Kings of Leon (formed in 2000) is an American alternative family rock band hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, in the U.S.

After the divorce of their parents, brothers Nathan and Caleb Followill moved to Nashville, Tennessee where they met songwriter Angelo Petraglia who introduced the pair to the influences of Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones and The Clash. In 1999 youngest brother Jared inspired by the Pixies and The Velvet Underground and cousin Matthew also moved to Nashville and Kings of Leon was born.

In 2002 Nathan and Caleb caught the attention of RCA Records who said they would be sending an A&R rep to hear them play. The band kidnapped Matthew from his home and spent a month in the brothers’ basement where they carved out the tracks “Molly’s Chamber”, “California Waiting” and “Wicker Chair”. A year later with Jared still unable to play bass, Kings of Leon released the “Holy Roller Novocaine” EP to critical reviews, receiving a considerable amount of exposure.

Kings of Leon have gone on to be one of the most successful rock bands of the 2000s, fusing their climatic Southern rock and blues influences to increasingly accessible results. The band released their debut “Youth & Young Manhood” in 2003 and subsequently “Aha Shake Heartbreak” in 2004, “Because of the Times” in 2007, “Only by the Night” in 2008, “Come Around Sundown” in 2010 and “Mechanical Bull” in 2013.

The band’s initial success was in the UK with nine Top 40 singles, two BRIT Awards in 2008 and all their five albums peaking in the Top 5 of the UK Albums chart. Following the release of “Only by the Night” in 2008 the band won the hearts of American fans largely helped by the radio-friendly “Sex on Fire”, “Use Somebody” and “Notion”. At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards the group took home awards for Record of the Year for “Only by the Night”, Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Use Somebody”.

Due to the band international success and popularity of “Only by the Night” In 2008 Kings of Leon headlined Glastonbury festival followed by headlining slots at Reading & Leeds, Sasquatch, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits the year after.

Live reviews

!!best concert I ever attended!!

Everything (support band and kings of Leon themselves) started perfectly on time and it was a great show. The music was way better than any record could ever capture!! Hitting every note perfectly you could definitely see the band trying to do more than their best while looking so effortless and natural. Somehow every song they performed was "clearer" / more refined or nuanced (as you could hear the different instruments creating a song rather than a blurred, smeared sound as a whole) and kind of more intense than on the record: the slow, sometimes sad ones were more touching and really making me feel the emotion created by the music and the faster ones were much more rocking and engaging. The way they incorporated the audience and the atmosphere with everybody in the crowd singing the lyrics along at the top of their lungs, shouting, dancing and jumping around made it a very special event! As I was standing in the front row the whole event was made even more perfect by the fact that I was able to catch not only one but even two of the huge amount of plectrums (not sure wether this is the right plural of this word ^^) that the whole band was throwing in the crowd during their gig and a friend of mine even got a drum stick! All in all it was an evening full of highlights that made me discover a whole new side to their music but my personal favorite and definitely most emotional moment was a 10 minute version of pyro when the band somehow managed to reach every single person in the audience and make them participate (at least they made me feel like it).

Finally I want to point out that I personally never was I huge Kings of Leon fan - don't get me wrong, I always liked their music and knew the lyrics to their most common songs (like sex on fire, use somebody and waste a moment) but never got really excited for them like I did for other musicians or was actively listening to them, just once in while when I was feeling like it and then only the songs mentioned above. But this concert definitely changed my feelings towards them and reached something in me emotionally which I didn't even know existed! I really don't know how they managed to do that but I feel like I see things differently than before and it was probably one of the best moments in my entire life so far (and I really don't think that anything only close to that will happen to me in the any soon!). I would give everything to see them again soon but I think for me (living in Germany) it was kind of a rare opportunity :(

So to sum up I would really recommend to go see them if you have the chance to as it was a revelation to me! At first I thought that the tickets were too expensive but after this performance I would pay more than twice as much to get to experience a concert of them again.

When it first came to my attention that Kings of Leon had announced a summer series of one-off shows I knew it was vital that I managed to bag a ticket. The announcement soon came after the release of their sixth studio album 'Mechanical Bull' which soared straight to the top of the charts instantly after its release.

