What Is a Collapsible Dog Crate ?

Dog traveling with owner

As the name suggests, collapsible dog crates are specifically designed to break down when not in use. Most of these crates fold up into a flat, compact form, making them easy to transport and store. Collapsible crates are ideal if you’re traveling with your dog, and they also come in handy if you only occasionally use a crate for your dog, as you can tuck them away in a closet when they’re not needed.

Dog trainer Leigh Siegfried, owner of Opportunity Barks Dog Behavior & Training , explains that there are other benefits to collapsible dog crates, as well: “They can help maintain a familiar routine/chill space for a dog in a new environment, and they can help confine dog mess, like hair and mud, during transport or after big adventures.”

Collapsible Dog Crate: Buyer’s Guide

Dog traveling with owner at a campsite

As you compare different dog crates, there are several factors you’ll want to keep in mind.

Material: Most collapsible dog crates are made from either metal, plastic, or fabric , and there are benefits to each style. “If your goal is safety or you have a dog that has escaped from traditional crates, go with a plastic collapsible crate,” recommends Siegfried. “Fabric collapsible crates are light, easy to move, and are a great alternative if a dog is already crate trained and not an escape artist.”

Size: For best results, it’s important to select a crate that’s the right size for your dog. To find the proper crate length, measure from your dog’s nose to tail, then add 2 to 4 inches to this measurement. You’ll also want to check the crate’s specifications to ensure your dog is within the recommended weight limit.

Weight: If you’re planning to use a collapsible dog crate for traveling, it’s important to consider the weight of the enclosure. Metal crates tend to be quite heavy—sometimes 20 pounds or more—which can make them challenging to move, even if they do fold flat. Plastic or soft-sided crates are often better-suited for travel purposes, as they’re lighter overall.

Ease of Use: You’ll want to look at how the crate breaks down, especially if you’ll be folding it up regularly. Some designs can be collapsed in just a few seconds with no tools required, while others are a bit more labor-intensive to fold up.

How to Collapse a Dog Crate: Tips and Tricks

The process of collapsing a dog crate will vary depending on its material and overall design. You’ll likely need to close the crate’s doors and zip up its windows (when applicable) and from there, it’s generally a matter of removing or undoing the clips and/or latches that hold the crate together. Once these are removed, the walls of the crate should fold down easily to create a flat form.

Most dog crates can be collapsed without any special tools, but certain designs are easier to fold up than others. For instance, the Diggs Revol crate has a handle on top of the crate that you simply turn to collapse the design, and pop-up crates have flexible frames that collapse in a matter of seconds.

Your car-ride companion. Your travel buddy. Your furry co-pilot. No matter his official road-trip title, your dog loves coming along for the adventure. The Happy Ride® Collapsible Travel Crate will give him a comfy place to ride where he'll be safely contained, not restrained.

This dog travel crate is spacious without taking up the entire back seat. It fills up only one seat, so you'll still have room for human passengers. In this roomy crate, your dog will feel like he's lounging in a screened-in porch rather than a travel kennel. The large mesh front and sides let your dog see everyone inside the car and help keep him from getting too hot or cold. It also gives your dog visibility to look out the car window and lets you easily peek into the back seat to check on him.

Inside the dog travel crate is a pad with a fleece cover to help your pet feel extra cozy in the car. The removable fleece cover is waterproof and machine washable, so you can easily wash away dirty pawprints or other messes. The outer shell of the collapsible crate can also be removed and tossed in the washing machine after extra messy adventures.

You won't have to worry about the travel crate moving when your pet does. Loop the headrest strap over the front seat's headrest and pass the seatbelt through slits on the back of the crate to keep it in place. A layer of fabric hides the seatbelt from your pet, so they won't be tempted to use the seatbelt as a chew toy on a long drive.

This car crate has 2 doors that fully unzip to help you easily get your pet in and out of the car, whether the crate is behind the driver's seat or the passenger's seat. The crate also has 2 storage pockets with a hook and loop closure to keep your dog’s leash, poop bags and treats packed and tidy while on the road. There are 2 drawstring openings, one on each side of the travel crate, so you can reach in to give your dog an extra pet (or treat) without unzipping the door.

When you arrive at your vacation rental, or if you need to make some more space in your car, this portable dog crate easily folds down for convenient storage until you and your dog hit the road again. Your pet deserves to road trip in comfort, safety and style. Trust PetSafe® to keep your pet healthy, safe and happy.

  • Keep your dog from freely roaming around the car while you’re driving
  • Travel crate folds down for easy storage when not in use
  • Roomy travel crate gives your pet plenty of space to get comfy during car rides
  • Mesh front and sides give your pet extra ventilation and visibility

  • Seatbelt is hidden between fabric panels so your pet won’t be tempted to chew on it
  • 2 doors on the crate allow your pet to enter from the driver or passenger sides

  • Leather handle lets you easily carry the travel crate when expanded
  • Includes a cushioned pad inside a removable, waterproof fleece cover
  • Machine washable outer shell and fleece cover, air dry
  • Measures 27 in L x 19 in W x 28 in H when fully expanded to fit most vehicles, may not fit compact vehicles

10 Best Travel Crates for Dogs in 2022

Last updated July 5, 2022 | Follow us on Facebook Here

Packing up the car and taking a road trip with your best (dog) friend can seem like a great idea. But there are a lot of places dogs aren’t allowed, and that’s where a travel crate can come into play, especially if you’re staying in hotels.

