Hotel General Manager

Sales manager, housekeeping room attendant, guest services attendant, front desk agent, executive housekeeper, small hotel or guest house owner/operator, chief concierge.

OVERVIEW The General Manager is the most senior executive of a hotel or motel, although he or she might report to the owner or executives of the parent hotel chain. They set room rates, develop the budget for each department, approve expenses and establish the standards for service to guests. The General Manager also has responsibility for front of the house operations as well, setting standards and overseeing restaurant and banquet operations, guest services, housekeeping, and decor.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Useful skills are leadership, entrepreneurship skills and communication skills. In addition, planning and budgeting experience, business management skills and time management skills are all assets to this position.

DUTIES Hotel General Managers plan and direct the operations of hotels, motels, resorts, and similar organizations or departments within these facilities. They prepare budgets, monitor expenses, and schedule/supervise staff.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION You usually need a college diploma or university degree in hotel management or a related field if you work for a hotel chain or other large organization. You need several years’ experience, and this experience may replace formal education.

OVERVIEW Sales managers (also called sales representatives) are responsible for selling products and/or services as identified in the sales and marketing plan of an organization. Sales managers are self-motivated, able to set and achieve goals and use time and efforts effectively and efficiently. They have effective selling skills and strong product/service knowledge, and are able to adapt what they sell to meet specific client needs.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A sales manager requires good communication skills, a confident, optimistic personality and must enjoy working with people. An ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and personality traits that include self-discipline and self-motivation are necessary, as is a professional attitude and demeanor. Previous sales experience and customer service experience may be requested, as may be sales and marketing experience, business and financial experience, and time management skills. Thorough knowledge of the product and services being sold and understanding of the region and sector/industry is typically require.

DUTIES Promote products or services, identify and solicit new clients or target groups, prepare sales reports and track activities, estimate or quote prices, credit terms, warranties and delivery dates, prepare sales contracts, process orders and make delivery arrangements, may help set direction or guidelines and assign or review work of others, may help organize and conduct sales campaigns and participate in trade shows or other promotions.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A secondary school diploma is required. A college diploma or university degree in business, tourism or marketing may also be required.

OVERVIEW Housekeeping room attendants provide for the comfort of guests in hotels, motels, resorts, etc. by ensuring that guest rooms and public areas are clean and properly presented. A housekeeping room attendant promotes a positive image of the property to guests, and must be pleasant, friendly and able to address problems or special requests.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Physical mobility and stamina are required, as is an ability to attend to detail and to follow instructions. A professional attitude is required, as well as the ability to work independently, quickly and carefully. Customer service experience may be requested, good communication skills are desirable, and, although cleaning skills and product knowledge can be taught, ability is preferred. Good organizational and teamwork skills are an asset, as is knowledge of the facility and services.

DUTIES Stock and sort supplies in linen closet and on housekeeper's cart, vacuum, clean, dust and polish guest rooms, make beds, change sheets, remove and replace used towels and toiletries, deliver and retrieve items on loan to guests, e.g. iron and ironing board, ensure security of guest rooms and privacy of guests, perform rotation cleaning duties (e.g. steam clean carpets) as required.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A secondary school diploma is preferred.

POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS Assistant or Executive Housekeeper, Laundry Supervisor, Aircraft Groomer.

OVERVIEW Guest services attendants provide service to guests at the main door or lobby of an accommodation property. They help with luggage, offer information, and generally endeavor to make each and every person's stay a pleasant one. Work can be very fast-paced, especially during the high season, but extra effort may be rewarded with gratuities. Guest services attendants are often the eyes and ears of a property as they are constantly moving around it and often notice issues that need attending to.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A professional attitude is required, as is an ability to work as a member of a team. Good communication skills, customer service skills and an enjoyment of working with people are also necessary. Physical ability to lift and carry heavy suitcases and other items is necessary. Also requested might be good time management skills and knowledge of facility, services and locale.

DUTIES Provide guests with verbal or written information about the facilities, services, room choices and rates, and area attractions, make room reservations following established procedures, using computerized or manual systems handle guest arrivals and departures, handle guest keys, mail and faxes, compile record sheets or log books, guest accounts and vouchers, prepare bills and process payments.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A secondary school diploma is preferred. Post-secondary training in tourism is advantageous.

POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS Concierge, Guest Services Manager, Assistant Front Desk Manager, Front Desk Manager.

OVERVIEW Front desk agents provide many guest services. Often a guest's first impression of a property is the result of the front desk agent's skills and abilities. Front desk agents work in the lobby or reception areas of hotels, motels, resorts and other accommodation facilities. The position is challenging and varied, and offers the opportunity to work flexible hours and meet many new people (as well as welcome regular customers to the establishment).

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Good communication skills, professional attitude and organizational skills are necessary, as is an enjoyment of working with people. Experience in customer service, sales or tourism is suggested, and an ability to use a computer and handle cash is typically required. Also requested might be administrative skills or experience, and skills in sales and marketing, and/or time management. A second language is beneficial, as is knowledge of the facility, services and local area.

DUTIES Assist guests with arrivals and departures, handle guest's concerns, offer referrals for services, and handle requests for information. Handle and store luggage, assist with the check-in and check-out of groups and tours, provide valet parking, assist other departments as required.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A secondary school diploma is required. Post-secondary training in tourism or hotel management is advantageous and sometimes necessary.

POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS Front Concierge, Assistant Front Office Manager, Front Office Manager, Customer Service Agent, Purser.

OVERVIEW Executive housekeepers direct and control housekeeping operations and staff of the housekeeping department. An executive housekeeper manages many priorities and demands and is able to solve problems and support staff, as well as perform the duties of a housekeeper when required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A professional attitude and experience working in housekeeping is required, as is experience as a supervisor or manager. An executive housekeeper must also have management and business skills, human resource management skills, and financial management skills. Customer service experience, purchasing and inventory skills may be requested, as might knowledge of specific products, equipment and techniques.

DUTIES Establish and/or implement operating procedures and standards plan and co-ordinate the activities of housekeeping supervisors and their crews, co-ordinate inspection or inspect assigned areas to ensure standards are met, apply human resource management skills such as hiring, training and evaluating performance, complete financial management tasks such as setting and adhering to a budget, handle administrative tasks.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A secondary school diploma is preferred. A college diploma in tourism or business management is an asset.

POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS Front Office/Rooms Division Manager, Housekeeping Director, Rooms Division Executive.

OVERVIEW An owner/operator of a small hotel or guest house business plans, directs and manages all the daily and long-term operations. This position offers the opportunity to work flexible hours and meet new people. Business tasks can often be combined with household tasks (e.g. breakfast for guests can be purchased at the same time as groceries for the household). Ensuring the enjoyment and comfort of guests is the owner/operator's number one priority, and he has the ability to do this creatively in ways that appeal to him.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Experience in tourism is required of a successful small hotel or guest house owner/operator. Organizational skills, marketing, sales and customer service skills, and good communication skills are also necessary. In order to manage the tasks required, administrative skills, accounting and cash control skills and knowledge of business, the sector, industry and locale are mandatory. One must enjoy people and have a tolerance for strangers staying in their home as well. Desired skills for this position include management, leadership, risk management and human resource management skills. Financial management skills and office or business experience are also assets, as would be an ability to speak a second language.

DUTIES Meet guests' needs related to overnight stays and meals, respond to enquiries and solve problems, offer tourism information and promote local area, use business management skills, use sales and marketing skills, complete financial management tasks, use administrative skills, maintain facility, equipment and supplies.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A college diploma or degree in business, tourism, marketing or hotel management is useful. Training in first aid, food safety and small business management are all assets.

POSSIBLE CAREER PATHS Expand business, purchase larger operation, Manager/Executive in other tourism businesses.

OVERVIEW A chief concierge supervises both guest services attendants and concierges. A concierge serves the needs of guests in hotels, resorts and other accommodation facilities by providing information and special services to enhance guests visits. The position is varied: a concierge may be asked to book elusive theatre tickets, give directions to a local festival or recommend a doctor.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Good communication skills and customer service skills are required. Also necessary is a strong knowledge of the community, area and region, as is guest services or concierge experience. Also requested might be skills or experience in problem solving, organization and time management, and supervision. A second language may also be a requirement.