It was inevitable that the show would include tracks from this highly anticipated album, but with the bands huge success since they first burst onto the scene in 2003 it was inevitable that their huge number of singles would also be making an appearance. Leading up the performance we were treated with support acts 'Twin Atlantic' and 'HAIM' only giving us a small taster of what we should expect later in the evening. Racking up such a huge following over the years it was only expected that fans of the band would come out in force to see the band in person which is quite a rarity. The set list was carefully selected allowing us to share in their success over the years with a combination of their hits since the start of their career, only ensuring that all the crowds requests were met. It is true that this band do not interact with the audience as much as other artists do, but what they lack in conversation they definitely make up for in talent. Watching this band live felt monumental, they harbour such a talent and have carried with them their rock roots throughout their time in the industry.

Of course their most famous singles 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use Somebody' caused the biggest roar from the crowd all night but combined with their earlier rock ballads, this night was unforgettable. If you were to take anything away from this review, it would be say yes to buying a ticket to see this band as soon as you possibly can.

I had the opportunity to see the Kings of Leon at the Milwaukee Summerfest and other than them coming on late, only singing an hour and a half and not doing my two favorites, I was not disappointed. Since I'm fairly new to the Kings of Leon, I'm not familiar with a lot of their songs but I still enjoyed them tremendously. The songs that I knew sounded even better live than they do on their albums and their performance of most of the songs that I didn't know made me want to add those songs to my collection.

While they aren't the best vocalists, they are excellent musicians and they showcased their skills throughout the show. Additionally, from the time the concert began to the time it ended, it was all about the music. Other than graciously thanking the audience a few times, there was very little dialogue and they truly let the music "speak" in its stead.

After such awesome showmanship, naturally I was extremely disappointed when they concluded their concert after only an hour and a half, especially after not hearing my favorites. As a matter of fact, I was so disappointed that I had initially decided seeing them wasn't worth the two and a half hour drive I took to get there plus the cost of the ticket and that I wouldn't see them again. In hindsight however, I'm glad I went because their performance in and of itself was awesome. The jury is still out as to whether I'll see them again but at this point, I won't rule it out.

Kings of Leon is one of my favorite bands to see live: these guys just tend to have a great time, party, and drink along with the rest of us in the crowd! They have been around for quite a few years and really started taking off in the mid-2000s, but they still know their roots. They are all brothers and cousins so they have a connection all of their own, and Caleb's vocals are like a gateway to let us join in on the family too. They tend to play more arenas and amphitheaters these days since they are so huge, but their sound is perfect for it; these guys rock hard and always leave me walking away satisfied with my ears ringing and a smile on my face. They are another band that don't really rely on visuals and props to supplement their act, they let their instruments and vocals do all of the work, which is all anyone needs.

When you see Kings of Leon live, they don't sound totally like they do on their albums, they sound even better. Everyone can sing along to "Sex on Fire" and "Mary", but their live versions of the songs can be unpredictable and much better to listen to. They mainly play what the crowd wants to hear, basically most of the favorites from the past three albums, but once in a while they will throw in a tune from earlier in their careers. They are always worth seeing when they come around town!

Overall excellent concert. The opening band, The Sherlocks, put up a good performance that tied in quite well with what was yet to come. The KOL concert started with a not-so-impressive stage, but as part of the act, as we had to wait 40 minutes for the full stage, lights, animations, etc to be unleashed. The sound was excellent for a pavilion gig, we were on the stands facing frontally to the stage and sound was clear and enjoyable. They played all songs quite similarly to the albums without any major modifications with a great array. The only couple of things that weren't that perfect were the fact that they could have played a few more songs from the Mechanical Bull album, in my opinion would have tied quite well within the concert, and the fact that they didn't address the audience nor engaged with "us" for the biggest part of the concert, playing all songs straight without any interruptions, no breaks, no big discourses or presentations, and finishing it in 1:45 hours. Taking into consideration their music and albums, we were expecting the show to reach at least 2 hours, but was still a great experience nonetheless.

