The Perfect Illustration for God's Outrageous Grace — An Excerpt from “PROOF”

trip of grace

Sometimes it’s hard being a teacher, particularly when you’re looking for that  one  story to illustrate your main idea. That’s why we’ve gifted you your next illustration! The next time you’re teaching on grace, here’s the perfect object lesson.  It’s an excerpt from  PROOF , a paradigm-shifting book on God’s outrageous, irresistible grace.

Below co-author Timothy Paul Jones tells the story of taking his adopted daughter to Disney World. I won’t ruin it for you, but for years she was denied going by her original adoptive parents. When she finally experienced the Magic Kingdom, here was her response:

“Daddy, I finally got to go to Disney World. But it wasn’t because I was good; it’s because I’m yours.” (83)

Read the rest of the story to fully grasp this poignant response, and why it’s the prefect illustration for your next teaching on grace.

Oh, and you’re welcome!

“Because I’m Yours” I never dreamed that taking a child to Disney World could be so difficult — or that such a trip could teach me so much about God’s outrageous grace. Our middle daughter had been previously adopted by another family. I [Timothy] am sure this couple had the best of intentions, but they never quite integrated the adopted child into their family of biological children. After a couple of rough years, they dissolved the adoption, and we ended up welcoming an eight-year-old girl into our home. For one reason or another, whenever our daughter’s previous family vacationed at Disney World, they took their biological children with them, but they left their adopted daughter with a family friend. Usually — at least in the child’s mind — this happened because she did something wrong that precluded her presence on the trip. And so, by the time we adopted our daughter, she had seen many pictures of Disney World and she had heard about the rides and the characters and the parades. But when it came to passing through the gates of the Magic Kingdom, she had always been the one left on the outside. Once I found out about this history, I made plans to take her to Disney World the next time a speaking engagement took our family to the southeastern United States. I thought I had mastered the Disney World drill. I knew from previous experiences that the prospect of seeing cast members in freakishly oversized mouse and duck costumes somehow turns children into squirming bundles of emotional instability. What I  didn’t  expect was that the prospect of visiting this dreamworld would produce a stream of downright devilish behavior in our newest daughter. In the month leading up to our trip to the Magic Kingdom, she stole food when a simple request would have gained her a snack. She lied when it would have been easier to tell the truth. She whispered insults that were carefully crafted to hurt her older sister as deeply as possible — and, as the days on the calendar moved closer to the trip, her mutinies multiplied. A couple of days before our family headed to Florida, I pulled our daughter into my lap to talk through her latest escapade. “I know what you’re going to do,” she stated flatly. “You’re not going to take me to Disney World, are you?” The thought hadn’t actually crossed my mind, but her downward spiral suddenly started to make some sense. She knew she couldn’t earn her way into the Magic Kingdom — she had tried and failed that test several times before — so she was living in a way that placed her as far as possible from the most magical place on earth. In retrospect, I’m embarrassed to admit that, in that moment, I was tempted to turn her fear to my own advantage. The easiest response would have been, “If you don’t start behaving better, you’re right, we won’t take you” — but, by God’s grace, I didn’t. Instead, I asked her, “Is this trip something we’re doing as a family?” She nodded, brown eyes wide and tear-rimmed. “Are you part of this family?” She nodded again. “Then you’re going with us. Sure, there may be some consequences to help you remember what’s right and what’s wrong — but you’re part of our family, and we’re not leaving you behind.” I’d like to say that her behaviors grew better after that moment. They didn’t. Her choices pretty much spiraled out of control at every hotel and rest stop all the way to Lake Buena Vista. Still, we headed to Disney World on the day we had promised, and it was a typical Disney day. Overpriced tickets, overpriced meals, and lots of lines, mingled with just enough manufactured magic to consider maybe going again someday. In our hotel room that evening, a very different child emerged. She was exhausted, pensive, and a little weepy at times, but her month-long facade of rebellion had faded. When bedtime rolled around, I prayed with her, held her, and asked, “So how was your first day at Disney World?” She closed her eyes and snuggled down into her stuffed unicorn. After a few moments, she opened her eyes ever so slightly. “Daddy,” she said, “I finally got to go to Disney World. But it wasn’t because I was good; it’s because I’m yours.” It wasn’t because I was good; it’s because I’m yours. That’s the message of outrageous grace. Outrageous grace isn’t a favor you can achieve by being good; it’s the gift you receive by being God’s. Outrageous grace is God’s goodness that comes looking for you when you have nothing but a middle finger flipped in the face of God to offer in return. It’s a farmer paying a full day’s wages to a crew of deadbeat day laborers with only a single hour punched on their time cards (Matthew 20:1 – 16). It’s a man marrying an abandoned woman and then refusing to forsake his covenant with her when she turns out to be a whore (Ezekiel 16:8 – 63; Hosea 1:1 — 3:5). It’s the insanity of a shepherd who puts ninety-nine sheep at risk to rescue the single lamb that’s too stupid to stay with the flock (Luke 15:1 – 7). It’s the love of a father who hands over his finest rings and robes to a young man who has squandered his inheritance on drunken binges with his fair-weather friends (Luke 15:11 – 32)…It’s one-way love that calls you into the kingdom not because you’ve been good but because God has chosen you and made you his own. And now he is chasing you to the ends of the earth to keep you as his child, and nothing in heaven or hell can ever stop him… But here’s what’s amazing about God’s outrageous grace: This isn’t merely what God the Father  would  do; it’s what he  did  do. God could have chosen to save anyone, everyone, or no one from Adam’s fallen race. But what God did was to choose a multi-hued multitude of “someones,” and — if you are a believer in Jesus Christ — one of those “someones” was you. God in Christ has declared over you, “I could have chosen anyone in the whole world as my child, and I chose you. No matter what you say or do, neither my love nor my choice will ever change.” That’s grace that’s truly amazing. (Pgs. 81-84)

You Need a Theology of Uncomfortable Grace

trip of grace

Broken-Down House

Life in this terribly broken world is hard. You are constantly dealing with the frustration of this world not operating the way God intended. You are always facing the unexpected. Almost daily you are required to deal with something you wouldn’t have chosen for your life, but it’s there because of the location where we live. Life right here, right now is like living in a disheveled house that has begun to fall down on its own foundation. It is still a house, but it doesn’t function as it was meant to. The doors constantly get stuck shut. The plumbing only occasionally works properly. You are never sure what’s going to happen when you plug an appliance in, and it seems that the roof leaks even when it’s not raining. So it is with the world that you and I live in. It really is a broken-down house.

Now, there are really only two responses we can have to the brokenness that complicates all of our lives: cursing or mourning . Let’s be honest. Cursing is the more natural response. We curse the fact that we have to deal with flawed people. We curse the fact that we have to deal with things that don’t work right. We curse the fact that we have to deal with pollution and disease. We curse the fact that promises get broken, relationships shatter, and dreams die. We curse the realities of pain and suffering. We curse the fact that this broken-down world has been assigned to be the address where we live. It all makes us irritated, impatient, bitter, angry, and discontent. Yes, it’s right not to like these things. It’s natural to find them frustrating, because as Paul says in Romans 8, the whole world groans as it waits for redemption. But cursing is the wrong response. We curse what we have to deal with because it makes our lives harder than we want them to be. Cursing is all about our comfort, our pleasure, our ease. Cursing is fundamentally self-centered.

