Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF1 Irons Review

More in reviews:.

Skechers GO GOLF Blade GF

50 Words or Less

The Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF1 irons launch the ball easily.  Long.  Almost impossible to hit them fat.

tour b 213hf

Introduction

When golfers talk about forgiveness, they typically mean how well a club preserves ball speed on hits that are off center.  Go to any range, however, and you can hear that the problem often isn’t mishits, it’s hitting the ground before the ball.  With this in mind, Bridgestone put an uber-forgiving sole on their JGR HF1 irons to help higher handicap players hit more greens in regulation.

tour b 213hf

At address, the Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF1 irons create a new category: the refined super game improvement iron .  With a chunk of the sole sticking out behind the top line, there’s no arguing that these aren’t SGI irons.  That said, the top line isn’t that thick and there’s not a ton of offset.  The blade length is about average, and the contrast between the two finishes on the face makes it appear smaller.

Sound & Feel

Just like the look, the sound and feel of the HF1 irons blends polish with power.  There’s a “snap” to impact that makes it feel like the ball flies off the face , but it’s not very loud.  Because it’s quiet, impact feels much softer than you might expect from an SGI iron.

tour b 213hf

Performance

When you look at the JGR HF1 iron’s wide sole, you expect a high-launching iron.  When you read the technical notes, your expectations go from “high launch” to “moon balls.”  What counters these design elements are very aggressive lofts.  The final result is a strong, medium-high ball flight with a boatload of ball speed.   Even when I tried to add loft and hit big cuts, I could not get the HF1 to balloon.

While Bridgestone’s focus is on the forgiveness and high launch, which are noteworthy, what really got me was the way the sole cures fat shots .  The range where I usually go is very sandy.  Any shot that’s even a little fat goes nowhere…unless you’re swinging the HF1 irons.  With these clubs, the sole skates through the turf and puts a charge into the ball.  If you struggle with hitting behind the ball, the HF1 is the best quick fix I’ve seen.

It’s not too often that a new club can surprise me, but the Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF1 did just that.  I was expecting high launch and a lot of forgiveness, and it delivered.  I was expecting massive distance, and it delivered.  What I was not expecting was the way it turned fat shots into good results.  For the high handicapper, the HF1 gets a strong recommendation from me.

Sounds sweet for the higher capper, but those clubs lengths! 39.25 in for a 5i? I hope a high capper can handle it. Interesting sole.

' src=

Hurry up and review the HF2. I’m searching for something to replace my PTx irons and are interested in hearing about the Bridgestone’s. Trying to find a game improvement iron that has a look closer the a players distance set. Am I dreaming?

919 Forged? For low to mid cappers.

' src=

We’ll have a full review of the JPX919 Forged next week.

' src=

Much as I love Bridgestone clubs, I really wish they hadn’t gone the “jacked lofts”/“5-iron is really a 4-iron” route. A 22° loft on a 39.25” shaft is a 4-iron no matter what you stamp on the toe and simply won’t be played by most high handicappers.

' src=

Matt nice review, but is there much distance between the 6 and the 5 with the gaping? Thanks,Robin.

Yes, about 10 yards.

' src=

Didn’t Adams or Cleveland or so have clubs with soles like this a few years back? Much difference? Anyway, Bridgestone seems to be popping up more again. Silly to call them “Tour” when they won’t get close to any players on the tour..

' src=

Well now, these comments sounds really good but playing them will tell the truth. HF2 sounds cool but standing in the fairways 185 to the greens, 4 irons are you with me?

' src=

Being a short golfer I have trouble getting the ball high enough to get the distance I need. I have a 11.0 handicap index. I have a very good short game, that’s because of not hitting a higher ball flight and missing greens. The JGR HF1 will help me improve my ability to hit better shots.

' src=

Well, I am new to the world of golf (I am 70 and just started playing 9 months ago) and have discovered I hit a lot of “fat” shots. If Matt is right, I may have to try the Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF1 irons. They sound like what a high handicapper like me needs.