They were great live! I saw them at the Xfinity center in Mansfield Massachusetts. The opening band was pretty good (Daniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats). They did about six or seven songs as the opener. Kings of Leon came out to a beating heart intro it was neat. They performed some old "classics" such as "Notion", "Use Somebody", and "Sex on Fire". They sounded just like they do on the radio! The lead singer was very professional when the drummer had a flub and they had to stop the song. He just said "Hey that happens sometimes, live music". I thought that was cool that he was so chill about it. He talked a bit then they restarted the song. I think the lead singer has one of those voices that is made better live. He sounded good. They had really awesome background screens that changed designs and patterns. The lighting was fun a bit flashy at times but not too much. They ended the night with "Sex on Fire" and then did an extra song after that. It was a great night and totally worth the hour and a half drive it took us to get there. :) I would go see them again if given the opportunity.

KOL is one of my favorite bands and this was my first time seeing them. Had pit standing tickets and man the show had good energy. I love that they played a lot of their new album as expected but they continued to play their oldies but goodies as well, ending with like 25 total songs played. The songs sounded even better live than the recordings, and their big sound for 4 people was well alive. Their bass guitarist and drumming is a sight to see instrumentally and Caleb's voice was on point. Loved that they played "immortals" which is one of my favorites but honestly knew every song and couldn't of asked for a better set list! Great band, great show, I will be seeing them again!

This band is my life and to of finally seen them made me cry like a baby but I didn't care, I'm so grateful to have seen them play and I'm already looking forward to when they come back, maybe another 3/4 year wait but it'll be perfect!

Kings was amazing!!!! Although my roommate and I purchased cheap GA tickets we were able to sneak closer to the front.

The show was phenomenal. One kol opened with Closer, the spirit of music came through the amphitheater like a tsunami wave. Cried like a little school girl when they played Tonight. "Tonight, I'm gonna lose my body" needless to say the sound of the music reached out and resonated with the underlying ache in my soul. I know the whole crowd was move when they have a shout to Matt followill for his birthday. HANDS DOWN BEST SHOW IVE BEEN TO. I will forever remember Kings of Leon mechanical bull tour 2014!!!

They were great! Definitely not a boring band, the music is fun and upbeat, the band members were nice to their fans and audience, and I give them lots of credit for their lighting and video displays which attracts attention. Everyone really loved the way they played and that they not only played from their new album, but oldies as well so everyone can sing along. Their stage was awesome with the video effects and lighting which kept you going. I so recommend going to see them, I won't hesitate for next time!

Tickets on-sale beginning friday, may 21 st  , one dollar of every ticket to go to newly formed foundation inherit the music investing in the future of music.

On the heels of a groundbreaking new album, KINGS OF LEON announces the When You See Yourself Tour produced by Live Nation. The Grammy Award-winning group will kick off the tour on August 3 rd in West Palm Beach, FL at the iThink Financial Amphitheater and travel through 20+ cities before concluding on October 3 rd in Ridgefield, WA at the Sunlight Supply Amphitheater. The tour will make stops at outdoor venues across North America, including two hometown shows at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater. Tickets for the tour will be available to the general public beginning Friday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. local time at www.livenation.com .

Known for their impressive live performances, which have consistently been praised by critics for their dynamic creative, Kings of Leon will take to the stage performing new material alongside fan favorite tracks in their highly anticipated return to live shows.  The band expressed their excitement to get back on the road when speaking with SPIN for their April cover. “It has that fun first day of summer camp vibe to it, which we’ve missed so much. It’s going to be super cool to get out there and play these songs for the first time.” said Nathan Followill. Check out the cover and read the full article HERE .

Special guests Cold War Kids will join them as support, with band frontman Nathan Willett adding, “We are so excited to open for Kings of Leon on tour all over the US! Like- thrilled beyond belief, losing our minds about it! Let’s go!”

Earlier this year, Kings of Leon released their innovative eighth studio album When You See Yourself , marking the first time ever that a new album was released as an NFT. In a first of it’s kind launch, the innovative album release made waves through the music industry, quickly becoming one of the most successful wide-scale use of NFTs within the music industry to date.   In the history making drop, the band made available six GOLDEN TICKET experiences, offering fans four front row seats, each tour, to the show of their choosing, anywhere in the world, FOR LIFE.  NFT YOURSELF album token holders were also able to redeem “Going Nowhere” (an acoustic version of the album track ‘Supermarket’). The previously unreleased version of the track is being given as a token of appreciation to everyone who was willing to invest in the future of music, during a year of uncertain futures. As Kings of Leon continue exploring ways to connect directly with their fans, NFT YOURSELF will be the gift that keeps on giving.

