senior traveler Odyssey offers small group tours english gardens as an experience. The best gardens of England are often attached to equally wonderful country homes and castles. England’s historic gardens are often places that began as private gardens and are now managed by the National trust , such as Gertrude Jekyll’s beautiful garden at Sissinghurst located outside London in one of Kent’s picturesque villages. The Sissinghurst castle garden is one of most stunning gardens in England and is a must see for a garden lover on any english garden tour. The Alnwick secret Garden , for example, is adjacent to Alnwick Castle, an english stately home. It includes water features, an incredibly large wooden treehouse, and over 200 species of flowers. We visit there on the English Country Houses and Gardens Tour . What is also vital about this botanical garden is the collection from the plant kingdom of poisonous plants in the castle garden. On our Gardens of Ireland small group tour Odyssey visits another one of Europe Stately homes, Powerscourt with one of the finest gardens in Europe to walk around. This is one of Europe’s most splendid gardens. Powerscourt includes an Italian garden , a Japanese garden and Ireland’s highest waterfall at 121 metres!

A highlight of Odyssey’s small group tours english gardens and British Gardens is a visit to the The Chatsworth Royal Horticultural Show, the alternative to the Chelsea flower show. Because this is a new show, it aims to be revolutionary, and involves the work of sculptors and visual artists . Chatsworth not only has an amazing stately home but is a combination of formal garden and a Capability Brown landscape, regarded by many as a great garden , complete with more than one fountain, a water garden and a formal garden to enjoy. However, the scale is beyond the average domestic garden , so often our focus is on the plant mix and their approach to gardening to create such a great garden that is relatable to.

Gardens of France and Italy

Italy and France have a centuries-long history of cultivating the beautiful European garden and for garden lovers these tours to such remarkable gardens are a highlight of this escorted tour. Odyssey’s small group tour of Italian and French garden s journeys from garden visits to the Vatican’s garden s outside Rome to the Loire Valley in order to explore this history of garden design as part of its itinerary. Some of the best garden s in Italy a traveller’s guide are shared with members of this small group tour . This tour of Italy ‘s garden s focuses on Northern Italy rather than Southern I taly as we make our way through Tuscany to Florence and onto to France. The exquisite Vatican Gardens of Villa Lante, include a building constructed in 1558. This 16th century complex in the old town of Bagnaia, Viterbo was once used as the Pope’s hunting lodge and summer residence. The summer palace set up on the hills, is a feature of this Europe tour and is one of the finest garden s of Italy and France. Located near Florence , besides Villa borghese , the beautiful garden of Villa di Castello, once a Medici country residence, is an elegantly constructed garden with statuary and about 500 rare plant species. Also in Florence , you’ll find the magnificent Boboli garden , attached to the Pitti Palace, which were constructed between the 15th century and 19th century. They include the magnificent Neptune’s Fountain, an ampitheatre, and the Grotto Grande or Large Grotto, which includes key examples of mannerist sculpture.

During our visit to France on one of our escorted tours, the Chateau de Villandry in the Loire Valley provides an excellent example of a French chateau and its large accompanying formal gardens . The Chateau‘s website provides an excellent resource, showing you what to expect from the beautiful location. Odyssey’s tour finishes in Paris where we of course visit the Palace of Versailles. The tour also stops by the famous Roseraie de l’Hay, a gorgeous and historic rose garden a typical french garden , also in Paris we visit the formal gardens that make up the city park of Jardin de Luxembourg, and much more. Odyssey offers a garden tours France 2021 that includes Monet’s garden just outside Paris as well as a tour of Monet’s house.

Dear Garden Enthusiast,

Welcome to COOPERSMITH'S, North America's oldest and most trusted international garden and stately-home tour company, now in our 40th year of crafting One-of-a-Kind Tours® for the discerning traveler.

Over the years, people have asked me, “What made you decide to go into the tour business?” My answer, simply put, is that travel has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. Having grown up in New Jersey, some of my fondest childhood memories were the car trips our family took to places like Niagara Falls, Smokey Mountains, and Williamsburg. While in high school, I savored week-long bicycle tours in Nova Scotia and Martha’s Vineyard.

Later, while attending the University of California, Berkeley, I hitchhiked annually between West and East coasts. Upon graduating, I set out for Europe, where I thumbed my way around the Continent for six months before settling in London. In the ensuing three years, I researched and wrote a guide book for like-minded travelers ( Rule of Thumb: A Hitchhiker’s Handbook , Simon & Schuster, 1973).

Back in Berkeley, where I supported my travel habit by working for over ten years as a landscape gardener, contractor, and garden designer, I co-founded A Taste of Britain, later to be renamed COOPERSMITH'S One-of-a-Kind Tours®. My passion was, and still is, crafting unique, small-group, upscale garden and manor-house tours that I, myself, would feel comfortable being part of.

