Theoretically, you could switch between several 50$ suitcases every other year, but you’ll have to deal with a lot of unexpected incidents, which just isn’t worth it.

In this article, we’ll cover nine luggage brands that offer a lifetime warranty for their suitcases. The brands aren’t listed from best to worst. All of the brands mentioned in this list offer solid lifetime warranties.

Limited V.S. Unconditional Lifetime Warranty

Before we begin, you should understand the difference between a limited warranty, and an unconditional one.

Although we’ve included nine brands in this list, only Briggs & Riley, Eagle Creek, Patagonia, Osprey, Red Oxx, and Nomatic offer a fully unconditional lifetime warranty. This means that they’ll fix any functional defects regardless if it’s airline damage, misuse, or an accident.

All other brands mentioned in this list (Away, Travelpro, and Thule) offer limited lifetime warranties, which means that the warranty will be valid only for “normal use.” Usually, airline damage isn’t covered by limited warranties.

Having said that, this doesn’t mean that “limited” warranties are necessarily bad. For instance, the Away limited lifetime warranty is really good and covers a lot of defects that normal warranties wouldn’t usually cover.

Also, a lot of companies make their warranty terms really long and choose non-specific, subjective wording, which doesn’t really explain much. We’ve tried to avoid these types of companies, and we haven’t included them in this list.

1. briggs & riley (300$ – 800$).

If you’d speak with anyone working in the airline industry, and ask them what kind of a suitcase they’re using, you should hear Briggs & Riley come up quite a lot. Between frequent flyers, business travelers, and airline pilots, they’re probably the most popular choice out there.

Their suitcases aren’t cheap. In fact, they’re far from cheap, but they’re worth it for those who travel a lot. That’s because they’re incredibly well-built and come with their “Simple as That” lifetime warranty. They were founded in 1993, and since then have become the top choice for frequent flyers.

The warranty covers any functional defects on their luggage for a lifetime, such as broken wheels, zippers, tears in the fabric, or broken handles. That said, they don’t cover any cosmetic damage, such as scratches, dirty fabric, or faded colors.

What makes this warranty great, is that they d on’t really care how you broke the bag. Whether it was airline damage, an accident, or anything else, they’ll fix it. Also, you don’t need any proof of purchase and the warranty transfers between owners. You’ll have to cover the shipping costs to their repair center, and they’ll cover the return shipping costs. It’s by far the best warranty on any luggage brand, so if you’re looking for something that will last, you should choose Briggs & Riley.

2. Away (200$ – 600$)

JRSK, Inc. (Away) is a much newer luggage company, established only in 2015. Instead of making regular luggage, they offer “smart luggage” , which has become a pretty big trend over the last few years. A few similar companies have popped up, however Away is by far the largest one. Their suitcases come with built-in chargers, smart packing features, and they look really minimal and modern, which is more appealing for a younger audience.

But not only do their suitcases look good – they’re also made to last. They’re made from durable materials and backed up by a really solid lifetime warranty. Although it’s a “limited” warranty, it’s still a really good one.

Their lifetime warranty covers any functional defects, such as cracks in the frame, tears in the fabric, and broken wheels, handles or zippers. The only conditions are that they don’t cover any cosmetic damage and that only defects resulting from “normal use” are covered. In their terms, “normal use” is explained as traveling by air, car, train, boat, or foot.

The good thing is that Away covers all shipping costs to and from the repair centers, which is not very often covered by other warranties. Also, for the warranty to work, you’ll need to provide proof of purchase, such as a receipt or an invoice.

3. Eagle Creek (150$ – 450$)

If you’re into outdoor stuff, chances are that you’ve heard of Eagle Creek. They make all kinds of rugged bags for hiking, camping, traveling, and backpacking. Their bags don’t look too professional or classic. Instead, they’re going for a more outdoorsy, long-term-traveler look. So if you’re a business traveler you should probably forget about them.

Although they mostly focus on packing cubes and backpacks, they also offer quite a few softside suitcases, which aren’t too expensive. For instance, they’ll fix loose stitching, faulty wheels, and damaged zippers as long as the product still looks in a “good condition”. However, they won’t repair a product that looks like it’s been used a thousand times. If that’s the case, they’ll deem your item to have reached its lifetime.

4. Patagonia (200$ – 350$)

In its essence, Patagonia is a very similar brand to Eagle Creek. They offer durable gear for traveling, hiking, camping, and backpacking. That said, they’re a much larger company than Eagle Creek, and they mostly focus on outdoor clothing, not gear. Nevertheless, they still offer quite a few duffles, backpacks, and rolling duffles, which are protected by their “ Ironclad” lifetime warranty .

Their “Ironclad” lifetime warranty is so good because it’s a very simple warranty with no hidden rocks. Essentially, they’ll repair their gear free of charge for a lifetime regardless of the cause, except for normal wear and tear.

On their website, they offer a lot of self-repair kits, which you can use yourself to speed up the repair process. If, however, you choose to send the item back to their repair center, you’ll have to pay for the shipping. Return shipping is covered by them.

5. Travelpro (100$ – 400$)

Travelpro is another luggage brand that’s popular among flight crews and business travelers, similar to Briggs & Riley. They offer various suitcases, backpacks, and duffles which all look sleek and professional. The only difference between Briggs & Riley and Travelpro is that Travelpro’s suitcases and two or three times cheaper, and because of that also not as durable. That said, they’re still durable enough for frequent traveling.

Their suitcases are split between various collections, such as Maxlite 5, Platinum Elite, Crew 11, and others. All of their collections are backed up by their limited lifetime warranty, which covers defects in workmanship and materials.

Alone, this warranty isn’t too useful, because it doesn’t cover airline damage. That’s why in addition to their limited warranty , they also offer their “Trusted companion promise”, which also covers any airline damage and the shipping costs to and from the repair centers.

The duration of the “Trusted companion promise” varies between collections. On the Maxlite 5 collection, it lasts one year, on the Crew 11 three years, and on the Platinum Elite collection for a lifetime. So if you’re looking for the best possible warranty, definitely get something from the Platinum Elite collection.

6. Osprey (200$ – 350$)

Osprey is another great outdoor gear company , similar to Eagle Creek and Patagonia. Their products aren’t sleek, modern, or classic, which means that they’re probably not the right choice for business travelers. Instead, they’re all made in a rugged, outdoors-style look, which is great for long-term travelers. Although their main focus is backpacks, they also offer a large variety of softside suitcases, which are all protected by their “ All Mighty Guarantee. “

This lifetime warranty truly is All-Mighty, because it essentially covers everything, similar to Briggs & Riley. In their terms, they state that they’ll cover any functional defect for a lifetime , free of charge and regardless of the cause. You’ll just have to cover the shipping costs to the repair center.

