Tiffany Haddish Delivered an Important Line for Taylor Swift at Her Concert

O n the first night of Taylor Swift’s long-awaited Reputation tour, the “Look What You Made Me Do” singer made a number of statements — from thanking Katy Perry for an olive branch on Instagram to explaining her current perspective on getting spammed with snakes .

But besides her tour openers Charli XCX and Camila Cabello, there was one more woman who appeared onstage with Swift in a surprise for all: comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish , of Girls Trip acclaim.

Haddish and Swift were both guests on the same night of Saturday Night Live back in November 2017. They bonded during their moment on the show; Haddish even told a story about Swift cooking her a dinner of soul food around that time.

But it was still an unexpected moment for fans when Haddish popped up as a pre-recorded part of an interlude during one of Swift’s show’s segments. “Taylor can’t come to the phone right now,” Haddish reportedly says, broadcasted on the video screen. “Because she’s dead!” (That, of course, is a now-famous line from Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.”)

Swift’s Tuesday night show at Glendale, Arizona’s University of Phoenix Stadium kicked off her months-long stadium tour of North America, continuing on next to California, where hopefully a new crowd of eager fans will be blessed with Haddish’s line delivery once more.

Why Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’ Tour Is Her Finest Yet

By Rob Sheffield

Rob Sheffield

The biggest moment in Taylor Swift ‘s amazing Reputation stadium tour turns out to be one of the quietest. Near the end of the night, Swift sits at the piano by herself to play a few elusively familiar chords. “You might be wondering why there are so many snakes everywhere,” she says. The song she’s playing ends up being the 2010 Speak Now classic “Long Live,” which she transforms into a medley with the Reputation finale “New Year’s Day” – two of her best, from very different phases of her artistic evolution, but songs with a common emotional ground, whether it’s about “fighting dragons” or snakes. She eases back and forth between the songs, from the lush adolescent romanticism of “Long Live” into the mundane domestic detail of “New Year’s Day,” right up to the hook line: “I had the time of my life … with you.” What a moment – a powerhouse performance that made all the different Taylors sound like part of the same story.

Swift kicked off the first night of her hotly awaited Reputation tour last night at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, in front of 60,000 fans, and for the most part she went epic, with giant inflatable cobras, pyro, multiple stages and hordes of dancers. As always, she leaned hard into the new material, doing almost everything on the new Reputation (the one she left out was “So It Goes”), yet with her own uniquely intimate touch. This might be her most astounding tour yet – even when she’s aiming for maximum stadium-rock razzle-dazzle bombast, she gives it all the vibe of a mass communion. She didn’t reach deep into her back catalog, beyond a few earth-shaking surprises like “Long Live” or her solo-acoustic revival of “All Too Well.” Even when she goes back to the oldies, she sticks to her fanatical commitment to making them new. No pop star goes to such absurd extremes to avoid repeating herself, even when repeating herself would be more than good enough. The girl just likes a challenge, even if that means she wants to stand under a surreal inflatable snake to sing her heartfelt confessions about autumn leaves and maple lattes.

The theme, as she did mention a time or two, was snakes. Not since Jim Morrison was alive has any rock star gone so overboard with the herpetological symbolism. As she explained, “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on. And then a lot of people called me a lot of things on social media. And I went through some really low times for a while because of it.” But for Swift – as so often – there was a lesson to be learned in this harsh experience. “You shouldn’t care so much if you feel misunderstood by a lot of people who don’t know you, as long as you feel understood by people who do know you, who will show up for you, the people who see you as a human being…it’s you . You did that for me.”

She picked up her acoustic guitar for “Dancing With Our Hands Tied,” noting, “You guys have stuck with me through so many musical changes. You’ve let me play – you’ve let me evolve.” There were gasps through the crowd as she followed that with the opening chord of “All Too Well,” saying, “I thought I would play this song that you seem to request more than any others. It would be so cool if you sang as loud as you possibly could.” No encouragement was needed. She dashed over to the other side stage to do “Blank Space,” whereupon a male dancer in a hoodie brought her a sheer black dress and wrapped it around her. She asked the crowd, “Do you like my dress?,” which naturally led to “Dress.”

