Zhengzhou Travel Guide - How to Plan a Trip to Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou, the capital city of Henan Province is renowned as one of the eight historical capitals of China. With a rich culture, long history, and a significant contribution to Chinese culture and civilization, Zhengzhou is called the cradle of Chinese civilization.

Zhengzhou History

Zhengzhou borders the Yellow River to the north and Mount Songshan to the west. It was the capital of the Shang Dynasty (1766–1050 BC) 3,600 years ago and it served as the capital four times during later states and dynasties.

Since 1950, archaeological finds have shown that Neolithic settlements existed in the area . The Shang Bronze Culture flourished there from about 1500 BCE and was centered in a walled city. Outside this city, in addition to remains of large public buildings, a complex of small settlements has also been discovered.

Zhengzhou was called Zhongzhou in ancient times, which means 'Middle Province', when it was the transportation hub of ten provinces. Luoyang and Kaifeng, both of which are famous historic cities and among the eight historical Chinese capitals, are just an hour from Zhengzhou. Zhengzhou is also central to the remaining five.

Zhengzhou City Now

Zhengzhou is still one of the main transportation hubs in China , but now as a key node on the high-speed rail network.

The city has also won the title 'Green City of Central China' because of the characteristic tree of Zhengzhou, the chinar tree, planted on both sides of the main streets of the city.

25 Best Things to Do in Zhengzhou (China)

The capital of the Henan province, situated in the geographical center of China, Zhengzhou is a city of about eight million people. With most of the population being Zhengzhou natives, it’s one of China’s relatively unexplored cities, but packs in heaps of history – the area is known as the birthplace of Chinese civilization – a unique modern culture, distinct food, wonderful buildings and gorgeous surrounding natural beauty in the scenic Yellow River area that spreads around it

A stay in Zhengzhou can make the most of these attractions; engaging in the city’s historic temples, visiting the alleged ‘ghost town’ area of Zhengdong to see if there really are any people, shopping at the bustling markets, eating the specialties of the province and journeying outside of the city to make the most of the spectacular countryside.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Zhengzhou :

1. City God Temple

City God Temple, Zhengzhou

Situated on the northern side of Shangcheng Road in Zhengzhou City, the City God Temple is a large and complex ancient place of worship; in fact, it is the largest in the Henan Province.

Dating back from the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the building’s original use was to protect the Daoist god, but the original building was torn down by both natural disasters and people’s interference.

But what is left of the temple remains magnificent; and today admirers come to enjoy the artwork that embellishes The Happy Building, to wander around the different buildings and to experience in the folk art and craft fairs that frequently take place.

As it lays within the city center, the temple is easy to reach and generally free to explore, unless a temple fair is happening when cheap tickets must be purchased.

2. Antique Market

Zhengzhou Antique Market

Zhengzhou Antique Market is located near the center of the city and is one of the biggest antique and handicraft markets in China; it’s so large it is actually two separate markets!

The South City collects most of the antiques and handicrafts while the North City is home to the furniture dealers, a food court and conference facilities. It’s a must-visit for any furniture or antique enthusiasts and collectors!

If you are planning on making purchases, it’s worth noting that there are some restrictions about antiques that you can take out of China; you are not allowed to export items of a certain value, or that are over 200 years old, for instance. Make sure you research before buying anything to avoid losing your new items at customs!

3. Zhongyuan Tower

Zhongyuan Tower

The 388 meter Zhongyuan Tower is located in the city center and is a popular Zhengzhou tourist attraction. The tower was built in 2011 and in 2012 it was one of the twenty tallest towers in the world.

Nowadays it is a modern television tower, revolving restaurant and has a high observation deck. It’s a great place to enjoy a luxurious meal or take in the view of the city and surrounding province spreading beneath.

4. Yellow River Scenic Area

Yellow River Scenic Area

The Yellow River Scenic Area is located northwest of the city and encompasses five scenic spots.

Five Dragons Peak is named after a range of five mountains and encompasses elaborate pavilions and fantastic views of the river.

Camel Mountain Range is dominated by a figure of Yu the Great.

Yueshan Temple which features the Purple Golden Pavilion and the Peony Garden

The Stone Figures of Yandi and Huangdi who are regarded as the ancestors of the Chinese

And finally the Ancient City of Liu Bang and Xiang Lu which is littered with figures of war horses and soldiers.

The Yellow River is the second largest river in China and is known as the birthplace of Chinese civilization.

5. Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel

Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel

Located in Renmin Park, the Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel was once the tallest Ferris Wheel in China and the second tallest in the world (after the London Eye).

Nowadays, there are three others of equal size and one taller in China alone, but a ride on the Zhengzhou Ferris Wheel is a refreshingly different way to view the city and definitely one of the best things to do in Henan’s capital.

6. Shang Dynasty Ruins

Shang Dynasty Ruins

If you’re interested in Ancient Chinese history, the Shang Dynasty Ruins are a must-see.

Reachable by bus from the city center, they are preserved sections of an ancient wall from 3500 years ago, when the Shang Dynasty was in power of China.

The colossal size of the walls located in downtown Zhengzhou are marvelled by many of its visitors, and are a fantastic spot to spend a few hours while visiting the city.

7. Zhengzhou Confucian Temple

Zhengzhou Confucian Temple

Located near the city center, Zhengzhou Confucian Temple is housed in a beautiful building and reflects on the culture of worshipping Confucius and other sages.

Visitors to the Confucian Temple come to admire the decoration of the Dacheng Hall, the Jade Emperor’s multicolor artwork on the building (which represents the Taoist deity and the stories of the Three Kingdoms), and the sacrificial ceremonies that are hosted at the temple every Spring and Autumn.

8. Novotel Tower

Novotel Tower

If someone was asked to think of an icon of Zhengzhou, the Novotel Tower of the Zhengdong district might come to mind.

The tower was made famous on the 60 Minutes TV show, which advertised the area of the city as a ‘ghost town’. The TV show claims that Zhengdong, like other areas in China, are expanding before their time; that the government is creating towns without the necessary resources to fill them, thus making areas where nobody actually lives.

Since the infamous TV show, various writers and photographers have visited Zhengdong and have proved that the sweeping claim made is not entirely true, but the Novotel Tower’s unique contemporary architecture is now synonymous with the city of Zhengzhou and is a must-see for any tourists to the area.