' src=

Sounds like what my game needs. Lost some speed and strength with age, these would help me compensate for that.

' src=

I want to win the HF1 irons, from the review I read, this will fit me perfectly!!

' src=

Would love to have HF1 for improvement Thank You.

' src=

Jgr hf1 will maybe provide the consistency im looking forward too

Chesapeake Va

' src=

I would give anything for a set of clubs like these. I’m a vet and have back problems from surgerys and I hit a lot behind the ball. Maybe these could help Matt

' src=

These clubs look amazing

' src=

As a high handicapper I look forward to trying the HF1 irons.

' src=

Like the looks of the HF1. The specs bother me. The lofts seem to be very strong and some very close together and others far apart. Is this spacing required to keep the same distance gaping? Length seems long for metal shafts. Would have liked to see what different shafts are available. Looking forward to having them in my hands to satisfy my curiosity.

The lofts do seem oddly spaced, but it seems to work within the context of the club – low CG, hot face, etc.

' src=

Both the Hf1 and 2 look awesome and Bridgestone have been thorough and thoughtful with the two models. Both models I believe can be used to improve one’s game and my personal preference is the HF2 as they just look awesome. A true winner from a company that I believe think of us and not just the commercial benefit to them. Their range of golf balls have a great synergy giving all golfers the opportunity to try the best without compromising their game.

In essence Bridgestone have given a wide range of golfers the opportunity to use a club that will not only suit their game but actually give one the confidence to improve on their handicap. I personally love the fact that Bridgestone as usual have given all golfers the resource to improve and enjoy their game.

' src=

Great review! I would love to when these irons. Eddie, Springfield Missouri.

' src=

The HF 1 look nice but with their wide soles I would like to know how they handled heavy rough. Any experience with hitting them in heavy rough?

' src=

As I have become older and endured some feet and leg injuries, I have had trouble with fat shots. It would be interesting to see if the “almost impossible to hit fat” designed iron would help me.

' src=

I’ve played with “fat” sole irons before and got the same results talked about in this review. Need to range test these asap!

' src=

Are the HF 2 irons suitable for a mid-high handicap golfer ???

I don’t like to tell anyone they can’t play a certain piece of equipment. That said, if you’re talking about a 20+ handicap, I think the HF1 is a better choice in most cases.

' src=

I hit my irons (Ping Eye 2) all over the face and on the sweet spot occasionally… it feels like hitting a marshmallow when i do hit the sweet spot…… Would the HG 1’s help me to find the sweet spot more??? Any suggestions?? I need help. Thanks for your reply in advance.

No iron is going to help you hit the sweet spot more but a more forgiving club will lessen the difference between a good strike and a poor one.

' src=

I am interested in the JGR HF1s. It looks like Tour Edge’s EXS irons are direct competitors in the SGI category. Any feedback on how the two compare?

We haven’t tested the EXS iron, so we can’t offer a comparison.

These are expectional clubs in many ways. To bad the loft and shaft lengths make these play about two clubs long than the number. I would have to add at least 2 wedges just to compensate. Does not make much sense but that is the way they sell irons now.

Bridgestone 213 HF Irons

tour b 213hf

Introducing Bridgestone 213HF Iron. comes with SP-COR (suspension core) Technology, which was developed by "scientific contact", has been evolved and installed in this iron. The high initial velocity area has been further expanded. The polymer mounted inside absorbs the extra impact, giving a comfortable feel.

High-strength Ultimate Strong Metal 2.0 is used for the face material. An L-shaped face that improves the resilience performance of the hitting area at the bottom of the face with a dimple face that uses a thick face. And power slit is also installed. With these technologies, the ball is easy to lift and the flight distance to aim at the green It is a model that also has performance.

New SP-COR (suspension core) with new structure further expands the high initial velocity area. With a high initial velocity and high launch trajectory. Pursuing distance performance that can be aimed with carry. Also, compared to JGR HF3, the shallow shape of the semirage, which has a longer face length but a lower face height, gives a sense of security. Pursuing ease of flight.

