After a recent two-week trip to Australia, I came back with a better idea of what I needed to pack—and what I didn’t. Your own Australia packing list will vary depending on how long you’re going, which part of this diverse country you’re visiting, and what time of year you’re traveling, but the following list of what to pack for Australia will give you a good start.

What to Pack for Australia: The Suitcase

Neck pillow : Bring the most comfortable option you have to catch some shuteye on the long flight to Oz.

Comfortable walking shoes : Whether that means sneakers or slip-on loafers, comfortable walking shoes should be at the top of your Australia packing list.
Hiking shoes : If you’ll be spending much time exploring Australia’s many national parks and wilderness trails, you’ll want sturdy hiking shoes with good traction.
Flip-flops : These are a must if you’re planning any beach time during your Australia vacation.

Windbreaker or lightweight rain jacket : If you visit during the warmer months, you might not need much of a jacket at all for your trip to Australia, but it’s always a good idea to bring a lightweight option to protect yourself from rain or a chilly nighttime breeze.

Australian cultural is pretty informal, so you won’t need to dress up much for dinner. Leave your fancy clothes at home unless you’re traveling to Oz for a wedding or other formal occasion.

Packing Cubes For Australia – Wandrd Packing Cubes

In case you have never used them, packing cubes are little compression cubes that allow you to neatly pack clothes in in order to help facilitate better packing. They allow you to pack more stuff, and to keep it all better organised.

For the longest time, I thought that packing cubes were a superfluous indulgence, but boy was I wrong. Now I never travel without a few. These ones from WANDRD are great quality and excellent value for money. Get them on your Australia packing list now!

The good news about Australia is that there is extensive 4g and 5g Internet coverage offering ready access to taxi apps and food delivery apps. The bad news is that your native SIM card will most probably not work and so you will not be able to access any of this online goodness until you rectify that particular situation.

You can waste time hanging around phone shops queuing to get a plastic sim or you can simply install a eSim onto your phone before you leave home. You just access the HolaFly site, choose the relevant package, download it and off you go – you are online the moment you land at the airport. eSims are easier to set up and better than the environment than plastic sims. The downside is that not all phones are eSim ready.

Best Travel Towel For Australia – Matador Packable Towel

Towels are essential backpacking gear as a lot of hostels don’t provide them or if they do, they may not really be all that clean. However don’t bring a ‘normal’ towel on your backpacking journeys, they are big and take up loads of room in your pack and they take ages to dry.

Travel pros like use micro-fibre dry towels that roll up into tiny, space saving proportions AND they dry unbelievably quick. Granted, they are not quite as comforting as a cotton towel but its a trade of that travellers need to make. A good micro-fibre travel towers is essential travel gear on any ultimate backpacking gear list.

Whilst the climate does vary across Australia and with the seasons, it is generally a warm country. Summer’s are VERY hot and even the Melbourne winters can be survived comfortably with nothing more than a jacket.

That said, there are some mountainous regions and these can get chilly and icy in winter – do you research before you head out. Oh and remember that if you are visiting Australia in December, that is summer in Oz and June is winter!

We are going to tell you how to dress in Australia (but a hat with corks dangling from it would be fetching), instead our list will suggest some useful travel goodies.

Most Auzzies I met in Europe and South America seemed to live in flip-flops (or thongs). However, that does not mean that this is suitable footwear for wearing down under. Your trip to Oz will probably involve a lot of walking and general adventure-stuff. Good shoes are a must.

I admit that most shoes that are also good for hiking are not the most attractive pieces of footwear. But they are some of the most comfortable and deliver good ankle support for a long day of going walkabout on your Australia adventure .

If you intend on doing any hiking or camping, then you shall need a daypack. They are great for carrying water, and clothes and for packing sandwiches for lunch. We love Osprey products and this daypack is our personal pick.

The Osprey Daylite Plus has a mesh-covered panel to keep your back cool and fresh by minimizing contact with the back of the pack itself and allowing air to get between you and the pack.

Travel First Aid Kit

You don’t need to tote around half a pharmacy, but a well-stocked first aid kit should be in all our backpacks. Stuff happens on the road and it’s inconvenient and embarrassing when you can’t manage small situations like a cut finger or hangover migraine.

You can tuck this lifesaver away in a forgotten pocket – and it’ll be there when you need it.

Tip: Add a few bits and pieces to the first aid kit after you purchase it, like extra headache medicine, any personal meds you need (like allergy pills), whatever you take to calm your stomach and a few more plasters.