DUTIES Supervise and direct guest services attendants and concierges, communicate directly with guests, in person or by telephone, provide information on facilities and services, events and attractions, tours, travel routes and transportation schedules, provide area maps, brochures and other literature, arrange tickets, bookings, appointments and reservations for guests.

RECOMMENDED EDUCATION A secondary school diploma is required. Post-secondary training in tourism or hospitality management is an asset.

Sports tourism is a big deal and there are lots of opportunities to teach your chosen sport to others, from running surf lessons in Portugal to offering ski instructing in Japan to yoga teacher training courses in Costa Rica, there are lots of opportunities available.

A tour guide is a very popular job in travel and tourism. A tour guide is responsible for running tours of a particular area or attraction. This could range from day tours around Rome to month long tours across multiple countries in Africa. Some tour guides are employed by a travel organisation and other work independently. Recently, many travel bloggers have started to run tours too.

An event planner is someone who plans events! They will coordinate all aspects of professional meetings and events, such as weddings, sporting events, concerts, conferences etc. They often choose meeting locations, arrange transportation, and coordinate many other details.

There is usually some degree of security that is required at events, especially big events such as football matches or concerts. Typically at such events there will be a whole team of security staff, this might include: general security guards, bodyguards, gatekeepers, crowd control, mobile patrol, and armed guards.

Theme parks are big places, meaning that they have lot of jobs in travel and tourism! The most obvious job is operating rides, however there are also lots of other opportunities within a theme park working as an entertainer, food and beverage assistant, ticket sales, cleaning and more.

Jobs in travel and tourism

Most tour operators will hire Resort Representatives, also known as Holiday Representatives, to represent the holiday company in destination. These representatives will usually have accommodation provided for them in resort and this work is often seasonal (i.e. you will work during winter for a ski resort and during summer for a summer sun resort).

Their main responsibilities are to provide customer service to holiday makers, deal with any problems that might occur, conduct welcome meetings and to sell excursions. There are also Airport Representatives who are responsible for airport transfers and Children’s Representatives who work with children and run children’s clubs and activities.

A risk manager is an important job in travel and tourism. A Risk Manager will be responsible for managing the risk to an organisation, its employees, customers, reputation, assets and interests of stakeholders. Their job is to identify and assess threats to an organisation, put plans in place for if things go wrong and decide how to avoid, reduce or transfer risk.

An Events Sales Manager is responsible for sales related to events. There are many jobs in travel and tourism that involve tickets and sales- in fact, some might argue that selling tickets to attractions, accommodation options, transport etc is at the heart of the travel and tourism industry! Here are some jobs in travel and tourism that fall under this category-

A Tour Operator is a person who comes up with ideas for holidays. Tour Operators will conduct research into this, design the holiday itinerary and content, prepare contracts, organise accommodation and transport and make arrangements for necessary guides, tour leaders or resort reps etc. They will then market the package and sell to travel agents .

Being a travel Agent is one of the most popular jobs in travel and tourism. A Travel Agent sells holidays to tourists . This could be from a desk in a high street travel agent, phone the phone in a call centre or from behind a computer for online travel agents.

In recent times we have seen many independent travel agents starting up their own businesses too- these usually work from home and are small businesses.

There are many Ticket Agent jobs in travel and tourism found in different sectors including: rail, airlines, bus companies, cruise lines and tourist attractions . Ticketing agents are responsible for making and confirming travel arrangements for passengers. They are employed by railroads, airlines, bus companies, and cruise lines. Ticketing Agents will typically sell tickets in terminals, plan routes using computers and manuals, and calculate ticket costs.

Salary range- £12,000-£24,000 per annum

Every business needs a person or people behind the scenes who are responsible for business development and growth and whilst you might not see these people very often (because they often work behind the scenes), this is actually one of the most important jobs in travel and tourism! Business Development Managers develop a network of contacts to attract new clients, research new market opportunities and oversee growth projects. They also make sales projections and forecasting revenue, in line with projected income.

Requirements- Knowledge of businesses, preferably a degree or higher level qualifications

Bureau de Change cashiers process cash transactions from customers in national and foreign currencies. They provide information on the conditions and exchange rates for buying and selling foreign currencies, make deposits of money, record all foreign exchange transactions and check for money validity.