I personally have taken 5-6 trips across the United States with two dogs. We’ve used multiple types of crates, starting with the traditional house crate (hard wired metal) and finally settling on a foldable soft crate.

travel dog crate collapsible

Noz2Noz Soft-Krater Indoor and Outdoor Crate

With a great ease of use and ability to be easily cleaned, this water resistant crate is a perfect option. It offers a variety of sizes and is very easy to assemble and use.

travel dog crate collapsible

2Pet Foldable Dog Crate

This crate features a waterproof base and a portion of the proceeds go to a great animal cause. A washable fleece pad is the icing on the cake with this one.

Soft Crate vs. Hard Crate

You could not pay me to take a road trip with a metal crate, with one exception: I was driving a truck and the dog was comfortable or preferred the bed of the truck as opposed to the inside floor. Other than that I’m taking a soft crate every single time.

The primary reason is weight. Lugging in 1, 2, 3 or more hard crates into a hotel room is pure torture, especially if you have large dogs, which means large crates.

It’s true that hard crates are easier to clean up, so if you have an older dog or a younger dog prone to accidents then a hard crate may be worth it, but even then it’s a close call.

Travel Crate

While cars are made for human safety, they are not always the safest for pups, especially because they cannot wear a traditional seat-belt ( although there are dog specific seat-belts and harnesses ) as we can. Some (not all) travel crates make sure that your dog is secure and in the event of a crash, they stay inside the vehicle instead of being ejected.

However, most travel crates are simply meant for hotels or overnight stays where you can’t leave the dog in the room to roam about. We almost never use crates inside cars (occasionally in a truck bed). Instead we’ll set up our soft crates in the hotel room so we can visit a local museum, restaurant, or another attraction where dogs aren’t allowed.

My detailed travel crate setup

For the past several years we’ve used the same two Noz2Noz Soft-Krater without a single issue.

Unfortunately we didn’t start out using soft crates. We started with the traditional metal crates (that way a ton!).

metal-dog-crates-traveling

Our first road trip was about 3 weeks across the U.S. and I will never, ever, ever again use metal crates. Holy cow was that a pain.

Our car is packed exactly the same, except we now use soft crates, which pack down even smaller than the picture below. Once we reach the hotel, if we need to leave the dogs for an excursion or something, we’ll unpack the crates and set them up like below.

soft-dog-crates-hotel

You can see the 2 soft crates setup in the hotel room, and I also left the laptop in the picture because we use a program called iCam that streams the laptop camera to our phone. That way we can check on the dogs while we’re out.

icam-dog-monitoring-with-laptop

The crates break down super quick, and we pack up the following day (or whenever we’re done at that hotel).

We don’t even own the metal crates anymore. We used to keep them around in case we needed to crate them in the house, but now we just use the soft crates for that as well.

Let me know in the comments which option you end up going with!

Nice info … however, never leave your dog unattended in a hotel room. In fact, in most places it’s a policy and in some municipalities, it’s against the law.

Etna Pop-Open Single Door Collapsible Soft-Sided Dog Crate, Black & White, 33 inch review

  • Best on a budget
  • Low price, simple option
  • Well ventilation and lightweight

The Etna Pop-Open Single Door Collapsible Soft-Sided Dog Crate provides a simple pop-up, mesh-sided crate for your dog to rest in.

It’s well-ventilated, cozy, and cute with a paw-print design. This crate has 1 door and is a very lightweight option, making it portable.

I found that this created a lovely den for my small dog to lounge in, particularly while sitting outside. This crate is suitable for small dogs and is a great budget option, as it has an exceptionally low price.

  • Very lightweight, making it easy to carry even for those who have mobility issues or struggle with heavier crates
  • Useful for travel in the car, keeping your dog cool and comfortable
  • Mesh windows provide excellent ventilation as well as allow your dog to see out from all angles, unlike some other crates which restrict their view
  • Some owners really enjoyed the pawprint design on the crate, feeling it was stylish and cute for their dog
  • The pop-up aspect makes the crate very easy to put up and fold away
  • Not suitable for destructive dogs, as the mesh sides provide weak points, and the crate is very lightweight
  • Material is not as sturdy or durable as in other soft crates
  • Easy to tip over if your dog is very playful or moves around a lot while inside their crate
  • Care is needed during assembly as the crate pops up quite quickly

Things to Look for in a Soft Dog Crate

When you’re looking for the best soft dog crate, you should look for the following:

Correct Size for Your Dog

It’s crucial that the crate you choose is the right size for your dog, for their comfort and safety. Your pup should be able to stand up, turn around, and stretch out in their crate, but not walk around freely.

High-Quality Materials

A crate made from high-quality, sturdy materials is more likely to last longer and withstand wear. A lot of soft-sided crates will be made with water-resistant material to stand up to the weather. If you plan on using your crate outdoors, keep an eye out for this.

Number of Doors

Crates will vary from having 1 to 4 doors. Think about where you want to use the crate and how many doors are convenient for you.

Some people may only need 1 entryway. Others may prefer more options if they are using the crate in different settings, for example, fitting it into the car.

Ventilation

It’s vital your dog has enough ventilation when they’re inside the crate. Many soft-sided crates will have mesh windows or doors to allow plenty of airflows, while still keeping out any bugs and keeping your dog contained.

Ease of Storage and Assembly

If your dog isn’t going to be using the crate all the time, soft-sided crates have an advantage because they’re usually very lightweight and portable.

They can typically be folded down and reassembled easily. Look for this in the description if it’s important to you.

Comfort for Your Dog

Of course, you want your best friend to be as comfortable as possible. Soft crates tend to provide a cozy, comfortable cave.

Choosing the right size of crate and picking 1 with good ventilation will be key for comfort.

Many will come with removable soft bottoms for your dog to lie on. It’s always a good idea to check whether a bed or comfortable mat comes with the crate. If not, you can always add 1 of your own.

Crufts Soft Dog Crate is ideal for providing comfort and security. It’s available with multiple doors and is made from lightweight, durable material. The mesh panels in the design provide good ventilation and airflow.