It’s also worth noting that for this warranty to work, you actually don’t need to be the original owner of this bag, and you don’t need any proof of purchase. Just owning an Osprey product is enough. Their packs and suitcases also aren’t too expensive and with such an amazing warranty, we think that they’re an especially solid choice.

7. Thule (300$ – 550$)

Thule is another high-end outdoor gear company that makes rugged and durable products. Instead of focusing on tents, outdoor clothing, and outdoor accessories, they focus on backpacks, luggage, rooftop camping equipment, and various car racks for skiing, cycling, e.t.c. Their suitcases are minimal in design and professional enough to be used for business traveling. That said, they’re quite expensive, similar to Briggs & Riley or Nomatic.

The good thing is that their suitcases are protected by their limited lifetime warranty , which covers defects in material and workmanship for a lifetime. It’s not the best warranty out there because it doesn’t cover most causes, such as misuse, accidents, or airline damage. However, any clear and obvious defects will be fixed free of charge. 8. Nomatic (400$ – 600$)

Nomatic is a fairly new travel gear brand , established only in 2014 when they launched their first Kickstarter campaign for a well-designed and minimal wallet. Since then, they’ve launched other successful campaigns on Kickstarter and expanded their products into backpacks, luggage, messenger bags, watches, and other travel accessories. All of their products are cleverly designed, minimal, and very durable. That said, they definitely aren’t affordable.

And what’s even better, is that their soft goods and suitcases are protected by a really good lifetime warranty . Their warranty is pretty simple – they’ll fix all functional defects regardless of the cause. If the product is beyond repairs, they’ll send you a free replacement. The only thing that you’ll have to pay for is the shipping costs to the repair center.

So far, they offer only three variations on a single suitcase. That’s because they launched their first suitcase only recently. They’re much more popular in the digital nomad community with their well-designed and durable backpacks.

9. Red Oxx (100$ – 400$)

Red Oxx is a truly American luggage company that makes duffles, backpacks, packing cubes, and other packing accessories for sporting, camping, and traveling. All of their bags are handcrafted in Montana, USA, and nothing has been outsourced in other countries. Although they don’t currently offer any wheeled luggage, they offer a wide variety of travel duffles, backpacks, and messenger bags. They’re going for a more rugged, military look, instead of a classic and professional one.

What’s great about Red Oxx is that all of their gear is protected by their “No Bull” lifetime warranty . The warranty terms are quite simple – they’ll fix anything broken regardless of the cause, no questions asked. If the bag is beyond repairs, they’ll even provide a free replacement one time. The only thing that you’ll have to cover is the shipping costs to and from the repair centers.

What About Tumi, Rimowa, Victorinox, Samsonite, and Eddie Bauer?

As you can probably already tell, lifetime warranties don’t come cheap. Both for the customer and the brand. That’s why a lot of brands have abandoned their lifetime warranties because they couldn’t keep it up any further without making losses.

Tumi, Rimowa, Victorinox, and Samsonite have all offered lifetime warranties at some point, but no longer do so. Most notably, Rimowa and Tumi. A few years ago, both brands offered unconditional lifetime warranties, similar to Briggs & Riley, but both abandoned them.

And as for Eddie Bauer, they might still offer a lifetime warranty, but it has significantly dropped in quality. Eddie Bauer was established back in 1920 , and they were always known for their lifetime warranty. But since 2003, the company has gone through bankruptcy and multiple acquisitions, and a lot of people have been saying that they no longer stand behind their lifetime warranty. Right now, their warranty page only has one sentence of text, and no clear policies or timeframes are mentioned there. That’s why we wouldn’t trust their warranty actually being a proper “lifetime warranty” anymore.

What Does a Lifetime Warranty for Luggage Really Cover?

Luggage takes a beating. It's lobbed from the cargo hold to the runway in blizzards and monsoons, and wheeled mercilessly over cobblestones and off of high curbs. All of this abuse makes the lifetime warranties offered by some top-scoring luggage brands, including Away, Briggs & Riley, and Eagle Creek, definitely appealing. But what do they really cover?

In our most recent survey of more than 38,000 CR members, 30 percent had complaints about luggage, including broken zippers, handles, and wheels, split seams, and materials that wore out. The good news is that—generally speaking—lifetime warranties will cover all of those problems. But as with most warranties, there are exclusions.

Here are things to keep in mind when purchasing a bag with a lifetime warranty.

Exclusions. In general, lifetime warranties don't cover cosmetic damage, such as scuffs, stains, scratches, dents, and other "wear and tear" that doesn't affect the bag's functionality. And lifetime warranties sometimes apply only to the original owner. Away, for instance, doesn't cover bags purchased secondhand or from unauthorized retailers. Briggs & Riley and Eagle Creek, however, say they will repair their bags free of charge regardless of whether they were purchased new or used.

Repair vs. replacement. Companies generally reserve the right to repair a bag and will replace it only if a fix isn't possible. Replacement bags may be a similar but not identical model, and may also be a different color.

How long is a lifetime? Some lifetime warranties, such as Eagle Creek's, cover a bag only for its product life. In this case, a manufacturer may refuse to repair or replace a bag it determines has reached the end of that life. That means buying a suitcase with a lifetime warranty doesn't ensure you'll never have to purchase another one. Away and Briggs & Riley say that they place no such limitation on their warranties.

Shipping costs. Repair and replacement may be free; shipping may not be. Eagle Creek and Briggs & Riley, for instance, require consumers to pay for shipping a bag to their repair facilities but will pay the return shipping costs. Away will pay all shipping charges.

Proof of purchase. Away requires proof of purchase for a bag to be covered by its limited lifetime warranty. Briggs & Riley and Eagle Creek require no such documentation.

A lifetime limited warranty is limited to the terms of the manufacturer which you can usually find on the warranty page of their website.

Generally speaking, a lifetime limited warranty covers manufacturing defects from normal wear or normal use and will not cover things like accidental damage for example.

However, some luggage brands do stand by their limited lifetime warranty and even include some things that unconditional lifetime warranties normally include.

If you are ready to buy some lifetime guarantee luggage, then it is worth knowing about all the luggage brands that offer them, and which of the luggage brands provide the best lifetime warranties too.

