Tiffany Haddish's surprise cameo in Taylor Swift's Reputation tour is the perfect addition to "Look What You Made Me Do"

To kick off her massive Reputation stadium tour, Taylor Swift pulled out all the stops. She acknowledged the 2016 Kimye drama! She pointed at her boyfriend Joe Alwyn during “Gorgeous”! She shared the stage with Tiffany Haddish…kind of! Haddish made a surprise “cameo” during the concert, but it was nothing like Swift’s 1989 tour, in which the singer paraded her famous friends down the stage. Haddish didn’t actually appear in the flesh, so to speak.

During “Look What You Made Me Do,” Haddish appeared in a pre-recorded skit to perform the now legendary “Sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Because she’s dead,” line.

Tbh, enlisting Haddish to perform that interlude is a genius albeit surprising choice. It’s surprising because Haddish seems like she’s too busy conquering Hollywood but, then again, Swift seems to know every famous woman ever, so maybe it’s not that surprising at all. It’s likely that the two met when Haddish hosted Saturday Night Live and Swift was the musical guest. In their joint promos, they seemed very taken with each other.

Bless the fans for capturing Haddish’s on-screen moment during Swift’s Reputation tour.

We wonder if Haddish will always appear in Swift’s show or if a new celeb pal will perform the “Why? Because she’s dead” monologue each night? One night Haddish delivers the line, the next night Blake Lively does, the following night maybe Katy Perry (they’re friends again if you didn’t know). The possibilities are endless! Swift, call us when you need a new artistic director, we’re free.

TCB Debriefing 9/8/23: Typist Artist Pirate King, Tiffany Haddish’s Pay for Movie Debut, Hasan Minhaj Tour, Julie Seabaugh

1. While the Brits were the originators of “kitchen sink realism”, perhaps their M.O. now is more accurately described as “bathroom sink irony”, a more deeply personal, yet acutely satirical view on British life that’s either wryly bittersweet or woebegone hilarious. The latest entry to join this wave might be Carol Morley’s Typist Artist Pirate King , a dramedy following the latter days of celebrated real life artist Audrey Amiss and a journey she took with her psychiatric nurse. Kelly MacDonald and Monica Dolan star here in the newest UK comedy export to make you feel all the feels. Take a gander at the UK trailer here for its UK rollout (and maybe VOD?) to start on Oct. 27th .

2. Before launching in to undeniable stardom in Girls Trip , Tiffany Haddish didn’t get paid a cent for the first movie she starred in as it was a non-union role leaving her nothing more than a handful of DVD copies of the movie from the producers for her to sell ( Variety ). Just a friendly reminder about the importance of staying #unionstrong.

3. These are the dates and cities for Hasan Minhaj’s Off With His Head tour. Get tickets here quick as they’re already going very, very fast.

4. Our good friend Julie Seabaugh , who just happens to be, for our money, one of comedy journalism’s most preeminent voices, just published a book of her best interview and pieces, many of which are in their unedited, full form (i.e. everything that  should have been fit to print). Wonderfully titled A Tight 20: Two Decades of Comedy Journalism , it is a must read/have for comedy fans of all kinds.

5. We remember a showrunner once telling us that it’s “show business, not show art”, though it’s clear now, more than ever, that the show business can’t really run without the show art.

A&E Set to Debut Two Part Black Comedy History Doc “Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution”

Undeniably, there is a wave of documentaries examining the history of comedy from every possible angle and at every degree. From covering individuals such as Dick Gregory, George Carlin , and even Bill Cosby to focusing on such changing attitudes in the form through the lens of 9/11 with  Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 , there is an ever growing fascination of the inner workings of inciting laughter.

A&E is putting their hat in the ring here with Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat & Time Studios’ Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution , a two-part doc series that will trace the lineage of black comedians that defied racial barriers and sought to skewer the absurd inequalities that were just taken for granted, especially the ones based off the amount of melanin you had in your skin.

The likes of Tiffany Haddish, W. Kamau Bell, Michael Che, Steve Harvey, Sherri Shepherd, Wayne Brady, Aisha Tyler, DL Hughley, Amber Ruffin, and Katt Williams amongst other comics and historians will weigh in on the oft-overlooked milestones of black comedy (just compare Mike Binder’s The Comedy Store to Phat Tuesdays: The Hip Hop Era of Comedy ).

