It's the morning of July 3, 2023, and the members of the Marvelous 3 are on Instagram live, beaming in on three screens from Tennessee, California and Georgia.

Singer and songwriter Butch Walker, bass player Jayce Fincher and drummer Doug Slug Mitchell, aka Mitch McLee, compare their love of coffee and oat milk as they look over vintage photos sent in by their fans for the sleeve of the band's latest and fourth album, called IV .

Fincher says he recognizes fan's faces. Walker laughs and says, "The only one I don't recognize is me."

Walker, a former Calvin Klein model, is dressed in a cozy plaid shirt, although these days he is often spotted in a black Bitter Southerner tee bearing the slogan, "Practice radical empathy" in all-caps.

In their 50s, the three are no longer the big-haired high school boys who left Rome, Ga., bound for Los Angeles and a five-year stint playing heavy glam rock with the group South Gang in the late 1980s and early '90s.

This weekend in Atlanta, the Marvelous 3 is reuniting to rock the rafters of the Tabernacle in support of its first new album in two decades.

The rock trio headlined the century-old venue, a former Baptist church in 2001. Since then, its front man, Walker, has carved out a solo career as a globetrotting producer of hits by Pink, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Fall Out Boy.

Now he's enjoying a renewed interest in his own band's place in Georgia music history.

On a Zoom interview with GPB last week, Walker said he and his bandmates sold merch out of their van while performing 200 shows a year, with the dream of being rock stars.

"We moved out to L.A. straight out of high school, just to like to chase it and we chased it," he said. "We caught it, and then we lost it immediately, which was fine and good because we — really, I don't think our future was to be a notable hair metal band."

When the band returned to Georgia, members regrouped as the Floyds, named after their home county, and ultimately as Marvelous 3. The pointed rock songs from the M3's first album, Math and Other Problems weren't overly commercial, but did reflect the melting pot that was Atlanta's music scene in 1997, back when blending metal and new wave was like mixing oil and water.

"Being that the scene was so multicultural and multi-faceted and multi genre, we were able to be on bills all the time with people, like, in all walks of life," Walker remembered. "We had hip-hop guys coming to our shows all the time, and we had, you know, I remember Andre 3000 going and hanging out at rock shows all the time. And Cee-Lo would work over at my recording studio, and it was just a really cool thing, you know?"

1998's Hey! Album quickly followed. Walker credits Marvelous 3's career break to the Atlanta Alternative Rock Station 99X, where the track "Freak of the Week" went from locals only to No. 5 on the Billboard charts in 1999.

"I started getting calls all the time to produce records because of that song being a hit and people wondering who produced it," he said. "And that's how it worked in the industry, right? It was like record labels would be, like, 'Oh, this is a hot song right now. Who did it? Let's get them for this new band we signed.' And that's what started happening."

The group released a third album in 2000 and called it quits in 2001 due to conflicting commitments. However, the friendship between the members never waned, even though Walker's star rose as a producer for dozens of artists.

Over the past 22 years, Walker has amassed quite a catalog of writing and production credits, including 10 solo albums. He performed at Music Midtown in 2018 and released American Love Story , a concept album written after the 2016 election and the Charlottesville protests that told the story of political division and a reckoning with harsh truths about growing up in the South against anyone "who wasn't straight, white or Christian," he said in an  interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution at the time. He followed that up with Butch Walker as ... Glenn , an alter-ego, piano-based collection of 1970s-inspired easy rock ballads .

But after the pandemic, a Marvelous 3 reunion felt right.

"We parted the best of friends and stayed the best of friends," Walker said. "So it was never going to be rocket science getting everyone back together. It was more just like 'How?' and 'When?' And 'Does it matter?' Because it only matters for our friendship. Because outside of our fans — of that band, in particular —this is not something we realistically think is going to move the needle in the grand world scheme of music. We're not trying to be a relevant new band, is what I'm saying. And so, to do it, would only be to have fun."

Marvelous 3's latest songs pay homage to the band's Georgia roots in tracks like "My Old School, Metal Heart" and "Time to Let It Go," which are full of the humor and melodic choruses for which Walker is best known. He continues his tradition of using Atlanta places and street names with a mention of Moreland Avenue (past recordings have include mentions of Buckhead, Peachtree Battle, Grant Park and other locations). And there's a special song written by a fellow Atlanta band, The Producers: a Marvelous 3 cover of the group's classic 1982 power pop hit, "She Shelia." The Producers  performed the song during a co-headlining slot on a bill with Duran Duran at MTV's New Year's Rock 'N' Roll Ball on Dec. 31, 1982.