The following elements have always formed the foundation for those tours:

World-class tour leaders, with a minimum of ten years' experience in the field

Exceptional gardens, featuring private tours by owners and head gardeners

Small groups: as few as six and never more than 20 participants

Relaxed pace: on average, one visit in the morning, and one in the afternoon

Limited time on the motorcoach, with plenty of extra seats

In-depth focus on one or two regions of one country

Four-to-seven-nights in atmospheric country inns and manor-house hotels

Gourmet meals, often locally-sourced

Now, four decades later, we’re still going strong. Our tours typically fill up 12 to 18 months in advance. We have dozens of clients who travel with us on a regular basis, some up to two or even three times a year. I love what one of our clients once wrote on his feedback form: "Going on a COOPERSMITH'S tour," he said, "is like taking part in a traveling house party, focusing on beautiful homes and gardens, with Jeeves doing all the work!"

When people go on a COOPERSMITH'S tour, odds are they’ll be signing up for another one soon - sometimes even before finishing the one they’re on! Come join us in 2024 and help us celebrate our forty years in the business. And see for yourself what makes our tours truly One-of-a-Kind®!

Happy travels,

"A company that specializes in small groups [where members] are often taken to private gardens rarely seen..." — The New York Times

"My wife recently had the good fortune to meet and speak with [famous English horticulturalist] Penelope Hobhouse, who recommended your garden tour as one of the two best in Europe..." — Collier Espy, Jr., Dothan, Alabama

Arrive in Amsterdam and check into your hotel for four nights. The Grand Hotel Amrâth was built as HQ for a shipping company in 1916, an ornate confection of carved stone, marble, wrought iron and stained glass, with a maritime theme (mermaids, marine creatures, maps and the zodiac). A short walk will take you to Dam Square in the centre of the city. Be wary of bicycles; bike lanes are clearly marked with a bike symbol. This afternoon is free. Take a canal cruise, a gentle introduction to this chic city with its canals lined with red brick mansions and stately museums. Welcome dinner is included tonight the your hotel.

Grand Hotel Amrath , Amsterdam

A day of flowers and fragrance at Keukenhof. For sixty six years the world’s most beautiful flowering bulbs have been showcased in the gardens here for just two months. Carpets of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths beneath canopies of flowering cherries; its a sensual overload! The gardens are completely remade every year.

Three ornate glass pavilions are filled with flowers and potted plants. Towering floral exhibits fill the Oranje Nassau Pavilion. You will be reaching for the camera in the Willem-Alexander Pavilion with its polished display of tulips and lilies. Orchids, medinilla and anthuriums come together in an eye-watering display in the Beatrix Pavilion. The remainder of the day is free.

We’re up early this morning to get to Aalsmeer Flower Market in time to catch the action of the auction! From an elevated walkway, we can watch the world’s largest flower market at work as flowers are sold and shipped around the world. Hortus Bulborum is next, just outside Amsterdam in Limmen; a museum of antique bulb varieties. In addition to functioning as a gene bank, the garden is planted with thousands of heirloom bulbs, some of which are no longer in commercial production; some date back to the 16th century. Thanks to Pieter Boschman, who started the collection in 1924, you will see legendary tulips that were very popular during the Tulipmania (1635-1637) period.

This afternoon is free. Discover Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh at The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. It’s best to pre-book as queues can be long. Dam Square, Royal Palace and Anne Frank House (bookings recommended), are all within easy walking distance from your hotel.

Apeldoorn is our destination this morning, an hour out of Amsterdam, to visit Het Loo Palace, built for King William III and Queen Mary II in 1684. Labelled the ‘Versailles of Holland’ for its grand formal design, these impressive gardens were restored in 1984 for the 300th anniversary of the Palace. From upper windows of the Palace you can glimpse the enclosed and highly decorative privy gardens on either side. Walk through the formal parterre gardens to the gloriette at the bottom, for elevated views of the intricate patterns of the parterre gardens and views back to the façade of the Palace. The 1984 restoration of the 1684 design was a significant indicator of the rising enthusiasm in the twentieth century, for garden history. Eighteenth and nineteenth century modifications were swept away, to allow a full re-creation of the original garden. Renovations just completed have opened a huge 5000m2 of extra space beneath the forecourt, and secured the foundations.

Take the fast train to Paris this morning. Transfer by coach to Hotel du Louvre for 5 nights. Free afternoon to wander this extraordinary precinct. Dinner is included this evening in the hotel restaurant.

Hotel du Louvre , Paris

Versailles is probably the grandest garden in Europe. The gardens, like the Palace, were statements of royal power and wealth. Andre Le Notre was the garden architect for Louis XIV. In 1660 he flattened hills, filled in marshes, redirected tributary of the river Seine to service his many fountains, and he planted thousands of trees. He designed these gardens around the main axis from the Neptune Fountain to the Grand Canal, a distance of 3.5 km. He made 32 fountains to decorate a sublimely beaututiful garden that’s filled with extraordinary architectural detail. We will explore the Grand and Petit Trianons and the hidden gardens (Bosquet du Dauphin and Bosquet de la Girandole). We will need the day to see it all.

Comfortable walking shoes today for the fabulous Jardin Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne in the heart of Paris. This was one of the first ‘Jardin Anglais’ in 1775 when the Romantic English Landscape Style first swept through Europe with its picturesque lake, grotto, waterfall, Chinese pavilion, mini chateau and orangerie. Jean-Claude Nicholas Forestier designed his masterpiece in 1840; a formal rose garden where 1200 different cultivars of every type of rose are shown off to perfection on pillars, pergolas and swags. Alongside is a suite of smaller gardens of equal horticultural excellence and dedicated to iris, clematis, vegetables and to the gentle art of bedding. Free afternoon to explore the city centre.