9. Orient Shopping Center

Empty halls of the ghost mall

Have you ever wondered what a shopping mall looks like – with no people? The Orient Shopping center, located in ‘ghost town’ Zhengdong is home to an array of ‘shells’ of shops, with the signs already in place.

After a walk around the center,  you’ll probably believe the ‘ghost town’ reports– although other shopping centers just around the corner will immediately disprove this theory. Orient Shopping Centre is an eerie, almost apocalyptic place that gives an interesting insight to China’s national development.

10. Zhengdong New District Financial Center

Zhengdong

It might not be your stereotypical tourist attraction, but the Zhengdong New District Financial Center is a fascinating destination for all those interested in modern Chinese culture and architecture.

The area has been recently designed, modelled on Shanghai’s Pudong District. This is the supposed center of ‘ghost town’ Zhengdong, but an exploration around the financial area – which is hardly heaving, but definitely shows some signs of life – proves this statement to be not completely accurate.

If you like cityscapes, you’ll get a great view of Zhengdong with some intriguing contemporary architecture, offering a great insight to modern Chinese architecture, economy and society.

11. Have a Typical Henan Breakfast of Hulatang

Hulatang

Soup for breakfast might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s the normal morning meal of choice for the Henan province and should be sampled for at least one breakfast while you’re in the city!

Guoliang Village

Guoliang Village is tricky to get to, but is well worth it. The village used to be cut off from the province; with the only way to reach it being steps cut out of a very steep cliff.

Due to the elevation of the village and the difficulty of the climb, the stairway was named the ‘Sky Ladder’. Tourists nowadays visit Guoliang Village to admire the ‘Sky Ladder’ and appreciate the bravery that went into creating such a treacherous path.

There is spectacular scenery to the area, and the villagers are welcoming and inquisitive towards tourists. The village itself is built, in its entirety, from stone; making it a very unusual place to visit.

To reach the village, you must take a train from Zhengzhou to Xinxiang and then a bus to Huxian Bus Station. From here, a bus can be taken to the Wanxianshan Scenic Area. At this point, the park and the village are both accessible by hiking. Here’s some more detailed directions if you plan on making the trip: http://www.chinahighlights.com/zhengzhou/attraction/guoliang-village-hideaway.htm

A Visitor's Guide to the City of Zhengzhou

tourism zhengzhou china

Zhengzhou (郑州) is the provincial capital of Henan (河南) Province, located in central China. The Yellow River carves its way through Henan and it boasts four of China's ancient eight capitals as well as the birthplace of Chinese civilization. Zhengzhou is experiencing a revitalization from recent wealth coming into the province and the whole city seems to be getting a facelift: new buildings, new roads, new signs. Everywhere you turn there's a construction site. In a few years, it might be a pretty city full of newly planted trees and modern buildings. Right now, it's not worth spending time in the city itself but is the place to launch a journey into China's ancient past. From Zhengzhou, the visitor can make day trips to Shaolin Temple , the home of China's most famous martial art, Kung Fu, as well as the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Zhengzhou is about 470 miles (760km) south of Beijing and 300 miles (480km) east of Xi'an. The Yellow River, one of China's major waterways and the cradle of China's civilization, flows to the north. Mount Song, Song Shan , sits to the west and the Huang Hai plains surround the city to the south and east. The city is a major transportation hub as two major railways intersect here as they crisscross China. You'll have no trouble finding a train or plane to get you to Zhengzhou.

Zhengzhou was the first capital of the Shang Dynasty (1600-1027BC), the second dynasty recorded in Chinese history. Ancient packed-earth city walls can still be seen in some parts of Zhengzhou. Inhabitants of the city are proud of their heritage. The best way to review Zhengzhou and Henan province history is by visiting the Henan Provincial Museum, Henan Bowuguan , in Zhengzhou.

Attractions

  • Shang Dynasty Ruins
  • Henan Provincial Museum
  • Yellow River
  • Shaolin Temple
  • Longmen (Dragon Gate) Grottoes

Getting There

  • Air : Zhengzhou's airport lies about 21 miles (35km) outside the city center. If you've already made hotel reservations, contact your hotel about transfers from the airport. There are a few hotel counters in the airport where you can make reservations upon arrival. You can easily take a taxi to your destination although remember to bring along your hotel name and address to show the driver (preferably in Chinese).
  • Bus : The long-distance bus station is near the railway station in the southwest part of the city. From here you can take mini-buses to other Henan cities or to attractions outside of Zhengzhou.
  • Rail : The railway station is opposite the long-distance bus station in the southwest of the city. Zhengzhou is a major railway transit hub. It is possible to take short train trips to Henan's other historical cities such as Luoyang (2hrs) and Kaifeng (1hr), as well as long-distance destinations such as Beijing (12hrs), Shanghai (14hrs) and Guangzhou (36hrs). Bookings can be made at Erqi Lu #133 or at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Getting Around

  • Bus : Bus is an inexpensive way to get around Zhengzhou as most tourist attractions are not within walking distance from hotels. Ask your hotel/concierge how to take the bus to your destination.
  • Taxi : Personally, we always take taxis when traveling to new cities in China as they are still quite affordable and more comfortable than buses. It's essential to carry a map, hotel taxi card and any other information with you to help the driver understand your destination.
  • Population: 7 million
  • Telephone Code: 037 (when dialing from overseas, drop the first 0)
  • Weather: In central China, Zhengzhou has a relatively mild climate in that it doesn't see the extremely cold temperatures of the north or hot temperatures of the south. July is the hottest month with reported temperatures on average of 80F (27C). January is the coldest month with average temperatures of 32F (0C). Spring and fall are peak tourist times but going off-peak is rewarding to miss the crowds.
  • Recommended time for visit: 2 days.
  • Best time of year to visit: Officially spring and autumn are the best times of the year due to mild temperatures. However, we visited in mid-December, a decidedly off-peak time and found it to be wonderful. There were virtually no tourists at the major attractions but the weather was very sunny, dry and pleasant.

Where to Stay

While there are a number of hotels popping up all over Zhengzhou, probably the best bet as far as convenience and comfort is to choose from the Intercontinental Hotel Group's tier of three properties. All three hotels are within the same compound so you can use the facilities easily and conveniently.