Take a gander at what’s to come with this teaser for  Right to Offend here , then look for its premiere on A&E on Jun. 29th & 30th at 9PM (then presumably streaming on aetv.com afterwards).

Dive Back Into the Fantastical World of Tuca & Bertie with Their Season 2 Trailer

The time for the second season of the wild and phenomenal Tuca & Bertie  is nigh. For awhile, we were all left wondering what the fate of the show would be as Netflix had relinquished any chance for a second season on their platform.

Thankfully, Lisa Hanawalt and company along with, of course, Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish , as Bertie and Tuca, all got their shot at a cooler network, Adult Swim . Once more, the wait for brand new Tuca & Bertie  isn’t much longer as Jun. 13th has been set as the season 2 premiere date.

After some animatics, sneak peeks, etc. over the last several months, here’s a full gander at what’s in store for Tuca & Bertie or, rather, what they have in store for their lush animated world with the official season 2 trailer .

tiffany haddish tour uk

Get Your First Full Sneak Peek at Tuca & Bertie Season 2

For a little while, we were left grieving the news that Tuca & Bertie wouldn’t be picked up for another season at Netflix. Then, Adult Swim gave Lisa Hanawalt and her beautiful, hysterical, otherworldly creation  Tuca & Bertie another season, which we absolutely couldn’t wait for. There was an animatic released last year that gave us a bit of hope and excitement for what’s to come for the oddest bird couple.

Now,  here ‘s a full sneak peek, fully animated and just as charming and wild as you’ve come to expect, of season 2 of Tuca & Bertie .

There’s no specific premiere date (and what use are those anyway as everything changes all the time?), but it looks as though we can expect new episodes to start rolling out this Summer.

Tiffany Haddish Wins a Grammy and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Gets 2 Oscar Noms

Though the Grammys and the Oscars aren’t anywhere nearly dedicated to celebrating comedy in any really big way, there was some good news from both for the art form of comedy.

First off, Tiffany Haddish won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album for the audio version of her Netflix special, Black Mitzvah. Haddish is the first black woman since Whoopi Goldberg won in 1986, a fact that gets adorably revealed here during a taping of Haddish’s current gig as host of Kids Say the Darndest Things . Of the big comedy specials that get Grammy consideration for Best Comedy Album, Haddish definitely earned her Grammy.

How I found out I won a Grammy while working on @KidsSayDarndest I am so Honored to share with the kids. Full situation is on my YouTube page. pic.twitter.com/pYzmt4nIgo — Tiffany Haddish (@TiffanyHaddish) March 15, 2021

Earlier this morning, the nominations for this year’s Oscars were revealed and while there is a lot of talk about the amount of diversity and inclusion throughout all of the nominees. It should also be noted that  Borat Subsequent Moviefilm ‘s breakout co-star  Maria Bakalova earned herself a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination alongside the film’s Best Adapted Screenplay nomination (going to Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Nina Pedrad, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, and Lee Kern ). It’s sort of wild to think of something like  Borat Subsequent Moviefilm  given the still crowded field of heart-wrenching prestige dramas, yet, here we are.

So, even though awards season presents a bunch of the entertainment biz congratulating itself, it does seem like it’s getting marginally better.

Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready Season 2 Gives a First Look

You might have noticed that the flow of brand new comedy specials hasn’t been the way that it used to be early on in 2019. A lack of new specials and a drying up of networks and streaming services’ comedy special reserves have made it so that we don’t even necessarily get a new special every week. That’s just the way things are due to the pandemic and that will just have to be that way for a while longer.

That being said, there’s still specials to be enjoyed, namely the latest edition of Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready . There’s a whole second season lined up featuring comedians handpicked by Haddish herself to highlight. That includes Kimberly Clark (a long time personal favorite of ours), Erin Jackson, Godfrey, Tony Woods, Barbara Carlyle, and Dean Edwards (not to mention the joyful grace of Haddish presenting the whole series).

See for yourself what’s to come with They Ready Season 2 with this very first trailer here , then look for it to start streaming on Netflix on Tues. Feb. 2nd .

Tiffany Haddish Is Launching Her Own ‘She Ready’ Internship Program

So much of Tiffany Haddish’s spirit, both on stage with her comedy and off, is dedicated to uplifting people. Already she has done multiple showcases highlight her favorite comedians that she wants to share with the world via Netflix. She’s similarly motivated to start an internship program branded with her catchphrase, She Ready .

