Solo Travelling Advice
Solo travelling is one of the most rewarding life experiences for you to have. I travelled alone (that is to say left home alone) for 20 or so years.
But you’re never really alone. You will always meet new people, whether they are fellow travellers or locals you meet, and have new experiences in new places together, with lots of memories.
The biggest advice for solo travelling, and what some of these solo travel quotes have said, is simply:
“Don’t be afraid, step out your door, and just go!” Me!
I love solo travel quotes, they just give inspiration for those planning to travel solo and see the world.
Enjoy your solo travelling adventure±
Solo Traveller Quotes
Those are the best solo travel quotes and travel quotes overall. I have used many of these over the past 25 years of travelling, and love them all.
For travel guides and advice for helping you out with your journey take a look at my destinations page.
As I mentioned in the beginning Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson are two of my favourite travel writers, with great solo travel quotes, and have books spanning all over the world, so if you want some great travel reading take a look at some of their books.
The Great Railway Bazaar is old now but a brilliant read and In a Sunburned Country is hilarious. I recommend Bookshop.org as they help support local bookstores.

Solo travelling quotes about the joy of the journey
I remember when I tried to explain the happiness and joy from my first solo trip to my friends when I returned home. I don’t think they understood it. But that’s okay. As long as I get it, that’s all that matters.
I always feel energized when I come home from a solo trip because travelling alone allows you to spend time the way you want and you get to be with your own thoughts .
And I’ve changed the way I travel solo over the years. I am learning how to slow travel and enjoy each moment. Rather than doing a hundred things in a day, I would go for a walk in the park, read a book or buy food at a local market. And I am learning to be fully present and be appreciative of the moment. And I feel I can only do this when I travel alone.

Travelling alone quotes about solitude and being by yourself
I came across several Facebook groups for female solo travellers and there were comments about solo travel and how it is lonely to travel on your own.
Travelling solo and being alone is very different . I never once felt I was lonely. Yes, I am alone but being alone and feeling lonely are not the same thing.
In fact, I always crave for this type of solitude because I really like being on my own. Perhaps its because I am an only child and I know how it feels to be by myself my whole life.
Before my first solo trip at 26, I was nervous too. But I learned to love the solitude even more when I am travelling . And it is the best feeling ever!

Solo travel quotes about strength
I never thought I’d be someone who would travel solo. But travelling solo has helped me to become a more confident person in many different facets of my life . I can take more chances when it comes to travel, willing to go to places that I have never been before and enjoying the process and not be in a state of fear.
Moreover, I feel my confidence also transpired to my everyday life . I am more outspoken, not afraid to do most things, be more initiative and more decisive.
Because I took my first solo trip many years ago, I am forever a changed person and am grateful for all my solo travel experiences .

I didn’t think I would be brave enough to travel on my own. It was such a foreign theory to me at the time, and nobody around me was travelling solo. But it wasn’t really about bravery. It was about trying new things and discovering what I like.

Loved it! I enjoyed reading your quotes. Stepping out into the unknown with no one else to rely on, you come to learn to learn so much about yourself. Often these solo trips are life-changing adventures. Fav one “You do not travel if you are afraid of the unknown. You travel for the unknown, the reveals you within yourself.”, well said. Sometimes I write about the quotes too. Here is an example post I wrote in case you or any of your readers find it interesting. Our content complements each other nicely, perhaps we can collab in some way in the future. Cheers! https://www.flaneurlife.com/solo-travel-alone-quotes/

Solo Travel Quotes to Give You Courage
#1 “don’t be scared to walk alone. don’t be scared to like it.” — john mayer.
We love this solo travel quote, as taking the first step is most often the scariest part of solo travel. And many people will let fear convince them that it’s OK not to even try, because once they get out into the world, they probably won’t even like it.
Nothing could be further from the truth!
For most solo travelers, that first trip is a liberating experience, though you have to be open to actually enjoying the experience. So we encourage you to not let fear get in the way of actually booking, but also to fully embrace the experience, and not be scared to like it!
#2 “I always wonder why birds stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth. Then I ask myself the same question” – Harun Yahya
I think all we can say to this is:
#3 “Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that — that’s what life is. You might be really good.” – Amy Poehler