The soft crate kennel is another great soft dog crate to choose from. It comes with a breathable mesh cover and removable bottom for easy cleaning. Plus, it folds flat for storage, making it convenient and versatile.

Easy Cleaning

We all know that dogs can get messy and muddy very quickly. Sometimes they have accidents when they’re traveling. So, of course, you need a crate that’s easy to clean.

Some soft crates will have material that’s easy to wipe down. Others will have removable covers or bases that you can put in the washing machine.

Most soft crates have mesh windows and doors, which allows your dog to see out and watch the world go by.

Soft Crate Vs Wire Crate

Soft crates have many advantages over heavy-duty metal dog crates , including being more comfortable and cozier for your dog.

They tend to be far more lightweight and fold down, making them easy to store and carry. Soft crates don’t make much noise when your dog moves around, while wire crates can be a bit noisy at times.

Soft crates often look more aesthetically pleasing, and many owners prefer them. However, if your dog tends to chew things or try to escape their crate, a soft crate may not be a sensible option (see also ‘ What To Do When Your Dog Chewed Through Crate! ‘). A wire crate provides more security and safety.

If your dog is a puppy, older, or tends to be prone to accidents in their crate, a wire crate may be a more hygienic option.

Wire crates tend to come with removable, plastic bottoms which can easily be cleaned and disinfected. Some people prefer wire crates when traveling in the car, as they can provide additional protection in the event of an accident.

Both types of crates can be very useful for both owner and dog. Choosing which type is best for your dog is a matter of knowing your dog, the purpose of the crate, and personal preference.

Soft Crate Safety Advice

It’s vital you crate train your dog before using a soft crate. There are lots of guides online to help you. Always choose the right size of crate for your pup.

If your dog is prone to destructive chewing, a soft crate may not be safe for them as they’re easily chewed and could cause a choking or blockage hazard.

Are soft dog crates safe?

Yes, soft dog crates are generally safe to use, particularly as a place to sleep and when traveling. However, they won’t give your dog extra protection in the event of a car accident.

How do you clean soft dog crates?

Some soft crates will have detachable covers you can put in the washing machine. Others will have removable bottoms you can wash. Some may wipe down.

Can you crate train with a soft dog crate?

Yes, you can crate train a dog with any crate. However, if you have a puppy or a dog prone to chewing or escaping, a wire crate may be better.

This particularly applies if you plan on leaving your dog alone in its crate often.

Are crates cruel?

No, crates aren’t cruel, provided you crate-train your dog. In fact, crates have many benefits for both the dog and the owner.

A soft crate can be a welcoming, cozy space for your pup. Choosing the right crate can help your dog to feel more secure , keep them safer, and allow them to enjoy adventures with you.

Travel dog crate (dog carrier). Your pup needs a place to call all its own. You need a kennel that’s durable, convenient, easy to assemble, and easy to clean. Make the day for both of you with an inventively designed kennel. It sets up in just minutes, and unlike basic kennels, the built-in handles and removable locking wheels make it a cinch to move – very handy for your jet-setting pet or spending a weekend with a dog sitter. The locking metal door is extra sturdy, with water dishes that attach securely to the gate. And the sturdy plastic construction cleans easily.

  • Primary Material: Plastic

My 4 month old Belgian Malinois has been growing fast so after comparing a few crates I decided on this one and I'm really glad I did. At 30" high X 39.5" long it's roomy enough for my long dog who is growing taller by the week, it was easy to assemble, and I really like the fact that the nuts and bolts were made of metal rather than plastic as other similar designs have in theirs. I like that it has wheels too so that it could easily be pushed wherever you want to move it. The only things that the manufacturer could improve upon that I could see are 1) the two bowls for food and water (which should be metal to prevent a dog from chewing and ingesting the plastic, and 2) the weigh/thickness of the bottom could be increased, as I notice that it bows somewhat and the crate rocks back and forth when the dog moves around in it.. I like the sturdiness of the crate. Easy to assemble and fold up. Dnt like the plastic tray. Locks on top of cage broke the first day. Had to repair with screws. Other than that I am satisfied with the cage.. Anonymous. . 2023-04-24 15:15:03

The shipping was really fast although I hadn’t received our new puppy yet. After only a day of puppy discoveries, she has made this a safe zone and sleep zone for daytime naps. She walks in to the full open crate on her own and with the top open she can look up. We are taking puppy on a road trip and will bring this since it closes to store with wheels and a handle to bring to her next stop. I would recommend this to puppy owners and full grown pups as well. Sides are well built so she will grow into this. I purchased the small in chocolate. Marlene. PERDIDO BEACH, AL. 2021-08-31 09:36:54

Not the easiest thing to put together the package was very heavy. Quality good however there were two screws that I needed help with because the holes wouldn’t line up. I bought two and I’m complaining sending the other one back! Wayfair will not give you a price adjustment unless you return. How to prepare a cat for flying

The 4 best airline-approved cat carriers of 2024, tested and reviewed.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Air travel with a cat is stressful, but one of the best airline-approved cat carriers can make it easier. When a cat is flying at your feet in the plane cabin, a durable soft-sided carrier with some key features will ensure your pet's comfort and safety, and your peace of mind.

To select the best carriers for flying with a cat, we spoke with a veterinarian and pet travel experts and tested 24 different airline-friendly pet carriers. Our top pick, the Sleepypod Air , is as durable as it is comfortable for pets and humans alike. If you're looking for a more affordable airline cat carrier, the simple Frisco Premium Airline Compliant Quilted Carrier Bag will keep your kitty comfortable from the beginning to the end of your journey.