Circling back to the footwear question, now we are going to talk about sandals. Whilst you do need good shoes for all that adventure stuff, a good pair of Jandals is perfect for the beach, for hanging out in the hostel and even for some city slicking.

When you visit Australia, your feet will end up tired and sweaty from those long days wearing shoes so do yourself a favor: pack sandals and give your feet some well-deserved cushion and fresh air. These Olukai flip flops are ultra-comfortable, well-made, and come in a variety of colors.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Trucker

As you should know by now, the sun in Australia is intense and you will undoubtedly be spending a lot of time outside. Having a hat on your Australia packing list is a good way to ensure your face is protected from the sun throughout the day.

Patagonia makes great hats. I have probably bought three or four of these over the last five years. Simple. Practical. Comfortable. That is what you are after especially if you are headed into Australia’s national parks .

Money Belt By Pacsafe

Whilst Australia is not particularly dangerous (except for spiders crocodiles, snakes and boozed up bogans), crime can still happen and tourists are sometimes targeted.

Therefore it is always a good idea to use a money belt to hide your cash just in case something does go wrong.

If you get mugged by a Kangaroo, then at least it won’t get your cash!

Hydroflask Vacuum Bottle 32 oz.

Packing a reusable water bottle is probably the best thing you can personally do to combat single-use plastic bottle use whilst traveling. There is simply zero need to buy plastic water bottles.

We love the Hydroflask Vacum Bottle for its quality and because it keeps cold water cold for many hours and vice versa for hot beverages. This bottle is the ideal water bottle to get not just for Australia trip but for daily use. Please don’t be that person buying plastic water bottles. We are all judging you…especially mother earth.

If you go with the Hydroflask, you’ll probably never need to buy another waterbottle again.

MSR Hubba Hubba 2p

There are loads of hostels in Australia but to be honest, they ain’t cheap. Furthermore, the country offers some amazing camping opportunities. Therefore, to save money and get the most from the Oz experience, pack a good tent.

This is one is a great all rounder. It’s not “ultralight” but is still pretty comfortable when packed into your backpack. As far as budget backpacking tents go, this is one of the best. It’s a happy medium between the ‘prepared for anything’ mode and the ‘I wanted to go for a trek so I bought this for 2000 rupees’ afterthought.

Nemo Disco 15

At some point in your trip to Australia, you will probably go camping or at the very least will spend a night at a hostel with insufficient bedding, or with dirty bedding that you would rather not lay in. Therefore bringing a sleeping bag is often a great investment.

There are a LOT of sleeping bags on the market today and we have tried a lot of them. The quality and standards varies and not always in correlation with the price – pricey does not always mean better. The Nemo Disco 15 is a great all rounder sleeping bag packing in warmth, durability and a reasonable price tag.

Hanging Toiletry Bag

Another backpacker/traveler favorite for staying organized is a hanging toiletry bag . It’s extremely helpful to have all of your accessories neatly gathered in one bag that you can hang for easy accessibility, especially when counter space isn’t plentiful or even available. A well-organized bag is worth having whether you’re tree whilst camping or a hook in the wall – it helps to have quick access to all your stuff.

Historically, I have been the guy who has my stuff all over the bathroom, so getting one of these things really changed the toiletry game for me. Plus they are not too expensive either. A no-brainer essential when packing for Australia.

I’m often asked questions about what to pack for Australia. What to pack for Australia depends on lots of things – are you looking for things to take to Australia for a holiday, for a backpacking adventure or are you moving to Australia permanently and wondering what should be on your Australia packing list?!

For this article, I’m going to assume that you’re moving to Australia or travelling to Australia for a long period of time and we’re going to talk about what to pack for Australia in your hand luggage as well as in your suitcase. You might be sending a shipping container of things or some luggage via a luggage delivery service separately too, so this post will also help you work out the important things to keep with you.

Travel checklist Australia: What goes in your hand luggage?

If you’re wondering what to pack for Australia, here are my travel essentials for Australia to go in your hand luggage .

Passports and tickets

I like to use a travel wallet to keep everything together.

Visa letters

If you’re moving to Australia, don’t assume just because your visa is on your passport that you won’t need to show the actual letter multiple times too! Print out a few copies of it as you’ll need them.

