Transportation??

I understand SEPTA has a shortage of drivers, but can’t they put a notification informing potential passengers? Today I waited 30 minutes for the Route 40 bus to Montgomery Avenue that was supposed to come at 12:30. That bus never showed up. The next Route 40 bus came st 12:50, a couple minutes past its scheduled run. I don’t mind the bus being 5 or 8 minutes late, but half an hour is a bit ridiculous. I am hoping there is a notice in advance telling your customers of any delays. I rely on SEPTA as my primary source of transportation because I am unable to drive due to a disability, so I get very frustrated when I am waiting 15 minutes to half an hour on a bus. Please try to allow your passengers to know if there will be a serious delay of more than 5 minutes it would be greatly appreciated.

please feel fix the schedule problems

Lots of good ideas here, and fantastic that real time is really real time pretty much everywhere, but so frustrating that the schedule times when you save things to Favorites are wrong!! BSL times are correct when you search the schedule, but wrong in Favorites (Ellsworth Federal to City Hall times are 3 or 4 minutes off). This makes me doubt the other schedules and doubt the app. The schedule part of the app is clunky and sometimes the searching doesn’t work, so I’m stuck with having saved my favorite routes. You can’t reorganize Favorites. So you have to think about the least important route and do that first and then work up to most important, and redo it if you add a route (because the Favorites tiles are so large that you have to scroll down to see them...I really liked the simple and easy single lines that appeared in the old app). Why doesn’t the map view show my location? It’s really hard to orient yourself when looking at a bus location on a zoomed in map.

Good but needs improvement

This app is good but could use some improvements. The main improvement being mobile ticketing. This would improve using septa significantly: It will allow customers to purchase tickets anywhere at anytime It will reduce lines at ticketing kiosks and booths It will save time for the employees who sell and check tickets in trains as less people will have to purchase tickets in the train Here’s one way this could be implemented: The app would allow customers to buy tickets between two stations. Once a ticket is bought, it would be stored in a “wallet” tab. When the ticket is about to be used, it can be “activated”. An activated ticket can be used, but they will expire after 2 hours. When a ticket is activated, it’ll show up in an “Active Tickets” tab. Clicking on this tab will display the origin and destination of the ticket. It will also show the date, the current time (including seconds) and how much time is left until the ticket expires. The live time and date counter ensures passengers can not get away with screenshotting or screen recording an old ticket. This system is an adaptation of the mobile ticketing system conducted very successfully by NJ Transit for the past few years.

SEPTA Releases Proposed Fiscal Year 2025 Operating & Capital Budgets: Safe, Clean & Secure

Governor Shapiro's Proposed Historic Investment Would Avoid Service Cuts & Fare Increases

PHILADELPHIA (April 16, 2024) – SEPTA is proposing a total budget of $2.6 billion for Fiscal Year 2025 – a $1.74 billion Operating Budget and $922.8 million Capital Budget. For the first time, the Authority’s Operating and Capital Budget Proposals are being presented as an integrated document on a modern web platform , which is ADA compliant to ensure that people with visual or hearing impairments can navigate SEPTA’s budget data.

Governor Shapiro’s proposed $283 million annual statewide operating investment in public transportation, including $161 million for SEPTA, would be Pennsylvania’s largest transit funding increase in more than a decade. SEPTA’s budget assumes the state funding plan passes the General Assembly as proposed, and with a historic increase of $24 million in local match tied to it, SEPTA will avoid devastating service cuts and fare increases that would cripple mobility across southeastern Pennsylvania.

“With the additional funding in place, SEPTA is poised to make historic investments,” said SEPTA CEO and General Manager Leslie S. Richards. “These investments will propel SEPTA forward and help continue to grow ridership, with more than 700,000 daily customers representing 70% of pre-COVID ridership levels – and climbing.”

The $1.74 billion Operating Budget Proposal includes a doubling in funding for safe, clean, and secure initiatives since Fiscal Year 2022 – a total of $72 million that includes funding for 40 more police officers, 30 more safety professionals, and 100 more cleaners. The proposal also features the ongoing expansion of SEPTA Key Advantage , which now has 50 partners and 91,000 participants, as well as SEPTA’s Efficiency and Accountability Program , which has already recognized $50.2 million in annual recurring benefits.

The $922.8 million Capital Budget Proposal is part of an all-time high $14 billion 12-year Capital Program, enabling the largest-ever investments in improved safety, cleanliness, and security – supported by the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA). The proposal includes new full-length fare gates to reduce fare evasion and new cleaning equipment to support the expanded cleaning staff.