Andre Le Notre designed the gardens at Versailles, but first, he made them at Chateau Vaux le Vicomte, and that’s where we’re headed this morning. This was his first masterpiece; chateau and outbuildings make an exquisite ensemble with gardens sweeping to the horizon. The estate is enormous so we will ride in electric buggies to see it all. This garden marks the beginning of the Baroque tradition in garden design. Gardens sweep along a grand perspective, almost three kilometers. It’s still the grandest private garden in France.

Claude Monet’s Giverny might just be the most famous in all France. His garden was part of his art; the garden and the paintings a reflection of each other. We’ll arrive early to enjoy the serenity of the Water Garden ringed with weeping willows. Monet planted wisteria, azaleas, iris, peonies, bamboo, and tamarisk; all have been faithfully restored including his wisteria-draped Japanese bridge. From this bridge he painted his first Waterlily studies. Then there’s the thrill of the flower garden, Clos Normand, a series of formal intensely planted beds … astonishing! The incredibly high standard of horticulture here is unparallelled. Flowers are bold, bright, exciting and profuse, just the way Monet liked them. Each season brings changing colour compositions. There’s a Grand Allee of roses! And finally we will see through the family home of Claude Monet, left just the way it always was. We’ll be ready for lunch when we wander into the picturesque little town of Giverny. Travel back into Paris.

Early breakfast this morning to catch the Eurostar train into London. Meet up with our coach and drive to Kew Gardens. In its setting on the banks of the River Thames, thIs botanic garden has an incomparable collection of plants. Explore the themed gardens and glasshouses; Palm House, Temperate House and Princess of Wales Conservatory. Check in to our hotel with bustling West End and the shopping districts of Kensington, Mayfair and Knightsbridge close by; the Royal Garden Hotel is perfectly positioned.

Royal Garden Hotel , London

Wisley in Surrey is our destination this morning, the headquarters of the Royal Horticultural Society with a suite of gardens that will make your heart leap. There are huge herbaceous and mixed borders, rose gardens, fruit cages, conservatories, stream garden, alpine garden and trial grounds for plant assessment. Our guide will show us the layout with a guided tour then we can explore ourselves. Free afternoon in London.

Expat Marylyn Abbott’s West Green in Hampshire is a special treat for Australian visitors. Marylyn is an exuberant personality and gardener. You might remember her garden Kennerton Green, in Mittagong, NSW Southern Highlands. While West Green pays homage to its 18th-century origins, Marylyn’s sense of fun is given plenty of room to play. Her ‘Alice in Wonderland’ walled garden, ornamental potager, Garden of the Five Bridges, classic water staircase, Persian water garden are set against her romantic Lake Garden. Lunch in the conservatory will be memorable. Walk down Sloane Street this afternoon for ‘Chelsea in Bloom’.

If there ever was a hierarchy of ‘Best British’ gardens, Sissinghurst would be at the top of the list. Surely 200,000 visitors a year can’t be wrong! Loved for its beautiful balance, its harmony, the garden rooms and inspired planting combinations; this garden is the result of a special partnership between the Bloomsbury couple Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson. We’ll climb the tower for a fabulous view, and peep into Vita’s writing room. We will explore each compartment of the garden, walk down to the Moat, herb garden and through to the new Delos Garden, a landscape of ruined stone fragments and Mediterranean plants, inspired by their visits to the Greek island. This garden has been re-created by Dan Pearson and opened in 2021.

Chelsea Flower Show, the most prestigious event in the horticultural calendar. ‘Opening Day’ is reserved for VIPs and members of the Royal Horticultural Society only, but we have arranged tickets so that you can enjoy it without dealing with the crowds that flock on public days. Enjoy multimillion-dollar show gardens and the smaller artisan gardens. There’s time to browse the flower exhibits in the Great Pavilion and treat yourself in the shopping avenue! We’ll have the whole day at Chelsea and head back to the hotel late in afternoon. Farewell Dinner tonight.

Your tour ends after breakfast.

McIlroy’s proposed return to boardroom ‘incredibly positive’ for PGA Tour

  • New chief executive of European Tour group welcomes move
  • McIlroy motivated by desire to end split in elite men’s golf

The newly installed chief executive of the European Tour group, Guy Kinnings, has urged the PGA Tour to seize the opportunity provided by Rory McIlroy’s willingness to return to the boardroom to help heal divisions in the game.

The Guardian revealed on Monday that McIlroy will assume roles on the PGA Tour’s policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board, subject to a vote on Wednesday. McIlroy is motivated by a strong desire to end the current split in elite men’s golf, where the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour are essentially operating independently of each other.

“I would welcome it wholeheartedly,” said Kinnings, who succeeded Keith Pelley this month, of a McIlroy return to a position of power. “It would be an incredibly positive move for the PGA Tour to take but it would be great for everyone.”

Golf’s key constituent parts now involve various tours and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV. McIlroy enjoys positive relations with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head of the PIF.

