12 Best Travel Trailers With Office Space

Best Travel Trailers With Office Space Cover

Sharing is caring!

In recent years, travel trailers with office space have been increasingly in demand. RVing is still, for many, an escape from work. But dedicated office space in a travel trailer is a must for digital nomads, remote workers, and homeschoolers.

As the demand for office space on the road has increased, many RV manufacturers have taken note. It’s becoming more common to see travel trailer floorplans with desks or even dual-purpose office spaces.

Still, DIYers love the relatively blank slate of a toy hauler’s garage when looking to create an on-the-go office. Even bunkhouses are great options for retro-fitting office space in a travel trailer.

This article will show you the best travel trailers with office space. You’ll also learn about some DIY ideas about turning your existing space into an RV workspace.

Office Space in Travel Trailers Makes Remote Work Possible

Office Space in Travel Trailers Makes Remote Work Possible

Dedicated office space within a travel trailer is a huge bonus. Sure, you could set up a workstation at a dinette, but that’s one of many solutions and might not be your best option. Constantly setting up your computer and other office supplies, only to store them away for a meal, is inconvenient at best.

Not only that, but the inability to separate a workspace from the main living room within your travel trailer can be very distracting. Office space in a travel trailer makes remote work feasible by keeping everything you need in one place and as free from distraction as possible.

Recently their aesthetic has evolved from a backwoods cabin vibe to more of the ever-popular farmhouse rustic style. With the knotty pine design of the floors and two-toned cabinetry, even the top interior designer TV personalities are sure to love the decor of this RV.

  • Length: 35.5 ft.
  • GVWR: 9,000 lbs.
  • CCC: 2,378 lbs.
  • Sleep: 5-10

Bunkhouses are great options for those that work on the road. There are so many innovative ways to utilize the bunk room as an office space. The Heartland Trail Runner 30RBK has a bunkhouse that easily doubles as an office.

Located in the back of the coach, the private bunkhouse has a dinette that can double as a desk. The overhead bunk flips up, giving you extra headroom while you work.

There’s even additional storage in the form of a small entertainment center that can be repurposed for office supplies. DIYers can add an extension to the open storage space, making it ideal for a keyboard, turning it into a third RV workspace.

This 35-foot camper has three distinct spaces. Due to the privacy of the doors and the distance between the bunkroom/office and the rest of the living space, your office area will be quiet and distraction-free.

The bunkhouse can easily transform from an office by day to a sleeping space by night. The Heartland Trail Runner is a great option for RVing families with work-from-the-road needs.

7. Forest River X-Lite 273QBXL

✅ Easy to adapt the bunkhouse to office space!

⛔ Don’t lean too hard on the Versa-Lounge back cushions.

  • UVW: 6,028 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 752 lbs.
  • Length: 33.5 ft.
  • GVWR: 7,752 lbs.
  • CCC: 1,724 lbs.

Forest River doesn’t offer built-in desks, but the X-Lite 273QBXL still ranks among the best travel trailers with office space on the market. That’s because the versatile bunkhouse can be easily transformed into office space.

The tall wardrobe cabinet in the bunkroom is perfect for a standing desk. If a traditional desk is more your style, the Jiffy Sofa can easily be removed and replaced with a desk of your choosing.

But if you want to work comfortably, set up an adjustable surface space for your keyboard and mouse so you can lounge while working.

With the bunkroom/office, the X-Lite is one of the few travel trailers under 8,000 pounds that offers this type of separate space. You can easily tow this travel trailer with a Ford Expedition or Toyota’s Hybrid Sequoia.

With office space out of the main living area and its easy towing capabilities, the X-Lite 273QBXL is an excellent choice.

8. Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS

Best Travel Trailers with Office Space Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS Floorplan

✅ There are plenty of 110v, USB, and TV hookups in the right spots!

⛔ We’d prefer a cooktop in the outside kitchen.

  • UVW: 8,600 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 1,090 lbs.
  • Length: 37.10
  • GVWR: 10,950 lbs.
  • CCC: 2,350 lbs.
  • Sleep: 5-12

Jayco’s best travel trailers with office space are the Jay Flight 33RBTS and its sister coach, the 324BDS. With the TV outlet and coax cable hookup conveniently located near the dinette, we think the 33RBTS is the better pick purely for ease of hooking up a computer.

You can easily use the bunkhouse dinette as your workstation. However, if you prefer a more traditional desk, you could remove the rear dinette and replace it with a desk of your choosing.

If you prefer a proper desk, then the 324BDS is also worth considering. The TV and internet hookups are located on the camp side and, therefore, less conveniently located to your workspace. That being said, the J-cube sofas in the bunkhouse are easy to remove, even for the most novice DIYer.

Either one of these Jaycos is an excellent choice of travel trailers with office space. Which one you prefer is really a matter of preference.

Travel Trailer Pro Tip: Before the RV office space revolution, the bunkhouse dinette became passe in the mid and late 20-teens. Yet Jayco had the foresight to keep the feature going in some of their lineups. So if you’re lucky enough to find a used model with the bunkhouse dinette, grab it before it’s gone.

Toy Hauler Travel Trailers With Office Space

9. keystone outback ultra-lite 240urs .

Best Travel Trailers with Office Space Keystone Outback Ultra-Lite 240URS Exterior

  • UVW: 5,491 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 590 lbs.
  • Length: 28.6 ft.
  • GVWR: 7,590 lbs.
  • CCC: 2,099 lbs.

Another travel trailer under 30 feet with office space is the Keystone Outback Ultra Lite 240URS. This RV has a really great layout because of the rear slide-out for the owner’s bedroom area. We love how spacious this innovative floor plan feels.

This Keystone Outback is also untraditional because the front garage has 2 twin bunk beds rather than a drop-down queen. The garage area in the front is perfect for carrying heavy cargo as it helps prevent travel trailer sway by concentrating more weight towards the tongue of the trailer.

The front cargo space is also easily transformed into an RV office space. Use the large ramp to move office furniture in and out. This compact and lightweight toy hauler allows you to maximize your living space in more ways than one.

10. Alliance Valor 42V13

Best Travel Trailers with Office Space Alliance Valor 42V13 Floorplan

✅ We like how the garage half bath doesn’t take up garage space!

⛔ For child safety, we’d prefer the loft open in the living space.

  • UVW: 15,600 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 3,050 lbs.
  • Length: 44.1 ft.
  • GVWR: 20,000 lbs.
  • CCC: 4,400 lbs.

If you have a work hard, play hard mentality, the Alliance Valor 42V13 is the towable RV with office space for you. The Valor 42V13 has three distinct spaces and two bathrooms, making it perfect for larger families or couples with staggered schedules.

The garage can be modified into a spacious office. With a push of a button, the HappiJac sofas are easily stowed, creating enough space for two separate desks. Using the sofa supports to hold your desks has the added benefit of allowing you to move your surface space to various heights.

Modifying the trailer in this way also means that your desk easily stores up and out of the way with the push of a button. You’ll also love the track tie-down system, which allows you to secure anything from a file cabinet to a four-wheeler.

The Valor 42V13 is an investment worth making for those who need a dedicated RV workspace that can still do double duty as a garage.

11. Genesis Supreme RV Vortex 2715V

Best Travel Trailers with Office Space Genesis Supreme RV Vortex 2715V Exterior

✅ All of the garage furniture is moveable!

⛔ The slide-out isn’t flat-floored, so it may not be the best place for your desk.

  • UVW: 7,460 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 1,320 lbs.
  • Length: 32.9 ft.
  • GVWR: 9,900 lbs.
  • CCC: 2,440 lbs.

If you want a lightweight toy hauler under 10,000 pounds, take a look at the Genesis Supreme Vortex 2715V travel trailer toy hauler. This RV is a half-ton towable toy hauler that needs a heavy tow package. The tow package upgrade is worth it since this Vortex has a 15-foot garage with an optional slide-out.

That optional slideout is ideal for a DIY-standing RV workspace. You can create the perfect out-of-the-way office space in this travel trailer by replacing the sofa with a desk.

There’s even overhead storage in the slide, which is great for housing all of your work supplies. With two additional sofas in this toy hauler travel trailer, you won’t miss the sofa on the slide.

This travel trailer sells regionally. If you aren’t near a west coast authorized dealer, consider making the drive because this travel trailer with office space is hard to pass up.

12. Grand Design Momentum 397THS

Best Travel Trailers with Office Space Grand Design Momentum 397THS Exterior

✅ Dropping the floor in the master shower adds more height!

⛔ The garage overhead bins are very high up and don’t have doors.

  • UVW: 16,250 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 3,570 lbs.
  • Length: 44.2 ft.
  • CCC: 3,750 lbs.

Another luxury towable RV with office space is the Grand Design Momentum 397THS . This RV has a large garage that’s easy to customize. Not only that, but this RV boasts a spacious owner’s bedroom in addition to a living area with dual slideouts.

The garage space is perfect for an office area for many reasons. Many like the upgraded three-season doors that come in clear, tinted, or blackout. Regardless of the amount of light or privacy you need in your RV workspace, there’s an option for you.

Like other fifth wheel toy haulers, the two sofas under the drop-down bed are easily removable. Replace them with a desktop anchored to the HappiJac supports for an adjustable-height RV workstation.

You can also wheel in heavier, more substantial furniture with the ramp and open garage floorplan. This RV garage is a great jumping-off point for any type of home office.

Perks of Having Built-in Office Space in Your Travel Trailer

Perks of Having Built-in Office Space in Your Travel Trailer

One of the main advantages of having office space built right into your travel trailer is the time you’ll save. Dedicated office space means your monitor, computer, printer, and any other office supplies you need on a regular basis can all remain set up and in one place.

You won’t have to waste time setting up your RV office space whenever you need to get some work done. Also, this’ll decrease wasted production time searching for things you need for work.

Office storage space allows you to keep everything from client files to video equipment organized and easily accessible.

Another benefit of having dedicated office space in your travel trailer is the ability to free yourself from potential distractions. If your office area is in a bunkroom or toy hauler garage, it’s easy to close the door and focus on your work.

There are so many options for creating the perfect RV home office in your travel trailer. If you work from the road, an on-the-go office can be a dream come true.

Do You Need a Big Travel Trailer to Have an Office Space?

Do You Need a Big Travel Trailer to Have an Office Space

Many RVers may be under the impression that they need a large travel trailer in order to dedicate space to an office. However, it’s important to think outside the box when determining ways you might be able to incorporate office space into your travel trailer.

You are one step ahead if your RV has a desk already included. However, if you’re looking to retrofit a travel trailer with an office, consider space-saving solutions like standing desks or wall-mounted murphy desks.