Keep in mind that carrier size requirements vary by airline. Delta , American Airlines , and United allow pet carriers up to 18 inches (L) by 11 inches (W) by 11 inches (H). Some airlines have smaller maximum sizes, so make sure to check the airline's website before embarking with your pet.

Our cat testers weren't shy about expressing their clear preference for the Sleepypod Air. During a recent trip to the vet, they both piled into the carrier, opting for its cozy sanctuary over their other carrier. The Sleepypod Air's plush bedding, just-right ventilation, and spacious interior proved calming and comfortable. For skittish fliers, the carrier includes a privacy screen you can slide through the mesh top, though this significantly reduces your cat's access to fresh air.

The carrier stands out for its innovative design and commitment to pet safety — it's certified by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that researches and crash-tests pet carriers to ensure their safety. Rather than doors, it features one continuous zipper that runs end to end. With one pull of the zipper, the carrier transforms into an open bed, converts into a car seat, or rolls up for convenient storage. It's also designed to fold in approximately 2.5 inches at each end, meeting the size requirements of most major airlines. We recommend practicing compressing the bag before your trip.

The padded cross-body shoulder strap felt supportive, and the carrier rested comfortably against the body without collapsing inward. With the luggage strap, the carrier easily stayed balanced on a suitcase when rolling over curbs and rough sidewalks.

The Sleepypod Air isn't cheap. However, given its versatility, comfort, and impressive safety features, we believe it's well worth the investment. You can return it, used or unused, within a year, and Sleepypod guarantees a replacement if it's damaged in an auto accident.

Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Carrier unzips to almost double in size, providing a cat with extra room on long travel days.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Expandable compartment for more space
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Secure luggage strap

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Washable interior bed
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Easy to store
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Limited pocket space
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Expandable section can't be used in flight
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. No warranty

On long travel days with time spent in airports, Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Carrier offers jet-setting cats extra space to stretch out. It includes a zippered panel on its right side that unfolds into a mesh atrium that nearly doubles the carrier's interior space. While the expandable section can't be used in flight, this feature makes it the best airline-approved cat carrier for cross-country flights with layovers and extended stays away from home.

The spacious carrier is front- and top-loading with a roll-up privacy flap over the top door, and it offers plenty of ventilation to keep a cat from overheating. Inside, there is a soft plush bolster bed and safety tether. Outside, it has an adjustable padded shoulder strap and a faux leather carry handle. There is one 10-inch by 4-inch mesh pocket on the backside.

With sturdy mesh screens and smooth zippers, Mr. Peanut's carrier excelled in our testing. It was easy to spot clean, and although the bed is labeled hand-wash only, it came out of the washing machine looking nearly new after air-drying.

When we tested the luggage strap, the carrier remained mostly balanced on our suitcase, slipping only about an inch to one side. Carrying it on the shoulder was comfortable, and the strap was easy to adjust to the correct length.

The Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier stands out for its eye-catching design that prioritizes safety in the air and at your destination, all without compromising on convenience or comfort.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Multiple pockets
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Side panel opening for easy access
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Offers the least ventilation of the carriers tested
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Interior mat is spot-clean only

The Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier not only looks great but also prioritizes safety. Like the Sleepypod Air, it is crash-test certified by the CPS . It also has an interior safety tether and a zipper-locking mechanism to prevent unintentional openings during transit.

The cushy interior mat provides maximum comfort for your kitty copilot while the padded cross-body and secure luggage straps ensure that your precious cargo has a smooth journey from point A to point B. We also appreciate the thoughtful conveniences for human travelers, including three pockets for storing your or your cat's belongings, including a large 16-inch by 6-inch front zipper pocket. There's a D-ring to clip your keys too.

In case of accidents, the carrier comes with one custom-fitted pee pad (more sold separately) that you can access via a side panel to minimize disturbing your pet. The nylon fabric carrier has a moisture-resistant quality that causes liquids to bead up on contact, so bigger messes won't readily adhere. However, the mat has a bolstered edge where gunk can get stuck, so you'll want to thoroughly spot-clean the interior cushion once you reach your destination.

Despite the carrier's 20-inch length, each side compresses by an inch, ensuring it meets most in-cabin airline regulations. Despite the carrier's 20-inch length, each side compresses by an inch, ensuring it meets most in-cabin airline regulations. The width of the carrier also exceeds airline regulations by a half inch but as long as you don't overstuff the side pocket, it can compress.

This Frisco cat carrier is a cozy and budget-friendly option that holds up well to wear and tear.

  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Two loading doors
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Velcro-secured pocket
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Holds large cats
  • Check mark icon A check mark. It indicates a confirmation of your intended interaction. Comes with ID tags and collapsible travel dish
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Shoulder strap lacks padding
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Luggage strap not as secure as other carriers
  • con icon Two crossed lines that form an 'X'. Only one color option

Although this carrier is a fraction of the price of our other picks, it still performed well in durability testing. At home, it was also the carrier our tester cats consistently chose to lounge in time and time again. Simply put, the cozy Frisco Premium Airline Compliant Quilted Carrier Bag is an excellent budget airline cat carrier.

Susan Nilson , a cat and dog trainer and behavior specialist, recommends leaving a carrier with the doors open at home so your cat can get accustomed to it before travel. We did just that, and the carrier quickly became one of our cats' favorite spots to nap. Even after machine washing the interior fleece mat, it didn't lose its softness or cat appeal.

The carrier has two doors, top and side, and two storage pockets: a secure Velcro pocket to stash your keys and phone and a mesh pocket to keep your cat's treats and travel documents easily accessible. The included collapsible silicone bowl and ID tag ticks two essentials off your packing list.