#4 “I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” – Rosa Parks
It’s true – once you’ve made up your mind that you’re going to travel solo, your subconscious accepts that it’s going to happen. You might still experience certain levels of nervousness, excitement, fear, and anxiety in the lead up, but acceptance overwhelmingly diminishes fear.
#5 “One day you’ll wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now”. – Paulo Coelho
We love this solo trip quote, because it encourages everyone to live life to the fullest, and reminds us that none of us are guaranteed ‘someday’.
Don’t plan for ‘someday’.
Plan to live your life now.
#6 “There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.” – C.S. Lewis
#7 “Do you really want to look back on your life and see how wonderful it could have been had you not been afraid to live it?” – Caroline Myss
Well, do you?
#8 “If you make friends with yourself you will never be alone.” – Maxwell Maltz
One of the most common questions we’re asked as solo travelers is ‘don’t you get lonely’?
Because this is a big fear many people have of traveling alone (the fear of being alone is a legitimate anxiety disorder called Autophobia / Monophobia ).
But there’s a certain beauty to being confident, comfortable, and happy in your own company, and if you have a good relationship with yourself, you’ll find that you’re never lonely on the road. For those times when you are, it’s easy enough to meet new people when traveling on your own , which is why this is such a relevant solo travel quote.
#9 “To travel is worth any cost or sacrifice.” – Elizabeth Gilbert
It is expected that someone like Elizabeth Gilbert, author of word famous Eat, Pray, Love, thinks this way, and we also agree that a generous dose of conviction in the powers of solo travel is required to take the first step in trip planning .
#10 “Don’t ever accept anyone else’s preconceived limitations. If there’s something you want to do, there isn’t any reason you can’t do it.” – Amy Dodson
Women are often told “don’t do this”, “you can’t travel alone without a man”, “you can’t go to this country because you will not be safe”, etc. Don’t live someone else’s life – live your own.
Research a destination that has what you like and want, prepare and plan for anything that can happen, get travel insurance , follow all the safety precautions and get ready to have a great trip. This quote could not be more applicable to a solo trip!
#11 “Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” – Helen Keller
Helen Keller was spot on with this quote. Many people are afraid to travel solo because they fear it’s unsafe. However most destinations around the world are just as safe as the place you live in, and you’re just as likely, if not even more likely, to be caught out in a dangerous situation when you’re at home.
For instance, did you know that falling out of bed claims 450 American lives yearly? Ladders, lawn mowers, and even vending machines are among the mundane, every day objects which can be dangerous – but you don’t avoid buying a chocolate bar because a between two and four people die each year due to vending machine accidents.
While traveling comes with its own risks, it is the fear of the unknown , or xenophobia, that makes us more scared of a solo trip rather than the actual risk of visiting a place which may carry the same dangers as going about our daily life.
If that’s the case, you may as well travel solo. Remember this solo travel quote next time you are considering to go on a trip on your own.
#12 “The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me.” – Ayn Rand
Word. A wise quote perfectly suitable for a solo trip.
#13 “Life shrinks or expands in proportion with one’s courage.” – Anaïs Nin
It’s true – the more courageous you are to try new things in life, the richer and more fulfilling your life becomes. You have far more possibilities in life when you are open to them, and travel opens the mind like nothing else.
Remember this saying next time you are afraid of doing something, anything, and specifically when booking your next solo trip .
#14 “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” – Mary Oliver
We plan to travel, and explore every inch of this beautiful, fascinating, chaotic, and culturally diverse world!
#15 “Just go” – Every Solo Traveler Ever
Yep, this may not sound like the most complex of our solo travel quotes, but it sure is the one holding the most truth.
Solo Travel Quotes for Inspiration
#16 “dare to live the life you always wanted” – unknown.
One of the most inspiring of the traveling solo quote (though it applies to many situations in life), be daring, and be brave, build the life of your dreams and make sure that it includes traveling on your own.
#17 “Reality is negotiable” – Unknown
#18 “life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body. but rather, to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming …. wow what a ride.” – mark frost.
Going on an adventure can truly feel like this travel quote, and is there a greater adventure than a solo trip?
#19 “It is in all of us to defy expectations, to go into the world and to be brave, and to want, to need, to hunger for adventures. To embrace the chance and risk so that we may breathe and know what it is to be free.” – Mae Chevrette
It’s true – we’re all capable of embracing adventure, facing our fears, and living our best life. Freedom, flexibility and the ability to do what we want is one of the main reasons we travel solo.
While everybody who lives, will die, not everybody who dies, has lived.
Ponder that for a moment!
#20 “Sometimes, one day in a different place will give you more than 10 years of life at home.” – Anatole France
This solo travel quote is another of our favorites, because even if you only muster the courage to take a weekend trip alone, just having spent 48 hours outside of your comfort zone can teach you more about both yourself, and the world, than you ever would have otherwise known.
#21 “Travel is as much a passion as ambition or love” – Letitia Elizabeth Landon
If you asked a die hard traveler to choose between travel, ambition, or love, well…It’d be a tough choice!
As any solo traveler will tell you, their love to traveling independently is as deep as any addiction, which is why we appreciate this solo travel quote so much.
#22 “Now more than ever do I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere.” – Isabelle Eberhardt
Or in other words, once you’ve seen the sun shine on the other side of the world, once you’ve raised a glass with locals, laughed in a foreign tongue, tasted exotic food, and been exposed to the wonders of the world outside your bubble, you’ll never be content with life as it once was.
When it comes to travel solo quotes we can all relate to, this one explains the feeling of wander and wonder more than any other.
#23 “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and celebrate the journey.” – Fitzhugh Mullan
After-all, if you’re so consumed with making sure you don’t run into any hiccups, you’ll probably never end up taking that trip, and that would be a shame.
The very beauty of travel, and very thing which encourages the most personal growth, are the bumps, hiccups, and ‘potholes’ in the road. You learn to find solutions, you prove to yourself that you can overcome any challenges and you grow as a person.
These are also the stories you remember and retell for decades to come.
I mean, which epic tale of adventure has ever started with ‘Everything went smoothly’?! Remember this fun solo traveling quote next time you are going through a truly bumpy road.