Gather an Australia pack of important documents

In this, you need to include:

originals of personal documents (birth certificates, marriage certificate, qualification certificates, police checks from your visa etc.) These will be essential pieces of identification in Australia. Make sure you leave photocopies of all of these with someone you trust back home just in case you ever lose these originals, and it’s also helpful if another family member who is travelling with you has a pack of the photocopies on them too because you might need to give them out as ID later when setting up accounts, finding a rental etc. It always pays to try to keep separate copies of things! (You should also scan copies of these and add them to your laptop or portable hard drive so you have a record of them).
any recent bills you might need to chase up later (you never know if you might need to query a final payment, or ring the company up to follow something up).
details of where you’re staying and your hire car confirmations and/or taxi details.

A multi-currency account with debit card

I think a multi-currency account is super handy (I wish I’d had access to one when we were moving but I didn’t know they even existed then!). You can have money in a Wise multi-currency account to tide you over until you can validate your Australian bank account in person and move your money over. You can find out about a Wise Multi-Currency account here . I highly recommend this as an interim measure while waiting for your Australian debit cards to be ordered. It will also come in so handy if you’re moving to Australia as it means you’ll have access to bank accounts in multiple countries, and you’ll be able to use it when you travel in future too.

Your bank account opening confirmation details

Bring any information you’re going to need about your Australian bank account so you’re ready to go in and validate your account when you land. You can find out more about banking in Australia here.

Packing cubes to organise your bags (these work well for hand luggage as well as your suitcase)

While the larger packing cubes are perfect for using in your suitcase, the smaller sets are perfect for organising your hang luggage. You can use them to keep paperwork together, to organise any spare clothes you want to keep clean and dry – and to keep your cables together. Are packing cubes worth it? Absolutely!

Rehydration products to help you get over the jet lag

Air travel leads to dehydration so take some rehydration products with you that you can consume on the go. I like the dissolvable tablets that you can just add to a bottle of water. Make sure your kids have some too – it really does help to ease feelings of jet lag and exhaustion later.

Paracetamol/ibuprofen for you and the kids

For travelling, I find using sachets of medicine is helpful for the kids, or soluble kids paracetamol that you can just pop into a bottle of water. Make sure you pack some for the grown ups too – I always get a bad headache when travelling long haul.

Travel sickness tablets and bands

As someone who has two kids that get travel sick, this is a must for us! I honestly also find the travel bands work too (I lived in them when I was pregnant with twins and suffering severe morning sickness through the pregnancy!) The travel sickness tablets are still important though – we couldn’t travel without them.

Any medication you need for the journey and after you arrive

Don’t pack it all in your hold luggage in case that goes missing. And make sure you bring enough to keep you going until you can sign up to a doctor in Australia if it’s an ongoing prescription.

Travel first aid kit

I never travel anywhere without a little first aid kit. Mine contains: bandages, plasters, antiseptic wipes, antiseptic cream, bite cream and a thermometer. Just remember you’ll need to delcare any bottles of liquid/lotion at check in.

Portable hard drive

This should contain all of your important data from your computer and/or laptop. In an ideal world, you’d take two of these so that two members of your group have one copy for security reasons. If you’re sending your desktop computer in your shipping container, don’t forget to back it up onto this device. And even if you’re taking your laptop in one of your hand luggage bags, make sure it is backed up and the portable drive is kept separate. You never know if your bag might get damaged or stolen.

Portable charger

Our kids frequently use up all of our phone batteries. A portable charger means you can carry on using your devices on the go. These are life savers for long journeys.

Any special photo prints that are irreplaceable

If you’re moving and taking all of your belongings with you, it’s helpful to try to back up what photos you can on a portable hard drive, but I know that I have way too many prints to want to spend the time doing that. I suggest pulling out the most important prints and taking those with your in your hand luggage. Make sure they’re in a folder to keep them flat and protected.

Camera and Laptop

These are delicate items so will travel with you on the flight. Don’t risk packing them in the hold luggage.

It’s always a good idea to have a good book with you!

Notebook and pens

You never know when you’re going to need to make a note of something, and you always need to fill out visa forms on the plane.

Masks, hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes

This is the world we live in now!

A few small sandwich bags and a carrier bag

Use these for rubbish/storing dirty clothes or half-eaten food for the kids.

So you can add layers if the plane feels cold.

Kids inflatable footrest

Travel activities for the kids

Make sure you pack them in a hard case so they don’t get damaged.

Nappies, wipes, nappy bags, formula, travel changing mat, snacks, spare clothes, bibs.

One way travel insurance or backpacking insurance

Feel like you’ve got too much to pack for Australia?

You probably have!