  • Top End: Crowne Plaza Zhengzhou
  • Middle End: Holiday Inn Zhengzhou
  • Budget: Holiday Inn Express Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou [dead link] (郑州 Zhèngzhōu ) is a city on the south bank of Yellow River (Huang He) in China. It is the capital of Henan Province . Zhengzhou is a convenient starting point to explore a series of Chinese cultural sites, like Kaifeng , Luoyang and Shaolin Temple .

Understand [ edit ]

tourism zhengzhou china

The name Zhengzhou comes from a city in the Sui Dynasty, but its actual location was in modern day Chenggao . During the Tang Dynasty, the name switched here. The area remained an unimportant backwater until it was selected for development by the Chinese Government after 1949. Zhengzhou is now a major transportation hub in the center of the country, and a rapidly growing city.

Zhengzhou City is located in the north-central part of Henan Province, where the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River divide.

By the end of 2022, the resident population of Zhengzhou City was 12.8 million.

History [ edit ]

According to the division of "Shangshu - Yugong", Zhengzhou belonged to the "domain of Yuzhou" among the nine states in the ancient times.

China's second slave dynasty, the Shang Dynasty , established its capital in Zhengzhou more than 3,600 years ago as the founding capital, Bo Du.

During the Ming Dynasty , a reform of the nation's local establishment was carried out, with the introduction of a three-tier system of provinces, prefectures (directly subordinate prefectures) and counties, and the Guancheng County was transferred to Zhengzhou. At that time, Zhengzhou still had four counties, Xingyang, Xingze, Heyin, and Sishui, but they were subordinate prefectures (county-level). Together with Zhongmou, Xinzheng and Mi counties, it was subordinate to Kaifeng Prefecture.

In October 1948, after the liberation of Zhengzhou by the Central Plains Field Army, Zhengzhou City was established in the urban area of Zhengxian County, directly under the leadership of Henan Province .

In 1954, Zhengzhou City became the capital of Henan Province.

Get in [ edit ]

Zhengzhou City is a national transport hub for railway, aviation and mail. As of September 2023, Zhengzhou has 2 terminals, 2 runways, 162 air routes, 6 railway stations, 2 main railway lines, 6 high-speed railway lines, 9 metro lines, 11 motorways, and 37 BRT lines.

By plane [ edit ]

An airport shuttle bus leaves from Zhengzhou Hotel, centrally located and costs ¥15.

A public bus runs from the airport to the Aviation Hotel (民航酒店 Mínháng Jiǔdiàn) on Jinshui Road (金水路 Jīnshuǐ Lù). It costs ¥25.

Taxis to the airport will cost around ¥120-140. While the distance implies it should only be ¥60, you're charged for the round trip driving. Bargaining seldom helps as locals pay this price as well.

The airport is now served by the Zhengzhou Metro Line 2's Chengjiao (Suburban) extension. The first and last trains depart at 06:30 and 20:00 respectively. Additionally, mainline rail service connects the airport to Zhengzhou and Kaifeng (mostly to Zhengzhou East Station), at intervals fluctuating between approximately 30–60 minutes.

By train [ edit ]

Zhengzhou is China's biggest train hub; you can get here from nearly every major metropolitian area in China . There are several arrivals each day from Beijing (about 11 hours, or 5½ hours by high-speed rail), Guangzhou (about 18 hours), Xi'an (about 5 hours, or 2 hours by high-speed rail) and Shanghai (about 14 hours, or 6 hours by high speed rail). Trains arrive from other places less often. The Hanoi to Beijing train also stops here.

Be sure to clarify which of the two stations your train will arrive at or depart from:

  • 34.747508 113.653666 2 Zhengzhou Station ( 郑州站 ) ( in the main city centre ). Serves all regular and some high-speed trains.
  • 34.760178 113.772113 3 Zhengzhou East Station ( 郑州东站 ) ( on the east side of town in the Zhengzhou New Area ). Exclusively serves high-speed trains. 45 min by metro from Erqi Square (二七广场).

By bus [ edit ]

Across from the train station, you will find a long-distance bus station. Buses arrive regularly from almost anywhere in Henan province. Buses may be less comfortable than the trains, but are cheaper and you do not have to push and shove your way in and out of the train. You are guaranteed a seat but sometimes buses wait to fill up, rather than leaving at a set time, and be aware that long-distance buses may be sleepers rather than seated if the trip is very long.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The city's focal point is Erqi (February 7) Square (二七广场). This large public square comes alive at night, when an entire market fills the space with vendors and locals hanging out. From the square, several main streets fan out to different areas of the city.

Since Zhengzhou was handpicked to serve as a transportation hub - and does not have a very long history as a large city - the urban planning is more noticeable here than in other places of China. This means there is plenty of green space, tree-lined streets and logical arrangement to the city.

Zhengzhou is relatively spread out, but most sites are accessible by public bus, which costs ¥1 or ¥2 per ride - depending on whether or not there is air-conditioning, those with A/C being more expensive but usually less crowded.

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxi fares begin at ¥8 in the day, and ¥10 late at night (after 22:00), with each kilometer after the second costing ¥1.5. All taxis are metered but sometimes the drivers will try to cheat foreigners.

By metro [ edit ]

The Metro system has seven lines in operation:

  • Line 1 runs east-west that connects Zhengzhou Station, Zhengzhou East Station and a few other points of interest.
  • Line 2 is a north-south route, and runs to Nansihuan (with through services to Zhengzhou International Airport on the Chengjiao line). You can transfer to Line 1 at Zijingshan (紫荊山) station.
  • Line 3 is an L-shaped line connecting the northwest with the southeast. It runs south from the Henan Sports Center in the southern part of Huiji District and then turns east after reaching Erqi Square before eventually reaching Henan Orthopaedics Hospital in Guancheng District.
  • Line 4 is another L-shaped line running from northwest to southeast. It begins at Laoyachen in Huiji District, intersects with Line 3 at the Henan Sports Center, then continues east until it reaches Dragon Lake, whereupon it turns south and heads toward Langzhuang in central Guancheng.
  • Line 5 functions as a loop line around the city center.
  • Line 14 serves the CBD area to the west of the city, though as of January 2021, only 3 stations have opened.
  • Chengjiao line is a suburban metro line, starting from Nansihuan in Guancheng and ending in Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport. There are through services through Line 2. The southern extension of Chengjiao line to Zhengzhou South Railway Station is expected to open in 2023.