#24 “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.” – Tony Robbins
It’s true – and to pull a quote from Nelson Mandela, to explain this epic solo travel quote;
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Once you take the first step towards that trip on your own, you will suddenly realize the world of opportunities ahead of you. If you need a confidence boost, join some of the best Facebook travel groups to get inspired!
#25 “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” – Anna Quindlen
It’s tough to move forward when you feel as though your present is trapped by your past.
But it doesn’t have to be.
Your future can be whatever you want it to be. Go on, save for that trip and just go.
#26 “Sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith.” – Margaret Shepard
Traveling on your own certainly feels like a massive leap of faith, especially that first time.
#27 “Traveling alone will be the scariest, most liberating, life changing experience of your life. Try it at least once!” – Unknown
It’s true – travel is scary, and traveling alone even more so. But of all the travel alone quotes, this one is particularly wise and poignant, because after-all, the scariest and toughest paths to follow are often the most rewarding.
Plus, of all the testimonials we have on our website, this is perhaps the feeling that most resonates with those going on their first trip.

Wise Advice (Packaged as a Solo Trip Quote)
#28 “don’t call it a dream…call it a plan” – unknown.
It’s very simple, but very powerful psychology – if you call it a plan instead of a dream, you’re affirming to yourself that it WILL happen.
#29 “Traveling is not something you’re good at, it’s something you do, like breathing.” – Gayle Foreman
One of the rare solo traveling quotes that sums up how almost every solo traveler feels – travel is simply not something you can do without once you’ve tried it.
It’s just as important to life as oxygen.
#30 “To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley
How true is that solo travel quote?
First hand experience will always trump second hand knowledge, and so often people’s tales and experiences with a destination are influenced based on their own personal interests, style, and bias. In today’s social media and connected world, this saying is even more true.
When you visit a place for the first time you almost always realize that most of what you’ve been told about the place is completely wrong – but the only way to find out is to plan a trip and visit.
So pack that suitcase , and go see for yourself so your opinions are based on your own first hand experience.
#31 “If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.” – Anthony Bourdain
Throughout his life, Anthony Bourdain had many classic quotes with thoughts on life and culture and pretty much any other topic, and he inspired many travelers to get out and explore the world solo.
These specific words are truly timeless when it comes to the impact of traveling solo .
#32 “The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.” – Henry David Thoreau
At some point, there’s only so long you can wait for your friends to be willing and ready to join you until you realize that you’re going to have to travel alone. Sometimes waiting for people to join you means you’ll never travel at all.
If you are scared, research a destination and plan our trip in detail ; If you are afraid to feel lonely, find ways to meet people or find a travel buddy ; If you want to have great pictures of your trip, learn how to take photos of yourself alone .
Whatever you need to do, but don’t wait up on others.
#33 “You know more of a road by having traveled it than by all the conjectures and descriptions in the world.” – William Hazlitt
Nothing, and we mean nothing will ever beat seeing something for yourself.
It just won’t.
That’s why we love this honest solo trip quote.
#34 “Solo travel not only pushes you out of your comfort zone, it also pushes you out of the zone of others’ expectations.” – Suzy Strutner.
Beat those stereotypes and don’t stick to meeting what others expect of you, only what you want to get for yourself.

