North Africa and the Middle East

Magic is real, and this is where it comes from.

As the birthplace of three of the world’s major religions – Christianity, Islam, and Judaism – there’s something inherently spiritual about North Africa and the Middle East. You can feel it everywhere; in the ancient temples and mosques, in the intoxicating aromas of the bazaars and souks, even in the stunning mountains and red-and-ochre dunescapes that surround cities that have stood since the dawn of time. And while the past is your constant companion in this part of the world, there’s plenty of room to write some history of your own.

Top 10 Destinations in North Africa

tours north africa

Planning a trip to  North Africa  is an exciting and infinitely rewarding experience. However, there is so much to see and do that deciding on an itinerary can be tricky.  Adrenaline junkies should consider a trip to the ski slopes of Morocco  or to Egypt's underwater reefs. Those with a passion for breathtaking scenery should plan a tour of the Sahara Desert, while history buffs will love Egypt's treasure trove of ancient sights . Wherever your adventures take you, try to visit at least one of the following iconic North African destinations.

Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

Perhaps the most iconic of Egypt's ancient sights, the Pyramids of Giza are located just outside Cairo . Comprising three different pyramid complexes, the site is one of the original Seven Wonders of the World. Of these, it is both the oldest and the only one that still survives today. The three main pyramids serve as the tombs of the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Khufu's pyramid (also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza) is the largest and dates back some 4,500 years. In front of the pyramids lies the Great Sphinx, a vast cat-like statue carved out of a single block of stone. Want to see more pyramids? Plan a trip to the ancient city of  Meroë  in Sudan.

Marrakesh, Morocco

Nestled at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh is one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Not for the faint-hearted, it is a bustling metropolis filled with narrow streets, insistent hawkers, and a myriad of sounds and smells. It's also one of the most interesting cities in North Africa. Visitors come to Marrakesh to browse for treasures in the souks of the ancient medina, or to sample authentic Moroccan cuisine in the central square, Djemma El-Fna. Beautiful riads and serene hammams add to the experience, while the city's historic sights are well worth seeing. Start at the Saadian Tombs or  El Badi Palace .

Luxor, Egypt

The city of Luxor was built on and around the ancient site of Thebes, once the wealthiest city in ancient Egypt. The modern city has its own spectacular temple, as well as a series of excellent museums. Close to Luxor is the ancient site of Karnak, which was the most important place of worship for ancient Egyptians. Here you'll find a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons, and obelisks, all dedicated to the Theban gods. Across the Nile from Luxor lie the royal burial grounds known as The Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. This is where you'll find the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Fes, Morocco

The most complete medieval city of the Arab world, Fes is a strange and appealing mix of Middle Ages meets the modern world. Fes was Morocco's capital for more than 400 years and is still considered the religious and cultural center of the country today. The extraordinary medina city of Fes El Bali is worth a few days walking in itself, and the city tanneries make for a fascinating visit. Other highlights include the Merenid Tombs, the Royal Palace, and the Mellah, or Jewish Quarter. Many visitors find that the city is less touristy and therefore more authentic than Marrakesh.

Siwa Oasis, Egypt

Siwa Oasis is located in Egypt's Western Desert, close to the Libyan border. Characterized by its abundant olive and palm groves, it is the country's most remote oasis town. As a result, its inhabitants have developed their own distinct culture. A decent road and a small airport have helped to put the town on the map, but it remains an off-the-beaten-track destination. Siwa Oasis is known for its geographical beauty, its hot springs, and the fact that Alexander the Great traveled here to visit the Oracle of Amun. Check out Fatnas Island and take a desert safari while you're here.

Tunis, Tunisia

There are many reasons to visit the capital of Tunisia . In particular, Tunis' ancient medina rivals that of the Moroccan medinas in Marrakech and Fes. The city is also home to one of the best museums in North Africa, the Bardo National Museum. It is housed in a beautiful palace and filled with treasures found at numerous ancient sites throughout Tunisia. While there are many hotels in Tunis, a light rail system makes it very easy to stay in the gorgeous coastal village of Sidi Bou Said , located just 20 minutes away. In between the two are the ancient ruins of Carthage.

Abu Simbel, Egypt

The two temples built for the Pharaoh Ramesses II at Abu Simbel have been attracting visitors since Victorian times. Almost as impressive as the monument itself is the story of its restoration in the 1960s. The temples had to be dismantled and physically moved 185 feet (60 meters) up a cliff where they were reassembled in the exact same relation to each other and the sun. A daily sound and light show should not be missed. You should also check out the Abu Simbel Festival, which takes place twice a year in February and October. Natural sunlight and architectural brilliance combine to light up the inner sanctum.