We took so many bags to Australia when we moved as our airline gave us an extra luggage allowance for travelling one way as permanent migrants so we wanted to make the most of it! It was so challenging trying to travel with so many bags and cases with three kids under five.

We paid for the assistance of luggage porters in London (as there was literally no way we could get from the taxi rank into the airport without either leaving our kids or our bags unattended as we just didn’t have enough hands!) The porters were honestly a lifesaver and worth their weight in gold, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. We wanted to take all of the things to keep us going until our shipping container arrived. That didn’t get delivered until about six or seven weeks after we landed, so those suitcases and bags held so many important things including toys for the kids, clothes and travel gear.

If I could go back now though, I would instead send at least a couple of those suitcases via a luggage door-to-door delivery service. That way the bags would have been picked up from our home and delivered directly to us after we’d landed in Australia. It would have taken tonnes of pressure off us trying to juggle so much with the three kids. Sometimes it’s worth trying to save money, and sometimes it’s worth investing to save your sanity and make an experience easier. This was one of those times!

What to wear when travelling to Australia and what to pack in your suitcase

While it’s hot in Australia, it’s often cool on the plane. I prefer to travel long haul in closed toe shoes and trousers. This also means you can wear compression socks which help reduce the risk of DVT. I like to go for layers both for myself and the kids who can never decide if they’re boiling or freezing.

I did pack pyjamas for the kids in case we wanted to get them changed on the plane but to be honest it felt like too much of a faff so we didn’t end up using them. I think for a small baby or young toddler it could help signal to them that it’s bedtime though – anything to help them sleep on the plane!

If you’re wondering what sort of clothes to pack for Australia, consider the season and the location you’re going to. I’m often asked what to pack for Australia in winter or what to pack for Australia in autumn. In Queensland (and in many other states and territories), for instance, year-round you can wear sandals, shorts, dresses and t-shirts. In winter, it’s helpful to have jeans, a hoodie, socks and shoes or trainers/runners as well (you’ll still likely spend a lot of time in shorts and t-shirt but it does get cooler at nights). If you’re heading somewhere that gets colder like Tasmania or Victoria, you’ll likely need to take a coat or jacket. (Coats aren’t something we wear in Queensland often although you might want to pack a rain mac and umbrella too).

In Australia, I generally dress very casually. I’m always wearing either Converse or Saltwater Sandals. I wear wrap dresses or shorts and bamboo t-shirts most of the year. A few weeks of the year, you’ll find me wearing jeans and a hoodie (usually from June – August).

Swimwear and sarongs are essentials to pack in your suitcase no matter what time of the year you’re travelling to Australia. Although you can go shopping when you arrive in Australia, it’s helpful to have some swimmers ready to go in case you want to hit the beach or pool before you’ve had chance to go around the shops. A sun protection top/rash vest/rashie is also important for your kids to protect them from the sun. (If you bring one with you, you can shop for more when you get here).

Suitcase packing list: Australia Travel essentials

There are lots of other travel essentials for Australia to go on your packing list. As I said above, yes you can go shopping when you land but if you at least arrive with some basics it gives you a bit of breathing room to enjoy your new surroundings before you need to rush to the shopping centre.

Get wide-brimmed fabric hats that can fold up in your case. For kids, it’s helpful to get ones with a chin strap too. Baseball caps don’t provide enough protection and kids end up with burnt ears and necks.

I like to travel with at least one bottle of sunscreen because it usually takes a couple of days to get around to heading to the shops. Sunscreen is something you need to wear daily here. You can read all about my experiences with reef-safe zinc sunscreen here .

Insect repellent

Just like sunscreen, it’s helpful to travel with at least one bottle of insect repellent. You can read all about my experience with natural insect repellents here .

It’s handy to take some lightweight, quick-drying towels for beach or pool days. I’m in love with my new Dock and Bay beach towels and pink striped poncho that I just treated myself to over Christmas.

Travel-sized toiletries

Take some travel-sized shampoo/conditioner/body wash etc. You can go to the shops within a few days of landing, so there is no point filling up your case with big bottles. Just remember to make sure that all bottles are packed in something waterproof in your case just in case they leak. You don’t want liquid ending up all over your clothes!

Australia What to pack: Don’t stress!

I know I’ve mentioned above that it’s helpful to take lots of things to Australia so you don’t need to rush out to the shops, but we have plenty of great shops here. You can go out and get more nappies/shampoo/sunscreen etc. when you land so you don’t need to stress about forgetting anything. Target, Big W, Kmart, Coles and Woolworths sell just about everything and anything you could want. It is handy to bring some things though so you can relax and get through the jet lag a little before having to hit the shopping centres.

