Bus Simulator PS4 Review
Alan Strawbridge / September 22, 2019
Modern consoles now have the ability to train you up for a new career – after playing Airport Simulator, I worked part-time as an air traffic controller during the summer holidays. Last Easter, I worked as a moderately successful male gigolo after playing Brothel Simulator for half an hour. And now you can realise your dream of being a cantankerous, rotund bus driver with Astragon ‘s Bus Simulator
“If you want reality take the bus.”
After a spell on PC, the developers deemed the PS4 fit for a journey around the suburbs, and aside from the curious drop in graphical fidelity, the gameplay has arrived intact.
You are thrown headlong into the career mode by a nice lady who talks you through the scenario of the town which was bereft of a public transport system, for which you have been chosen to pioneer a new bus service. Driving the first simple route on a small section of the area map teaches you the basics – indicating before pulling over or away, stopping gently at the bus stop in the right position, selling tickets to the customers (or not if you switch it off on the menu) and driving cleanly around the route without “curbing”, “potholing” or mowing down a line of commuters.
After you pass your initiation test, you can then create your own route based on the pre-existing bus stops and start making money for your new bus company. Money then brings the opportunity for purchasing one of the seven other bus models, employing new drivers to assign to your bus routes and the ability to pimp your buses with new decals and designs. Of course, you’ll also need money to pay for the numerous fines you’ll receive for errors whilst you’re out on your rounds.
“Sometimes it’s good to miss a bus. It might be the wrong bus.”
The actual driving is fairly satisfying, with the buses feeling ungainly and weighty enough to represent how a real bus feels on the road, although they don’t quite nail the satisfying inertia present in the buses in Grand Theft Auto or Wreckfest . You can switch between first person and third person, with the latter only really helpful for negotiating roundabouts and traffic, otherwise it feels a bit too detached and removes the feeling of simulation.
The first person view also enables you to see the dashboard with numerous buttons which must be pressed at some point during your shift – disabled ramp, windscreen wipers, a selection of lights, the ticket machine and of course the ejector seat for firing awkward customers into space. Actually I think I must have imagined the last one.
Pulling over at a bus stop and opening the doors enables the great unwashed to clamber aboard – once you’ve served their tickets and they’re all seated, you can close the doors, indicate (L1 or R1) and pull away. Brownie points are awarded for clean driving which are all totted up at the end of the shift and awards are given in the form of cash. Various events occur whilst you’re out on the route, such as customers listening to loud music who need to be reprimanded, littering, people blocking the doors and rush-hour traffic which will jeopardise your ability to make it to the next stop on time.
Once you’re back at the depot, you receive your awards and eventually level-up, unlocking new sections of the city map, new vehicles and the ability to brand your bus with advertising to bump up your takings.
“A bus ride is like being in another world.”
The objectives are enjoyable to complete, although there is a conspicuous lack of play-testing on occasion when it becomes apparent that the wording in the objectives doesn’t actually match any of the route modifiers. Who in their right-mind would equate a ‘Round Trip’ with the ‘Ping Pong’ option?
Building up your bus company and creating/driving new routes delivers a chilled and relaxing experience which does a good job of simulating the rigmarole of being a bus driver. You can enjoy the tedium inflicted on the bus driver stuck behind a queue of traffic from the comfort of your sofa, rather than having to haul your oversized rear-end into a pair of bus company trousers.
Where the game fails to deliver is in the visuals department. There’s an overriding dullness to the colour scheme, (which is perhaps intentional to reflect how the job affects the mental state of a real bus driver), the NPCs are hilariously wooden and simplistic, and the scenery and vehicles look like the developers accidentally included a graphics filter to simulate cataracts.
The weather effects and day/night cycles are serviceable, with the night time rain successfully making it hard to see where the bus stops are or spotting people crossing the road.
The gameplay would have been greatly enhanced with a vibrant and convincing world in which to drive your bus, rather than the dreary and dated environments on display here. The music and sound effects are great though, with the developer’s wry humour voiced through the customers as they chat while you drive.
If the idea of Bus Simulator floats your bus, you’re sure to enjoy your time with the game, as it delivers a light-hearted and relaxing experience with plenty of depth and scope for improving your public transport business during your career as a driver/manager.
If StillAlive Studios can sort themselves out in the visuals department for Bus Simulator 2020, they’ll probably widen the appeal of the series and make the simulation more convincing for the converted.
Bus Simulator is out now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

The Final Word
An enjoyably sedate outing around the suburbs, marred by the antiquated and dull visuals, Bus Simulator nonetheless provides a good chunk of all too real simulation of public transport.

Tourist Bus Simulator Review (PS5) – Seems Like A Bad Port of The PC Version
Has the potential to be an interesting management sim, but there’s just too many issues
This will be a somewhat short review of Tourist Bus simulator on PS5 as I still had progression issues with one of the early missions. As I explained in my Tourist Bus Simulator preview article , I could not seem to progress from ‘The First Trip’ mission. Unfortunately, this meant that I could not really get to experience all that Tourist Bus Simulator on PS5 had to offer.