On most lines, the first train leaves each terminus at 06:00 and the last at about 23:00. However, on the Chengjiao line, trains stop running at 22:00, and on Line 14, the trains only operate from 08:00 to 20:00.

Fares are calculated by distance traveled, ranging from ¥2 (within 6 km) to ¥9. A journey shorter than 6 km costs ¥2; ¥1 is charged for every 7 km after 6 km, every 8 km after 13 km, and every 9 km after 21 km. Children under 130 cm may ride for free when accompanied by an adult. Single journey tickets can be bought from ticket vending machines at every station. Tap it on the sensor on the ticket gate when entering and insert it into a slot at the exit gate where the ticket is reclaimed.

Lv Cheng Tong (绿城通, literally: "Green City Pass") is a rechargeable contactless smart card which can be used on the metro and buses in Zhengzhou with discounts. A 5% discount is available for taking Zhengzhou Metro using Lv Cheng Tong compared to using single journey tickets.

Climate [ edit ]

Cold and warm air masses alternate frequently, and the four seasons are distinct in spring, summer, autumn and winter. The winter is long and dry and cold, with little rain and snow; the spring is dry and less rainy, with more spring drought, changing temperatures and winds.

Parks and nature [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

There's relatively few things to do in Zhengzhou but a possible evening might involve eating at a Sichuan or Henanese restaurant, buying yourself a bottle of decent Dynasty wine, parleying with the local clientele, getting lazy, and rounding off the evening at a KTV bar.

  • Museum Area . One thing worth knowing about is that the museum area is also the area of the 2 branches of government - federal and communist - so the area is much nicer. We are talking trees and some flowers along with a more neighborhood feel that might remind you of Shanghai. Do not expect wild nightclubs, but it is a more pleasant place to be if you are looking for a walk. Erqilou is fine, but a bit dirty, so see this other side of Zhengzhou if you get a chance. Also, some nice places to eat are in this area.

Amusement parks [ edit ]

It is quite a huge amusement park. Be aware most rides have a 90-kg limit for anyone using them, sometimes staff can be strict and refuse to let you ride even after you have paid to get in. ¥160 (adults), ¥80 (children between 1.2 and 1.5 metres in height), ¥50 (special price for entry after 17:00). Free entry is granted to children under 1.2 m in height and adults over 70 .

Buy [ edit ]

Large department stores and international brands tend to be concentrated around Erqi (February 7) Square. The two major department stores are Kingbird (金博大) and Beijing Hualien (北京华联), which are next to each other. Both stores have supermarkets in their basements.

Some of the most interesting gifts can be purchased at the city's antique market. Most of the shop owners will have a calculator handy so you can bargain by typing in prices. Consider that you got a good deal if you pay half of what they originally quoted. The people are friendly but many of the shops sell fake antiques made to look old. Nevertheless there are interesting items that will decorate your walls or look great on a stand back at home. You can even impress your friends by telling them you bought them an antique from China.

Some of the small shops sell real antiquities. You'll know when you're buying one because the prices will rise dramatically from about ¥100 or less for fake goods to well over ¥5,000 for the real deal.

China will not let foreigners take antiques out of the country that are over 200 years old or possibly even more recent items depending on their cultural value.

Make sure you know where your wallet is at all times. There are some unsavory characters in the markets. This is, in fact, true of Zhengzhou in general, which has a reputation for pickpockets. Buses are especially risky. Keep your wallet in your front pocket.

Eat [ edit ]

Zhengzhou has a diverse array of fine Chinese cuisine. Its location at China's center means you can find almost any type of Chinese food here. The city is big enough to have a scattering of cosmopolitan restaurants, and while there are a number of imitation Korean, Japanese, Indian, and Western options about, you will do best to stick with Chinese food.

One of the most representative delicacies in Zhengzhou, braised noodles.

Zhengzhou braised noodles are made from high-quality fresh lamb and lamb bones. After soaking, the bones and meat are boiled together over high heat to form a white soup, and then flour is mixed to form a soft noodle. After repeated kneading, the noodles are manually pulled into strips of varying widths and thicknesses and placed in the pot. The lamb is then paired with yellow cauliflower, black fungus, and vermicelli. When dining, small dishes such as coriander, chili oil, and sugar garlic are added to make the taste more fresh.

Budget [ edit ]

There is the usual assortment of dumpling shops and noodle joints on every street and back alley.

There is a good number of Sichuan restaurants, which makes sense considering the proximity to the Province of Spice.

You should not miss a special breakfast in Zhengzhou ( hulatang ), it is a special soup, a little spicy. You better go to Shunhelu where you will find the best hulatang in town.

Noodles , especially the mutton noodle (羊肉烩面 yangrouhuimian ) and beef noodle (牛肉拉面 niuroulamian ) are must-eat in Zhengzhou. There are three good yangrouhuimian restaurants with many locations, ask a taxi driver to take you the nearest one, and you will taste the best delicilous huimian in Zhengzhou:

  • Xiaoji ( 萧记 ).
  • Heji ( 合记 ).
  • Jufengyuan ( 聚丰园 ).

Other cheap eating places include:

  • Night market in Erqi (February 7) Square . A good place for a snack and scenery.

Mid-range [ edit ]

Chinese [ edit ].

Some of the finest Chinese restaurants are located on Jingsan Road (经三路). To find these restaurants, ask a taxi driver to take you to Xiaonanguo Restaurant and just look around. You will find a number of options about:

  • Xiaonanguo ( 小南国 ), 经三路北16号 . Excellent restaurant featuring regional dishes from all over China.

Other Asian [ edit ]

  • Tudali ( near the corner of Wenhua Road and Huanghe Road ). Korean-style restaurant and bar. If you have an affinity for soju, this is the place for you.

Muslim halal food is available all throughout Zhengzhou, with the banner on the entrance board saying Mata'am al muslimeen (Restaurant of the muslims) in Arabic. The food tastes delicious. Once you go and eat at these restaurants you just feel like coming back again, especially those yangrou chuars (lamb kababs) taste yummy:

  • Muslim Restaurant , Erqi Square ( Near the mosque and Beijing Hualian Mall ).

