Master of Management in Travel And Tourism Services Management Course Requirements
Students who wish to gain admission to complete a Master of Management in Tourism and Hospitality Services Management need to have successfully completed a Postgraduate Diploma / Honours / in Tourism Management or equivalent as approved by SAQA with an average pass rate of 65% or higher and a minimum of 60% for the Research Methodology module. Students also need to complete a PowerPoint Presentation showing why they wish to study towards a postgraduate qualification.
In addition to the academic qualifications, the following admission criteria also need to be satisfied before a recommendation for admission can be made:
The proposed topic must be appropriate for higher degree research and it must be consistent with the academic aims and objectives of the student.
The student must have access to the necessary resources, facilities and the necessary budget in order to complete the degree within the timeframe.
There must be a qualified staff member holding confirmed, continuous or fixed-term appointments of sufficient length for the purposes of supervision of the proposed research and student.
The proposed program of work must be able to be completed within the maximum period of submission for the degree.
A suitable level of contact with the university supervisors must be maintained.
Where the applicant is currently employed, capacity to meet the timelines and other requirements must be considered.
The proposed research cannot reproduce research that has previously been submitted for the award of a degree or diploma.
Where the intellectual property rights of the applicant may be a consideration, a suitable agreement protecting the rights of the student needs to be signed. If the student is unwilling to sign an agreement, the research proposal may not be approved and the student may be required to choose another topic in an area that is not commercially sensitive.
The applicant should have no outstanding financial obligation with the University and in the case of international applicants, they should be able to verify the necessary financial capacity to undertake the program.
The applicant must possess sufficient English language proficiency.

What Are The Requirements For Diploma In Tourism Management At VUT?
The Admission Point Score (APS), course arrangements, and previous academic requirements must all be met before applying to VUT to pursue a Diploma in Tourism Management.

Diploma: Ecotourism Management at VUT
Diploma in Ecotourism this module enables students to develop fundamental knowledge of ecotourism development principles that are essential in the operation/management of protected areas.
Application Process
First, you have to make sure that you meet the admission requirements of the programme of your choice.
Admission requirements can be found under the courses and programmes.
General Admission Requirements
The minimum entrance requirement for admission to studies at the Vaal University of Technology is a Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification. A pass mark is required in at least one of the languages of instruction (English) of the University at Higher Grade (HG) or Standard Grade (SG).
If an applicant offers an N3 qualification as an entrance requirement, it should comprise at least four subjects, plus pass marks in two official languages (of which one must be English), at least at Senior Certificate level (SG).
Additional requirements are specified for each course/ instructional programme. Prospective students must please note that in the faculties of Engineering, Applied and Computer Sciences the minimum required symbol for Mathematics, Physical Science, and in certain cases English, are HG (E) or SG(C).
In the other Faculties and pending the course you want to enroll for, the average recommended subjects are: Accounting, Business Economics, Economics, Mathematics, Typing, Biology, Home Economics, Art, Physical Science, Clothing and Needlework.
Degree courses: Admission requirements regarding post-diploma and degree studies are available on request.
All applications will be selected on merit by the department concerned.
A candidate who is at least 23 years of age may apply for conditional admission.
The Candidate’s application must be accompanied by the following:
A certificate stating formal qualifications.
Recommendation from the applicant’s employer stating that he/she has the necessary experience and communication abilities to complete the proposed instructional programme successfully.
If an application is conditionally approved, the candidate shall only be admitted to the second semester/year of study, provided that the full first year/semester course has been completed successfully.

National Diploma: Tourism Management
There is a specific need I many areas of the economy for high quality graduates at the management level who understand the tourism industry and are able to make use of their knowledge and experience. This management-based diploma programme will prepare students for employment in the public and private sectors, managing, developing and planning tourism resources at a junior to middle management level.
The programme provides students with a broad-based, academically rigorous study of management concepts, theories and techniques as they apply to the international tourism industry, develops transferable managerial skills and equips students with basic research and problem-solving skills to commence an effective career or access post-graduate study. It promotes the application of this knowledge and understanding in the critical analysis of management, tourism and travel issues, in the development and evaluation of solutions to real life problems, which can be transferred into vocational settings.
The learning developed through this programme should enhance employment opportunities and broaden knowledge for those working in a diverse range of organisations including travel agencies, theme parks, visitor centres, hotels, airlines, events and conferences, cultural attractions, consultancies, government departments and many others that interface with tourism. Furthermore, the course develops important transferable skills for the future tourism manager, including decision-making problem solving and communication.
Throughout the course learners have the opportunity to experience both the theoretical and practical aspects of tourism, whilst also developing research and presentation skills. The field work and in-service elements provides an excellent opportunity to study “behind the scenes” at real tourist attractions and organisations, proves an excellent way to exemplify what is studied during lectures.
Therefore, the course aims to achieve a balance between the vocational skills necessary for immediate employment and the more fundamental principles necessary for further study. Graduates will be able to:
- Integrate managerial, financial and entrepreneurial principles to strategically plan, manage and sustain tourism businesses.
- Apply the principles of integrated, sustainable planning and development of different types of tourism and leisure destinations and facilities.

Dr Burger: a woman who believes that development of others is extremely important

Dr Susanna Burger is an emerging academic scholar, who aspire to learn and equip herself with knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis. She started as a contract Lecturer in 2011 at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) with basic experience in teaching and research. She then pursued various avenues to enhance herself as an academic scholar. “I have enhanced myself from being a contract Lecturer, to being appointed as a Lecturer, and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2015” she said.
She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Tourism and Integrated Communication and since 2017 a Programme Coordinator for the Tourism programme. In addition, she is acting as a Research Professor in the Faculty of Human Sciences at VUT for the past four years.
She added that it has been a great learning curve and privilege for her to act in this position and at the same time be a Programme Co-ordinator. She further stated that she has acquired valuable skills and knowledge about university processes, research practices and people which are highly relevant in a Higher Education context. “I hope to use the knowledge and skills to improve teaching, learning and research at VUT and in the Higher Education sector” she alluded.
Her key performance areas as the Acting Research Professor in the Faculty of Human Sciences are to support and increase research productivity within the faculty.
Dr Burger regards the development of others as extremely important as she believes that a leader can influence others positively by showing empathy and resilience despite setbacks.
Her motto in life is “Advance yourself through learning” and her advice to young females is to “stay positive and find a work-life balance” she concluded.
