The Trek Segafredo team just got back from training camp, and by the looks of it, they are ready to hit the races.

Trek Segafredo cataldo climb

For the 2022 season, the Trek Segafredo World Tour teams (men’s and women’s) will be on familiar equipment, with little to no changes in componentry over the last year. The team will ride the Trek Madone for most races, Trek Emonda for the hillier courses, and Trek Domane for events like Paris Roubaix, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, and other classics as riders see fit. The team will be on the trusted Trek Speed Concept for the time trials, a bike that Trek Factory Racing and Trek Segafredo helped craft into its world championship-winning form.

Trek Segafredo decent

Componentry will be all Bontrager, and really — we don’t see a problem with that. The Bontrager Aelous RSL wheels are some of the fastest, best feeling wheels we tested last year, and it says a lot that the tubeless setup is good enough for the World Tour. The team has the choice between many depths of wheels; for climbing stages — Aeolus 37 , for the classic and daily chores — Aeolus 51 , and for cheating the wind — Aeolus 62 .

Trek Segafredo Ciccone out of the saddle

Bars and stem combo range from Bontrager’s new RSL Aeolus one-piece combo to RSL stems and various bars for different terrain. Most will go with Bontrager’s ISOCore VR bar for the extra padding in the classics like Paris Roubaix.

Trek Segafredo Ragot in gravel

Each member chooses what saddle fits them the best after consulting with the Trek Precision Fit crew. Most of the team will be using the Bontrager Aeolus saddle — designed for an aggressive aero position. The Aeolus is Bontrager’s first entry into the short nose power-style saddles and quickly became popular among the World Tour teams.

Trek Segafredo Cordon Ragot near team car

The team will ride exclusively on Pirelli tires, both tubeless and tubular. The go-to model for the team is the Pirelli P Zero TLR , and P Zero tubular. Trek is one of the few World Tour teams leaning toward tubeless rather than tubular, and Pirelli plays a significant role in this decision. Pirelli has worked with Trek-Segafredo riders for the last two years to test and improve their products and help the team perform at the world level. Pirelli’s tubeless tire P Zero TLR, piloted under Lizzie Deignan, was ridden the first-ever victory of Paris-Roubaix Femmes.

Trek Segafredo Longo Borghini decending

SRAM provides the shifting, braking, and power meters for the Trek Segafredo crew. The team will ride the SRAM Red components for all races and training, taking advantage of the wide range of the groupset. As for power measuring needs, the team will use the Quarg Red AXS Power meters .

Trek Segafredo Egholm

Bontrager is the helmet and footwear supplier for the Trek Segafedo team. They will race both the Ballista and the Bontrager XXX shoes . For helmets, the rider will have the choice of the Velocis helmet or the Bontrager XXX Wavecel, depending on race conditions.

Trek-Segafredo convinced Tour de France win is still within Contador’s reach

He’s now 34 years of age and hasn’t won a Grand Tour since the 2015 Giro d’Italia, but Alberto Contador’s new team has faith that the atmosphere at Trek-Segafredo will give him a new edge.

Speaking to CyclingTips at the team training camp in Albir, Spain, general manager Luca Guercilena and directeur sportif Steven de Jongh have both backed Contador in his campaign to win another Tour de France.

They have dismissed the claims of Tinkoff owner Oleg Tinkov that the rider is over the hill and won’t take another yellow jersey to Paris.

“Alberto is clearly a great champion,” said Guercilena. “For us it is really a success to have him here with us. I still think he is competitive in the GC, especially in the Grand Tours. We would love to support him and to create an environment that can help him to be back and to perform at 100 percent of what he needs.

“I think we are on the good way. We would like just to let him feel comfortable and relaxed at the start of the three week races so he can focus 100 percent on the performance.”

De Jongh worked with Contador for four years at Tinkoff and has moved across with the Spaniard, along with several others.

He too was in attendance at the team camp and sat down to talk about the move. Like Guercilena, he too is convinced that Contador has more to give.

“He looks very happy,” de Jongh said. “He is pleased with everything happening with the team and also with all the other signings too. With the riders they have brought to the team and those they had before, he is maybe in better surroundings than in recent years.