Western [ edit ]

  • Crowne Plaza . A good place for Western cuisine with an Italian restaurant and a Western-style pub. It offers a buffet during dinner including Brazilian Rodizio and a desert bar. There is also a smattering of pizza and pasta joints called Cappuccino around the city.
  • New Island Coffee . Serves a plethora of dishes including waffles and fajita-style meat plate alongside a smattering of coffee and deserts and has several locations throughout Zhengzhou.
  • Cibo Coffee , Jinsan Road . Among the best Western restaurants in the city. You can order Chinese food by the plate or Western food like steak in set meals with many courses. Each plate is a small portion but overall the set meals are a great deal, for ¥75-200 you get many plates of very good food. Make sure to ask for the dishes to come one at a time for the best dining experience.
  • Toscana Cafe , Weilai Road at Wei Wu Road, Jin Jiang Garden , ☏ +86 371 - 65628899 . 11:00-23:00 . A very good Italian-style restaurant in North-eastern Zhengzhou. Considering the owner and staff have never been outside of Zhengzhou or China, it is pretty decent food, and not badly priced. Lasagna noodles are made in house and they have an American chef to try to help them become "more authentic". He updated the Caesar Salad dressing, and it is well worth a try! ¥40-200 .

Drink [ edit ]

There are bars around the city, but the best area for drinking is around the tree-lined Weiyi Road:

  • Target Pub , On the southernmost block of Jingliu Road (经六路) near the corner of Weiyi Road (纬一路) . Old ex-pat favorite. Lao Wang, who speaks great English, is the proprietor of this staple Zhengzhou dive bar.
  • Helen's , Just north of Target across the street . ¥6 Tsingtao for foreigners, popular
  • Tao Bar , Near the corner of Jinshui Lu and Jingqi Lu . A lively new bar opened near the corner Jinshui Lu and Jing Qi Lu.
  • Bird Bar , On Jing Qi Lu, a ways off Jinshui Lu, the main road . A small bar on Jing qi Lu. Laid-back mood, fooseball, etc.

Other areas:

  • Western Pub , Nongye Road ( to the right of the Henan Provincial Museum ). For an unusual drinking experience, consider this pub, located in a bunker-like concrete building. This place features a cabaret-style show with a mix of song, dance, and jokes. Unless you understand Chinese, it will be mostly incomprehensible, yet the experience will give you insight into Chinese drinking culture. The place is noisy, smoky, crowded, and occasionally bizarre. You can order half-a-dozen or so bottles of beer by the bucket. Try to get there early, around 19:00, as the show ends around 22:00 or 23:00. This building also houses one of Zhengzhou's movie theaters.

Sleep [ edit ]

Zhengzhou is not a major backpacker stop, so there are few cheap lodgings in the city. That said, there are some hotels that offer real value for money if you are more than two people. As with most Chinese cities, there are several a bit run down hotels to be found near the train station. These might be your cheapest options. Most likely English is not spoken but you can get a room for ¥50 or even cheaper if there are two people splitting a bill for a double room. Bargain, especially if you are staying more than one night.

  • Home Inn , Jiefang Road (解放路) ( short walk from Erqi Square ). This is your best bet on a budget hotel. It is a relatively new chain with several locations around town. This listing is the most centrally located. Another good location is on Zhengyi Street (政一街) near Jinshui Road (金水路). The rooms are super-clean with tile and laminate floors and a fresh coat of paint. Complimentary high-speed Internet hookups are installed in all the rooms. A standard going for around ¥180, breakfast buffet for ¥10 .
  • White Dove Hotel ( 郑州白鸽宾馆 ), 中原区中原西路183号 , ☏ +86 371 67621616 , fax : +86 371 65319618 . Discounted rates for doubles start just above ¥100 .
  • Home Hotel . Chain of business hotels scattered about the city. Their rooms are clean and have a style that invokes a SoHo loft more than a Chinese hotel.
  • Jinjiang Inn , 92 Hongqilu . Double rooms have one large and one standard bed. There is another branch on 46 Zhonghanghailu. ¥138-159 .
  • Guangzhou Hotel , Erqi Road ( Near the corner of Jinshui Road ). Caters to business travelers. Doubles start at around ¥240 with a discount .
  • Erqi Hotel ( in the main square ). This hotel might be a little loud at night. Full service rooms are about ¥250, budget rooms with shared bathroom for ¥150 (can be hard to get) .
  • Londoo Hotel , Erqi Street ( close to Erqi Square ). Massive Chinese-style business hotel with well-worn carpets and paper-thin walls, but otherwise functional. A discounted standard room goes for ¥190 .

Splurge [ edit ]

  • Sheraton Grand Zhengzhou Hotel , No.33 Jinshui East Road, Zhengdong New District ( Nongye South Road (Zhengzhou Metro Line 1), Exit 3 ), ☏ +86 371 6063 6666 , [email protected] . New hotel. The rooms are well appointed, and the buffet breakfast spread has good reports. ( updated Sep 2017 )
  • JW Marriott Hotel Zhengzhou , Millennium Royal Plaza, No 2 Central Business District, Zhengdong New District ( Exhibition Center station (Zhengzhou Metro Line 1), exit C2 - 5-10 minute walk ), ☏ +86 371 8882 8888 . Go next [ edit ]

Henan awaits:

  • Kaifeng is a laid-back town about 90 minutes to the east of Zhengzhou. Enjoy ancient temples and an escape from Chinese skyscrapers. Sizeable night market comes to life in the evenings too. Kaifeng was the capital of several dynasties before it slid into irrelevance the last 200 years. Buses leave every half hour from Zhengzhou central bus station (90 min). Alternatively, there are quite a few trains in the morning and evening to Kaifeng station (45 min) from Zhengzhou station. High speed trains depart half hourly to Songchenglu station from Zhengzhou East.
  • Another great city nearby by is the ancient capital of Luoyang , home to the Longmen Grottoes . The city is worth a look, with an interesting old section and easy walking downtown. It's about three hours by bus, which leave Zhengzhou every hour or so. An express - the "elephant bus" or kuai che - costs ¥40. One train in the morning departs from Zhengzhou station straight to Luoyang Longmen station (45 min) very close to the grottoes.
  • Yuzhou is a small and relatively undeveloped city, off the main rail network, but well worth a visit to see the Jun Royal Kiln Museum and to get an insight into life in Henan off the tourist trail. One and a half hours by bus, and very walkable once you get there.