Travel writing is an important job in travel and tourism. Whether you are writing a travel-based novel, an informative blog post, an article for a magasine or a guidebook, there is a big demand for travel writing.

Many travel writers work on a freelance basis, meaning that they are self-employed and they contract their work to various parties such as magasines or websites.

Travel blogging has become increasingly popular (and competitive!) and recent years. A travel blogger may have their own blog or they may write for other blogs, or both. Travel blogging isn’t just about writing- it is about developing a brand, maintaining a website, managing social media and promotion, selling things (online courses, merchandise, affiliate products (e.g. cameras, tickets to tourist attraction, hotel bookings) etc). It can take years to grow a travel blog to a point where you can make a reasonable income.

A travel vlogger is someone who creates video diaries of their travels, they will often post content on YouTube, although they can also use alternative platforms if they choose to do so. This job requires technical filming equipment and video editing skills. As with blogging, it can take years for a vlogger to build a big enough audience to make money. Money is usually made from paid sponsorships and adverts as well as products sales (e.g. online courses, merchandise, affiliate products (e.g. cameras, tickets to tourist attraction, hotel bookings), Patreon membership etc)

A Travel Influencer is essentially any person who has ‘influence’. This is usually related to people who have large followings on their social media or websites. Being a Travel Influencer can take a lot of time (it can take years to build a social following) or a person could reach fame overnight when a post goes viral or when they attract the attention of mainstream media or other major Influencers. An Influencer will usually make money by collaborating with brands to promote their products and services- this could be hotels, clothing companies, tourist boards and tourist attractions to name just a few.

There are also ‘behind the scenes’ jobs in the social media scene too- major Influencers and organisations will often hire social media managers and administrative staff to help manage their workload. These roles will involve conducting research into trends, hashtags etc and analysing which posts work well, which times of day are best to post etc. They will be responsible for scheduling social media and responding to comments.

A Pilot is responsible for the safe operation of an aircraft. He/she will plan the route and communicate with Flight Traffic Control to safely navigate the aircraft from one destination to another. There are different ranks for pilots, most will begin as a First Officer and some will then work towards becoming a Captain.

Training to be a pilot is a barrier for many people as the costs to do so are very expensive (£100,000+). There are no student loans available for such training.

A Border Force Agent checks that all passengers meet the criteria for entry into the country. They will check passports and travel documents of all passengers arriving into the country, this could be by sea, air or rail . They are also responsible for detecting and intercepting prohibited goods.

A Flight Dispatcher is responsible for making sure that the aircraft is ready for departure. They will undertake a number of checks to ensure that the aircraft is fit to fly and provide the Pilots and Cabin Crew with the relevant information (e.g. weather reports, flight plans, passenger list).

A Loadmaster is required to plan how items and people should be loaded into the aircraft. This includes mathematically planning the correct placement of both cargo and passengers whilst also ensuring passenger comfort and safety and securing cargo.

An Airfield Operator is responsible for ensuring the safe take off and landing of aircraft, maintaining navigational aids, performing inspections and communicating with air traffic control.

The head of the department is the Captain, the highest ranking person aboard. This is then followed by 1st, 2nd, 3rd Officers; Safety Officer; Security Officer; Deck Cadet and Deck Ratings – Boatswain/Bosun, Carpenter, Able Seaman Unlimited, Ordinary Seaman Entry Level and Deckhand.

Every cruise ship will have a marketing department. Within this department there are a range of roles ranging from general marketing managers to photographers and videographers.

There are a number of jobs that workers can do within a casino, including people who help to run and operate the games/machines, security guards, customer service representatives, cashiers and cleaners.

A Front Desk Operative is a person who is the first point of contact for all customers of a business. Their responsibilities will general include greeting and welcoming guests, receiving and delivering all incoming and outgoing mail and packages, answering all calls and directing as needed, scheduling meetings, and coordinating office activities.

A Receptionist is usually the first person that you will meet when entering a business, for example a hotel. Their main responsibilities include greeting visitors, answering telephones, taking messages, scheduling appointments, filing and maintaining documents, providing information to various people, making travel arrangements, running errands and performing various administrative tasks.

A Tourism Consultant is a person who will provide expert guidance and advice. they are very knowledgeable in their field and can command high salaries as a result. Tourism Consultants may work for Governments or for specific organisations.