You can’t sleep and work simultaneously, so making a bedroom pull double duty as an RV office is another great option. There are many ways to incorporate an RV office space into even the smallest travel trailers.

Does a Toy Hauler Garage Make a Good Office Space?

Does a Toy Hauler Garage Make a Good Office Space

As large, open, yet separate living spaces, toy hauler garages have always enticed RV DIYers. These garages are excellent blank slates from which you can create the RV office space of your dreams.

Toy hauler garages are especially well suited for office transformations because many have HappiJac sofas. These sofas are easily removable, and the brackets left behind make excellent desktop supports.

Toy hauler garages also have ramps and D-ring tie-down brackets. You couldn’t ask for a better space to move in and secure heavy work furniture and equipment.

Also, most RV toy hauler garages are separated from the rest of the travel trailer by a door. You’ll be free from distractions in this type of travel trailer office space.

Should You Just Use Your Dinette as an Office?

Should You Just Use Your Dinette as an Office

You can set your computer up at your dinette and work from there, but it’s definitely not ideal. Dinette spaces are cramped. Unless you use a laptop computer, there likely won’t be enough space for your various computer peripherals.

Also, dinettes are typically located in the center of any camper’s living space. This makes them one of the loudest and most distracting places to work.

If you and your significant other both work from the road, you almost certainly won’t have enough space or privacy at a dinette. As you can imagine, those noise and privacy concerns increase exponentially with kids.

You’ll want to use an ergonomic laptop stand and other aids to avoid long-term wrist injury. Remember, the dinette’s design is for eating, not working.

How to Make Your Own DIY Office Space in a Travel Trailer

There are many options for creating your own DIY office space in a travel trailer. You can simply remove the cube sofa and add a desk without any demo.

You can uninstall HappiJac sofas in a toy hauler and add desktops that can be raised or lowered.

Another possibility is to fully remove an unneeded bunk or dinette and replace it with a traditional desk.

Whatever route you choose, carving out the perfect office space in your travel trailer is relatively easy. You just need to know what to look for to make your on-the-road office great.

5 Things to Look for in Travel Trailer Office Space

1. dedicated desk space .

Things to Look for in Travel Trailer Office Space Dedicated Desk Space

Any office space in a travel trailer needs dedicated desk space. You‘ll save so much time when you can leave your computer and RV workstation set up even when not working.

2. Adequate Space for Your Chair

Things to Look for in Travel Trailer Office Space Adequate Space for Your Chair

A proper office space, even one in a travel trailer, needs a proper desk chair . Look for space with room for a standard office chair. Just be careful if you go with a rolling model. You’ll need a way to lock the wheels or secure the chair as you travel down the road.

3. Desk Storage

Things to Look for in Travel Trailer Office Space Desk Storage

Don’t forget you’ll want somewhere to store your work essentials. You may want to keep your computer set up, but things like printer paper, hard drives, and files need to be organized and out of the way properly.

Look for storage you can repurpose, like overhead cabinets and secondary wardrobes. You can even find portable storage units to add to your RV workspace.

4. Personal Tastes

Things to Look for in Travel Trailer Office Space Personal Tastes

If you spend a lot of time in your travel trailer office, you’ll want the ability to personalize the space. You’ll appreciate the room with a small plant or picture of your family.

Adding personal touches and making the space comfortable are easy ways to increase happiness and productivity while you work.

5. Good Lighting

Things to Look for in Travel Trailer Office Space Good Lighting

Regardless of whether or not you have a house plant, you’ll want good lighting in your RV workspace. Look for a space with lighting that meets your work needs.

Perhaps large windows are ideal for your office space. But if you work on the computer, the ability to block light and glare may be better. Vloggers may have additional lighting challenges as more space may be needed for their equipment.

Remember, you can always add extra lights that can be turned on and off as needed. This can be especially important in a toy hauler where the overhead bed can create a cave-like feel.

Should More RV Manufacturers Put Office Spaces in Their Travel Trailers?

Should More RV Manufacturers Put Office Spaces in Their Travel Trailers

In 1997 David Manners and Tsugio Makimoto published a book called the Digital Nomad. They predicted that technology would eventually allow people to return to a nomadic state by making it possible to work from anywhere. The events of 2020 saw that prediction become a reality for millions.

At the same time, a global pandemic shifted thousands of workers out of traditional offices; teleconferencing on internet platforms exploded in popularity. Suddenly work-from-home professions, once considered rare, became the norm.

At the same time, the demand for motorhomes and travel trailers was on the rise. RVing attracted more attention than ever before because it was one of the few forms of travel that remained possible and relatively safe.

More and more people flocked to the RV lifestyle. The changing nature of the workforce also meant they could extend their trips beyond weekend getaways. Suddenly, the RV industry was inundated with requests for travel trailers with office space.

Since then, manufacturers have begun including everything from full desks to more dual-purpose spaces in their floorplans. But they could do more.

While some professions have returned to traditional office settings, the nature of work for many has permanently shifted to telecommuting. Not only are more people working from home than ever before, but there are more options for virtual learning as well.

Families, no longer restricted by the need to report to an office or school building daily, are taking their lives on the road. No longer is full-time RV living restricted to retirees. RV manufacturers would do well to continue this trend and develop even more travel trailer floorplans with office space.

Office Space

Keystone RV Bullet 287QBS Office Space

The office space in this travel trailer requires you to repurpose a portion of the bunkhouse into office space.

As the rear bunkhouse offers not only three sleeping births but also a small two-seater dinette booth that can easily be converted into a make-shift office.

As the small dinette booth offers a good size table with more than enough room for a laptop and whatever else you might need.

Plus the sleeping birth located above the dinette booth pivots up and out of the way to provide more headroom.

And because the bunkhouse on this trailer has a residential door, you can close the space off from the rest of the trailer when you really need to focus.

2. Forest River Wildwood 30KQBSS

  • Dry Weight : 6,943 Pounds

The Forest River Wildwood 30KQBSS has an average price of $36,000.

And like the Keystone Bullet 287QBS from above, it too offers a ton of features, despite its more affordable price.

As this travel trailer has a beautiful interior with plenty of amenities to keep you comfortable while on the road.

Including a fully equipped L-shaped kitchen with lots of counter space and a huge pantry.

As well as a spacious living room with a slide-out and a large L-shaped versa lounge, a dinette booth, and an entertainment center with a built-in fireplace.

And if you need some extra sleeping space the Wildwood 30KQBSS offers a bunkhouse with a set of bunks in the rear.

Forest River Wildwood 30KQBSS Office Space

The Forest River Wildwood 30KQBSS offers a very similar office space compared to the Keystone RV Bullet 287QBS from above.

As it too offers a small two-seater dinette booth in the rear bunkhouse that you can easily convert and use as a make-shift office.

Plus, just like the Keystone RV from above, the sleeping berth located above the dinette booth pivots up and out of the way to provide more headroom.

3. Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK

  • Price : $36,500
  • Length : 36 Feet 8 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 7,864 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 8
  • Slide-Outs : 2

The third travel trailer with office space on this list is the Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK, which has an average price of $36,500.

Again, making it a super affordable travel trailer, especially when you take into account how much this camper offers.

As this well-equipped camper from Coachmen provides a huge rear bunk house, a large u-shaped dinette booth, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a spacious owner’s suite with a queen bed.

Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK Floorplan

Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK Floorplan

But the amenities don’t stop there on this feature-rich camper.

As the Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK also offers an exterior kitchen with a pull-out griddle, mini fridge, and sink, as well as a cargo rack that allows you to bring all your outdoor toys with you.

Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK Office Space

Like the two travel trailers from above, the office space in the Coachmen Legacy Edition 323BHDSCK is located in the rear bunkhouse of the trailer.

But this is where the similarities end.

Because the bunkhouse in this travel trailer offers what Coachmen calls a cube futon, instead of a small dinette booth.

Which are basically soft cubes that can be used in a variety of ways as furniture.

But what makes this setup ideal for an RV office is that the cubes can be easily removed.

Which provides a blank space for you to set up an RV office space inside the trailer.

By adding different pieces of furniture such as a desk, filing cabinet, or a printer stand.

7. Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS

  • Price : $43,500
  • Length : 37 Feet 10 Inches
  • Dry Weight : 8,640 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity : 9
  • Slide-Outs : 3

At just under 38 feet long, the Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS offers a ton of interior space and amenities, including a large rear bunkhouse.

The Jay Flight 33RBTS offers a very similar floorplan compared to the first two RVs on this list.

However, it does offer a few key upgrades that set this travel trailer apart.

The first of which is the number of slide-outs the trailer offers.

As the Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS offers three separate slide-outs, including one in the bunk house and two in the living room.

Which really helps to open up the interior of this large travel trailer.

Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS Floorplan

Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS Floorplan

The second big upgrade on this camper is that it offers a large center island with a kitchen sink.

And the last big difference is the larger bed in the owner’s suite.

Because while the first two RVs on this list offered a queen-size bed the Jay Flight 33RBTS offers a king-sized bed.

Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS RV Office Space

The office space in this camper, like the first two travel trailers on this list, requires you to repurpose the small dinette booth in the rear bunkhouse into a workspace.

But as was the case with the first two RVs, this area makes a pretty nice RV office space.

As the table provides more than enough room to spread out and the above bunk pivots up and out of the way to provide plenty of headroom.

Plus, as an added bonus, the large wardrobe in the bunkhouse can be fully or at least partially commandeered for all your office supplies.

As this Forest River travel trailer has four distinct areas, giving everyone plenty of room to spread out.

Including a spacious main living area with large opposing slide-outs, a rear bunkhouse, a good size dry bath, and a large front owner’s suite.

Forest River Vibe 34BH Floorplan

Forest River Vibe 34BH Floorplan

And if you’re looking for lots of sleeping capacity, the Forest River Vibe 34BH is one of the best options out there.

As this camper offers one of the highest sleeping capacities available in the RV industry, by sleeping up to 12 people at a time.

The office space in this travel trailer, like previous trailers on this list, requires you to repurpose some of the rear bunkhouse space.

By removing the furniture cubes in the bunkhouse, called Vibe Cubes, and replacing them with an office workspace.

But this can actually be a good thing.

As it allows you to customize the office space to your specific needs, instead of being confined by the RV manufacturer’s design.

Airstream even provides the rolling desk chair that goes perfectly with the desk, to complete the RV office space.

And if you need an extra place to sleep, the office chair will tuck under the desk, allowing you to extend the bench seat into a single bed, providing a private sleeping area.

Airstream Classic 33FB Floorplan

As this camper is not only Airstream’s flagship camper but it’s also one of the highest-end travel trailers you can buy.