The drop has raked in 1k Ethereum, which at today’s valued exchange rate, is approximately 3.7 million dollars. $600,000 of that has gone to directly benefit Live Nation’s Crew Nation. Echoing this sentiment on tour, the band will continue to give back to their musical community with one dollar from every ticket going directly to their newly formed Inherit The Music foundation.

Inherit The Music is embarking on a campaign to inspire the next generation of musicians. Co-founded by Kings of Leon and philanthropist Alisha Ballard, Inherit The Music supports local organizations that pay forward the gifts that only music can provide. By providing resources and funding education programs at all age levels, this newly formed charitable organization aims to impact the aspiring musicians of today and the future.

Kings of Leon’s latest album, When You See Yourself , was recorded at Nashville’s famed Blackbird Studios and produced by Grammy Award-winning Markus Dravs. The album has received critical acclaim with  Rolling Stone Magazine  noting “…the band’s eighth album is an arena rock of the mind,” that “lunges and soars with rippling guitar leads cascading across some of the dirtiest riffs the band has put on a record since the New South-meets-neo-Strokes garage moves of its first two albums… this record might surprise you.”

Kings of Leon Announce New Album ‘Can We Please Have Fun’, New Song ‘Mustang’ + 2024 Tour Dates

Kings of Leon have returned with a new song called “Mustang,” their first single from the upcoming album Can We Please Have Fun , and will support the record on a 2024 tour.

“I kept telling myself, ‘I really believe we can make something special,’” frontman Caleb Followill explained of the recording process (via press release). “Every day it was positive vibes, like ‘Let’s keep it moving. Instead of getting frustrated, write another one. Keep going.’ It was a very special time for us.”

"Mustang" marks the band’s first new release since their 2021 album, When You See Yourself . Followill new the song was special when he saw the way it resonated with his children.

“Every time I would play it in the house, my four-year-old son would start really getting into it,” the singer epxlained. “Anytime I play something and my kids like it, I’m like, ‘Alright, here we go!’”

“Mustang” is propelled by a driving guitar part and emphatic backbeat, coupled with the band’s familiar southern rock style. The tune also features elements of psychedelic and garage rock within its layers, as Kings of Leon once again display the maturity of their sound. Above it all, frontman Followill’s distinctive vocals soar, such as on the chorus when he declares: “There’s a Mustang in the city, and it’s calling me out / Are you a Mustang or a king, what are you all about?”

Listen to “Mustang” below.

Kings of Leon Had Been Teasing New Music

Kings of Leon originally revealed that new material was on the way during their first concert of 2024.

“Let me tell you, we have some new music coming,” Followill declared during the band’s Jan. 25 gig in Mexico. “It’s coming real soon, so get ready for the Mustang. It’s coming for you.”

Earlier this week, the band shared teaser clips on social media, including a career spanning montage in which bassist Jared Followilll asked, “Can we please have fun?”

The subtle hints on social media go back even further than that. On New Years Eve, the band said goodbye to 2023 with a message that read: "We worked really hard this year. Next year, can we please have fun?"

Can We Please Have Fun will be released on May 10. In conjunction with the album' announcement, the band unveiled a sprawling 2024 tour across North America. Tour dates and the album track list can be found below.

Kings of Leon released When You See Yourself , their eighth studio album, in March. The record marked the rock outfit’s first in five years, following 2016’s Walls , and they made history by releasing When You See Yourself in the form of a non-fungible token , becoming the first band to do so. Can We Please Have Fun, as its title suggests, is a document of one of this era’s great rock & roll bands cutting loose, trying new things, and, yes, having some fun. Recorded at Dark Horse studio in Nashville and produced with new collaborator Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Florence + the Machine) the album sees a new side of Kings of Leon. On the new album, the band harkens back to their gritty origins while simultaneously finding new gears. It’s the sound of a band unified in vision and purpose, freed from any expectations, and the album the band says they’ve always wanted to make. It was the most enjoyable record I’ve ever been a part of,” Caleb says. “It’s like we allowed ourselves to be musically vulnerable,” Nathan adds. “I love it when a rock band is not embarrassed to admit that every song doesn’t have to be on 11.” The group is gearing up for a monumental year, and they’re ready to take the world by storm. “When you have a band, there’s a bond like no other, and when you have family, you have a bond like no other,” Caleb says. “We have both of those things. I thought, if we put all our energy toward something, who is gonna stop us? Who can stop us except us?”