Travelpro is one of the most popular luggage companies with those who travel frequently as they offer a range of durable but well-priced luggage.

You can pick up a duffle bag, large suitcase, or backpack for between $100 and $500. The more expensive the luggage the more durable it is and the better the warranty.

With Travelpro, all their luggage comes with a limited lifetime guarantee that only covers defects in material and workmanship, so it is not that useful when it comes to airline damage.

But, the company also offers a “ Trusted companion promise ” that covers your luggage for any airline damages to your luggage. The length of the promise is dependent on the collection you bought.

For example, the length of the Trusted companion promise is just one year for luggage in the cheaper Maxlite 5 collection but lasts for a lifetime for luggage bought in the Platinum Elite collection, which is much more expensive.

Briggs & Riley

Briggs & Riley is the number one luggage company for those who travel often. Most pilots, air stewards, and frequent flyers own Briggs & Riley luggage, but why?

Well, firstly their luggage is some of the most durable , it looks good and is extremely functional but is expensive ranging from $300 to $800 for a piece of luggage. Now, spending this much is worth it if you travel often and if you get a good warranty.

All Briggs & Riley suitcase with lifetime warranty are worthy of consideration, if you ask me. They will fix anything that breaks on your luggage during its lifetime such as fabric, handles, zippers, wheels, and more.

They do not care how the luggage got damaged, or who bought it, so long as it is Briggs & Riley luggage, the warranty applies and is transferred to whoever is holding the luggage.

You will have to cover the shipping costs to get the luggage to the repair center but they will cover the shipping costs back.

The only thing is that they do not cover cosmetic wear and tear with their lifetime guarantees, only functional ones.

Eagle Creek

Eagle Creek makes some very stylish backpacks, packing cubes, and soft suitcases that suit the outdoors market more than the executive business traveler.

Eagle Creek luggage is super durable and worth the expense as it includes the Eagle Creek No Matter What lifetime warranty.

This warranty covers all defects to workmanship and materials for a lifetime, no matter what caused the defects. Basically, if the luggage is salvageable, it will be fixed under the luggage warranty.

But, if your Eagle Creek bag is at the end of the road, they will say it has reached the end of its lifetime and encourage you to buy a new bag.

Osprey makes some great luggage aimed towards the outdoor market that is both rugged and very functional. Osprey’s specialty lies in backpacks but you can also find duffles, soft suitcases, and lots more for a pretty reasonable price considering the quality.

Every Osprey bag, no matter the price, comes with their All Mighty Guarantee which is a pretty fantastic lifetime warranty.

The Osprey warranty is pretty much the same as Briggs & Riley. Osprey will fix anything regardless of how it happened for whoever is holding the bag. It doesn’t matter who bought the bag, you do not need a receipt, so long as you have an Osprey bag in your possession, it is covered.

All you have to do is pay for the shipping costs to get the bag to their repair center. In terms of value for money vs warranty, Osprey is definitely one of the best.

Patagonia is a very well-known outdoor brand that also makes some great luggage. Their waterproof duffle bags are epic if you are interested!

With every Patagonia product comes the Patagonia “Ironclad” lifetime warranty which is crystal clear when it comes to the terms.

Patagonia will repair everything they make, for a lifetime for free, or for a small charge if it is due to wear and tear. You can even grab a self-repair kit if the breakage is simple to fix and you need to use your gear right away.

Away is a very popular manufacturer of “smart luggage” featuring things like in-built chargers and intelligent packing compartments.

Their luggage is super tough, very functional, and comes with a great lifetime warranty too. It covers everything but cosmetic wear and tear.

So any cracks, broken wheels, zippers, etc will be fixed so long as the damage occurs during normal use, which includes traveling via all modes of transport.

All shipping costs are also covered by the company but you do need to provide proof of purchase for the warranty to be valid.

Nomatic is quite new to the luggage market but is making its mark pretty quickly. They design and make super durable, sleek, functional backpacks, suitcases, bags, and more.

However, Nomatic luggage is also rather expensive but it does come with an epic lifetime warranty.

No matter what happens to your luggage, they will fix it for free and if they can not fix it, send you a brand new one to replace it. All you have to cover is the shipping costs.

Red Oxx makes all its luggage in the US and does not outsource one single part of its business. They make great backpacks, duffles, and more for the outdoors from their base in Montana.

Every bit of luggage Red Oxx makes is covered by their No Bull Lifetime Warranty. With their warranty, they will fix any damage no matter how it happened, and if they can not fix it, give you a replacement for free – you only get one replacement though.

You will have to cover the shipping costs for the repairs/replacements though.

Thule is another excellent luggage company that makes super-durable backpacks, duffels, suitcases, and more items for use in the outdoors.

Being so tough and durable their luggage is on the very expensive side and their warranty isn’t quite good enough for the price in my eyes.

The Thule lifetime warranty only covers defects in material and workmanship. It does not cover damage from airlines, travel, etc.

Tom Bihn makes all kinds of duffles, backpacks, packing cubes, and other smaller bags too with both great style and durability.

Their lifetime warranty only covers material and workmanship defects and no more. They will, however, repair a damaged bit of luggage for a small fee so you can continue to use their luggage and not replace it with new luggage.

This limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship that negatively impact the functional performance of the product, including:

Normal wear and tear.

Normal wear and tear: Luggage is subject to normal wear and tear that occurs with regular use, including mishandling during transit. This may result in scuffs, scratches, or minor abrasions on the luggage's surface. Such wear and tear are considered natural and are not covered under warranty or eligible for replacement.
Cracks or tears on luggage body: Damage such as cracks or tears on the luggage body that occur from regular use, impacts, or excessive weight of packed items are not covered under warranty. It is the responsibility of the user to handle the luggage with care to minimize the risk of such damage.

Your Away luggage is covered by a lifetime limited warranty. This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary by state, province, or country.

A. Products Covered by this Limited Warranty

This limited warranty extends to polycarbonate, aluminum, and nylon luggage manufactured by JRSK, Inc. (“Away”) and purchased directly from Away or Away’s authorized retailers (the “Luggage”). Some parts of this limited warranty also extend to batteries sold with Luggage or separately (“Batteries”). Luggage is designed to be used for travel by air, car, train, boat, and foot. This Warranty does not cover your Luggage if you use it in a manner incompatible with that intended design.