Haddish grew up in the foster care system and she is thusly making that the focus of The She Ready Internship Program . She’s looking to connect “transition-age foster youth with transformative experiences in the media, arts and entertainment industries.” The internships will serve Tiffany’s She Ready Productions has and it’ll kick off next year.

Get First Look at Amazon Comedy ‘Eulogy’ Special “Yearly Departed”

Though eulogies don’t really cross into the territory of comedy specials, this year hasn’t been a time for anything normal. Actually, 2020 is the focus of said special entitled, “Yearly Departed” and is a good-riddance send-off to the year that has and continues and will traumatize all of us living through it.

For 2020 getting kicked to the curb, this special has a marvelous and feisty line-up of comedy folks including Rachel Brosnahan, Tiffany Haddish, Patti Harrison, Natasha Legerro, Sarah Silverman, Natasha Rothwell, Ziwe, and Phoebe Robinson hosting for the evening.

It’s a roast of 2020 at 2020’s funeral and it sure looks like the socially distanced party had a hell of a time letting 2020 know what they thought of it (even though we’ll have to likely deal with so much of 2020 for a good chunk, if not most of, 2021).

Get your first look at YEARLY DEPARTED with its trailer here , then look for it to stream on Amazon Prime on the Eve of New Year’s Eve, Dec. 30th.

And Here Are Your Grammy Comedy Nominees for 2021

You might have seen that the nominees for the 2021 Grammys were announced this morning and, with that, there is just a handful of comedy folks that get the expressed distinction of being nominated for said Grammy. Usually, with how distribution of comedy specials work (i.e. most big time comedy specials get released as comedy albums somehow), comedy specials take up the bulk of the nomination slots and this year is no different (even though they were plenty of worthy stand-up albums that were released only as albums).

This year, the nominees for Best Comedy Album are:

Tiffany Haddish-Black Mitzvah Patton Oswalt-I Love Everything Jim Gaffigan-The Pale Tourist Bill Burr-Paper Tiger Jerry Seinfeld-23 Hours to Kill

All were specials on a big time streaming service and, four of out of the five were on Netflix. Still, Haddish and Oswalt offered up really uplifting specials and Burr got more introspective than he ever has with  Paper Tiger .

Usually, the comedy category for The Grammys gets overshadowed by the dozens and dozens of other categories, but we’ll be watching closely for who wins on the CBS telecast of The Grammy Awards on Jan. 31st.

Tuca & Bertie Season 2 Gets a Sneak Peek of a First Look

Since it looks more and more likely that the world will survive into 2021, there are things we can and will look forward to. A vaccine is at the top of most people’s lists, but a new season of  Tuca & Bertie  is up there.

Fresh from  this past weekend, Tuca & Bertie creator Lisa Hanawalt graciously gave a peek of a sneak peek with an animatic clip from season 2. Tuca & Bertie are together again at a strip club and, as is one of the magical things about this show, it’s a team of plant strippers are on stage.

If you’re having a bit of trouble dreaming up that up, just enjoy the sneak sneak peek here .

Tuca & Bertie Is Being Revived at Adult Swim

It’s pretty clear to us that Tuca & Bertie , the animated series from Lisa Hanawalt that featured Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish’s voices as birds didn’t get enough of a chance over at Netflix. It was such a wildly imaginative, colorful, unique, funny world with a very lovable duo of Tuca & Bertie (that may be the successors to Broad City’s Abbi & Ilana for female friendship on TV?).

Announced this morning , Tuca & Bertie will be getting the greater chances that they deserve over at Adult Swim with an entirely new season due next year. That’s all the details for now, but, go watch/rewatch the inaugural season of Tuca & Bertie over at Netflix to get transported to the wild, lush, and nuanced universe that Hanawalt created.

View this post on Instagram TUCA & BERTIE IS COMING BACK!!! New eps on @adultswim in 2021. Happy Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #tucaandbertie A post shared by Lisa Hanawalt (@lisadraws) on May 22, 2020 at 9:42am PDT

Tiffany Haddish’s Black Mitzvah Is a Triumph of Positivity and Self-Realization

image

Tiffany Haddish ’s latest hour special, Black Mitzvah , dropped on Netflix earlier this week and it’s perhaps the perfect holiday treat as far as comedy specials are concerned.