New Morning Mercies

New Morning Mercies

Paul David Tripp

This devotional by best-selling author Paul David Tripp offers daily encouragement through 365 gospel-centered meditations aimed at helping readers trust God and rely on his grace each and every day.

Mourning is the much better response. Mourning embraces the tragedy of the fall. Mourning acknowledges that the world is not the way God meant it to be. Mourning cries out for God’s redeeming, restoring hand. Mourning acknowledges the suffering of others. Mourning is about something bigger than the fact that life is hard. Mourning grieves what sin has done to the cosmos and longs for the Redeemer to come and make his broken world new again. Mourning, then, is a response that is prompted by grace.

The Evidence of Grace

Yes, your life is messy and hard, but that’s not a failure of the plan; it is the plan. It’s God working to complete what he’s begun in you.

It is so very different from the way we normally think about grace. It’s not the way we tend to think about God’s love. It doesn’t seem wise and good to us. It causes us to question God’s faithfulness and love. It’s just not what we thought we signed on for when we placed our trust in Jesus Christ. It’s not a typical definition of the good life, and it causes us to think at times that God isn’t paying attention and that the bad guys are winning.

You are tempted to think that because you’re God’s child, your life should be easier, more predictable, and definitely more comfortable. But that’s not what the Bible teaches. Instead, it reveals that struggles are part of God’s plan for you. This means that if you’re God’s child, you must never allow yourself to think that the hard things you are now going through are failures of God’s character, promises, power, or plan. You must not allow yourself to think that God has turned his back on you. You must not let yourself begin to buy into the possibility that God is not as trustworthy as you thought him to be. You must not let yourself do any of these things, because when you begin to doubt God’s goodness, you quit going to him for help. You see, you don’t run for help to those characters you have come to doubt.

God has chosen to let you live in this fallen world because he plans to employ the difficulties of it to continue and complete his work in you. This means that those moments of difficulty are not an interruption of his plan or the failure of his plan, but rather an important part of his plan. I think there are times for many of us when we cry out for God’s grace and we get it—but not the grace that we’re looking for. We want the grace of relief or release. We get those in little pieces, but largely they are yet to come. What we all really need right now is the grace of transformation. God’s grace is not always pleasant. It often comes in the form of something we never would have chosen to go through if we were controlling the joystick.

God has chosen to let you live in this fallen world because he plans to employ the difficulties of it to continue and complete his work in you.

We all need to teach and encourage one another with the theology of uncomfortable grace, because on this side of eternity, God’s grace often comes to us in uncomfortable forms. It may not be what you and I want, but it is precisely what we need. God is faithful; he will use the brokenness of the world that is your present address to complete the loving work of personal transformation that he has begun.

This side of eternity in this broken world, cursing is the default language of the kingdom of self; but mourning is the default language of the kingdom of God. Which language will you speak today?

Video Game / Façade (2005)

Ten years ago, you introduced two friends of yours to each other: Grace and Trip. They got together and married. After years of not seeing either of them, Trip calls you over the telephone and asks you over to their apartment for a visit.

That's pretty much the whole story. In this video game developed by independent studio Procedural Arts, you play as yourself visiting friends. And the friends are not exactly happy with each other .

The main selling point of this video game (well, "selling point" is the wrong term, since it's freeware ) is Grace's and Trip's artificial intelligence. The player communicates with them through simple body language and by typing messages. Though they do occasionally get, er, confused if you say something they do not understand, they comprehend English remarkably well for video game characters.

Gameplay is extraordinarily simple: You move with the arrow keys, interact with objects (or physically with Grace or Trip) by left-clicking on them, and can talk at any time simply by typing something.