Solo travel means spending more time with yourself than ever before, without the interruptions of day to day life, without work or friends. You deserve it.

#36 “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.” – J. K. Rowling
We sometimes hear our members say that they tried to go on their first solo trip and did not enjoy it. They took a risk, and it did not work out. And that’s ok, life is about taking risks, failing and learning.
#37 “Adventure should be part of everyone’s life. It is the whole difference between being fully alive and just existing.” – Holly Morris
We agree. Adventure should be part of everybody’s life.
Ultimately, do you want to simply exist? Or do you want to live ?!
And there is no greater adventure than a solo trip and that’s why we included this deep quote in our list.

Write your own chapters in-between and make sure solo travel is included in some.
#39 “A person needs at intervals to separate themselves from family and companions and go to new places. You must go without familiars in order to be open to influences, to change.” – Katharine Butler Hathaway
Of all the wise solo travel quotes on this list, this one is perhaps the one which most simply states the truth about traveling solo. No matter what great friends or family you have, spending time away and with yourself is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
#40 “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
One of the most commonly mustered solo travel quotes , Mark Twain’s paragraph is the perfect encouragement to catch that first flight .
Solo Travel & Personal Growth Quotes
#41 “a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions”. – oliver wendell holmes, jr..
Both physically and metaphorically true, this quote is so true when it comes to travel.
Once you’ve been exposed to new ways of seeing the world, new perspectives, new ways of doing things, and new ways of thinking, your mind will have been stretched and will never fit back within the box it first came in.
Reverse culture shock is how those whose minds have been “overstretched” feel when they return to their old life.
#42 “The inner journey of travel is intensified by solitude.” – Paul Theroux
This perfectly sums up traveling alone and explains why we all feel much more introspective and like we can finally send time with ourselves when we go on a solo trip.
#43 “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware”. – Martin Buber
This is one of the classic solo travelling quotes, and speaks to the hidden personal growth people often discover from traveling – lessons they didn’t sign up for and were least expecting.
#44 “I think one travels more usefully when they travel alone, because they reflect more.” – Thomas Jefferson
We could not agree more with Thomas Jefferson and this simple yet powerful quote about solo travel.
#45 “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch
It surely does, and a solo trip is the best way to get over the fence of your comfort zone.
#46 “Without new experiences something inside of us sleeps. The sleeper must awaken.” – Frank Herbert
Every time we try something new we fire new neural connections and that’s why it is so great for general mental wellbeing. Traveling solo, by definition, will activate a lot of those connections and it’s why it has such a rewarding effect on our own confidence.
#47 “A person susceptible to ‘Wanderlust’ is not so much addicted to movement as committed to transformation.” – Pico Iyer
You could argue that we are all susceptible to wanderlust, or at least, we have never met anyone who is not addicted to travel, but it is true that what is actually addictive is the change, the learning, the growth, the building of your self confidence, the excitement that comes with new things.
#48 “The best trip is the journey you take in finding yourself.” – Angela Vallely
As solo travel quotes goes this one is a favorite one among our members because it is a realisation you may not have before going on a solo trip but which is certainly something you get back home after that first trip on your own.
Besides traveling somewhere new, it is the journey inside your brain and your own mind that is probably the most addictive part of a solo tip.
#49 “If you don’t get out of the box you’ve been raised in, you won’t understand how much bigger the world is.” – Angelina Jolie
Being exposed to the world is the greatest gift you can give yourself.
#50 “Some journeys take you farther from where you come from, but closer to where you belong.” – Ron Franscell
Have you ever felt like you need to get away from your familiar environment to find out how much you love it? Perspective is golden.
This quote about traveling alone is a great reminder of just that.
#51 “As you travel solo, being totally responsible for yourself, it’s inevitable that you will discover just how capable you are!” – Unknown
This is the most spot on of all the alone travel quotes on this list; When you travel solo you learn to rely on yourself, and with this independence comes a great sense of confidence in your abilities, and greater sense of self worth. This is perhaps the greatest benefit of traveling alone .
You quickly realize you are capable of catching connecting international flights, navigating your way around a foreign city, and ordering food in a restaurant where you don’t speak the language.
After you’ve spent some time traveling solo, and learned to trust your decision making and trust in yourself, anything will seem possible.
#52 “Some journeys can be only travelled alone!” – Ken Poirot
Whether you read this travel alone quote in the metaphorical sense, for a journey of personal growth, or in the literal sense, where all of your friends have bailed and you’ve been left to travel alone, it rings true on many different levels!
Thanks Ken!
#53 “I learned my strengths and my weaknesses. I experienced the exhilaration of the ups and the despairs of the lows and most of the feelings in between… I learned courage and I learned it myself” – Ann Stirk
There’s no-where to hide when you’re traveling alone, and you certainly can’t hide from yourself. Solo travel will shine a very strong spotlight on your strengths and your weaknesses, and in doing so you’ll learn a lot about yourself. This is often impossible when you can retreat to the comfort of your home and it’s what makes this quote on solo travel so raw and honest to the reality of traveling on your own.