“He takes an interest in so many aspects of the sport,” Kinnings added. “I have known him for a very long time and he is so thoughtful. You think you know what is going on in the game and then you listen to Rory and say: ‘Wow, he has put that so well.’

“You want to have people who are ready to apply that kind of knowledge, experience and thinking. He is very well connected with people at the PGA Tour , the DP World Tour – we rely on him hugely – and also the PIF. He is the right person with those connections [and] would be a huge asset.”

Kinnings is adamant that a “united, global” route is necessary for the sport. “I see this as an amazing opportunity,” he added. “We truly have that, with the right people and voices to help shape it. Tiger [Woods] is involved, I am delighted Rory is looking at this. These are the people who should be helping to shape the game they have given so much to.

“I think it needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed quickly. You need the right people round the table, giving it thought because this is complicated.”

McIlroy would become the only European voice on these PGA Tour committees, which itself is notable. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have a strategic alliance but there has been general concern about European golf being left behind, with focus on the US. “I was always delighted to have European representation,” said Kinnings. “I think it is far better to have a global view and Rory truly has that.

“It is such an important time and he is passionate about reaching this solution that we all agree is in the best interests of the sport globally. So I think he would be so valuable, so constructive. Personally and on behalf of this tour, I would be delighted if he was back playing a very significant role in the important discussions that are ongoing.”

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Keukenhof, the Best Garden in Europe [UPDATED 2023]

the garden eu tour

The Keukenhof is known as the Garden of Europe , and if you’ve ever had the chance to walk through their green fields, you will truly understand why. For two months every year, from March to mid-May, millions of rainbow-coloured flowers (4.5 million to be exact) bloom over the 32 hectares of gardens inside the Keukenhof. They create what can only be described as a blanket of fantastical aromas and ethereal colours which cover the Dutch countryside.

the garden eu tour

When to Visit

In 2023 the Keukenhof will be open daily from 23 March – 14 May from 08:00 – 19:30.

The best time to visit the Keukenhof is before 10:30 am or after 4 pm, this is when the least tourists will be in the park and you’ll have more of the flowers all to yourself. PLUS, the morning sunrise and afternoon sunset provides an incredible backdrop to the rainbow of flowers. If you can avoid going on a weekend, this is also preferable if you’re trying to avoid crowds.

the garden eu tour

Keukenhof Tickets

Since the park is only open for a few months tickets can sell! Especially if you’re visiting over the weekend or on a holiday you’ll want to be sure to buy your tickets in advance . I would advise buying online either way since it means less time spent in line at the ticket office when you arrive.

Adults cost €19,00 in advance and children are €9,00, kids under 3 are free. But the best thing to do is buy a Combi Ticket which combines your transportation with your admission. The prices are different depending on where you’re departing from, but they range from €30-€35. The bus will drop you off at the main entrance to the gardens so it couldn’t be more convenient!

History of the Keukenhof

The Keukenhof gardens were first established in the 15th century on what was then a substantial hunting ground. The name ‘Keukenhof’ means Court Kitchen in Dutch as the fields once served as a giant herb garden for the Queen’s castle. Throughout the years, the various members of the royal family who inherited the manor continued to expand the garden, and in the 19th century, the Baron and Baroness Van Pallandt hired Jan David Zocher, a renowned landscape architect, to re-design it to create the unique and luscious garden the Netherlands had ever seen.

the garden eu tour

As time went on, the gardens were bought by the city, and in 1949 the Mayor of Lisse decided to open them up to the public. He held an exhibit of flowers from all over the Netherlands and Europe. People were able to see, and smell, hybrid flowers not available in their local markets. They walked through incredible floral landscapes created by illustrious Dutch landscape architects.

Keukenhof Flowers

Since its opening in 1949, the Keukenhof has held the title as the world’s largest flower garden as well as being the most photographed place on the earth. Today it houses more than 100 varieties of tulips, more than 2,500 trees in 87 types and 15 kilometres of walking paths. To date more than 44 million visitors over the last 60 years have strolled through this real-life Wonderland. In 2018, Keukenhof’s theme will be Romance in Flowers.

the garden eu tour

Dutch Tulips

The tulips are the main feature of the flower garden. Tulips were first brought to Europe in the 16th century and caught on in popularity in the Netherlands. Tulips were able to stand the harsh temperatures and conditions in the Netherlands more than many other internationally imported flowers. Due to their resilience, Dutch botanists became avid collectors and even started to breed new varieties. Soon, everyone wanted a tulip garden of their own. Tulips became a status symbol for anyone who planted or who carried a bouquet as they walked down the street. Today they have become somewhat ubiquitous, but in the 17th century, they were worth their weight in gold.

the garden eu tour

Varieties of Tulips

There are different groups and breeds of Dutch tulips. One is called the Couleren , which refers to the red, yellow or white coloured tulips. Then there is then Rosen , which are bright red or white with veining on the petals. The Violetten are the purple or lilac tulips, my personal favourite.

the garden eu tour

And finally, and best named, is the Bizarden , which are tulip with odd or eccentric appearances. They tend to be brown with purpled or yellow veins running across a jagged petal. A virus was known to infect these tulips during growth and was called the mosaic virus which made the tulips bloom in vibrant colours sometimes with flame-like streaks across the petals. Although it was a virus, it was one that botanists cultivated since those features were more and more desired by buyers for their bizarre appearance.