Façade provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking : When Trip or Grace are listing off things you did wrong that night, they'll include "suggesting they get a pet" if you did so.
  • Ass Shove : If you want to, you can set any object down on the couch and then sit on it.
  • As You Know : "So, ten years ago, that's when you introduced us, right?" Say "No" for a good laugh.
  • Backstory : Unfolds a little bit at a time.
  • Berserk Button : Trip will throw you out immediately if you say certain things, most of them sexually inappropriate and therefore understandable. Infamously, however, he also hates the word "melon." note  Of course they're slang for a woman's breasts, but the game is coded to not take context into account. If you say it at the very beginning: Trip: Hey, it's good to see you! Player: I brought melons! Trip: *Smacks the door in the player's face*
  • Blatant Lies : When throwing you out of the apartment, Trip may insist that he and Grace will be "fine." Considering that you overheard a heated argument, and they may have had at least one with you around to hear it, that claim isn't very believable or reassuring.
  • This is somewhat justified by the fact that Trip and Grace are extremely neurotic people, meaning it's not out of the question for them to have these irrational personal anxieties. Getting the game's Golden Ending involves helping them understand that they don't have to feel bad about any of these things.
  • Trip can't accept the idea of an artist wife, which is why he pushed her into advertising. Also, he grew up extremely poor, with his family always living "on the edge," and his parents were ignorant. He became ashamed enough, both of their ignorance and of an incident where they had to live in a shelter for six months, that it's what caused him to obsess over riches and material possessions, hence why he admires Grace's rich and smart but phony parents; now, however, he feels he can't get rid of his past and doesn't know who he is, he feels he's a phony. That's why while he plays high class poker games and is a wine snob, he also sneaks down to a crappy bar to drink beer with lowly construction workers. He manipulated Grace into marrying him in the first place because he proposed to her in front of her parents at a Christmas Eve party, so she couldn't say no without losing face. Finally, he slept with a client named Maria while he was on his trip to Barcelona.
  • Grace has a tendency to avoid responsibility for her decisions, so she let Trip control her into not going after her artistic passion. She developed that tendency because her parents bought her everything she wanted as a kid, so now even her apartment full of expensive crap is another way of hiding. Her parents are smart and rich, unlike Trip's, but they're always pretending to be something they're not, so Grace admires Trip's "real" upbringing that he was ashamed of. When Trip manipulated Grace into marrying him, Grace never did anything about it. Also, Grace has been secretly painting behind Trip's back, such as while he was away on his trip to Italy. Finally, back when Grace was in college, she was in love with someone else: an art major named Vince, and they had sex the night before Trip proposed to Grace. Grace feels guilty that having the affair at that time "jinxed" Grace and Trip's marriage.
  • Captain Obvious : Hug them and they may say "You're hugging me!"
  • When the fighting starts, they tend to shout "Goddamn it" in frustration a lot !
  • You can end the game before it even begins by just turning around and activating the elevator behind you.
  • You can get kicked out for, among other things, sitting still for too long, moving around too much, or saying the word "melon" or any word containing it. (Granted, "melon" is slang for "breast," but woe to unfortunate players who say it in an innocent context, such as wanting a melon-flavored cocktail.) But flat-out telling Trip and Grace to kill themselves (or each other) will just merit some uncomfortable banter.
  • It becomes even more ridiculous when you simply refuse to enter the room after Trip opens the door. He'll plead for you to come in a few times before dragging you forward up to the door, saying you need to go, and slamming the door in your face.
  • Trip and Grace seem to have a crippling phobia of melons.
  • Establishing Series Moment : As you're walking up to the door, you can overhear Trip and Grace having a heated argument, giving you a clue as to how troubled their marriage is. When Trip greets you, his responses to what you say give you some idea of how the dialogue system works, and how easy it can be to get a Game Over .
  • Game Mod : The games textures and sprites for pictures/painting/props/skylines are in common graphic formats, and easy to open and edit. Many YouTube videos demonstrate graphical hacks, such as the magic 8-ball being turned into Chris Hansen, the skyline from the window being set on fire, etc.
  • Gay Option : No matter what gender your character is, you can still flirt with either Grace or Trip. Or both.
  • Gender-Blender Name : It takes some strong dedication on the player's part to invoke this, since Trip and Grace will always treat the player character as the gender assumed by the name. That being said, it explicitly offers "Chris," "Kelly," "Mel," "Nat," "Pat" and "Sam" for males and females, plus there's "Joe" versus "Jo," so you can select any of these and just act like you meant the opposite version.
  • While it serves little to no purpose other than trying to outrun Trip when he's kicking you out, you can hold the CTRL key to run. The instructions do not state this.
  • Happy Marriage Charade : It's right there in the title. Trip and Grace are desperately trying to maintain the image that they're a happy couple living the dream, but right from the get-go it's clear the marriage is troubled. Over the course of the night, things escalate from the couple making inauthentic attempts to disguise their strained relationship, to taking passive-aggressive digs at each other and finally full-blown arguments.
  • Hates Their Parent : Both Trip and Grace resent their parents, which is just one part of their many, many issues. Trip resents that his parents are poor and uneducated, which resulted in him growing up in poverty and constantly feeling he was never good enough. Grace resents her parents for being image-obsessed snobs who spoiled her, thus leading her to avoid responsibility for her actions and let others make decisions for her. Ironically, they both like each other's parents; Trip likes that Grace's parents are sophisticated and successful, while Grace likes Trip's parents for being 'real' and not caring only about wealth.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here] : Done in an odd way. The player doesn't type in a name, but instead selects one from a list, which will then be awkwardly spliced into Trip and Grace's fully voice-acted dialogue.
  • Trip and Grace have no respect for the walls, or sometimes even furniture; they walk straight through them without a second thought when necessary.
  • The player can also do this due to a glitch, but only in one section of wall, and the player must be walking backwards.
  • Courtesy of Trip. If you're "out of line" about three times, Trip kicks you out of the apartment (and it's always Trip who physically removes you, even if Grace is the one you pissed off). "Out of line" in this case being defined as saying really rude things to them, kissing them on the mouth, or acting 'strangely.' note  Either by moving around too often, not moving at all for a while, or by staying silent. However, later when the couple start getting very heated, this is reduced to two then to a single offense for being kicked out of the apartment. Though on occasion you can get kicked out after one mistake instead of three if you say something really outrageous.
  • If you tick Trip off enough and then leave the apartment before he manages to throw you out, he'll actually come up to you and throw you in in order to throw you out.
  • Keywords Conversation : Talking with Grace and Trip is accomplished by typing in what you want to say, with a powerful text parser deciphering and producing an appropriate response from them.
  • Love Triangle : We would put in a spoiler box, but there are only three characters, so you can guess who is involved.
  • The Masochism Tango : Grace and Trip. You can overhear a huge argument between them before Trip even answers the door for you, so they end up trying to pretend everything is normal and happy for your benefit while secretly getting passive-aggressive potshots in at each other. Then the potshots turn just plain aggressive, which is when you can potentially help them.
  • Mad Libs Dialogue : The player's name is always said in a softer and flatter tone. It can sound really out of place, especially when the arguments get heated.
  • Manipulative Bastard : To a certain extent, Trip. It can be revealed he manipulated Grace into marrying him by deliberately proposing to her in front of her parents on Christmas Eve and it's also implied he manipulated her into giving up her dream of becoming an artist and going into advertising instead .
  • Match Maker Quest : The player is supposed to fill the role of informal marriage counselor.
  • Multiple Endings : You can either get kicked out by Trip, get Trip or Grace to leave, successfully save their marriage, leave with Trip and Grace telling you they're OK while they're not, or leave the apartment before any of the previous possibilities happen. There are multiple ways to get the same ending.
  • Mutual Envy : It's revealed that Trip and Grace are both envious of the other's upbringing and family. Trip grew up poor, including having to live in a homeless shelter at one point, and resents his working-class parents for being ignorant, uneducated and making bad financial decisions. He desires to have the life of abundance and sophistication that Grace had growing up, and admires her upper-class parents for being better educated, more cultured and financially successful. Grace did grow up in a financially stable household, but she has a strained relationship with her parents because they always made decisions for her and come off as stuffy and shallow, with Grace feeling a lot of pressure to live up to their expectations. She much prefers Trip's parents because they're more authentic and less materialistic, and feels he had a more loving upbringing even if he was poor.
  • The two people you hooked up are unhappy with their marriage.
  • In-game, if you side with only Grace or only Trip the whole time, that will technically solve their relationship problems...by causing either Grace or Trip to cut the relationship off and storm out of the apartment.
  • Non-Standard Game Over : If you irritate Trip at the very beginning of the game and fail to sneak past him into the apartment , he shuts the door on you without giving you a chance to come in.
  • Precision F-Strike : Trip and Grace rarely curse ( major curses, anyway - both seem addicted to the phrase "Goddamn it"), but in the heat of an argument Grace might say "fuck you" to Trip and it's almost a shock when she does.
  • Press Start to Game Over : It's possible to have Trip kick you out of the house before you actually enter if you say something obscene, offensive, or otherwise triggering as soon as he opens the door to let you in.
  • Railroading : The game has an obvious script it's trying to follow, and though it has a few variations on how it follows it, ultimately any attempts at going Off the Rails will lead to Trip and Grace either awkwardly acknowledging it before continuing on or just throwing you out. Brutalmoose in particular noticed how the game starts out trying to steer the player towards three topics of conversation: Trip's Italy photo, Grace's decorating and drinks. He even explicitly said to Trip repeatedly that he doesn't want to talk about the Italy photo, and Trip would not stop pressing the topic.
  • Sincerity Mode : When Trip and Grace are arguing, if you say something that pushes the story towards getting a good ending, one of them will say something along the lines of "That should help us," and they always mean it. Even though they sound sarcastic when they do.
  • Done unintentionally. When the two end up bringing in their confessions, they are always treated as if they're the same level of seriousness, even when the two you get are completely out of line with each other (though the end result will be a bit more reflective). For instance, Trip might confess he's been having an affair and Grace may talk about how she admires Trip's parents, all the while Trip will act like this a perfectly reasonable counter-point.
  • You, the player, can also have skewed priorities. The two have their marriage falling apart in front of them and you can completely ignore it if you choose to and instead talk about how much their apartment sucks for lacking a tv.
  • Sprite/Polygon Mix : Various things around the apartment are obviously sprites.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial : Asking Trip if he cheated on Grace leads him to tell you to not accuse him of anything with Maria. And yes, he was cheating with Maria.
  • Every time you play, either Trip or Grace go through a list of everything you did wrong. Even if you were legitimately trying to help, they list reasons such as, "praising Grace." If you do nothing but sit on the couch and say "Yes" when Trip or Grace ask you if you want the truth, they start talking like, "Do you really think that..." and then, since they have nothing to list, say, "...I mean is that supposed to help us realize something about ourselves?" without saying anything in between.
  • Trip and Grace also give each other these speeches throughout the game.
  • Trapped with the Therapy Session : An example as you play as the unfortunate third wheel invited to have dinner with a couple whose relationship is clearly and painfully crumbling. Depending on how you act, the night can end all manner of ways, good or bad...but you're never fully in control of the situation (thanks to randomly-generated events). You're a pawn in their passive-aggressive game, and they never let you forget it.
  • The Unfair Sex : Averted. The player will eventually discover that Trip and Grace are both roughly equally at fault for their failed marriage, and the game's narrative and presentation generally don't take sides as to who is more sympathetic.
  • Video Game Caring Potential : Only if you actually manage to save Grace and Trip's marriage. Typically this can only happen if you get them both to admit at least one fault of some kind.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential : Feel free to completely ruin Grace's and Trip’s lives. Though their marriage is already falling apart and they both intensely hate their life together. The worst you can do is be a catalyst to make it all come apart more quickly.
  • Video Game Cruelty Punishment : If you piss them off enough, Trip will shove you out of the apartment.
  • We Used to Be Friends : A rather subtle case. Trip, Grace, and you, in the back story, have been good friends and you're even the guy who hooked the two up. Trip having to throw you out due to being a complete troll can be seen as this.
  • If the player makes enough moves on Grace while Trip isn't present, she'll confess with this line:
  • Wide-Open Sandbox : Well, OK, so it’s a small, closed sandbox. Yet a sandbox it is.
  • You Lose at Zero Trust : When Trip gets upset enough at you, he kicks you out of the apartment, causing a game-over.