Walker said he first heard "She Sheila" when his sister's boyfriend's band played it at a bonfire back when he was a teen, and the idea of rerecording it in 2023 in honor of Atlanta's power pop lineage came up on the final day in the studio with Marvelous 3. They decided to mimic the song's iconic keyboard riff by Wayne Famous with their guitars.

"We just slammed it, and I was like, 'Of course we nailed that!' " he laughed. "We knew exactly, we knew that it was, like, in our veins for, you know, for years. It was really cool to put it on the new record and kind of wrap up the new album with that as an influence. Because a lot of people hear it now, and are just like, 'Wow, that's one of my favorite songs on the record.' And they don't even know it's a cover. I'm like, 'Well, there you go.' And I'm like, that's how strong the song is."

With dozens of 1980s and 1990s acts on the road this year and festivals such as the recent When We Were Young gathering in Las Vegas featuring the bands Blink 182 and 30 Seconds to Mars, Walker said the time was right for the reunion. And with sold-out shows in Atlanta and Chicago to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its Hey! Album, putting out a fourth one wasn't a bad idea.

"We didn't fit in then, and we don't fit in now," Walker said. "So we didn't care about trying to like, 'Oh, maybe we can squeeze onto an emo show or something. It's not that. We're doing this for ourselves."

The Marvelous 3 perform at Atlanta's Tabernacle Oct. 27 through Oct. 29, 2023.

Marvelous 3

House of Blues

Chicago, IL

Friday, November 3, 2023

Review and photos by Jeff Elbel

The energy, musicianship, and production of Friday’s concert at House of Blues by the Marvelous 3 did not seem like the work of a band playing a mere five gigs after 22 years apart (aside from a short reunion set in 2018). The show was a non-stop blast of catchy power-pop, skill, and goodwill. Maybe singer/guitarist Butch Walker missed one or two more pick-stunt catches than he might have in the late ‘90s. The real tell-tale signs that this was a brief stint, however, were the naked emotions emanating from the stage. Singer/guitarist Butch Walker, bassist Jayce Fincher, and drummer Doug “Slug” Mitchell expressed their mutual love and joy at being together in both word and deed while extending those feelings to a sold-out audience that was with them all the way.

The bulk of the setlist was drawn from Hey! Album  (celebrating its 25 th  anniversary this year) and 2000’s  ReadySexGo . The band also pulled a few tracks to represent brand-new album  IV .

The adrenaline blast of “You’re So Yesterday” began the show with a cheeky self-referential jab. The explosive “Little Head” and swaggering “Grant Park” followed.

The band was far more interested in savoring the experience than playing it cool. “Oh, shit, this is fun, y’all,” said Fincher after the band blasted through heavy pop confection “Write it On Your Hand.” “We have the best time playing together,” said Walker. “Thank you so much, Chicago.”

“I don’t have a better setup for this song except to say you guys are fucking beautiful,” added Walker as the band launched “Beautiful” from ReadySexGo . Between riffs and licks, Walker bounced his guitar pick off the base of his guitar and caught it in midair. The swinging “Every Monday” followed, with every voice in the room singing along powerfully. “Mrs. Jackson” was another opportunity for fervent audience participation.

There were a couple of indicators of the time that Marvelous 3 had spent away from concert stages. One was the gray flecking Walker’s unruly mop of hair. The other was the presence of Jayce Fincher’s son Holden as a vital part of the ensemble. Photos on screen showed the younger Fincher walking onstage as a toddler during the Marvelous 3’s heyday. The guitarist more than held his own with the band, facing off with Walker for harmonized solos during songs like “Vampires in Love” (during which the band quoted Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”) and adding vocal power throughout the set. Pride radiated from the elder Fincher and from Walker as well. “He’s out to get our job,” said Walker. “I love you, Holden.” Walker and the younger Fincher performed a moving duet of the heartsick ballad “Let Me Go,” sharing stirring vocals while Walker sat at the piano and Fincher played guitar.