Though not specifically aimed at the holiday season, the hour captures a still vibrant and unapologetic Haddish through finding her place in being Jewish as well as dealing with her rocketing to genuine stardom (all while being the same she-ready Tiffany you’ve known and loved for years now). In fact, she even gets truly vulnerable in examining that one off-night she had for New Year’s that got blown way out of proportion (cough cough, double standard against female comics, cough) with her signature mirth and levity.

Yet again, Haddish does a rare thing that you see thing in stand-up these days by celebrating life and celebrating yourself, even at life’s inevitable low points. Her closing “dance” number is a pretty great illustration of this. If you haven’t given Tiffany Haddish’s Black Mitzva h a watch already, make your holidays better by doing so soon.

Tiffany Haddish Ready Again with This Trailer for Black Mitzvah

The magic of Tiffany Haddish ’s verve, charm, and unapologetic positivity that has shot her into undeniable stardom is coming around once again with her brand new hour special, Black Mitzvah .

Are you ready? Even though Haddish has a joke about what having “She Ready” as a catchphrase really entails for her, she indeed still ready.

Get a taste of Tiffany Haddish’s Black Mitzvah with  this trailer , then look for it to stream on Netflix on Tues. Dec. 3rd .

Here’s the Trailer for Tiffany Haddish’s Stand-Up Showcase “They Ready”

Tiffany Haddish ’s “she ready” brand is so strong that she Netflix allowed her to handpick a whole line-up of comedians that she could highlight them as, indeed, “they ready”.

It’s a whole diverse line-up of female comedians that Tiffany clearly loves including:  Chaunté Wayans, April Macie, Tracey Ashley, Aida Rodriguez, Flame Monroe and Marlo Williams .

In fact, her gushing over these women is almost enough of a selling point to get you to watch. Also, Tiffany picked well.

Look for Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready next week on Tues. Aug. 13th on Netflix .

Tuca and Bertie Trailer Shows a World That May Be Even Wilder Than BoJack Horseman

Considering Lisa Hanawalt was instrumental to the creation of BoJack Horseman , it had us curious what her own show Tuca & Bertie about two Odd Couple-ish bird ladies would sound/feel/look like and if it would, be at all, similar to BoJack .

Well, this full trailer shows a world that’s, if you can imagine, a little more “out there”, brimming with more vibrant colors, and, in total, a rollicking universe that’s all it’s own with the voices of Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish leading the way.

See for yourself here , then look for episodes of Tuca & Bertie to start streaming on Netflix on Fri. May 3rd .

Here’s a First Look at Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong as Tuca & Bertie from Lisa Hanawalt

One of the shows we were most excited for coming into 2019 is Tuca & Bertie , a sort of Odd-Couple-esque animated series starring two middle-aged birdwomen voiced by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong .

Well, the series premiere is just around the corner ( all episodes start streaming on Friday, May 3rd on Netflix ) and we we’re finally getting a first look into the show in this featurette that shows creator Lisa Hanawalt (who is getting upgraded from her gig at BoJack Horseman ) and stars Haddish and Wong in the recording booth as well as them in their bird women form.

Somehow, we’re even more excited about Tuca & Bertie now.

Tiffany Haddish

Emmy & Grammy award winner Tiffany Haddish has established herself as one of the most sought-after comedic actresses and performers worldwide. Haddish can most recently be seen reprising her role as Detective Danner in the second season of AppleTV’s critically acclaimed murder mystery series The Afterparty , in Disney’s Haunted Mansion , MGM’s Landscape With Invisible Hand, an adaption of MT Anderson’s futuristic sci-fi novel, and Back on the Strip . Prior to this, she starred in Lionsgate’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent opposite Nicholas Cage and Universal’s Easter Sunday. Haddish also voiced the role of Tuca in Adult Swim’s Tuca & Bertie and the role of Aisha in Hulu’s Solar Opposites .

Other recent projects include: starring opposite Oscar Isaac in the critically acclaimed Paul Schrader film The Card Counter, On the Count of Three, alongside Jerrod Carmichael and Netflix’s critically acclaimed Bad Trip , starring alongside Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery. Haddish’s projects in development include Down Undercover , Mystery Girl , Homecoming Queen and The Untitled Flo Jo Biopic.