We'll be fine, just... GO.

Every meal feels like a gift from the heavens, elevating your road trip to a celestial experience. These moments of culinary grace leave an indelible mark on your palate and your soul.

One of the greatest joys of food travel is immersing yourself in the regional flavors that each destination has to offer. From the smoky barbecues of the South to the hearty stews of the Midwest, each region has its own distinct culinary identity. It’s not just about the food itself, but also the stories, traditions, and cultural significance that are intertwined with every dish.

As you embark on this journey, you quickly realize that food has a remarkable ability to bring people together. Whether you’re sitting at a communal table in a bustling city or sharing a picnic with locals in a small town, the bond forged over a shared meal is something truly special. These newfound friends become your guides, introducing you to their favorite eateries, recommending dishes that are not to be missed, and shedding light on the unique food traditions of their region.

Every day brings forth new culinary adventures on the open road. From savoring the perfectly flaky crust of a homemade pie at a roadside bakery to indulging in a plate of freshly caught seafood at a coastal shack, each bite becomes a part of your story. As you reflect on the miles traveled and the meals shared, you realize that this road trip has been more than just a gastronomic adventure. It has been a journey filled with culinary grace, where every bite has been a moment of divine intervention. The memories created, the flavors experienced, and the connections forged will forever remain etched in your mind and heart.

So pack your bags, hit the road, and let the spirit of food travel guide you. Get ready to experience a moment of road-trip culinary grace from a merciful god.

Traveling through the heartland

As you embark on your road trip through the heartland of the country, you are greeted by vast stretches of open plains, rolling hills, and scenic landscapes that seem to go on forever. The charm of the heartland lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the warmth and hospitality of its people.

You find yourself driving through small towns that are filled with nostalgia and a sense of community. The main streets are lined with quaint shops, local markets, and charming diners that have been serving up comfort food for generations. It’s here that you begin to truly understand the essence of heartland cuisine.

Heartland cuisine is all about simple, hearty dishes that are made with love and cherished ingredients. From the fluffy biscuits and rich gravy of a classic Southern breakfast to the juicy burgers and crispy fries that are synonymous with American roadside diners, every bite tells a story.

As you make your way from state to state, you start to notice subtle variations in the local cuisine. In the Midwest, you indulge in buttery cornbread, creamy casseroles, and melt-in-your-mouth barbecue. Each bite is a testament to the region’s agricultural abundance and its love affair with comfort food.

In the southern states, the flavors become bolder and spicier. You savor the tangy, smoky notes of slow-cooked barbecue, the savory goodness of shrimp and grits, and the irresistible sweetness of pecan pie. It’s a culinary journey that takes you deep into the soul of the South, where food is a way of life.

The heartland is also home to a vibrant food culture influenced by immigrant communities. In cities like Chicago and St. Louis, you can discover a melting pot of flavors, from deep-dish pizzas to mouthwatering hot dogs loaded with toppings. It’s a testament to the diversity and spirit of the heartland, where culinary traditions from around the world find their place.

But it’s not just about the iconic dishes and regional specialties. The heartland is also a haven for farm-to-table dining. In the small towns and rural areas, you stumble upon charming farm stands and farmers’ markets that offer fresh, seasonal produce, artisanal cheeses, and homemade preserves. It’s an opportunity to savor the flavors of the land and support local farmers.

As you travel through the heartland, you realize that the true beauty of this culinary journey lies in the unexpected encounters and the stories that unfold along the way. Whether it’s sharing a meal with a friendly local at a roadside diner or stumbling upon a hidden gem tucked away in a small town, the heartland has a way of surprising you with its culinary delights.

So roll down the windows, let the scent of freshly baked pie waft through the air, and immerse yourself in the culinary wonders of the heartland. This is a road trip that will fill your stomach and warm your soul.

Discovering hidden gems

One of the most exciting aspects of a road trip filled with food travel is the opportunity to discover hidden culinary gems tucked away in unexpected corners of the heartland. These hidden gems often eschew the limelight of mainstream tourism, but they hold the key to truly authentic and unforgettable dining experiences.

As you venture off the beaten path, you start to rely on local recommendations, word-of-mouth suggestions, and your own instinct for sniffing out culinary treasures. It’s not about the flashy restaurants or the tourist traps, but rather about the hole-in-the-wall eateries, family-owned diners, and unassuming roadside stands that hold the secrets to heartland cuisine.

You might stumble upon a tiny shack serving up the most mouthwatering fried chicken you’ve ever tasted in your life. The crispy, golden skin yields to tender, juicy meat that is seasoned to perfection. The secret recipe has been carefully guarded for generations, passed down from one generation to another, preserving the essence of heartland cooking.

Or perhaps you find yourself in a bustling farmers’ market, where the air is thick with the aroma of freshly baked bread and ripe produce. Here, you discover local artisans crafting handcrafted cheeses, artisanal sausages, and unique preserves that showcase the vibrant flavors of the heartland.