Walker described his youthful connection to the Atlanta-based band The Producers, with one of the band members dating his sister. Upon hearing one of their songs on the radio, Walker recalled his teenaged disbelief, “God, that’s a great song. There’s no way they wrote that!” The band then played its crunchy pop overhaul of The Producers’ 1982 hit “She Sheila,” included as the only cover song on IV . The Marvelous 3 added the muscular sound of Cheap Trick to the Producers’ original new wave and power pop foundation. The Finchers added shimmering harmonies to Walker’s melody.

Slug’s sturdy beat heralded “Over My Head,” but not before Walker quoted the Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker” and led the crowd in singing Smash Mouth hit “All Star” in tribute to late friend Steve Harwell. The crowd joined the Marvelous 3’s kiss-off chorus, flipping their middle fingers as Walker sang, “He gave you the castle, baby, so I’ll give you the bird.”

Walker played a hot guitar solo quoting Rush’s “The Spirit of Radio” while stage snow fell on the audience during “Cold as Hell.” The band teased a bit of “Tainted Angel” from their prior incarnation as SouthGang before following with fresh cuts from  IV,  including the nostalgic but recriminatory “My Old School Metal Heart.”The hard-hitting and tuneful “If We’re On Fire (Let It Burn)” sounded like a mash-up of Rick Springfield, Cheap Trick, the Jackson 5, and Sweet.

The band paused for a whiskey toast with the crew before blasting through the defiant “Sugar Buzz.” “Is that apple juice? I love apple juice,” quipped Walker as he was handed a glass. Jayce Fincher lofted t-shirts into the crowd with a stadium slingshot.

Slug banged a gong to ignite the Queen and Mott the Hoople-styled glam rock of “Radio Tokyo.” Alongside songs like Spacehog’s “In the Meantime,” it was a touchstone to the ‘90s vibrant glam revival. Fans’ lighters appropriately appeared throughout the room afterward for the power ballad “Cigarette Lighter Love Song.” Walker finished with a high falsetto vocal reminiscent of the Darkness’ Justin Hawkins. The band made displays of mutual devotion and affection before waving goodbye and departing the stage.

Marvelous 3 reappeared in matching Blackhawks jerseys (all sporting number three, naturally) to bring the house down with euphoric hit single “Freak of the Week.” “I don’t want this to be over!,” exclaimed Walker before dispensing praise upon his bandmates and the audience one last time. The show concluded with a revved-up cover of Burt Bacharach’s “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me” via Naked Eyes, performed under a flurry of balloons and confetti.

After a final embrace and brotherly kisses all around, the Marvelous 3 left the elated audience singing Styx’s hit “Come Sail Away” as the house lights came up.

With original plans for only a hometown stand at Atlanta’s The Tabernacle, it was a testament to the band’s connection with its audience in Chicago that the Windy City was the only other location to host reunion shows. Strongholds, including New York and Los Angeles, were bypassed. The band has stated that no more concerts are planned. Fans who missed the performances can pick up newly released vinyl copies of Hey! Album ,  ReadySexGo , and  IV  recreate the set list and escape into their headphones.

Marvelous 3 announces reunion shows, hey album vinyl & new music.

the marvelous 3 tour

Marvelous 3 – the band made up of guitar singin’ frontman Butch Walker, Jayce Fincher on bass and Slug Mitchell on drums – have announced a special hometown show to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hey! Album .

In addition to the show (EDIT: Now shows . The first show sold out so fast a second date was added. THEN a third show was added – ALL are SOLD OUT), the band will release Hey! Album on vinyl for the very first time.

Check out the update from the band:

Hey. Do you remember us? Maybe you saw us way back around ‘96-‘97, when we were just merely a fledgling side project, playing at midnight at places like Smith’s Old Bar or The Point in Atlanta? Or some random college bars across the East or Midwest? Or maybe sometime in ‘98, you started hearing our song “Freak Of The Week” being played on the popular radio station 99X in Atlanta, followed by every big radio station in the country? Maybe you were one of the thousands of folks that became die-hard fans of our live shows and came to see us play festivals, theaters, and clubs all over the country? That is… until our light started to flicker and we decided to “call it a day” in Atlanta by headlining a big outdoor concert as a proper send-off to all of our friends, fans, and family? That was a little band called the Marvelous 3. And that was us. And damn.. we have missed you. If you look at your calendar and do some light math, it’s been 25 years since the release of our career altering record “Hey! Album”, that launched us onto a map we had only dreamed of navigating for the brief moment we were a band. So what do you think we should do now? Welp.. We have some ideas… First, we are going to FINALLY release the “Hey! Album” on VINYL!!! (Remember the weird orange bed on the album cover? Yeah that was awkward). But hey.. This is the first and only time it’s ever been available on vinyl and we want you to have it. Oh.. There will be some other fun Merch that you can get with it when you purchase, as well as a chance to be the first lucky owners of a limited number of SIGNED copies by the band! So that’s cool right? But what if we sweetened the deal? What if we also GET THE BAND BACK TOGETHER to play a big hometown rock show? Well IT’S ON. October 27th 2023 will mark the return of the mighty Marvelous 3 to the stage it called home for many epic nights… The Tabernacle in Atlanta!!!! This show will be like nothing we’ve ever done before, with huge stage production, video screens with some never before seen history footage of the band throughout their journey since high school. JUST A BIG OL’ ROCK SHOW. Special guests? Yep. And what about the set list?? Well.. holy moly, we have planned an EPIC show that you will not want to miss! Hell, we might even throw in a 2nd night if all goes well.. 😏 Either way, this is your chance to travel into the great city of ATLANTA for that entire weekend, and spend it with your favorite band of all time 😉 Hell, we’ve gotten so excited to do this, that we might even have some NEW MUSIC recorded for your ears to hear soon! 😎 Life has been weird and wild. Times lately feel kinda hopeless and full of negativity, divisiveness, and hate. We’ve decided that with the 25th anniversary of this record, now is the best time to remind you of what really matters. And what matters is coming to ROCK THE FUCK OUT WITH US at an unforgettable, once in a lifetime party, so that we can put smiles on your faces once more. The bond this band of brothers has sustained over the course of.. well.. 35 freakin’ years of playing in bands together… it’s just something not many people get to say they’ve done, and still remain best friends through it all. And that’s what we are. Brothers forever. Marvelous 3 forever. We can’t wait to hug your necks. We love you, Jayce, Slug, and Butch

The Marvelous 3 Reunion – Atlanta, GA – 10/27/2023

Atlanta’s Tabernacle, which originally opened in 1911 as a church, hosted a religious experience like no other last night as the Marvelous 3 performed together live for the first of three sold-out shows at the downtown venue under the 20-story Centennial Park SkyView Ferris wheel.

As a DJ warmed up the crowd, we learned that fans traveled well beyond the metro-area to witness the reunion of Butch Walker, Jayce Fincher and Douglas “Slug” Mitchell.  Front row center of the overpacked general admission floor we found fans and media who ventured from Australia, England, and all over the United States to witness the show live and in person.  In fact, the line for the show began and 5:30 am, yesterday morning!

We were honored to be there and to cover the show for The Pure Rock Shop , having documented the evolution from the days of Southgang,  who’s video hit “Tainted Angel” was teased mid-set, to the Marvelous 3 to Butch Walker’s solo career in our publication and pretty much everything in between. That history is reflected upon in the band’s new single “My Old School Metal Heart,” with hooks and lyrics and that already have us singing along.

From the announcement of the reunion and a new album to my travels to get here, the anticipation was painstaking to say the least. We began our journey in Nashville for the Rare Hare tribute night thrown by Tyson Leslie , which brought together national and regional Nashville-based musicians who performed the and’s first three albums and a few rare singles. And, we had the great opportunity to meet both fans and musicians who love the music of the Marvelous 3 just as much as I do.

Closing that night off chatting with the band who came to witness the surreal tribute to their music, I realized just how much I missed seeing them together and just how long it had been…as their new video and social posts bring out the footage of their early careers, I thought back to my life before kids and before digital photography and smart phones…It was a time when interviews were recorded on micro cassette (and yes I still have those early Butch Walker conversations on tape) and when they were coordinated by calling hotel rooms on a house phone.