Haddish is perhaps best known for her breakout role in the smash comedy Girls Trip , where she starred as the scene-stealing “Dina” alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and Regina Hall. Her other film and television work include Here Today, Like A Boss, The Kitchen, Between Two Ferns: The Movie , The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Sponge on the Run, The Secret Life of Pets 2, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, The Angry Birds Movie 2, Night School, Nobody’s Fool, The Oath, hosting both Kids Say the Darndest Things and TBS’ Friday Night Vibes, Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker, The Last O.G. and The Carmichael Show . Haddish also served as host and executive producer of the Emmy-nominated Netflix stand-up comedy series Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready. The series of half-hour comedy specials featuring her friends and long-time comedic collaborators ran for two seasons.

Her Emmy-nominated and Grammy-winning comedy special, Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah , debuted on Netflix in December 2019. Haddish became the second black woman ever to win a Grammy for Outstanding Comedy Album and the first since Whoopi Goldberg won in 1986. Her first stand-up special, Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood was released on Showtime in August 2017. Just three months after the special’s release, Haddish made history by becoming the first black female stand-up comedian to host Saturday Night Live, which earned her the 2018 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.” In June 2018, Haddish took the reins as the host of the MTV Movie and TV Awards , a role that earned her critical acclaim and significant ratings boost for MTV.

Haddish’s first book, a memoir called The Last Black Unicorn , was released in 2018. The book made the New York Times Best Sellers List, and the companion audiobook, narrated by Haddish, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award for “Spoken Word Album.” In 2022 Haddish released her debut picture book Layla, The Last Black Unicorn .

Haddish’s journey and life experiences have inspired her comedy and sense of humor both on and off the stage. She has been very candid about her experiences growing up in foster care in South Central Los Angeles. Her excessive talking and imaginary friends prompted her flustered social worker to steer her into stand-up comedy. She enrolled in the Laugh Factory’s Comedy Camp, a place for at-risk and underprivileged children to transform negative energy into something positive. The experience was just the beginning of her comedy career. Haddish recently founded The She Ready Foundation to help and support foster kids in need. In 2021 The She Ready Foundation launched an Internship Program with Ready To Succeed for foster youth in the SoCal area.

She currently lives in Los Angeles.

Tiffany Haddish will be the first to tell you she’s not perfect.

On Sunday, April 21, during an appearance at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books held at the University of Southern California, the “After Party” star opened up about her imperfect journey as she promoted her upcoming book, “ I Curse You With Joy .”

“I feel like I’ve always made mistakes,” the bestselling author said during a panel discussion with the L.A. Times’ Angel Jennings, per People .

Haddish continued, “I haven’t had one year that was the perfect year. I’ve had years that have some really amazing moments in them, but I have stumbled and fallen ever since. I’ve learned how to walk. I’ve tripped up. I’m not perfect.”

In “I Curse You With Joy,” she opens up about the toll the limelight has sometimes taken on her life and the lessons she’s learned along the way through a series of humorous essays.

Haddish told Jennings that her new book doesn’t shy away from the mistakes she’s made because they “give you the knowledge of how not to do it again, but also how to see it coming again and how to move out of the way; how to make adjustments.”

After multiple DUIs, including one in January 2022 in Georgia and another on Nov. 24, 2023, in Beverly Hills, Calif., when the actress allegedly fell asleep at the wheel , Haddish vowed to get help. Earlier this month, as previously reported by theGrio , the “Haunted Mansion” actress reflected on her sobriety journey thus far.

Among the insights she’s gained, Haddish said she realized she had “been too damn nice” over the years. According to her, drinking caused her to have a filter and keep a lot of her honest thoughts and reactions to herself. Since entering sobriety, she said, “there’s no filter.”

More of this unfiltered honesty can reportedly be expected in “I Curse You With Joy.”

Speaking to Jennings on Sunday, Haddish said her own has helped her identify the toxic patterns of others. She said, “You can see it happening to your friends, and you can say, ‘Hey, look, I know where you are right now. I’ve been through that. I can just give you this advice. You could take it, or you could leave it. But I’ve learned from my experience that this is what’s going to end up happening to you, and you can make the changes if you want or not.'”

During the event, Haddish also read from her children’s book, “ Layla, the Last Black Unicorn ,” and signed copies of her previous works, including her bestselling 2017 memoir “ The Last Black Unicorn .”

“I Curse You With Joy” is slated for release on May 7, 2024.

Tiffany Haddish got emotional while defended her decision to travel to Israel in order to learn more about the 7 October attacks and their aftermath.

On Tuesday (21 February), the comedian and actor, 44, announced on her Instagram Live page that she was on her way to visit the Middle East. “I’m gonna meet my future man out there,” Haddish said, in a video that was later reposted by Israel’s official Twitter account. “I’m going to the Holy Land.”

