An optional buzzer in the rooms alerts the guests when a spectacle is unfolding at the waterhole. Game drives and a lecture about Treetops are also available to the guests.
This lodge-on-stilts is accessed through a gradual ramp to the top floor and a Tree grows right through the building. There are 36 en-suite guest rooms that include 3 spacious suites and 33 twin rooms that can be converted into double rooms. A disabled friendly room is located on the first floor. Fine dining is at its best in the contemporary dining room with individual tables illuminated by mini chandeliers. Meals served at the lodge are dinner, breakfast and lunch for guests spending 2 or 3 nights at the lodge.
It is 17 km away from Outspan Hotel, where guests begin their journey to Treetops. Guests are advised to bring warm clothing as nights can get chilly at this lodge, which is 6,450m above sea level.
Self drive to Treetops is now allowed but with prior arrangement and clients must check in at Outspan before proceeding to Treetops.

A colonial treehouse lodge on stilts in Kenya’s Aberdare National Park. Exploring the Aberdare NP on a guided game drive (with a picnic lunch) to search for rare species like bongo antelope and giant forest hogs.
- Location : Nyeri, Kenya
- Price : $190
- Duration : One Night
Treetops Hotel could tell a story or two. Built in 1932 on an ancient elephant migratory route through Aberdare NP, this is the lodge where Queen Elizabeth II visited as a princess and left as queen. Since those days, however, Treetops has grown from a rustic platform in the branches of an ancient tree to a large stilted lodge, with 36 rooms – without losing the essence of that original treehouse style. In front of the lodge is a permanent waterhole and natural salt lick that are floodlit at night, attracting an incredible diversity of wildlife day and night.
This stilted structure has at its heart an ancient tree that grows up through the centre of the hotel, with a rustic atmosphere that's enhanced with timber turrets, winding staircases, and log-cabin interior. The guest lounge has a small library, and there's a cosy bar and a stylish restaurant. On top of the hotel, a covered viewing deck allows you to feel master of all you survey, from waterhole to wilderness. Two photographic hides are set along the waterhole’s edge.
The rooms have a charmingly rustic log-cabin feel, with comfortable twin or double beds, earthy natural colours, and a nostalgic colonial style. (You may find them a bit dark if you're used to beach-style bright accommodation.) All have en-suite bathrooms. There are three spacious suites with a snug lounge, and a deep bathtub as well as a shower. All rooms face the waterhole – a buzzer alerts you when wildlife is present, so you needn't be constantly on guard.
Morning and late afternoon game drives in Aberdare NP offer the chance to see black rhino, leopard, elephant and buffalo, plus rarities such as the bongo antelope and giant forest hog. Take a picnic and spend the day on a guided drive of the highlands, renowned for their stunning waterfalls, clear mountain streams and pristine forests. Explore on horseback (if available) or take a guided game drive in nearby Solio Game Reserve, a sanctuary for black and white rhino.

Curtain falls on Iconic Treetops Safari Lodge
Kenya’s oldest safari lodge, Treetops – an elaborate treehouse on the edge of a watering hole in Aberdare National Park – where a monarch famously ‘went up the tree a Princess and came down a Queen’, has closed its doors after 90 years, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The property was rebuilt after being burned down by arsonists a few years later.
Treetops falls victim to COVID-19 effects
The lodge is one of several casualties of the pandemic in Kenya where tourist revenue declined due to travel restrictions. Treetops is one of three historical hotels in Kenya’s Nyeri county being forced to close due to the effects of the pandemic.
Treetops, which has not had a visitor in a year, was also used by British colonial soldiers as the base for their snipers, but it was burnt down by Mau Mau fighters in 1954.
A new Treetops then took shape on the other side of the watering hole where it has remained, with guests even able to retrace (as long as they have an armed guide) the jungle walk which Princess Elizabeth made in 1952.

The warm jewel tones of the guest rooms at Treetops lodge are inviting and homely, and the modest rooms are clean. Standard rooms have twin beds that can be converted into a double bed and en-suite bathroom with shower

Tarangire Treetops Lodge
Insider’s Review of Tarangire Treetops Lodge
We almost needn’t say that living for a while in an African treehouse is a sweetly common dream. But the reality at Tarangire Treetops out-magics armchair revery. Here, like Isak Dinesen, we wake “in the morning, and [think], Here I am, where I ought to be.”
Freshly brewed coffee in hand, we walk out on our treehouse’s broad balcony and revel quietly in the luxury of sweeping views across marvelously varietal landscapes: rocky outcrops, graceful hills, and Africa’s golden joy, golden savannah strewn generously with acacias and stately old baobabs, the homeland of just about all of the continent’s endlessly intriguing animals, including 2,500 or so elephants; “An ancient life force,” Peter Matthiessen called them, “delicate and mighty, awesome and enchanted, commanding the silence ordinarily reserved for mountain peaks, great fires, and the sea.”
Accommodations at Tarangire Treetops Lodge
Tarangire Treetops’ 20 treehouses resemble the treehouses of our youth like a humble Timex resembles a Patek Phillipe. Each is just a tad under 700 square feet, designed in a mixture of modern and traditional materials, and of course each features that revitalizing, viewful veranda, a full bath with double shower, wifi reception, and the unstinting service of the Lodge’s staff. The main lodge is nestled around a millennially wise old baobab tree, and the dining area overlooks a watering hole frequented by Tarangire’s animal citizens. And after a rousing game drive, a splash in the Lodge’s bright blue swimming pool is yet another Tarangire Treetops treat.

Activities at Tarangire Treetops Lodge
Tarangire Treetops is situated in a large private conservation area adjoining Tarangire National park . This is an area with a reputation for embodying the deepest African safari mystique.
Our Safari Director knows Tarangire ardently, and so we’ll get the colourful job descriptions and experience the charisma of Tarangire’s rich wildlife: giraffes (like “rare, long-stemmed, gigantic speckled flowers slowly advancing,” Isak Dinesen wrote), waterbucks, dik dik, Grant’s elegant gazelles, vervet monkeys, ever-busy baboons, along with cheetahs, almost 600 bird species, Taranagire’s exceptionally large elephant population, and, of course, its lions, who make one feel, Isak Dinesen wrote, “that everything else is so trivial—thousands of generations of unrestricted supreme authority….”
Expertly conducted night game drives out of Treetops are especially enticing as we watch the nocturnal take over from the day shift—and look up to a sky “bristling with innumerable stars, as close-packed as the quills on a porcupine,” as Elspeth Huxley remembered. And we’ll pay a respectful visit to our Safari Director’s old friends at a close-by Maasai village , a reminder that —as we often say—we come to Africa to see the animals, but leave in love with the people.