B. Who this Warranty Extends To

This limited warranty extends to the original purchaser of any Luggage or, in the case of a gift, the original recipient of the Luggage. The “original purchaser,” for the purposes of this warranty, is the first purchaser of the Luggage from Away or an Away authorized retailer. The “original recipient” for purposes of this warranty, is the first receiver of Luggage purchased as a gift from Away or an Away authorized retailer. All Away warranties, including any implied warranties, are valid only for the period of time the Luggage is owned by the original purchaser/ recipient of the Luggage. A COPY OF THE PURCHASE RECEIPT IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WARRANTY APPLICABILITY.

Away limited warranties are not transferable and not applicable to use of the Luggage for commercial or rental purposes.

C. Away's Limited Warranty and Responsibilities

Away warrants the Luggage in its original packaging sold to you against the defects in material and workmanship set forth below (“Defects”) forever, when the Luggage is used normally for its intended purposes.

D. What this Lifetime Limited Warranty Covers

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY APPLIES TO THE FOLLOWING DEFECTS:

Cracks or breaks in the shell
Wheels, handles, or telescoping handles that break off and are no longer usable
Zippers that can no longer be opened or closed
Fabric tears that render front pocket fabric non-functional

THIS LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THE FOLLOWING:

“Cosmetic Damage” which is defined as scratches, dents, dings, scuffs, stains, color changes, normal wear and tear, technological obsolescence, or other non-functional changes in the appearance of the product that occur during normal handling and use of Luggage by any party and which do not impair the functionality of the product as luggage. Aluminum Luggage is particularly susceptible to Cosmetic Damage.
Replacement of any non-defective pieces in the luggage (for example, if you purchase Luggage with multiple components and only one component is defective, then we will only replace the defective component).
Any luggage (whether manufactured by Away or not) sold by resellers who are not authorized retailers.
Luggage sold “as-is”, “preconditioned”, “reconditioned”, “used”, “comfort return”, “returned”, “previously owned”, or any other similar wording indicating that the Luggage is not “new” or of “first quality”, or has previously been purchased or used by another consumer.
Loss of functionality of the battery, which is covered solely by the Electronics Two Year Limited Warranty.
Loss of functionality due to consumers being locked out of their Luggage. See “Your Responsibilities” below for information regarding assistance with locked Luggage.

In the event of a Defect, Away’s sole and exclusive liability and your sole remedy under this limited warranty will be, at Away’s option, to provide repaired or replacement Luggage, subject to your fulfillment of “Your Responsibilities” below. Replacement Luggage may be provided in a color different from the Luggage you originally purchased. For limited edition, discontinued or out-of-stock Luggage covered under the limited warranty, Away guarantees only replacement of a product with equal or greater retail value and does not guarantee exact replacement of the same limited edition, discontinued or out-of-stock item.

E. Your Responsibilities

In the event of a Defect and in order to get the benefit of this limited warranty, you must return your Luggage to Away and provide Away with proof of the original date of purchase. Should shipping costs be required to return your Luggage, you will not be responsible for those costs. Evidence of a Defect and any claims must be sent to the address set forth at the end of this limited warranty. Away will repair or replace (as applicable) and ship your Luggage back to you within 90 days of receiving your original Luggage. You will not be responsible for any shipping costs associated with shipping replaced or repaired Luggage. Replaced or repaired Luggage is subject to the same limited warranty as the original Luggage. Luggage that is locked can be shipped to an Away location to be unlocked by Away personnel. You will be responsible for any shipping and handling costs.

F. Disclaimer, Limitation on Liability

TO THE EXTENT PERMISSIBLE BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE LUGGAGE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND THIS WARRANTY AND ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES ARE YOUR EXCLUSIVE WARRANTIES AND REPLACE ALL OTHER WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS ON HOW LONG AN IMPLIED WARRANTY LASTS, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. SOME STATES OR OTHER JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO THE ABOVE EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. YOU MAY ALSO HAVE OTHER RIGHTS THAT VARY FROM STATE TO STATE AND JURISDICTION TO JURISDICTION. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW AND EXCEPT AS SET FORTH IN THIS LIMITED WARRANTY, IN NO EVENT WILL AWAY OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR PROCUREMENT OF SUBSTITUTE PRODUCTS OR OTHER SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR INDIRECT DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THE LUGGAGE OR ITS USE BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY, WHETHER UNDER THEORY OF CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), INDEMNITY, PRODUCT LIABILITY OR OTHERWISE. THIS LIMITATION WILL APPLY EVEN IF AWAY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF SUCH DAMAGES AND NOTWITHSTANDING THE FAILURE OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF ANY LIMITED REMEDY. AWAY’S TOTAL LIABILITY WILL NOT EXCEED THE PURCHASE PRICE PAID FOR THE LUGGAGE GIVING RISE TO SUCH LIABILITY. SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

G. Arbitration

G1. In the event a dispute arises between you and Away arising out of this Limited Warranty (“ Dispute ”), such Dispute will be determined and settled solely by binding, individual arbitration and not in a class, representative or consolidated action or proceeding . You and Away agree that the U.S. Federal Arbitration Act governs the interpretation and enforcement of this Limited Warranty, and that you and Away are each waiving the right to a trial by jury or to participate in a class action.

G2. As limited exceptions to Section G1 above: (i) you may seek to resolve a Dispute in small claims court if it qualifies; and (ii) we each retain the right to seek injunctive or other equitable relief from a court to prevent (or enjoin) the infringement or misappropriation of our intellectual property rights.

G3. The arbitration will be conducted by the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) under its Consumer Arbitration Rules (the “AAA Rules”) then in effect, except as modified by this Limited Warranty. The AAA Rules are available at www.adr.org or by calling 1-800-778-7879. A party who wishes to start arbitration must submit a written Demand for Arbitration to AAA and give notice to the other party as specified in the AAA Rules. The AAA provides a form Demand for Arbitration at www.adr.org. If your claim is for U.S. $10,000 or less, you may choose whether the arbitration will be conducted solely on the basis of documents submitted to the arbitrator, through a telephonic or video-conference hearing, or by an in-person hearing as established by the AAA Rules. If your claim exceeds U.S. $10,000, the right to a hearing will be determined by the AAA Rules. Any arbitration hearings will take place in the county (or parish) where you live, unless we both agree to a different location. The parties agree that the arbitrator shall have exclusive authority to decide all issues relating to the interpretation, applicability, enforceability and scope of this arbitration agreement.