Access to the Keukenhof

To get to the Keukenhof there a few different ways of arriving depending on where and how you’re travelling.

The Keukenhof is located in the village of Lisse, which is in itself, a charming Dutch village with hundreds of flower fields colouring the countryside. If you’re renting a car while in the Netherlands you can park right at the park for €6. But you must pre-purchased parking ticket.

Driving into the Keukenhof is a great idea since it gives you the ability to drive around the surrounding village to see the farmers fields where they grow all the flowers for the Keukenhof. You can buy your parking pass online when buying your tickets or at the entry to the park.

Public transport

We used the Netherlands’ amazing public transport system to access the park. The best way to figure out your journey is by using the public transport website to map your route. Most people will be accessing the Keukenhof from Amsterdam. The best way to get there is by purchasing the combi-ticket for the gardens which includes your transport and entry to the park. There are two options for the combi-ticket.

The first option costs € 25 and covers the costs of THE BUS ONLY from Schiphol Airport to the park. Which means you’ll be responsible for payment to the airport. This is especially convenient if you are travelling to the Keukenhof directly from the airport. If you are travelling from the city, you’ll want option two, which costs € 30 and provides return access from Amsterdam. The combi-ticket gives you access to the special bus services which runs from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Leiden station or Haarlem directly to the Keukenhof entrance.

Tour Company

There are many tour companies which offer tours of the Keukenhof. These tour companies tend to be a bit rigid on time and sometimes feel a bit impersonally but I know that for some nervous or older travellers, the removal of multiple forms of transport or excessive planning is worth the trade-off. Viator offers many tours of the Keukenhof which also combine views of the surrounding coutryside. With over 200 5-star reviews you really can’t go wrong if this is the kind of experience you’re looking for.

For those travellers I mentioned previously who might have certain issues with public transport but who don’t want to deal with the time constraints of bus tours there is also taxis and uber. These cost between €50-€70 depending on where you’re departing from for a one-way journey. While costly, I think it’s important to provide this information to show inclusivity for all kinds of travellers.

Keukenhof Theme 2023

The theme of 2023’s Keukenhof is Flower Classics . There isn’t much more information released to the public yet but no doubt going back to the classics will bring lots of favourite designs from over the years.

Guide to Exploring the Keukenhof

As soon as we stepped through the door, we were amazed by the colours and the overwhelmingly Dutch atmosphere of the gardens. There was an old wooden crank organ sitting in the front beside the entry fountain and the bright, rosy-cheeked Dutch boys and girls playing their instruments welcomed us inside.

the garden eu tour

Exploring the Gardens

Before setting out right away, take the provided map to study up and plan your preferred route. There are picnic tables near the entrance, a perfect place to enjoy a morning meal. Although there are a few snack stalls, I would advise stopping by a local bakery before arriving and then eating a little picnic in the gardens. You can eat while watching the other people pass by, smiles on their faces as they took in all the jewel-toned flowers spread out around them.

Orjanje Nassau Pavilion

Every week a flower show is organized in the Orjanje Nassau Pavilion. This is a great place to come to not only see some amazing display but also learn a little bit about native Dutch flowers.

The hedge garden and maze was a lot of fun. We wove in between the thick bushes, discovering sinuous sculptures dotting the area. As we strolled through the garden, we found a small petting zoo with tiny horses and cows. Children were laughing as they reached their hands over the edge to pet the fuzzy little creatures.

the garden eu tour

The Windmill

Then, it was off to visit the main feature of this Dutch Disneyland; the Windmill. We climbed up the windmill to get a better look out over the fields where the tulips are initially grown before getting moved to the gardens.

the garden eu tour

As we climbed down, we took a moment to try on a few pairs of wooden clogs. The exhibit in front compared different ancient clogs to their modern-day equivalent.

the garden eu tour

Orchid Greenhouse

Our next stop took us away from the array of tulips and into the Orchid building . Orchids are amazing flowers. They look so strange and almost otherworldly.

the garden eu tour

Red Romance Garden

Leaving the orchid, you can step into the Red Romance Garden. We passed by what can only be described as a “Barbie’s Dream Greenhouse”. The bright pink and red flowers were almost blinding. I had never seen anything like that before. Thank goodness we brought our sunglasses!

the garden eu tour

Japanese Garden

Tulips are the main attraction, but there is also a Japanese garden, a sculpture garden and even a lily pad garden where they added fake lily pads underwater that you could walk on. They sat just below the water, so the children playing appeared as if they were walking on water.

the garden eu tour

People seemed to come here not just to see the flower but to be inspired by them. A man had his easel out and had just begun to sketch out his next masterpiece as we passed by.

For the Love of Plants: Garden Club of America to Tour UConn’s Botanical Conservatory

Showcasing a world-class botanical collection and expertise right here at UConn

On April 27 th , the UConn Botanical Conservatory will be hosting a tour for the Garden Club of America . The GCA, which was founded over 100 years ago and has 18,000 members in chapters nationwide is holding its annual meeting in Hartford Connecticut this year, and an outing to the most biologically diverse collection of plants in the Northeast is a perfect fit for the club’s horticultural enthusiasts.