If you are a mid-handicap golfer, a weekend warrior, or a higher handicap golfer looking to transition lower, the  Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 would be an ideal set.  They offer great forged feel and stunning looks that are often reserved for better golfers, yet launch it high and long with lots of forgiveness for a wide cross section of golfers.  Just because you don’t shoot par, doesn’t mean you want game improvement irons, these however are the perfect blend for the mid handicap golfer.

Best Bridgestone irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

tour b 213hf

In our forums, our members have been discussing all things Bridgestone irons. WRXer ‘Texas_Golfer’ is on the hunt for an older Bridgestone set as a backup to his primary set and has reached out for suggestions, with fellow members sharing their picks.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Christen_The_Slop: “I have a set of TS-201. Very underrated CB.”
  • JDubya89: “J40 CB, and it’s not even close, in my opinion.”
  • Mudguard: “I think had J33 Combos, J38s, then J40s. I haven’t used them in at least eight years. But they were the only set I’ve kept.”
  • IL2AZ: “I have both the Tour B X CB and the J15 CB. I am in the minority in that I prefer the Tour B X CB. Little more compact than the J15 CB and feel more solid/dense out of the middle. The J15 CB feels almost too soft at times IMHO.”

Project X Denali Blue, Black shaft Review – Club Junkie Review

tour b 213hf

Originally, Project X was known for low-spin steel iron shafts. However, the company might now be known for wood shafts. Denali is the newest line of graphite shafts from Project X. With the Denali line, the company focuses on feel as well as performance.

There are two profiles in the Denali line, Blue and Black, to fit different launch windows. Denali Blue is the mid-launch and mid-spin profile for players who are looking for a little added launch and Denali Black is designed for low-launch and low-spin. Both models are going to offer you a smooth feel and accuracy.

For a full in-depth review check out the Club Junkie podcast on all podcast streaming platforms and on YouTube.

Project X Denali Blue

I typically fit better into mid-launch shafts, as I don’t hit a very high ball so the Denali Blue was the model I was more excited to try. Out of the box, the shaft looks great and from a distance, it is almost hard to tell the dark blue from the Denali Black. With a logo down install of the shaft, you don’t have anything to distract your eyes, just a clean look with the transition from the white and silver handle section to the dark navy mid and tip.

Out on the course, the Blue offers a very smooth feel that gives you a good kick at impact. The shaft loads easily and you can feel the slightly softer handle section compared to the HZRDUS lineup. This gives the shaft a really good feel of it loading on the transition to the downswing, and as your hands get to impact, the Denali Blue keeps going for a nice, strong kick.

Denali Blue is easy to square up at impact and even turn over to hit it straight or just little draws and most of the flex of the shaft feels like it happens right around where the paint changes from silver to blue. The Blue launches easily and produces what I consider a true mid-flight with the driver. While it is listed as mid-spin, I never noticed any type of rise in my drives. Drives that I didn’t hit perfectly were met with good stability and a ball that stayed online well.

tour b 213hf

Project X Denali Black

When you hold the Denali Black in your hands you can tell it is a more stout shaft compared to its Blue sibling by just trying to bend it. While the handle feels close to the Blue in terms of stiffness, you can tell the tip is much stiffer when you swing it.

Denali Black definitely takes a little more power to load it but the shaft is still smooth and doesn’t give you any harsh vibrations. Where the Blue kicks hard at impact, the Black holds on a little and feels like keeps you in control even on swings that you try and put a little extra effort into. The stiff tip section also makes it a little harder to square up at impact and for some players could take away a little of the draw from their shot.