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet

During a clever snippet of “Should’ve Said No” she rode a serpent back to the main stage for the home stretch. “Call It What You Want” became a moody performance with a video backdrop of news headlines – which was probably the only time all night the word “squad” came up – while “Getaway Car” became a desert-noir set piece. The end came a little suddenly, with “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” restyled into a medley with “We Ae Never Getting Back Together.” The song didn’t necessarily feel like a resolution, musically or emotionally, and despite how well it worked as a comic romp – all Tay’s back-up singers joining in for “therein lies the issue” – it was jarring when the house lights came up afterward. No encore, just a coda on the video screen: “And in the death of her reputation, she felt truly alive.”

Swift is always an artist who feels compelled to swerve somewhere new – even in those moments where she seems like the only one in the room who wouldn’t be delighted with more of the same Old Taylor tricks. She just isn’t content to be a More of the Same artist. In a show that was packed with highlights, “All Too Well” was the moment it was impossible to beat – it’s just the kind of song that can’t be topped, and there was something sweet about the way Swift temporarily surrendered her constant urge to remake and remodel, just playing the song on acoustic guitar. As her spiritual uncle Bruce Springsteen might say, she decided for a moment to stand back and let it all be. Everybody in the stadium was wired to her voice and guitar. The only person I noticed who wasn’t singing along with “All Too Well” was a little kid who was mesmerized by the confetti in the air, still floating to the floor from “Shake It Off” a few minutes earlier. She twirled around just grabbing each piece of confetti that floated by. She was as rapt in the moment as any of us.

“Ready For It?” “I Did Something Bad” “Gorgeous” “Style”/”Love Story”/”You Belong With Me” “Look What You Made Me Do” “End Game” “King of My Heart” “Delicate” “Shake It Off” “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” “All Too Well” “Blank Space” “Dress” “Bad Blood”/ “Should’ve Said No” “Don’t Blame Me” “Long Live”/ “New Year’s Day” “Getaway Car” “Call It What You Want” “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”/”This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things”

All the Moments You Need to See From Taylor Swift's Reputation Tour Opening Night

By Christopher Rosa

Image may contain Taylor Swift Human Person Clothing and Apparel

Taylor Swift kicked off her Reputation Stadium Tour last night (May 8) in Glendale, Arizona, and it was a spectacle. Choreography, pyrotechnics, killer live vocals—Swift delivered roughly two hours of pure pop bliss, and her legion of fans lived for it.

They're also living for a few moments that happened in between the songs too—like Swift calling out Kim Kardashian or her pointing to boyfriend Joe Alwyn in the crowd. It wouldn't be a Taylor Swift concert without some juicy tidbits, right? And the Reputation Stadium Tour opening night had plenty. Here are all the ones you need to see.

A quick refresher on that drama: Swift claimed two years ago that she hadn't approved certain lyrics Kanye West wrote about her in his song "Famous," though a Snapchat video Kardashian leaked suggested otherwise. Swift doubled down on her stance, though, which prompted Kardashian—and basically all of social media—to brand her with the snake emoji.

Swift gave a short but poignant speech about all this last night. “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media and it caught on," Swift said. "And then a lot of people called me a lot of names on social media. And I went through some really low times for a while because of it. I went through some times when I didn’t know if I was gonna get to do this anymore and I guess the snakes…I wanted to send a message to you guys that if someone uses name calling to bully you on social media and even if a lot of people jump on board with it, that doesn’t have to beat you. It can strengthen you instead.”

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Not in real life, but Swift recruited her to say the classic, "The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now" line in a video projection during "Look What You Made Me Do." Haddish revealed last year she had dinner at Swift's house after they did Saturday Night Live together and became friends.

Well, I guess that confirms who the song's about. Eagle-eyed fans caught Alwyn in a baseball cap bopping along in the audience to "Gorgeous." At the end of the song, Swift pointed at him, causing the already lit crowd to lose their minds even more.

Which is a pretty huge deal for Swifties. The Red deep cut is considered by many to be Swift's best song, and some fans thought an extended version of it would appear on Reputation. (The original song is apparently eight minutes long.) Unfortunately, that didn't happen, but Swift made up for that by adding an acoustic version of the song to her set. Naturally, it's stunning.

Taking cues from Madonna—who's famous for reinventing her hit songs in concert—Swift included many of her staples in the Reputation Stadium Tour set list but gave them a twist. She performed "Bad Blood" with elements of "Should've Said No"; a medley of "Style," "Love Story," and "You Belong with Me"; and a piano moment that blended "Long Live" and "New Year's Day."

This might've been the most fun performance of the night. Both Cabello and Charli XCX sang verses of Swift's hit 2014 song, and they all joined in bombastically for the chorus. Pop star friendships!