Professor Emeritus and Director of the UConn Botanical Conservatory Cynthia Jones says the visit from such a prestigious horticultural organization recognizes the immense educational and scientific value the of the plants in the conservatory.

Various plants grow in the greenhouses of the UConn Botanical Conservatory

“They are the most prominent national garden club in America and the fact that they asked for tours of the UConn Botanical Conservatory speaks to the reputation of our collection.  It is a huge honor for us and is a point of pride for UConn,” says Jones.

The Garden Club of America’s purpose is to share horticultural knowledge and the interdependence between plants, the ecosystem, and environmental protection, and they do this through extensive community outreach, conferences, and public engagement. They also award scholarships, which have supported the research of several Ecology and Evolutionary Biology students I the past.

With an expected turnout of over 160 people, it will be the biggest tour the conservatory has ever led, says Botanical Collections Manager Meghan Moriarty .

For those who have not yet visited the greenhouses situated behind the Torrey Life Sciences Building, the Botanical Collections is a place like no other on campus. Not just home to the most diverse botanical collection in the Northeast, the collection is one of the most diverse at a public academic institution in the United States.

“We have over 2,700 species spread across 5,000 individual plants. This includes eight species that are extinct in the wild.  Collections of living material like the Conservatory’s are critical to the survival of those species.”

Moriarty recalls a recent example of this critical role:

Meghan Moriarty, collection manager of the UConn Botanical Conservatory, waters some of the plants in the tropical room of the Conservatory's greenhouses

“One of the plants that we grow here that is extinct in the wild is the Rwandan water lily, Nymphaea thermarum . It was known to only grow near a specific hot spring, and the population was wiped out due to habitat loss. We were contacted recently by someone from the National Herbarium of Rwanda because they recently discovered another population of the Nymphaea in the wild. They were wondering if we still had the plant in the Living Plant Collection, I told them we did, and it is flowering right now. He was very excited because many of the other places that had Nymphaea were not able to grow it long term and get it to flower.”

Jones says this example speaks to the extraordinary talent and knowledge required to keep the collection’s plants alive, especially since, in the case of the Rwandan water lily, getting some of these plants to flower is tricky. Besides UConn, successfully flowering Rwandan water lilies are kept at the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens in the United Kingdom, and both collections could someday help reintroduce populations of this plant in the wild.

“It requires a great deal of expertise to care for a collection this diverse. I don’t think there’s any other academic institution in the country, except for maybe two that have collections this extensive. It is a unique resource that sets us apart from other institutions,” says Jones.

For the GCA tour, Moriarty is making plans to ensure docents will be available to share information and guide visitors through the greenhouses, which house plants from many different growing zones and regions across the globe.

“When you walk into the collection, you are totally immersed in different colors, smells, textures, and it’s always changing day by day,” says Jones.

Various plants grow in the greenhouses of the UConn Botanical Conservatory

Moriarty, who brings a wealth of expertise in research and commercial growing says working in the living collection is exciting,

“Every day is so refreshing walking through there and I think from the perspective of visitors to the greenhouse, they have a chance to see things that they will never see anywhere else.”

Moriarty also enjoys the experience of working within the conservatory community. Though the community is a small one, the conservatories all work together by propagating and sharing plants to collectively preserve as much as they can.

“If you have something particularly rare, you always want to make sure you try to propagate it and share it with other collections.  You want to have a species of plant in as many places as possible, especially if it is difficult to grow or is rare,” says Moriarty. “We do a lot of trading with other institutions that have Living Plant Collections here in New England and also across the country and abroad.  It’s important to network and talk to other people that are doing what we do.”

Moriarty and Jones are hopeful that the GCA visit will help expand their network, or at the very least, get the word out about this amazing collection tucked in the middle of the Storrs campus.

Jones says, “I hope people will learn about how much we do in this facility, and also that the residents of Connecticut will recognize the resource and amazing opportunity to see what we have here.”

Follow the Botanical Collections on Instagram , Facebook , and tumblr . If you are on or near campus, the greenhouse hours are 8:00am-4:00pm Monday-Friday and Saturday 10:00am-2:00pm (closed Sunday).

The State Department Kept His Proposal on Course

Ben Krauss flew to Athens to propose to Shana Mansbach, with the help of her State Department colleagues, on the last stop of a European tour.

A groom embraces a bride from behind. They are standing in front of Blue Hill At Stone Barns.

By Rosalie R. Radomsky

It never bothered Benjamin Andrew Krauss in the slightest if Shana Gabrielle Mansbach took a call from Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, while they were out to dinner, and then ran off to draft a letter or a speech.

“That happened not infrequently,” said Mr. Krauss, 40, who knew the situation all too well. “This is the nature of what we do.”

The two Washington speechwriters had never met or heard of each other before connecting on the Hinge dating app in July 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“He was in his bubble, I was in mine,” said Ms. Mansbach, 31. “He has done amazing work mainly in the campaign space. I do government stuff.”

Until 2022, Ms. Mansbach had worked as the senior communications adviser and director of speechwriting for Ms. Pelosi. She is now a speechwriter and a senior adviser to Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken.