What to Look For in a Travel Adapter

If you want to cut down on bulk, go for a streamlined, single-type converter, though it might only work in some regions. On the other hand, universal adapters will be effective no matter where you wind up—so if you’re a frequent jet-setter, this might be the best option.

There are other benefits to choosing a lighter product, depending on the space you'll be staying in once you arrive. "Because some hotels and homes have outlets in the most unusual locations, make sure that the adapter is not too large or heavy to fit into sunken sockets," says Charlie Cotton, head of operations at millennial group travel company FTLO Travel.

Newer converters now come with USB ports, eliminating the need for the USB-to-outlet converter for charging tablets and phones. In most cases, this means that you can charge more than one device at a time, which is handy for families—everyone’s gadgets definitely add up on the road—or those traveling with multiple devices .

Forking over a ton of money for a converter you’ll only use once a year doesn’t make sense, so go for a price that correlates with how often you travel. That said, buying one before you leave for vacation is almost always cheaper than on the ground.

Many countries use a single plug type throughout. To ensure your adapter is compatible, you must identify the plug type used in the country or countries on your itinerary. World Standards shares a map that details plug types for every country.

A universal adapter allows you to take your devices worldwide with one compact adapter that fits a variety of outlets. A plug adapter fits a single country’s outlets.

A plug adapter updates the shape of your device’s plug to fit the outlet in the country you’re traveling to. It doesn’t convert voltage. A voltage converter adapts the electrical voltage from the device to the outlet. This is valuable because American devices sometimes operate at a different voltage than is available in other countries.

Use this checklist as a guide to things you may need in your medical kit when travelling – you may need less or more, depending on the activities you may undertake, and the remoteness of the area you visit.

Think about the area you are visiting and what may or may not be available there. Some careful planning and packing before your trip can avoid any wasted time, inconvenience or worse while you’re away. Check with your doctor or travel clinic for advice if you aren’t sure what you may need to keep your travels safe and healthy.

Analgesic (pain relief) medicine such as paracetamol or aspirin.
Antihistamine tablets for bites, stings or allergies.
Cold and flu tablets.
Cough medicine.
Motion sickness tablets.
Throat lozenges or drops.
Antiseptic solution for cleaning wounds or bites.
Antiseptic ointment to apply to a wound.
Blister and wound patches, such as sticking plasters.
Medical adhesive tape, e.g. Micropore.
Wound dressings , e.g. a crepe bandage, gauze swabs and OpSite, and Steristrips, which can often take the place of stitches.

Other items you should think about taking, depending on your individual needs and your destination, include:

Regular prescription medicines, which should be kept in their original containers with clear labels and carried in your hand luggage when travelling. You should also take a letter from your doctor stating the names of the medicines, the dose and that they are for your personal use, plus a copy of your prescriptions, written using the generic name of the drug to avoid confusion with trade names in foreign countries. Some countries may not let visitors bring in certain medicines, so you may wish to check first with the embassy or consulate in Australia, before you go. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia has information on travelling with medicines.
Medical equipment you use regularly, such as sterile syringes and needles.
Spare pair of glasses or your eye prescription.
Condoms, birth control pills, or other contraceptives.
Water purifying tablets.
A mosquito-proof bed net.
Hand sanitiser or wipes.

Prescription medicines for travel-related conditions

Travel to developing countries, remote areas, tropical climates and high altitudes increases your risk of certain conditions that you would not encounter at home or during travel to developed temperate-climate countries. Many of these conditions are treated or avoided by taking prescription medicines. So, apart from taking your regular prescription medicines with you, as described above, your doctor or travel clinic may suggest some of the following:

Altitude sickness medicines.

This bag holds more than you'd expect from just looking at it.

The limited edition colors often sell out fast.

You might be most familiar with Away for its selection of hardside luggage and weekender bags, but the brand carries travel accessories, too, including this large toiletry bag that earned high marks across the board during our tests.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

We also noted the durability of the water-resistant nylon, which is lightweight without feeling cheap. The interior of the bag is coated with an easy-to-wipe material, allowing you to clean up any spills quickly. The bag comes in five color options (with limited edition colorways offered on occasion), as well as a smaller size option and a hanging version of the bag.