Launch is lower and more penetrating compared to the Blue and produces a boring, flat trajectory. Shots into the wind don’t rise or spin up, proving that the spin stays down. Like its mid-launch sibling, the Black is very stable and mishits and keeps the ball on a straighter line. Shots low off the face don’t get very high up in the air, but the low spin properties get the ball out there farther than you would expect. For being such a stout shaft, the feel is very good, and the Denali Black does keep harsh vibrations from your hands.

tour b 213hf

Overall the Project X Denali Blue and Black are great additions to the line of popular wood shafts. If you are looking for good feel and solid performance the Denali line is worth trying out with your swing. Choose Blue for mid-launch and mid-spin or Black for lower launch and low spin.

What we know about Bryson DeChambeau’s 3D-printed Avoda irons

tour b 213hf

Bryson DeChambeau fired an opening-round 7-under 65 at Augusta National, hitting an impressive 15 of 18 greens in regulation in the process. Golf’s mad scientist’s play grabbed headlines and so too did his equipment. In place of the Ping i230 irons he had in the bag last week for LIV Golf’s Miami event, DeChambeau is gaming a prototype 5-PW set of irons from little-known direct-to-consumer manufacturer Avoda.

What is Avoda Golf?

Founded by Tom Bailey, also a Mike Schy student like Bryson DeChambeau, Avoda Golf is a direct-to-consumer golf equipment company that currently manufactures both single and variable-length irons in one model that are available for pre-order.

What irons is Bryson DeChambeau playing?

Per multiple reports, DeChambeau is playing a custom-designed set of single-length irons that incorporate bulge and roll into the face design. The two-piece 3D-printed irons were reportedly only approved for play by the USGA this week, according to Golfweek’s Adam Schupak.

Regarding the irons, DeChambeau told Golf Channel the irons’ performance on mishits was the determining factor in putting them in play this week. “When I mishit on the toe or the heel,” DeChambeau said. “It seems to fly a lot straighter for me and that’s what has allowed me to be more comfortable over the ball.”

What can we tell about the design of the clubs?

These days, it is a little hard to speculate on what is under the hood with so many hollow body irons. DeChambeau’s irons look to be hollow on the lower section as they do flare back a decent amount. That “muscle” on the back also looks to be fairly low on the iron head, but we can assume that is progressive through the set, moving up higher in the short irons.

A screw out on the toe is probably used to seal up the hollow cavity and used as a weight to dial in the swing weight of the club. From pictures, it is hard to tell but the sole looks to have a little curve from heel to toe while also having some sharper angles on them. A more boxy and sharper toe section looks to be the design that suits Bryson’s eye based on the irons he has gravitated toward recently.

What are bulge and roll, again?

Two types of curvature in a club face, traditionally incorporated only in wood design. Bulge is heel-toe curvature. Roll is crown-sole curvature. Both design elements are designed to mitigate gear effect on off-center strikes and produce shots that finish closer to the intended target line. (GolfTec has an excellent overview of bulge and roll with some handy GIFs for the visual learner)

What else is in DeChambeau’s bag?

Accompanying his traditional Sik putter, Bryson builds his set with a Ping Glide 4.0 wedges, a Krank Formula Fire driver and 5-wood, and a TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver, all with LA Golf graphite shafts.

Taste of the Masters: Bringing Augusta National's food experience to patrons at home

Change Text Size

From start to finish, the Masters Tournament has an identity all its own. Whether it’s the drive up Magnolia Lane or the green jacket donned by the victor, the Masters is known for a multitude of things: azaleas in full bloom in early spring, Rae’s Creek, Butler Cabin and the quintessential selection of food and drinks enjoyed exclusively by patrons in attendance. Or rather, that used to be the case.

Insert "Taste of the Masters," a food and beverage initiative spearheaded by Augusta National in 2020 when the tournament took place at a non-traditional time, in November, with no patrons on-site due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic challenged the sports and entertainment industry to adjust and adapt, and the Masters was no different. It began with a simple question from the team at Augusta National: What are some ways to help bring the experience to fans and make this a memorable tournament?

Aside from opening an online patron shop that allowed ticketed patrons to purchase Masters merchandise from home (the Masters only sells official Masters merchandise on the grounds at Augusta National), the team also came up with the idea of selling Masters food and drink kits to those ticketed patrons, which they dubbed "Taste of the Masters."