By the end of the 12-year program, all Broad Street Line, Market-Frankford Line, and Trolley trips will be through an accessible station – compared to 61% today. SEPTA continues to operate one of the oldest rail fleets in the country, and for the first time, this budget funds at least a partial replacement of each aging fleet. The Broad Street Line, Market-Frankford Line, and Trolley fleet replacements are all fully funded, while the Regional Railcar fleet replacement is partially funded.

These investments are bolstered by historic success in competitive grant programs, including a recent $317 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration to replace the Market-Frankford Line fleet, which is more than three times larger than any competitive grant that SEPTA has ever received. Since November 2021, SEPTA has secured $524.3 million of the $957 million in IIJA discretionary funding awarded to the region.

“Despite higher-than-ever funding levels, SEPTA remains significantly below peer regions in annual transit capital investment,” said Richards. “Southeastern Pennsylvania is leaving money on the table. Additional local funding is needed as a match on the highly competitive federal grant opportunities that are available through the IIJA.”

There will be four public hearings about the Operating Budget:

  • May 20 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • May 21 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

There will be two public hearings about the Capital Budget:

  • May 22 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The hearings will take place in-person at SEPTA Headquarters and virtually via WebEx . The SEPTA Board will consider the proposals at its June meeting. If approved, they will go into effect with the start of Fiscal Year 2025 on July 1.

SEPTA Unveils $2.6 Billion Budget for Fiscal Year 2025, Aiming to Transform Public Transportation in Southeastern Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has proposed a groundbreaking $2.6 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2025, marking a pivotal moment for public transportation in the region. This ambitious financial plan, comprising a $1.74 billion Operating Budget and a $922.8 million Capital Budget, is poised to leverage historic funding opportunities to enhance service quality, safety, and accessibility across its network.

For the first time, SEPTA’s budget proposals are accessible through a modern, ADA-compliant web platform, reflecting the Authority’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity. This move ensures that all community members, including those with visual or hearing impairments, can easily navigate and understand SEPTA’s fiscal plans.

Central to the budget proposal is Governor Shapiro’s unprecedented $283 million statewide operating investment in public transportation, which includes $161 million earmarked for SEPTA. This funding increase, the largest in over a decade, hinges on the approval of the state funding plan by the General Assembly. If realized, it will enable SEPTA to sidestep severe service cuts and fare hikes, thus preserving essential mobility for residents of southeastern Pennsylvania.

The Operating Budget highlights include a significant boost in funding for safety, cleanliness, and security measures, with a total allocation of $72 million. This represents a doubling of resources since Fiscal Year 2022, allowing for the addition of 40 police officers, 30 safety professionals, and 100 cleaners. Moreover, the budget supports the expansion of SEPTA Key Advantage, a program that has rapidly grown to include 50 partners and 91,000 participants, enhancing fare accessibility and efficiency.

The Capital Budget outlines an ambitious $14 billion, 12-year Capital Program, fueled by the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA). This program focuses on unprecedented investments in safety, cleanliness, and security, including the installation of full-length fare gates and advanced cleaning equipment. A notable goal of the capital plan is to ensure that all trips on the Broad Street Line, Market-Frankford Line, and Trolley will be accessible, a significant increase from the current 61% accessibility rate.

Additionally, the budget earmarks funds for the partial or complete replacement of SEPTA’s aging rail fleets, with the Broad Street Line, Market-Frankford Line, and Trolley fleet replacements fully funded, and the Regional Railcar fleet replacement partially funded. These efforts are bolstered by SEPTA’s successful acquisition of competitive grants, including a historic $317 million from the Federal Transit Administration for the Market-Frankford Line fleet.

Despite these advances, SEPTA General Manager Leslie Richards emphasized that the region still trails its peers in annual transit capital investment. Richards highlighted the necessity of additional local funding to maximize federal grant opportunities under the IIJA, underscoring the potential to further transform and sustain public transportation in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Public hearings on the Operating and Capital Budgets are scheduled for late May, offering residents the opportunity to engage with SEPTA’s plans before the Board’s final consideration in June. If approved, these proposals will mark a significant step forward in improving public transportation for the millions who rely on SEPTA’s services, signaling a brighter, more connected future for the region.

Customers can now get information about every stop location throughout the SEPTA bus and trolley system from a new website tool called Stop ID. This is an easy reference for the more than 18,000 stop locations found throughout SEPTA's five county service region.

The Stop ID is a unique number (anywhere from 1 to 5 numbers), assigned to a specific stop location along a route. You can use this number to request schedule information via our SMS Transit Schedule feature. Simply choose the route and direction of travel and the results will show you every stop, and all of the unique Stop ID numbers.

These Stop ID numbers will begin to appear on new bus stop signs in the next several months. In the near future, this system of unique reference points will also be incorporated into new web applications and the Customer Service Call Center telephone system, and will provide an easy location reference for schedule information or to report a concern.