Another hidden gem you might stumble upon is a family-run bakery nestled in a quiet town. The scent of freshly baked pies and pastries draws you in, and you can’t help but succumb to the temptation of indulging in a slice of homemade apple pie or a flaky cinnamon roll oozing with icing. These baked goods are made with love and attention to detail, a testament to the passion and dedication of the bakers.

Part of the joy of discovering hidden culinary gems is the element of surprise. You never know what’s waiting for you around the corner. It could be a roadside BBQ stand where the pitmaster’s slow-smoked ribs fall off the bone and melt in your mouth. Or it could be a tiny fish shack by the coast where you feast on the freshest seafood caught just hours before.

But it’s not just about the food itself; it’s also about the stories and the people behind these hidden gems. Often, the owners and chefs have a deep connection to the heartland, and their passion for their craft shines through in every dish they serve. It’s a chance to hear their stories, learn about their culinary traditions, and gain a deeper appreciation for the flavors of the region.

So as you traverse the heartland on your food-filled road trip, don’t be afraid to venture off the beaten path and seek out the hidden gems that lie in wait. These culinary treasures are a testament to the rich and diverse tapestry of flavors that make the heartland a true food lover’s paradise.

A taste of divine intervention

As you navigate your road trip through the heartland, something magical happens – it’s as if a higher culinary power is guiding your path, orchestrating a series of divine culinary interventions. Each meal you encounter feels like a gift from the heavens, leaving you in awe of the flavors and experiences that unfold.

One such moment of culinary grace might come when you stumble upon a tiny farm-to-table restaurant in the middle of nowhere. The menu showcases seasonal ingredients sourced from local farmers, and every dish is prepared with meticulous attention to detail. As you take your first bite, the flavors dance on your palate, harmonizing in a way that feels truly heavenly.

Another instance of divine intervention might occur when you find yourself at a roadside barbeque joint. The aroma of slow-cooked meats fills the air, and the pitmaster welcomes you with a warm smile. The tender, flavorful brisket, with its caramelized smoky crust, almost brings tears of joy to your eyes. It’s an experience that feels like a gift from the culinary gods themselves.

And then there are the serendipitous encounters with talented chefs who are passionate about their craft. Perhaps you visit a small town and end up dining at a restaurant helmed by a chef who has trained under the best in the culinary world. Their innovative dishes, expert techniques, and creative flavor combinations leave you in awe, as if you’ve been touched by culinary divinity.

Divine intervention can also manifest itself in unexpected encounters with local food traditions. You might stumble upon a regional specialty that you’ve never heard of before, like a unique indigenous dish or a time-honored recipe passed down through generations. The flavors and techniques used in these dishes seem to transcend the ordinary, transporting you to a realm of flavors previously unexplored.

These moments of culinary grace are not just about the food itself, but also the atmosphere and the energy surrounding the meal. Picture yourself sitting at a picturesque lakeside restaurant, the soft breeze rustling the leaves around you as you savor a perfectly cooked fish caught from the waters just a few meters away. The experience is nothing short of divine, as if the universe has conspired to create the perfect balance of flavors and ambiance.

These experiences humble you and make you realize the power that food has to bring joy, to connect people, and to elevate ordinary moments into something extraordinary. It’s in these moments that you understand the true essence of food travel – it’s not just about satiating hunger, but also about nourishing the soul and creating memories that last a lifetime.

So as you continue on your road trip filled with culinary adventures, be open to the possibility of divine intervention. Embrace the unexpected, and allow yourself to be swept away by the flavors that seem to have been bestowed upon you by a higher culinary force. It’s a taste of gastronomic enlightenment that will forever be etched in your memory.

Embracing regional flavors

One of the true joys of food travel is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the distinctive regional flavors that define each destination along your road trip through the heartland. From the spices and seasonings to the cooking techniques and traditional dishes, every region has its own unique culinary identity waiting to be savored and celebrated.

As you travel through the heartland, you’ll quickly discover that each state, each city, and even each small town has its own culinary heritage and signature flavors. In the South, you’ll find a love for bold, soulful flavors and comfort foods like fried chicken, shrimp and grits, and tangy barbecued ribs. It’s a region renowned for its rich culinary traditions that reflect its history and cultural diversity.

In the Midwest, you’ll encounter hearty dishes that embody the region’s agricultural heritage. Think of savory meat-filled pastries, hearty stews, and farm-to-table dining experiences that highlight the abundant produce of the region. The flavors here are earthy and satisfying, a reflection of the hardworking spirit of the Midwest.

Heading further west, you’ll discover the Southwest with its vibrant blend of Mexican and Native American influences. Spices like chili, cumin, and cilantro take center stage, bringing a fiery heat and robust flavors to dishes like enchiladas, tamales, and green chili stew. The colors, aromas, and flavors of the Southwest will transport you to a culinary world all its own.

As you journey north, the Great Lakes region offers its own distinct flavors. The freshwater bounty of the lakes provides an abundance of delicious fish and freshwater seafood, while the fertile land sustains an array of agricultural delights. Here, you’ll find dishes like creamy New England clam chowder, hearty Midwestern hot dish casseroles, and the beloved cheese curds of Wisconsin.

Even within a single state, you can find regional variations that reflect the local culture and traditions. For example, in Texas, you’ll encounter the smoky, slow-cooked brisket of Central Texas, the spicy chili and Tex-Mex flavors of the border regions, and the Gulf Coast’s seafood delicacies.

Embracing regional flavors means being open to trying local specialties and exploring the culinary traditions of each destination. It means stepping outside of your comfort zone and indulging in dishes that might be unfamiliar, yet tantalizing. Whether it’s biting into a sweet and tangy slice of Key lime pie in Florida or savoring a plate of fresh-caught Alaskan salmon, each bite brings you closer to the heart of the region you’re in.

But regional flavors aren’t just limited to the dishes themselves. They also extend to the beverages that accompany them. From sipping on a mint julep in the South to enjoying a glass of locally brewed craft beer in the Midwest, the drink options truly enhance the culinary experience and provide a taste of the regional beverage culture.

So as you embark on your road trip through the heartland, embrace the regional flavors that await you. Let your taste buds guide you through the diverse culinary landscape, and relish in the unique flavors that define each destination. It’s a journey that will not only fill your stomach but also leave you with a deep appreciation for the rich tapestry of regional cuisines that make the heartland an incredible food lover’s paradise.

Unforgettable meals with newfound friends

One of the most beautiful aspects of food travel is the opportunity to create lasting connections with people from different walks of life. As you embark on your road trip through the heartland, you’ll encounter locals who are eager to share their culinary traditions and invite you to partake in unforgettable meals that forge lifelong friendships.

It’s a truly magical experience when a shared love for food brings people together. Whether you’re dining at a communal table in a bustling city or joining a family for a home-cooked meal in a small town, the warmth and hospitality of the heartland shine through in every bite.