Atlas Mountains, Morocco

TripSavvy / Chris VR

The Atlas Mountains are a prime destination for trekking, with routes to suit a wide range of capabilities. Jebel Toubkal, situated in the High Atlas Mountains, is North Africa's highest peak at 13,667 feet (4,167 meters). It's a challenging trek to the summit, but worth it for the spectacular views. While you can make it to the summit and back to the town of Imlil in a day, it's recommended that you take at least three days to acclimatize and enjoy the scenery. During the winter months, skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts should head to nearby Oukaïmeden ski resort.

Ras Mohammed National Park, Egypt

The Red Sea offers some of the best scuba diving on the planet. Certified divers can explore Second World War shipwrecks, dive alongside bucket list animals including dolphins and sharks and discover pristine coral reefs. Ras Mohammed National Park is one of the most famous dive destinations in the Red Sea. Located off the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, it's the oldest national park in Egypt. It is renowned for its healthy corals and diverse marine life, with more than 1,000 recorded fish species. Top dive sites include Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef, where gray reef sharks and Napoleon wrasse are often spotted.

Sahara Desert, Tunisia

The Sahara Desert crosses every country in North Africa, but the section that runs through Tunisia is especially full of interesting and accessible sights. There are unique troglodyte dwellings around the Matmata area, which featured in the " Star Wars " movies as homes on the planet of Tatooine. Equally fascinating are the stone forts and fortified granaries built into the desert mountains hundreds of years ago. The fort of Ksar Ouled Soltaine is particularly impressive. Beautiful dunes, salt lakes, and the ability to camp out under the stars at a tented hotel make the Tunisian Sahara a wonderful destination.

Make sure you have the correct travel insurance cover and read up on the latest security warnings before heading out!

What is Libya best known for?

Libya is best known for its controversial former leader, Colonel Gaddafi. He was one of the most powerful and influential people in the world, even after he was overthrown in a violent revolution. His rule over Libya saw major improvements to infrastructure such as healthcare and education system along with numerous other social initiatives. However, his years of autocratic rule were not kind to the environment or Libyan citizens themselves – he is chiefly responsible for extensive damage done to the country’s natural landscapes. This dark chapter of Libya’s history is gradually being overshadowed by various stunning coastal landscapes that make it a wonderful spot for swimming, sunbathing and surfing.

Is Libya safe to visit?

Libya used to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world. However, since Gaddafi lost power and fell from power, the current situation is much improved. Although there are still areas that are off-limits according to your country’s embassy or consulate – make sure you have a solid travel plan before travelling anyway as even these areas can be considered safe nowadays. Most places in Libya are now considered safe but we recommend contacting a travel agent who specializes in Libyantravels for safety tips and advice specifically tailored for this destination.

Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise

This trip was AMAZING!! It exceeded my expectations and was everything I could have asked for. What truly made it special was our guide, Ray! He was so knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. If we needed to get in contact with him, he was always reachable. The overall organization of the trip was very good. I liked how we started in Cairo, traveled down to Aswan and then made our way slowly back to Cairo. It was a lot of traveling and the first few days were a lot but it was totally worth it! My favorite part of the trip was The Valley of the Kings. We were there for a little over 2 hours and I feel like I could have been there for days. It was just so beautiful! I can confidentially say I saw the Best of Egypt! Overall I would recommend this tour & trip to anyone! HUGE shoutout to Ray for everything -- If you are looking to take this tour you should see if he can be your guide!

Absolutely loved this tour! Big shout out to Sohaila & Anas who were both fantastic tour guides. There were a couple of things along the way that could have gone a little better, but they were insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The sites included in the tour are all breath taking and somehow get better and better. I'd highly recommend doing all of the extras, particularly Abu Simbel and the Luxor hot air balloon. Accom was also much better than I had expected and sleeper train wasn't too bad either, surprisingly.

Morocco: Markets & Mountains Tour

Morocco: Markets & Mountains

All the places we visited were great. Morocco is a country with many diverse landscapes, climates, etc. Accomodations were good for an "on a shoestring" tour, with no major problems with any of the hotels. Word of warning: the trip has a lot of winding roads and very long bus ride and much of the bus got motion sickness, so be prepared with appropriate medication if you book this tour. However, the guide and drivers accomodated for frequent breaks during the bus ride for those that got sick. The guide (Abdellah) was knowledgeable about each location, but would sometimes require a bit of prompting to talk about available options for activities to do during free time--a bit more guidance on Marrakech activities would be nice.