The office space in this travel trailer is located in the main living area and is part of the media cabinet, which sits directly across from the couch.

The media cabinet houses a 60-inch projection TV that raises and lowers by remote control.

But while you’re not using the projection screen, the media cabinet doubles as an office space with a large desk, a built-in power station, a comfy chair, and several drawers you can use for office supplies or files.

10 Campers with RV Office Space

Published on January 19th, 2021 by Levi Henley (Full-Time RVer, Content Manager and Media Specialist for RV LIFE)

10 RVs With Space for a Mobile RV Office

For this discussion, we’re defining RV office space as any secondary surface that’s not the dinette or freestanding dining table. It must have seating or a place for a chair. Today’s RVs have electric outlets positioned throughout the coach, so it’s safe to assume there’s a 110v or USB port nearby.

RV office areas also have storage. Using a nearby cabinet, overhead bin, or your laptop bag in certain circumstances would work. For those that use audio/video or graphic design equipment, their storage needs are more complex than others. When they choose an RV, finding one with the space requirements they need should be one of their top priorities.

Pop-up rv office: forest river flagstaff high wall 29sc.

The Forest River Flagstaff HW29SC could make a great RV Office - Photo: Forest River

  • Length: Open- 27.9 Feet/ 21.6 Feet
  • GVWR: 5,000 Pounds
  • Sleep: 6-7 People
  • Tanks: F- 20 Gallons/ Gr- 11 Gallons/ B- 11 Gallons

It’s 4:45 the Friday you’re leaving for your week-long trip with the family, and your boss comes to you with one of those “favors.” Since you’re the only one who has all the knowledge and access to complete the favor, it looks like you’re bringing work home with you. On your way home from the office, half the time, you’re coming up with new words to insult your boss. The other half, you’re figuring out how to tell your family you’re bringing work with you on the trip.

If you have the Flagstaff High Wall 29SC, at least you have a built-in workstation. The sofa below the front pull-out bed has a wide rectangular table to set up your laptop and other work items. Picking up one of those adjustable table workstations will make the space comfortable as you work on that favor project.

You feel a little better about the situation when you learned the kids didn’t finish all of their homework. After they burn off some energy at the campground’s playground, they get to work on their math problems on the slideout U-shaped dinette while your husband puts dinner together. If going to the amusement park doesn’t motivate them to finish their work, maybe their preference for the junk food at the park will, since his interpretation of tuna surprise isn’t that great.

When it’s time to take a break or head out with the family to enjoy your vacation, the nearby cabinet will have enough space to hold your computer, work supplies, and the kids’ things. The trip may have turned into a working vacation, but you aren’t going to miss out on the vacation side.

Truck Camper With RV Office Space: Lance 1172

  • Length: 20.4 Feet
  • GVWR: 4,628 Pounds
  • Sleep: 6 People
  • Tanks: F- 42 Gallons/ Gr- 35 Gallons/ B- 35 Gallons

You wouldn’t think something as compact as a truck camper couldn’t have a separate RV office space, but it’s true. The Lance 1172 is one example. To haul this truck camper, you’re going to need a long bed on your 350/3500 series pickup truck due to its length and payload weight.

When you walk into the passenger-side entry, you’ll find a two-seater sofa on a rear slideout, with a built-in swivel table. If you use a tabletop stand for your laptop, you can finish those reports, coding sub-sections, or presentations comfortably.

If you’re away from the things of man, the Lance 1172 offers an optional 100-watt solar panel or Onan 2500-watt propane generator. Satellite prewiring is standard, so no one can hear you when you’re yelling at the TV when the ref makes a bad call or one of your work teammates makes a mistake.

When you do have to make an appearance at the office, you’ll find plenty of room in the dry bathroom to get ready. The closet next to the queen-size bed gives you plenty of space to hang those two suitable office outfits you need.

Travel Trailer With a Full Desk: KZ Connect 292RDK

The 2020 KZ Connect offers an RV office area - Photo: KZ

  • Length: 32.3 Feet
  • GVWR: 9,175 Pounds
  • Tanks: F- 45 Gallons/ Gr- 64 Gallons/ B- 32 Gallons

When you think of travel trailers with computer desks, which brands immediately come to mind? Did you ever consider KZ? Since 1972, KZ has built its reputation as a quality RV manufacturer. Many favor their brand because their products favor those that enjoy outdoor sports. Many of their interior components have a cabin-like look and weatherproof treatments to keep moisture and other contaminants from ruining the RV.

Full-time RVers that need to stay on location for extended periods may want to consider the KZ Connect 292RDK. It doesn’t offer an off-road package, but it does sport a full-size desk in the unit’s rear, a large closet pantry, a king-size bed, and a full kitchen with an island. Wildlife photojournalists, nature writers, and other outdoor-focused workers will find this Connect travel trailer a perfect space to work and rest at the end of the day.

If your work requires you to venture out early, you can prepare your morning meal in the RV’s outdoor kitchen. You need your camera for your work, but leaving without a thermos full of coffee is ridiculous. Who can work without the “sweet nectar of life?”

When you get back to the RV, the entry door leads straight into the large dry bathroom. You can strip off your dirty laundry and scrub off whatever you got on you that day. Afterward, head to the rear living room to download the photos you shot that day. Once you’ve found your best shots and cleaned them up, you can send them to your editor. Maybe you’ll keep the one of the timber wolf giving you that insulting look.

Travel Trailer Hutch Desk: Highland Ridge Mesa Ridge 314RLS

  • Length: 35.3 Feet
  • GVWR: 13,250 Pounds
  • Tanks: F- 85 Gallons/ Gr- 97 Gallons/ B- 40 Gallons

If you’re looking for a pet-friendly fifth wheel with office space, the Mesa Ridge 314RLS has a mid-coach hutch desk that is wide enough for your laptop. Bloggers who don’t need a lot of room can write about the fantastic adventures they’re having with their pets as they cruise the highways of America.

The desk shares its space with the kitchen and is close to the entry door. Above the desk is overhead cabinetry, and the closet panty is next to it. While office workers have to walk down the hall to get their favorite drink or snack, your break room is right there (although you may have four-legged subordinates looking for their bacon-flavored snacks too).

If your blog topic’s inspiration comes from the mess your dog made, the fifth wheel comes with a separate closet for a stackable washer and dryer. Even if your boondocking, the 97-gallon grey water tank has plenty of room to hold the wastewater from the washer and “operation clean dog” from the shower.

While you’re blogging away, your spouse can continue their work in the living room. A lift top coffee table or free standing computer workstation will fit well in the double slideout space. When it’s time to take the dogs out, a few rounds of roshambo should help you determine who’s taking an unscheduled break.

Bunkhouse Two-Person Dinette: Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS

Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS has room for an RV office - Photo: Jayco

  • Length: 37.10 Feet
  • GVWR: 10,950 Pounds
  • Sleep: 10 People
  • Tanks: F- 80 Gallons/ Gr- 39 Gallons/ B- 39 Gallons

The creation of bunkhouse floorplans advanced family RVing to a whole new level. Previously, while mom and dad could simply get up and prepare for the day, kids had to convert their sleeping space back to the dinette or sofa for daytime use. Bunkhouses solved two problems: they allowed kids to have their own space and kept the noise at the coach’s opposite side.

Like in this Jayco , RV manufacturers went a step further by asking, “why can’t bunkhouses have other furniture pieces besides beds?” The introduction of the two-person dinette became homework central for homeschooling kids that live the full-time lifestyle.

Bunkhouse sections give you a space to separate yourself from the rest of the travel trailer or fifth wheel. There’s plenty of storage to hold all of your peripherals and a place to mount a TV or monitor. If you have one or two children, they can use the top bunks at night without disturbing your desk (hopefully). The bunk above the desk does fold up for added headroom. Creative RVers came up with other uses for bunkhouses concerning RV desk ideas. Those that don’t need all of the sleeping space remove the off-door side bunks and install a DIY RV desk in a configuration ideal for their needs. If this is something you’d like to look into, check out Do It Yourself RV for ideas and RV construction issues, you need to know ahead of time.

Mid-Bunk RV Office Room: Forest River Cedar Creek 3770F

  • Length: 40.8 Feet
  • GVWR: 16,170 Pounds
  • Sleep: 4 People
  • Tanks: F- 57 Gallons/ Gr- 82 Gallons/ B- 41 Gallons

Call it your man-cave, she-shed, or even your executive office with a view. Mid-coach bunk rooms can be your ultimate office space complete with everything you need (including that 45-inch LED TV…I mean computer monitor). Most have convertible sofas and fold down bunks for additional sleeping, but the cabinet system has a flat surface that does bow out for RV office workspace.

If you want a fifth wheel with office space, the Cedar Creek 3770F by Forest River should be on your shortlist. The full-size desk takes up the full length of the slideout in the room. The opposite interior wall has a cabinet and wardrobe to store your equipment.

The desk also acts as a twin-size bunk that comes with a foam mattress for any guests visiting. Before you perform an impression of Gandolf the Grey, there’s a foldout sofa against the rear wall in the living room. As you’re video conferencing with your boss or others, you may catch yourself wandering off. The big picture window above the desk gives you the best views wherever you are. Sometimes the most challenging part about working from your RV can be staying focused when it’s time to work.

An Airstream With an RV Office: Interstate 24GT

  • Chassis: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 Extended
  • Engine: Mercedes 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel- 188 hp @ 325 lb./ft.
  • Length: 24.6 Feet
  • GVWR: 11,030 Pounds
  • Sleep: 2 People
  • Tanks: F- 27 Gallons/ Gr- 21 Gallons/ B- 13 Gallons

The highway gives you a lot of time to think. While you’re paying attention to the road, your mind may come up with solutions you’ve been trying to figure out or hit you with those “aha moments” you didn’t realize you wanted. It’s moments like this where you want to find a safe place to pull over and write them down before you lose them.

The Class B Interstate 24GT by Airstream solves that problem. Once you’re parked safely, you can spin the driver’s seat around and grab your laptop from the overhead cabinet, and quickly set up the RV computer workstation behind you. You can adjust the small table to the best level and use the coach’s LED TV as a computer monitor. With a few quick changes, you can input your hot idea before it fizzles out.

Once you have everything put back together, return everything to travel mode and head back out. Later in the day, you can take your time hooking up the utilities and making dinner on the mid-coach kitchenette. While your partner is ready to call it a night on the convertible king-size bed in the back, you can open up your office space again to continue working.

As you work, you can lean the chair’s back into an angle more suitable since you have the seat positioned away from the steering wheel. Make sure you set the alarm for yourself, or you could wind up falling asleep in your chair again.