If the Reputation Stadium Tour 's opening night is any indication, we're in for a very fun next couple of months. Are you ready for it?

Since L.A. is the home of so many famous Hollywood stars, tons more big celebrities enjoying the concert are popping up on social media – the latest being Tiffany Haddish having a girls' night with Cameron Diaz and Zoe Saldaña.

I don’t know about you, but I had absolutely no idea this trio would exist. However, it’s great to see these three powerhouse actresses enjoying Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour from the floor of Sofi Stadium. Check out Haddish’s hilarious video watching the show as Diaz and Saldaña chill next to her:

Honestly, watch this entire Instagram video, it’s too good. Haddish posted a bit of her experience with her fellow actresses, dancing to “no body, no crime” of all songs with drinks in hand. Haddish was completely vibing with Swift’s show in the evermore segment, and I can’t imagine how much the section was getting down once her Reputation or 1989 eras began.

Haddish had funny commentary to share with fans while she watched the show too, quipping that Swift “got the woods in the middle of Inglewood” as the song transitioned to “willow.” The actress also compared the section of the tour to her latest movie, Haunted Mansion along with saying she was definitely going to lose her voice by the end of the show.

The comedian shared a group photo with Cameron Diaz and Zoe Saldaña at the show too. Check it:

Snakes, tilted stages, and Tiffany Haddish: A report from night one of Taylor Swift's Reputation tour

Alex is a Senior Editor at EW.

GLENDALE, ARIZ. – Taylor Swift was ready to talk about it. Near the end of a captivating opening night performance of the Reputation world tour at the University of Phoenix Stadium on Tuesday, the 28-year-old pop star sat down at her piano and addressed the proverbial elephant (well, snake) in the room. “A couple of years ago, someone called me a snake on social media,” she said, “and it caught on.”

Swift was of course referring to the long-running feud between herself and Kanye West, specifically a 2016 incident where West’s wife, Kim Kardashian West, threw snake emojis her way following a dispute over the rapper’s song “Famous.” It was a dark period for the singer, and she ended up retreating from the spotlight almost entirely. Her adoption of a snake motif was a way to not only help take back the narrative she had lost, but to try something fresh. “I wanted to send a message that if someone uses name-calling to bully you on social media it doesn’t have to defeat you,” she said to the capacity crowd of 59,157. “It can strengthen you instead.”

Swift transferred that strength into her latest album, the multiplatinum Reputation , as well as its accompanying tour, a two-hour-plus, 24-song set that features various serpentine forms on stage and screen: towering, inflatable pythons; gold-embossed cobras; scaly Potter-esque visions projected on the Jumbotron — all in all, enough snakes to populate a Raiders of the Lost Ark reboot (even the VIP section was named the Snake Pit).

In person, the images reinforced a new undercurrent for the artist. Her last album 1989, and its subsequent tour, was a pop sugar rush. But on this run, there’s something a bit darker and more elusive happening: an artist grappling with the shift in her once squeaky-clean public image.

The night began with a video clip depicting Swift surrounded by paparazzi interspersed with news anchor narration of the singer’s latest escapades, before an a cappella tease of “Ready for It” kicked in. The singer, bathed in red light, emerged in silhouette from a small opening in the stage. Her dancers followed suit, trotting out in medieval-inspired, midnight-black attire, surrounding Swift while grabbing, pushing, and slithering their way around her. Her next song, “I Did Something Bad,” another cut off Reputation , included flames and strobe lights. Later, her dancers wheeled out Swift’s own tilted stage — a reference to the first line of “Look What You Made Me Do” and its not-so-veiled shot at West’s infamous Life of Pablo tour.

But as the night wore on, the tone began to lighten, as Swift returned to more familiar territory. Maybe the old Taylor wasn’t dead after all. (Speaking of, the Reputation tour has some leftover flourishes from her last run of shows, including those famed light-up wristbands that are synced to the beat of the music.) She playfully sang-rapped on “End Game.” She glided across the stage during “Love Story” and frolicked in front of a giant courtyard fountain and mock manor home during a Gatsby-style soiree with her dancers for “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.” Openers Charli XCX and Camilla Cabello joined in on the fun during “Shake It Off.” And there was even a brief sighting of comedian Tiffany Haddish, who appeared via video screen to recite the “…old Taylor is dead” line off “Look What You Made Me Do.”