The tour was great! I really can’t say enough good things about it. Our guide in Cairo, Nasser, was wonderful, and our guide, Ahmed, in Luxor to Aswan was fantastic. The boat was very cool and the food was top notch. It’s hard to believe we saw so much of Egypt in so short a time. I highly recommend Egypt Direct. Professional and hospitable people. 5 stars!

Morocco Encompassed - 15 Days

Amazing trip that will stay forever with me. Younez, our tour guide was the highlight of this tour. He was genuine and surely loved his job. Everything he did was coming from his heart, he made sure everyone in our group got what we needed and felt comfortable. He gave us tips how to be safe and he was always around for us. I appreciated him very much and his passion on sharing his beautiful country with us. Often Younez took us to visit off beaten tracks and impulsively would take us to a local, traditional souk that we were passing en route, or stop to visit his Berber friend's family taking with him some sugar, biscuits and tea as souvenir. He also bought us oranges from a street vendor, and mandarin when we visited the souk, also traditional sweets when we visit Chefchaouen. We were truly blessed to have Younez as our guide. The tour itself was fantastic with very good pace and route, although some hotels were not so good (broken sink, no ventilation in the bathroom so everything goes to the bedroom), perhaps need to review again some hotels. We had a comfortable bus with our very experience and patient driver Said. Said was funny although he was shy but after some days he showed his funny and friendly side toward all of us. Thank you Nomadic Tours for the amazing trip! Very recommended indeed!!

Budget Tours & Trips to North Africa Reviews

Our guide, Mina, was very knowledgable and helpful when you wanted to find specific things. The accommodations were great, the river cruise was fantastic. Do the trip to Abu Simbal and the Nubian village dinner, it's 100% worth it. It would have been nice to do a tour in Hurghada of the Museum (which is worth the 20 minute walk), the mosque and the church.
Mina was the best tour guide. He was so knowledgeable, fun, kind and so enthusiastic. He always answered any questions we had and was always so willing to help. Couldn’t have had a better guide than Mina. We loved every moment of the trip and our group was amazing as well. Such an amazing trip.
Nicely planned itinerary exploring all the essential highlights of Morocco: beautiful nature, amazing culture and tasty food; and the pacing of the road trips was also very manageable. Our tour guide Mustapha is a true gem in this trip - he answered all our questions, taught us local languages, and even arranged a surprise birthday cake for me! Definitely a trip to remember :)

Middelvlei stands out as one of the few wineries (or wine farms, as they’re called in South Africa) in the region that invites guests to experience firsthand the creative process of winemaking with its wine blending experience. The session begins with a guided tasting, where you'll learn about the nuanced flavors of Pinotage, merlot and shiraz, accompanied by freshly baked potbrood and a delectable snoek pate. Next, you take on the role of wine maker as you blend the varietals to create your very own bottle of personalized wine that you get to take home with you. There’s no better souvenir of Stellenbosch! Don’t leave without grabbing lunch at the winery’s Boerebraai Restaurant, where you’ll be treated to an authentic South African braai (barbeque), including perfectly grilled lamb and sausage, as well as incredibly tasty pumpkin fritters and Braaibroodjies (barbecued cheese and tomato sandwiches).

Weltevreden Estate Winery

This historic boutique winery, renown for its line of bold Bertha wines, offers something for every interest and age range. The most popular experience is the handmade macaron and wine pairing, which allows visitors to indulge in a delightful fusion of flavors. The winery is also home to the exceptional Jonkershuis restaurant, where guests can savor elevated cuisine in a friendly atmosphere. Families with young kids won’t want to miss the Kids Carnival area, providing an entertaining space for children to enjoy while their parents explore the estate’s acclaimed outdoor art collection.

Stellenbosch is best discovered via walking tour so you can see first hand the lovely Cape Dutch ... [+] architecture, art scene and lively street life.

Stellenbosch On Foot

Stellenbosch is not just the name of an acclaimed wine region, it’s also a beautiful city with a fascinating history and vibrant art and food scene. It’s worth spending the time to get to know this bucolic university town and one of the best ways to do so is via a walking tour. Led by knowledgeable guides like Juliana, Stellenbosch on Foot offers a historic tour that gives participants an intimate look at Stellenbosch's stately, oak-lined avenues, interesting historic personalities and iconic Cape Dutch architecture.