Motorhome Co-Pilot Workspace: Newmar Bay Star Sport 2702

Interior of the 2021 Newmar Bay Star Sport - Photo: Newmar

  • Chassis: Ford F-53 Chassis
  • Engine: Ford 7.3L V8 Godzilla Gas- 350 hp @ 468 lb./ft.
  • Length: 27.11 Feet
  • GVWR: 20,500 Pounds
  • Sleep: 8 People (with optional drop-down front bunk)
  • Tanks: F- 75 Gallons/ Gr- 60 Gallons/ B- 40 Gallons

For years, many Class A motorhomes have had RV computer setups in the co-pilot seats. It could be a variation of a slide out tray or a fold-out side table like the Newmar Bay Star 2702. Today’s Class A’s with office space up front come wired with 110v and USB outlets making the limits of computer batteries a non-issue. Once you’re parked, the pedestal tables that stand between the pilot seats add surface space.

Class A motorhomes in the Neo-Classic Era (1990-2007) that had wide dashboards and overhead cabinets gave home workers on the road plenty of space to spread out. One DIYer brought his co-pilot motorhome office space to the next level with a TV mount and an aluminum mesh shelf above the sliding shelf.

Using desktop accessories to create a second office space in Class A motorhomes under 30 feet is possible by utilizing the dinette or portable desks in front of the sofa. If you want to be comfortable, using swing arms attached to the cabinetry around the bed is a consideration. Of course, there’s always the danger of falling asleep.

Dinette With Computer Workstation: Tiffin Allegro Red 37PA

  • Chassis: Freightliner XC Chassis
  • Engine: Cummins 6.7L Inline 6 ISB Turbo Diesel- 360 hp @ 800 lb./ft.
  • Length: 39 Feet
  • GVWR: 33,400 Pounds
  • Sleep: 6 People (with optional drop-down front bunk)
  • Tanks: F- 90 Gallons/ Gr- 70 Gallons/ B- 50 Gallons

If you’re looking for a luxury RV with office space, we’ll point you to Red Bay, Alabama. Tiffin has been a family-owned operation for decades. Now that they’ve joined the Thor Industries Family, you’ll find the same excellent quality the family has offered their customers, with Thor’s innovations and resources behind them.

Tiffin offers three different dinette options. On the 37PA floorplan, the dinette sits on the door side behind the co-pilot seat. Tiffin’s dinette workstation is unique to their brand. If you turn the freestanding chairs to face the sidewall, one side has a drawer and two cabinet doors. On the other side of the table are three evenly sized cabinets.

When you open the cabinet doors, there’s a pullout tray that’ll fit a computer tower. Above the doors is a fold-down panel that houses a slideout tray for a keyboard and mouse. The shelf above the cabinetry has plenty of space for your computer monitor. The dining table gives you plenty of room to spread out all of your work papers or other equipment. It makes for a great RV office area.

The Tiffin's dinette size and proximity to the TV make it ideal for an RV office space.

On the opposite wall rests the sofa or L-shaped sofa. The L-shaped version comes with a coffee table. Since the coffee table is freestanding, replacing it with a lift-top coffee table should be an issue. One of you have your side of the RV to work, and your partner has theirs. With dual slides, neither one of you should distract the other.

Motorhome bunkhouses created a lot of new opportunities for Class A motorhomes. When the twin bunk beds came out, RV manufacturers made the space convertible. If you didn’t need the sleeping space, it could convert to additional closet space, general storage, or a luxury dog bed for that four-legged child that doesn’t grow up and moves to the other side of the country (we’re not bitter).

Winnebago was the first to evolve the space by converting the RV bunkhouse to an office in the Forza 38D. The full-length two-person desk comes with a set of three drawers that separate the leg wells and a foam mattress so the desk surface can transform into a twin bunk.

The diesel Class A motorhome also comes with a front dropdown bunk, so you can have guests stay over without having to give up your desk. The two-person sofa or optional theatre seats come with laptop-sized tables if your traveling partner needs more separation to work.

The Forza 38D is a motorhome with two full baths, so if the two of you have to get ready for a presentation or a sales day, neither one of you has to wait for the other. The ten-gallon water heater should supply both of you with plenty of hot water.

Take a Test Run With Your New Office Space

By 2028, a study projected that over 90 million people will work as freelancers. That doesn’t include home worker employees. As the nature of work changes from on-site to off-site, we’re sure to see the RV industry adapt to new floorplans that include a dedicated RV office space.

Meanwhile, if your plans include hitting the road on a full-time basis and bringing your career with you, check out these and other RVs firsthand by renting first. Tips for Working from an RV Office

If you are planning to work remotely from one of these RVs with office space, there are several ways to create a professional mobile working environment.

Office space inside an RV

Block out the Noise

RV campgrounds are often filled with the noise of children playing, cars driving by and dogs barking. These distractions can make it more difficult to focus on your work.

A pair of noise-canceling headphones with a microphone can help block out the noise for both you and your clients. Also, request a campsite away from noisy areas, such as the pool and playground.

Stay Connected

An RV with office space won’t help you much if you do not have a stable internet connection. Currently cellular hotspot plans and Starlink satellite internet are the most reliable RV internet solutions.

See our complete guide to RV internet for more details.

Manage Work/Life Balance

Although your life of travel will be awesome, working a full time job limits the time you have to explore. Travel slow and stay in new places multiple weekends to make the most of your adventure and avoid burnout.

You can also utilize time zone differences to increase the hours of daylight available for leisure time. For example, if you travel on the west coast and work on east coast hours, you will be off work by 2 or 3pm each day.

The Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Office travel trailer targets remote workers who want a portable work-life balance.

If 2020 showed us anything, it’s that many jobs can be done from almost anywhere. Classrooms went remote. Offices found a new workspace through Zoom. And workers rapidly evolved to meet the needs of a post-COVID-19 workforce.

We all hope the pandemic will end soon. And when it does, we can keep some of our remote-working habits for the future. At least, RV-maker Airstream is banking on plenty of customers doing so with its latest creation. The home on wheels is complete with office space, wherever you park it.

Meet the Flying Cloud 30FB Office travel trailer, an RV for the wandering worker.

Flying Cloud 30FB: Home Office

Spurred by the shifting travel landscape during the pandemic, and feedback from owners already working from the comfort of their RV, Airstream redesigned the rear corner of its popular Flying Cloud 30FB Corner Bunk travel trailer. It replaced the sleeping area with a generously sized, work-from-anywhere office space.

2021 Flying Cloud 30 Office Seattle Mist Office

The dedicated workspace includes a comfortable office chair that slides into a recessed groove in the edge of the desk, giving owners the freedom to easily convert the space into a sleeping or relaxing area for one.

Sliding drawers and storage cubbies provide organization, while a privacy divider and blackout curtains provide a measure of privacy while making video calls on the road.

“The pandemic has permanently changed the traditional work landscape, and we’re thrilled to offer a travel trailer that meets the needs of our times without compromise,” said Bob Wheeler, Airstream CEO.

“Airstream has always provided the freedom of a mobile living, playing, and working space, but the Flying Cloud 30FB Office takes that promise to the next level, with flexibility and comfort in a design inspired by real-world experience.”

Travel Trailer First, Office Second

airstream office trailer layout

The Flying Cloud 30FB Office retains the amenities and comforts that make it one of the most popular travel trailers in Airstream’s lineup. Even with the opposite sleeping area converted into an “office,” it sleeps up to six on its queen bed, bench, and convertible dinette. And it has a full bathroom.

Three windows give the office space a nearly panoramic view. But if you need to focus or host a video call, blackout curtains allow you to control or eliminate outside light. Standard options like Airstream Connected are pre-wired in for easy bundling of dealer-installed upgrades, like Airstream’s Solar Package.

2021 Flying Cloud 30 Office

In addition to standard Flying Cloud features, the 30FB Office floor plan includes the following improvements:

  • Dedicated desk with sliding drawer storage and additional storage cubbies
  • Comfortable office chair secured with a strap during travel
  • Several USB ports located throughout the desk area
  • Pop-up USB/AC outlet supported by a 1,000W power inverter
  • Pull-out table that slides out of sight when not in use
  • Access to the satellite TV/HDMI outlets from the onboard Blu-ray DVD player
  • Privacy divider
  • Two desk grommets for organizing cables or mounting monitors
  • Overhead storage cabinets with dry-erase surfaces and under-mount LED lights
  • Three windows with blackout curtains

The Flying Cloud 30FB Office has a base weight of 6,757 pounds and a max trailer capacity (GVWR) of 8,800 pounds. That puts it squarely in the towing range of many SUVs and trucks . It has an MSRP of $107,500.

Airstream dealers around the country are now taking orders and will begin receiving inventory in the coming weeks.

It might be difficult to find a floor plan that meets the needs of travelers who want to take to the road and somehow require a specialized workplace where they can make a living possible. Many people think of RVing as a way to get away from work. Yet, with the increased number of digital travelers and remote workers in a modern environment, an RV office has become vital. Because remodeling a place can be expensive and time-consuming, here are seven RVs that already have an RV office prepared for you. Let us investigate!

What Is an RV Office?

What Is an RV Office?

A recreational vehicle office is akin to a home office. It’s a specialized workspace that doesn’t need to be modified on a daily basis.

It can be aggravating to have to unpack work tools every day and pack them back up each night. Because some travelers must use the dining table as their RV workspace, they must pack up multiple times during the day for their household to have meals. Yet, possessing an RV office involves having a distinct place where the desktop computer can be left up, files may be stored in a drawer, and noise is kept to a minimum.

Benefits of Having RV Office Space Built-In

Because an RV office is built-in, no refurbishments are required. It can be enjoyable and thrilling for some individuals to plan and carry out a complete renovation. But, for several individuals, remodeling is both exhausting and prohibitively expensive. These floorplans with RV office space offer travelers back their time.

Also, there are no weight restrictions. Each time you conduct a restoration project, you must evaluate how much mass you are removing and adding. Slides can only support a limited amount of weight. Weight ratings are assigned to entire camps. Weight might be a concern when you start changing things up.

Disadvantages to Built-In RV Office Spaces

Although purchasing a camper with an RV office area is beneficial, there are a handful of drawbacks. For starters, you’re tied with the RV office that the manufacturer set up. Perhaps it isn’t at your chosen location, or you dislike the layout. You may have to remodel them again, or you may have to accept the area as-is. Two built-in RV work spaces indicate that the builders eliminated something else, or you may have to purchase a longer RV than you intended.