If you're a toiletry minimalist, this is the case for you. The highly compact Dagne Dover Mila keeps all your products neat and organized in a tiny, plush drum made of water-resistant recycled poly. Unzip the lid and you'll see a grid created by a removable insert — use the insert to keep your products separated from one another, reducing their impact if the toiletry bag is jumbled around. There's also a zippered mesh pocket in the lid, as well as four elastic loops to hold items like makeup brushes and lip balm.

We did notice, however, that the insert takes up quite a bit of space in the bag, and you'd be able to squeeze quite a few more items inside if you remove it instead. Of course in that case, you wouldn't have much help in terms of organization. Ultimately, we love the flexibility — you can customize the bag to suit your needs.

There aren't any extra pockets or pouches for organization.

While many toiletry kits are water-resistant, this one is fully waterproof, and that makes all the difference if you're on an outdoor adventure like camping or a multi-day kayaking trip. It's made from a special nylon that has a secret superpower: "dry-through" technology, which allows moisture to escape from the bag without letting any in. That means your toiletries (like a wet toothbrush) can dry while they're in the bag.

We found this bag to be deceptively spacious, given that it looks like a simple pencil pouch at first glance. The bag expands at the bottom, allowing it to stand alone on a flat surface while giving you the space to fit larger items in with ease. That said, there aren't any useful organizational tools to keep your products in order — this is a fairly bare-bones bag.

It's a fairly pricey bag.

When you have a large number of toiletries to bring with you on vacation, the best thing you can do is choose a toiletry bag that helps you keep everything organized. This is that bag! Though it appears small from the outside, the bag is so thoughtfully designed with organizational tools — we found that there's a pocket for just about everything. The main compartment is large enough to fit small bottles, while mesh pockets of various sizes line the walls. There's also a separate pocket for your toothbrush, which keeps it nice and clean.

Other highlights include a wide opening to access each pocket easily, and the ability to stand on its own thanks to the bag's layer of high-density foam that also helps protect the items inside. It also has a handy hanging hook if you'd prefer to keep some counter space clear.

Best Dopp Kit

Organization is limited to three pockets.

What are dopp kits, anyway? Though the term can be used interchangeably with "toiletry bag" today, the dopp kit was originally a durable toiletry bag devised by German leather maker Charles Doppelt that was popular with military personnel in the 20th century. It typically takes the silhouette seen here in this bag — a large main compartment, sometimes with side pockets.

What dopp kits are great for is space; we were amazed by how much could fit in this bag, especially because it's expandable with side clips and adjustable webbing straps. As such, it's ideal for longer trips where you'll need as much space as you can get. We also love that it's made from an antimicrobial and antibacterial nylon (yes, it's water-resistant), though we think it could use a little more organization beyond two interior pockets and one exterior one.

Best Small Hanging

Sea to summit hanging toiletry bag.

Small and lightweight, it's perfectly portable.

It has to hang as it won't stand up on its own.

When it comes to hanging bags, this one is perfectly balanced. It's made from an ultra-thin, water-resistant nylon and takes the shape of a saddlebag, which is ideal for hanging. We found that no matter how many items we stuffed in there, the bag never really felt weighed down; all the products were perfectly situated and easy to access, thanks to a plethora of pockets.

This bag also comes with a detachable mirror, which makes it great for outdoor adventures when you don't have access to a vanity, as well as handles for easy transport. Ultimately, it is perfect for people limited on space and weight, whether they're on a multi-day trek that requires them to carry all their gear or traveling for an extended period of time with limited storage space. The toiletry bag comes in two sizes (we tested the smaller one) and four color options.

Best Large Hanging

Bagsmart hanging toiletry bag.

This is an excellent value if you need to store full-size items.

The material is difficult to clean.

Bagsmart is known for making convenient travel products at affordable prices, and that's certainly true of its hanging toiletry bag. Before it's opened, the bag looks just like a little quilted briefcase; inside is an extraordinary amount of storage. Unzip the perimeter and the bag unfurls into four panels of hanging storage for your toiletries, which we found perfectly capable of storing just about every toiletry in the book save for full-size bottles of shampoo and body wash. While most of the storage compartments are variously sized zippered pockets, some actually have elastic bands to help hold your items in place.

The quilted material is made of polyester, which we found to be a little difficult to clean. It is water-resistant, though, and the texture adds a nice visual quality. Plus, it comes in ten colorways.

Best for Cosmetics

Béis the cosmetic case.

The brush holder and mirror are removable.

The main compartment is pretty much just one big open space.