The full spread of what's included in Taste of the Masters. (Courtesy of the Masters Tournament)

The full spread of what's included in Taste of the Masters. (Courtesy of the Masters Tournament)

The club and hospitality team spearheaded this initiative by identifying the items that represented the Masters best. Without hesitation, the answer was obvious: pimento cheese.

There may be no other concession item in sports that holds the weight or reputation of Augusta National’s pimento cheese sandwiches. With the perfect amount of spice paired with cheesy creaminess and jammed between two pieces of fresh white bread, the pimento cheese sandwich has been a staple on the menu board at Augusta since the 1950s.

Beyond pimento cheese, the team knew they needed to fill the kits with other options to satisfy the appetites of all who planned to enjoy the meals from home. Pork bar-b-que and egg salad were added as entree options, as were sides including Augusta’s signature chocolate chip cookies and potato chips.

When tasked with the challenge of replicating the on-site experience, however, a final few pieces were vital. While the food offerings satisfied the taste aspect, to really give it that Masters feel they added authentic plastic Masters cups and sheets of the iconic Masters checkerboard serving paper.

The "Taste of the Masters" was such a hit that the team brought it back for the 2021 Masters, which featured partial patron attendance. The kits were now available to everyone, not just ticketed patrons, and sold out even faster.

And that was a wrap on the kits, or so the team thought.

The kits were discontinued in 2022, as patrons on-site could once again enjoy the full offerings while strolling the grounds. But overwhelming fan feedback suggested that the kits were missed.

The team was not expecting "Taste of the Masters" to become a fan staple, but as folks expressed how important it was to have the kits, using them to create or enhance their traditions around watching the tournament together, it became clear it had. Augusta National recognized the opportunity for people to recreate the patron experience at home, and so, "Taste of the Masters" returned in 2023.

For 2024, the Augusta National team continued to look at ways to evolve and perfect the project. One enhancement for this year: Fans have had a say in what's included thanks to their feedback. Bar-b-que potato chips, Georgia pecan caramel popcorn and Masters coasters are included in the kit, with the popcorn’s inclusion a direct result of fan feedback. The team even added a smaller tasting kit as an option this year, also a direct result of fan feedback, which also includes fun accessories like food item placards and miniature Masters flag toothpicks to hold sandwiches together.

For Augusta National, the kits are yet another opportunity to go above and beyond for fans across the country while also paying homage to the tournament's roots in Augusta, Georgia. The food and beverage experience is part of Masters history, which started with the vision of Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, who believed that food was key to the Masters’ evolution as an elite sporting experience for patrons. The two tournament pioneers wanted the menu to reflect a southern-style picnic, with sandwiches as an easy option that locals could create in their homes and bring to the course for the patrons.

The menu has come a long way since the Masters inception in 1934, with the Taste of the Masters as simply the next step in its evolution. What originally started as an almost regional, exclusive offering for ticketed fans in 2020 has now grown to a nationwide fan favorite in households across the country. As for whether the Masters pimento cheese sandwich has made its way to all 50 states, it’s hard to say, but 2024 is the first year where shipping to Alaska and Hawaii is available. And why stop there? Fan interest north of the border suggests that "Taste of the Masters" could be headed to Canada as well.

While nothing is guaranteed, "Taste of the Masters" looks to be around for the long haul.

  2. Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 Irons Review

The Tour B JGR HF2 irons look sharp at address . Every aspect of the design fits together well - a medium top line, modest offset, and average blade length. For this particular review, I had a chance to take a long look at the Tour B JGR HF 2 irons in 4-AW (the 4 iron is offered separately from the 5-AW set makeup). Performance. When you look at the JGR HF1 iron's wide sole, you expect a high-launching iron. When you read the technical notes, your expectations go from "high launch" to "moon balls.". What counters these design elements are very aggressive lofts. The final result is a strong, medium-high ball flight with a boatload of ball speed.