Imagine sitting down for a meal at a lively Southern barbecue joint, surrounded by laughter, the sound of clinking glasses, and the intoxicating aroma of slow-cooked meats. As you strike up conversations with those around you, you discover that food is a universal language. The locals eagerly share their favorite dishes, secret family recipes, and stories of culinary traditions passed down from one generation to the next.

In the heartland, strangers quickly become friends over a shared appreciation for good food. A chance encounter at a farmers’ market might lead to an invitation to a backyard cookout, where you join a group of newfound friends in grilling up steaks and indulging in homemade pies. The laughter, the camaraderie, and the joy of breaking bread together create memories that last a lifetime.

These shared meals with newfound friends also offer an opportunity to learn about the region’s culture and history. As you sample dishes that have been treasured for generations, you gain a deeper understanding of the traditions, ingredients, and techniques that have shaped the heartland’s culinary landscape. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in the stories and customs that make each bite even more meaningful.

The beauty of these meals lies not only in the food itself but also in the diverse perspectives and backgrounds of your dining companions. You may find yourself sharing a table with a farmer, a chef, an artist, or a local historian – each bringing their unique insights and experiences to the conversation. The conversations flow freely, connecting you to the heart and soul of the heartland.

In these moments, you realize the power of food as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding, and creating bonds that transcend mere acquaintanceship. The shared experience of a delicious meal becomes a catalyst for shared memories and lifelong connections.

It’s important to remain open-minded and receptive during these culinary encounters. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and try new flavors and dishes. Embrace the opportunity to learn about unfamiliar ingredients, cooking techniques, and dining customs. This spirit of openness allows you to fully immerse yourself in the culinary wonders of the heartland and forge deeper connections with the people who call it home.

So as you embark on your food-filled journey through the heartland, embrace the chance to share unforgettable meals with newfound friends. Let the pleasure of discovering new flavors and experiences be matched by the joy of forming lasting connections that will enrich your life long after the road trip comes to an end.

Culinary adventures on the open road

There’s something exhilarating about embarking on a road trip and letting the open road guide your culinary adventures. As you traverse the heartland, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of flavors, where each destination brings a new culinary delight to discover.

One of the joys of road tripping is the freedom to explore hidden gems and roadside eateries that you might not come across otherwise. From quaint diners tucked away in small towns to food trucks lining the highways, the open road offers an abundance of culinary treasures waiting to be uncovered.

As you drive, your senses are heightened by the scents of sizzling street food, smoky barbecue, and freshly baked goods. You follow the aroma, letting your nose lead the way to mouthwatering delights that become the highlight of your journey.

Each stop along your road trip presents a new opportunity to indulge in regional specialties and local delicacies. In Louisiana, you can’t resist the pull of a piping hot bowl of gumbo or a po’ boy sandwich stuffed with seafood. In Kansas City, you surrender to the temptation of smoky, tender ribs slathered in tangy sauce. And in Vermont, you savor every bite of a maple-infused breakfast spread.

But it’s not just about the specific dishes; it’s about the experience that comes with them. Picture yourself sitting at a picnic table with a view of the ocean, feasting on a lobster roll in Maine. Or imagine gathering around a bonfire in Texas, sharing stories and devouring s’mores made with homemade marshmallows.

Food becomes a catalyst for exploration, as you seek out local markets and farm stands, perusing the vibrant displays of produce and handmade goodies. You discover the satisfaction of biting into a crisp apple picked straight from the orchard or relishing the sweetness of a farm-fresh strawberry.

The open road also offers opportunities for culinary creativity. Armed with a cooler and a sense of culinary adventure, you can create your own meals on the go. Whether it’s a picnic in a scenic meadow or a gourmet spread prepared from ingredients sourced along the way, the open road allows you to unleash your inner chef and create memorable dining experiences amidst the beauty of the heartland.

And let’s not forget about the beverages. The open road provides a chance to explore local wineries, breweries, and distilleries, sampling the flavors of the land. You might find yourself sipping on a crisp chardonnay in California wine country or trying a small-batch craft beer in a microbrewery tucked away in a small town.

Culinary adventures on the open road are an invitation to connect with the heartland on a deeper level. It’s about indulging in flavors that tell the stories of the regions they come from, while also embracing the thrill of the unknown and the joy of being immersed in the present moment.

So buckle up, roll down the windows, and let the open road guide your taste buds. Every mile brings new culinary delights, unexpected encounters, and memories that will last a lifetime. Your road trip through the heartland promises to be a thrilling culinary adventure like no other.

Your Christian School: A Culture of Grace?

Your Christian School: A Culture of Grace? (Digital Video Streaming License)

Is your Christian school something more than a system of rules? Are you asking the law to do what only grace can accomplish? Rules restrain sin and rules expose sin, but rules will never deliver a child from sin. A biblical perspective tells us that what is wrong with children is something more profound than lack of information and skill.

Christian education is war, but not a war between teacher and student. All these struggles are the fruit of a deeper struggle - the war for the heart. God loves these children and wants to rule their heart, so He placed them in an environment where they can be shown the love of their Redeemer. Teachers, administrators, and staff are the tools for this love.

Your Christian School: A Culture of Grace? helps you win the deeper war for the hearts of your students. It’s only when your school is a functional culture of grace that real, lasting character change takes place and your classrooms become peaceful places of learning.

Trip

Travis , nicknamed Trip , is one of three main characters in Façade , and the husband of Grace . He is the one who invited the player to spend the evening with them at their apartment . He is 30 years old.

  • 1 Appearance
  • 3 Personality

Trip is a 30 year old man. He has blond hair and green eyes. He is seen wearing a green top with grey trousers pulled up past his belly button.

Travis was born 30 years prior to the game's setting, in a relatively poor family. He mentions that at one point he had to spend six months in a shelter, which was a relatively traumatic experience for him. This is the main cause of his obsession for material possessions.

He went to college along with Grace and the player, proposing to the former in his senior year, and developing a lasting friendship with the latter. He had a job as a bartender at that time, which is likely where he got his affinity for making drinks. He tried to keep his job a secret from Grace, but she found out about it when she and her friends went slumming off campus and saw him there.

In the events of the game, he is in an unhappy relationship with his wife, Grace. The two can be heard arguing before the player enters the apartment, and they begin arguing again after an evening with the player goes wrong. The player can either rekindle their love, be asked to leave after questioning their relationship, side with him or Grace and cause the other to leave, or get ejected out of the apartment by Trip.

Personality

Trip is friendly towards the player during the beginning of the game, and is relatively tolerant to the player's actions; for example, if the player says obscenities, he may attempt to laugh it off by saying "you're never afraid to push our buttons" or "you are not afraid to test my patience". Despite this, he is somewhat irritable, and can force the player to leave if provoked enough.

It is implied by Grace that he is a very controlling and even manipulative person as she states that he manipulated her into marrying him.

If the player says a trigger word before entering the apartment, Trip will shut the door on them. If the player manages to get into the apartment before the door is fully closed, the ending will not happen.

While in the apartment, using all of your strikes will cause Trip to kick you out. This ending can be achieved in many ways, such as insulting Trip or Grace, constantly bringing up Maria, using profanity, etc. Behaving erratically (i.e. running around the apartment) and actively avoiding his or Grace's questions will also cause him to eject you.