“The structure looks really good too, so we are looking forward to the start of next season.”

For de Jongh, there is another factor too which he believed could make a difference: having calmer surroundings.

“For Alberto, the environment here is more quiet than before,” he said, likely referring to the friction between the rider and Tinkov.

However, that said, he also underlined the importance of what the Russian had done.

“Okay, with Oleg Alberto had his ups and downs, but in the end Oleg paid a lot of money,” he said. “Last year Alberto couldn’t deliver a Grand Tour win, but before that there were no major incidents, I think.

“When Alberto won the Giro and the year before when he was in good shape for the Tour, everything was going quite well of course. We are grateful that Oleg put in so much money because in the end he paid it from his own pocket. I respect that.”

Contador won the 2016 Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco.

‘He is a super-professional rider’

Contador is in the final few years of his career but is one of the most successful riders of the modern era. He won the Tour de France in 2007 and 2009, as well as two editions of the Giro d’Italia and three of the Vuelta a España.

In recent years his push for a Tour win has been complicated by a successful 2015 Giro campaign which left him worn out in the later race, as well as crashes in 2014 and again this year.

He knows that the clock is ticking but is determined to top the podium again in July one more time. His move to Trek-Segafredo is a step towards that goal.

Several people at the Trek camp said they believed that Contador will benefit from his change. Moving from Tinkov’s team brought to an end the ever-increasing pressure from the Russian to win the sport’s biggest race and, when the latter started to publicly slate his star rider, it was clear that their relationship was on the rocks.

While Guercilena also wants to see Contador in yellow in Paris, he said that his team would focus on supporting him in the best way in order to help him get the most out of himself.

He is convinced that getting that aspect right will have a clear benefit.

“What we know is that Trek Segafredo can help him to be back focussing just on the sports side and not to have any other specific stress around doing his job,” he explained. “We all know that a rider’s job is quite difficult. You need a mental approach that should be really targeting only the results and not be distracted by other things.”

However, while he is suggesting the Trek-Segafredo atmosphere will be better for Contador, Guercilena held back from saying that Tinkov’s approach was incorrect.

“A great champion is always able to deal with this kind of stress,” he said, when asked about the tension between Tinkov and Contador. “In a certain way it is normal also that owners can put a bit of pressure on the athletes.

“[But] It is evident that if the environment that you have around you is supporting you 100 percent, it is easier to reach your goals. If it is not, then the mental approach can clearly be affected. But let’s see how it will be with us. Talking about other situations is never easy because we don’t know the situation itself.”

It is early days, but thus far Guercilena makes clear that he is happy with what he has seen.

“The feeling is that he is a super professional rider,” he stated. “He is clearly a person and a rider who looks a lot at the details; we all know in cycling details are what are making the difference.

“On top of that, he is a guy who is fitting in well with the group. I see that he has the capability to merge with the riders that he knows will be supporting him in the next season.”

Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) crashed heavily on the opening stage of the 2016 Tour de France.

‘He definitely still has the qualities needed’

During the camp those working with Contador on the technical side of things told CyclingTips that they believe that improvement has already been found in terms of equipment and bike setup.

De Jongh echoed this. “We went to the track a couple of days ago and some interesting things came up there,” he said, referring to the tests carried out.

“Yesterday we went back to the bike fitting people and we improved a bit. It is all those small things that I think we have to work on. You cannot leave any stone unturned…let’s put it like that.”

Contador didn’t speak to media at the camp but will do so at the next get together in January. The aim was to ease him into his new setup and to let him concentrate on getting his position and equipment dialled, on meeting his new teammates and on building form.

He will keep working in the coming weeks and will then make his season debut in the Ruta del Sol in February. After that he is likely to ride Paris-Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and the Vuelta a Pais Vasco in his buildup to the Tour de France.

The latter event is the number one focus and, after the frustrations of recent campaigns, a huge target for Contador.

“Alberto definitely thinks that he can still win a big Tour,” says de Jongh, dismissing any claims he is too old. “He is always super motivated, and has some extra ambitions for sure after the past couple of years didn’t go as he hoped.