As we watched Jayce Fincher’s son Holden take the stage with the band on guitar and vocals, we were kindly remembered that we aren’t kids anymore.  But, for the night we sure remembered what it felt like to be young…

It seemed appropriate to kick off the evening with “You’re So Yesterday.” As the stage lit up with three huge video screens, lights, pyro, and more, the band dialed things back a couple decades, and that was just the beginning…from the sentimental “Let Me Go” duet between Butch and Holden to the epic “Radio Tokyo” we were in awe. Wouldn’t want to give away too many secrets, but it was quite the party which concluded as one would expect with “Freak of the Week” and their cover of the classic “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me ”  from the songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David which featured a memorable call for audience participation.

I would be lying if I told you that I didn’t get choked up last night.  As I write this, I am getting a bit teary-eyed again.  It is one thing to sing along to an album, but it is a completely different thing to watch the emotion in their eyes and the energy behind their delivery up close from a live audience. So if you didn’t get a chance to score a ticket to an Atlanta or Chicago show this week, I’d encourage to get yourself a seat for the live stream in the store at www.butchwalker.com for the show tonight or tomorrow, because you don’t want to miss this!

More captures and coverage on social now  @ThePureRockShop   and more to come …  follow us for more news, as well local and regional show coverage and captures, festival highlights, and interviews!

Regrets, she has a few. But then again, it’s not the end for Ellen DeGeneres .

Returning to the stage Wednesday night at Largo in Los Angeles, the former host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show was not afraid to address her clouded departure from her long-running show. A sold-out crowd of about 200 fans was supportive and eager to see her on the first night of her  Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour .

According to accounts in People and Rolling Stone , she said she was “kicked out of show business” for a second time for “being mean.” (The first time was when she was shut out and her sitcom was canceled after she came out as gay, DeGeneres noted.)

She added, ruefully, There’s no mean people in show business.”

DeGeneres joked that she would soon be ostracized a third time for being “old, mean, and gay.”

The most damaging incident to her career came in July 2020, when BuzzFeed News ran a story based on anonymous quotes from her talk show staffers. They complained of being penalized for taking medical leave, instances of racial micro-aggressions, and fear of retribution for raising complaints.

DeGeneres said that the perceptions created by those allegations destroyed her television persona. She announced the show’s end in May 2021.

“The hate went on for a long time and I would try to avoid looking at the news,” she recalled. “The ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. That was the headline.”

DeGeneres said people started to think of her as a “one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps.”

She then added, per Rolling Stone, “I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again. It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

“No… It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” she said, noting that she “had a hard time” and “didn’t get out” amid the scandal. That “funk” started to damage her relationship with Portia de Rossi. “She was watching it happen to me… she went through it with me,” she said of her wife of 16 years.

“I’m making jokes about what happened to me, but it was devastating,” she said. “It took a long time for me to want to do anything again.”

DeGeneres said that she “hated the way the show ended” because she “loved that show so much.”

Still, DeGeneres is getting back up. She revealed during the show that she has a new Netflix special to be taped this fall.

Ellen DeGeneres Addresses ‘Getting Kicked Out of Show Business’ on Her New Comedy Tour: ‘It’s Been a Toll on My Ego’

By Krystie Lee Yandoli

Krystie Lee Yandoli

As she strode onto the famed comedy stage of the Largo at the Coronet Theater in the heart of West Hollywood on Wednesday night, Ellen DeGeneres was a woman in command. A sold-out crowd of about 200 fans burst into roaring applause, eager to see the comedian turned talk-show host return to her comedy roots on the first night of her Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour . And she didn’t disappoint. Dressed in a simple, black long-sleeved shirt, white pants, and sneakers, DeGeneres addressed the elephant in the room with her first words.

“I used to say that I didn’t care what other people thought of me and I realized…I said that at the height of my popularity,” DeGeneres said, prompting the audience to erupt in laughter. “It is such a waste of time to worry about what other people think…Right now I’m hoping you’re thinking, ‘This is marvelous, I’m so happy to be here.’ But you could be thinking, ‘Let’s see how this goes.’”

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Her Wednesday night set — culled from material DeGeneres said she’s been working on for about six months, including in a handful of performances — kicked off with a recap of what she’s been up to since her talk-show ended: gardening, a lot of sweatpants-wearing, and collecting chickens as pets. She joked that as someone who once hosted a daily show, she appreciates the plight of the chicken who has to lay an egg every day. Still, most of the routine found her grappling with having become Public Enemy No. 1 — a whiplash turn from her once-firm reputation as the happy-go-lucky talk-show host who ended each episode telling her audience to “be kind to one another.”