Speaking to TMZ , the Girls Trip star said that the reason for her trip was to understand more about what is happening on the ground in the country.

“I can’t believe everything that I read,” she said. “I need to go see for myself. I want to talk to the actual people that’s here, the people that actually experienced the situation that happened on the 7th.

“The people that actually have family members that are hostages that were taken out of their own homes, that were on their way to work driving from Palestine to Israel, working here on a daily basis, and how they were taken as well. I wanted to talk to the people. I wanted to be with the people. I wanted to see with my own eyes, hear with my own ears.”

Asked what she had heard since arriving in the region, Haddish responded: “I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned that people were taken out of their homes. I’ve learned that people were taken away from the actual event that was happening.

“There were a lot of people killed, but a lot of people were kidnapped from that event. I didn’t know that before. I’ve learned that there were 100 people that have been freed from being hostages in Gaza , but there are still 100 plus people that are over there.”

Haddish was then asked whether she would also be looking at Israel’s retaliation in Gaza, which health officials say has resulted in over 25,000 deaths.

“Yes, I’m going over there too,” she replied, growing audibly emotional. “I’m a firm believer in: ‘Go see with your own eyes before you pass judgement.’ Go over there cautiously, be cautious, but go see for yourself. I care about both sides. I care about humanity. Human beings.

“I know there’s a lot of religious stuff going on, a lot of control of the land, ‘No Jews here, no this there’ whatever... that’s neither here nor there with me. It’s about human life, human beings. Human beings, man! That’s what I care about. That’s why I’m here.”

In response to social media critics who argued Haddish was wrong to joke about finding a man in Israel given the seriousness of the situation, the comedian replied: “I’m here all by myself. Just like I was saying in 2018 when they were asking me about Mo’Nique and her husband, I said I don’t do my business like she does her business. Because I don’t have a husband. I’m all alone! That’s what I’m trying to tell you guys. I’m doing this all by myself.

“I don’t have a whole family full of men, or a man supporting me. I’m doing it on my own. I’m learning on my own. For people to say... I have to make light of something that the average female wouldn’t do, The average female wouldn’t have the courage to go see for themselves. There’s a lot of scary ass b****es out here, and y’all can be scared, but I’m going to go ahead and follow my instincts, and learn as much as I can learn. Educate myself before I go speaking on subject matters.”

Last November, Haddish addressed her arrest for a suspected DUI offence and said that it would “never happen again”.

The star was taken into custody after she was found asleep at the wheel of her car for the second time in two years.

Tiffany Haddish to Tell All in New 2024 Book: 'The Wig Is Off' (Exclusive)

"I find the joy in the hardest things in life," the comedian and actress tells PEOPLE about her new book, 'I Curse You with Joy'

Dalvin Adams; Diversion Books

Tiffany Haddish is returning to the page. The comedian, actress and producer, 44, announced exclusively with PEOPLE that she will be droppin her second book next year. I Curse You With Joy , a collection of essays and stories, will be published in May 2024 from Diversion Books.  “I’m so excited to share the rollercoaster of success that I’ve been on with my readers, and to show them that just because I’m famous, that doesn’t mean I’m not human,” Haddish tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. “I find the joy in the hardest things in life which you’ll all be able to read about in this new book.”

Diversion Books

I Curse You With Joy will explore the ups and downs of Haddish’s life on and off the screen, and what she has learned along the way. Haddish will write about the lasting legacy of her childhood trauma, as well the “bittersweet” reunion she had with her estranged father after nearly 20 years apart.

She will also explore the challenges of being a Black woman in the entertainment industry, where she has made history for being the first Black female comedian to host Saturday Night Live , and garnered roles in numerous successful films like Girls Trip and Haunted Mansion . Haddish also received the Comedy Album Grammy Award for her stand-up special Black Mitzvah , and became the second Black woman to do so, after Whoopi Goldberg .

“Readers love Tiffany for her authentic, heartfelt humor. The Tiffany you meet within the pages of I CURSE YOU WITH JOY is the same Tiffany that Beyonce and Jay-Z meet at the Grammy’s after party. She’s your best friend who made it big, and she is still keeping it real,” says editor Elizabeth Gassman in a press release.

Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty

Haddish is already a New York Times bestselling author. She published her debut memoir, The Last Black Unicorn , in 2017, where she wrote about her experience in foster care as a child and finding her voice in comedy. Haddish also published a children’s book, Layla the Last Black Unicorn , in 2022, about a young Black unicorn who attends school for the first time. "I think everyone grapples with, 'Who am I? Why am I here? What's my purpose? How do I fit in here?'” Haddish told PEOPLE in 2022 . "And just being able to take a moment and say, I'm okay the way I am. Even if somebody else doesn't agree. As long as I feel good about how I am, then there's nothing that I need to change."

On Nov. 24, Haddish was arrested on a DUI charge after she fell asleep behind the wheel of her car. She told Entertainment Tonight , "I'm going to get some help so I can learn balance and boundaries," and explained to the outlet that her car, a Tesla, was self-parked when she fell asleep. It blocked parts of the street when she was arrested. Haddish also complimented how the Beverly Hills Police Department (BHPD) handled the incident.

I Curse You With Joy is "a journey of self-discovery and celebration," according to a press release, and incorporates lessons Haddish has learned throughout. “This book is me, highs and lows,” she says in the press release. “The good, the bad, the ugly and of course the funny. The wig is off. I’m not wearing any makeup. No lashes. I’m going to spill the tea of my life, all the stuff that makes me more alive, more human and way more interesting than that beautiful wax mannequin of me in Madame Tussauds.” I Curse You With Joy will be released on May 7, 2024 by Diversion Books. An audio edition of the book will be released by Dreamscape Media, and will be read by the author.

Tiffany Haddish emotionally defends decision to go to Israel after losing thousands of followers

Tiffany Haddish on Instagram Live

Tiffany Haddish got emotional while responding to the backlash surrounding her decision to go to Israel to see the ongoing conflict ‘with her own eyes.’

The Girls Trip actress and comedian, 44, took to Instagram Live on Tuesday to inform her nearly 7.5 million followers that she was currently in the business class section of an LA flight bound for Israel, stating that she was headed to the Holy Land to reach her own conclusions about the violence happening there . The video, which was posted as reel but is no longer on Haddish’s page, has since been reposted by Israel’s official Twitter account.

Haddish has lost over 14,000 followers on Instagram since announcing her trip and is facing major criticism online .

Speaking to  TMZ , the comedian stood by her decision to visit the region and shared that she was motivated to learn more about the October 7 attacks specifically.

‘I can’t believe everything that I read,’ she said. ‘I need to go see for myself. I want to talk to the actual people that’s here, the people that actually experienced the situation that happened on the 7th.’

She makes it clear she wasn’t aware of the scale of the October 7 attacks before arriving in the Middle East, despite the global news coverage of the event.

‘There were a lot of people killed, but a lot of people were kidnapped from that event. I didn’t know that before. I’ve learned that there were 100 people that have been freed from being hostages in  Gaza , but there are still 100 plus people that are over there,’ she said.

Fans were concerned that Haddish wasn’t planning on seeing the devastation in Gaza and was instead doing a ‘propaganda tour’ of Israel. Some even suggested in the comments of Haddish’s original video that Israel was paying the star to visit and spread a state-sponsored narrative.

@amani commented, ‘how much was the check 💵?’ a sentiment echoed by @jst_hu4ns who wrote, ‘ Ur prob going to learn whatever their money wants to teach you.’

@soulsucka added, ‘Bobby Lee just mentioned something like this. Saying Israel flies out celebs and makes em post on social media 😂’

Haddish addressed this when she was asked by TMZ whether she would also be looking at Israel’s retaliation in Gaza.

‘Yes, I’m going over there too,’ she replied, her voice breaking with emotion. ‘I’m a firm believer in: “Go see with your own eyes before you pass judgement.” Go over there cautiously, be cautious, but go see for yourself. I care about both sides. I care about humanity. Human beings.

‘I know there’s a lot of religious stuff going on, a lot of control of the land, ‘No Jews here, no this there’ whatever… that’s neither here nor there with me. It’s about human life, human beings. Human beings, man! That’s what I care about. That’s why I’m here.’

Fans also took issue with Haddish saying ‘I’m gonna go meet my future man out there’ on the live stream.

When asked about this comment and the resulting backlash, the actress replied: ‘I’m here all by myself. Just like I was saying in 2018 when they were asking me about Mo’Nique and her husband, I said I don’t do my business like she does her business. Because I don’t have a husband. I’m all alone! That’s what I’m trying to tell you guys. I’m doing this all by myself.