You’ll Laugh at These Travel Alone Quotes
#55 “if you have to wait for someone to travel with you, you may end up waiting a lifetime” – unknown.
We touched on this in solo travel quote #32, but it’s such wise advice that it’s been repackaged and re-worded so many times!
It’s always true!

Literally – we doubt you’ll find anyone who’s ever said this!
#58 “I travel a lot. I hate having my life disrupted by routine”. – Caskie Stinnett
It’s true. There’s quite a classic solo travel quote which goes hand in hand with this one quite nicely: “Adventure may hurt you, but monotony will kill you”.
Whether or not this is true (that monotony can prove deadly), we’re not willing to risk our lives to find out!

Be the queen of your own world and follow in the footsteps of this quote on traveling solo by exploring and discovering.
#64 “As a woman I have no country. As a woman my country is the whole world.” – Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf was one of the most important modernist writers of the 20th-century, and while she was more than just a women’s writer , her quotes and writings still have particular relevance to females to this day, almost 80 years after her death.
We particularly love the application of this quote into the solo travel context; it truly sums up the feeling of those of us who identify as ‘citizens of the world’.

Despite living in a modern, progressive age, where gender equality is widely championed and accepted, we still live in a society where women are underestimated, and their capabilities often undervalued.
“Women are not interested in traveling alone”
This was the answer a member of our community got from her university’s panel when she pitched her final year project: A planning app for women traveling solo. It seems the panel was out of touch with the reality:
– 2016-19 Google searches for “Solo Female Travel” have increased 400% – 65% of US women in a relationship also vacation solo – 80% of the travel decisions are made by women
So, to quote Edna Gardner Whyte , a pilot for over 60 years, and a pioneer aviator, – “Just watch, all of you men. I’ll show you what a woman can do”!
#72 “She remembered who she was and the game changed.” – Lalah Delia

Freya Stark is perhaps one of the most commonly quoted writers of the 20th century; and explorer and travel writer who lived for 100 years between 1893 – 1993, she wrote more than 25 books on her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan – countries that are still considered off the beaten path for travelers almost 100 years later.
A true pioneer in solo female travel, Freya was one of the first non-Arabs to travel through the southern Arabian Desert so this is one of our favorite solo travel quotes on this list.
#75 “One of the great things about travel is that you find out how many good, kind people there are.” – Edith Wharton
There is so much truth to this – people around the world are overwhelmingly kind, and we truly believe that once people travel, and realize this – form connections with locals, and realize the warmth of their hearts and hospitality, it would bridge many cultural divides.
#76 “Traveling solo does not always mean you’re alone. Most often, you meet marvelous people along the way and make connections that last a lifetime.” — Jacqueline Boone

Never forget this quote on solo travel next time you explore our backyard.
#80 “I am never happier than when I am alone in a foreign city; it is as if I had become invisible.” – Storm Jameson
Also playing into our above note on the liberating nature of solo travel; you’re not judged as harshly as you are at home, and you can freely live, explore, and enjoy the world, on your own terms, without being unduly noticed.
#81 “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