Tourist Bus Simulator PS5 Review – Has Potential But Too Many Issues
Tourist Bus Simulator is a simulation and management game that takes place on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura. You arrive at the airport and are tasked with essentially building up a Tourist Bus company. To become a successful business, you can buy buses, hire drivers and take tourists on scheduled trips and sightseeing tours.
Tourist Bus Simulator was released on PC in 2018 and the general premise of the game seems perfectly fine. Drive buses around, buy new buses and build up your company to be successful. Unfortunately, though, the game seems like a fairly bad port to console and thus comes with several issues.
The Good Parts
Before I get into the problems I encountered I will first say that there were some good points about Tourist Bus Simulator on PS5.
The Driving Is Nice
Firstly, before you even get to drive a bus, you have to drive your own car from the airport to your new company offices. The first thing I noticed was that the driving mechanics were pretty solid. Driving feels quite realistic and responsive. The vehicles are also nicely detailed both on the outside and the inside. The dashboards for example are well detailed and feature what you would find in a real bus I presume.
There are different control options that you can choose when you start the game: Basic controls, which are simple driving controls (R2 to accelerate, L2 to brake) and advanced controls. The advanced controls mean you have to go into the game’s cross menu to change gear (into reverse for example), release the parking brake and turn on the engine.
There is also a custom control option where you can check some boxes to have basic controls for some things and advanced for others. I liked the advanced controls and it did make driving and operating the vehicles seem more realistic but my main playtime was spent on the basic controls. Because I am a bit of a noob at simulation games.
The Graphics and Island aren’t too bad either
Tourist Bus Simulator is built on Unreal Engine 4 and although the graphics aren’t of AAA game quality they are pretty nice. The vehicles look great and as I said are pretty nicely detailed. The island also looks great with good amounts of detailing on the buildings and texturing on the landscape elements.
The island of Fuerteventura also seems pretty large, probably not the biggest of game maps but is of an adequate size where it does take a reasonable amount of time to drive from one place to another. The developers have also done a great job with the sound in the game. When driving down a highway you can hear the whooshing sound as other cars and vehicles pass you. It does give you the sense of driving down the open road.
The Not So Good Parts
Although my playtime with Tourist Bus Simulator was relatively short owing to the progressions problem I faced, I did notice some other problems with the game. I can only imagine I might have found even more issues was I able to progress further and play longer.
Progression Problems
The main negative I had with this game was the fact that I seemingly couldn’t progress further than the “The First Trip” mission. I detailed exactly what the problem was in my preview article so I won’t bother going into detail here. But needless to say, I couldn’t get past this particular mission. Whether it was a glitch or me just being completely dumb I am not entirely sure. But the game didn’t provide any hints or prompts or any other information that may have helped me figure out what was going wrong.
I also contacted the developer via the PR rep about the progression issue. But they were unable to provide any information that could solve the problem. They also stated that there was a patch (launch day patch) but there was no update for the game on PS5. I was still at version 1.000.000
A Seemingly Poor Port That Has A Few Issues
As I mentioned previously the game just seems like a bad port of the PC version. Sure the UI has the PlayStation button icons, but the game menus, in particular, seem like they are probably more suited to a keyboard and mouse rather than a DualSense controller.
There were also a few glitches during my short playthrough. At the start of the game whilst in the airport, I noticed that when I walked up to a certain area that part of the building would disappear and I could see outside. Like the graphics just de-rendered. There were also other graphical glitches present in the game. I (and other players who commented on my YouTube videos ) have noticed some pop-in. And also Things like blank black patches on paths and missing doorframes.
Who Knew You Could Do GTA in Tourist Bus Simulator?
In one of my early restarts of the game to try and fix the progression issue, I also somehow managed to flip my car on its side after a crash. This seemed to break the game a bit. I could enter and exit the car but could not see a way to get the car upright again. Thus leading to yet another new game. During this crazy flipped car incident, I was able to see under the map and even was able to “steal” another car and drive it. Albeit the camera angle was a bit weird, so I am pretty sure you are not supposed to be able to “steal” another car. Check out the video below to see what I mean.
My last major problem with the game was the sun. The sun was way too bright. Driving in the direction of the sun during the day pretty much makes you blind and you cannot see anything in front of you. There also seemed to be no sun visor option. It wasn’t just the sun though, certain areas at night were far too dark so the game definitely has some lighting problems as well.
Conclusion – could potentially be a great simulation and management game but just not on PS5
Tourist Bus Simulator certainly has all the makings of a great simulation and management game with some great driving thrown in. Unfortunately, I just found there to be too many problems, with the biggest being the progression issue I faced. The game does seem to have a lot to offer but sadly the glaring issues let it down badly. There is certainly enough in the game to keep someone playing for hours and hours. Trying to build your business into a booming success does look like it would be pretty fun. But sadly it really does seem like a bad port from the PC version. And even though I only managed to play the early stages of the game, there were too many issues for me to be able to recommend it.
Tourist Bus Simulator is out now for PS5.