While there are still some early opening tour kinks to work out — the sound was a bit muddled in parts, where Swift’s vocals were drowned out by an over-amplified snare drum or bass line — this was, first and foremost, a pop star back with something to prove. One of her most impressive traits as a performer is her knack for making a concert held in a gargantuan space feel more like a casual hang with friends. “I was able to see what you guys were posting online, seeing what you guys were hoping would happen on tour, and a lot of those ideas ended up on the drawing board,” she said, before diving into “Dancing With My Hands Tied.”

Swift may have retreated from the spotlight — why talk to the press when you can produce your own newspaper in confetti form? — but she’s always been lurking, keeping a watchful, curious eye on her massive fanbase, commenting occasionally on Tumblr. Events of the past few years may have been painful, but it’s clear she’s come to the realization that the answer she was looking for all along was right there in her audience.

“I learned a really important lesson that I’ve been telling you from the stage for 10 years,” she said. “I think that the lesson is, that you shouldn’t care so much if you feel misunderstood by a lot of people who don’t know you, as long as you feel understood by the people who do know you, who will show up, people who see you as a human being, so thank you, thank you, thank you, for taking the time to get to know me, for seeing me as a human being. That’s you, you did that.”

No one knows Swift fans better than Swift does — and the opinions of those outside her circle no longer matter. When she exited the stage and the crowd filed out, a final slide was left on the screen: “and in the death of her reputation, she felt truly alive.”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Reputation’ Tour Has Bad Blood, Good Will, Sex Appeal and Serpents

Taylor Swift performs during the Reputation Stadium Tour opener at University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale, ArizTaylor Swift in Concert - , AZ, Glendale, USA - 08 May 2018

“So you’re wondering why there are so many snakes onstage, right?” Taylor Swift asked the crowd on the opening night of her “Reptiles” — sorry, “Reputation” tour. It’d crossed the collective mind of the capacity crowd of 59,000 inside University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. on May 8. The golden snake microphone might have required a bit of squinting to make out, but it was a fairly in-your-face move to position three enormous inflatable snakes around the stadium, hovering over the two rear stages as well as the main one. It’s not like anybody needs  a good reason to float over a football field’s worth of fans in a snake-shaped cage, but Swift intended to explain how pop’s most celebrated cat lady had come to claim cobras as her new spirit animal.

“Someone called me a snake on social media, and it caught on,” Swift said, not even coming close to naming a name but clearly referencing the moment when Kim Kardashian, injecting herself into the feud over Kanye West’s “Naked” video, subtweeted Swift with some snake emoji, uncoiling a whole Twitter campaign meant to embarrass the singer. “I went through some really low times because of it,” she continued. “I went through some times when I didn’t know if I was gonna get to do this anymore.” Of course, if the bad-rep-embracing “Blank Space” taught us anything, it’s that Swift is wise to the modern way of taking ownership of the epithets used against you. Why call in St. Patrick for an exorcism when you can just go scaly on a massive scale?

Swift didn’t bring up any molting metaphors, but those are implicit in all the snakiness, too. The recitation about how the old Taylor is deceased and can’t take our call was present, as expected, in “Look What You Made Me Do” — delivered in concert not by Swift but Tiffany Haddish, in a crowd-pleasing video cameo. The two-hour show had plenty of fierceness to go with that, especially in the early going. But it still had plenty of moments where you would have sworn it was pre-decedent Taylor on the line… the guileless Swift we remember from two or three skins ago. There will be bad blood, and a few kraken to unleash, but at the beating heart of it all, we’re still left not so much with dragons or defensiveness but in the endearingly earnest presence of pop’s most approachable superstar.

Last fall’s “Reputation” was an album of many love-and-war juxtapositions. The backlash from the whole Kimye-gate brouhaha had a creative silver lining, in that it gave Swift some newfound rejection to write about — the public kind — right at about the point she was apparently falling in love and no longer finding fodder in romantic schisms. As a result of these seemingly contradictory experiences, “Reputation” ended up feeling like the most self-protective  and  most tenderly openhearted album she’s ever done.

This tour has those same contradictions to deal with, seeing as the set list is dominated by 14 of the 15 songs from “Reputation” (omitting only “So It Goes”), with 10 oldies — most of them also from the Max Martin/Shellback school of programming — squeezed into thematically appropriate intervals. The demands of modern choreography and ever more massive production design dictate that some of the emotional underpinnings are going to remain just that. But she uses her two hours on stage to paint a rewardingly holistic picture, even if there’s a lot of distance to travel between naive Taylor (“Love Story”), sexy Taylor (“Dress”) and karma-is-mine-sayeth-the-Taylor Taylor (“Look What You Made Me Do”).