“What else can I tell you?” she mused, mock-reflecting on her recent past before adding sarcastically, “Oh yeah, I got kicked out of show business. There’s no mean people in show business.”

From jerry seinfeld to george lopez, here's where to buy 2024 comedy tour tickets online, richard lewis, comic and 'curb your enthusiasm' star, dead at 76.

“I didn’t go to business school. I went to Charlie’s Chuckle Hutt,” DeGeneres joked. “The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said ‘Ellen’ and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said ‘Ellen,’ but I don’t know that that meant I should be in charge.”

She chalked up some of the vitriol she faced at the time to sexism, noting that “there are consequences” for not following the pre-existing rules and gender roles. Referencing the cancellation of her eponymous sitcom in the 1990s after she’d announced to the world that she was gay, she added wryly, “For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business…Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old, and gay.”

The demise of her talk show seems especially painful for DeGeneres since, as she described in her set, it had been her way back to being embraced after her Nineties exile. “I’m giving stuff away…and I danced, then I was mean and they didn’t like me again,” she said. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

As a 66-year-old woman, DeGeneres said she’s also grown increasingly aware of the aging process both physically and mentally. She finds herself thinking about existential subjects like time and the universe, and said her doctor recently told her she has osteoporosis and arthritis. Plus, she joked, now she’s at a point in her life where she’s obsessing over Wheel of Fortune .

Bringing up chickens as another metaphor for women and gender roles, DeGeneres made her point with “one last chicken joke,” as she put it. “Why did the chicken cross the road? Because she wanted to and you wouldn’t ask a rooster that.”

At the conclusion of her set, the crowd gave DeGeneres a standing ovation, prompting her to return to the stage for a candid conversation with the audience. DeGeneres called on people one by one as they asked questions and shared messages of gratitude. One same-sex couple said they had gotten married earlier that day and asked for marital advice. (DeGeneres’ wife of 16 years, Portia de Rossi, briefly made an appearance onstage during the Q&A, at fans’ request; DeGeneres explained that the last few years had been very tough on de Rossi as well, saying, “We were both just laying low for a while.”) One woman thanked DeGeneres for her original Netflix comedy special (2018’s Relatable ) because it made her mom laugh when she was diagnosed with cancer. Another woman expressed her thanks to DeGeneres for participating in her autistic daughter’s bat mitzvah. One person who said they’d been inspired by DeGeneres’ positivity asked if she used dancing as a means of escape during her recent tough period.

“No. It’s hard to dance when you’re crying,” DeGeneres replied. “But I am dancing now.”

DeGeneres flashed another moment of sensitivity and bewilderment when a fan asked if her first go-round with public scrutiny after coming out prepared her for the next one, when The Ellen DeGeneres Show collapsed.

“This was a whole different thing,” she replied. “This was like, ‘What is going on?’ It was so hurtful. I couldn’t gain perspective. I couldn’t do anything to make myself understand that it wasn’t personal… I just thought, ‘Well this is not the way I wanted to end my career, but this is the way it’s ending.’”

DeGeneres added that it took her a long time to figure out what she wanted to say on the topic and how she wanted to say it.

Citing the self-help book The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom , DeGeneres explained that she’s made her peace with the fact that everyone has their own reasons for making certain choices and “they have to live with their stuff.”

“I do realize that whatever happens may have nothing to do with me, it’s just somebody else’s stuff,” she said. “So no, I will not [seek revenge].”

Kangaroo island: south australia’s paradise for animal lovers.

Kangaroo Island is also referred to as "Karta Pintingga."

Australia is home to its fair share of fascinating creatures—the frilled lizard, quokka and platypus, to name a few—and when it comes to spotting a massive array of native species in the flesh, few destinations can compare to Kangaroo Island. Located just southwest of Adelaide, this storied site serves as one of South Australia’s crown jewels for ecotourism, with no shortage of protected preserves that play host to all sorts of indigenous flora and fauna. As you plan your next trip to Australia’s southern shore, be sure to save some room on the itinerary for a wildlife-filled foray into the depths of Kangaroo Island.