Kings of Leon are coming to TD Pavilion at the Mann on September 23!

Kings of Leon is an American rock band formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1999. The band is composed of brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill, and their cousin Matthew Followill.

The band's early music was a blend of Southern rock and garage rock with blues influences, but it has evolved throughout the years to include a variety of genres and a more alternative rock-based sound. Kings of Leon achieved initial success in the United Kingdom with nine Top 40 singles and two BRIT Awards in 2008, and all three of the band's albums at the time peaked in the top five of the UK Albums Chart. Their third album, Because of the Times, reached No. 1.

After the release of Only by the Night in September 2008, the band achieved chart success in the United States. The singles "Sex on Fire", "Use Somebody", and "Notion" all peaked at number one on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album was their first platinum-selling album in the United States, and the best-selling album of 2008 in Australia, being certified platinum nine times. The band's fifth album, Come Around Sundown, was released on October 18, 2010. Their sixth album, Mechanical Bull, was released on September 24, 2013. The seventh studio album, Walls, was released on October 14, 2016. Their eighth studio album, When You See Yourself, was released on March 5, 2021. Girl Ultra, Eddie Zuko and more Latin artists tell us how they are prepping for Coachella

Perhaps no other major musical fest has led the way in booking Latin acts quite like the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

This year, 21 Latin acts are on the lineup , nearly twice as many as 2023. In addition to big stars like Peso Pluma, Young Miko , J Balvin, Ice Spice and Carin León , the festival will also feature a slew of up-and-coming Latin acts ready to impress attendees unfamiliar with them.

Coachella 2024: Everything you need to know about the festival

Your guide to Coachella 2024, from who’s playing, how to get tickets and what to eat at the festival to the party scene and how to watch at home on YouTube.

April 9, 2024

Ahead of Weekend 1, we spoke to Cimafunk, Hermanos Gutiérrez, the Red Pears, Girl Ultra and Eddie Zuko about how they’re getting ready for the festival.

Cimafunk arrives on the Red Carpet at the Crypto.com Arena.

As the first Cuban-born artist to ever play at Coachella, Erik Alejandro Iglesias Rodríguez, better known as Cimafunk, says he is ready for the Latin “invasion” of the festival. Recognized for his funk-influenced sound, he is preparing for his Coachella debut by “eating good,” rehearsing with his band and embracing his nerves.

“It’s a dream come true. It’s something all artists dream of at some point in their career,” said Rodríguez. “For me, it was shocking [to be included in the lineup]. But, there was something internally that I was like, ‘Yeah I’m ready, my tribe is ready.’”

As a performer who has played different festivals around the world, he is confident in his ability to capture the crowd’s attention. His latest single, “Playa Noche,” released earlier this week, captures the feel-good sound he plans to exude at the festival.

“I can only deliver myself and the groove, he said. “When [the band] gets together, we really enjoy what we do and when people see that they feel that energy.”

Hermanos Gutiérrez

The guitar duo Hermanos Gutiérrez say their music is perfect for the dry wind, sandy landscape and blazing sun of the desert.

“If you watch us play on stage, it’s just two brothers and two guitars. But the sound is so rich that if you see us, you might think there are more people on the stage,” said Estevan Gutiérrez. “We can color the landscape.”

On Thursday, the duo released “Until We Meet Again,” a single from their upcoming album “Sonido Cósmico,” out June 14.

“In all the excitement Coachella brings ... [we] bring that intimacy to the festival. There’s gonna be people partying, but we hope [they] find that intimacy in our music, especially being in the desert,” said Alejandro Gutiérrez.

Marking their Coachella debut, the Ecuadorian-Swiss brothers say they are grateful for the opportunity to take the stage, and that they are most excited to watch Khruangbin perform.

“We are so honored to be there. It’s a dream that’s coming true,” said Estevan.