G4. Payment of all filing, administration and arbitrator fees will be governed by the AAA Rules. We’ll pay for all filing, administration and arbitrator fees and expenses if your Dispute is for less than $10,000, unless the arbitrator finds your Dispute frivolous. If we prevail in arbitration we’ll pay all of our attorneys’ fees and costs and won’t seek to recover them from you. If you prevail in arbitration you will be entitled to an award of attorneys’ fees and expenses to the extent provided under applicable law.

G5. YOU AND AWAY AGREE THAT EACH MAY BRING CLAIMS AGAINST THE OTHER ONLY IN YOUR OR ITS INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY, AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY PURPORTED CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PROCEEDING. Further, if the parties’ Dispute is resolved through arbitration, the arbitrator may not consolidate another person's claims with your claims, and may not otherwise preside over any form of a representative or class proceeding. If this specific provision is found to be unenforceable, then the entirety of this Arbitration section shall be null and void.

G6. With the exception of any of the provisions in Section G5 of this Limited Warranty ("Class Action Waiver"), if an arbitrator or court of competent jurisdiction decides that any part of this Limited Warranty is invalid or unenforceable, the other parts of Limited Warranty will still apply.

G7. You must seek arbitration for disputes arising out of this Limited Warranty prior to exercising any rights or seeking any remedies created by the Title I of the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act.

H. Governing Law and Forum Choice

This Limited Warranty and any action related thereto will be governed by the Federal Arbitration Act, federal arbitration law, and the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict of laws provisions. Except as otherwise expressly set forth in Section G “Arbitration” the exclusive jurisdiction for all Disputes that you and Away are not required to arbitrate will be the state and federal courts located in the State of New York, and you and Away each waive any objection to jurisdiction and venue in such courts

Away Electronics Two Year Limited Warranty

The battery in your Away luggage is covered by a two year limited warranty. This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary by state, province, or country.

This limited warranty extends to batteries manufactured by JRSK, Inc. (“Away”) and purchased directly from Away or Away’s authorized retailers, including any cables or adapters sold or packaged with the batteries (collectively, the “Batteries”). The Battery is designed to be used in Luggage for travel by air, car, train, boat, and foot. This Warranty does not cover your Battery if you use it in a manner incompatible with that intended design.

This limited warranty extends to the original purchaser of any Battery (whether the Battery is contained within Luggage or sold separately) or, in the case of a gift, the original recipient of the Battery. The “original purchaser,” for the purposes of this warranty, is the first purchaser of the Battery from Away or an Away authorized retailer. The “original recipient” for purposes of this warranty, is the first recipient of the Battery purchased as a gift from Away or an Away authorized retailer. All Away warranties, including any implied warranties, are valid only for the period of time the Battery is owned by the original purchaser/ recipient of the Battery. A COPY OF THE PURCHASE RECEIPT IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WARRANTY APPLICABILITY.

All Away limited warranties are not transferable and are not applicable to Batteries used for commercial or rental purposes, whether as stand-alone items or contained in Luggage used for such purposes.

Away warrants the Battery in its original packaging sold to you against the defects in material and workmanship set forth below (“Defects”) for a period of two years from the time your Luggage is purchased by you, whether the Battery is contained within Luggage or sold separately, only if the Battery and Luggage (if applicable) are used normally for its intended purposes.

D. What this Limited Warranty Covers

The battery no longer holding a charge
The battery no longer charging compatible devices

This limited lifetime warranty does not cover the following:

Perceived “slowness” of charging
Cosmetic Damage to the Battery
Battery functionality if Battery is charged using an adapter or cord that is not provided by Away
Battery functionality if the Battery or Luggage (if applicable) is abused beyond the normal wear and tear expected of carry-on luggage or if either of them are used other than for the intended purposes set forth above

In the event of a Defect, Away’s sole and exclusive liability and your sole remedy under this limited warranty will be, at Away’s option, to provide a repaired or replacement Battery, subject to your fulfillment of “Your Responsibilities” below. Replacement Batteries may be provided in a color different from any Defective Battery use.

In the event of a Defect and in order to get the benefit of this limited warranty, you must return your Battery to Away and provide Away with proof of the original date of purchase. Should shipping costs be required to return your Battery, you will not be responsible for those costs. Evidence of a Defect and any claims must be sent to the address set forth at the end of this limited warranty. Away will repair or replace (as applicable) and ship your Battery to you within 90 days of receiving your original Battery. You will not be responsible for any shipping costs associated with shipping replaced or repaired Battery. Replaced or repaired Batteries are subject to the same limited warranty as the original Battery (whether the Battery is contained within Luggage or sold separately). For example, if you obtain a replaced or repaired Battery, then the warranty term of the replaced or repaired Battery begins from the date of purchase of the original Battery (whether the Battery is contained within Luggage or sold separately).

Away Soft Goods Limited Warranty

This limited warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary by state, province, or country.

This limited warranty extends to non-hard shell luggage products manufactured by JRSK, Inc. (“Away”) which are not covered under any other warranty by Away and are purchased directly from Away or Away’s authorized retailers, including, but not limited to the Insider Packing Cubes, the Centerfold Garment Sleeve, the Dopp Kit, the Everywhere Bag, and the Garment Bag (“Soft Goods”). Soft Goods are designed to be used for travel by air, car, train, boat, and foot. This warranty does not cover your product if you use it in a manner incompatible with that intended design or if you fail to follow the care instructions provided with the product.

This limited warranty extends to the original purchaser of any Soft Goods or, in the case of a gift, the original recipient of the Soft Goods. The “original purchaser,” for the purposes of this warranty, is the first purchaser of the Soft Goods from Away or an Away authorized retailer. The “original recipient” for purposes of this warranty, is the first recipient of Soft Goods purchased as a gift from Away or an Away authorized retailer. All Away warranties, including any implied warranties, are valid only for the period of time the Soft Goods are owned by the original purchaser/ recipient of the Soft Goods. A COPY OF THE PURCHASE RECEIPT IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WARRANTY APPLICABILITY.

Away limited warranties are not transferable and not applicable to use of the Soft Goods for commercial or rental purposes.

Away warrants the Soft Goods in their original packaging sold to you against the defects in material and workmanship set forth below (“Defects”) for a period of one year, from the time you purchase your Soft Goods, when the Soft Goods are used normally for their intended purposes and the applicable care instructions are followed. If applicable law requires a warranty period longer than set out in this section, your warranty will be extended for such time period and to the extent required by law.