Spot Native Avifauna on a Birding Excursion

The New Holland honeyeater is a common sight across Kangaroo Island.

Australia’s diversity of landscapes and climates has given rise to a truly incredible array of indigenous avian species, with many of its most striking birds calling Kangaroo Island home—and for those hoping to spot a wealth of these marvelous creatures in the flesh, Bell Bird Tours offers the perfect multi-day voyage. Taking place in both September and November, the four-day Kangaroo Island Birding Tour takes guests deep into the interior of the island, providing visitors with an opportunity to encounter birds like the Cape Barren goose, white-bellied whipbird and tawny-crowned honeyeater—and as an added bonus, seabirds abound across Kangaroo Island’s perimeter, with the flesh-footed shearwater, Wilson's storm petrel and southern royal albatross serving as just a few of the species that might make an appearance.

For those visiting the island outside of September and November, Exceptional Kangaroo Island has been in the tour business since 1986, with multiple curated excursions that highlight the culture and natural beauty of the surrounding region. During a three-day Wild About Birds tour, guests can immerse themselves in the splendor of Kangaroo Island from an entirely-avian perspective, with countless passerines, waders and raptors all appearing throughout the journey. While there’s no shortage of fascinating sites on the itinerary, highlights range from Roper’s Gums—a top spot for scoping out glossy black cockatoos—to Duck Lagoon, a billabong that’s rife with native waterfowl.

Sample Traditional Ligurian Honey at an Island Apiary

There are roughly eight extant honey bee species on the planet.

WhatsApp Brand New iPhone Feature Just Launched That s Much Easier To Use

Earth s new second moon is as big as the statue of liberty and scientists just found its origin, new apple id password reset issue hitting iphone ipad and macbook users.

Australia is known for sweet treats ranging from fairy bread to Tim Tams, but for those who visit Kangaroo Island, there’s a particularly fascinating confection found in the form of Ligurian honey. This sugary substance is produced in abundance by the Ligurian honey bee, a type of domesticated insect that was first bred in the Italian region of Liguria—and while this particular breed of bee has been wiped out across the globe due to crossbreeding, Kangaroo Island’s isolation from the mainland has allowed the animals to thrive without interference, ultimately establishing the surrounding region as the last bastion of the Ligurian honey bee.

Visitors hoping to sample their honey in person have a wealth of options scattered across the island, with Clifford’s Honey Farm located in the locality of Haines. Upon arrival, guests can kick off their thirty-minute tour with a hearty helping of fresh honey ice cream, then make their way to the property’s polished glass beehive to look for the queen. Post-search, the on-site shop is packed full of honey-based sauces and dressings, while the mead is a top choice for visitors wishing to take a boozy souvenir back to the mainland. Further north, the Kangaroo Island Ligurian Bee Co has been a top spot for honey tasting since 2001, inviting guests to take part in a facility tour that highlights topics spanning from bee conservation to the overall honey-making process.

Discover Endemic Mammals on a Wildlife Tour

The short-beaked echidna is one of the few egg-laying mammal species found on earth today.

Australia is renowned for its spectacular mammalian biodiversity, and Kangaroo Island is no exception. As one might be able to guess from the name, the region is brimming with large mobs of western grey kangaroos, but for those hoping to spot some of the island’s more elusive fauna, the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is an essential destination. Established in the late ‘90s, this private preserve has acted as a crucial haven for native mammals for decades, with its koalas serving as a particularly popular draw for tourists. Guests can marvel at these endemic animals during a Guided Koala Walk, while the Sunset Nocturnal Adventure Tour is perfect for spotting creatures spanning from the tammar wallaby to the short-beaked echidna.

During daylight hours, the aforementioned Exceptional Kangaroo Island is also a top company for wildlife-focused excursions. For those in search of a single-day tour, the Flinders Chase Focus excursion casts a spotlight on Flinders Chase National Park, a scenic expanse of land that’s rife with short-beaked echidnas, long-nosed fur seals and a wealth of other species. Meanwhile, serious wildlife aficionados can spring for a three-day Conservation Connection tour. In addition to exploring renowned natural sites like Stokes Bay and the Cygnet Valley, this itinerary also offers the opportunity to meet with esteemed wildlife experts for a deep dive on the physiology of Kangaroo Island’s most iconic mammals.
