Original Red Bus Company celebrates 15 years of touring Cyprus

Original Red Bus

The renowned “Original Red Bus Company”, the first open top bus service offering tourists tours within the Famagusta district, celebrated on Thursday 15 years of continued operation in Cyprus.

Established in 2008 by two Britons, Dave Williams from London and Dave Tutton from Manchester, the bus has been a point of reference for generations of tourists visiting Cyprus, particularly from the UK.

In a statement released for the occasion, the founders recalled the difficulties they had at the beginning of their journey.

“Gaining approval to carry paying passengers on open-top buses required extensive negotiations with the ministry of transport, leading to changes in the law,” the statement said.

“Additionally, the bus had to undergo further modifications, to comply with the Motor Vehicle Test requirements mandated by the ministry before we were allowed to even apply for licences to operate.”

Over the years, the two Britons set the goal to uncover the history and culture of the island to visitors.

“Our tours serve as a unique way to delve into Cypriot history, culture, traditions, and everyday life.

“Along the way, passengers have the opportunity to shop, savour local products, pass through quaint villages, and learn about the captivating island of Cyprus. Designed to be educational and informative, passengers are guided through the often unknown history of Cyprus,” the statement said.

The company was also awarded the coveted TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for ten consecutive years prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Additionally, we have also been awarded a Commitment to Tourism award which recognised our long term aims.”

The company now offers customers three different tours, namely the “Divided Line”, “Varosha Experience” or “Famagusta/Varosha View tours”, all operating throughout the summer season.

“Over the past 15 years, we have been deeply grateful for the support of thousands of passengers, our local community and our loyal staff,” the statement continued.

To mark the 15-year anniversary, the company is offering a “Divided Line Tour” for the price of €15 on July 1. Interested people can book a spot by calling +357 96423602 or at https://www.theoriginalredbus.com .

Red Bus Tour, Protaras

Staying at Protaras, we went on The Red Bus tour of the villages on an open top bus and it was a great way to see the area with Helen, the driver and Alan, a very knowledgeable guide. He kept up a very fascinating and sometimes humorous 21/2 hour commentary. We stopped about halfway for a comfort break and were offered some fresh fruit and could buy drinks and ice cream. We drove along the Green Line with the lookout posts and looked over to the abandoned city of Famagusta. This was a good value half day trip and one we were very glad to have done. Terry & Evelyn

I got it right, we went on the REDBUS to famagusta this week after people in the hotel telling us to watch out, there is another red open top bus that goes to Famagusta and a wast of money, no information , not even bothered about you, just want the money. So we went to an agent and book the Original REDBUS that has been operating for 7 years. It was brilliant all the staff look after you and tell you all you need to know. We even went to swim with Turtles because they supply Mask and Snorkles free of charge. 5 euros more but well worth it. MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR THE RED BUS THAT HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR MANY YEARS.

we did both the village and full day tours. both were fun, educational without being too serious and took us to places we would not have seen on our own., well worth the time if you get the chance but watch out a new company is doing the same route, nowhere need as good and not officially supported. make sure you book redbus and not the greek speaking aphrodite tour.

Just had another fantastic holiday in cyprus with my husband and our daughter, last year my husband and I went on the village tour with the REDBUS, absolutely brillant trip, couldnt fault it, went on with Helen and Alan. So this year we wanted to book for the very popular Famagusta Day Trip with the REDBUS. Someone in the hotel told me to go and book it in the office across the road, Aprhodite Tours, so i booked for famagusta, paid our money, got my ticket for 2 days after. A bus turned up, I thought it was stranged, the courier was speaking into the microphone in 3 languages, i spoke with others on the bus who informed me that this is a new trip and only started last week with Aphrodite Tours. I was committeed so we went on the trip. BIG MISTAKE, absolutely rubbish was the Aphrodite Tour, only 1/2 a day. Seeming Aphrodite Tours have their own open top bus. Got back to resort, no time to go on the ORIGINAL REDBUS, the REDBUS with the Tripadvisor 2013/14 Certifiicate of Excellence awarded. What a mistake i made and when we return next year i will make sure i book the original redbus. If you going to book an open top tour, please make sure you book the original Redbus. Thank you.

Did the village tour last week and just wish I had been able to do the Famagusta trip too...well worth the money.Amazing seeing the ghost village and the resort of varosha which is also deserted since the turkish invasion....brilliantly hosted in a fun and informative way..would recommend to anyone!!!

Did the daytrip to Famagusta, and learnt so much. The old city with its ruined churches is beautiful, in a slightly sad way. When you get to the ghost town, it becomes really sad. There are all these bombed out buildings, right behind a stunning beach, where people are sunbathing, rather surreal. If you want to learn more about the 1974 invasion, as we did, then this is definitely the trip for you.

The Heavenly Kingdom on Red Square at Spring Twilight

The Heavenly Kingdom on Red Square at Spring Twilight

The view of Pokrovsky Sobor (Intersession cathedral), the original name of St. Basil's Cathedral, on Red Square in Moscow, when lights were just on against the darkening sky at the begining of April, 2014. The church's design is based on deep religious symbolism and was meant to be an architectural representation of the New Jerusalem - the Heavenly Kingdom described in the Book of Revelation of St. John the Divine.

The famous St. Basil's Cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible and built on the edge of Red Square between 1555 and 1561. The cathedral was built to commemorate Ivan the Terrible's successful military campaign against the Tartar Mongols in 1552 in the besieged city of Kazan. Victory came on the feast day of the Intercession of the Virgin, so the Tsar chose to name his new church the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat, after the moat that ran beside the Kremlin. The church was given the nickname "St. Basil's" after the "holy fool" Basil the Blessed (1468-1552), who was hugely popular at that time with the Muscovites masses and even with Ivan the Terrible himself.

St. Basil's is a delightful array of swirling colors and redbrick towers. Its design comprises nine individual chapels, each topped with a unique onion dome and each commemorating a victorious assault on the city of Kazan. In 1588 the ninth chapel was erected to house the tomb of the church's namesake, Basil the Blessed. The eight onion dome-topped towers are positioned around a central, ninth spire, forming an eight-point star. The number eight carries great religious significance; it denotes the day of Christ's Resurrection (the eighth day by the ancient Jewish calendar) and the promised Heavenly Kingdom - the kingdom of the eighth century, which will begin after the second coming of Christ. The eight-point star itself symbolizes the Christian Church as a guiding light to mankind, showing us the way to the Heavenly Jerusalem and it represents the Virgin Mary, depicted in Orthodox iconography with a veil decorated with three eight-pointed stars. The cathedral's star-like plan carries yet more meaning - the star consisting of two superimposed squares, which represent the stability of faith, the four corners of the earth, the four Evangelists and the four equal-sided walls of the Heavenly City.