And travel is an addiction from which there is no known cure, and most will never recover!
But we don’t say this lightheartedly – travel addition is very real . Psychiatrists have historically named extreme cases of the travel bug as “dromomania”: a diagnoseable condition where the primary symptom is an uncontrollable urge to walk or wander.
The term was officially added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as an “impulse-control disorder” and “psychiatric problem” in 2000. 100 Most Inspiring Solo Travel Quotes
Thinking of travelling alone and searching for some travel solo quotes to inspire you? You’re in the right place. I know how scary solo travel can feel, I took my first solo trip to Australia when I was 18.
I’d just finished university and had a job starting a few months later, so I had some free time with no plans. My friends were taking gap years and were saving up to travel the following year, so it was either go alone, or don’t go at all. Although it felt really overwhelming at first, that trip changed me, and made me realise I can do anything I set my mind to.
Since then, I’ve travelled to multiple countries on my own, and I’m pretty good at giving myself a pep talk if I’m ever feeling scared. But sometimes, there’s nothing like an inspirational quote to reassure you that even though it might feel scary, it’s SO worth it in the end.
In this article, I’ve put together 100 of my favourite quotes to inspire your solo travel adventure. I’ve also added some pictures you can pin to your board on Pinterest, in case you want to come back to them later. Hopefully, after reading it, you’ll feel ready to take on the world. Ready for the 100 most inspiring travel solo quotes ? Let’s go.
My FAVOURITE quote for solo travel
- “Feel the fear and do it anyway” – Susan Jeffers
This quote gets its own section because it’s my favourite quote ever, and not just for solo travel but for everyday life. I’m a big believer in acknowledging your fear and pushing through it, and not letting it hold you back.
Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, this is the quote I whisper to myself. And I’ve used it a LOT. Most recently, was last summer, when my boyfriend and I visited Montserrat, a mountain range near Barcelona. We decided to walk up rather than take the cable car, and there’s different walking routes you can take depending on your experience level. I’d asked him multiple times to check which one we were taking because I know how easy it is to end up basically mountaineering, and I have a crippling fear of heights.
About 45 minutes later we were on a very narrow path, on the side of a mountain, after definitely taking the wrong route. I was completely overwhelmed and sat down on the floor crying like a toddler. It might sound like an overreaction, but for me, looking down the side of a mountain at a sheer drop is TERRIFYING.
He immediately said “let’s go back and find a different way” but I’m extremely stubborn. So that wasn’t an option that even entered my head.
I reminded myself of this quote, and it helped push me to keep going. That and the fact I gripped my boyfriend’s hand and refused to look over the edge.
It’s the perfect travel solo quote – sure, there’s going to be times you’re scared, and that’s fine, just don’t let it stop you experiencing things.
Ok, now I’ve shared my favourite quote for solo travel, here’s the other 99. I’m just going to list the rest, no more long-winded stories!

The benefits of travelling solo
There’s SO many benefits of travelling alone, here’s a few of my favourites:
- You can do things on your schedule – this is my favourite thing about travelling alone. You want to get up really early and explore when there’s no around? No worries. Feeling really tired and you’d prefer to lie in? No worries. Not interested in heading to a bar and you’d prefer to read a book? All good. You can do whatever you want without having to consider another person’s interests.
- There’s no risk of falling out with someone – Travelling with another person, even just for a week, can be tricky. You’re spending all your time together, so you’re bound to get on each other’s nerves at one point. But there’s no worrying about that when you’re on your own.
- You learn so much about yourself – After travelling alone plenty of times, I truly feel that I can do anything. Something that once felt like such a big deal, feels like nothing to me now. You realise that you can do anything you put your mind to. Spending time truly alone is such a good way to understand what you like and dislike, without outside influence.
- You meet new people you might not usually cross paths with – Travelling solo is a great way to have interactions with different people. If you want to make friends, you’ll need to push yourself out of your comfort zone to talk to new people. And in turn you’ll learn more about a new culture, lifestyle, or way of doing things. It’s this interactions that broaden our horizons and change the way we view the world.

And if you’re planning your upcoming solo trip, here are some resources that might help:
MY GO-TO TRAVEL PLANNING RESOURCES Flights ✈️ I use Skyscanner to find the best flights for my trip and then I’ll always book direct with the airline to protect myself from having to deal with dodgy third parties if anything goes wrong. Trains 🚂 If I’m travelling through Europe, I try to travel by train wherever possible! For an extended trip (2+ weeks) I’ll calculate if a Eurail Pass is worth it , or I’ll book point-to-point tickets through RailEurope or the local train operator. Accommodation 🛎️ I book almost all of my accommodation through booking.com , they have a user-friendly website + app and many of their options are free cancellation, easily cancelled with a simple click of a button. Activities 🗽 I use GetYourGuide , Klook and Viator to look for activities in the places I visit, or I just Google ‘things to do in [city]’! Travel cards 💳 I’m a Wise gal through and through, they’ve been my chosen travel card for more than five years now. You can easily top up your card from your bank account or through Apple Pay, convert your money to local currency, and spend money with minimal fees and the best exchange rates around. Travel insurance 🩺 I use Cover-More NZ travel insurance for my own trips, I have a comprehensive policy and I’ve only had good experiences with them. Cover-More also has an Australian company , but if you’re from elsewhere then two popular insurance options for global travellers are SafetyWing (cheaper policy, lower coverage) and World Nomads (more expensive but significantly better coverage). Luggage 💼 I travel with Samsonite Cosmolite suitcases , one 75cm check in bag and a 55cm carry on bag, and I absolutely adore them and will never travel with anything else! They are SUPER lightweight (2.8kg and 1.9kg respectively) so I have much more space for my actual stuff. Camera gear 📸 These days many of my photos and all of my videos are with my iPhone 15 Pro Max , my main camera is a Lumix G9 but I have a secondary camera (my old one) that’s a Lumix GX85 , I use a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone and a GoPro Hero 10 . I do all my writing and editing on my HP Spectre x360 , it’s super lightweight and perfect for travel.