THIS LIMITED WARRANTY APPLIES TO THE FOLLOWING DEFECTS THAT RENDER THE PRODUCT NON-FUNCTIONAL:

Manufacturing defects
Handles that are ripped or torn and are no longer usable
Fabric tears that render the product non-functional

This limited one-year warranty does not cover the following:

“Cosmetic Damage” which is defined as pilling, catches in the fabric, stains, color changes, normal wear and tear, technological obsolescence, or other non-functional changes in the appearance of the product that occur during normal handling and use of Soft Goods by any party and which do not impair the functionality of the product.
Changes in fabric that are inherent in the normal use of the Soft Goods, such as the softening of leather or catches in tweed fabric.
Chipping of metal or painted elements in or on the Soft Goods.
Replacement of any non-defective pieces in the product or set of products you purchased (for example, if you purchase a product with multiple components or pieces, such as a set of Insider Packing Cubes, and only one component is defective, then we will only replace the defective component).
Any Soft Goods (whether manufactured by Away or not) sold by resellers who are not authorized retailers.
Soft Goods sold “as-is”, “preconditioned”, “reconditioned”, “used”, “comfort return”, “returned”, “previously owned”, or any other similar wording indicating that the Soft Goods are not “new” or of “first quality”, or has previously been purchased or used by another consumer.

In the event of a Defect and in order to get the benefit of this limited warranty, you must return your Soft Goods to Away and provide Away with proof of the original date of purchase. Should shipping costs be required to return your Soft Goods, you will not be responsible for those costs. Evidence of a Defect and any claims must be sent to the address set forth at the end of this limited warranty. Away will repair or replace (as applicable) and ship your Soft Goods back to you within 90 days of receiving your original Soft Goods. You will not be responsible for any shipping costs associated with shipping replaced or repaired Soft Goods.

Replaced or repaired Soft Goods are subject to the same limited warranty as the original Soft Goods for the remaining duration of the original warranty only.

Travelpro Luggage Overview

Travelpro offers a variety of soft and hardside suitcases , along with other bags and travel accessories like backpacks, packing cubes and duffels. The brand's best-selling Platinum Elite collection is one of our favorite luggage lines for business trips and for those who travel regularly because of their top-of-the-line construction and functional features like easy-to-access external pockets, self-aligning wheels and durable nylon material.

Travelpro is best known for its softside suitcases. The Platinum Elite carry-on and checked bags use a heavyweight nylon fabric that performed well in our abrasion assessments , resisting wear and tear after being rubbed back and forth 15,000 times by our Wyzenbeek abrasion tester, which simulates extended use. Plus, the material is covered in DuraGuard, a water and stain-resistant coating that helps keep your luggage in tip-top shape even with lots of use. We gave the zippers perfect scores for water resistance during our tests.

When we released the carry-on and checked bags repeatedly at different angles from our drop tester (pictured), we were impressed by how well the luggage held up, without major damage to the bags or breakage of the wheels or handles. After one roundtrip journey on an airline, I did notice some small marks and scratches on the plastic components surrounding the telescopic handle on the checked bag.

Your carry-on bag should hold everything you need for a short getaway, and Travelpro's Platinum Elite carry-on has a spacious interior with a capacity of 46L — 5 to 10L more packing space than some other carry-ons from popular brands we've tested. The bag unzips to reveal one large compartment to store all of your belongings (pictured), and it's full of helpful features to simplify packing.

One tester shared, "This had better organization than any other suitcase I’ve tried." When I packed the suitcase in the Textiles Lab, I was able to fit my standard packing load for a weekend trip's worth of clothing, shoes and accessories with ease, and there was room to spare. The softside material is flexible, so you can really fill it to the brim.

There's a removable garment bag, a wet bag for toiletries, several built-in mesh accessory pockets and four external pockets, including one that can hold up to a 15-inch laptop and another to store a portable power bank for convenient recharging on the go. To secure your things in place, there's an adjustable compression panel, and if you tend to overpack your bags like me, you'll love the 2-inch expansion system that's tapered to prevent the suitcase from getting top-heavy and tipping over.

The medium checked bag has 97L of packing space (more than double the space of the carry-on) , making it the perfect pick for a long trip or a family vacation. At 10 lbs, it weighs more than some other medium checked bags we've tested, which eats into the 50 lb weight restriction set by most airlines.

Like the carry-on, it unzips to one large packing space (pictured) and is equipped with lots of compartments for organized storage like a larger removable wet bag, mesh pockets and a built-in suiter. One tester shared, "It helped keep me organized and made it much easier to find what I needed." There are two roomy external pockets to stash travel essentials, as well. This bag also has adjustable compression panels for security, and it offers 2 inches of zippered expansion for additional room.

Ease of Use

The telescopic handles on the Platinum Elite bags are contoured for a better grip (pictured). I was impressed by how easy it was to raise and lower the carry-on's telescopic handle without it jamming on the way up or down. The handle on the checked bag doesn't lift quite as smoothly, but it was incredibly sturdy and didn't wobble when fully extended. The carrying handles on both bags are made of genuine leather and aren't too tight, so it's simple to lift the bags into an overhead bin or from the luggage carousel.

A common tester complaint about Travelpro's Platinum Elite suitcases is they're a little more difficult to steer than other suitcases we've tested. The bags have magnetic, self-aligning spinner wheels that roll smoothly and glide over different surfaces like tile, wood and carpeting, but when I pulled the suitcases, they always drifted towards me instead of rolling alongside me, so I regularly had to redirect them.

The zippers are heavyweight and easy to pull, thanks to their contoured design, and they moved effortlessly along the track without sticking at the corners of the bag or getting caught on the material.

Our luggage is rigorously tested to ensure it meets not only industry standards but more importantly withstands the travel needs of our customers. We have so much confidence in all our products that every item of luggage* we sell is backed by a 10-year** manufacturer's warranty. This warranty provides reassurance that should any fault or defect become apparent during the warranty period we will endeavour to repair, provide new parts, or replace your luggage if we cannot repair or spare parts cannot be obtained. Please ensure you keep the warranty hangtag and proof of purchase such as a till receipt, invoice, or an online order confirmation (Bank/credit card statements are not accepted as proof of purchase), as without which, claims will not be valid. What's covered by the warranty?

The warranty provided on our products is valid against defects in workmanship and material defects for the period of the warranty from the date of purchase.

Allowing for reasonable wear and tear, should any defect in workmanship become apparent during the warranty period, we will endeavour to repair, provide new parts, or replace your luggage if we cannot repair or spare parts cannot be obtained. (Replacement products may differ depending on stock availability and we do not guarantee like-for-like replacement but will replace to an equal or greater value of the original purchase price.)