The adjustable shoulder strap and carry handle lack padding and may become uncomfortable on longer journeys. Similar to pricier options, the Frisco carrier includes a luggage strap designed to attach the carrier to the telescopic handle of your suitcase. However, the strap doesn't keep the carrier well-balanced on curbs and sidewalks, so you'll want to have a free hand for added support.

What to look for in an airline cat carrier

Cat carriers come in many different styles at varying price points. To ensure you get the best value for safety and comfort, our experts recommend considering the following factors when shopping.

Safety: Unlike child car seats, there are no universal safety standards or inspections for cat carriers. However, some brands go the extra mile by subjecting their carriers to rigorous testing by reputable third-party or nonprofit safety organizations. Among our recommended picks, the Sleepypod Air and Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier have been crash-test certified by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization that studies the safety of pet products.

Currently, CPS studies do not extend to air travel and flight safety. Despite the absence of standardized air travel safety tests, crash-test certification remains the gold standard. As Lindsey Wolko, founder and CEO of CPS, points out, you'll want to consider your entire journey, including driving from your home to the airport and transportation at your destination.

Wolko says carriers are most susceptible to failure at seams where the mesh connects to the carrier body. She recommends inspecting carriers for any signs of loose threads, weak spots, or faulty zippers to ensure their overall safety and reliability throughout transit.

Size: A carrier should be roomy enough for your cat to comfortably turn around and lie down while still being compact enough to fit under the seat in front of you. Carrier size requirements vary by airline, so double-check your airline's specific requirements.

Fortunately, size isn't usually a limiting factor for cats. More often than not, they prefer to curl up in a small ball and hide during the trip, says Dr. Jo Myers , a veterinarian with Vetster. She says extra room for playing, eating, drinking, or using the litter box during the flight is typically unnecessary. However, if you anticipate a long layover and want extra legroom for your cat, an expandable carrier like Mr. Peanut's Gold Series Expandable Carrier is a good choice.

Weight restrictions: Many in-cabin cat carriers are suitable for cats weighing up to 15 or 18 pounds. If your cat is on the heavier side, double-check the weight limit for the carrier you're considering purchasing and make sure your cat has room to comfortably move around in the carrier.

Ventilation: Most carriers are designed with enough ventilation (at least 16%) to meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) minimum requirement . Some carriers may have less or more, so the amount of ventilation you choose depends on you and your cat's preferences.

Since Myers says most cats prefer to hide in stressful environments, carriers with privacy walls and flaps may be beneficial. Alternatively, she recommends bringing a towel or blanket that you can place over the carrier if your cat becomes stressed. "Even if you cover the carrier with a towel, it's far from airtight," she says. "Simply check on your cat occasionally, without disturbing them any more than necessary."

How we tested airline-approved pet carriers

We developed our selection and testing criteria for this guide to the best airline-approved cat carriers with advice from our experts. The 24 carriers we evaluated underwent the tests described here.

Feature comparison: After conducting interviews with our experts, we created a point rubric for scoring each carrier based on the following features:

  • Shape and design
  • Interior mat
  • Loading doors
  • Carrying straps and handles
  • Ventilation
  • Privacy flaps
  • Interior safety tether
  • Luggage strap
  • Dimensions and in-cabin airline capability
  • Safety certifications
  • Ease of storage

Scrape test: We scraped a mesh section of each carrier 50 times with a fork to test its durability, noting any damage or discoloration.

Zip test: To test the durability of each carrier's zippers, we completely zipped and unzipped one of its loading entrances 50 times. In the process, we observed changes in the zipper's ability to smoothly run its course.

Luggage test: If a carrier included a luggage strap, we evaluated how well it remained balanced on top of a suitcase. We placed a 10-pound weight inside and attached the carrier to a suitcase handle so it rested on top of our luggage. Then we rolled it over a curb, up a ramp, and along the sidewalk and street of a city block.

Ventilation test: According to Wolko, ventilation is important to prevent a cat from overheating during travel. We measured the dimensions of each carrier's mesh panels and calculated the percentage of the total surface area they comprised. We favored bags with more ventilation. According to IATA live animal regulations, pet carrier bags must have a minimum of 16% ventilation.

Walk test: We took each soft-sided carrier containing a 10-pound weight on a 15-minute walk around a neighborhood. Each was carried using the shoulder strap and held at the front of the body the way a person would if they had a real cat inside. For the last block of the walk, we switched to using the hand-carry straps. The backpack carriers were taken on the same walk but were not carried by hand. With each one, we paid attention to how comfortable it was to carry, how much it bounced, and whether it collapsed inwards.

Goop test: We devised this test to determine how easy it would be to clean the carriers if a cat vomited or defecated in transit. We mashed together cat kibble, canned food, and water with a mortar and pestle to make the goop, then spread a tablespoon on an exterior wall and interior mat of each carrier. After 48 hours, we wiped the goop from the exterior using dish soap and water and cleaned the mats in the washing machine.

Drop and stomp tests: We brought the carriers to a local park, loaded each one with a 10-pound weight, and threw them off of a 10-foot play structure, looking for any damage that occurred upon landing. We then rolled the bags several times on the ground with the weight still inside, looking for damage to the stitching, mesh, or zippers. Later, at home, we placed each carrier on a rug and stomped on it a dozen times with bare feet, noting whether its frame changed shape or the bag suffered any other damage.

Airline cat carrier FAQs

What is considered an airline-approved pet carrier.

To fly with a cat in the cabin of a plane, you'll need a soft-sided carrier that fits within the allowable dimensions of the airline, which vary a little from airline to airline. Regardless of the carrier you use, Wolko says to make sure your cat has enough room to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Additionally, there should be at least 2 to 3 inches of clearance from the top of their ears to the interior roof of the carrier.

How much does it cost to fly with a cat?