If Trip and Grace begin fighting, and the player says no to Trip's questions, Trip will leave the apartment.

In certain cases, Trip and Grace will instead say that nothing has changed, and will ask the player to leave. The player can be ejected by Trip if they take too long. After the player exits the apartment, the couple can be heard arguing as the screen fades, provided that they were not ejected.

  • Trip is stated to be 30 years old, meaning that he was 20 when he married Grace.
  • Grace can release info about Trip going to "crappy sports bars," angering him.
  • Trip could be considered the main antagonist due to his ability to eject the player from the apartment, effectively ending the game.
  • Trip will sometimes ironically [ clarification needed ] remark that he is a big fan of European culture.

"The next stop was Bennett's paradise. I wish I could describe how much Bennett likes the beach but you just have to see it to believe it. No other thing in life, not even Disney, can hold her attention and keep her happy all day long like ocean waves, sand, and sunshine. Her imagination runs wild as she sits in the sand and makes seashell shops, gardens, potions, and zoos. She rides the waves on her boogie board and chases the seagulls away as she runs. She is happy, relaxed, and most of all... calm. Time seemed endless to her there and to me as well, even if for just a few days... Want to appreciate the ocean? Go there with your daughter who is seeing it for the last time..."

15 Amazing Things To Do Along the Havre de Grace Promenade (2023)

trip of grace

Susan Ferrier

I like travel, dirt…and coffee! (Not necessarily in that order) I’m an avid gardener, and coffee fanatic. When possible, I travel with my bike which allows me to cover more ground while rooting out unique ecosystems and exquisite gardens, as well as, hidden gem coffee shops and roasteries.

Spectacular views of the Chesapeake Bay are just one reason to visit the Havre de Grace Promenade. Any time of day along this waterfront boardwalk you will find mothers pushing little ones in strollers, children gleefully frolicking at the water’s edge, and anglers casting their lines from a fishing pier. These are just a few of the things you can expect to see and do along this beautiful waterfront promenade.

**Disclaimer: This was a hosted stay, however, all opinions are my own. I strive to provide my readers with my most authentic sentiments.

havre de grace promenade

This one-mile boardwalk promenade built on the banks of the Susquehanna River and meandering through an oasis of tidal marsh is a little slice of heaven. Not only is the walkway a good place for a pleasant walk the marshlands provide a natural habitat for waterfowl and other flora and fauna.

In addition to nature and outdoor activities, this bustling waterfront features natural gardens, art, monuments,  museums, and historic sites including the  Concord Point Lighthouse and the Keeper’s residence.

About Havre de Grace, MD

Havre de Grace is a quaint historic town situated where the mouth of the Susquehanna River meets the majestic Upper Chesapeake Bay. Located in Harford County, it is easily accessible from I-95 and is under an hour’s drive from Baltimore and less than two hours from both Philadelphia and Washington DC. Its convenient location makes it perfect for a day trip or a weekend escape.

vandiver inn havre de grace

This bayside city was originally known by the name, Harmer’s Town until during the Revolutionary War when the visiting Marquis de Lafayette, a French General, commented it reminded him of the port city of Le Havre in France. When the city was incorporated in 1785 it was renamed.

The city’s name translates to “Harbor of Grace” and is pronounced Haver-dee-grace.

In 1789, George Washington overnighted in Havre de Grace on his way to New York for his first inauguration.

discover havre de grace

That same year, during the First Continental Congress, members considered potential locations for the new nation’s capital. Havre de Grace was proposed but lost to Washington, DC by just one vote.

Nevertheless, the city remained influential and played a significant role in the early history of this fledgling country. First during the War of 1812 and then as a stop on the Underground Railroad, as well as in more recent years as an industrial hub.

In 1987, the historic district of downtown Havre de Grace was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This charming town is only about a mile and a half from end to end making it very walkable. You will find antique shops, art galleries, independently owned coffee shops, and of course a fantastic food scene.

Perhaps before heading to the Promenade, especially if you plan to visit in the morning hours, you stop by one of the local coffee houses. You will find two conveniently located on Washington St in the main shopping district. Try either Concord Point Coffee or Java By the Bay2 . Both are small independently owned shops serving specialty brews.

If you are looking for a meal to go with that cup o’ Joe, try Vintage Cafe . They offer a full breakfast and lunch menu and claim to have the “best breakfast and coffee around.”

Things to see and do on the Havre de Grace Boardwalk

Situated on the south end of Havre de Grace at the end of Lafayette Street, the Promenade is part of an effort started in the 1980s to redevelop the waterfront. Today this end of town is fully developed and anchored by the Concord Point Lighthouse and the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum.

havre de grace boardwalk

If you start at the north end and work your way south you can enjoy all the outdoor stops at a leisurely pace leaving the museums to the end. Finally, finish your time along the Havre de Grace Promenade with lunch or ice cream in Tydings Memorial Park.

Of course, this is only a suggested route. There is no one way to enjoy the waterfront. But here are the things you won’t want to miss along the way.

Visit the Havre De Grace Maritime Museum and Environmental Center

The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum is a small local museum dedicated to nautical history on the Chesapeake Bay. It includes historical exhibits pertaining to life in the region for the early settler as well as the Susquehannock Indians before them.

Other exhibits include the legacies of commercial fishing, shipbuilding, and racing on the Chesapeake. Visitors will find displays showcasing the importance of the Conowingo Dam, the Coast Guard, and recreation on the bay.

havre de grace maritime museum

In early 2021, the museum unveiled the addition of a 600-square-foot exhibition centered around the Underground Railroad, titled, “Other Voices of Freedom.” This feature will remain a permanent exhibit of the museum. It stresses the role of the waterways and railways in the journey to freedom for slaves.

Located at the Maritime Museum is the Havre de Grace Environmental Center. The purpose of the center is to educate residents and visitors to the Lower Susquehanna River and Upper Chesapeake Bay about environmental issues affecting the region. The goal is to inspire through exhibits, educational experience, and support of scientific research.  This is achieved with outdoor, onsite, and online experiences.

Discover the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum

As the earliest feature of the waterfront redevelopment, the Havre De Grace Decoy Museum remains an anchor for the surrounding waterfront revitalization.

Because of the city’s long history of waterfowling and the art of decoy carving, Havre de Grace has been called the “decoy capital of the world.” This museum is dedicated to that tradition.

This museum holds one of the finest collections of decoys anywhere. Visitors will find everything from crudely chopped utilitarian pieces made strictly for luring ducks to decorative Chesapeake Bay decoys that are truly works of art.

Attend a Festival

As you can imagine Concord Point Park, Tydings Park, and the Promenade make a wonderful venue for festivals and events. And since Havre de Grace has a thriving arts community, the city has put the area to good use by using it for music festivals, art fairs, and annual events such as the Waterfront Festival.

Visit the pollinator garden

You will find an area set aside by the Environmental Center for flora that attracts butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinating fauna.