When something is placed, another item is removed to keep the space minimal. This might be additional pantry space or a kid’s bunkroom. If the developer has lengthened the RV to accommodate an office, your tow automobile may be unable to draw it. You may also wish to stay under a certain size to gain access to more campgrounds.

10 Best RVs With Dedicated Office Space for Remote Work

Remote workers on the road must have a dedicated RV workspace established in their campervan or travel trailer. Some RVs include specific office rooms, whereas others make it simple to build one up on your own. If you’re not sure where to begin, take a look at these 10 best RVs for remote employees on the road, each of which has an ideal office area for one, two, or three individuals.

Wally Byam, the founder of Airstrea

Their approach has recently shifted from a backwoods cabin atmosphere to the ever-popular farmhouse vintage style. The knotty pine floors plus two-toned cabinetry are enough to please even the most discerning interior decorator TV personalities.

Bunkhouses are ideal for folks who work on the road. There are numerous creative ways to use the bunk room as an office area. The bunkhouse of the Heartland Trail Runner 30RBK readily serves as an office as well. The private bunkhouse is situated at the rear of the coach and contains a dinette that doubles as a desk. The overhead bunk swings up to give you more headroom while working.

Trail Runner 30RBK - Heartland RVs

A tiny entertainment center that can be adapted for office supplies provides extra storage. DIYers can convert the open storage capacity into a third RV desk by adding an extension that is appropriate for a keyboard. This 35-foot camper is divided into three sections. Your workplace area will be quiet and distraction-free because of the confidentiality of the doors and the separation between the bunkroom/office and the remainder of the living space. The bunkhouse effortlessly converts from a workplace to a sleeping room during the day. The Heartland Trail Runner is an excellent choice for RVing families with work-from-home requirements.

Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS

  • Length: 37.10
  • GVWR: 10,950 lbs.
  • CCC: 2,350 lbs.
  • Sleep: 5-12

Jayco Jay Flight 33RBTS

The Jay Flight 33RBTS as well as its sister coach, the 324BDS, are Jayco’s greatest travel trailers featuring office space. With the TV outlet and coax cable connector easily positioned near the dinette, we believe the 33RBTS is the superior choice for computer connectivity. The bunkhouse dinette can simply be used as a workspace. If you want a more traditional workplace, you might remove the back dinette and substitute it with your preferred desk. If you desire a proper desk, the 324BDS is also an option to consider. The TV and internet connections are on the camp side, which is less handy for your workspace. Having said that, the J-cube sofas in the bunkhouse are simple to remove, regardless of the most inexperienced DIYer.

2020 Jay Flight - 33RBTS | Jayco, Inc

Any of these Jaycos is a great option for a travel trailer with perfect office space. The one you favor is entirely subjective. Prior to the RV office space revolution, the bunkhouse dinette fell out of favor in the mid and late 1990s. Yet, Jayco Jay Flight saw fit to maintain the feature in certain of their lineups. Hence, if you come across a used model with a bunkhouse dinette, seize the opportunity before it’s gone.

2022 Forest River Wildwood X-Lite Midwest 273QBXL

Although Forest River does not include built-in desks, the X-Lite 273QBXL is one of the best travel trailers featuring office space on the market. This is because the bunkhouse may be simply converted into office space. The bunkroom’s tall closet cabinet is ideal for a standing workstation. If you prefer a traditional workstation, the Jiffy Sofa may be quickly removed and replaced with a desk of your choice.

X-Lite

With the bunkroom/office, the X-Lite is among the few travel trailers below 8,000 pounds that provides this level of privacy. The track tie-down system particularly enables you to hold anything from a filing system to a four-wheeler, which will also appeal to you. The Valor 42V13 is a worthwhile investment for people who require a separate space for an RV work area that can also serve as a garage.

Keystone Outback Ultra-Lite 240URS

  • UVW: 5,491 lbs.
  • Tongue Weight: 590 lbs.
  • Length: 28.6 ft.
  • GVWR: 7,590 lbs.
  • CCC: 2,099 lbs.

The Keystone Outback Ultra Lite 240URS is yet another travel trailer below 30 feet featuring office space, and it has a pretty nice layout thanks to the rear slide-out for the host’s bedroom area. We appreciate how open and airy this unique floor layout feels. This Keystone Outback is especially unusual in that the front garage contains two twin bunk beds instead of a drop-down queen. The garage space in the front is ideal for carrying large luggage since it reduces travel trailer sway by distributing more load on the trailer’s tongue.

The front cargo area can also be simply converted into an RV office space. To transport office supplies in and out, use the huge ramp. This small and lightweight toy hauler lets you make use of your living space in a variety of ways.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is a large travel trailer required for workplace space.

Many RVers may believe that in order to commit room to an office, they need a huge travel trailer. But, when considering how to include office space into your travel trailer, it’s vital to look beyond the box.

If your RV is equipped with a desk, you’re one step ahead. If you want to convert a travel trailer into an office, contemplate space-saving options like standing workstations or wall-mounted murphy tables.

Because people can’t sleep as well as work at the same time, converting a bedroom into an RV office is another excellent choice. Even the smallest travel trailers can accommodate an RV office area in a variety of ways.

Is a Toy Hauler Garage a Good Place to Work?

Toy hauler carports have always fascinated RV DIYers as spacious, open, yet independent living spaces. These garages are wonderful blank slates from which to build your ideal RV office area.

Since many toy hauler garages include HappiJac sofas, they are particularly suitable for office adaptations. The sofas are simply removed, and the brackets that remain serve as great desktop supports.

Ramps as well as D-ring tie-down brackets are also included in toy hauler garages. There is no better place to move in and protect heavy work furnishings and machinery. A door separates most RV toy hauler garages from the remainder of the travel trailer. This type of mobile trailer office area will be free of interruptions.

Can You Simply Work From Your Dinette?

One could set up a laptop at the dinette and function from that, but it’s not ideal. The dinette spaces are small. There won’t just be room for all of your computer devices unless you utilize a laptop PC or computer monitor.

Dinettes are also commonly found in the center of every camper’s living space. As a result, they are one of the noisiest and most stressful work environments.

If you and your loved one simultaneously work from the road, a dinette will almost probably not provide adequate space or privacy. As you might expect, noise and privacy issues grow dramatically with children.

To make unnecessary wrist injuries, utilize an ergonomic laptop stand as well as other supports. Understand that the dinette is intended for eating, not functioning.

While many campers choose the outdoors to somehow get out of the workplace and off of the display screens, emails, and messages, others must carry their job with them.

They could very well be full-time travelers or individuals looking to travel for several weeks at a time. A built-in RV office is a great convenience. It aids in storage options and reduces the time-consuming task of packing up equipment every day.

Do you travel with your work? Do you have a specific RV office? The design is intended for eating rather than working. If you have been looking for an RV where you can take all you office supplies to, then hopefully, we have provided some few picks and options that are well-suited to your preference.

25 Mobile Office Set-Ups to Inspire You to RV Full-Time

This post may contain affiliate links. See our affiliate disclaimer here .

I’m a sucker for a good mobile office setup. After traveling full-time for nearly a decade and running a business remotely the whole time, I think I’ve worked from any possible surface. Mostly because 99% of RVs don’t come equipped with a desk or any space resembling a good workstation.

Shout out to all of you entrepreneurs who are taking conference calls at the RV park picnic table!

If you want a mobile office in your RV, you have to get creative, learn how to do a little renovating , and maximize your square footage.

If you’re not a DIY person, a great resource for finding a camper with a desk built-in is RenovatedRVsforSale.com . You’ll find already renovated RVs, many of which already have desks added (like the one below)!

travel trailer with office desk

As we all make do with creating an office space in our home on wheels, we’ve found a few essential items that make the situation’s ergonomics a whole lot better.

Tools & Gear for Creating Your Own RV Mobile Office

Laptop stand.

Save your neck the literal headache.

This is Heath’s favorite laptop stand (we’ve also used this cheaper but bulkier one that is slightly harder to travel with), and he has used it for years. If you are slouching over your laptop, complaining about neck and shoulder pain, and need an fast solution, this is it.

This stand has traveled to multiple countries by plane and RV. Highly recommend. You will need even more gear if you go with a stand, though.

Wireless Mouse

Some people hate trackpads. Or they hate Bluetooth mouses, which can be a pain to connect. Or they hate using a mouse with a cord like it’s 2003.

This USB mouse checks all the boxes (and is available in many colors). We’ve used this mouse for years after our Apple mouse kept giving us trouble. It’s under $20 and super reliable. If you use a stand, you’ll need a mouse unless you want to awkwardly navigate on your trackpad while it’s in the air.

Wireless Keyboard

We use the Magic Keyboard that came with our iMac. It’s small, it’s rechargeable, it’s light and easy to toss into a backpack.

But it’s nearly $100.

You can find  much cheaper keyboards on Amazon , and I recommend any small, light keyboard that works via Bluetooth so you can easily travel with it.

External Monitor

This is the piece of equipment you’ll see most people below adding to their RVs.

We’ve traveled with our iMac in both of our Winnebagos—laying the heavy monitor on the bed during travel for safety. But for most, a lightweight and mountable external monitor is a better option.

Plus, you can simply unhook your laptop and head to a coffee shop if you want to get out of the rig. That is not so easy with a desktop computer! External monitors are great for running multiple screens simultaneously and keeping your workspace a little more comfortable for your body.

Other recommendations:

Standing Desk : We used a piano stand and a large cutting board as a makeshift standing desk for a while. It worked great, though it was a bit wobbly. If you ask me, standing desks are crazily overpriced, but you can find collapsible laptop stands for musicians on Amazon  for a quarter of the price.

Airpods :  Heath has raved about Airpods for years, and I’m now on board. Mine aren’t noise-canceling, but the fact that whatever I’m listening to pauses as soon as I remove an Airpod is SO BRILLIANT. And handy.

Portable Table : If the couch if your best workspace, we loved this little table! It scoots under the couch easily and is big enough to host your laptop and lunch (clearly speaking from experience here.) The height is adjustable, but it doesn’t get tall enough to be used as a standing desk.

Those are the biggest ways we’ve seen RVers adapt their workspace to be a little friendly to the body and the small space. It’s a challenge that all RV entrepreneurs love to tackle, so we asked our Facebook group to share their mobile office set-ups to inspire you.

Below are our top 25 picks, ranging from stand-up desks to custom build-outs to folding tables and couches. There’s no one way to set up a desk in an RV, and these pioneers prove it!

Heath, the king of many offices

Heath cracks me up because he has made so many different mobile office setups in our Winnebago! There’s the removal round table in the front of the rig.

Then there’s the standing desk we made, the fold-out desk built into the Winnebago in front of the passenger seat, the dinette, and, of course, a picnic table!