Why Travel Solo
Over the years solo travel has become increasingly popular. Solo travel is empowering and molds you into a more courageous person when facing a new part of the world alone.
My first solo travel trip to the United Arab Emirates still today has been the most memorable out of all my explorations. During my excursions alone I dealt with the good and bad, but I realized I am far more capable to handle any unexpected situation.
Being alone gave me a nudge out of my timid comfort zone and made me one confident traveler.

The One Liner
Solo trips can be the scariest, most liberating thing of your life. learn 7 benefits of travelling alone in 2023., pavani mantripragada march 26, 2023. 2 minute read.
India’s youth has still not arrived into a zone where we have the solo trip trend.
This article is about why solo trips can be great for your individuality and how traveling alone changes the lives of many solo travelers. Read their testimonials below.
Let's dive right in..
- Table of Content
What Is Solo Travel?
Is solo trip a good idea, why are solo trips important, are solo trips fun, how solo travels change you, women and solo trips, travel where solo travels are best, group trips vs solo trips, final thoughts, here’s the thing that i remember vividly,.
DDLJ was the first part which convinced a large part of me that solo trips can change a lot of things about you. You will find that a solo trip can teach you a lot about yourself in a way that your mundane life might not. Even Simran did not know what she was missing in her life until she met Raj while on a solo trip in Switzerland.
Do you remember? Kangana Ranaut in the movie, Queen, and how her one trip to France how liberating and life changing experience for her.
Bollywood and its cliched romance aside, Solo trips are interesting. That’s why we are suggesting you try it out.
First things first,
Solo Trip is a trip that you make for yourself on your own. You don’t travel with a group of friends or family. It is just yours. You get to decide where you want to go, you get to decide the time in accordance with your schedule, and it is all on your terms. The budget is decided by you. Everything is done by you.
That’s a solo trip.
Believe me on this one,
Absolutely, without a doubt. Solo trips are great.
Especially when you feel extremely anxious about traveling with a group. I feel that solo travel has less peer pressure. Everything is on your terms. What you want to eat, how much you want to travel, what things you actually want to see. You don’t need to think that your friends will judge you if you wear this or say that or make silly mistakes in speaking the language.
You may feel a bit scared the first time but a solo trip will surely change you and teach you a lot about yourself.
You need to know this,
Solo trips, in my opinion, are largely about finding yourself. This whole trip is about you and yourself.
You know, like that famous dialogue, “I, me, aur myself”.
That’s what a solo trip is. You are going to find yourself in a way you never knew. Your mundane and monotonous life will not tell you striking revelations about yourself.
So, if someone had to ask me what I knew about myself other than this, I knew nothing. That was until I went through a solo trip.
“I always thought that I can’t be happy with just myself. I needed people around me all the time. That is how it has been all the time. School was all about friends. College was all about friends, records, exams and such. Work is all about your performance, work value, money, co-workers, and promotions. So, if someone had to ask me what I knew about myself other than this, I knew nothing. That was until I went through a solo trip. All alone, by myself. Sure, it was scary but I realized that I didn’t need someone to make me happy. I am happy by myself.”
But this trip. This four month solo trip has given me clarity.
Back home, people just don’t seem to get it. They don’t have that same light in their eyes when you mention buying a flight to somewhere remote and when you try and talk about your experiences, oftentimes it can come off like bragging or that you’re being pretentious.
The complete opposite happens when you travel. The people you’re surrounded by love traveling just as much as you do because they’re pursuing the same thing in the same country.
You can talk about your hometowns, the places you’ve been, the places you want to go, and everyone seems to just get it. It’s this huge shift that happens once you get out of your hometown or city and it’s one of the things that I love most about solo travel.
Key Takeaway
Solo travel not only pushes you out of your comfort zone but it also pushes you out of the zone of carrying other people’s expectations.
This is a common question,
Solo Trips are extremely fun but there are things you need to know about them. Understand truly what might be.
The days leading to the solo trip and the first few days can be the most overwhelming part. It might also get lonely. You will be your own support system, guardian, navigator, planner, and safety net. It might be a scary part.
It will definitely be an invaluable lesson about your own self. Growth is around every corner when you travel and that’s one of the rawest parts of the travel experience.
The first few times eating alone as well can feel weird but you’ll slowly grow into it.
You will actually learn how to love yourself the best. Nothing can teach you about you than yourself.
Solo Trips can be the scariest, most liberating, thing of your life. Try it at least once. You will not regret it.