“I still believe he can win the Tour. He definitely still has the qualities. He needs to stay healthy…that is the main thing, I think.”

Pirelli sides with the World Tour Team Trek-Segafredo once again

trek segafredo tour team

You don't change a winning team. If anything, you need to strengthen the link between the team members and study new ways of working and making progress together. This is what the World Tour Team Trek-Segafredo, one of the most competitive cycling teams in the world, decided to do with the help of Pirelli, who has supplied the team's athletes with tyres to train and compete with and technical support to get the most out of their product features for over a year.

Pirelli sides with the World Tour Team Trek-Segafredo once again 01

The announcement comes directly from the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, which just recently hosted the 17th round of this year's Formula 1 championship: in 2022 and 2023, the World Tour Trek-Segafredo team will be joined by Pirelli once more, and from next year also with the P Lunga logo on the team's jerseys. But especially on the tyres, in a relationship of mutual enrichment that will always focus on technological development.

A fairly new partnership, but one that has already been consolidated, and that is proving concretely satisfactory in terms of product development, but also from a performance perspective: in just two seasons racing on Pirelli P Zero, several athletes in the team have reached the podium in major races. Examples of this are Jasper Stuyven's first place in the Milano-Sanremo, Elisa Longo Borghini's third place in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège, or Elizabeth Deignan's recent victory in the Paris-Roubaix, whose roughness made the role of tyres particularly important for the success in the race.

At the same time, the partnership with the US team helps Pirelli understand the needs of those who rely on the brand's tyres to achieve their goals, a significant piece of equipment that can impact in a decisive way on competitive activity. This way, every enthusiast who chooses Pirelli tyres for their bicycle knows that they have at their disposal a product developed with the feedback from some of the best professionals in the world.

So it was quite natural, when Formula 1 stopped at the Trek-Segafredo team's ”home“ circuit in USA, to announce the consolidation of the partnership with Pirelli within its natural element, the Formula 1 Grand Prix. For Pirelli, the highest category of motor sports has always been the most important open-air laboratory that generates the experience and the technologies, which are then transferred to road tyres.

To warm things up before the fastest racers in the world could take to the stage, Elisa Longo Borghini and Mads Pedersen from the Trek-Segafredo Team took to the Texas circuit on their bikes. During this lap of honour, the athletes were accompanied by the enthusiasm of the Formula 1 crowd, who with their warmth are always quick to acclaim the champions of all sports when they come onto the track. Provided that Pirelli tyres are fitted.

Trek-Segafredo sweeps Women’s WorldTour team and individual rankings

trek segafredo tour team

Lizzie Deignan and Elisa Longo Borghini go one-two in the individual classification as Trek-Segafredo seals top team.

In its second year of existence, the Trek-Segafredo’s Women’s Team made a clean sweep of the UCI Women’s WorldTour (WWT) rankings, winning the individual and team classifications, a direct result of a successful 2020 season in which the Team scored an impressive five UCI WWT victories.

With a shortened and condensed calendar for the 2020 Women’s WorldTour, a result of the on-going pandemic that caused cancellations of events, it was critical to secure significant results in almost every race on the UCI WorldTour calendar. And the Trek-Segafredo women did just that.

The Team kicked off the season on a high in January with US Champion Ruth Winder winning a stage and the overall at the Tour Down Under in Australia. They carried the momentum into the first WWT event, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, where Tyler Wiles (4th) and Ruth Winder (8th) secured top-10 results and the first points for the Team.

It wasn’t until August before the WWT continued in Italy, a four-month hiatus in the unprecedented global pandemic-hit season. In the WWT restart, Elisa Longo Borghini netted a top-five placing in Strade Bianche. Then former World Champion Lizzie Deignan took back-to-back wins in GP de Plouay and La Course by Le Tour de France , which rocketed her to the top of the WWT rankings and into the coveted leader’s jersey.

The longest multi-day race of the series, the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile (Giro Rosa), opened in September, and Trek-Segafredo captured its biggest goal of the year, claiming the opening team time trial. Elisa Longo Borghini then went on to win Stage 8 and finished in 3rd place on the General Classification.