Back in our Winnebago Brave, Heath would use all five of these desk setups on any given day because he can’t sit still. He likes to bounce around.

mobile office desk setup winnebago forza

This year we moved into a 2020 Winnebago Forza 38D, which has a dual desk setup that has been a game-changer. As I said, 99% of RVs don’t have desk space. We chose this RV because it falls in that one percent. I love having that separation between a workspace and the rest of the house. Plus, having any space at all that is dedicated solely to being an office is pure luxury.

Now that you’ve got the desk, you only need a job you can work from anywhere !

Aren’t they amazing?? I’ve got serious office envy over here.

Those are some great setups. Almost makes you want to work – almost.

Great post. I love “looking” inside peoples campers. We’re finally taking our camper out next week. I’ll post a picture of our office setup while we’re out.

Haha yes sometimes the best part of RV parks is getting to peek inside everyone else’s rigs!

Keepin’ it real… Awesome Post!

These pics are great!! I really love a whole bunch of them. I adore about everything from Mountain Modern Life. Such fantastic style. You are a cute mess at least. Thanks for a great posts.

Hahaha, well thank you 😂 but yes Mountain Modern Life looks gorgeous!

Very nice pictures! The beauty of RVing is that it takes you into the nature. So just having a laptop and a folding chair is usually all what needed for a true mobile office.

The complicated set ups are usually counter productive, as one mentioned below ” it almost makes you want to work” and inside.

Keep it simple – that’s why we are RVing…

Very true! But I think most of us want to and enjoy working in our RVs because it allows us to go more places and get out into nature more often!

Awesome pics! We pulled out the recliner and installed a big deal made out of a scrap piece of butcher block. It’s right in front of a big window. Awesome-sauce!

Thanks for the inspiration! I was afraid I’d have to give up my beloved DXRacer chair when we get our 5th wheel, but I see others on wheels. I’d be curious how they secure their rolling chairs…

Bungee cords! Or tossing them on the bed 🙂

Thanks for the tip!

Love the inspiration and it’s fun to see some of my favorite mobile office spaces in this post, including ours, woo-hoo! The only downside to our living room office is that we have to spend two minutes putting it away or setting it up, which means on my super lazy days I just work at the pop-up desk in the bedroom, haha.

Haha it’s funny how big of a difference those two minutes make! I have definitely spent many mornings with my laptop in bed because that’s just SO much easier!

I’m surprised there weren’t any bunk removals. That’s the direction we are leaning. But have till spring to figure it out.

Well there’s a couple school buses in there, so there were a few that started out with empty buses and built out their whole layout!

Great office ideas, thanks for compiling and sharing!

Thanks Shane! 🙂

Just stumbled on this blog because I Googled “why don’t RVs have office space?” As a video editor I need to set up and LEAVE IT…until I move again 🙂 I wish I just used a laptop…but my office setup will be a little more complicated. Thank you SO MUCH for this post and the inspiration. I’m just beginning my journey of research to see if this is indeed something I could do. I hope RV designers take this trend seriously and actually start designing workspaces! RVs aren’t just for the retired anymore. Thanks again for your blog! Great information! Happy travels!

Hey Wendi! I do video editing on the road as well and just takeover our dinette table with a desktop computer. When we’re driving, we lay it down on the bed so it’s protected. 🙂 So glad you enjoyed the post! We actually had Winnebago come out to our conference last month and they interviewed entrepreneurs on how to integrate workspace into future RVs. It will be cool to see what they come up with!

That’s amazing and such great news!! Thanks so much for the tip! I will remember that. I’m so happy I found your blog! Thanks again!

13 Workspaces to Inspire Digital Nomads: Mobile Office Van & RV Workspaces

When you’re working on the go, it’s important to have a workspace that is both comfortable and inspiring. However, digital nomads are used to working in all kinds of spaces: kitchen tables, the front seat of a car, picnic tables, and camp chairs. If you’re working from the road full-time, you may want to set up a designated workspace. That’s why we’ve put together a list of 13 RV and mobile office van setups to inspire you to work and travel.

RVs With Mobile Offices

Creating a mobile office in an RV is increasingly popular as remote work becomes more prevalent. Manufacturers are starting to build designated workspaces into some new RV models, and many RVers are renovating their home on wheels to include desks. Full-time digital nomads want a mobile office in their RV, but vacationing RVers are also seeking capabilities to work on the road.

Digital nomads create built-in RV workspaces in the bedroom, kitchen, living, and dining areas. Others are retrofitting bunk areas to create a private RV office. Here are some RV workspaces ideas for a wide range of digital nomad and remote jobs:

RV Workspaces Ideas By @stairsuphandlein

For Jen and Eric Reinhart ( @stairsuphandlein ), an RV with an office was a must, and they were lucky to find one that already included a desk.

Jen and Eric share their experience purchasing an RV with an office: “ Unless you are moving into a toy hauler or something larger with a bunkhouse or second bedroom, [an office] can be difficult to find without renovating and building your own, so the fact that our current rig actually came with a desk space built in was a plus.”

“Not only did it have the built-in desk, but it was positioned at the back of the camper with storage space in surrounding cabinets and drawers, complete with a large window that provides plenty of natural sunlight (and natural Zoom lighting, if I’m being honest).”

They also recommend buying a tabletop flexible-height laptop stand and investing in a comfortable chair to make your workspace more comfortable.

@carpediemcampers' Digital Nomad Office in a Toyhauler

Amy of @carpediemcampers teaches P.E. online from her toyhauler trailer. Converting the garage at the back of the trailer into the office gives her the space to complete office tasks and conduct virtual classes with an epic view.

Amy says her RV office allows her to have a job she loves: “I am grateful that my teaching job came full-circle. I now have a job I love, working with kids in a new, challenging, and fulfilling way while continuing to live the digital nomad lifestyle.”

@_TheHoneyWagon's RV With An Office In Their Fifth Wheel

RVers will often renovate their home and workspaces to make their home on wheels more comfortable and specific to their style. Julia and Charlie ( @_TheHoneyWagon ) are no strangers to a renovation project; this was their second fifth wheel makeover. They shared their biggest challenge in creating this warm and inviting RV office:

“…this newer 5th wheel was only three years old when it came to us, so most of the updates were cosmetic. All of our updates were done working on the weekends over a course of only 4 months… The biggest challenge was replacing and finding furniture that fit my tastes, fit the space and fit the weight limit. It was a tough task to find a desk comfortable enough to spend 40 hours a week at, but was also compact, stylish and unique.”

@kreativefreedom's Mobile Music Studio

If you have a career that requires a specific workspace setup or equipment, it really is possible inside an RV. Chris and Christi ( @kreativefreedom ) built a music studio inside their 26’ Fleetwood Jamboree Class C RV to support their jobs as creative DJs and music producers. They shared the tech behind their minimalistic studio:

“The cornerstone of our creative music space was made possible thanks to today’s technology. Everything is ‘in the box.’ In other words, all sounds are emulated through computers or gear with a much smaller footprint. Helping us achieve this is the UAD Universal Apollo Twin, which is our audio interface. This amazing piece of gear allows us to record, track and even emulate those legendary physical machines such as various reverbs, pre-amps, and delays which is important for the right sound for our tracks.”

“A MacBook Pro powers everything up as it’s also linked to a 32” Ultra-Wide LCD monitor on a monitor lift for a comfortable experience. Our studio monitors are KRK Rokit 5’s, which have given us fantastic bass response in the RV. Finally, to round it all out, we added a few multi-use controllers such as the Arturia MiniLab and the Native Instruments Maschine for grooves and rhythm sections. We used to be in love with buying more and more gear. Now, we’re in love with our streamlined studio.”

@KeithAndRaini's RV Slide Out Desk For Two

An RV slide out creates additional space that can be used for work. Keith and Raini ( @KeithAndRaini ) share their RV workspace, which allows them to work side by side:

“Working on the road has given us a very unique opportunity to create a productive yet cozy space in our RV. We built a desk for two in the nook of our large slide-out, where we can both sit and enjoy the window view while working; and, bonus, all we have to do is swivel around in our computer chairs and BAM! We are instantly in our kitchen!”

@gills_on_wheels Creates a RV Classroom

Patty Gill ( @gills_on_wheels ) set up a classroom in her RV to teach students virtually. She doesn’t let her small space prevent her from setting up a backdrop and props to make her classes fun and effective for her students.

Patty told us about a day in the life in her RV classroom: “ I usually teach 5-8 classes each morning with about 5 minutes between each class… It usually takes me about 20–30 minutes to make sure I have all my props set up for the next morning’s class. Then I grab my coffee, sit in my chair, and wait for the class to start…I am done around 7 a.m. and have the rest of the day to explore, hike, or go sightseeing.”

@thetasteforadventure's RV With an Office & a View

Jesse & Rachael Lyons ( @thetasteforadventure ) are digital nomads in a renovated fifth wheel. They specifically chose a fifth wheel layout with a big back window, so they could build mobile office in an RV that took advantage of the views in their campsites. They shared their simple renovation process:

“Our desk is simply a piece of wood placed and screwed into to the top of the electrical box and supported on the other side by two table legs. We love working in that back window. Our office view has been the ocean, desert, mountains, lakes, and forests.”

@the_renegade_ramblers Workshop on Wheels

Caleb Barnaby crafts jewelry while Crystal Davis plans their travel to art festivals. As @the_renegade_ramblers , they run their business from their Imagine travel trailer. To create on the road, they built a jewelry studio into their tiny home.

Caleb and Crystal told us, “one of the biggest challenges of living and creating in 128-square-feet is finding a place for a mobile studio. Since art is the main source of income to fuel our travels, the workbench is also the focal point of our living space. We completely removed the dinette and built a custom workbench in its place.”

“As most RVers know, small spaces must serve multiple purposes and that is no different with our workbench area. It’s a place to sit and eat our meals, it serves as shoe storage, additional counter surface, and houses all our jewelry-making supplies. This is where you can find Caleb on most days of the week – etching, sawing, hammering, riveting, soldering, creating.”

The Rootless Living Fifth Wheel Headquarters

The Rootless Living editors, Nikki Kirk and Demian Ross, produce the Rootless Living magazine and the Rootless Living podcast from their fifth wheel. They created two workspaces during the renovation of their fifth wheel.

“My office now allows me to have an actual workspace with a desk that has everything powered and equipment secure in drawers,” says Demian. “Most of my tech gear is charging while in their drawers as well as a computer monitor which is able to lower during travel days to keep it safe or when not in use. The monitor lift allowed me to not lose my view out my office window when I was not working.”