1. solo trip will teach you self-dependence..
When you are doing everything yourself, you will also learn that the first person you should depend on is yourself.
2. Solo Trip will make you more confident.
You will find that at the end of this solo trip, you will find yourself more confident and clear with your ideas. That will clear away the negativity clouding you because the decision you make will purely be yours without someone subtly influencing your decisions.
3. Solo Trip will teach you how to enjoy smaller things in life
You will find that smaller things can be enjoyed in life. You enjoy looking at nature and appreciate its subtle beauty. You learn that your struggle for the big things wasn’t exactly what can make you really happy.
4. Solo Trip will develop interpersonal skills.
You will learn how exactly you can communicate with people accurately. You learn how to properly put your point across.
5. Solo Trip will develop problem solving skills.
You will have less dependence on other people to solve issues for you. So, you find out exactly what will solve your problems and what will aggravate them.
6. Solo Trip will help you achieve your dreams.
Solo Trip will give you that push you need to pursue the career of your dreams. It will happen during the solo trip after realizing your skills, potential, and drive to make it happen. It will help reveal how you cope with things, how you react to stress, what makes you feel safe, what makes you feel unsafe, all the things that you need to live a meaningful life.
7. Solo Trip can help you learn Various Language
This is the funniest one but it will teach you exactly how a language has to be learnt. Nothing can teach you a language like a solo trip to that place. People might laugh at your attempt but will be happy to help you out and learn it.
Let's jump in!
We asked Bhavana Shah, Founder of Earthy Hues Tours Pvt Ltd, who owns a Travel and tour company, who quotes, “In our culture, we expect women to shoulder the burden of their family’s responsibilities, and they neglect their own needs and growth. If you feel overwhelmed or burnt out, embarking on a solo trip can be a transformative experience that helps you reconnect with yourself and feel refreshed.
As a woman, you’ve probably planned most of your family’s vacations, yet traveling for yourself has taken the backseat.
But now, it’s time to put aside that wait for a “better time” for the kids to grow up or for an extended leave from work. And what better time to get those wheels turning than Women’s Day? Instead, put yourself first.?
Every woman must embark on a solo trip at least once. Solo travel reintroduces you to YOU – your strengths and weaknesses. It pushes you to fight your fears and inhibitions. And it showers you with a sense of independence.
Bhavana Shah, Founder of Earthy Hues Tours Pvt Ltd
We even asked a few Indian solo travelers what they thought about their experience with solo traveling and their benefits. And one of the solo travelers, Shatabdi (aka bongexpress), quotes,
“It’s the best way to travel if you know how to keep safe.
It makes you a more confident being. You don’t have to oblige anyone’s demands and can choose what you want to do with your time. It gives you more freedom and peace. You can escape the mundane selfies and touristy things that most people in groups do.
Shatabdi (aka bongexpress)
They live for social media stories and posts. Solo gives you a chance to sit quietly wherever you feel like it. You also talk to strangers and open up, which in a group is rare. I’m a photographer, so it gives me mental peace and time for my frames; people force me to take their pics in groups. Solo travels make you connect with nature and help you soak in and reflect deeper into life.”
And another solo traveler, Rakhi (aka rakhi_simmi), further quotes,
“Solo travel is the best thing I could have done for myself.
It brought incredible benefits to my life and career. Whether learning something new, reflecting on your life goals, or seeing the places you’ve always wanted, travel is the most intense way of learning and can be transformational.
It is so powerful to know yourself better and step into the unknown. It makes you more confident and independent
Rakhi (aka rakhi_simmi)
This fluid approach brings more flexibility and the space to take time out and reflect. Solo travel is an opportunity to do this – to take a step back, learn and develop – all while exploring the cultures and sights of this beautiful world we live in.”
Women are given security reasons for not letting them travel alone. But when you learn to move ahead of the worry about safety, you will get the best experience.