In the intensive new schedule, the Team went straight into the Ardennes Classics and continued to show their gritty and cohesive spirit.  Deignan fought her way to a formidable fourth place in La Flèche Wallonne – where she briefly lost the WorldTour lead –  and then took a monumental victory in Liège-Bastogne-Liège four days later. It was a brilliant display of teamwork in one of the most challenging one-day races on the calendar.

Deignan regained a substantial lead at the top of the UCI WWT ranking and wouldn’t be dethroned for the remainder of the season. In fact, the rider who came closest to unseating the Brit was her teammate Elisa Longo Borghini, who had her most successful season to date. Longo Borghini notched 14 top-10 results in WWT races and was sitting in third place in the ranking heading into the final race.

trek segafredo tour team

Trek-Segafredo sent a small team to the last WWT race in Spain; a three-day race suited more to sprinters. With both WorldTour individual and Team rankings settled, Deignan had already ended her season. However, Longo Borghini was still on a roll – and there’s no stopping a rider experiencing some of the best form of her career.

Admittingly, Longo Borghini is not known for her sprinting ability. But the recently crowned Italian National Champion’s determination and some damn good race legs – and dedicated teammates – helped her in a 30-kilometer solo effort for the final day of the Challenge by La Vuelta. Longo Borghini gobbled up enough bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints to solidify second overall .

It was enough for Longo Borghini to climb into second place in the UCI Women’s WorldTour and give Trek-Segafredo an even sweeter ending to a fruitful 2020 season.

There was this momentum in the team with people like Audrey winning the French national champion title, and once the ball was rolling, it just kept going.

Lizzie Deignan

“I’m really delighted to win the Women’s WorldTour overall. It’s not something I expected at the start of this season. The fact that Elisa was second in the ranking shows just how strong we were as a team, and that we won the WorldTour team ranking as well.

“I think it’s a reflection of all the hard work and dedication that everyone put into the season. It wasn’t by any means an easy season. I have to say I have huge admiration and respect for my American teammates who came over and raced their hearts out in a season when it was difficult to know when they would be able to get home. Lauretta (Hanson) from Australia had the same situation. Then Audrey (Cordon-Ragot) and Elisa had really tough lockdowns with not being able to train outside.

“I was really inspired and motivated by everybody’s commitment, enthusiasm, and motivation to race. There was this momentum in the team with people like Audrey winning the French national champion title, and once the ball was rolling, it just kept going.

“I think it’s down to the fact that we’re such a united team and kept each other motivated at all times. We completely trust and respect each other, and I think that really shows in the way that we race. Even though it’s only our second season as a team, it wasn’t a surprise to me that we did so well. I could see already in the training camps in the winter before the pandemic hit, that we were in a really good place on and off the bike.”

  • Elisa Longo Borghini

“I think it has been the craziest season I’ve had in my career and also the one where I’ve achieved the most. I’ve been really consistent all season long. I’ve had a lot of top-10 results from the very beginning, starting with Volta Navarra and ending now in Madrid. I started my season with a second-place and ended with a second-place as well.

“Some of my highlights of the season were the victory in the Individual Time Trial at the Italian Championships. The parcours didn’t exactly suit me – it was really fast and flat. Another highlight of my season was the stage victory in the Giro Rosa. In that race, I really felt the whole team was fully committed to me. I remember crossing the line with my front wheel and raising my hand in the air. It was so satisfying.

“Another highlight was La Course. For sure, it was one of the best races of the season in terms of team tactics. I really loved how we managed that race. The way we raced La Course was the way we always tried to race this season. We’re a team that is so united and not one of us cares sacrificing for the leader, which is a dynamic that isn’t always easy to achieve within a team. We genuinely devote ourselves to whoever has the best chances to win on the day.

“Another very nice memory that I have from this season is the TTT at the Giro Rosa because it was a team victory, and of course, I cannot forget my Italian road race title. I had been chasing the Tricolore for quite a while, and it’s always special to wear this jersey. I’m a proud Italian, and wearing the Tricolore is always special for me.