The clean, minimalist design that Béis is so loved for comes through in its cosmetic case: a sturdy bag with plenty of space for makeup aficionados. For starters, it's offered in eight elegant earth tone hues. But then there's the simple rectangular shape, which feels almost handbag-like in its sculptural form, as well as luxe hardware that adds to that handbag quality.

Though this bag can carry all types of toiletries, it's specifically designed with cosmetics in mind. That's evident from the removable mirror and brush holder, which has PVC material where the brush heads will go for easy cleaning. There are also a few slip pockets, which we found especially helpful for palettes. One thing to note, however, is that the main compartment of this toiletry bag is simply a vast space without any dividers to organize individual products. That said, we can report that nothing broke or spilled during evaluations.

Best for Men

Bagsmart toiletry bag for men.

It opens wide with a double zipper.

It's made of canvas, which may be hard to clean but is water-resistant.

Fun fact: dopp kits were originally designed for men so it makes perfect sense why this one is designed to fit shaving and grooming products in particular. It's made of canvas for a rough-and-tumble look, and it's offered in seven colors (mostly neutrals, but also light pink) and two sizes. Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to be stuffed into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

Best for Short Trips

Tumi response travel kit.

It opens like a clamshell.

It's not water-resistant.

Luxury brand Tumi doesn't only make high-end suitcases and travel bags — they also make high-end toiletry bags. Made from ballistic nylon (and offered in three colorways), this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

Best Leather

Take one look at the Cuyana Travel Beauty Case, and it's clear that you're dealing with a luxury item. Made from Italian pebbled leather, this toiletry bag is extremely elegant in each of its three colors: ecru, soft rose, and black. We found that this is high-quality leather that's not so delicate you have to worry about damaging it when stuffing it in your backpack or weekender.

As for storage, there are two main compartments: one with an internal elastic pocket for storing larger items and another that has elastic straps to hold items like makeup brushes in place. They open like a clamshell, and between them is a detachable pouch for smaller items. The pouch is ideal for a few items that can be used to refresh your makeup on a travel day, but it can't hold enough products for a full face.

MZ Wallace Mica Cosmetic Case

It's a no-nonsense bag — simply stash your stuff and go.

There's only one main compartment with a smaller zippered pocket.

The best thing about a pouch like this one is that it's very straightforward — all you have to do is toss in your items without giving much thought to organization. We loved this particular toiletry bag because it's more spacious than it seems at first glance. That's particularly true of the one zippered pocket inside: it was able to hold seven makeup brushes.

By the same token, the lack of organization might be frustrating to some. Depending on your preference, you might wish there were a few dividers or additional pockets to keep things a little tidier inside the bag. Still, the amount of space it has for items is impressive, and for some travelers, that might be just what they're looking for.

Best Budget

Wandf toiletry bag.

It comes in nearly 20 colors.

The main compartment only has one zipper, which makes it a little tough to retrieve items.

As you're probably well aware by this point, toiletry bags can get quite expensive — but they don't have to be. This is a particularly budget-friendly model, yet it accomplishes just about everything you'd need a toiletry bag to do. For one, it has multiple compartments. And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

Other Toiletry Bags We Liked

Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag : We love the soft, water-resistant neoprene material of this bag, as well as the two detached pouches for easy organization. (And did we mention the colors? Those are beautiful, too!) Unfortunately, we found it to be a tight fit to squeeze both of the detachable pouches into the main bag when all three had items in them.
State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit : This is a spacious bag with a detachable pouch for additional storage — there's not much to not like here. But we think it's a bit too expensive, and we found the hook to be too small to use in many cases. Because it's so spacious, it's best for longer trips, as we think it might take up a bit too much room in a carry-on bag.
L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag, Medium : A favorite for decades, this bag is the king when it comes to storage space and organization — there are pockets for just about everything. Some might find the sheer number of storage spaces to be overwhelming. But others, particularly those going on long trips or families who might be sharing a toiletry bag, will love the roominess.
Baggu Dopp Kit : This bag packs flat, which is great when you need to store it somewhere. But when you expand it, you'll find that it's large enough to carry all of your toiletries and then some. The only thing we worried about was the durability of the materials. Though it did not fail any of our rigorous tests, we suspect it may wear out over time.

We tested 52 toiletry bags and cosmetics cases in our lab to determine the best products.

Testing started with an analysis of the bag when it was empty; we examined the materials, the construction, and the overall design.