Fees for flying with a pet in the cabin of a plane vary between carriers. At United Airlines , a one-way flight for your cat adds $125 to your ticket price. At Delta , there is a $95 fee for domestic flights. Flying a cat in the cargo hold on a domestic flight is typically about $300 per trip. Sending a cat on an international flight can cost up to triple that amount.

How much ventilation should a carrier have?

For soft-sided carriers, Wolko says mesh ventilation should be on at least three sides of the bag. In cargo, airlines require that a kennel is ventilated on all four sides. According to the IATA live animal regulations, both soft- and hard-sided pet carriers must have a minimum of 16% ventilation.

Do cats need to go to the bathroom on a flight?

Unless a cat has a medical condition, they will be fine without access to a litter box for the duration of a flight. "Just based on the physiology of cats, they could probably go from Boston to Hawaii without needing to void," says Dr. Bob Murtaugh , a veterinarian and chair of veterinary medicine for the National Academies of Practice.

In the cargo hold, kennels cannot be outfitted with a litter box or anything other than an absorbent liner and a soft bed or blanket. "If the travel day will be more than eight hours, during a layover pet owners can arrange a comfort stop for cats to be let out of their carrier," says Elaine Mathis, pet travel specialist and project manager at Happy Tails Travel . When you let your cat out of their carrier, you'll want to make sure your cat is safely secured with one of the best cat harnesses attached to a leash.

Do cats need food and water on a flight?

On shorter in-cabin flights, it's unlikely your cat will require food or water. However, if you're flying your cat in cargo, Mathis says a food bowl and water bowl should be in the carrier regardless of the flight length. She recommends using dishes that fasten to the crate's door and can be refilled easily from the outside, such as Lixit's Quick Lock Crock 10-ounce bowls .

What are the signs that my cat may be in distress in flight?

According to Murtaugh, a few obvious signs may indicate your cat is in distress during a flight, either due to fear or excessive heat. A cat that is panting, restless, and vocalizing could be experiencing significant anxiety or overheating. If the membranes in their gums turn bright red, the latter is most likely, and it's important to cool them off quickly. If a flight attendant approves, placing the carrier on your lap so they can feel the air blowing from the vent above your seat or wiping them down with a wet cloth may help lower their body temperature. Before your travel, Nilson recommends lightly spraying the carrier with calming pheromones.

In the weeks before their trip, introduce your cat to their carrier or kennel in a positive way. "Make the carrier feel like a cave or a home or something that's comfortable, something that they're not just jammed into the first time they're on their way to the airport," says Murtaugh.

Place the carrier in an area of the home where your cat spends a lot of time and encourage them to explore it by placing catnip and treats inside or by playing with them in and around the space.

Murtaugh says that taking your cat on a car ride or other forms of transportation while in their carrier may also be helpful in the weeks before the flight. He recommends placing a bed or blanket that smells like home inside the carrier and using a pheromone spray or collar to help take the edge off.

If your cat has a history of experiencing debilitating stress during travel and will be flying in the cabin, you can speak to your vet about prescribing an anxiety-relieving medication. However, it's important to test medication out before your flight. "Make sure there won't be any untoward side effects," says Murtaugh. "Your vet can help you tailor that to your cat's needs."

The IATA recommends against sedating a cat before flying in the cargo hold. It can be fatal for older, chronically sick, or highly stressed animals. Nilson says calming pheromones such as Feliway or Pet Remedy are safe alternatives.

Packard series

Packard Motor Car Company was an American luxury automobile company. It was founded in Warren Ohio as the Ohio Automobile Company by James Ward Packard, his brother William, and their partner, George Lewis Weiss. The first car rolled out of the factory on November 6, 1899.

Packard’s cars were considered the preeminent luxury car before World War II, and owning a Packard was prestigious. Henry Bourne Joy, a member of one of Detroit's oldest and wealthiest families, bought a Packard. Impressed by its reliability, he brought together a group of investors to refinance the company, soon after which Packard moved its operations to Detroit.

In 1953 (or 1954, depending on your source), Packard bought rival Studebaker and formed the Studebaker-Packard Corporation of South Bend, Indiana. Some historians believe that this was the beginning of the end of the company. It was certainly followed by a series of circumstances and events that ultimately led to the end of the company in 1962.

This series of photographs was taken at America’s Packard Museum in Dayton, Ohio. The Museum is a restored Packard dealership transformed into a museum that displays twentieth-century classic Packards and historic Packard artifacts and memorabilia.

The dealership originally sold Packards in Dayton, Ohio beginning in 1908. It moved into the building that is now home to the museum in 1917. Robert Signom II, the museum's Founder and Curator for 27 years, acquired the building in 1991 and painstakingly rehabilitated it to its original Art Deco grandeur, opening the museum in 1992.

Car Collector magazine named the museum one of the top ten automotive museums in the United States. The cars on display range from 1900s Brass Era cars, the streamlined Classic cars of the 1930s and 1940s, to the modern Packards of the 1950s. The museum also has a collection of war machines, parts, accessories, and original sales and service literature.

The awesome curator of The White Canvas Gallery and my dear friend, Goodcross, created this challenge.

The White Canvas Gallery presents an open challenge to enable you to stand united for peace. Lets disown the mindless violence around us and lets DO something about it as artists.

My Nominees: Josie Elderslie, Gaus, Miuccia Klaar, Lo Coeur, and Sun - have fun!

The Curator of the Arcane is as all curators of their sections, far more important than the librarian. They are the ones doing the actual work sorting out the chaos of The Grand Library. Seen here sorting the pages from the formula of the philosopher's stone. The alchemical substance capable of turning base metals in to gold.

Utilizing creativity, innovation, light and discovery, Ontario creators from all artistic streams will showcase their exhibits following the curatorial theme of “Cocoon“.