Easy set up was important, says Demian, “I went from a stressful 30-minute office set-up to a quick 5 minute set up or take down and everything is exactly where I left it. Nikki removed the dining room table, which we never sat at, and installed a desk that faces out the large window, giving her an awesome workspace and some of the best views.”

A Mobile Office For Van Living & Working

The very limited space in vans means digital nomads have to get creative to make mobile offices in vans that are multi-purpose and productive. These digital nomad workspaces will inspire you to live and work even tinier.

@roveandswig Create a Mobile Office Van in a Sprinter

Lisa and Chris Carter work full-time on the road. Chris works for a home goods manufacturer, while Lisa runs her own e-commerce business, roveandswig.com . They squeezed two mobile office spaces into their van.

“We’re traveling in our 2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4×4 170 WB High Roof that we self-converted from a cargo van into our dream home on wheels…We mostly work in our rig. We have two areas that function well for long hours on the laptop. Our passenger seat swivels 180 degrees, and a portion of our countertop can be extended as a desk surface. Chris takes all of his video meetings from there, which keeps his background consistent (a homemade windshield shade to prevent being backlit) and allows me to move around the rest of the van without photobombing his meetings. The other area is a bench at the foot of our bed. It’s not quite as ergonomic as the front work area, but it gets the job done. On nice days when I don’t have meetings or calls, I often work outside under some shade.”

Mobile Office Van Setup With an Outdoor Standing Desk By @thisCAVULife

Jack McCook ( @thisCAVULife ) wanted multiple workplace options in his Ram ProMaster 136” van. He configured five and a half work spots inside his van. He primarily works from the dinette, but his favorite mobile office van configuration allows him to enjoy the outdoors:

“…I had enough foresight to realize that working exclusively at the dinette would drive me crazy and probably make me resentful of the vanlife experience…I ultimately created five and a half workspace options while designing the van to be able to work while standing and sitting… My favorite desk option, however, is my outdoor standing desk. This one by far takes the cake. I installed a table that latches onto the interior of my cargo doors. When the weather is great, I can prop it up and work outside, using the bed or bench cushions as additional countertop space.”

Skoolie and Bus Conversions With Digital Nomad Workspaces

An advantage of building out a bus as a home, work, and travel vehicle is you have more flexibility for customization. These digital nomads took advantage of designing their own layouts to create mobile offices that inspire.

Multi-Purpose Desk By @redwhiteandbethune

When you have a family doing work and school on the road, you need to create spaces to accommodate everyone. One solution was building this pretty desk, with cheerful blue décor, floating shelves, and file cabinets.

Jenn of @redwhiteandbethune shared their motivation for building a desk into their bus: “ When des igning our bus for our family of 5, we knew we would need to have multiple workspaces. We have work, school, and creative time for 5 people; we couldn’t all work in the same space. We have a dedicated office space, Jenn’s makeup area doubles as an additional desk, and we made a custom cover to go over our steering wheel. With all of these areas, we can work, live, & play comfortably!”

Minimalist Mobile Workspace By @weliveonabus

Tina Wann and her family moved into a renovated school bus with the goal of living a more minimalist lifestyle. They built long, versatile counters into their home on wheels that can be used as a workspace, kitchen counter, and more.

The family says, “one of the things people most often say to us is that they could never live tiny.  They have too much stuff.  This year, I published an ebook that shows exactly how we manage to fit our entire life into 234 Square Feet.  It is available on our website weliveonabus.com .  My hope is that it makes this lifestyle a reality for someone who reads it.  We aren’t different from them.  We just woke up and pretended that we were one day away from living our dream of the nomadic bus life.”

Creative And Effective RV Desk Ideas

Anyone living the RV life full time can tell you that eventually you are going to need some rv desk ideas for a dedicated office space. Unfortunately, few travel trailers and RVs are designed with the home office in mind- a trend that is changing now that so many of us are out here living as digital nomads. However, until it comes standard with every RV home, you’ll need a little creativity to get your rv desk table ideas set up and ready to roll.

The first step is planning. Keep these factors in mind while you are surfing the internet for inspiration:

  • Function – What do you need to do? How do you need to do it?
  • Space – Small space or large RV? Does it need to be stowed to make room for other activities? Where can it fit?
  • Weight – Remember your set-up has to be able to roll down the road. Adding too much weight can damage your axels or transmission.
  • Mobilization – Caution things may shift in transit.

Now that you are in planning mode, let’s talk ideas.

Use The Design Of Your Rooms

Think about the design of the room you are going to be working in. This comes back to that function idea I mentioned. Ideally you are going to want an RV home office out of the flow of traffic where you can easily set up shop. If you are tight on space, that also means you are going to want ease of storage when the work day is done.

Some of your rooms might already have the ideal working space. You simply have to reimagine it a little. We talked to a fellow RVer who’s best office set up was a small storage tub that fit under the kitchen table. The table became her rv computer desk during the day. Then at night everything fit safely away in the tub. The only downfalls were she couldn’t leave her work out for the next day and she was too close to the snacks (that would NOT work for me!)

Make Use of the Bedroom

Even the smallest of bedrooms can be a work space. This can go beyond a lap tray and pillows. Try thinking outside the box to use all of your space efficiently. If you have a slide out, even better. That means you have more space to work with.

Mount It To The Wall

Sometimes a standard desk won’t fit. Consider using your walls to save space. Your options range from classic to artsy depending on your style. Sizes vary from about the size of a briefcase to full wall units.

For classic clean lines go with a floating desk like this folding unit from Amazon. This model folds up to lock (my preference) so that your office stuff is secured as you roll on down the road, plus it looks super cute.

Fold Down Desk

  • Wall mounted and fold up design.
  • Features multiple storage compartment.
  • Perfect for bedroom, living room, reading room, office or other place you want.

Check Latest Price

However, if you want a little more artistic flair, you can mount a hard-sided suitcase or briefcase. Make sure to support the base as some hinges might not hold up to the weight of your laptop.

Add to your space saving design by mounting your computer monitor or replacing that outdated tv with a smart tv. A couple of brackets with hooks placed under your wall mounted desk can add stability and give you a place to hang your computer bag. Look for ones with rounded edges to avoid catching your clothes if you have to shimmy by.

Office Desk set up in an RV

Don’t forget the folding chair or stool. If you have enough wall space, adding a couple eye hooks with bungie cords will help you secure the chairs to the wall rather than just leaning them in a corner. Otherwise look at the under the bed storage to see if there is room.

Put It Under The Bed

If you have room in your underbed storage, there are several collapsible desks to choose from. However, there are basically two design; folding and adjustable. Folding desks are designed to fold almost flat.  Think folding chair but in desk form. With an adjustable desk, the legs shrink down for storage.

Of these two designs, I prefer the folding desk over the adjustable height one. Other than the fact that you have to measure the adjustable height one to make sure that it fits under the bed, the folding desks are more lightweight and portable . This means you can easily move your office to a new location if you change your mind about being in the bedroom. It also makes it easier to pull out and flip around so you can sit on the edge of your bed rather than leave the bed up.

Folding Desk

  • This family desk created by a professional designer has a simple aesthetic
  • Very stable and can be used for many years.
  • Collapses quickly to store under the bed.

Either way you will have to have a plan for clearing them off at the end of the day for storage. Having a handy storage tub nearby to hold your office stuff can help keep you organized. Or go with a laptop bag if you really don’t have much more than a computer and a notebook like me.

Upgrade A Dresser

Many travel trailers come with built in dressers. Depending on the height and space there are a few options for converting it into a mobile office. Adding a flip out desk extension or converting the top drawer into a desktop are quick and easy redesigns you can do. Another idea is to go with a desk top computer stand. It can turn your dresser into a standing desk and still leave you room on top of your dresser for other office items. An added bonus to using a converted dresser is that you have the perfect way to stow your office when on the move.

Utilize The Front Seat As An RV Office

If you happen to be in a Class A or Class C rig, those front seats can make perfect desk chairs. They are cushioned, adjustable, and offer great lumbar support. So why not set up your mobile work space where you can utilize these bad boys.

travel trailer with office desk

Most passenger seats swivel around. Meaning you can use a TV tray or a portable bedside table as a desk. A table that folds out to a larger size can be placed between the two chairs for a shared workspace. If the driver side doesn’t swivel, consider buying a steering wheel desk. These options all offer easy storage. Plus, if you are going to be parked for a while, you can use the dashboard and center console to hold office supplies and files.

  • Can be mounted to steering, assistant seat and seat back.
  • Lightweight construction.

Head To The Bathroom

You are probably thinking the bathroom isn’t exactly on your list of RV office venues. However, when considering your space options, don’t rule it out. It might not be ideal if you have a small bathroom or you have a lot of people who need to use the facilities. On the other hand, some models have pass through bathrooms to get to the master bedroom. Not only do you have room to set up a portable desk, you have a door that locks.

Bunkroom RV Office Ideas

My neighbor has a 35’ travel trailer with a bunkroom in the back. Since it came with four bunks, but he only has three kids, he converted the space under one of the bunks into a trailer desk. He used a lightweight shelf and a set of bathroom cabinet drawers to create a double desk. The stools fit neatly under the desk at the end of the day. A few well-placed eye hooks and bungie cords keep them from sliding around during transit.

Of course, if you don’t need the extra bunks, you can consider converting the whole area into an RV office complete with desk and bookshelves. There are tons of ideas out there or draw up your own plans. You are only limited by size, weight and your imagination.  Or you could use a bunk as a standing workspace.

If you do go for the full remodel, give yourself plenty of time. It might be a small space but RV demolition is harder than it looks. They are not designed to come apart easily and if you rush it you could end up causing damage or creating leaks. You might also need to account for the metal frame and lack of anchor points when you go to secure your new office furniture. I once had to build a wood frame around inside the room before I could start adding furniture.

Toy Hauler Conversion

Toy haulers aren’t only great for bringing along your ATV’s. That big open space in the back is perfect for office conversions. Since they are designed to handle the weight, you can go for the more conventional office setup. Keep in mind that whatever you do it will have to hold up to the inevitable shifting that comes with being on the road.

rv desk area set up in an RV

If you still want to bring along a few toys, consider converting only half of the space or using wall mounted and flip down furniture. Keep in mind your weight distribution as too much weight to one side of the trailer can lead to big trouble on the road.

One thing to consider is adding a desk to your current layout to give you the office space you need. If you have the room, you might be able to get away with simply adding a small lightweight desk to keep from adding to your dry weight. However, most floorplans already use up the given space meaning you will need to consider removing some unwanted items.

Convert Space To Add Office Essentials

In many cases, your existing layout may not be enough, so you will need to look at converting space.