Then we packed the bags with common travel essentials like toiletry bottles, makeup, and dental products, among other items. We then re-evaluated the design of the bag, noting overall capacity; convenience and security of organizational compartments, pockets, and pouches; closure functionality (such as zippers, magnetic clasps, and Velcro tabs); and overall sturdiness and stability of the bag.

Next, we put the bags into weekenders, carry-on luggage, and backpacks to see how they'd fit. We also carried around the larger bags to evaluate the feel of the toiletry bags in them.

Finally, we rated each toiletry bag on its capacity, design, portability, and value, all the while considering extra characteristics like the material's water-resistance, ease of cleaning, and any extra features, such as hanging straps or built-in mirrors.

Testing of the toiletry kits then continues for a period of six months on our real-world trips, and we will continue to update this article based on the results.

When the bag was fully packed, we placed it inside a large weekender bag to get a sense of its weight by carrying it around our lab. We also checked how much space the bag took up inside the weekender bag to determine if there was ample room to store other items, such as clothing and accessories. We then determined whether the bag would be suitable for weekend trips and/or longer vacations.

After rating for all attributes, we checked each bag's price to rate the overall value.

Tips for Buying a Toiletry Bag

Look at the design of the bag.

Some toiletry bags are voids — they have one cavernous space to fit all your items. But others are separated into compartments with pockets and pouches to keep your items in place. Depending on what you're storing in your toiletry bag, you might prefer more organizational tools than a single open space. Also consider the material; more durable, water-resistant materials are ideal for toiletry bags, since they'll be getting quite a bit of use on the road.

Consider capacity and the items you pack

What do you plan on putting in a toiletry bag? If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

While a clear bag is not explicitly stated on all sections of the TSA website , this is the common practice and can speed things up at the security checkpoint. Toiletry bags that don't hold any liquids, as well as toiletry bags that will be checked in your suitcase (regardless of their contents), do not need to be clear.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

A TSA-approved toiletry bag is one that meets the TSA's requirements for the 3-1-1 rule regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes packed in carry-ons. These products must be 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less, and they all must fit in " 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag ."

You can pack just about anything in a toiletry bag, from hair products to body washes to makeup. Depending on what you plan on putting in your toiletry bag, you may want to look for ones with special pockets — many toiletry bags have designated spots for items like makeup brushes or palettes to keep them secure.

There’s so much staggering natural beauty in Australia, your loved one will likely spend some time camping. A head torch, while not the most fashionable, is essential and one of the best gifts for someone travelling to Australia. Rental Vehicle Excess Pack

Our rental car excess add-on covers the insurance excess on any dings, dents or theft to your hire car or hire vehicle while overseas or in Australia.

Travel insurance for car hire excess.

If you hire a vehicle from a car rental company while on your trip and it is involved in an accident, is damaged or is stolen while in your care, Travel with Kit will pay you the excess on the car rental insurance you took our with the car hire company.

The most we will pay is $5,000.

Rental vehicle means only a rented sedan, campervan, hatchback or station wagon, four-wheel drive or mini bus/people mover rented from a licensed motor vehicle rental company.

Rental Vehicle Hire in Australia In Australia the LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) insurance must be taken out when you hire a rental vehicle and this cover has an excess. You have the option to take out additional cover with the rental vehicle company called Excess Reduction.

If the excess the hire company charges is less than the cover provided under the travel policy ie less than $5,000 you can elect not to take the excess reduction cover with the car hire company because your travel policy will cover the excess up to $5,000.

You must read the terms and conditions relating to both the options provided by the rental vehicle companies as there are exclusions.

Rental Vehicle Hire Overseas If you are renting a vehicle overseas, the USA for example, you can hire a car without taking any insurance whatsoever.

The hirer’s/driver’s liability is therefore the full cost of repairs and any third party damage. Depending on the accident or damage this could amount to a substantial sum.

Therefore, our travel insurance policy requires you to take out some insurance cover with the rental vehicle company because our insurance excess cover with a maximum benefit of $5,000 will not be enough cover in the case of a serious accident. Even if you take out their insurance cover, the excess with their policies can still be $15k to $20k.

This means you need to check the excess you will be liable to pay with their insurance, and take an excess reduction option with the hire car company if it’s greater than $5,000 because your travel policy will only cover you up to $5,000 excess.

Note that our cover is for licensed rental companies such as H ertz, Europcar, Avis, Budget or Thrifty , not for car share programs like Car Nextdoor or Go Get .

Keep in mind

you use a rental vehicle not in accordance with the rental agreement
you use a rental vehicle to transport items other than personal luggage