What if we could build a respite where we could protect ourselves, but still have to ability to come and go as needed? Eye and Mind is a semi sheltered alcove that protects against the winds of the open grounds of Ontario Place while remaining open; sharing the light it has to offer.

Museums - The British Museum

The British Museum was founded as a ‘Universal Museum’. Its beginnings are bequeathed from the will of Sir John Sloane. He amassed 71,000 items, manuscripts, books and many natural history items. He has a statue in the London Physic Garden, Chelsea.

In 1753 King George II gave his Royal Assent to build the Museum, the body of trustees chose Montagu House for its location. This was purchased from the family for £20,000. Ironically Buckingham Palace was rejected as being too expensive and the location, unsuitable.

The first exhibition for scholars was opened in January 1759. In those early days, the Library took up the whole of the ground floor, the first floor a large part was taken up by the Natural History collection.

In 1763 the Natural History collection was reclassified using the Linnaean System, after Carl Linnaeus, famous Swedish botanist. This made the Museum a centre of learning for European natural history scholars.

In the oncoming years there were many new additions particularly in the Library, David Garrick plays (approx. 1000) were one example but it wasn’t until 1772 when the first real quantities of antiques were purchased. This was the collection of Greek vases from Sir William Hamilton. More items came into the Museum. In 1778 objects from Capt. Cooks round-the-world voyages were brought back and donated. By the early 1800’s it was clear that further growth was not possible, furthermore there were signs of decrepitude and overcrowding.

In 1802 a building committee was set up. The upshot was that the Old Montague House was demolished and work began on the new building in 1823. It’s original intention was for a Library and Picture Gallery but this was changed because another new gallery was commissioned in 1824 (The National Gallery). So this building now housed the Natural History collection, the building work was completed in 1831.

Whilst this building work was going on items still came into the museum. In 1802 King George presented the Museum with the Rosetta Stone, (this was the key that opened the lock to deciphering hieroglyphs). In this period from 1802 – 1820 there were many gifts and purchases of Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Assyrian and Babylonian sculpture.

Because of the overwhelming number of objects coming into the museum, it was decided to move the whole of the natural history collection to The Natural History Museum in Kensington. In 1847 over 20,000 books were bequeathed by Sir Thomas Grenville (former trustee). These arrived in horse-draws carts, all 20 of them.

From 1840 – 1900 there were many new sources of objects coming into the Museum. Partial Tombs from ancient Lycia, more Assyrian artefacts from excavations, a valuable collection of antiquities belonging to the Duke of Blacas, (this collection the French government at the time refused to buy so instead it was sold to the Museum for FFr1.2m in 1867). In 1881 came a collection of armour, from William Burges and in 1897 another bequest, this time of Finger rings, drinking vessels, porcelain, Japanese inro and netsuke from A. W. Franks, curator and collector.

More pressure for room for the ever expanding collection culminated in the purchase of 69 surrounding houses. The first stage of construction began in 1906.

Over the years there have been many changes to the internal rooms in the museum itself. The Classical and Near East, The Duveen Gallery which was destroyed during WWII, now bought back to its best.

Notable additions to the museum include in 1939 ‘The Sutton Hoo’ treasures from the Anglo Saxon burial ship. In 1972 The Tutankhamun Treasures exhibition attracted over 1.6 million people. Also in that year Parliament passed a resolution to establish a British Library. This was a real necessity as 1.25 miles of new shelving was needed to house the books coming into the Museum on a yearly basis. However it wasn’t until 1997 that the books actually left. Redevelopment of the space took place and was opened in 2000 as the ‘Queen Elizabeth II Great Court’.

From those original days of 1753, the British Museum has 13 million items, The natural History Museum 70 million and the British Library has 150 million. An impressive collection of items. I have merely scratched the surface. Definitely worth the visit and don’t forget, it’s F R E E.

The Mapmaker’s Song

The mapmaker downed his tools.

I’ve caught it, every alley, every street,

every fanlight and window-ledge,

the city fixed and framed.

Now I want everything else.

I want to be a historian of footsteps,

a cartographer of hemlines and eyelids,

I want to catch what the pavements say

when they sing to each other

in their deep laboratories, plotting

every journey since the place began.

I want the whole

unlosable database, the repeating place,

kings stalking the server farms,

tailbacks and looped alarms,

I want to be where

brushstrokes flicker on a bank of screens,

where graveyards tilt

and quiet populations crowd the air,

their quarters risen again

their furniture

smashing through the floors.

I want to stand at the centre

of a great clutter

mapping ashes, mapping bones,

archivist, enumerator, hanger-on

signing the returns

of an infinite census.

I want to be,

beyond everything I’ve reached or drawn,

not much at all, or all there is,

a geographer of breath,

a curator of hands.

I want to lie in the atrium

of the museum of the fingertip

and touch, touch, touch.

Edison Washington

Always great to have Shell the creative curator on set. Her attention to detail is unmatched! She makes every shoot better. I must also say, Shell is funny, she will make you laugh!

I met Cait at FiveMyles in Prospect Heights Brooklyn, where she curated a few exhibits during the summer. We talked about her work, and her Pink Floyd tee-shirt, as her dog who was also in the gallery plopped herself right at my feet, supposedly she does that when she likes people--every time I moved she would also--and prop herself at my feet again & again.

Rencontres d'Arles

The Rencontres d’Arles (formerly called Rencontres internationales de la photographie d’Arles) is an annual summer photography festival founded in 1970 by the Arles photographer Lucien Clergue, the writer Michel Tournier and the historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette.

The Rencontres d’Arles has an international impact by showing material that has never been seen by the public before. In 2015, the festival welcomed 93,000 visitors.