Replacement products will be covered by the warranty equal to the length of time remaining on the warranty of your original purchase.

Please Note: Warranty claims can take up to 28 business days to complete upon receipt of all warranty information requested.

Warranty claims are processed in order of receipt, and we ask for your patience in peak travel periods.

What's not covered by the warranty?

Our warranty covers against defects in workmanship and material, but we are unable to take responsibility for any damage that may arise due to normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage, misuse, accident, abuse, exposure to extreme temperatures, acids or solvents or mishandling including handling by third parties.

The Warranty only extends to the original owner of the item.

The warranty does not extend to include:

- Replacement of other items that may have been purchased as part of a set - Incidental or consequential damages, such as damage to or loss of the contents of a bag, loss of use, loss of time, or similar expenses - Combination lock issues due to the incorrect setting of a combination lock, forgetting the combination lock number or deliberately forcing the lock open - Zippers that have been damaged due to force - Products purchased from unauthorised it luggage retailers

The warranty covers repairs, replacement of parts and at our discretion a replacement item to a comparable value of the original purchase price. Shipping Fees may apply.

What happens if an airline damages my case?

Airline baggage handling is the most common cause of damage to luggage.

it luggage is not responsible for any damage that occurs whilst your luggage is in transit and we recommend that such damage is reported to the airline or carrier as soon as it is discovered.

Inspect your product immediately after receiving it from the transit company. Airline damages can be claimed from the respective airline you are travelling with.

Claims need to be registered before leaving the airport at the airline customer service desk.

Details will be requested from you such as:

- Passenger name and date of flight - Flight number - Ticket number - Details of damage with a picture

Ensure you receive an acknowledgement receipt.

Do I need to register my item to qualify for a 10-year warranty?

There is no need to register to validate the warranty.

All warranty claims must be supported by the Warranty hangtag and be accompanied by proof of purchase such as a till receipt, invoice, or digital order confirmation, without which, claims will not be valid.

Please note: bank/credit card statements are not accepted as proof of purchase.

How do I make a claim?

If you purchased your product from this website, please complete the warranty form on our contact us page. If your product was purchased within the last 12 months , the warranty lies with the retailer during this period. Your suitcase, therefore, is to be returned to the store with your proof of purchase. If it is a manufacturing fault, they should be able to provide you with a replacement or refund.

If you purchased your product more than 12 months ago, please complete the warranty form on our contact us page with all relevant information and photography to start the claim process.

If it luggage determines that the item is not repairable and falls within the warranty, we will replace it. Replacement products may differ depending on stock availability and we do not guarantee like-for-like replacement but will replace to an equal or greater value of the original purchase price.

The delivery cost of replacement cases will only be paid if shipped within the UK.

Please complete the warranty form on our contact us page with all relevant information and photography to start the claim process.

If it luggage determines that your claim is valid within the terms of our warranty, we will repair, provide new parts, or replace your luggage.

While it luggage USA Ltd. will repair, or replace your luggage at our expense, if a defect in workmanship is found, the consumer is responsible for all freight charges as this guarantee does not cover transportation costs. Shipment of replacement bags or parts can be made to U.S. and Canadian addresses only (no PO or APO addresses).

This guarantee gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.

Products deemed out of warranty may still be eligible for repairs. However, the customer will be responsible for the repair costs and shipping fees to and from our repair facility. In the case of approved replacements, if the product is no longer available or is out of stock, it will be replaced by an equivalent price product. If the customer wishes to upgrade and buy any other expensive product, the customer will be required to pay the difference. If the customer wishes to buy a low-cost product, a credit note or gift card for the difference shall be provided.

Replacement for warranty-approved bags will be done after damaged bags are provided to it luggage.

In cities, where we do not have our office or vendors, the customer shall courier the bag for any service required to our facility at their own cost. The cost of return shipment post-repair will be borne by it luggage.

TCL reserves the right to make the final judgment on all claims. The warranty does not cover transportation charges. It is the customers' obligation to prepay for shipping and handling of goods. Also, the warranty is limited to the value of the product itself. DO NOT send luggage directly to Travelers Club Office.

The warranty is only valid for the continental 48 states. The warranty does not cover Hawaii, Alaska, and countries outside of the United States.

For non-defective items, a 15% restocking fee will apply to the customers.

Within the lineup, what Away suitcase should you buy? There's now a handful of offerings—some big checked luggage pieces , expandable carry-ons , packable tote bags , and travel backpacks . We've tried pretty much all of it, so we felt primed to give you a little rundown. This is our handy shopping guide to the lineup. These are the six best Away suitcases, the ones we'd tell you to buy.

If there were ever an Away suitcase we'd say everyone should buy, it'd be this one. The Carry-On Flex is the perfect middle ground within the Away lineup. It's the best thing the brand makes.

It's light, fits in an overhead bin, and can pack a weekend's worth of clothes. Then, if you're bringing home extra stuff, a second zipper expands the bag to about the same size as the Bigger Carry On . Away says unzipping the expanding zipper gives you an extra 2.25" of space, but I don't know what the fuck that means. In practice, it's given me space for an extra outfit or two, a handful of t-shirts, or a bunch of underwear. Think of it as getting an extra day or two into a suitcase.

I do have to address one thing, though. When that second zipper is expanded, there is the chance that your plane might not have enough overhead space. Personally, it's never happened to me, even on tiny regional flights. But just know it's a possibility.

For checked luggage, I say go for the Trunk. Some people claim it's too big, but with checked luggage that's not really your problem. Sure, if you've got a lot of walking to do in a city, it a smaller bag would be nice. But, if you're doing a long stay anywhere, you need space. This has a ton of it.

The main design benefit of the Trunk is the deeper main compartment. It's a gem when you're traveling with a lot of footwear, especially if you've got boots and don't want to wear them on the flight.

Among the checked sizes that Away sells, the Medium Flex is the most versatile. Away says it's big enough for one to two weeks' worth of clothing, but it can extend into the two-and-a-half or three weeks range if you're economical.

It's not a massive bag, though. Cutting a few inches off in all directions has a real impact. It doesn't get heavy on the wheels, and you can maneuver it through a city center somewhat comfortably. Add the ability to flex up in size, and you've just got a great do-it-all checked bag.