“We were mutually intrigued,” said Ms. Mansbach, who graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in politics, philosophy and economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Krauss, who has a bachelor’s degree in government from Dartmouth, is the chief executive of Fenway, a speechwriting and communications firm in Washington. In 2018, he was the chief political speechwriter for Joseph R. Biden Jr. Additionally, he has served as a speechwriter for the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Mr. Biden.

“I knew we would hit it off, and start dating,” Ms. Mansbach said. As they messaged and texted each other, Ms. Mansbach ultimately decided that it was best to keep her distance for the time being. After a five-year relationship ended in May 2020, she was in no rush to jump into another.

“She was very engaging, then she would temporarily vanish,” said Mr. Krauss, who patiently waited two months for their first date.

In September 2020, she rode a Capital Bikeshare bicycle to his condominium in Northeast Washington. After he greeted her with a big hug, they had cocktails on the roof of his rowhouse.

For the next six hours, they were never at a loss for words, but they paused long enough at the end of the evening for a kiss.

“It was a very good first kiss,” she said, and as she predicted they started seeing each other regularly.

A week later, she returned for his specialty “eggplant à la Ben,” she said, or eggplant Parmesan. “The house smelled wonderful.”

He loved cooking and prepared Eastern European dishes for her, like stuffed cabbage and borscht with sour cream. Ms. Mansbach, who grew up in Columbia, Md., made crab cakes and potato salad.

They took day trips around Washington, and in November he came up with something way more exotic: a weeklong trip to Bora Bora.

After some hesitation, and consultation with friends and family, she agreed to go in December.

“I’d wake up at 4 in the morning, and sit outside and watch the sun come up,” she said, recalling her time working remotely.

In May 2021, during a 10-day trip, they drove across Georgia (the country, not the state), where he had been for his first consulting job at a firm doing opinion research for its president, Mikheil Saakashvili, and they also stopped in eastern Kyiv in Ukraine.

In spring 2022, they adopted Sasha, a foxhound rescue, and that July Ms. Mansbach moved into his condo. “Any bit of uncertainty evaporated,” she said.

Mr. Krauss supported her as she geared up for her first marathon, and on the day of the race, in Philadelphia, he sprinted around the city with her friends and family to cheer her on.

“It was in the 20s that day, with 50-mile-an-hour gusts,” she said.

When they visited Mr. Krauss’s parents in Katonah, N.Y., in January 2023, they found the perfect wedding venue 20 minutes away, Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, N.Y., and booked it before their engagement.

A colleague had called to tell Ms. Mansbach, who was about to go to sleep, that Mr. Blinken was about to toast staffers on the roof of their hotel — Hotel Grande Bretagne, which had a view of the Parthenon. So she went up there.

On April 13, Cantor Laura Stein officiated at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, before 150 guests while the couple stood under a huppah with the same tallit her parents were married under.

“We know we’re headed into what promises to be a busy year,” Mr. Krauss said, “and we’re just glad to have each other.”

Day 1 – 25 August 2024 – Arrival at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport – Complimentary Drinks

  • Upon arrival, check-in to the Hyatt Amsterdam Airport for an overnight stay and meet your tour leader and fellow garden visitors over complementary drinks in the early evening. Dinner is on your own.

Accommodation :  Hyatt Amsterdam Airport

Day 2 – 26 August 2024 – JP Thyssepark, Vlinderhof – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

  • After breakfast and check-out, we will travel a short distance to JP Thyssepark in Amstelveen. Named after the ecologist JP Thysse, this park was designed by Christiaan P. Broerse (1902-1995) and makes pioneering use of wild flowers.
  • After our visit, we’ll have lunch at Hotel/Café Restaurant Koekenbier before we leave for Vlinderhof garden in the heart of Leidsche Rijn on the west side of Utrecht. The garden was designed by Piet Oudolf and is one of 6 sections of over 5000m2 of parkland in what is now known as Netherlands Maxima park.

Accommodation :   Hotel Mooirivier Dalfsen

Day 3 – 27 August 2024 – Palace Het Loo, Kröller Muller Museum & Garden – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included.

  • Today we visit two very different gardens. First, we travel to Het Loo Palace. Built between 1684 and 1686 for King William III and Mary II of England, the palace is a fine example of Dutch Baroque architecture and is now a state museum. The palace garden was designed by Le Nôtre’s nephew, Claude Desgotz. In keeping with Baroque style, it is perfectly symmetrical, has an axial design with radiating gravel walks, and includes parterres with fountains, basins, and statues.
  • From Het Loo Palace, we make our way by coach to the Kröller Muller Museum & Sculpture Garden located in the splendid Hogh Veluwe National Park. The museum was opened in 1938 and has the second-largest collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the world. Adjacent to the museum is one of the largest sculpture gardens in Europe. Set in more than 75 acres (30 ha), it has a fine collection of modern and contemporary sculptures. The museum, its design and sculpture garden perfectly reflect its founders’ conception of a symbiosis between art, architecture, and nature. It’s a very special place.
  • Accommodation :  Hotel Mooirivier Dalfsen

Day 4 – 28 August 2024 – Fortmond garden, Dutch Dreams, Appeltern Gardens – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

  • After breakfast and check out, we travel to visit private garden Fortmond, a garden that has been inspired by the Dutch Wave style and which merges with the surrounding natural landscape. Recently the park ‘Dutch Dreams’ was opened including the work of several designers, all inspired by the Dutch Wave style
  • On arrival at Appeltern gardens, we will have lunch. In the early 1980s, Ben Oojen = Ben van Ooijen decided to create a series of small model gardens as a way of selling his garden design services. This grew into what is now known as De Tuinen van Appeltern, which showcases the best of Dutch horticulture. This place is a major source of garden inspiration and welcomes visitors from all over the world.