The vast scaffolding on stage, sometimes visible behind the translucent 172-by-40-foot video screen enveloping it and sometimes not, suggested some kind of enormous underground city. Taking up residence two or three stories up was her usually unseen band, who would very occasionally send a lead guitarist down as emissary. Her dancers get to display a lot more personality, though it was a ways into the set before they warmed up from their initially militaristic, deep-maroon look and manner into warm, playful foils. They, too, receded when Swift took an airborne trip in that snaky cage to her rear stages for some more intimate material.

One of the dancers did follow her to the back of the stadium when it was time for her to do “Dress,” the latest album’s PG-13 sensual reverie. The white-robed figure ran complementary circles around her, with artificially extended arms weaving folds of white fabric through the air. For much of the show, Swift had worn a succession of feisty one-pieces, like a Wonder Woman who favored darker colors. But for the more erotic “Dress,” she added a sheer black gown to the ensemble, somehow getting sexier by adding a layer. As the interpretive dancer teased her, it was almost as if Gal Gadot had been given an abstract love scene in the middle of all that WWII super heroism.

But it’s the Alone Time With Tay on the other rear stage that most fans will treasure most. There was a two-song solo segment with just Swift and her guitar, half of which consisted of her proving that the recent album’s “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” worked as well acoustically without the Max Martin-izing. The other half will apparently be a wild-card slot. On opening night, she acceded to online demand by resurrecting the rarely played breakup ballad “All Too Well,” the song that’s like a secret handshake among True Swifties. (In two subsequent shows, she’s replaced that with “Wildest Dreams” and “The Best Day.”) During these two songs, she put ona Nudie’s-style jacket that perhaps was meant to subliminally refer back to her country days… although Porter Wagoner probably never had a coat with rhinestones formed into a coiled snake.

She also spent a few minutes alone at a piano, turning the fan anthem “Long Live” and the romantic ballad “New Year’s Day” into a contented medley of acceptance. Mash-ups also occurred during segments that were fully produced and full of more nervous energy; everyone’s celebrity-feud favorite, “Bad Blood,” morphed into her a song of teen betrayal from her debut album, “Should’ve Said No,” maybe to reinforce that life never stops being high school.

Swift occasionally played older sister to her audience. “I guess with the snakes,” she told the crowd, taking a pause at that piano, “I wanted to send a message to you guys that if someone uses name-calling to bully you, and even if a lot of people jump on board with it, that doesn’t have to defeat you. It can strengthen you instead.”

It was a nicely maternal moment. But it was also nice to see Swift prove that she’s not so much older and wiser that she won’t troll back. Midway through the set, Swift let her inner brat out to play with a “Shake It Off” that turned into a slumber party, with opening acts Camila Cabello and Charli XCX returned to the stage. That spirit returned at the very end, when the older hit “We Are Never Getting Back Together” segued into a taunting deep track of more recent vintage, “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” which just happens to be a blatant eff-you to her foremost celebrity tormentor. No longer bound by either choreography or maturity, Swift and the dancers cavorted in a fountain, offering up a figurative middle finger, and the impishness of the celebration felt liberating — a capper that felt almost punk-rock in foregoing any usual show-closing stateliness. The snake inflatables had already been put to sleep for the night, but you could imagine them purring.

The “Reputation” tour reaches the third of its scheduled 36 cities with stops at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena Friday and Saturday night.

Celebrities are among the thousands of fans who have filled stadiums to “shake it off” with the one and only Taylor Swift.

The Grammy-winning singer kicked off her Eras Tour, her most expansive tour yet, in March and has been traveling all across the United States, making stops in cities to perform for sold-out shows. It’s the pop star’s sixth headlining tour, which is described as a journey through all of her musical eras, including Fearless , Lover , Evermore , 1989 , Speak Now , Reputation and more. In total, Swift will perform 146 shows across five continents throughout the tour.

After every performance, fans have flooded social media with highlights from each night. Movie review.

Taylor Swift is not your typical “girl next door” anymore. She’s more like that “all around the world” kinda girl, someone whose popularity has the ability to bring together thousands of fans and sell out stadiums.

And she’s good at it, too. Swift’s latest tour for her sixth studio album, reputation , brought in more than $345 million from concerts across the U.S., Europe and Asia—53 venues total.

But fans who missed the live show can still attend a digital one. Because thanks to Netflix, T-Swift’s last tour lives on. Now, all you need to experience Taylor at her highest grossing tour to date is a Netflix subscription.