Zhengzhou travel guide

Zhengzhou travel guide

Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, lies at the heart of China's vast interior plains. Nicknamed the "Railway Heart of China" and "Crossroads of China", Zhengzhou holds a special place in every Chinese heart.

The Green City, commercial hub, Erqi Memorial Tower, stewed noodles, Shaolin Temple, tree-lined boulevards, Chang Xiangyu, Deng Yaping...Zhengzhou is not pretentious, but no one can deny its cosmopolitan character, inclusiveness, and laidback comforts.

A bowl of noodles, good friends, skewers and beer, local Henan opera - this lifestyle continues. Nowadays, Zhengzhouers also enjoy shows at the Provincial Arts Center, golfing nearby, and sipping fine wines from their cellars with loved ones.

Life flows gently, which does not hamper Zhengzhou's rapid growth. High-speed rail shoots it into 350+ km/h speeds, while Metro Line 1 ties the east and west together. Visitors may wonder - why so many cars and people? How finish such a big bowl of noodles? But once immersed, you'll find it embodies Zhengzhou's prosperity, cohesion, and simplicity.

Chinese Mother River, Understanding 5000 Years of Culture

No trip to Zhengzhou is complete without experiencing China's second longest river, the venerated "Mother River" of Chinese civilization. As the cradle of ancient Chinese culture, the mighty Yellow River has nurtured the Chinese nation since antiquity, bearing witness to five millennia of tumultuous history. Visit the Yellow River Scenic Area to take in the river's impressive power and vastness. Stand atop the Yellow River Bridge to admire its broad waters churning downstream, carved cliffs rising on either side. Feel the weight of history and Mother River's benevolence that gave birth to Chinese culture. This awe-inspiring river shaped the Chinese people; shaped their resilience, traditions, and identity. By visiting the iconic Yellow River in Zhengzhou, appreciate how this waterway intertwines with the essence of being Chinese.

Early Spring Visits Zhengzhou University to See Cherry Blossoms

Though less historic than Wuhan University's famed cherry blossoms, Zhengzhou University bursts into just as stunning a floral display each spring. Spread across Zhengzhou University's sprawling new campus, rows of cherry trees explode in pale pink blooms come early April. To celebrate the annual cherry blossom season, the university hosts a lively Cherry Blossom Festival featuring live music, food stalls, and perfect photo ops. Stroll under canopies of delicate sakura from tree to tree and feel like you've entered a pink floral paradise. Capture the ephemeral beauty of these flowers in full bloom before the petals scatter to the ground. Getting there is easy via Bus 72, 68, B12, 322, 56, or 328. Time your Zhengzhou trip over a weekend in early April to experience one of China's most dazzling university cherry blossom spectacles.

Exploring the Spiritual Homeland of Henan Merchants

Step back in time at Zhengzhou’s sprawling merchant estates built centuries ago during the prosperous Henan business empire. The most grand is the nationally renowned Kang Baiwan Manor – the spiritual homeland of the wealthy Kang clan and one of China’s top three manors. “Kang Baiwan” refers to the prominent Kang family, who grew affluent over 12 generations and 400 years to epitomize the success of Henan merchants. Empress Dowager Cixi herself bestowed the “Kang Baiwan” name marking their influence. Wandering through opulent courtyards and ornate gardens, get a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles of China’s merchant elite. Other recommended mansions include Zhang Gao Manor and Liu Zhenhua Manor. In Zhengzhou, discover the enduring legacy of Henan’s profitable history as a center of trade and commerce.

Huangdi's Hometown, Ancestral Worship Ceremony

Zhengzhou was the birthplace and capital of China’s legendary first ruler, the Yellow Emperor, venerated ancestor of the Chinese people. According to ancient records, 5,000 years ago the Yellow Emperor united scattered tribes into the first Chinese nation. He pioneered writing, medicine, silk, technology, and more foundations of civilization that propelled China’s preeminence. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, millions of overseas Chinese worldwide journey to Zhengzhou for the ceremonial worshipping of this revered ancestor. Feel the weight of history at this hallowed homeland where Chinese culture was born. Join the grand procession to the Yellow Emperor's mausoleum. Observe customary rituals like burning incense and paper money to honor this progenitor. By participating in this roots-seeking tradition, connect with the long lineage of Chinese culture and community.

Bar Street, Barbecue Workshop, and Art

For a lively night out in Zhengzhou, head straight to Nongke Road Bar Street. Neon signs for bars like Blue Moon, Western Liquor City, Wow Entertainment Plaza, and Up Up light up the night. Each venue has its own vibe, from hip hop to rockabilly and everything in between. Even the skewer joints seem like bars here. The aptly named "Interesting" Kebab House transports you into an artsy cavern blending prehistoric and industrial design. With dazzling lights, thumping music, and rotating electric grills automatically spinning kebabs, it's a bar experience wrapped in childhood BBQ nostalgia. Savor skewers hot off the flames while sipping a cold brew for a perfect night. Reach Nongke Road easily by public bus numbers 2, 9, 32, 42 to Huayuan Lu Nongke Lu Station.

Shaolin Kung Fu, Joyful Jianghu

Nestled beneath the Five Breast Peak of Song Mountain lies the legendary Shaolin Temple. Founded in 495 AD to house an Indian monk, Shaolin is the birthplace of Shaolin kung fu and Zen Buddhism. Shaolin's mastery of martial arts made it world famous as the "Foremost Temple under Heaven." Visiting Shaolin Temple offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient traditions of Shaolin kung fu, where monks rigorously train their bodies and minds. Watch them demonstrate astounding techniques honed over lifetimes. For an immersive experience, stay overnight at the temple to wake up at dawn for Tai Chi practice and venture into the mountains for meditation amid nature. As the font of China’s profoundly influential Shaolin culture, this temple showcases Zhengzhou as the "Capital of Kung Fu.” Come experience the fascinating heritage of Shaolin in the heart of China.