The specially designed exhibitions, often organised in collaboration with French and foreign museums and institutions, take place in various historic sites. Some venues, such as 12th-century chapels or 19th-century industrial buildings, are open to the public throughout the festival.

The Rencontres d’Arles has revealed many photographers, confirming its significance as a springboard for photography and contemporary creativity.

In recent years the Rencontres d’Arles has invited many guest curators and entrusted some of its programming to such figures as Martin Parr in 2004, Raymond Depardon in 2006 and the Arles-born fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

The festival

A photography exhibition, Rencontres d'Arles, 2010

Opening week at the Rencontres d’Arles features photography-focused events (projections at night, exhibition tours, panel discussions, symposia, parties, book signings, etc.) in the town’s historic venues, some of which are only open to the public during the festival. Memorable events in recent years include Europe Night (2008), an overview of European photography; Christian Lacroix’s fashion show for the festival’s closing (2008); and Patti Smith’s concert for the Vu agency’s 20th anniversary (2006).

Nights at the Roman Theatre

At night, work by a photographer or a photography expert is projected in the town’s open-air Roman theatre accompanied by concerts and performances. Each event is a one-off creation. In 2009, 8,500 people attended evenings at the Roman theatre, an average of 2,000 a night, and 2,500 were there on closing night, when the Tiger Lilies played during a projection of Nan Goldin’s “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency”. In 2013 over 6,000 people attended the nighttime photography projections, an average of approximately 1,000 each night.

The Night of the Year

The Night of the Year, which was created in 2006, allows visitors to walk around and see the festival’s favourite works by artists and photographers as well as carte blanche exhibitions by institutions.

Cosmos-Arles Books

Cosmos-Arles Books is a Rencontres d’Arles satellite event dedicated to new publishing practices.

Over the past 15 years large-scale photographic publications, self-published books, and ebooks have become essential media for experimentation by photographers and artists. They allow photography to be rediscovered as a means of expression and distribution, providing a rich terrain of expression for the art’s fundamentally hybrid forms.

Symposia and panel discussions

Photographers and professionals participating in symposia and panel discussions during opening week discuss their work or issues raised by the images on display. In recent years the themes included whether a black-and-white aesthetic is still conceivable in photography (2013); the impact of social networks on creativity and information (2011); breaking with past, a key idea for photography today (2009); photography commissions: freedom or constraint (2008); challenges and changes in the photography market (2007).

The Rencontres d’Arles awards

Since 2002 the Rencontres d’Arles awards have been an opportunity to discover new talents. In 2007 the number of annual awards was reduced to three, presented at the closing ceremony of the festival’s professional week: the Discovery Award (€25,000), Author’s Book Award (€8,000) and History Book Award (€8,000).

Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award

In 2015 the Rencontres d’Arles offered an award to assist with the publication of a dummy book. Endowed with a €25,000 budget production budget, this new prize is open to all photographers and artists using photography who submit a dummy book that has never been published.

The winner’s book will be produced in autumn 2015 and be presented at the 2016 Rencontres d’Arles.

Photo Folio Review & Gallery

Since 2006 aspiring photographers have been able to submit their portfolios to international photography experts in various fields, including publishers, exhibition curators, heads of institutions, agency directors, gallery owners, collectors, critics and photo editors, for appraisal during the festival’s opening week. Photo Folio Review & Gallery offers them an opportunity to show their work throughout the festival.

Photography classes

The Rencontres d’Arles has always been a place where professional photographers and practitioners on every level have been able to meet each other and exchange ideas. Each year, photography class participants undertake a personal journey of creation through photography’s aesthetic, ethical and technological issues. Leading photographers such as Guy le Querrec, Antoine d’Agata, Martin Parr, René Burri and Joan Fontcuberta regularly teach at the Rencontres d’Arles.

Rentrée en Images

“Rentrée en Images” has been a key part of the festival’s educational activities since 2004. During the first two weeks in September, special mediators take students from the primary to graduate school level on guided tours of the exhibitions. Based on the festival’s programming, the event aims to introduce young people to the visual arts and fits in with a wider policy of cultural democratisation. “Rentrée en Images” reaches thousands of students, and for many of them it is their first exposure to contemporary art.

Public funding accounted for 40% of the 2015 festival’s €6.3-million budget, sales (mainly of tickets and derivative products), 40% and private partnerships, 20%[clarification needed][citation needed].

CRESCENT MOON by Adwehe, the February 2022 exhibition @ Nitroglobus

Months ago, after I admired an installation of Adwehe in another gallery, I asked her to create something for Nitroglobus. She said yes and wow what an impressive installation she made 'CRESCENT MOON', consisting of 2D images, 3D sculptures and of course one of her absolute specialisms LIGHT.

I hope you will enjoy this installation under the crescent moon WindLight as much as I do.

Special thanks goes to David Silence for creating another great poster, based on a work of Adwehe.

Opening party: Monday 14 February (Valentines day)

Time: 12 PM SLT (is 21 hrs Amsterdam time)

Valentine particles show by Venus Adored & Kurk Mumfuzz

Tunes by DJ hEIN

Dresscode: coz it's Valentines day we highly appreciate when you come dressed in PINK or RED.

CRESCENT MOON by Adwehe:

The moon has a mysterious attraction and influence on living beings and on many other things.. As the moon makes its way around the earth, its light, a reflection of the sun, marks shapes differently than how they really are: they get distorted.

In the virtual world of SL we are literally beings made of light, we might be gods, yet are we? The light of the moon is the indirect sunlight, and we the avatars are indirectly our human selves wrapped up in our own virtual creations.

Working towards this exhibition has been a journey exploring a mix between photography and painting, the real and the virtual, bringing out changing moods in strong colors. A play with the elements in a virtual environment.