As you stroll through the "village of the oaks," your enthusiastic guide shares fascinating stories and insights into one of South Africa’s key historic urban centers. Guides also freely dispense insider advice on the best not-to-be-missed eateries, local shops and picturesque streets during the pleasant promenade. Art-focused walking tours (Stellenbosch is one of the country’s premier art centers and has stunning displays peppered throughout) are also available.

Kayamandi Township Tour

Discover a different side to Stellenbosch as you explore Kayamandi, the second oldest township in the country. The walking tour of Kayamandi, which means "nice home" in Xhosa, is done with a local guide and provides guests with a unique insight into the area’s complex and dynamic history and culture. Highlights include street art, the chance to meet local entrepreneurs and sampling traditional foods. Also considering signing up for the Djembe drumming session.

It may be worth hiring a professional driver to navigate South Africa's most celebrated wine region.

Oswald Tours

When visiting the winelands, it’s important to keep in mind that there is no viable public transportation and renting a car can be difficult for those who want to go on several wine tastings and are not used to driving on the left side of the road. That where Oswald Tours comes in. The company offers affordable and reliable personalized chauffeur services, ensuring that you can enjoy your wine tastings and explore the region in comfort. Their knowledgeable, friendly drivers (like Francois) are equally as skilled at driving safely as they are at providing insightful and engaging commentary about the wine region’s' rich history and culture. The company also offer airport pickups, as well as a variety of pre-set tours like Cape Town and whale watching.

ActionSA’s Worst Roads Tour began on Monday in the political vacuum which is the silence of parties on this vital issue that limits how communities and towns are connected, especially in rural provinces.

Over the course of these days, concluding yesterday, ActionSA visited provincial and municipal roads in communities across the North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. With further visits planned for other provinces, we will now begin the work of developing a comprehensive blueprint to fix South Africa’s road network which will be presented to South Africans before the elections.

The visits, which spanned thousands of kilometres, revealed the shortcomings in South Africa’s municipal and provincial road network. These challenges centred around the following:

A failure to tar gravel roads in sufficient road kilometres over the past 30 years of ANC rule, for example the North West has only 30% of its road network tarred;

Neglect of the repairs and maintenance of the road network to the point of road degradation down to the base layer level of roads necessitated complete reconstruction;

Supply chain appointments of inexperienced or incapable service providers producing delays, budget overspends and (or) inferior delivery standards;

Lack of project management skills and (or) experience in roads departments to manage roads projects to completion to acceptable standards, budgets and deadlines;

The impact of heavy vehicle usage of provincial and municipal road networks arising from the collapse of South Africa’s commercial railway networks.

Fragmented government road infrastructure planning across local, provincial and national tiers of government.

Dysfunctional local and provincial government that require clear and decisive leadership and the placement of such governments under the administration of capable and professional civil servants.

The consequence of these failures, while bad in urban centres, is exponentially worse in peri-urban and rural provinces and has generated a roads backlog that grows continues to grow exponentially beyond the funds budgeted by municipal and provincial governments.

The effect of our road network decline is the disconnection of communities that are interdependent upon one another and the significant damage to vehicles that travel these roads. The costs of these roads are borne on the households of those with private vehicles, the cost of public transport for commuters and the cost of goods and services passed onto all residents in these communities. The frequent crosses on the sides of these roads bear testament to the cost of human life arising from the road network.

Much can be done to improve the condition index of the provincial and municipal road network and, at the heart of the ActionSA blueprint, will be the methods implemented by Herman Mashaba to improve the road network during his tenure as Mayor of Johannesburg. Through reprioritising the funds wasted on the perks and luxuries of government over R2 billion was reprioritised to infrastructure in 2017, resulting in 900km of roads being resurfaced and reconstructed.

ActionSA will focus on the development of a blueprint to fix South Africa’s broken road network for presentation to South Africans prior to these all-important elections. It is evident from the feedback received from the Worst Roads Tour that this issue is of great importance to many South Africans and far greater than has been reflected in the campaigns of other parties.

ActionSA plans to inspire South Africans with the knowledge that these 2024 elections will generate the kind of change, nationally and in the provinces, that will see their road networks being improved through a coordinated and professional programme of renewal.