If you like all the space of the trunk but prefer the shape of a case, we'd recommend the Large Flex. It's got slightly less space than the trunk, but you're still able to pack multiple weeks' worth of clothes.

As I've already said (and will continue to say) we love the ability to expand and compress the flex options. The Large Flex gives you just under two inches of expanded space, which equals another couple of days worth of clothing.

The only downside to this suitcase is how wide the square shape makes it. The trunk is tall and slim, which makes it a bit easier to move around. The Large Flex is incredibly square, which makes it a bit more cumbersome in crowded areas.

Away's packable tote bag takes the flex concept in a different direction. On the way to your destination, it's not even big enough to factor into how you pack. It stuffs down into a sack that you can toss away in the bottom of a different bag. On the way home, expand it into a 44L tote to use as a personal item.

This one is a great option for the traveler that brings a lot of souvenirs home, or it's an option if you find yourself getting lazy with return flight packing. And beyond all that, it's just nice to know you've got extra packing space stored away.

If we're talking Away travel gear, we are of course going to call out the brand's cult favorite backpack. In New York City, I'll see five finance guys a day with this backpack. It's not a great look for a formal job, but it's the perfect backpack for travel.

The Everywehere Zip is sleek, especially if you opt for the monochrome black version. It's practical, with plenty of compartments and a trolley sleeve. The long zipper and elasticized opening allows it to open quite wide, so you can really take advantage of every bit of space. It's the perfect personal item, especially for a work trip.

Things to Consider When Buying Away Luggage

What Away Does Best

The brand is amazing with price v.s. quality. It's where Away really shines. Among the mid-tier luggage brands, no other makes suitcases as durable as Away.
It makes incredible expanding options. Away's Flex series is one of our favorite travel lines. Plenty of brands make expandable suitcases, but the nylon Away uses is just a cut above.

The suitcases scuff really easily. If you lean into the world traveller look, it's fine. If you want to keep it spotless, you'll have to do some scrubbing.

What fliers need to know about new refund rules for airlines

Starting in about six months, u.s. airlines will have to offer customers cash refunds before vouchers.

New federal rules for airlines will go into effect later this year, giving travelers a better picture of the full cost of flights before they book — and getting them an easier refund if things go awry.

After a process that lasted more than a year, the Biden administration announced the rules on passenger protections Wednesday.

“This is a big day for America’s flying public,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a news conference at Reagan National Airport.

While the trade group Airlines for America said its members “abide by — and frequently exceed — DOT regulations regarding consumer protections,” consumer advocates praised the administration’s move.

“These rules are not only critical but also common sense,” said William McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, who spoke at Wednesday’s event.

Most new rules go into effect in the fall

At the event Wednesday, Buttigieg said that “the bulk of these protections” will go into effect in about six months. Others will start in a year.

That means refund rules that get customers automatic cash refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change flights won’t be in place during the busy summer travel season. But they should be set in time for the Thanksgiving and winter holiday season rush.

Buttigieg said that the department expects airlines to take some time to develop the processes to return cash to travelers, but added that he doesn’t want them to drag their feet.

“They don’t have to wait the number of months that it’ll technically take for this to go into effect,” Buttigieg said Wednesday. “They could and should be doing this right now.”

You should get refunds without having to ask

Instead of first offering a voucher or credit, airlines “must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops,” the Transportation Department says. The refunds need to be issued within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days when bought through other methods.

However a traveler originally paid is the way the refund needs to be issued, the rule says, whether that’s by credit card or airline miles . Other types of compensation are allowed only if a passenger chooses one of those alternatives.

“No more defaulting to vouchers or credits when consumers may not even realize that they were entitled to cash,” Buttigieg said.

You can still choose to be rebooked

If travelers’ flights have been canceled or significantly changed, they can still continue with their trip. Passengers are only eligible for a refund if they have declined to accept alternative transportation.

Airlines will have to pay for delayed bags and broken WiFi

There are many ways for a trip to go awry, and the new rules cover more than just a late or canceled flight.

If a checked bag isn’t delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving at the gate, or within 15 to 30 hours of an international flight arriving, depending on how long that flight is, passengers will be entitled to a refund of their checked-bag fee. They will need to file a mishandled baggage report.

Refunds will also be given if passengers pay for a service such as WiFi, seat selection or in-flight entertainment and the airline fails to provide.

‘Significant’ changes will be the same for all airlines

Automatic cash refunds are due to passengers if their flight experiences a “significant change.” But what does that mean? Previously, the definition could vary from airline to airline.

The new rules provide some consistency. A change is considered significant if a departure or arrival is different by more than three hours for domestic flights or six hours for international trips.

Other changes considered significant: the departure or arrival is from a different airport; there are more connections; passengers are downgraded to a lower class; or service or flights are on planes that are less accessible for a person with a disability.

No more hidden fees for bags and seat selection

The rule on extra fees — what the Biden administration refers to as “surprise junk fees in air travel” — will require airlines and online travel booking sites to disclose up front the fees for a checked bag, carry-on bag, reservation change and reservation cancellation. Those fees must be clearly noted and not shown through a hyperlink, the rule says.

Consumers must also be informed that they don’t have to pay for a seat assignment to travel and that a seat will be provided without an additional price.

“Healthy competition requires that, as a consumer, you comparison shop, which means knowing the real price of a trip before and not after you buy,” Buttigieg said. “Airlines will now be required to show you these costs up front, so you have all the information you need to decide what travel option is best for you.”

Travelers can either search without providing their personal information to see standard fees or, after entering their information, see more tailored fees that might apply given their military status, frequent-flier membership or credit card use.

“The final rule puts an end to the bait-and-switch tactics some airlines use to disguise the true cost of discounted flights,” the Transportation Department said in a news release. “Prior to the rule, some airlines were offering deceptive discounts that consumers may have believed applied to the full fare that was being advertised but only applied to a small portion of the ticket price.”

You will still have to report complaints

Buttigieg said the main way for the department to find out about a violation of the rules is when people submit complaints through the site flightrights.gov . But he said he hopes that by making refunds automatic, there will be less need for complaints — and more flexibility for employees to perform audits or spot-checks of airline compliance.

Europe-style compensation is still not in the rules

Some travelers heading to or from Europe who experience delays under certain circumstances are entitled to compensation worth more than $600. That kind of system does not exist for domestic flights in the United States, but Buttigieg said it is on the agenda.

“On compensation, we continue to develop that — and to be clear, with this rule on the books, that does not stop or slow the progress that we’re driving in terms of a compensation rule,” he said.