“I also won some medals in the European Championships and World Championships… it’s been a crazy rollercoaster! A journey that I lived with the team. We had victories, defeats, highs, and lows – a very emotional journey. Now I’m really happy the season is over and done with, and I have time to spend with my family and recharge for 2021.”

The Giro Rosa TTT was a big goal of ours, and I consider that one of the highlights of our season.

trek segafredo tour team

Ina Teutenberg, Team Director

“In 2020, we achieved specific goals and accomplished even more by winning the WWT team and individual classifications. I think this proves we came out of lockdown in good shape, physically and mentally. The team worked extremely well, and that shows in the results that we achieved. The Giro Rosa TTT was a big goal of ours, and I consider that one of the highlights of our season. Liège-Bastogne-Liége and La Course were fantastic victories, and for sure, the 3rd place on the GC for Elisa (Longo Borghini) at the Giro Rosa was also impressive.

“I think in this second season as a team, the riders bonded well despite the unusual year we had. I think we can further build on that strong team base for next season and try to win some more big races. The riders trust each other and are individually willing to give it all for the team. I think that had a big impact this season and one of the key reasons why we were so successful.”

trek segafredo tour team

Lizzie Deignan and Elisa Longo Borghini shared incredible chemistry this year.

Luca Guercilena, Trek-Segafredo General Manager

“Our women’s team had undoubtedly a great season. They reached their goals and then some, but in 2021 I hope we can take another step forward and be competitive in some more races such as Strade Bianche and accomplish better results in the sprint races.

“The fact that we conclude the season at the top of the UCI WWT rankings, both in the team and individual classifications, is a huge success, particularly when we consider that 20 months ago we were just starting to have talks about having a women’s team in Trek-Segafredo.

Our culture is that when one rider wins, the whole team wins.

“The team had many outstanding results, but for me, Liège-Bastogne-Liège was one of our best races. We weren’t the favorites going into the race, but our directors’ strategy was perfect, and the riders really delivered a great performance. It was a fantastic race.

“I feel this season, our second as a women’s team, we really succeeded in consolidating our interpersonal relations, and the friendship bonds that were created were one of the crucial points. Building a team takes time, but I feel the riders are enjoying racing, having fun together, and that is a direct result of this stronger team spirit and blossoming friendships within the team. In cycling, we can easily see that individuals without teams supporting them aren’t successful. At Trek-Segafredo, we have assembled a large number of champions and built an amazing team. Our culture is that when one rider wins, the whole team wins.”

The 34-year-old is joined in the move from Bahrain-Merida by brother Antonio as well as several staff members. Kenny Elissonde (Team Ineos), Emils Liepins (Wallonie-Bruxelles) and Alexander Kamp (Riwal Readynez) are also transferring to the American team.

Nibali makes the move to Trek after three years spent at Bahrain-Merida. When his long-rumoured signing was finally announced, he said that, "I followed my heart and chose this team, knowing that their project is very serious and competitive.

"The great confidence Trek and Segafredo and all the other sponsors are showing in me is very motivating. I am really happy to continue my cycling career at Trek-Segafredo and look forward to 2020."

British U23 time trial champion Charlie Quarterman joins after impressing during a spell as a stagiaire, as does Spaniard Juan Pedro López, who won a stage at this season's Giro della Valle d'Aosta. Michael Ries and junior world road race champion Quinn Simmons also turn pro with Trek next season.

Nine riders have renewed their contracts with the team, with Giulio Ciccone, Kiel Reijnen, Ryan Mullen, Alex Kirsch, Nicola Conci and Niklas Eg re-signing for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Gianluca Brambilla, Toms Skujins and Jacopo Mosca have signed deals for next year.

Cobbled classics specialist John Degenkolb is the biggest name on the outgoing list as he heads to Lotto Soudal, while Michael Gogl, Fabio Felline and Fumiyuki Beppu join Team NTT, Astana and Delko Marseille Provence, respectively. Alex Frame is also leaving the team, though his future destination is as yet unknown.