‘I don’t have a whole family full of men, or a man supporting me. I’m doing it on my own. I’m learning on my own. For people to say… I have to make light of something that the average female wouldn’t do, The average female wouldn’t have the courage to go see for themselves.’

She then went on to say that she found at least some of the people in Israel frightening, saying: ‘There’s a lot of scary ass b****es out here, and y’all can be scared, but I’m going to go ahead and follow my instincts, and learn as much as I can learn. Educate myself before I go speaking on subject matters.’

What it looks like watching Tiffany Haddish do things to make more and more people dislike her throughout the years pic.twitter.com/i0P4h2aoih — I have so many questions? (@english_shamar) February 21, 2024

Haddish also took to her Instagram story to post a meme making light of the controversy surrounding her trip. The meme could be read as a criticism of supermodel Bella Hadid, who has been outspoken about her pro-Palestine views .

Haddish wrote, ‘I don’t know why but I laughed hard when I saw this!’ over a meme that reads: ‘Americans when…’ and shows a cartoon character with his eyes closed beside text that reads: ‘Bella Hadid travels to a theocratic authoritarian regime.’ Below that is the text, ‘Tiffany Haddish travels to the only democracy in the Middle East’ beside an image of the character angrily opening his eyes.

The original live stream, which was posted as a reel on the actresses’ page but is no longer posted, featured Haddish smiling and in high spirits, seeming for all the world to be headed to an all-inclusive island resort or ski holiday, not to one of the most deadly conflict zones in the world.

The live stream, which lasted more than 13 minutes, shows the actress swirling a glass of orange juice (she clarifies several times that it’s not a mimosa, saying, ‘champagne gives me gas, I would never do that to these people’) and responding to users comments in real-time.

Early in the video, Haddish broke into an improvised song, singing: ‘On my way to Tel Aviv, then to Jerusalem. Then I’m going to the Dead Sea and goin’ get me some. Gonna have some fun, yeah. It’s gonna be great. Then I’m gonna learn about the politics, ay.’

What Tiffany Haddish thinks she’s gonna do when she gets to Israel pic.twitter.com/8nBmunWbeg — Frank Ugochukwu (@MrFrankUgo) February 22, 2024

The actress, who made Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world in 2018, is known for her irreverent flair which was on full display throughout her stream-of-consciousness rant on the live stream.

At one point she declared that she was going to see ‘her people,’ possibly referring to the Jewish ancestry that she discovered when she met her Eritrean Jewish father for the first time when she was 27.

After later doing a DNA test to confirm her Jewish roots, Haddish started taking Hebrew lessons and studying the Torah, and she then decided to throw herself a Bat Mitzvah (a Jewish coming-of-age ritual usually conducted on a girl’s 12th or 13th birthday) for her 40th birthday party.

‘I might come back with a little Jewish baby,’ the comedian joked before getting deeper into her reasons for the trip, telling fans that she wants to see what’s happening in Israel herself before drawing any conclusions.

Tiffany Haddish in her Instagram live 'on her way to Israel'

‘I know a lot of stuff on social media be not true because … I see stuff people say about me, and I live my life – I’m living my life and I’m like, “That’s not what I said, that’s not true.”’

‘I’m gonna go see and then I’m gonna tell y’all what I think, I’m gonna go see with my own eyes,’ Haddish said, pausing to occasionally interact with the flight attendant or read comments.

She repeatedly reiterated throughout the video that she is not drinking champagne – the actress has twice been arrested for a DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol). She then showed viewers her snacks and the mouth tape she planned to put on to sleep during the 16-hour flight.

Haddish’s video came amid news of the US vetoing a UN resolution demanding immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and Israeli threats to invade the southern city of Rafah in Gaza, where many Palestinians have gone to seek refuge from Israeli violence.

The Palestinian death toll is nearing 30,000 according to the Health Ministry’s most recent report.

Given the severity of the situation in Gaza, many commenters found Haddish’s livestream to be tone-deaf and her decision to go to Israel troubling.

User @ravynwngz wrote: ‘Really Tiff?! wow, honestly there so much I could say but damn this is heartbreaking, you are not a safe space and your instincts are inherently flawed and dangerous.’

Other users were more supportive, wishing Haddish a safe flight and praising her bravery.

@purevegancakes commented ‘Have a safe journey! Can’t wait to see more of what you learn!’ and many other fans commented with heart emojis and other variations of well wishes.