Archaeological evidence confirms human activity in Lianyungang's ancient Mount Qushan and present-day Mount Jinping area as early as 10,000 years ago. In 1959 and 1978, the oldest Paleolithic sites in southeast China were discovered at Erjian and Daxian Village with clear stratigraphic layers. Mount Jinping has 19 Neolithic sites, with Erjian being one of China's earliest farming areas.

The 20-meter long, 10-meter wide "General Cliff Painting" discovered in 1979 was appraised by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage as "an extremely important cultural relic and rare major discovery, the earliest 'book' in China."

The Donghan era art treasure "Kongwang Mountain Grottoes Statues" are the earliest Buddhist grotto statues in China, 100-200 years earlier than the Dunhuang Grottoes, and protected at the national level.

The area is also steeped in history, with attractions related to Confucius' sea gazing, Emperor Qin's inspections, and famous poets and officials like Tao Yuanming, Li Bai, Su Dongpo, Shen Kuo, Li Qingzhao, Wu Cheng'en, Li Ruzhen, Wu Jingzi, Lin Zexu, Zhu Ziqing and more.

Safety considerations.

When at crowded places like train stations, bus terminals, and metro stations, keep a close eye on your belongings to prevent theft. Areas with high tourist traffic like Tiananmen Square also attract scammers, so tourists should be wary of unlicensed guides demanding money upfront. Avoid handing over any cash to solicitations on the street. Use registered taxi companies like the red Beijing taxis whenever possible. Keep valuables secured and hidden, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and be alert in public transportation hubs and tourist sites. When needing assistance, go to authorized help points like the Beijing Tourist Information booths rather than individuals roaming the streets. Beijing is a generally safe city if simple precautions are taken. Report any incidents or suspicious activities immediately to the nearest police officer. They can also provide directions and other help. Enjoy sightseeing, but remain aware of the surroundings.

What to do in Zhengzhou

1. go way, way back to the birth of china.

A fascinating attraction for ancient history fans, Zhengzhou contains the ruins of the ancient Shang capital. The Shang dominated the Yellow River valley around 4,000 years ago, so we're dealing with some seriously old structures and, given their antiquity, there's plenty to see. Head to the eastern part of modern Zhengzhou to see the Shang walls in all of their glory, and what remains of probably the largest city in the world during its heyday. Then muse on the passing of time. There's no better place to do so.

2. An Invaluable Primer For Henan's History

Definitely the number one museum in Zhengzhou, the Henan Provincial Museum is famed for its distinctive pyramid structure, and is home to a vast collection of relics and artifacts, ranging from the Shang (and earlier) to the Chinese Revolution, much of which unfolded in the Henan region. If you're into handcrafted Chinese pots, golden flutes, and intricate Warring States period jewelry, the collections are exquisite. As of late 2017 most of the museum was in the middle of a brief refit, but was scheduled to reopen in 2018. Even so, the building and the open halls are worth exploring.

3. Get Happy At This Daoist Delight

Translated into English as the "City of God" temple, this is Zhengzhou's undisputed religious highlight. From the moment you set eyes on the Mountain Gate, this Daoist complex never ceases to delight, with its appropriately named "Happy Building", impressive main temple building, and galleries showing folk art by the people of Henan. It's also very much a living temple, hosting raucous popular festivals and markets on a regular basis, so you might get a lot more than a standard tour.

4. Zhengzhou's Buzzing Commercial Nexus

The heart of Zhengzhou, Erqi Square is the place to head for shopping and recreation. Getting there is easy. You can't miss the Erqi Memorial Tower, which commemorates a labor strike during the Chinese Revolution. When you get downtown, you'll be in the thick of Zhengzhou's commercial hub. Head down Renmin Road towards the Grand Shanghai City Mall, and you'll pass by plenty of electronics stores (after all, you're in the world's iPhone manufacturing capital). But there are plenty of noodle bars and dumpling kitchens around as well.

5. Observatories, Kick-Ass Monks, And Daoist Peace

Located around 40 miles southwest of Zhengzhou, Mount Song is out of the way, but definitely worth making the effort to visit. In the Daoist faith, Song is seen as one of the "five sacred peaks" in Daoism, but it's also home to some famous Zen Buddhists: the Kung Fu fighting Shaolin order of monks. You can visit their HQ to see them in action, but don't dally too long. The Zhongyue Temple is just as interesting, maybe more so, with its 1,300 year-old astronomical observatory, while the Songyang Academy and Songyuesi Pagoda are also must-sees.

Where to Eat in Zhengzhou

Tours and activities in Zhengzhou

Visiting Zhengzhou can be a stressful experience for non-mandarin speakers, with many visitors finding they waste a lot of their time simply trying to get around and buy tickets for attractions. Our local tour guides can help, with an expert booking service ensuring you get where you want when you want.

Tour guides can be invaluable when visiting museums, galleries, and exhibitions, as there are rarely any signs in English to explain what’s being seen. With an expert local guide from Zhengzhou by your side, history will be brought to life, giving you a deeper, more cultural experience than you could have imagined.

Whether you need a guide for an hour or a few days, we can help. See our selection of packages below, or get in touch for more help and advice on arranging a tour in Zhengzhou.

Best time to visit

Zhengzhou is at its best in summer and autumn, particularly from July through to October. These months have high rainfall, but this means you’ll get to see the most spectacular aspects of the Yellow River. Spring can be nice in terms of temperature, but also tends to bring high winds. Winter is very cold.

Top Attractions in Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou has so many fun spots for kids and families so its a blooming place for family enjoyment. The city also offers blasts from the past by showcasing centuries-old history through museums and archeological remains. The mountains add scenic beauty to the destination. It is not just a city but a complete package for travelers gratification.

Henan Provincial Museum

Don’t miss the Henan Provincial Museum, a pyramid-shaped building housing artifacts, and information from the ancient civilizations who lived in this area. There are some English signs to help you uncover the history and a half decent audio guide in English too.

The Shang Dynasty Ruins

The Shang Dynasty Ruins are a must-see attraction in the city, where you can see the remains of the old town wall dating back to 2,000 B.C. The site hosts the famous Shangcheng Bonsai Garden, with some of China’s most adorable miniature trees.