Members of the Human Resources team are responsible for the daily administrative and HR duties of an organisation. They assist with recruitment and record maintenance for payroll processing as well as provide clerical support to all employees.

Requirements- Administrative Capabilities

Whilst recruitment may be undertaken by the HR team in smaller organisations, many large travel and tourism organisations will employ staff members to work specifically with recruitment, for example airlines. A Recruitment Manager will oversee all of the recruitment process, contracts and onboarding process for new staff.

Salary range- £35,000- £55,000 per annum

As I mentioned earlier in this article, marketing is big business in travel and tourism and there are many jobs in this field. Many people will start off as a Marketing Assistant, preparing and managing marketing material and conducting analysis on marketing campaigns, and they will progress on to become a Marketing Manager.

There are many administrative jobs in travel and tourism. These have traditionally been office-based jobs, whereby staff will undertake various tasks such as taking notes, recording information, completing spreadsheets etc. However, recent years have seen a number of administrative positions that are undertaken remotely arise, often referred as as a Virtual Assistant.

Requirements- Ability to conduct administrative tasks

All business have books that they need to manage and many businesses will hire staff especially to do that. Finance or Account Managers are responsible for monitoring income and expenditure and ensuring that all finances are adequately recorded. They will also undertake/facilitate annual tax returns and any other relevant documentation.

These countries have been popular for centuries, making a culture of tourism deeply rooted in European societies. Destinations such as France , Italy , and Spain are especially popular, and the tourism industries there are concentrated on the historical and cultural traditions of each country. 

Australia and New Zealand have been experiencing an increase in tourism in recent years. From the coasts, to the mountains, to bustling cities, these countries are prime locations for those looking to explore beyond the well-worn path of Europe’s historical landmarks. Tourists in Australia and New Zealand are typically younger, making for a very vibrant and energetic travel culture that can be exciting to work in.

South America and Central America , with their indigenous and Hispanic cultures, ancient ruins, and delicious food, have been making a name for themselves in the tourism industry. Ecotourism has boomed in certain countries, such as Costa Rica, shifting travelers’ exploration to an emphasis on rainforests and beaches, and emphasizing an appreciation for natural wonders.

You’ll gain hands-on experience in the core of the industry through travel and each of its moving parts to accommodate guests.

Salaries & Affordability

Salaries for international tourism jobs will vary depending on what part of the industry you decide to work in and what country you choose to live in.

The average flight attendants’ salary is around $38,800, whereas those interested in working as a tour guide can make anywhere between $27,000 and $40,000, although your salary is commensurate with your level of knowledge and experience. When working as a contracted tour guide (hired by another company to give tours), the company will typically pay you a lower base salary, with the assumption that you will earn more in tips.

In Europe, full-time work in hospitality will pay approximately $1,500 a month, sometimes with a room and some food provided. However, this may vary from country to country; the type of establishment (hostel vs. resort) may also affect your salary too.

Although the corporate world of travel provides less on-the-ground experience, you are compensated by a higher salary. Tour consultants for companies that organize tours abroad can earn on average around $41,000 with the opportunity for bonuses.

Analysis of the current state of active tourism in Perm region has been done. In the last years surge of interest in active tourism increased. The modern structure of active tourism become more complicated. Organized tourism is divided into commercial and secretive commercial tourism. The unorganized form currently represented by classic amateur and newly appeared spoon-tan types of tourism. The stereotypes of active tourism ware considered. Trends in active tourism and associated risks have been identified. The main causes of accidents on tourist routes had been analyzed. The accident takes place among unorganized groups of tourists. It was established that one of the main reasons for the accident-free passage of the route is the human factor. Groups of amateur tourists, who have preserved the experience of sing-and-go of Soviet tourists, rarely get into emergency situations. Groups of spontaneous tourists, who have no experience of joint pass over routes, get into emergency situations more often. They use social networks in preparation for the journey and tourist groups are formed from the well-tea travel companions with different motivations for passage of the route. The quantitative assessment of unorganized tourists simultaneously going to water routes in the Perm region has been quantified. Their number is about four thousand people. Of this group, the greatest probability of emergency is in the spontaneous form of organizing tourist trips.