Pull Out The Unused Furniture

One way to keep from adding weight is to exchange it. Consider pulling out that old hide-a-bed, recliner, or dinette set and replacing it with an office system. This will keep your dry weight down while giving you the room you need to set up your rv desk ideas.

travel trailer with office desk

Pulling out that old smelly couch might also improve the air quality while you’re at it. Also, the floor underneath might not be what you are expecting. Now might be a time to put in that hardwood floor you were thinking about. Be creative with your RV setup ideas.

Can You Use Regular Furniture In An RV?

The simple answer to this is yes with the right design. You don’t have to use furniture specifically designed for RVs. In fact, most RV office ideas I’ve seen utilize standard furniture. This doesn’t mean to go for that solid maple executive desk, but a trip to your local Ikea or Home Depot might be in order.

Think repurpose or unique utilization while you are at it. I once came across a built-in work area that was made from a shelf and three sets of storage cubes as the base.

Try An RV Standing Desk

Installing a standing desk is another option. You can choose to build one in or opt for a portable version. I’ve seen a few hybrid versions where some of the office elements are mounted to the wall accompanied by a small standing desk underneath to save space.

travel trailer with office desk

Standing Workstation

  • Provides on-demand standing workstation on any table or counter
  • The top surface measures 31.5” x 15.7”, which maximizes space
  • Place on your existing desk, attach the keyboard tray, and start organizing your workstation.

Put in a Fold-Out Desk

To save floor space, put in a fold-out desk. Depending on how much wall space you have, you can either go with a pre-made table or DIY your own custom design. Options with built in storage that fold up are great for walls with no windows. Or you can go with a model that folds down to fit under a window.  Fold-out tables can also double as extra counter space or for dining.

Small Space Desks

When it comes to small spaces, custom built office setup may be the best way to go. Unless you have no carpentry skills. In that case, the next best thing is to keep the design simple like this two-tier computer desk. Shop around at second hand stores for surprise pieces with flair or go with a more modern desk designed for small space.

travel trailer with office desk

JSB Folding Desk

  • No assembly required- just un-fold and use.
  • Ideal desk for small space.
  • Modern appearance and simple design desk can fit well into any room.

Sometimes no matter what you do there is just no way to work with the space you have. Maybe your space is too small. Maybe your floorplan isn’t working for you. Or maybe you are like my neighbor with the three kids who simply has more people than workspace. Then it might be time to think outside of the RV for some other RV office ideas.

Invest In An Outdoor Room

If the weather permits, an outdoor room might be the way to go. They run from the basic pop-up screen room to the more durable attached awning with screen room combinations. Look for ones that are lightweight with easy set up. Most are semi-waterproof but pooling water can cause collapses or create leaks.

Helpful tip: Check the folded measurements before you buy. It doesn’t matter how easy it is to use if it won’t fit in your storage area.

travel trailer with office desk

Coleman Screenhouse

  • 90 square feet of shaded office space.
  • Screen walls keep the mosquitoes away.
  • Extending, 1-piece frame and telescoping poles for easy setup and teardown.

Consider A Second RV

That sounds crazy but hear me out. Depending on your current setup you could add another smaller RV or mobile office.  Ashley Logsdon of  Mama Says Namaste did this for several months, and found it worked quite well for her family. It gave her a quiet place to work without being constantly interrupted by family.

If you drive an RV, consider making your towed vehicle a trailer. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a camping trailer though it is possible if you have the towing capacity. An enclosed trailer will also work as an office space for your RV with a few upgrades. Some come complete with windows and air conditioning.

For those of you with a travel trailer, adding a camper shell to your tow vehicle is one possibility. The downside to that is the added weight . An alternative would be to invest in a truck bed tent. These usually take about a half hour to set up with two people. Add an indoor/outdoor carpet and some portable office furniture and you are working in your new office in less than an hour.

One thing to keep in mind with this option is that most campgrounds limit what you can set up. The standard seems to be one RV and one tent or screen room per spot. Check with the campground before you go to avoid extra charges or so you can reserve two spots.

Hide Out In The Truck

One other option is to turn the front seat of your car or truck into a mobile office. This is what the neighbor with three kids did. He works in sales so he needed quiet when he was on the phone. Since his truck was well insulated, it blocked out most of the noise. He turned his passenger seat and center console into a workspace with the help of a basket and a plastic organizer. His steering wheel became a desk with the help of wheeldesk from Amazon . To keep things charged he used a combination of his car charger and a power inverter to plug in his laptop.

desk setup in a motorhome

At the end of the day (or if they had to go somewhere), he would pack it all into a large igloo cooler. I thought it was strange until he told me that it was the best way he could think of to keep his stuff clean, dry and safe. Even if he accidentally dropped it in a mud puddle on the way to the RV, nothing would get damaged.

Don’t Forget to Stabilize

One final note. No matter how you configure your RV office, make sure to secure it. Things can and will shift during transit. This includes the stuff inside your office, not just your furniture. Invest in some baskets and locking storage containers to organize your office supplies . The last thing you want is to have your laptop falling on your head or your files scattered.

I hope I have helped you to figure out a way for you to take your work on the road with you and wake up to awesome views every day with some unique and creative rv desk ideas.

Sharing is caring!

If you’re considering a digital nomad life in an RV, then you might be wondering how to set up your RV office. Full-time RV living most often requires working while on the road and you may want an RV desk set-up.

Now, not every RVer works online. But, many who are not living off of their savings are working online doing some sort of remote work.

If you’ve read anything else we’ve written on the topic here at Let’s Travel Family, you’ll know that we have lived in our RV full-time for 2 ½ years and worked as digital nomads. During that time, we set up our RV workspace in a few different ways.

I want to share with you how we made it work in our Class C RV motorhome, and outdoors in our screened tent, along with SO many other office desk for RV suggestions from our RV friends who helped contribute to this article.

Keep reading to the end to learn from our RV living friends who have motorhomes, fifth-wheels, and even a travel trailer with desk ideas. Check out some of the pictures of other RV office ideas in fifth wheels, travel trailers, and Class A motorhomes.

RV Desk and RV Office Ideas

Think Outside The Box With Your RV Office Set-Up

As you contemplate how in the world you are going to have space in your RV to be productive with your work, I want you to take a few minutes to try to think outside the box.

Start by listing out what you NEED each day to successfully make an income to live the travel life you are dreaming of living.

Digital Nomad_

Do you need a silent desk space without interruptions because you’ll be on conference calls with clients who have no idea that you’re working from an RV?

Or, will you only have those types of meetings once a week during which time you can send your family and dog outside while you hop on your calls?

Will you be working 40 hours a week on a computer while your partner or kids need to eat lunch at the dining table?

Or, does your digital nomad job entail just 2 hours a day where you can take over the kitchen table when nobody is eating?

Make Money While Traveling - Digital Nomad on the beach

Do you NEED two monitors to get the job done? Or can you work off of a laptop and still make it function for you so that you have more flexibility?

There are many ways to look at your options.

Instead of saying ‘I HAVE to have XYZ’ you could say ‘XYZ is what I’m used to, but I’m willing to think outside the box to find a solution now that we are going to live in our RV full-time’.

5 Ways To Think Differently About An RV Office Space:

1. Buy noise-canceling headphones like these so that you can stay focused and get work done, even if the family or pets are making noise in the background.

2. Wake up early to work without interruption for a few hours before the rest of your family wakes up.

3. Work in batches, then take long stretches of time off during the day or week.

4. Try working in the passenger seat while your partner drives on a travel day.

5. Set up your desk over another usable space in your RV each day (multi-use).

7 RV Desk Ideas (with photos!)

RV Desk Outside

Now that you’re on your way to being ‘flexible’ with your remote workstation, let’s dive into some RV desk ideas that might get you thinking a bit about your situation.

Whether you are looking to buy an RV soon , or you already own one, I suggest reading all the way through this post to help you think creatively on how to set up your RV desk or office area.

  • Create a stand-up desk with folding tables stacked on your bed
  • Use the passenger seat in your motorhome as your desk
  • Turn your bedroom closet into a flip-down desk for RV life
  • Use a folding chair that stores away easily
  • Set up your desk in a screened-in tent outside
  • Custom build a desk for your RV
  • Sit at your dinner table
  • Turn your outdoor TV into your computer workstation
  • Use your kitchen stove or counter as a stand-up desk

Below, Tony used two folding tables and this laptop stand as his stand-up desk in our back bedroom.

I often use our stovetop in the early mornings as my standing desk for my laptop.

Here are a few more photos to give you ideas of what you could use as an RV desk.

My favorite photo is the one below that my friend Ashley shared with me of her desk in her fifth wheel bedroom. She was able to convert her cabinets into pull-down desk tops. It’s one of the best RV desk setup ideas I’ve seen!

RV Office Ideas

Okay, do you have your creative juices flowing yet? Are you thinking a bit differently about RV desks? I hope so because RV life does require a bit of flexibility.

Now I want you to think about your RV office setup creatively. Do you actually NEED a dedicated RV office conversion with an RV office chair, like this one ? Or are you willing to be flexible here too?

As a digital nomad family who lived in a Class C motorhome , Tony and I learned quickly to switch around our RV mobile office set-up depending on our situation.

For example, if we were visiting an area of the country where it didn’t rain much, I would often set-up our Gazelle Screened in Tent . and Tony would use it as his RV remote office for the week.

Gazelle Tent - RV Office Idea

Or, if we were camping in a National Park as we did in Rocky Mountain National Park, we would drive into the city of Estes Park where Tony and I would work from the library. Why? Well, because National Parks do not have much cell signal, and we can’t get online inside the parks.

Now, if you need or want to have a stable and consistent RV home office, then keep reading. I recently reached out to other full time RVers to ask for a few insightful contributions in order to help you discover you can set up your RV workstation.

What are some ideas to put an office in an RV?

Tearing out a dinette is the most popular option, but there are SO many floorplans and work flows, so it’s likely that all these solutions will be possible. Many people do this to make their space more homey and accommodating to their lifestyle, so you will need to choose what works best for you!

However, here are some workspace ideas I’ll show you today

  • Tear out and replace the dinette
  • Tear out and replace the couch/recliners
  • Use the bedroom (the bed can be the seat)
  • Use the garage area of a toy hauler
  • Custom build a desk insert to create more office space
  • Utilize a fold down desk set up
  • Convert the bunkhouse to an office
  • Create a standing workspace (and mount the monitors up high!)

Tear out the dinette and replace it with an office setup

This is the most common solution – dinettes are usually pretty easy to remove and are the perfect size for a small office. If you are able to custom build anything, you’ll be able to utilize the space even better.