Members of the band the Red Pears: Henry Vargas, left, Jose Corona and Patrick Juarez in El Monte.

The Red Pears

Five years after their debut performance at Coachella, the Red Pears — Las Peras Rojas — are returning to the desert equipped with more “musical maturity,” onstage experience and enough new music for two completely different weekends.

“Two different things are gonna happen both weekends,” said Jose Corona, who comprises the band alongside Henry Vargas and Patrick Juarez. “Two different sets, two different vibes — something that we think is cool.”

The El Monte trio will have a wide selection of songs to choose from, including tracks from their upcoming album “Better Late Than Never,” which will be released this Friday. Since 2019, the indie band has gradually played in front of bigger crowds and built up its stage presence — and it’s ready to show out.

“With the set time they’re giving us and the name being bigger on the lineup, it’s like you have something to prove,” Vargas said.

Growing up in Mexico, Mariana de Miguel would hear of Coachella as one of the biggest stages a musician could play on. This week, she’ll fulfill that dream for herself when she performs as Girl Ultra, whose music ranges from electronic dance beats to love ballads.

“Every stage is just a new opportunity to make things better,” De Miguel said. “And to look at new sets of eyes and mouth singing at the same time. It’s just a beautiful experience to me.”

Her showcase will feature the first in-person performance of her new track, “rimel,” as well as bass-centric sounds that will make for a “very dynamic set.”

For De Miguel, performing at Coachella reassures her that all her time spent experimenting with different genres and reaching new audiences is paying off. It also means that she’s currently part of a bigger movement in Latin music.

“People are craving música en Español,” she said. “It just feels like it’s been exponentially growing, not just for me, but for all my Latino and Mexican fellas. It’s the best time right now for music in Spanish.”

Eddie Zuko

To Chicano singer-songwriter Eddie Zuko, Coachella is a homecoming.

“It’s important to me and our local community that someone from a little town can perform at a festival of this stature,” said the Imperial Valley native. “It’s an international festival, but it will feel very much like a local hometown show to me.”

Zuko says he’s more excited than nervous, and that he and his band are spending their pre-festival days perfecting every element of their show.

“We are making sure we give the absolute best show we can give. We are being perfectionists,” said Zuko. “I’m excited for people to hear it because even if you don’t know who I am or have never heard my music before I think people will come away from the performance impressed or maybe curious.”

Olly Murs reveals ‘intense plan’ to make a mad dash to his baby’s birth while touring

Default author image

Olly Murs

Things really are on the Up for Olly Murs as the singer and his heavily pregnant wife, Amelia, prepare to welcome their first child into the world . Here, Murs, 39, tells us about impending fatherhood, the prospect of turning 40 and hitting the road with Take That.

Just to warn you, I am in a bit of pain. I went paintballing for my brother’s stag do and I’m covered in bruises.

It’s horrible, because the more you scream, the more people hit you.

What were you put through on your stag ?

I went to Croatia , to a place called Hvar. The guys had me wearing all sorts of outfits [including] a stag shirt with different things you had to do as challenges, from getting a girl to put makeup on you, to kissing a bald head. The last one was to drink a pint out of a stranger’s sock… quite disgusting, actually.

You’re about to go on tour with Take That. Did your heart skip a beat when they asked you to join them?

Olly Murs

It was funny because Gary [Barlow] emailed me and said, “Olly, I’ve been told there’s this idea of us going on tour together next year, that you’d come on and be a special guest. Is that true?” I said, “Yeah.” He goes, “But you did an arena tour last year – I’m confused.” I went, “Gary, I would be honoured to be on tour with you guys, I see this as a bucket-list thing.”

They’re such iconic artists, and a band that I grew up listening to. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Gary. I’ve been friends with Robbie [Williams] as well, who was obviously part of Take That. Mark [Owen], I did Soccer Aid with a few times, and Howard [Donald] is great, I see him at Manchester United. It just comes at a really good time, perfect to be a part of it.

Do you have a favourite Take That song?

When I did X Factor in 2009, I waited at the O2 all day… got in front of the guy, the producer, and he asked me, “What song are you going to sing?” I said, “Paolo Nutini’s New Shoes.” He went, “If I have to hear Paolo’s New Shoes, Kings of Leon, or Bridge Over f***ing Troubled Water again, I’m going to lose my head. Can you sing another song?”