A Darker Shade of Red

When I sat down to watch this 2-hour concert film, I had a few expectations in mind, having seen Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran in Philadelphia on her Red Tour. But this tour was something in and of itself, something noticeably different.

This show is a bit darker. A bit more cinematic. Fully charged. During Swift’s Red Tour, I felt as if I were part of a huge party, filled with confetti and flying beach balls. Nothing but positivity. But the vibe of this streaming concert experience isn’t quite the same, which is evident right from the start.

The film opens with a compilation of rumors and negative opinions of Taylor streaming from the speakers. Set to a gray and black backdrop, the screen shows Swift moving through crowds, at concerts and playing the guitar as a teen. As negative words increase, so does the ominous music. The word “reputation” is repeated over and over. Finally, Taylor stands in a flowing leather dress. And it begins.

The stage glows with red lights that shine through a contrasting black and gray as Taylor’s silhouette becomes the main focus. Clad in a black, sparkly leather leotard she asks, “Are you ready for it?” As gray smoke shoots upward and the bass drops, Taylor swings her hips and makes it very clear that she couldn’t care less about her perceived reputation.

Let the Games Begin

From the start, it feels as if Taylor’s energy on this tour (and album) is built on a kind of defiance. She seems determined to live life on her own terms, despite what others may think. In some ways, that message of empowerment and independence could be heard as a positive one. But not all of her songs are ones you’d want to hear your 10-year-old singing.

Plugged In has chronicled the slow thematic shift that Taylor has made over her career, from the earnest “happily ever after” fairy tale songs of her teen years to something more like “happily never after” in her young adult years. It’s not that she doesn’t want true love; in fact she opens up to her audience about her desire for what’s real in life—and many of her songs express this sentiment. Still, other songs express the ups and downs, the good and the bad and the intimate nitty-gritty of her high-profile romances.

Songs such as “… Ready For It?,” “I Did Something Bad,” “Don’t Blame Me,” “So It Goes,” “King of My Heart” and “Dress” all focus on one thing: sex. On these tracks, Taylor opens up like never before about what goes on with her lovers behind closed doors.

She’s also interested in revenge. “Look What You Made Me Do” and “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” drag into the light exes whom she feels have stabbed her in the back, as well as voicing her plans never again to be called the fool. Meanwhile, “Dancing With Our Hands Tied” and “Getaway Car” focus on dysfunctional relationships that didn’t have what it took to last.

But just when it might seem as if lust, cynicism and heartbreak are Swift’s only messages these days, the sassy and fun-loving Taylor arrives to sing about a crush in “Gorgeous,” and a man who, it seems, has won her heart for good in songs such as “Delicate,” “End Game,” “Call It What You Want” and “New Year’s Day.”

It’s All About the Show

Onstage, Taylor’s backed by a talented entourage of male and female singers and dancers decked out in various (sometimes provocative or revealing) costumes. At one point, a group of male dancers comes traipsing out, shirtless and banging on drums. Taylor herself changes into multiple outfits that are bold, unique and sometimes suggestive (as are a few of her dance moves). Camila Cabello and Charli XCX join her for a few minutes onstage as well. And there are even quiet moments where Taylor is left alone with a guitar or the piano—purely acoustic.

And amid all the shiny lights, colorful outfits and high-energy choreography, Taylor still forges a real connection with the audience. Her fans obviously adore her. We see some fans crying, while others shout their love from afar or wear crazy attire in obvious attempts to catch the camera’s eye.

Taylor also opens up about the need for real friends and relationships and the importance of pushing through tough spots in one’s life. She gives shout-outs to her crew, and honors the vocalists, dancers and the band that faithfully help her execute the vision. Everyone is made to feel included.

As someone who grew up listening to Taylor, I really appreciate these positive elements in this concert film. Fans who are familiar with these songs may want to bust out their dancing shoes. (I did.)

That said, Taylor’s show certainly isn’t as squeaky clean as it once might have been. Songs deal with subjects such as sex, alcohol and desire. Some lyrics include profanities such as the s-word and “d–n.” And, as mentioned, dance moves can get a bit sultry.

There’s no denying that Taylor Swift puts on a remarkable arena concert, as this Netflix show skillfully documents. But it’s still a show that has some content issues for younger fans, and parents (some of whom may have grown up with Taylor, as I did) need to be aware of those issues before buying a “ticket” for this Netflix tour.