Identify flora and fauna along the waterfront

The Upper Chesapeake Bay is home to a wide array of waterfowl. Bald eagles, ospreys, herons, geese, and of course, ducks can all be seen from the boardwalk. Use the interpretive signage along the walkway to help with the identification of some of the lesser-known waterbirds. Markers will also inform you about the other animals that call the waterfront “home.”

Note the signage on some of the vegetation identifying the various plant and tree species indigenous to the area.

Learn about Havre de Grace and the Chesapeake Bay History

As you make your way along the bay’s edge, watch for the informational plaques detailing the maritime history of Havre de Grace and the role the Upper Chesapeake Bay played in history. This can be a primer for your visit to the Maritime Museum or if you don’t have time to visit the exhibits, you will still get a bit of a background about this historic city.

Climb the Concord Point Lighthouse and visit the Keeper’s House

This small lighthouse constructed in 1829 of locally mined granite, is the second oldest lighthouse in Maryland. The stone structure standing at only 26 feet tall is topped with a Fifth Order Fresnel Lens bringing it to a height of 36 feet overall. Climbing this restored lighthouse shouldn’t be a problem as there are only 27 steps to the top.

But despite its compact size, the Concord Point Lighthouse stood as a guiding light for mariners for 148 years before being decommissioned in 1975.

Concord Point Lighthouse and park

Historians and non-historians alike will enjoy learning about the colorful history of the Keepers House. It was, of course where the lighthouse keepers once resided. But in more recent years it operated as a restaurant, boarding house, and a bar.

Also, legend has it that Captain John O’Neill the light’s first keeper is buried on the premises. But like so many folk tales, this is simply an urban legend.

In 1995 President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore marked the 25th Anniversary of Earth Day at the Concord Point Lighthouse. Also in attendance that day was Senator Gaylor Nelson, Earth Day’s founder. Today there is a plaque marking the event.

Reel in a fish

Try some fishing from either the Alliance Street fishing pier on the north end of the boardwalk or at Tydings Memorial Park. License-free fishing is permitted in the park within the designated areas. However, fishing from the pier will require an MD Fishing License . Small- and largemouth bass, striped bass, and black sea bass are a few of the fish that can be caught from the shores.

Enjoy the amazing views

The boardwalk is the perfect spot to grab a seat on one of the many benches along the waterfront to take in unparalleled views of the Susquehanna Flats and bay breezes.

Ponder some public art

At the north end of the Promenade, you will find “Big Fish, School of Fish,” a large stainless-steel sculpture by Carroll County artist Tom Sterner. The 600-pound sculpture is made up of 557 small fish assembled to depict a huge rockfish. It was commissioned by the City of Havre de Grace and the community’s Public Art Committee in 2019.

Pay your Respects at the Gold Star Families Memorial

The monument recognizes the families of service members who gave their life defending the United States. Families are so often the forgotten sufferers. The memorial and its symbolism are a beautiful tribute to those who served and those left behind.

Watch the sailboat races

If you happen to be visiting on a Thursday, head out to the boardwalk to watch the sailboat races. The Havre De Grace Yacht Club hosts the weekly events on the upper Chesapeake. These sailing regattas take place from mid-April through early September. The races start at 5:30 PM. You can find the full schedule on the yacht club’s website .

Admire the Bayou House

Perched high above the wooden platform, overlooking the Susquehanna Flats you will see an old historic hotel. Built in 1917, the Bayou Hotel, constructed of Harford County fieldstone, features 18-inch walls and 14-inch wood beams. During Prohibition, it welcomed visitors from Washington DC, New York City and beyond. And, while today it is condominiums you can’t help but imagine what it may have been in its heyday.

Grab a meal or an ice cream at the Promenade Grille

At the south end of the boardwalk, near the city yacht basin, you will find the Promenade Grille. This is a grab-and-go kind of place with picnic table seating under a covered deck area. The menu includes burgers, fries, full platters, and even Hershey’s Ice Cream.

Picnic in Tydings Memorial Park

Bring a picnic lunch from home or grab something from a local restaurant and head up into the park for a picnic lunch. Find yourself a shade tree to sit under. The picturesque square features gardens, walking paths, and a playground for the kids.

Things to know before you go

  • Bikes and skateboards are not permitted on the Promenade.
  • Sorry, only service animals are allowed. If you are looking for dog-friendly places on the Upper Chesapeake Bay,  Cecil County offers many places that welcome Fido .
  • Public restrooms are located behind the Keeper House.
  • There is NOT a city parking lot but there is ample street parking.
  • Bed and Breakfasts are a hallmark of this town. I recommend the Vandiver Inn . It’s clean, quiet and the rooms are beautifully appointed.

Insider Tips

If you are thinking you might like to get out on the water, Baysail Sailing School and Charter offer single-day introductory courses. You will learn the basics of sailing, including tacking, jibing, points of sail, parts of the boat, rigging, and more from a professional instructor. One-day courses cost $225 pp and require two participants. The school is located at the Tidewater Marina.

Donna Kelce Says ‘Gracious’ Sons Travis and Jason Help Fuel Her Love for Travel: They ‘Allow Me to Do That’ (Exclusive)

The NFL stars’ mom told PEOPLE that “going off to really fun spots in the world” is one of her passions

Donna Kelce is expressing her gratitude for her sons and how they help fuel one of her biggest passions — travel!

While speaking with PEOPLE at QVC's Age of Possibility summit in Las Vegas on April 24, the NFL stars’ mom opened up about how her famous sons — Jason , 36, and Travis , 34 — encourage her love of globetrotting.

“I love to travel, and my kids are very, very gracious and allow me to do that,” Donna tells PEOPLE.

On the topic of Mother’s Day, she adds that her sons “usually give me gifts, but going off to really fun spots in the world is what I would rather have more than anything else.”

Also during the summit, Donna shared that her son recently enjoyed a beach getaway with his superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift . She said Travis sent her a photo from the pair’s relaxing day at Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif., a picturesque vacation town, and added that they were joined by another famous couple — Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid .

Donna said that her son realized his pal Cooper would be at the same QVC event as her, so when she saw the Maestro actor in Vegas, Donna greeted him warmly, saying, “Travis told me you were going to be here."

Cooper was at the site with his food truck Danny and Coops Philly Cheesesteak to serve lunch to the Quintessential 50 (Q50) — the event’s honorees. QVC describes the group of 50 as, "authentic and inspiring female celebrities, activists, business leaders and lifestyle experts who exemplify the possibilities of life over 50.”

Some of the honorees include Christina Applegate, Patti LaBelle, Rita Wilson, Naomi Watts, Martha Stewart and Queen Latifah.

Before Travis and Swift’s California excursion, the couple kept the beach vibes going in the Bahamas in between international legs of her epic Eras Tour. The singer recently released her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department , on April 19.

“They vacationed in the Bahamas for several days," a source told PEOPLE of the couple’s trip at the time. "It was a much-needed break for both of them. They very much enjoyed it. They are so happy together.”

During the QVC event, Donna opened up about her admiration for her son’s girlfriend following the release of the album.

"I listened to the whole album, and I listened to it all morning long when it was released,” she told PEOPLE. "I was just very impressed. She is a very talented woman, and I think it is probably her best work."