Yellow River Scenic Area

If you love the great outdoors, the Yellow River Scenic Area is a great place to spend some time. Consisting of five scenic spots; Camel Mountain, Yueshan Temple, Five Dragons Peak, Stone Figures, and an ancient city, this area is around 90 minutes from the city center by bus and is a beautiful place to spend some time.

Song Mountain

Song Mountain, one of the five sacred mountains in Taoism, is an easy day trip from Zhengzhou. Here you’ll find the Shaolin Temple, considered to be the birthplace of Zen Buddhism, as well as numerous options for hiking, mountaineering, adventure, and recreation.

Zhengzhou Zoo

Top of the list for most children is the Zhengzhou Zoo, housing all manner of birds and beasts amongst landscaped gardens. Surprisingly, information is pretty well given in both Chinese and English, and kids will enjoy the small rollercoaster, amusement park and cable car ride across the park.

Century Park

If your kids like rides, Century Park is just 30 minutes from Erqi Square and has a great selection of kid friendly rides.

Traditional shops

Away from these modern facilities, you’ll find plenty of more traditional, interesting shops. Look out for lacquerware, made from Chinese parasols, as well as Miyu jade objects which are a local specialty.

Junk shops housing numerous antiques, replicas, and tourist tat can be found all over the city, but be careful with what you buy as you aren’t allowed to leave with any objects more than 200 years old.

Getting here and getting around

The Zhengzhou airport is around 30-km outside the town center and is easy to get to and from with a regular shuttle bus. Taxis will cost around ¥140 from the terminal to the city center.

Many visitors arrive in Zhengzhou via train, and today the city is China’s largest train hub. Connections to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an are daily, with the option of either high speed or standard train services. A long-distance bus station is located next to the train station, which travels more slowly than the train but is cheaper and less crowded.

Zhengzhou is a fairly spread out city, but you can get pretty much anywhere for just ¥1 per ride. A modern, clean metro line serves the city from east to west, and more lines are under construction for the future. Taxis are readily available too but agree on a price first as drivers have been known to cheat foreigners.

Eating and drinking

Being centrally located in China, Zhengzhou brings together the best all of all the regional cuisines and delicacies. The city boasts restaurants of all manner of food, including international options if you so desire.

Some of the more traditional local dishes include Liyu Sanchi, a fish dish using a special type of carp from the Yellow River called a Cyprinoid. It’s steeped in fresh water for three days to remove the earthy taste, and then cooked three ways to produce a fried fish, a sweet and sour dish and a hearty soup.

Other authentic Yu dishes include Tong Zi Ji (a chicken dish) and Si Tao Bao (four types of bird). Henan Restaurant is one of the best places to find real quality Yu cooking, but it’s often full so do book ahead. A Wu Mei Shi is just as good and tends not to fill up so frequently.

Bars are commonplace throughout the city, but the very best place to enjoy a beer is on the tree-lined Weiyi Road. Look for Target Pub and the Beer Factory as a good place to start. For beer aficionados, Master Gao’s Microbrewery produces five unique beers, all of which are actually very delicious, and are crafted from Tibetan grains.

Getting a good night's sleep

For the ultimate in luxurious accommodation, Zhengzhou boasts all the big-name brands including Sofitel, Marriott, Le Meridien, Sheraton, Hilton and Crowne Plaza. If you prefer a non-chain hotel, look to the Yuda Palace or the Zhengzhou Wanda Wenhua for a more local vibe.

Budget travelers will find plenty of choices too and should consider staying at the Royal Palace International Hostel. Accommodation is indiscreet pods, it’s very modern and there is free Wi-Fi throughout. For a middle of the road option, try one of the two Jinjiang Inns in the city, or the Holiday Inn Express for western home comforts.

Zhengzhou Travel Guide

Zhengzhou is the capital city of Henan province in the center of China with the Yellow River in the north and Huang-Huai Plain in the south. To its, East is Kaifeng, an ever capital city of seven dynasties, and another ancient capital city Luoyang lies to the west. Zhengzhou covers an area of 7,446.2 square kilometers, governing six districts, five cities, and one township, including Gongyi city which is the birthplace of Dufu, a world-famous poet, Xinzhen city where Huang emperor, the ancestor of Huaxia civilization was born, Yingyang city, and Xinmi where the Mi jade is produced. The city gross domestic product is 82,210, 000,000 and the local government finance income is 5,590, 000,000

Zhengzhou is an old dynamic city. About 3500 years ago, it had become the capital of the Shang Dynasty. Zhengzhou had been a capital city for five times, respectively of the dynasties of Xia and Shang and of the states of Guan, Zheng, and Han; and a prefecture in the eight dynasties of Sui, Tang, the Five Dynasties, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing.

Zhengzhou, located in the middle of China is a railway transportation hub throughout the country. The Beijing-Guangzhou and Liangyungang-Lanzhou railways, two major track systems in China, meet here. The Zhengzhou North Railway Station is the biggest marshaling station in Asia. Zhengzhou East station is the biggest transfer station of a Less-than-carload lot in China.

Some travelers glance over the city and grouse it is unattractive. Ignore the rumor and try to find the city's true nature through your own eyes. The Dahe Village Ruins, the sight of pre-historical culture, the Guxian Iron-smelting ruin, and the Songyang Academy are good places for exploration if you are after history.

The city is developing fast in recent years. The market system is being perfected and the retail network has taken its preliminary shape. More than 100 hundred national or regional trade fairs take place in Zhengzhou each year.

"The Business City"

Zhengzhou tourism.

Zhengzhou is the capital of the Henan province of China. What is surprising about the city is that is has a population of about 8 million people - most of whom are natives of Zhengzhou! This area is also known as being the birthplace of the Chinese civilisation!

Zhengzhou has a long and complex history. It began around 1500 BC, where there were settlements in the area. These civilizations grew and began to build buildings and move their settlements outwards. This site eventually became an important part, and maybe even the capital for a time, of the Shang civilization. Today however, the city is very well connected to the rest of the surrounding areas of China by rail, road and even air. The city also used to be a major producer of grains and nuts for the country. The current city has grown very large and now has huge industrial units everywhere. But a lot of thought has been put into the expansion of the city, to the point that they have planted trees all over the city! Zhengzhou's food culture focuses heavily on fresh food and fresh ingredients. So for anyone who would like to experience a whole new side of China, a visit to Zhengzhou is an absolute must!