Day 5 – 29 August 2024 – Lianne’s Siergassen, Kleine Plantage, Tuinfleur incl. lunch –  Menkemaborg – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

  • After driving to the province of Groningen we visit ‘Lianne’s Siergassen’ first: a nursery with a show and prairie garden. Here, more than 300 different grass species are on display in the show garden and used in many different ways – alone, as ground cover, or in borders. Home to the Dutch collection of Poaceae (ornamental grasses), this is a very special place, and you will leave with inspiration on how to include grasses in your garden or patio to maximum effect.
  • We’ll have lunch at Abraham’s Mosterdmolen before traveling to visit Kleine Plantage, a small-scale nursery with gardens located in the Groningse Hogeland. The basic structure of the garden was laid out in the fall of 1986 when hedges and trees were planted. In the following years, the borders and gardens were added. The garden is constantly changing, and as a visitor, you will notice how it uses hedging to ensure that you are constantly connected to the surrounding Groninger Hogeland landscape.
  • Accommodation :   Hotel Halbert

Day 6 – 30 August 2024 – Garden Tools deWit, DuoGarden, City Visit Groningen – Breakfast & Dinner included

  • Today, we start with something different. For over 115 years, the name of DeWit® has been synonymous with craftsmanship, reliability, and quality in forged garden tools. We’ll visit the factory, see how the tools are made, and have plenty of time to look at the various garden tools for sale in the shop.
  • Next, we visit DuoGarden, a Dutch wave inspired perennial garden.  Afterwards, we travel back to Groningen for lunch (on your own) and for some free time to explore this fascinating and largely unspoilt Dutch city.

Accommodation :  Hotel Halbert

Day 7 – 31 August 2024 – De Wiersse, Mien Ruys Garden – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included

  • After breakfast and check-out, we travel to Gelderland to visit the moated manor house of De Wiersse. With 38 acres of garden and 74 acres of landscape park, the house and its surroundings have been lived in, designed, and managed by the same family since 1678. With pergolas, fountains, and statues, meadows and formal parterres, a kitchen garden, and mixed borders, there is a great deal of interest here.
  • After lunch, we visit Mien Ruys Garden. For 70 years, Mien Ruys developed her creative ideas here on 6.2 acres. Now a sequence of thirty gardens, it is the experimental character of these gardens that make them so important to garden lovers and garden specialists worldwide. The Mien Ruys garden is a source of inspiration for those interested in gardens and garden architecture as well as an oasis of peace for anyone who just wants to enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet. After the garden visit, we will enjoy a canal cruise in Amsterdam including dinner at 7:00 pm. Later, we will check in for an overnight stay at Hyatt Amsterdam Airport.

Accommodation :  Hyatt Amsterdam Airport.

Day 8 – 01 September 2024 – Departure

After breakfast, it is time to say goodbye as the tour comes to an end. Departure from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

DJ Porter Robinson coming to Nashville as Music City sees EDM uptick

the garden eu tour

DJ, record producer and singer-songwriter Porter Robinson will be bringing a night of EDM to Nashville on his upcoming tour. He will be performing at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Sept. 10.

Robinson's "SMILE! World Tour" brings him to Music City in support of his upcoming album "SMILE! :D," which will release on July 26.

The DJ is known for songs "Everything Goes On," "Shelter" and "Goodbye To A World." On April 23, he dropped a new single from the album "Knock Yourself Out XD."

Robinson's tour will see him make his way through North America, Australia, Asia, Europe and South America.

Robinson comes as Nashville sees EDM uptick

Robinson's Nashville performance comes as EDM is shining bright in Music City.

At the end of March, athlete Shaquille O'Neal, also known as DJ Diesel , took the stage at the Skydeck on Broadway.

O'Neal's EDM alter ego brought a night of thumping EDM music to Broadway with a packed crowd and a set that featured pulsating trap music, modern electric dance music favorites and dubstep.

Nashville also recently saw the opening of one of its first EDM dance clubs, the Night We Met .

The club, located in the Gulch, opened to the public on March 28 . Night We Met is looking to grow the EDM scene in Nashville—a city known for country and rock music, not its club scene, like New York or Los Angeles.

The new venue will host DJs from all over the world with global platforms.

EDM fans can check out upcoming events at nightwemetnashville.com .

How do I buy tickets to Porter Robinson's tour?

There will be a Live Nation presale starting on Wednesday, May 1 at 10 a.m. CST and going until May 2 at 10 p.m. CST at livenation.com .

Fans can use the code "SOUNDCHECK" to access the presale.

General onsale will begin on Friday, May 3 at 10 a.m. CST at porterrobinson.com .