I sung [Stevie Wonder’s] Superstition, got a yes. When I finished, he said, “Look, piece of advice, in your next audition [in front of the judges], sing that song and a Take That song, and you’ll be fine.” So, I did a song called Up All Night, that was my backup… I’ve never told anyone that before.

Take That's Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen on stage

What is the most memorable thing that’s happened to you on the road?

When I toured America with One Direction. That is probably something that I’ll never experience again. We had thousands of fans following buses, running down the street after cars, and then realising it was me and not Niall Horan [laughs]. You got girls going through garbage trucks, bins at hotels, and we had top-end security at every hotel we went to… we’re turning up at Universal Studios, Florida, and it’s all closed down, just for me and 1D to go round and use the rides. That level of madness. Even I felt like an international superstar for five minutes.

Congratulations on soon becoming a dad . In terms of the logistics of touring, I’m assuming you have a plan of action for when the baby is born…

There’s quite an intense plan in place, which has been a stress, I think, for my tour manager and management team. What will be, will be… when it comes, it comes, whether it’s in the middle of a show, or not. We planned this tour way before the baby was a thought, so now’s it’s here, it’s happening. You know in Home Alone, when they’re running through the airport, that music, that

chaos? That is me. That’s what I’ll be like, heading back from wherever in the country to the birth of my baby.

What are you looking forward to about being a father? Anything you’re not prepared for?

That, at some point, your child is going to hate you. That scares me a bit. But also, I understand that, because at some point there’s times when I hated my parents. Not hate as in a real dark kinda hate. It’s more, you have to be the bad guy sometimes… trying to be a dad and a best friend, if I can find that balance, that will be great.

Olly Murs with wife Amelia showing her baby bump

It’ll be when they’re going through their (ahem) Troublemaker phase… will you be going down the celebrity baby name route, with something inspired by fruit or vegetables? No one’s christened their kid Broccoli yet, so that’s up for grabs.

[Laughs]. Well, listen, me and Amelia love our greens, so that’s possible! No, we’ve not gone down that route… we’ve really thought about, you know, from nicknames, to what they might be called at school, and what they might think at 18, 19, 20. We’ve got some really beautiful, amazing names. You’ll have to wait and see.

What are your music plans? Can we expect a follow-up to your 2022 album Marry Me in the foreseeable future?

Now, the most important thing in my life is Amelia, who’s pregnant, and the second most important thing is that the baby comes safe, and then after that being a dad… I love the music and I’ll continue to do it, but when I’m doing an album, I need to be in it. At the moment, I’d say I’m not really in it. For example, if I just turn this camera round [turns the camera to show a baby’s cot], that’s what I’m in: cots. That’s what we’re up to these days.

You also turn 40 next month (May 14). How do you feel about growing older? I’m 38 and I’ve started investing in all the retinols to hold back Father Time.

I mean, 40, 40s, you start seeing things. The grey hairs start to come through, your nostril hairs, ear hairs… you’re having to trim areas of your body you didn’t think you’d have to [laughs]. Them sort of things are a bit worrying, but I’m embracing it. I’ve always – the last three or four years – put my body first, my health first, training well, eating well… you reap the benefits of that.

Olly Murs performing

Can you remember a standout encounter you’ve had with a fan?

I’ve had so many beautiful moments. Some really sad moments as well. I was with a woman recently, her son [died by] suicide. We were at a retreat in Essex, and this lovely lady came in and sat with me in a sauna…

I said, “What brings you here?” She said, “Oh, I’m here because my son [died by] suicide a few years ago. I’m just here to sort of rebuild me life.” We just had a chat about suicide and chatted about people that we’d lost.

Obviously, I spoke about Caroline [Flack], and what I went through, my own personal experience… I don’t know how she felt, but it was like she needed to talk to me, and I said to her, “The most important thing is that you talk about it, the fact that me and you, two strangers that met today in a [sauna], pretty much in our swim gear, sweating” – it was one of them really funny conversations where at the end we were laughing, “We need to get out,” because we were both absolutely [dripping with] sweat!
